AN OPEN LETTER TO OUR COMMUNITY

ultivating and maintaining a positive, inclusive, and respectful company culture is imperative to the success of any organization, and Maine Media Collective, the Brand Company, and Art Collector Maine are no exception. I firmly believe that it is the people within our company, their commitment to our mission and vision, and an environment of respect, openness, accountability, and kindness that define a successful corporate culture. As CEO, it is my responsibility to ensure the well-being of our employees and partners in pursuing our collective goals and achieving results. We’ve evolved through many phases as a company: from an eager startup struggling to survive to a period of rapid growth to our current state of thoughtful expansion. When I became CEO in November 2017, I focused my attention on our values and vision. This has included a realignment of our culture, policies, and practices and a strengthening of our brand. I am steadfastly committed to creating a culture that is safe, respectful, and welcoming and that provides an equal opportunity workplace

free from discrimination or harassment in any form. I am proud to say that during this period, we have implemented new policies that cover the full spectrum of what can empower our employees to do their best work in a supportive environment. As a woman, business owner, and leader, I am conscious of ongoing inequalities and biases and the impact of discrimination in our society. Indeed, we hear daily that large and small businesses across America and around the globe are searching for effective solutions to these workplace issues. Moving forward, I will engage in dialogue with other business and community leaders on these important issues. This is a time for all business leaders to intensify our efforts on creating the best environment possible for our employees, partners, customers, and suppliers. You have my promise that I will do so collaboratively and purposefully. I’m proud to have the opportunity to lead a team of 28 smart, creative, and hardworking women and men every day. We offer all our employees fair and equitable compensation, generous benefits, and opportunities for professional and personal growth.

Equally important, we provide them with a workplace where their ideas are heard, they are empowered to make decisions and be proactive, and they can bring issues and concerns directly to me. As we continue to grow and evolve, we will stay true to our mission: to portray Maine positively, bring inspiring content to our readers, and help local companies grow and contribute to our great state. Under my leadership, we will continue to support our Maine Media Collective, Brand Company, and Art Collector Maine partners to achieve success. I hope you will reach out to me directly to join in this important discussion. Thank you very much for your participation, partnership, and ongoing support.

nspiration can come through many avenues in life. Over the years I have heard some amazing stories from artists, designers, and architects about their inspirations for specific designs. Sometimes it comes from something so simple. Bauhaus architect Marcel Breuer, for example, was inspired by the lightness and strength of the handlebars on his bicycle to make furniture from tubular, macaroni-like steel. The result: the Wassily chair that propelled furniture designers all over the world to start experimenting with tubular steel. Other times it’s about comfort. Designer Florence Knoll told fellow designer and architect Eero Saarinen that she wanted a chair that was like a “basket full of pillows, something I can really curl up in.” The result was Saarinen’s Womb chair, one of the most iconic pieces of modern design. The designs of all of the homes featured in our June issue were dictated by the owners’ inspirations. For one family it was a plot of land on Moody Beach (Contemporizing the Vernacular, page 72); for another it was a fireplace (Hearth and Home, page 106). Another owner desired a New England home that would incorporate the architectural styles she admired growing up in New Orleans (Bayou Blend, page 90).

Many residential structures are erected in response to change, whether it is a marriage, the arrival of a child, a need to downsize, or a change in a person's ability. Maine Media Collective, along with Maine Home+Design, is currently navigating through some major changes. In the upcoming months you will notice some new columns on these pages along with new names on our masthead. These changes needed to happen and will make our publication even stronger. Don't worry—we promise to still take you inside some Maine’s most beautiful homes, include smart design, and applaud the craftsmen and designers working in the state we love. With the many distractions in our lives, it can seem almost impossible to find inspiration and not shy away from change. It is my hope that each of you will find your inspiration and embrace the beauty that can come from change.

hortly after I graduated from design school I decided to make the move to Portland. Although I was born in southern Maine, a half-hour away in Buxton, Portland was still somewhat unfamiliar to me. On a crisp fall day I was walking down Market Street when I looked up and saw a series of logos in the window of a historic brick building read: Maine Home+Design, Maine, and Old Port. I did my research, picked up a handful of magazines, and fell in love page by page. This team, right on my doorstep, was creating some of the most beautiful publications I had ever seen! It didn’t happen overnight, but I eventually found myself in an interview with the publisher and the editor-in-chief. That was in late December, and on January 1, I joined my family here at the Maine Media Collective, first as production manager, then as art director for Maine and Old Port magazines. Now, as I write this note, the finishing touches are being put on my first issue of Maine Home+Design as art director. I joined these publications with a strong passion for beautiful design and architecture. What I didn’t know was that I also had an undiscovered love of storytelling. This organization has given me the opportunity to share the stories of Maine and its incredible residents. Over the past

two and a half years this job has sent me to corners of the state I had never seen before. from frozen lakes in Aroostook County to remote islands in Casco Bay. Maine Home+Design has shown me that every house has a story to tell as well. I am blessed to work alongside the most talented writers, photographers, architects, builders, and designers in the state. We collaborate in an environment that fosters independent and creative thinking. Each member’s voice is heard, from the editorial team, contributing photographers, and writers to the homeowners, designers, and contractors in our articles. What binds us together is that we share the passion for good design and storytelling. I feel incredibly honored to sit at this desk alongside loving colleagues. I look forward to watching this team and our products grow and move forward hand in hand with the state we all love.

COMMERCIAL INTERIOR DESIGN corporate • healthcare • hospitality WE LOVE MAINE.

We fill our work days creating Maine-centric media products— publishing magazines and guides, producing radio shows, managing social media sites, developing websites, filming videos, producing events—because of this simple tenet. Our staff have stayed here, come back here, or moved here because we love Maine’s rich history, its unique character, and the people who live here, and most important, because we believe in Maine’s potential. We simultaneously love the Maine we grew up in and fully embrace the reality that things change and evolve. And we bear witness to that happening here. We are cheerleaders for Maine as a place for people to live, stay, and thrive—a place for people from away to move to, a place for second homeowners to buy into, a place to raise children, a place to start and operate a business—as well as a place to visit and explore, a place to escape and heal. And, a place to be inspired. We cover Maine in a positive light. We intentionally leave the negativity and snark to other media outlets. There is a place for everything, and we honor that. But that place is not here.

WORKPLACES THAT PUT PEOPLE FIRST

So if you love Maine, please turn to us with your reading eyes, your listening ears, your follows and your likes, your attendance, and your advertising and sponsorships. ERIK PETERSON received his architectural degree from New York Institute of Technology. After initially working for a small firm for several years, Peterson has been designing houses on the coast of Maine with his team at Peterson Design Group for 25 years. He finds great satisfaction in carefully listening to, and then channeling, editing, and focusing his clients’ wishes to realize their vision of the perfect Maine home. BEAUTIFULLY BUILT IN AMAZING PLACES.

I just finished going page by page through your beautifully presented 2018 Art Issue of Maine Home+Design. Loved the way you provided the insights and interviews with the artists and also the photographs of the lovely houses with the artists’ work situated in place. It was such a joy to spend this rainy afternoon (or any afternoon, for that matter) absorbing the diversity, vivacity, and wonderful color delivered by these talented Mainers. Also, I like stopping in at your gallery periodically—great light and openness for viewing! Thank you!

FUNCTIONAL MINIMALISM

58 MAINEHOMEDESIGN.COM

Joe Seremeth of WoodLab brings an architect’s vision to life without sacrificing functionality or style

“W

ith this one, it’s beautiful. It’s a really nice bathroom. Clearly the approach was minimalist, and you certainly get a sense of serenity here. It’s a very peaceful, beautiful place to relax. The design is from a well-known local architect, Carol Wilson. The whole thing is straight from her drawing. I do a lot of my own design work, but many of the things we build come from architects and designers. A lot of times we get drawings and will flesh out the ideas so they’re functional. Designs often come through to us, and I have to make them work. The architect drew this, and we helped bring it to life. “Although I’m proud of this work, and we’re always very happy to take part in these beautiful projects, this photograph showcases some of the less complicated work we do. In this particular bathroom, there are actually two other very attractive flush teak cabinets. To the left of the sinks is a three-door veneered credenza with continuous grain. “These specific shelves are made of teak, as is the ceiling. They’re seemingly floating with no support, but there are hidden brackets secured to the framing in the wall. That’s how they’re able to support the two sinks. The ceiling is actually built in a panelized shiplap system we created. In order to achieve the seamless look that was desired, every four slats are mounted to a piece of half-inch ply, which acts as a backer and creates a tongue for the next slat panel to lap onto. “The architect was very specific about the coloring of the teak and wanted it to be very uniform. But when you’re talking about a natural material, there is always going to be variation. Different pieces of teak come from different trees. When you get teak in the rough and you open it, it’s every color of the rainbow. It’s green, it’s purple, and it’s orange. At first there was some concern, but experience tells me that you have to wait. When it’s exposed to sunlight over time, that’s when the well-known brown color of teak comes out. It was winter, but I took every chance to bring it out into the sun while we had it.” —Joe Seremeth, owner of WoodLab MH+D

he early spring sky is gray and spitting snow as I pull in to the parking lot of Margo Moore Interiors on Elm Street in Camden. Once inside, I’m immediately warmed and cheered by both the colorful, cozy shop and the friendly greeting from designer Megan van der Kieft, whose parents, Marcy and Peter van der Kieft, founded the business nearly four decades ago. Sensing my curiosity, Megan offers me a tour of the building, once a stately home, which has been added onto over the years. On the first floor, various rooms hold beautifully curated displays of home furnishings and accessories, including pillows, lamps, rugs, bed linens, blankets, glassware, and china. Soft pajamas, socks, and other clothing from Ugg are displayed in a corridor between the main part of the house and a barnlike space with cubbies holding decorative pillows and rug samples from Dash and Albert. I find inspiration for my own home everywhere I look. Upstairs is the design hub, where Megan and Marcy meet with clients. What seem to be thousands of fabric samples are stored everywhere in books, hung on the walls and stacked on shelves and organized by color. On a table, photos and fabric squares offer insight into Megan’s design work. She is in the process of assembling

a binder of ideas for a client on North Haven—suggesting window treatments, custom bed linens, and furniture to complement the rustic interiors of an old Maine cottage. “We don’t have a specific style,” she says. “There’s every walk of life here, and everyone wants something different. People come to us because we know our products.” In 1971 Marcy and Peter opened a women’s clothing boutique named after Marcy’s mother Margo, with whom Marcy had run a similar shop in Darien, Connecticut. The van der Kiefts soon added home accessories to their inventory, and Marcy began helping customers and friends with interior design projects. A decade later, the shop was rebranded Margo Moore Interiors. Megan began helping out at the store when she was eight years old. “I was always underfoot, sweeping, organizing, dusting,” she says. After leaving Maine for college and the early years of her career, she joined the business eight years ago, bringing her status as an allied member of the American Society of Interior Designers to the family operation. Thanks to her education and experience, Megan knows the interior design business from the supply side as well as the creative side. After her freshman year at Lasell College in Newton, Massachusetts, she switched paths and entered Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston, where she

The building was once an elegant home; the first floor is now a retail shop and gallery, and the design studios are on the second floor. Megan’s father, Peter van der Kieft, chose the tree-pattern wallpaper.

studied interior architecture and facility management. Following graduation, she worked on retail store design for Sunglass Hut and Watch Station in Florida before returning to New England and a three-year stint with Home Depot, first as a designer and then as maintenance manager for 69 stores across Connecticut and New York. Tired of traveling and being away from her then-boyfriend, now-husband Frank Carozza, Megan became a private estate manager for a Boston-based family before returning to her native Camden. “I already understood interior design,” Megan says about her decision to pursue a related but different path at Wentworth. “I understood spatial relationships, colors, and textures. What I didn’t understand was how to manage it.” She credits a year off working at the Boston Design Center, work that she continued when she went back to school, for insight into many of the processes involved in her current work. “Having experienced the stress on the other side, hearing a designer say, ‘I thought it was ten weeks?’ It’s actually ten weeks from deposit,

and ten weeks from when we receive your fabric,” she explains. “I think now I understand the components, where it’s shipping from, who’s shipping it, and I can ask the right questions.” As an example, she points out a nearby chair, upholstered in royal blue with white piping. “There are two fabrics on that chair that came from two different vendors, and the chair itself is made by a third vendor,” Megan explains. “There’s such a level of chaos and so many unknowns to get that chair upholstered that way.” The “chaos,” fitting all the pieces of the design puzzle together, is a large part of how Megan embraces her work. “I love it,” she says emphatically. “I love the customers. I love my relationships with my vendors, and I also love the construction people—the people that are making it happen for me, and pushing them to their limits. ‘How do I get that 200-pound chandelier up there? I have absolutely no idea, but you do, and you have the talent, so let’s talk it out.’” She also stresses that, while some of her work involves custom design projects, she will also do

“THERE’S SOMETHING MAGICAL ABOUT THIS STATE, AND EVEN MORE MAGICAL ABOUT THE MIDCOAST.”

consultations on an hourly fee basis—helping homeowners choose colors, for instance, or to figure out placement of furniture in a room. “I enjoy sharing my information,” she says. “I don’t ever want to steer away somebody who says, ‘I want to come in and pay you for your time.’ I could end up finding a $250 pillow that makes their $700 bed look like a $5,000 bed.” While Marcy has been a primary inspiration, Megan credits her curiosity to Peter, a realtor with the Camden offices of Legacy Properties Sotheby’s International Realty who is “secretly involved” at Margo Moore Interiors. “Dad is our backbone here,” Megan says. “He does our window displays. He loves going down on the buying trips with us to New York or Atlanta or going antiquing, or driving my mother to a client’s house and just wandering around. They’re a dynamic duo.”

When Megan and her husband first decided to move to Maine, he expressed interest in joining the business as well. But that would have been too much family, Megan says, so instead Carozza went to nursing school and is now the nurse manager of surgical care and endoscopy at Pen Bay Medical Center in Rockport. Married for 21 years, the couple has three-year-old twins: daughter Frankie, named for her father and grandfather, and son Lucca. “There’s something magical about this state, and even more magical about the midcoast; I would never want my children to grow up anywhere else,” Megan says. “The relationships that are made here—people are so open.” In Maine, in Camden, at home, and at work, Megan is right where she wants to be. “This is my second home,” she says, gesturing around the shop. “Look at these colors. Look at this texture. Look at this beauty. This is inspiration.” MH+D

Just a few of the hundreds of fabric samples (opposite) available to interior design clients. Vignettes such as this one (above, left) are displayed throughout the shop. While Margo Moore Interiors stocks some ready-made bed linens, custom bedding (above, right) is a specialty.

VERNACULAR Modern chic meets cot tage shingle on Moody Beach b y D e b r a S p a r k // P h o t o g r a p h y b y J e f f R o b e r t s

“W

e’re lawyers, so we both always have opinions on things,” says Carmita Alonso of herself and her husband, Ed Estrada. They and their sons, however, were in complete agreement about buying a house on Moody Beach in Wells. They already had a home there, but not one on the beach. When such a property became available, the New York–based family drove north through a blizzard to see it. The house faced the very stretch of sand on which the family liked to take walks, and it had views of the nearby salt marsh. The existing structure had a lot to recommend it—Alonso thought it was “homey and cute”—although a large red-brick fireplace blocked the views, and the knotholes in the upstairs wood floors allowed one to see through to the ground floor. Here opinions diverged. Estrada thought the house needed a renovation. Alonso thought it needed to be knocked down and rebuilt. “I had to let him reach the same conclusion,” she jokes. Once Estrada agreed to rebuild, Jon Moody and the crew of Richard Moody and Sons Construction in Wells and Erik Peterson of Peterson Design Group in Kennebunk and Portland razed the house and replaced it with a shingle-style cottage with decorative flair and a beachy, contemporary interior.

During the school year, Alonso and her family live in a traditional, historic house in Bronxville, New York. When they renovated that year-round home, Alonso did it the “right” way, she says, hiring an interior designer. But for her Maine house, she wanted to collaborate. She gave Moody and Peterson a great deal of freedom but also many inspirational photos. Then she did the interior design herself. “To me, that is the fun part. Why would I pay someone to do what I love to do?” Because of setbacks and other regulations, Peterson designed the house on piers. Many of the houses on Moody Beach are 50 feet by 100 feet, an allotment that can be somewhat boxy, says Peterson. To work against this tendency, he broke up the mass of the house, cantilevering the second floor over the first and using peak gables of different sizes, varied fenestration, and shingle flares between the first and second floor. He also incorporated porches that alternatively press forward (as does a circular front porch with banquette seating) and press back (as does an inset balcony off an oceanside bedroom). Inside, Peterson worked against the box by angling the walls by 10 degrees, a surprising choice that creates visual interest while opening up views and maximizing space. Where you first step into the house, the foyer walls angle outward, as if they are doors swinging open to the sand and

water. You “explode” into the view, as Peterson says, because once inside the house you are looking through the structure at a stunning stretch of sand and ocean. Glass fills the back wall of the first floor’s central space, in the form of an oversized bay window (with daybed), glass doors, and two outsized casement windows. The first floor is chic and modern, with white oak floors that have been whitewashed to suggest driftwood and a white leather sectional couch that faces a natural stone veneer fireplace with a white oak mantel. A sleek kitchen occupies the right side of the room. Dividing kitchen and dining area is an island with a waterfall countertop— that is, a countertop where the surface material spills over one wall of the island until it meets the ground. An additional counter extends the length of the kitchen–dining area wall. Above the countertop, this wall has two translucent window cabinets that frame a glass tile wall with floating shelves displaying dishware. Below the counter, the cabinetry is flat panel with a routed edge (rather than an observable pull), which keeps things looking clean. The natural neutrals of the first floor are accented with the blues and aquas of the dishware; the blue, tan, and white swirls of the thick Cambria quartz countertop; and the light aqua pillows on the daybed. A switchback staircase of white oak with stainless-steel cabling and stainless-steel newels leads up to the second floor, which has a bunkroom, office, guest room, and owners’ bedroom, and then to a third floor with an extra sitting area and an adjacent boys’ bedroom with twin beds and white quilts decorated with small navy anchors. The house reflects its location, and not only by being open to the views. Maine appears in the form of shells in glass jars and sliding barn doors (for the kitchen pantry and powder room) and beach stone tile for the boys’ bathroom floor. But elsewhere the vernacular is embedded in the very design—as with the traditional white V-match paneling (used on the first-floor ceiling and above the fireplace) and the contemporary take on nickel-gap. “Nickel-gap” refers to boards being laid next to each other with a gap wide enough to fit a nickel. In the archway that separates foyer

A countertop also runs along the entire kitchen wall, which has floating shelves, flatpanel cabinetry with no observable pulls, and a glass tile backsplash. Pendant lights made of silver circles of capiz shell or crystal express the “glitzier” side of homeowner Carmita Alonso’s personality, as she puts it.

A view of the living room the daybed is covered with Restoration Hardware fabric, an Italian white leather sectional, a weathered gray drop-leaf table, and a V-match ceiling with white oak ceiling beam. Note the decorative “shadow line that edges the ceiling beam and white oak mantel. It echoes the nickel-gap in the paneling above the stone veneer fireplace. The palette throughout the house is neutral with occasional aqua accents.

In order to maximize places to sleep, architect Erik Peterson and builder Jon Moody of Richard Moody and Sons Construction found creative ways to add storage to the design. In this bunkroom for guests, drawers are incorporated below the lower full beds and within the stairs to the upper twin beds. Each bed has its own charging station, nautically inspired lamp, window, and storage nook. The upper bunks also have steel bars fashioned by Tunnelwerks International. A switchback staircase (opposite) of white oak, stainless-steel cabling, and stainless-steel newels is capped with wood by Tunnelwerks International. The picture is a map of Maine with E.B. White’s words, “I would rather feel bad in Maine than feel good anywhere else.”

from great room, the blocky, angled trim is not traditional, but the gap that Moody and his crew incorporated into the trim is. He used a similar gap as a decorative “shadow line” for the edge of the ceiling moulding, the white oak fireplace mantel, and the white oak first-floor ceiling beams. Upstairs, hints of Maine can be seen in the owners’ bedroom, which has a vaulted ceiling with the open framing that you might see in an uninsulated summer cottage. One particularly fun design project, says Moody, was the bunkroom, which is a nautically outfitted guest bedroom with two full beds below and twin beds above. Each bed has its own window and cubby with reading light and USBport charging station. Tunnelwerks (which is responsible for the steelwork on the staircase) also made fall bars for the upper bunks. Because storage is tight, given the lack of a basement and minimal attic space, the Moody team

fit in extra storage wherever they could. In the bunkroom, the staircase that leads from one bunk level to the next incorporates drawers. Alonso describes herself as a “high/low” designer, finding items for her house at places as varied as Amazon.com, HomeGoods, T.J.Maxx, Restoration Hardware, AllModern, the Kimball Shop and Boutique, Houzz, and Wayfair. She purchased the bulk of her lighting online and sight unseen. That said, she likes to shop local when she can. The Wells house has twill cotton Brahms Mount blankets, which Alonso purchased from L.L.Bean, and lobster rope mats that she found at Cape Porpoise Trading Company. Against the generally restrained aesthetic, she has a few more eyecatching pieces, such as some sparkly kitchen pendant lamps that include round and oval pendants made of capiz shell circles rimmed in silver, and a striking oversized orb

The front entrance’s walls flare outward at a 10-degree angle then join an archway with blocky modern trim that references the vernacular by using the gap that you might see in more traditional nickel-gap paneling. A sliding barn door leads to the powder room and laundry room. The floor has been whitewashed to suggest driftwood.

made of turquoise beads strung on copper wires, which hangs in the owners’ bedroom. “I need a little of my own flashy personality,” she jokes of these choices. “I have to have a little glamour in this.” Another surprise is the abundant use of mirrors as decoration. A giant porthole mirror hangs in the bunkroom. An oversized mirror composed of several circular mirrors faces another mirror in the secondfloor hallway. Mirrors face each other in the third-floor sitting room, and a mirror hangs to the right of the refrigerator. Even the frame of Alonso and Estrada’s upholstered bed’s headboard is a mirror. “You will notice they make a room look bigger or reflect the outdoors,” Alonso says. She first saw mirrors used as decoration in India, where she traveled for her work as an immigration lawyer. Even before she decorated her Wells home—and then once she had finished furnishing—she thought, “It’s such a cool thing to do, especially when you have a beautiful view outside.” Though she picked up the design trick in India, Alonso finds herself using mirrors here for one more pleasure: the way they reflect the Maine light, which fills the house, drawing people outside even as it illuminates a beautiful reason for staying inside. BAYOU BLEND New England meets New Orleans in a contemporary farmhouse in Falmouth

by REBECCA FALZANO Photography JONATHAN REECE

This Falmouth home was designed by Kevin Browne Architecture to marry each of the homeowner’s regional roots: his in New England and hers in New Orleans. Steep roof pitches, a covered porch, tall ceilings, and oversized doors and windows are a nod to the architecture of New Orleans, while the farmhouse aesthetic is in keeping with the New England vernacular.

W

hen it comes to a love for Maine, Luke Halliger* had a head start over his wife, Jill*—but not by much. Luke grew up on the midcoast and spent summers on North Haven. Jill is from New Orleans originally, but came to know Maine through summer sleepaway camp in Freedom and during family vacations on the coast. The two met at college in Vermont and, after a decade in San Francisco, decided to move to the place they shared a fondness for. “We were drawn back to Maine by its authenticity, its beauty, and all that it has to offer a growing family,” says Jill. Easing themselves out of city life, they landed first in Portland, in a 100-year-old home, then bought a densely wooded and promising piece of land in Falmouth where they could start from scratch and create a home for them and their two young boys. Falmouth architects Kevin Browne and Chris Herlihy of Kevin Browne Architecture, along with KC Construction and Jarrod Bernier Fine Carpentry, got to work creating a family-friendly home that spoke to the distinct aesthetic of both owners. Jill was drawn to the architecture of her childhood in New Orleans: tall ceilings, oversized doors and windows, and generous mouldings. Luke leaned more contemporary and preferred the farmhouse aesthetic so prevalent in New England. The architects’ challenge was to design a house that would marry Jill’s southern roots with the local vernacular. On the exterior, this meant a covered porch and roof pitches that are steeper than usual. “We felt

that Kevin did a great job interpreting our vision for the exterior of the house,” says Jill. “He nailed the directional look and feel with his very first sketch. He really focused on the exterior symmetry, and it executed very well.” On the interior, ten-foot-high ceilings give the rooms a generous feel. One of the strongest nods to New Orleans was made in the window design. Browne and Herlihy’s design called for oversized windows with tall casements and transoms above them that reach within six inches of the high ceilings. “The vertically proportioned grille pattern is reminiscent of a New Orleans home,” says Browne. To balance out some of the more formal elements, the architects kept the inside trim clean, more typical of that found in a farmhouse. Slightly less traditional floors are wide, rustic white oak finished with Rubio Monocoat, a matte, vegetable-based stain, in a greige tone. Like many modern-day families, the Halligers desired an open floor plan, with one strong exception: they had to have a formal dining room. “An actual dining room was important—we use it for family dinner every night,” says Jill. Having a kitchen at the center of the action was also a top priority. Jill loves to cook but didn’t want to be closed off from the kids or conversations with guests, so a generously sized open kitchen with a multiuse island and high-powered stove and hood was important, as was a walk-in pantry. The kitchen receives ample daylight, so the team at Kitchen Cove Cabinetry and Design kept the kitchen design light and bright. They chose to limit upper cabinetry to maximize windows that were designed to come right down to the countertops,

eliminating the need for much backsplash. A large island with drawers for storage makes up for the lack of wall cabinetry, and the beaded inset cabinetry features relatively minimalist doors in a light shade called Stone Bluff, which complements the oak floors. “Since they have a busy family, we stayed away from true white cabinets and chose a taupe color instead,” says kitchen designer Mary Adams. “This helped to create a softer, less formal family space.” The honed Bianco Dolomiti white marble countertops help set off the subtle color of the cabinetry, and the island was designed to offer ample seating. “It needed to accommodate a minimum of four seats, and having seating that is not all in a row is much more welcoming,” says Adams. One of the couple’s favorite elements is the oversized zinc range hood, which was handmade in Portland by Rusted Puffin Metal Works. Since the kitchen is open to the living area, a paneled refrigerator was specified to blend in with the other cabinetry. The opposite end of the kitchen opens up to the dining room, which includes a hutch area and wet bar. Designing for a family with two young children included creating living spaces with large openings between them so everyone can feel connected even when in different areas, as well as creating distinct areas for play. A den on the first floor is where the TV lives and is a cozy place for the family to congregate. A daylight basement (made possible by the site’s natural drop in grade from front to back) offers a

playroom where Legos can be strewn, as well as an exercise area. Upstairs, the owners’ bedroom is situated along the rear of the house with a view of the backyard. The two (equally sized, of course) boys’ bedrooms in either gable are connected via a narrow, five-foot-wide Jack-and-Jill bathroom with a trough sink that follows the shape of the room. An in-law suite above the three-bay garage was added during construction and connects to the main part of the house. While the visual aesthetic was carefully considered, so too were the parts of the house not outwardly visible. Energy-efficient measures include exterior sheathing with rigid insulation that adds extra R-value to the walls. In addition, two- by six-inch walls with dense-pack cellulose create a more airtight system than fiberglass insulation, and an R60 ceiling was made possible by the truss roof. Outdoor spaces were also designed to fit the young family’s needs. Landscape architect Soren deNiord (who was brought on after the house was sited) created complementary outdoor areas, which include a dining spot, a kitchen garden, and a play space. “It was a difficult property with a lot of topography, so a lot of thought was put into creative grading solutions to gracefully transition the front and back of house,” says deNiord. The team made a formal gesture in the front with an ellipse-shaped lawn to define a front-of-house experience and create a gathering space.

The owners' bath features large-format Carrara marble tile on the floor and walls and small-format herringbone tile on the shower floor.

Today, a typical day for the family centers on the kitchen. The boys spend a lot of time sitting at the island, where they draw, do homework, and eat breakfast. Time together spills over into the living room and den, and in the summer, the doors that lead from the kitchen to the patio are almost always open so the family can move in and out for meals or to work in the garden. The house represents the best of both worlds for Jill and Luke—a place that honors both of their pasts and will carry their love of Maine well into the future. HEARTH AND

HOME A TRADITIONAL CUMBERLAND HOME GETS A SMART UPDATE THAT REFLECTS THE OWNERS’ NIGHTLY HABITS AND NAUTICAL STYLE BY KATY KELLEHER // PHOTOGRAPHY BY JEFF ROBERTS

Nan and Sam Scott love to light fires. Every evening, after Sam gets home from the hospital (he’s a surgeon, and Nan is a retired nurse), they settle down in front of the fireplace. Snowy winter Saturdays are often spent watching the flames dance, and even on cool summer evenings, they’ll gather some tinder and build a modest fire. Nan will make tea, and Sam will pull out his guitar and begin to strum. This is their routine: good books, hot liquids, and the sound of wood popping and crackling in the background. So, when it came time to renovate their Cumberland home, the Scotts started at the most logical point: the fireplace. When they bought the farmhouse-style shelter in 2000 it had a large center chimney with one hearth in the kitchen, one in the living room, and one in the owners’ suite. After years of living happily in this fireplace-rich space, they decided they wanted to change the flow of their living areas and update the decor. Both Nicola Manganello, owner of Nicola’s Home in Yarmouth, and Tanner Maguire, owner of Maguire Construction in Yarmouth, were brought in to give the house its makeover. “When we met to go over drawings, they made it clear that a new fireplace was their focal point,” says Manganello. “That was priority number one.” Nan and Sam wanted to restructure the interior of their home to create an open floor plan (rather than a series of small, closed off rooms) with a single large, central fireplace on the first floor that they would be able to see from the kitchen and the entryway. “Nan wanted the fireplace to look like it had been there for years,” Manganello says. “So we renovated the house around it.”

Nan and Sam Scott worked with Nicola Manganello of Nicola’s Home in Yarmouth and Tanner Maguire of Maguire Construction in Yarmouth to update their classic New England home. In the summer, roses climb up the trellises and hydrangeas bloom out front.

MAINEHOMEDESIGN.COM 107

“What we started with was a very traditional colonial house with a center chimney, and the clients wanted to convert it to an open concept,” explains Maguire. “So many of the house’s views had been hindered by that big center chimney.” Manganello drew an updated floor plan that removed one of the fireplaces, knocked down the dining walls, and introduced a new chimney in the living area. She also designed a reading nook, which necessitated moving the exterior walls slightly to create a micro-addition. While it may have looked out of place on another home, the bump-out it fit right in with the New England farmhouse aesthetic. “On old colonials and Capes, you’ll see a variety of features that have been added on over the years,” Maguire says. “It felt right.” Aside from the bump-out, the house’s exterior remained largely the same, while the interior underwent a dramatic transformation. Yet the flow of the space feels organic: Manganello and Maguire seamlessly integrated old features (like the herringbone-pattern brick floors in the foyer) and new (like the wide oak planks in the living room). The fireplace, which is made from New England granite, features a heavy stone mantel and wide-spaced mortar. “Those giant stones give it the attention it deserves,” says Maguire. “It gives weight and presence to the room.” Manganello even took the couple to a quarry to help them pick out individual stones. She explains they decided on granite “because you get this nice, mossy patina.

108 MAINEHOMEDESIGN.COM

The living room was created to highlight the fireplace (above). When the Scotts first purchased the house, the first floor was made up of a series of small rooms. During the renovation, they opened up the dining room, living room, and kitchen, and painted the ceiling, which creates a feeling of lightness throughout. “The painted ceiling adds a subtle but pretty touch that changes throughout the day,” Nan says. Manganello added robin’s egg blue grass cloth to the stairwell (opposite). “Blue is my favorite color,” Nan explains. “It shimmers, and it looks a bit like the ocean.” They kept the herringbone brick floors from the original structure.

A sliding barn door leads into the den (opposite), where Nan and Sam watch television. The indigo pillows help add a masculine touch to Sam’s space. “Before the renovation, that was our dining room, and we never really used it because it was too formal,” says Nan. “We flipped the floor plan so the dining room would be closer to the kitchen.” View of stairwell (this page).

While they didn’t come to us with a lot of criteria, it was important to them that it feel like something we uncovered or unearthed.” Inside the fireplace, Maguire’s team installed herringbone brick, which creates a sense of continuity with the original flooring. “They paid attention to every element of the space,” says Manganello of the Scotts. “He’s a surgeon and he’s very detail oriented, and she knows what she likes to look at. We were working with homeowners who really care, and that shows in the final product.” While both the Scotts wanted the space to feel warm and cozy, there was some slight divergence in their personal styles. Nan is a self-described “shabby-chic romantic,” and Sam prefers a more masculine, nautical look. Natural materials like wood, stone, and copper provided a good compromise for the longtime couple. Shiplap walls pair with wood and stone ceilings to create a living area that feels classic yet welcoming. Nan and Sam also gave each other free rein in certain spaces. The powder room is very Nan, with a pine cabinet (finished to look like mahogany), floral grasscloth walls, and clusters of decorative mirrors, while the den is designed to speak to Sam’s hobbies (“He’s a sailor first and a surgeon second,” jokes Nan), featuring large mahogany doors on a barn track, woven shades to add texture, and indigo throw pillows. “One of the things I loved about working with Nicola is that, while she does beautiful work and has her own look, she understood that I have my own color palette,” says Nan. “I’m drawn to blues and beiges—the colors of driftwood and the ocean—and I like a little pop of pink.” With this in mind, Manganello set about choosing textiles that would lend a light and calming feel to the space without skewing overly girlish. At ABC Rugs in New York City, she found an antique rug that has an appealing color pairing of turquoise and cream. Since it was a “big-ticket item,” in Manganello’s words, they decided to “commit to the rug and build the living room from there.” The result is a space dominated by pastels and neutrals, with a few jewel tones thrown in as grounding elements, like burgundy pillows and wine red throws. Since Nan is drawn to antiques, Manganello helped recreate some old-fashioned looks using modern products, like the pine cabinet that sits near the sofa. MAINEHOMEDESIGN.COM 113

The glass on the cabinet looks as though it’s etched, but the frosted look and vine detail comes courtesy of a very large pair of stickers. “We got them from a company in London, and when we put them on, we spent some time running our credit cards over the decal to get all the air bubbles out,” Manganello remembers. “That was a new process for us.” While the elegant cabinet is a clever bit of design deception, the stairway needed no such alterations. The main staircase is a swirling, graceful structure that was original to the house. “That stairwell is probably what sold me on the house,” Nan says. “When we first saw it, everything was wallpapered, and it wasn’t my style. But the bones of the house

were so nice, and I saw this round, mahogany, ballroom stairwell and I loved it.” Maguire stripped the stairs down to the bare wood and refinished them, giving the railing a new, soft sheen. “The house was outdated, but it was well preserved,” he says. Although he recognizes that new construction is a “cleaner, easier process,” he enjoyed working on the Scotts’ house. “Renovations like this give you the opportunity to be creative with the space, and in the end, you have this cool, quirky space you wouldn’t have thought to design into a new build.” The project wrapped up in 2015, and Nan and Sam have since settled into their old-but-new living space. It’s been a few years since they underwent

The guest room (above) features Farrow and Ball paint on the walls and distressed white-painted furniture. (Nan likes the “shabby chic” look.) Manganello helped the couple figure out how to best meld their styles. Although a lot of new features were added, Nan has had these linen slipcovers (opposite) in her dining room for over 18 years. “They’re just so easy,” she enthuses. They also happen to go with the blue and green color palette.

the restoration process, but the thrill of living in a thoughtfully designed house built around their habits and hobbies hasn’t worn off. “When we first moved back in after the renovation was done, we would sit on the window seat and look at each other,” Nan recalls. “I’d say to Sam, ‘I wonder who lives in this wonderful house, and will they be coming back soon?’” For Nan, the house remains a source of continual gratitude. “It’s the most peaceful place,” she says. “I love to sit here, reading, watching the fire, and watching the snow come down.” MH+D For more information, see Resources on page 142.

(Clockwise from top left) Manganello found this pine cabinet and finished it with a medium varnish and stickers to create an antique-inspired, etched-glass look. The upstairs guest bathroom features a blue dresser that Manganello converted into a vanity. The downstairs powder room features a cluster of antique mirrors and a mahogany vanity. (Opposite) “Our home is warm, but it’s simple,” says Nan. “We want it to feel welcoming, and loved. Nicola did an amazing job helping us achieve that. She has so much talent and vision.”

“I

take lots of photographs. I take photographs of landscapes and objects in those landscapes, close-ups and distant vistas. I file them in folders and visit them for ideas and inspiration. Learning to pay attention and appreciate the details and nuances of the natural world is possibly the most important thing I have learned as an artist. It is also never-ending. “I have been thinking about the universal qualities of landscapes—those common

characteristics that make one feel like they ‘know’ the place and that it speaks to them of something deep and complex, something familiar and yet mysterious. I am interested in the lines and shapes that repeat in nature and cause an intense personal response, sometimes conscious, sometimes not, but that when painted evoke a strong emotional connection with the viewer.”

FIT TO BE TIED Inside Marlinespike Chandlery in Stonington, you’ll find custommade bell ropes and beckets surrounded by a stock of vintage buoys, wooden beads, rusted fishhooks, and other charming nautical relics

L

ike many girls before me, I discovered the quiet pleasure of tying knots just months before the noisy rush of junior high began. I remember those summer days of friendship knots and macramé as one of the last truly quiet times in my life; for hours, there was just the steady rhythm of fingers manipulating thread, the slow growth of intricate pattern. A similar quiet descends as I examine the bell ropes and beckets at Marlinespike Chandlery in Stonington. These beautiful items are the work of chandlery owner Timothy Whitten, a fiber artist who creates woven straps, handles, and jewelry. The idea for a store, he explains, came after he had started selling these old-fashioned pieces of labor-intensive nautical art online. Whitten first began making bell ropes and beckets while he was working his way through graduate school. “I found myself rereading Moby-Dick and a few other related novels, and I wanted to build myself the quintessential wood chest, complete with handles on the end,” he remembers. As he began the process of building his chest, he became fascinated by the handles (called beckets). He began weaving and braiding natural twine, creating heavy, sandy-colored works of art. He calls them “samplers,” like embroidery samplers, because each piece allowed him to integrate a number of different braiding methods. The work, he discovered, suited him nicely. In 2008 Whitten moved up to Maine and decided to open a store. Initially, Marlinespike Chandlery functioned as a gallery space for his art, but it was difficult to fill even a small space entirely with his labor-intensive fiber art. Soon, he started sourcing “related maritime artifacts and objects of interest,” he explains. “The theme of the shop is that it’s all stuff that grabs my attention. Assembled in the way that it is, the collection has resonated with people who find their way to my store.”

Whitten also makes jewelry, like this netted beachstone necklace (a bestselling item). 5. This fishing trawl tub was once used in groundline fishing for haddock or cod and is now filed with an assortment floats and rope. (Whitten notes that “with a glass top this makes an interesting table.”)

Unlike chandleries of the past, which sold primarily functional objects to seafaring types and their families, Whitten’s store is defined by aesthetic interest and curiosity value rather than everyday need. One doesn’t need a brass bell outfitted with a custom bell rope, nor does one require a hank of antique cord or a paint-chipped buoy. But these things are lovely in their faded, weathered way. “I think the whole space is inspirational for me,” Whitten says. “I collect nautical paraphernalia, like strings of cork floats or nets—all that maritime detritus.” He’s particularly drawn to Lignum vitae a type of rot-resistant wood. “It’s generally regarded as the densest wood in the world,” Whitten explains. “It’s favored for pulley parts and rigging implements because it’s so durable. It’s one of those magical materials—you hold it in your hand and you feel the density, the tightness of grain, and the polish it achieves. It’s very satisfying.” Whitten’s reflective appreciation of antique wood is representative of his entire shop: the reason Marlinespike Chandlery works is because it’s a space where objects have history, purpose, meaning, and weight (both symbolic and literal). While he identified early on that much of his audience would be the “traditional maritime crowd,” Whitten has been pleased to discover his pieces also resonate with those who love art and with homeowners who want to surround themselves with fine, unique things. “I wasn’t fully aware of the customer base that Stonington and Deer Isle attract—there are a lot of artistic influences up here, and as I realized that, I began to look at my own work in a new way,” Whitten says. “It’s been an eye-opener for me.” MH+D

CURATE YOUR OWN MARITIME MUSEUM AT HOME uOne of the easiest ways to create a

sense of cohesion is through collecting multiples of the same item, Whitten reveals. “Whether it’s a string of cork floats or a group of old fishhooks, I’ve discovered that I tend to display and assemble things in multiples,” he says. When displayed together, inglorious items like iron pulleys begin to take on new meaning. Scour flea markets for antique fishhooks, string them together, and hang them near an entryway for a unique piece of wall art. “I like the simplicity of basic shapes,” he adds.

uWhen hanging items, consider your

wall color. “I have both dark colored walls and lighter ones in my shop,” says Whitten. “Light objects naturally pop on a dark wall, and darker pieces of rope look best against the white walls.” (Marlinespike is painted red, white, and blue. “That’s the color palette that appeals to me most,” Whitten says. “Traditional.”) Whitten suggests taking five or six lengths of old rope and hanging it against a rustic wall.

uDon’t throw out your lobster shells,

and continue pocketing river rocks. “I like to make a short cairn from large, round beach stones,” Whitten says. “I also have a stack of graduating sizes of scallop shells, and another of clam shells.” Whitten even collects old lobster claws that he’s saved from dinner. “I clean them with a toothbrush and soap and water,” he reveals. “Then I cut the bottom so they stand upright.” Together, they create a textural display that would look fantastic next to a stack of old books or under a framed cluster of maps.

n conjunction with the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship’s 25th anniversary exhibition, its annual New Work by Faculty show will be taking place throughout the summer. The exhibition will feature the work of woodworkers, designers, and artists who teach at the center. Located in Rockport, the nonprofit school offers furniture-making and woodworking classes year-round. The show will feature work from instructors from the United Kingdom and Australia as well as from Camden and Rockland and many places in between. All the artists are considered international leaders in the fields of furniture making and design, wood turning, marquetry, carving, and fine art. “As we celebrate the center’s 25th year, the summer faculty show highlights the ongoing vitality of design and

craftsmanship in wood,” says the center’s director, Peter Korn. “A new generation of makers has clearly found its voice and easily shares the floor with internationally renowned woodworkers who have been the backbone of our faculty for decades.” The varied pieces include musical instruments, tables, boxes, bowls, and an elegant long-handled spoon, each of which was crafted from multiple types of wood. According to Korn, the show “is a testament to what can be achieved when impeccable technical skills are applied to sustained aesthetic exploration.” The Center for Furniture Craftsmanship’s New Work by Faculty show will be on display at the center’s Messler Gallery in Rockport from June 15 to September 12. A PEAKS ISL AND TREASURE... HO

PEAKS ISL AND, MAINE

Arguably, this home is in one of the best spots on the Island. Sitting 50’ from the rocky shore with a Cat Bird’s Seat to watch all the ocean has to offer – from the moon and sun rising over its’ horizon to crashing surf to the islands that dot its’ surface – it’s a spectacular spot. The home, in good condition, offers 3 bedrooms, 2 baths, a great covered porch and could be lived in year-round. It’s the last of two houses on a no exit dirt lane with conservation lands beyond so privacy, peace and quiet is the tone of the day – every day. $729,000.00

his project will, without a doubt, be a landmark on one of Maine’s best-kept-secret lakes. On a small island setting, out on a peninsula, this home is designed by Joe Delaney of Whipple | Callender Architects. It will take shape with the help of local builder Joshua Gregoire, and crew foreman James Hamper of Bartow Construction. With 1,000 feet of lake frontage, the home sets to three shorelines and has visibility of Thompson Lake throughout. Large windows span across the lakeside of the home to bring views of the outside in, and the attached garage gives easy access throughout the year. With six bedrooms and five-and-a-half bathrooms it gives the family space to gather and enjoy the property yearround. Another interesting feature of the property are the massive boulders

along the water line from glacial remains brings history to the site. To complement this and create an outdoor-indoor relationship, the lake room will feature a large stone fireplace, built by Heath Custom Stone Works. The structural integrity of the home has been designed by Casco Bay Engineering and will encompass a variety of steel, laminated lumber, and kiln dried lumber to achieve long window spans and an open first floor concept. Hancock Lumber is providing materials for the project. Teresa Pereira of Richardson and Associates is working to design the exterior, which includes an outdoor kitchen, terrace, and many other landscaping details. Tammy Gamache of Gamache Landscaping will be making the exterior design a reality. MH+D
