Think Positive The power of positive thinking is well documented. It's known to reduce stress, improve confidence, relationships and resilience and has countless health benefits - they say it's good for your blood pressure, heart, immunity, depression, pain relief and recovery from ailments. In short, positive thinking helps you live a longer, happier life. I don't know why I'm a positive thinker, but I definitely am. Is the glass half full or half empty? Half full, of course! What's the point in focussing on the empty bit (especially if it has wine in it). If I had to list 3 attributes about myself that I like, positivity would definitely be one of them. Have a go ... be nice to yourself and name 3 things (not physical) that you like about yourself. Hopefully there will be a lot more than 3, but if positivity is on your list, then high five. We are kindred spirits. Positive thinkers can still have a moan and a grumble and see all the faults in the world and the people around us. Believe me, I have a keen eye for weaknesses of my nearest and dearest ... and my own. I mean, I could probably write an equally long list of things I don't like about myself (especially if we include physical attributes) but I choose not to dwell on them. The good things are so much more important. I think that's the key, to keep the bad stuff in perspective and rejoice in the good stuff. A dear friend of mine who works in mental health once articulated this happy condition I suffer from. She said that whilst many people suffer from "intrusive negative thoughts" I benefit from the opposite ... I get endless intrusive positive thoughts. We fell about laughing when she "diagnosed" me, and I still giggle every time I think about it. On numerous occasions since we have had to break off mid conversation for a little chuckle, when I come out with one of my ridiculously positive thoughts. I don't know who to thank for this cheerful disposition, but guess

what? I'm really happy about it! Maybe it goes back to this moment (I'm sure everyone has a memory similar to this) ... I think I was a teenager or perhaps early twenties, and I had got myself into trouble again - I don't remember the specific incident, nothing massive, I just remember the feeling. I had tried to cover my tracks and probably told a trail of white lies. I was petrified of getting found out, mainly because the web of deceit was worse than the original crime. The anxiety was intense. And then it just hit me. If I always do the right thing, I'll never have to feel like this again. Even if I do the wrong thing, I can quickly recover by doing the right thing next (like owning up). Or if doing what I consider to be the right thing means breaking a rule, then so be it. I can do so with a clean conscience and integrity. If you know yourself, and know that your motivation is always good, then you have nothing to be afraid of. This releases you to be your true self, a person who is much more likely to achieve happiness and success. Wow, I sound like a proper guru! So whilst I'm on a roll, let's practice some intrusive positive thoughts. Smile and imagine a little pink glow in your heart, full of childlike innocence and goodness. When you next take a walk, look for something lovely that you haven't noticed before ... bulbs pushing their little shoots up, birds tweeting, a gentle breeze. When you hear something annoying or negative (a failed test perhaps) think of the positives (an opportunity to learn and do better next time). Someone is moaning about someone else. See the other side and stand up for them. You feel fat? You have other priorities right now (being a good mum, friend or working hard) - you can deal with that when the time is right. Take control of the thoughts in your head. They are yours alone and you are their master. But if you ask me ... you're amazing.

Life's Little Bugs Tina Stubbs, the award winning author and illustrator behind the ‘Life’s Little Bugs’, set out with a goal to develop a series of picture books that will engage young readers with good habits in a positive, fun way. Tina wanted the Life’s Little Bugs collection to be engaging by its rhyming style and colourful illustrations, as well as a solid reference for teaching young children about health and well being. Throughout the process of creating Life’s Little Bugs, Tina also sought advice from professionals in health, hygiene and social behaviour to ensure accuracy of information in her stories. As such, each book comes with its own set of rules to follow that support the development of these little life lessons, from hand-washing to treating others with respect. Through her interest in learning methods, Tina has come to understand the importance of repetition in helping children learn. As a result of her research, she has designed rewards charts and extra activities alongside the Life’s Little Bugs book collection that consolidate the positive messages discussed in the stories. There are also a set of workshops for primary schools and story telling sessions for preschool children to support the current SMSC education in schools.

Watch Out they can cause good habits in young children! For more information visit www.lifeslittlebugs.co.uk Sign up for the free app and be the first to find out what’s new https://apps.lifeslittlebugs.co.uk

Forgotten Food In the era of supermarkets, ready meals and worldwide food imports, this month we look at some of the more unusual British dishes that were once common but have now disappeared from our everyday tables. There is no doubt that although many of our staples have remained, the dishes we eat daily have changed drastically over the centuries. Who would now enjoy a bowl of garum? Yet this fermented fish soup was a favourite of the Romans. We tend to think of the medieval era as being typified by banquets overflowing with roast meat and washed down with endless tankards of mead. In fact, there were many cookery books kept at this time and dishes were often surprisingly complex, served with a great deal of visual wit. Take for example the cockentryce. A capon, or castrated cockerel, was boiled, cut in half and sewn to the rump of a piglet. This was then stuffed and spit-roasted before being ‘gilded’ using egg yolk, saffron and (edible) gold leaf! In those days if you were offered custarde, you wouldn’t have poured it over your apple pie. Custarde was a type of 15th century quiche made with eggs, veal and prunes. Medieval foodies loved to combine fruit with their meat in dishes like fish sausage, made from a mixture of fish, currants, cloves, mace and salt. Puddings were equally creative with wonderfully poetic names such as ‘a dish of snow’ - a concoction of whipped egg whites and apple purée, and ‘eggs in moonlight’ - eggs poached in rose water and sugar to resemble moons. Some dishes would probably not be considered palatable today. For example, in the 1700s, cows’ udder would be eaten either roasted or boiled with spices and served cold, and Richard Bradley’s The

The Berkshire Break

Country Housewife and Lady’s Director in the Management of a House and the Delights and Profits of a Farm (1736) contains a recipe for boiled vipers. In rural areas, both badger and hedgehog were considered a delicacy. Bradley’s cookery book has instructions on how to prepare badger by cutting off its ‘gammons’ (hind legs), stripping them and then soaking them in brine for a week to ten days, after which they should be boiled for four or five hours and finally roasted. The hedgehog was a Romany favourite and would have been widely eaten in mid-Bedfordshire where there was once a thriving Romany gypsy population. The hedgehog would be caught, packed in clay and baked on the open fire. Once the clay had hardened it was broken away, which took the skin and spines with it, to uncover a meat said to look and taste like roast pork (hence the ‘hog’ perhaps). Beestings (or beastings) pudding was another rural dish. A milk pudding, it was made at home from the rich colostrum of a cow that had recently given birth. The Victorians were adept at using every part of a slaughtered animal for food, from the brains to the hooves. Calves’ ears would be shaved, boiled and fried; offal used to make various patés; and calves’ feet boiled to extract the natural gelatine. We could probably learn a lot from the Victorians in managing our food wastage today. Perhaps future generations will look back on our love of Super Noodles and tinned baked beans with both horror and amusement.

February Health How to Get a Good Night's Sleep

3. Stop smoking and eliminate or reduce evening alcohol and caffeine. Both nicotine and alcohol can affect the quality and length of our sleep and caffeine is a stimulant. All three can also contribute to GORD and LPR, two of our ‘sleep enemies’. 4. Look after your body and your body clock. Our bodies are designed for, and need, exercise and daylight during the day and a more relaxed, dim environment in the evening. The hormones that regulate our body clock are responsive to these conditions. Try to make your environment as peaceful as possible during the evening, and… 5. Avoid blue light within two hours of bedtime. Blue light, more than any other type, interferes with production of the sleep-inducing hormone melatonin. That means no TV, no tablets, no computers and no Smartphones. While blue light filters on these devices help, most reduce the blue light rather than eliminate it entirely. 6. Declutter your brain. Try talking your worries through regularly with a sympathetic friend or family member, or write them down before bed - if you can write a possible positive action beside your worries, even better. If your mind is full of to-do lists, write them down too; knowing you don’t have to try to hold those ‘must-dos’ in your head should help you relax. 7. Have a night-time routine. When bed time is just an hour or two away, choose relaxing activities like reading (titles that get your adrenaline pumping are best avoided). Try having a warm (not hot) bath and/or a massage, using relaxing aromatherapy oils. 8. Make your bedroom a haven. Try to avoid using your bedroom as a work space or dumping ground; being surrounded by work to be done or clutter to be cleared isn’t relaxing. Ensure your bedroom is well ventilated and not too hot or cold and keep the lighting low, using lamps and a blackout blind or lined curtains. Earplugs are useful if you have noisy housemates or neighbours. Try to invest in a comfortable, supportive mattress and pillows. Adjustable beds can help if a fully horizontal sleeping position isn’t right for you, and orthopaedic pillows or memory foam pillows will ensure your head and neck are well supported. 9. Try not to worry about it. Lying there worrying about not sleeping isn’t helpful. If it’s just not happening, try to do something relaxing, such as reading a magazine or doing a jigsaw, until you feel sleepy. 10. Finally, see your doctor. If hormonal problems, night time toilet trips, mental health issues, GORD, LPR or pain are the problem, or these tips don’t work, visit your GP. They may be able to find an underlying cause you’re unaware of, and can recommend treatments and lifestyle changes to help.

Last month we looked at why sleep is so incredibly important for us, and the health risks associated with lack of sleep. This month we have some practical tips to help that elusive prize, a good night's sleep. But first, a quick recap ... research has shown that insufficient or poor-quality sleep can contribute to serious health problems, including: • Weight gain and obesity. • Weakened immunity. • Increased risk of diabetes, cancer, Alzheimer’s Disease, heart disease, heart attack and stroke (over 45s who sleep less than six hours a night are 200% more likely to have a heart attack or stroke). • Reduced fertility and libido. • Reduced memory, concentration and reaction times. • Increased risk of depression, anxiety, paranoia, hallucinations and psychotic episodes. This means it’s vital that we all get enough good quality sleep, which for most of us means at least seven hours. However, it’s not always that easy.

The Enemies of Sleep • Burning the candle at both ends, trying to fit in work, domestic or family duties and that TV programme we don’t want to miss. • Sleep disorders: night terrors, sleep walking, sleep talking, sleep paralysis, teeth grinding, restless limb syndrome and sleep apnoea. • Needing the toilet. • Pain e.g. from arthritis. • An uncomfortable or unsuitable bed, mattress or pillow. • Hormonal changes: temperature control and production of melatonin (a ‘body clock’ hormone) are affected by hormonal changes during the menstrual cycle, and pain or heavy bleeding can disrupt sleep too. • Stress or depression. • Snoring. • Too much blue light. • Smoking and alcohol. • GORD (Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease) or LPR (laryngopharyngeal or ‘silent’ reflux, in which stomach acid damages the airways rather than, or as well as, the oesophagus, causing asthma-like symptoms).

Ten Tips to Help You Sleep 1. Stop snoring. Maintaining a healthy weight can help to prevent snoring. You can try sleeping on your side, nasal strips, sprays or mandibular adjustment devices, but if these don’t work, consult your doctor. Not all snoring is harmless; you may be spending part of each night receiving a reduced oxygen supply, which can have serious health consequences. 2. Don’t go to bed hungry - but don’t eat late. Try to leave at least two hours between your last meal or snack and your bedtime. If you feel hungry in the evenings, choose something light and easily digestible. Milk can make you feel full and contains tryptophan, which can help sleep - but it’s absorbed poorly (eating a carbohydrate-rich snack at the same time may help). The Berkshire Break

Fabulous Fireplaces It’s time to put another log on the fire, get cosy and snuggle up until winter is over. These ideas will help ensure your fireplace looks as good as it makes you feel.

Every ‘real’ fire needs a tool set. In wrought iron with an antiqued finish, this trio of poker, fork and grabbers will help you get the flames going on a chilly evening. Fireside tool set, £44.50, Garden Trading. If a rustic log basket isn’t your look, consider a minimal metal holder instead. Lodge round log carrier in steel, £57, Garden Trading.

Improve You Fireside Decor • The fireplace wall is often the focal point of the room, and can look amazing when treated as a feature wall, using either striking wallpaper or a paint colour that contrasts with, yet also complements, the colours used in the rest of the room. • Fireplace accessories can be quite distinctive and are usually on display, so choose pieces, whether contemporary or traditional, that co-ordinate both with your room as a whole and with each other. • Above the fireplace, add either a work of art or a mirror that is proportionate to the space. A mirror is very useful for reflecting light around the room, but don’t feel it has to be a traditional overmantel – something more contemporary may fit better with your style. • Think about what is displayed on your mantelpiece. Photographs, candles, small ornaments and vases of flowers, collections ... anything goes provided it fits. A formal, symmetrical arrangement is easy to achieve and suits a traditional room, or else something more freeform can be eye-catching and intriguing. • Not using your fireplace? It can still be a great feature. Stack logs within it, prop up a framed picture, display a large ornament such as a shell, a piece of coral or antlers, set up a group of candles, or simply use the space for a display of flowers in a simple vase.

Film Reviews Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri (2018) Martin McDonagh has managed to pull off something incredibly special with “Three Billboards”. The film balances a seemingly innumerable number of themes, tones, ideas and messages whilst also being concise, simple and thoughtful. 2018 has begun well ... More than any other film I have seen in recent times, “Three Billboards” is burningly and shockingly relevant. Almost every conceivable social issue present in modern day America is portrayed and discussed at length. What is incredible here is that none of it feels forced, unnecessary or “preachy” as these social issues are what the entire narrative is built upon. Everything that happens in the film feels as though it has a purpose and a role to play. The film is also visually stunning. Set in the beautiful heart of America, the scenery of the film is as gorgeous as the cinematography, contrasting the darkly humorous tone the film oozes. When it's not making you laugh, it's making you cry, when it’s not making you cry, it's making you shocked and afraid. However what the film does is constantly make you aware and disgusted at the way in which government neglect touches and damage the lives of all races, genders, classes and abilities. This is surely “Three Billboards” true purpose. I know it's early days, but if another film in 2018 impresses me as much as “Thee Billboards”, I will be utterly astonished; the bar has already been set VERY high this year. 10/10 In cinemas now.

The Incredibles (2004) With a sequel due for release this summer, now would be a good time to look back at one of the most beloved kids films of the 00s, Pixar’s groundbreaking “The Incredibles”. Not only did “The Incredibles” continue to prove that computer animation was still the best way to create engaging children’s films, it also was the first superhero film in the last few decades to achieve critical and financial success, arguably re-popularising the genre that now dominates cinema in the modern era. Although the film now looks visually dated due to the significant advances in CGI over the last decade, the charm and humour of Disney’s classic has most definitely not been lost. As with many cleverly made children’s films, behind the fun and adventure, “The Incredibles” hides some genuinely intelligent and thoughtful themes and messages. The film highlights the importance of family, and the significance of embracing other people’s differences. “The Incredibles” is genuinely inspiring in its portrayal of people who have fantastic talents, who learn to be unafraid of using them in a world that mocks and suppresses individuality. This is an important message that the film beautifully presents to all children that watch. If “The Incredibles 2” is half as good as its predecessor, it will be worth a watch. In 2004 Disney created a charming, thoughtful and most importantly, entertaining movie kids and adults adore to this day, despite its ageing visuals. 8/10 Available on Blu-ray and DVD. Bill Robinson

Perfect Pancakes Whip up a classic pancake batter to celebrate Shrove Tuesday. Try one of our extra special sweet or savoury serving ideas, or stick with the original and best, fresh lemon juice and sugar ... delicious!

Sweet Choc ‘n’ nuts – spread warmed pancakes with chocolate and hazelnut spread then fold into quarters. Drizzle with warmed chocolate sauce and serve with toasted hazelnuts. Orange cream – heat 4tbsp thin-shred marmalade with 150ml orange juice in a frying pan and simmer for a few minutes until syrupy. Fold the pancakes and add to the pan, turning to coat in the syrup. Serve topped with whipped cream or crème fraiche. Savoury Cheese and bacon melts – add 2tsp dried Italian herbs to the pancake batter. Fill each cooked pancake with some grated Cheddar and 2 rashers crisply fried smoked bacon rashers. Fold over and pop in a hot oven for 10 minutes until the cheese has melted. Tuna parcels – place a spoonful of canned flaked tuna fish in the centre of each cooked pancake and top with some canned sweetcorn and chopped spring onion. Fold the pancakes to make parcels and enclose the filling. Serve with sweet chilli sauce.

Ingredients: • 100g plain flour • Pinch of salt • 1 large egg Makes 8 pancakes 1. Sift the flour into a large bowl, add the salt and make a well in the centre. Add the egg and beat with a balloon whisk, gradually drawing in some of the flour. 2. Slowly pour in the milk, whisking all the time and drawing in the rest of the flour, until you have a smooth batter which is about the consistency of single cream. 3. Stand the batter for about 30 minutes to allow the starch grains in the flour to soften and expand –this will give a lighter pancake. If the batter has thickened slightly then just whisk in a splash of milk. 4. Heat a little sunflower oil or a knob of butter in a non-stick shallow frying pan (about 20cm diameter) until almost smoking then quickly ladle in enough of the batter to thinly cover the base of the pan, swirling the pan to give an even layer. 5. Cook for 1-2 minutes until small air bubbles appear in the pancake then flip it over and cook for a further minute until golden. Repeat with the rest of the mixture, serving the pancakes as they are cooked or interleaving with baking paper and keeping warm in a low oven.

Green Fingers Time to Get Pruning

you are removing is joined. A cut like this will heal over much more quickly and the wound will be smaller and less prone to fungal rotting.

By Pippa Greenwood

• Before you get carried away, check the best pruning time for the plants you have in mind. Most hedges and many shrubs can be cut back now, but if you are after a good display of flowers make sure that you prune at the correct time or else you may end up pruning out the plant’s potential.

At this time of year the weather is often perfect for pruning and cutting back woody plants, and there’s a good chance that there are many pruning jobs that have built up over the last year and could benefit from your attention now - so take advantage of the fact that deciduous trees, shrubs, hedges and climbers are now devoid of leaves and get stuck in. Here’s how to make sure your pruning will really benefit your plants:

• Some trees mainly those in the Prunus family such as cherries, plums, apricots, damsons, peaches and nectarines - are very prone to a potentially fatal fungal infection known as ‘silver leaf’. This is less likely to cause problems if these trees are pruned in the summer months, so don’t prune them now unless there is no alternative and you are sure you are prepared to take the risk.

• If you have a relatively small expanse of hedge or are looking to roughly reshape a shrub, a good, sharp pair of shears should do the job. Make sure they are well-oiled so that the blades move smoothly and then angle the blades to make a level trimmed surface. When you are cutting along the top of a hedge you may want to use a guide line so that you make a neat and level surface - a taut string will do. For large hedges consider using a powered hedge cutter or hedge trimmer, but make sure you are happy with the weight of the machine and can use it safely!

• Always make sure that pruning tools are really sharp. If they are in the slightest bit blunt then the job will not only take a lot more effort from you, but may also end up with the plant being damaged, as the cut made will be jagged or stems may be crushed.

• When the pruning of shrubs and trees includes the removal of stems at various heights and of varying thicknesses, it is worth using some ‘loppers’. These are available in various handle lengths, while some even have telescopic handles so that you can reach up higher without having to use a ladder or platform. They are much better at cutting through relatively thick stems than shears or secateurs and yet also allow for accurate positioning of the cut. If you are having to cut back branches above your head it is worth wearing some protective headgear, as well as goggles to protect your eyes from falling debris.

• Create sloping cuts whenever you can so that rain and moisture runs off and does not accumulate (wetness encourages wood rotting), and cut close to but not on top of a bud as this will allow new growth without dieback. When you are using shears or large-scale trimmers you cannot do this, so always use secateurs, loppers or a saw.

• Everybody with even just a single shrub in their garden needs a pair of secateurs and the better the quality, the better the job you can do. Secateurs can be used for the most precise pruning of smaller woody stems. Provided they are good and sharp, you can make a perfectly clean and accurate cut. Always cut to an outward-facing bud (so that the new growth produced from that bud grows outwards). Secateurs are good for removing dead and dying stems as well as for formative pruning (where you are helping to ensure the plant grows in the direction you want it to), and for pruning to encourage flowering. If you are pruning out dead and dying material, bin it or burn it in case it carries infection.

• Stand back from time to time when you are pruning and see what the overall appearance of the plant is like, and just where you are best off removing the next bit - if you are close up it is harder to see how your pruning Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood.com and you’ll find some great gardening things: ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ (where you receive your chosen garden-ready vegetable plants in the spring accompanied by weekly advice and tips from Pippa) plus Nemaslug, bio-controls, gardening tools, raised bed kits, Grower Frames, signed books and more!

• When it comes to pruning out or tidying up larger branches on trees and shrubs then a proper pruning saw is what you need. If you choose one with one or (better still) two lines of teeth you can produce a very accurate and clean cut with relatively little effort. If you have fruit trees to prune then this is the perfect tool for the job. Use a sawing action for best results and again, if cutting above your head, wear protective headgear and goggles to protect your eyes. Make the pruning cut a few millimetres from the main stem to which the branch The Berkshire Break

Technology Love from the likes of Spotify or Apple Music at home, in the garden or on the beach when Summer finally returns. We’re big fans of the Bose Soundlink Mini (£169), but you needn’t spend that much to get great sound: Sony’s SRS-X2 is around £60, while JBL’s Flip 2 is about £50 and TDK’s tough Trek Flex is £55 - £69 depending on your choice of colours. If you’d rather give a more traditional gift, technology can still help: the Lastminute. com, Laterooms.com, Expedia.co.uk, Kayak and SkyScanner apps can all help you find the perfect romantic getaway at the right price, while the 5pm and OpenTable apps make it easy to book a restaurant for a romantic night out. If you’d rather impress by cooking something spectacular at home, celebrity chef apps from the likes of Jamie Oliver and Nigella Lawson can give you not just recipes but videos on how to prepare the perfect Valentine dinner. Tech can even help if you don’t currently have someone to share Valentine’s day with: online matchmaking services such as Match. com have smartphone and tablet apps to help you find Miss or Mr Right, while famous apps such as Tinder (for everyone) and Grindr (for gay or bisexual men) use location awareness to help you find potential partners near you. If that sounds a little bit scary, apps such as Hitch enable friends to play matchmaker, limiting the pool of potential suitors to people your friends already know.

It’s easy to get Valentine’s Day wrong: nothing says “I love you” less than uncomfortable pants in the wrong size, some wilting flowers or whatever chocolates were half price in Tesco. But if your soul mate is a gadget fan, it’s very easy to get Valentine’s Day right. One of the considerations when buying presents for your tech lover is that they tend to have the big things already, so for example if they fancied an Apple Watch or a Samsung Galaxy S6 they’ve almost certainly bought it for themselves. But that’s an opportunity rather than a problem, because there are stacks of accessories and add-ons that can enhance what they’ve already got. Take the Apple Watch, for example. There’s a huge range of straps including tanned and coloured leather, metal and fun coloured silicone that can completely transform its looks. Apple’s own ones are fairly nice and predictably expensive, but you don’t need to pay quite so much: metal straps from the likes of Hoco (£48) and leather ones from Nomad (around £70) look and feel fantastic, and having multiple straps means the Watch fits with any outfit from ultra-casual to seriously formal. It’s a similar story with smartphone and tablet cases, where there are some fantastic designs to choose from. A woven Ted Baker case for the iPad Mini is £35, while Pipetto.co.uk’s clever Origami cases are around £30. You’ll find all kinds of household names making phone and tablet cases including Radley, Michael Kors and Aspinal of London, with prices ranging from around £12.50 for a simple Radley iPhone case to £250 for an Aspinal iPad case. Accessories aren’t just about fashion. If your beloved has a smartphone, tablet or laptop they might appreciate some Bluetooth accessories, such as Bluetooth wireless headphones - around £50 for a set of Jabra Move headphones, rising to around £200 for high-end sets from Bose - or wireless speakers, which are great for streaming music

Making STEM Fun STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) are the fastest growing industries in the world. Even if your child doesn’t fancy a career in STEM, they will need to use elements of it throughout their working life. According to The National Science Foundation, “To succeed in this new information-based and highly technological society, students need to develop their capabilities in STEM to levels much beyond what was considered acceptable in the past.” So how can you help your child to enjoy STEM? Science There are lots of children’s science sets available to buy, but you don’t actually need any fancy equipment to conduct simple experiments at home, such as: • Asking your child to add a few drops of oil to a glass of water. Discuss what they think will happen. Will the oil and water mix or stay separate? • Finding four old, dull two pence coins. Soak each one in a different liquid (water, coke, vinegar and lemon juice) for a few minutes to see which liquid cleans the coin the best. Technology Computer programming now features in the National Curriculum and many schools offer basic coding clubs from Key Stage 2. Paul Lyons, IT Director at Ebuyer.com, explains, “Even if your child has no interest in becoming a software developer, they will benefit from skills such as problem solving and following instructions - which can be applied to other areas. Many parents may not know where to begin, but introducing educational aspects into children’s technology use at home can have a real impact on a child’s ability.” There are lots of resources available to help your child at home. Useful websites include: • scratch.mit.edu, which lets children aged six and up learn the basics of creating games online.

• codecombat.com: while this American site is mainly aimed at teachers, you can sign up as a parent or student to a free short course. • www.codeclub.org.uk, which lists coding clubs for 9-13 year olds across the UK. Engineering K’Nex model building sets are a fun way to introduce engineering concepts. The K’Nex Education Introduction to Simple Machines: Levers and Pulleys Set, for example, contains more than 170 pieces, and instructions for building eight mini machines. You can also help your child to make simple structures using household items. Straws and play dough are ideal materials for building model bridges. Or try searching www.instructables.com for instructions on making structures out of lolly sticks or toothpicks. Maths Kjartan Poskitt, author of Murderous Maths and Ambassador for the National Young Mathematicians’ Awards 2017, says, “I always say that maths is like broccoli. You either like it or you hate it, but you have to have some because it’s good for you. If learning the tables is driving your child mad, what can you do to sauce them up? The secret is to play around with numbers and get to know them. Here are a couple of little facts and tricks to get you started: • If you write out the digits 1 2 3 4, you can turn them into 12 = 3 x 4. You can also do this with 5 6 7 8 because 56 = 7 x 8. • Pick any three consecutive numbers (e.g. 4, 5 and 6). Multiply the smallest by the biggest, and then add one. (So here we get 4 x 6 = 24, then 24 + 1 = 25). The answer is always the same as the middle number squared (5 x 5 = 25).”
