Accidental Addiction Last month, we booked a late deal and popped to Egypt. Our summer holiday always creeps into September but this year it crept slightly too far and I accidentally returned one child to school a day late. Eeek! Red faces all round ... well, tanned ones anyway. Massive parenting fail. Anyway, turns out, 2 weeks in Egypt is cheaper than 2 weeks in the UK and as the heatwave had broken by the time we went, we opted for guaranteed cloudless sunshine in a faraway place. Very nice it was too. However, the start of my holiday was plagued by headaches. Really quite annoying and intense - the sort of pain that makes your head throb when you bend over and never really goes away; like sinusitis but without a cold. Hmm, new reading glasses and lots of reading? Maybe. Dehydration? I was drinking plenty of water. Stress? Er, no. I left all that behind. Thankfully after 4 or 5 days they wore off also confirming that it was probably none of the above. And then in dawned on me. No Diet Coke. The soft drinks were less than brilliant - I don't drink "full fat" Coke and they never seemed to have the skinny version, hence loads of water. So I hadn't touched a drop of my favourite daily tipple and I'd inadvertently gone cold turkey! I don't even drink a lot of the stuff but I do have one a day, and even that was enough to send my body into withdrawal. I remember in the dim and distant past when I did a detox diet - the same thing. It's quite an eye-opener. I've always been very flippant about my daily Diet Coke and joked that I was addicted, but I actually was. Having now done a tiny bit of research on the subject, I'm relieved to discover that I'm barely the tip of the iceberg - there are people out there (probably mostly in America) who really behave like drug addicts - hiding their usage, stockpiling, craving a fix first thing in the morning or even in the middle of the night. I could go a day without one and probably not

notice. But I'd attribute the headache to something else. So what should I do now, now that I'm back home where DC is freely available? Do I revert to my daily habit, a treat that I really look forward to every lunchtime? After all, everyone has a vice and it could be a lot worse. Or do I now actually take note of the endless other negatives widely reported about it, albeit it, many of them somewhat tenuous and pseudo scientific? Even it's addictive properties can't fully be explained - with levels of caffeine very low in the quantities I was consuming, and aspartame addiction debatable. There are cans in the cupboard and there was a 500ml bottle in the fridge. Was. I had it over 2 days ... and I didn't really enjoy it. So, maybe I've cracked it. I've bought plenty of fizzy water (regular readers will know that I do like bubbles) and in my swishy new kitchen I can have chilled filtered water from the fridge. I can share the kids squash and elderflower cordial. And I drink lots of tea (don't deny me that pleasure). AND I now have a rather wonderful drinks cabinet that is filled with the most enticing array of colourful bottles and divine liquids (glossing over the potential repercussions if I swap my lunchtime DC for any of those). No, I am a new, reformed moderate version of my former self. If I fancy a DC, I shall have one. But I shall have a mental limit of 2 per week, and at the moment, I don't even fancy that. Anything that gives you colossal headaches when you stop using it is NOT good for you. So the "good intentions" of last month have sort of accidentally happened to me, ... I could argue that I'm not just spouting nonsense every month, but occasionally sound advice. Oh, and I also said last month that I'd be getting a dog. Well, that was a slight exaggeration. She's a Cockapoo puppy and we collect her at the weekend. I am beside myself ...

OCTOBER 2018 FEBRUARY 2016

Four things to consider if you’re thinking about downsizing 4.

In 2017, leading retirement housebuilder, McCarthy & Stone, reported of a downsizing exodus with 5.7 million UK pensioners looking to move to smaller properties – 300,000 more than the previous year. This growth equated to an expected release of £80,000 of equity on average, equalling £450 billion while it is projected to more than double to £877 billion by 2036.

In addition, if you’re adapting to a smaller living space, you are forced to audit your belongings and thoroughly consider what really matters to you and what can be thrown away or donated to charity. There’s nothing quite like a good clear-out to ring in new beginnings.

Values high enough to make any homeowner in their later life dizzy, these findings clearly demonstrate the growing attraction of downsizing to a smaller property. Nevertheless, the decision to downsize is often not an easy one to make. Emotional attachments, memories and even the sheer amount of stuff which has accumulated over the years are often cited as three major turn-offs.

If you’re thinking about downsizing and would like to talk about mortgage options for you, pop into your local branch or contact us to arrange an appointment with one of our qualified mortgage advisers.

Does this sound familiar?

Wokingham branch: 19 Broad Street, Wokingham, RG40 1AU, Call: 0118 9785945 Visit: wokingham@newbury.co.uk

If the answer is yes, keep on reading as below, we have outlined four reasons why downsizing and ditching the family home could be the right decision for you: 1.

To help fund retirement Releasing cash is a powerful motivation, but many retired homeowners find that their cash is tied up in a variety of assets which cannot easily be accessed, for example, they own their home but live off a small income such as their pension. Downsizing is an effective way to release funds and supplement a pension during retirement for other expenses such as the opportunity to travel abroad or to purchase the classic car you’ve always wanted. A smaller home doesn’t mean a decrease in lifestyle; in fact it can actually enhance it.

2.

To gift funds for a loved one’s first house deposit (Bank of Grandma and Grandad) The Bank of Mum and Dad is increasingly relied upon by first-time buyers to boost them up the property ladder. However, grandparents are helping out financial too but find that much of their wealth is tied up in their own property. By downsizing, you can gift a proportion of the sale to a loved one for a house deposit. You may even be able to pay off your own mortgage at the same time.

3.

Reduce monthly outgoings A smaller property ultimately means smaller outgoings on things commonly expensive to run. Electric, gas and water in monetary values will be far less in a smaller property then a big family home with plenty of rooms which aren’t being used anymore. Your carbon footprint will be a lot cleaner and the environment will thank you for it too!

To live a simpler life As well as the many financial perks of downsizing, there is also a range of other benefits to moving to a smaller property. By having fewer rooms to maintain takes the pressure off if you’re struggling with upkeep.

YOUR MORTGAGE IS SECURED ON YOUR HOME. THINK CAREFULLY BEFORE SECURING OTHER DEBTS AGAINST YOUR HOME. YOUR HOME MAY BE REPOSSESSED IF YOU DO NOT KEEP UP REPLAYMENTS ON YOUR MORTGAGE.

There will be experts providing valuations on the following types of collectables: Coins (including British & World, sovereigns, Krugerrands, Royal Mint commemoratives & proof sets), stamps, banknotes, medals & militaria, antiques, clocks, watches, jewellery, gold, silver, pre-1900 documents/books & maps, cigarette-cards, postcards, pre-1960 sporting programmes & tickets, pens, vintage toys, vintage comics, scientific instruments, swords, bayonets, deactivated and antique firearms. OCTOBER 2018

October Health Achieving a Better Work-Life Balance

will all suffer. You’re also putting yourself at great risk of mental and physical health issues. • Prioritise tasks and break them down into smaller steps so that you stay on track, avoid being overwhelmed and have a feeling of achievement.

by Alison Runham 1st – 5th October is National Work Life Week, an event run by the Working Families charity and focusing on how employees and employers can improve work-life balance. The charity wants to create a society in which everyone can fully meet their work and caring responsibilities and has “real choice in balancing the interdependent demands of family, work and community at different life stages.” However, this vision seems a long way from being realised. In research undertaken by Working Families, half of parents said their work-life balance was a source of stress and one in ten said they were ready to resign without another job to go to. It also revealed that seven out of ten parents worked at home in the evenings and at weekends, due to increasing workloads, lack of time for planning, organisational culture, and manager attitudes. But working long hours is bad for our health. Research published in 2015 by Public Health expert Prof Mika Kivimäki showed that people working 55 hours or more per week have a 33% higher risk of stroke and a 13% higher risk of coronary heart disease than those who work a 35 to 40-hour week. While his study didn’t look at the potential reasons behind this link, experts have suggested that these increased risks are probably due to prolonged sitting, stress, less time for exercise and less time for relaxation and healthy eating. Working long hours can mean not enough time looking after your health and wellbeing. So, what can employees do to achieve a better work-life balance, and what can employers do to help their staff achieve it?

Employers: Listen to Your Employees Some employers panic when employees ask for more flexibility, changes to working times, reduced hours or to work from home, but there’s no need to. It could be a positive change. To become a more flexible employer: • Investigate how technology could help your employees work from home or while travelling for work. Cloud-based apps and services can allow workers to access real-time financial data, message colleagues and collaborate on projects online. • If an employee requests a change to their working practice, listen to what they want with an open mind, but also express any concerns you have so that they have the chance to address them. Offer a trial period so that both of you can see how this new way of working performs in practice before making any commitment. • Consider job-share options for both existing and new roles. You should also consider the well-being of your employees and ensure you’re meeting your legal obligations to them. • Do your employees get the breaks they’re entitled to in a place away from their workstation – and your queries? • Do you signpost or offer mental and physical health services, such as counselling or lunchtime exercise activities? • Do you ensure that the equipment they use is positioned correctly to avoid physical strain and fatigue? • Are employees encouraged to speak up if they feel the demands placed on them are too great? • Do you encourage working smart, not working long? Research shows that happier, healthier employees are more productive and likely to stick around and that millennials are increasingly looking for more flexible employers, so practising flexibility and caring about employee wellbeing is not just altruistic – it makes good business sense as well.

Employees: Think Flexibility The Working Families study showed that half of people in the UK want to work flexibly but currently, fewer than one in ten jobs advertised offer flexible working (even though it may be available in the role). Flexible working can become particularly important if you’re a parent or carer, but before you go looking for more flexible employment, be brave: approach your current employer. Discuss your requirements and possible solutions, such as more flexible working, changing work times, reducing your hours or working fully or partially from home. You could also consider self-employment but be warned: this comes with its own downsides and doesn’t suit everyone. Finding and retaining work, selling your skills, doing your own bookkeeping and admin, taking sole responsibility for the quality and completion of projects and having nobody else to motivate you can be overwhelming and stressful – not to mention lonely. If you work by yourself from home, you also need to think about where you will work and how you will avoid distractions, including family and friends. Some are inclined to see working from home as not quite real work, failing to appreciate that you still have deadlines to meet. • Whether you’re employed or self-employed, know when to say no and when to down tools. • Leave work behind when your hours are finished and don’t be tempted to open those work-related emails. • Get enough sleep. Working into the night is ultimately counter-productive as your memory, response time and concentration The Berkshire Break

Misery (1990) OR ANOTHER LIFE-THREATENING DISEASE Misery is a master class in terror, despair & SUFFERING FINANCIAL OR OTHER HARDSHIP? and a slow descent into insanity. It reflects closely on writer Stephen King’s personal Wokingham District Cancer Trust experiences thus making it not only a fantastic suspense film, but a may detailed case study into be able to help the dangers of obsessive fandom and the responsibility of artists. For more information Misery tells the story of fictional fiction writer Paul Sheldon’s rescue andvisit: recovery www.wdcct.org from a car crash that turns into indefinite imprisonment at the hands of the or super call fan that saved him. Set in an isolated American settlement, Misery has 0118 949 5030 very few characters making it all the more important that the ones included are fleshed out to the maximum. Thankfully this is the case and none are more interesting that Kathy Bates’ character Annie Wilkes. Her delivery is terrifying and from the onset she instils real fear in the audience and the characters. Her performance is boosted by the fearsome cinematography and lighting that subtly elevates the performances to uncomfortably unsettling levels. hour that the film says about its per things Typically from More impressive still£11.00 are the writer, Stephen King, skilfully uses Bates’ character to discuss the Book Now!! responsibility that writers such as King have over their fans. The film expresses the dangers of obsessing over an artist’s work, explaining how it can lead to a refusal to accept change and an inability to forgive www.domestique.co.uk/wokingham mistakes. This is delivered subtly, without appearing overbearing which is vital when delivering an effective message. Free Oven Clean worth £48.00 Misery is not only suspenseful but clever as well. It satisfies traditional horror fans with well crafted suspense and terror whilst also managing to present an intelligent message and an interesting insight to its writer’s thoughts. 9/10 Available on Blu-ray, DVD and Netflix. Mission Impossible: Fallout (2018) Tom Cruise and Paramount Pictures have somehow done it again; ATORIES &once WINDOWS LTDMission Impossible franchise has produced an exciting, more the original and entertaining action movie through strong writing and a purist attitude to filmmaking. As is so common in his relentless career, Tom Cruise takes centre stage as super spy Ethan Hunt who once again finds himself in life threatening situations trying to prevent the collapse of society as we know it. Sounds like more of the same, but to my surprise it wasn’t. The fast paced action is intact, but the story and stunts are unique. Many times whilst watching I tried to think of solutions to the challenges within the story, or ways for the heroes to escape perilous situations and I was often surprised at the clever solutions. On more than one occasion I was left genuinely shocked at the twist, something commonly missing in modern day action. The problem with many mindless blockbuster films nowadays is their infinite predictability. Henry Cavill partners Cruise as his morally unpredictable companion but I find his performance to be one of the films downfalls. Cavill’s notoriously emotionless delivery makes an appearance in Fallout and although his physical stature makes him intimidating, his dry performance, especially next to Cruise, removes a lot of his threat. Fallout also maintains Mission Impossible’s long tradition of real, non CGI stunts. This dedication to pure filmmaking and a relentless pursuit of the perfect shot carries over through the whole film, elevating the Henry Street Garden Centre, experience far above the usual Hollywood mediocrity. Arborfield, Berkshire, RG2delivers 9JY Yet again the Mission Impossible franchise a 01189 762080 remarkably refreshing, fun and twisty spy story that would be d.co.ukexcellent, or calleven intowithout one of showrooms Tomour Cruises consistently superb acting. 8/10 if you missed it in cinemas ... throughout the summer? A conservatory is a Greenhouse in all but name. They both have an aluminium frame with either a polycarbonate or glass roof and surrounds. BOTH are highly efficient at trapping heat in summer (the greenhouse effect). This makes it an ideal habitat for growing plants but it is not generally good for human comfort. The reverse is true for the winter months, where polycarbonate and glass have poor insulation qualities thus providing a minimal thermal barrier to trap the heat in the conservatory, making it a chilly place to be avoided. The ideal solution would be to have a strong, lightweight and insulated roof panel which would cut out the greenhouse effect in summer, and trap the heat in winter. Our insulated roof panels are:  Cooler in summer  Warmer in winter  Quieter in bad weather  Reduces glare  Competitively priced

Sheeplands currently houses a “National Collection” of the plants, which is approved as such by the National Council for the Conservation of Plants and Gardens. Sheeplands owner Rob Scott explained “I already have visitors coming from as far away as Brighton and London to see the plants we have here and Agaves from my collection were shown at the Chelsea Flower Show this year. “Now I intend to create a centre that will attract enthusiasts from all over the country, and even from abroad on occasions. That's because they will be able to see such a wide range of succulent plants in a single location. We have enough space and the intention is to display plants that will be real showstoppers. “People can’t see such a comprehensive range of succulents at places like Kew and Wisley because they have to stock a much wider range of different species.” Being recognised as a National Collection means that a centre has to preserve, document and propagate plants and make them available for the public to view. Mr. Scott explained “succulents are becoming much more popular because they are so easy to care for and are also architecturally impressive. Younger people are happy that they are tolerant of some neglect and the elderly also find them easy to care for. They are becoming a feature in more and more residential properties and interest in the plants is increasingly rapidly".

It was a joy to do, especially as his brilliantly well written dialogue makes the actor's job so much easier. Bearing that in mind, when I was looking for a comedy for the Autumn slot, I naturally looked at Ray Cooney first. Standing in Reading library I found myself laughing out loud at the script for 'It Runs in the Family,' and I was hooked. Set in a Doctor's common room in a large hospital sometime in the 1980s it is a delicious blend of mistaken identity, bluff and double bluff and all that makes British farce great. It is an exciting blend of wit and challenging physical comedy. Not only is the play funny but the incredibly complex knots in which the participants tie themselves are beautifully realised and are both a The Berkshire Break

You’ll need to: • Be at least 21. • Have the right to live in the UK permanently. • Have a spare bedroom. • Have enough time to look after a child. You don’t need to be in a relationship or own your own home. You don’t need any qualifications, but previous experience with children is beneficial. What types of fostering are there? There are lots of different types of foster care. Some children only need a short-term placement. Others need a long-term home. You could even just offer emergency, overnight, weekend or respite care if you prefer. You could also choose to foster a young parent and their child. Both would live with you and you’d help the parent to develop their skills until they were able to care for the child independently. What kind of children need fostering? Children from all backgrounds, and of all abilities and ages, find themselves in foster care. Many end up returning to their birth families or going on to be adopted. Some children have complex emotional or physical needs. Sometimes, foster carers specialise in a particular age group, whether it’s babies and toddlers, primary school children or teenagers. Some people focus on caring for disabled children or children seeking asylum. Your case worker will talk to you about what type of placement would be best for you. How much could I earn? At Wokingham Borough Council, foster carers are now exempt

from council tax as part of a range of benefits and incentives. This new additional financial assistance is being offered to thank and support their amazing foster carers. The minimum weekly allowance per foster child starts from £162. Older children have greater allowances, as do children with special needs. So, for example, if you fostered a nine year old and a 15 year old, you’d receive at least £408 for each week you looked after them. That money would need to cover the child’s food, clothes, toys and other expenses. Foster carers at the council are also paid a fee starting at £140 per week for each child placed in addition to the allowance. An experienced foster carer at Level 2 who cares for 2 children all year could earn over £25,000 p.a. Additional amounts are paid for summer activities, Birthday and Christmas costs and an annual bonus of up to two weeks fee. What support would I get? You’d be offered excellent training including a specialist therapeutic programme and receive one to one and out of hours support. You’d be invited to join the Wokingham fostering family at many varied local support group sessions and family activities such as BBQs and pantomime trips. How do I apply? The application and assessment process is easier than you might think and usually takes less than six months. Call Jackie on 0118 974 6204, email fostering@wokingham.gov.uk or come along and meet a foster carer at one of our drop in fostering information events. Visit: www.fostering.wokingham.gov.uk for more details.

Empty nest? The perfect time to foster Few things are as rewarding as fostering. If you’re ready for a new start then you could make a big difference to a local child. Call us on 0118 974 6204 or visit www.fostering.wokingham.gov.uk for more information about fostering with us.

Green Fingers Beautiful Bulbs By Pippa Greenwood Ornaments on your windowsills and shelves are pretty enough, but why not make your house all the more special this winter with some bowls of bulbs that are really brimful of colour, perhaps with gorgeous perfume too? You can buy ready-planted bowls of bulbs later in the year, but act now and you could soon have a stunning display at a fraction of the price. The best bulbs are those described as "prepared", which basically means they have been put through a carefully planned sequence of conditions to ensure that they flower well, reliably and uniformly indoors. Prepared bulbs are often a bit pricier but are still great value. You can also use standard bulbs but the results may be unpredictable. I like to use some prepared hyacinths, but just cannot help creating more bowls of non-prepared bulbs too. Visit your local garden centre now and you should see a good array of bulbs for sale, plus all the other things you need. Special bulb bowls are a good buy, and are available in just about every colour imaginable. They’re rather like huge soup bowls, but in plastic or china. Unlike standard pots they have no drainage holes, which is better for your furniture! You can use normal flower pots, but do make sure you put a fully waterproof container or saucer beneath each pot – or watering will prove messy later on. You can use standard multi-purpose compost for indoor bulb displays, but better still buy yourself some bulb fibre or special compost formulated for indoor bulb planting. It’s more expensive than multi-purpose compost, but performs better in bulb bowls or other containers without drainage. Hyacinths for forcing are available in just about every shade imaginable – red, pink, white, cream, yellow and blue. It is best to use a single colour in any one container as there is often some variation in flowering times between the colours, and ideally you want all the flowers out simultaneously. Specially prepared crocus, paperwhite narcissus and some other daffodil types are also available. If you want to make some seriously low-cost bowls, then do as I do and buy a large bag of inexpensive dwarf narcissus, such as the cheerful, often multi-headed ‘Tete-a-Tete’. They work very well, as do crocuses. Fill your bowl about one third full of compost for larger bulbs to one half full for smaller bulbs. Firm the compost gently, but don’t compact it or the roots of the bulbs will not penetrate it well and The Berkshire Break

you’ll end up with bulbs popping out of the top of the bowl. Position the bulbs pointed end uppermost – you can put them quite close to each other but not so close that they are touching their neighbours, and make sure they are not in contact with the sides of the bowl either. Nestle the bulbs gently into the compost and then top up with compost so that just the noses (the pointed end from which the shoots will appear) are poking out. Water the compost lightly, making sure it is moist but not waterlogged. Then cover the bowls loosely with a black bin liner and put them in a cool, dark place – a cool shed, garage or cupboard under the stairs is ideal. It needs to be both dark and cool or the bulbs will not form good root systems. Check the bowls every week or so and apply a little more water if necessary. It is time to bring the bowls out into the daylight once the shoots are about 2-3cm tall, which usually takes 3-5 weeks. Put them in a cool spot with plenty of natural daylight – a cool but frostfree greenhouse or a spare room window sill for instance. The shoots will continue to grow and develop a healthy green colour; they will now need a little more water. Once the flower buds just start to colour up you can put your bulb bowl in a warmer room, where you will soon be able to enjoy its perfume and good looks. If you want to give the bowl a really smart look, cover the compost with some moss or tie a seasonal ribbon around the bowl. Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood.com and you’ll find some great gardening items: Nemaslug, green controls for leatherjackets, chafer grubs, ants and greenfly, plus garden plant supports, raised bed kits, Easy-Tunnels, gardening tools, Grower Frames, signed books and more! You can even book Pippa for a gardening talk at your local gardening club.

One-Pan Chicken Roast One-Pan Lemon & Herb Chicken Roast A quick and easy roast for midweek or Sunday lunch with hardly any washing up!

minutes until the chicken is golden and cooked though and the potatoes are crisp and tender, turning the potatoes and basting the chicken with the pan juices once or twice. Serve from the roasting tin with steamed green vegetables, if liked.

Ingredients: • 50g butter, softened • 2 garlic cloves, crushed • 3 tbsp fresh chopped mixed herbs (see Tip) • 2 lemons • Salt and freshly ground black pepper • 8 chicken thigh portions • 500g baby potatoes, halved • 2 tbsp virgin olive oil • 4 sprigs fresh rosemary, broken into small sprigs Serves 4 Ready in 1 hour 30 mins

TIP: You can use any combination of mixed herbs for the garlic and herb butter – thyme, parsley and oregano all go particularly well with chicken. Or just choose one strongly flavoured herb such as tarragon.

1. Preheat the oven to 200°C/180°C fan/gas mark 6. Place the butter in a bowl and beat in the garlic, mixed herbs and the zest and 1 tbsp juice from one of the lemons. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. 2. Ease the skin away from the chicken thigh portions and gently push about 1 tsp of the herb and garlic butter under the skin of each portion then smooth the skin back down. Place all the chicken portions in a large roasting tin. 3. Toss the potatoes in half the olive oil and season. Scatter around the chicken along with the rosemary sprigs. Cut the second lemon into thin wedges and nestle them in between then chicken and potatoes. Drizzle over the rest of the olive oil. 4. Roast in the pre-heated oven for 55 minutes to 1 hour 15

Indoor games for wet autumn days

When the summer has gone and you’re not able to get out as much with your dog, it’s important to keep them active even if they’re in the house. Try these indoor games to stimulate mind and body, prevent boredom, and let your dog thrive through the wetter autumn months. Treasure Hunt It’s a good idea to play this

PETS

game in a room that has carpet or other non-slip flooring so your dog doesn’t injure itself in the excitement. Hide some of their favourite treats in one or more areas of your home, and let them hunt for the ‘treasure’. If your dog is more tempted by toys, you could always replace the treats with their favourite ones. This is also a good game if you make people they know the ‘treasure’ – especially when children are involved as it keeps them entertained too. Treat puzzles Stimulate your dog’s mind with chewable toys, puzzles, and activity balls in which you hide food treats. It will take some The Berkshire Break

time to work out how to get to the treats, and the activity balls keep them physically active too. Ball games If you have a long hallway, you can roll the ball along and get them to bring it back. Throwing a ball up the stairs is also a great way to give them the exercise they need without setting foot outside. You’ll have a very tired friend on your hands before long, ready to play again the next rainy day. www.bluecross.org.uk/pet-advice/indoorgames-dogs barkpost.com/life/12-rainy-dayentertainment-ideas-for-dogs By Ann Haldon
