AUGUST 2018

Loud and Proud I'm not sure what's happening to me in middle-age but I'm becoming a bit shouty. A bit, y'know, emotional. Easily excited. Loud. This was perhaps most apparent to me (and those around me) at the British Grand Prix last weekend. I have always loved F1. My Dad loved it, my husband loves it, and guess what ... so do the boys. So as a mega treat this year, we all went to Silverstone. I can't describe the joy when they each got their tickets, they were truly magic moments. Anyway, after a crack of dawn start and a pilgrimage up the M40 with a load of other petrolheads, we arrived at motor racing Mecca and took our places in the scorching sun. After various side-shows including an incredible display by the Red Arrows ... the main event. Followers of F1 will know what I am about to say next but to cut a long story short, Hamiliton (that's our boy) was kindly spun off by rival Raikkonen (not our boy) within about 10 seconds of the start of the race. So within about 20 seconds, he had gone from first place to second to last - in front of his home crowd. This is when I discovered my volume control issue. There were gasps, there was disbelief, there was head-clasping and there was this loud woman shouting "No, no, NOOO!" Whilst many remained quietly aggitated, staring at the screen for more information, she continued to wail and protest, loudly. Eventually, I recognised my own voice and tried to turn it down a bit, but then despair turned to rapture as (to cut another long story short) over the course of the race, Hamilton carved his way through the pack into second place! "Yes, Lewis, YESSS!" said the woman. Very loudly. Lots of times. I would usually describe myself as quite well mannered and a little reserved (until wine has been taken) but it seems sporting events are getting under my skin. Last night was England 'v' Croatia. I was hoping to write a different editorial today, full of joy and expectation - alas, no. But the noisy woman was here again. She was happy, then sad, then really sad - and everyone knew it. "Mum, you scared me!"

LANDSCAPES

. . . . .

said my youngest after we conceded the second goal. I'm scaring myself too love, with my new found passion for sport. Tonight I am going to St Crispins to see a very good friend's son play Danny in Grease. I've been excited about this for months, singing "You're the one that I want" and "Greased Lightnin'" round the house and by my own admission, I'm pretty good. I could be Danny (not coy enough for Sandy). Anyway, I'm just hoping that the loud woman doesn't come out to play tonight. I shall chain myself to the seat and try to not to embarrass my children and jeopardise my friendship. Perhaps this all harks back to my missed vocation as a rock star. There's a shouty extrovert in me desperate to be the centre of attention. Instead I work from home, mostly alone ... ah, it's starting to make sense. Actually, this somewhat relates to a conversation I had yesterday with a friend about opportunities. She has a passion for history; in fact, I would say she is the most enthusiastic and knowledgeable historian I know. Turns out, as a child, she had the 4 volumes of Winston Churchill's "A History of the English-Speaking People" in her bedroom, and in the days before the internet and mobile phones, she read them many times. My middle son is a beautiful pianist - would he be that, had we not been given a piano 10 years ago? I highly doubt it. In fact, Lewis Hamilton (the most successful British driver of all time) was bought a go-kart at the age of 6 ... So my friend and I concluded that in order to find "your thing" you must be exposed to the right "thing", ideally early in life. And as one doesn't know what one's thing is until one finds it, one must try as many things as possible. And perhaps by doing so, you can avoid being frustrated and shouty in middle-age. Although obviously, my thing is making magazines and writing frivolous editorials. Happy August to you.

AUGUST 2018

Summer Fun! If spending precious time with your family is top of your list this summer or catching up with your friends you haven’t seen for ages or even somewhere you can be a big kid again – then this is the place to be! We have been busy bees behind the scenes planning our 4th Summer Fun Day to bring you a break from the norm. Our Fun Day is about creating memories that you’ll treasure forever. Sadly, that is all we have left of Ollie, memories that we wish we could still be making and photo’s that we wish we could still be taking. Ollie was just 5 when he passed away. Within 10 days of seeing signs that Ollie wasn’t right, 3 visits to the doctor and him saying "I have a dizzy head" he was unable to walk. 12 weeks later and the day before his 6th birthday Ollie passed away peaceful at Helen & Douglas House. Since then the Ollie Young Foundation (OYF) raises money in his name to fund research in to brain tumours in children at Portsmouth’s Cellular & Molecular Neuro-Oncology research Centre. We also support CLIC Sargent and Helen & Douglas House as both these charities are what got us through the most difficult time in our lives and without these we wouldn’t have the happy memories or the photos of Ollie’s little journey. Both Helen & Douglas House and Clic Sargent, along with the some of our PhD students form Portsmouth University will be there on the day, so you can have a chat and find out what these organisations do and where the money raised is being used to make a difference. With a lot of our stalls this year run by volunteers, "Olliette’s" you can be happy in the knowledge that the money you spend on these stalls will go directly to the charity and those it supports. We will be using a token system again this year for all OYF games and activities and these can be brought at the OYF stall. This includes our very own "Olliestacle course", Creation Station, Reeves Rangers with their ‘beat the keeper’ and our own licensed bar and cakes too. There’s plenty to keep all ages entertained including: face-painting, henna-art, cheeky seaside themed photo board (be sure to send us your pics!), Sam the Train, Inflatables, Zorbs, Archery, Laser Tag, Pop up golf, free kids play area – conveniently next to the bar area, and we may even have a little surprise from a galaxy far, far away! We’ve food and tasty treats to tantalise your taste buds, Tanya from "A Bit of a Do Caterers" is back hosting the BBQ along with Darren from "Little Reds Pizza" with his delicious handmade pizzas and a welcome addition this year to Vegan Blue. We’re extremely grateful to Jason from Berkshire Events for his continued support of the OYF. On the day he’ll introduce our arena acts, currently including the very talented Pauly Zarb, Platform YP Performing Arts School, magnificent martial arts from Matt Fiddes and Lynette Stephenson Academy of Dance. Jason will also be keeping us entertained (in the sunshine – we’ve booked that too!) with the latest tunes and there may be chance for some audience participation too! The Berkshire Break

If you fancy a little retail therapy we’ve a super selection of local makers and sellers from personalised pieces to handmade crafts and jewellery. We’ve an impressive 25+ prizes (so far!) for our raffle – ranging from tickets to local family attractions, to vouchers for local restaurants and photography vouchers too – some perfect opportunities to make some wonderful memories with family and friends. Since starting the Ollie Young Foundation we’ve had the most amazing local (and beyond) support, and this continues with sponsorship towards the event this year from Martin & Pole Estate Agents, AVS Fencing, Blueprint Fitted Furniture, Clifton Ingram Solicitors, Worthington Finance, Edge Beanbags, Prospect Estate Agents and Ashridge Farm Shop – a massive big thank you from all of us at the OYF. Entry is, as always, FREE. As one of our visitors who have attended every year says ... "Definitely going again this year - it's the best one around; quality stalls, reasonably priced and unique rides/games - beats all local organised fayres/events" Come and see for yourself at the Ollie Young Foundation Summer Fun Day at Cantley Park on Sunday 12th August from 11-4pm. We promise it will be an Ollie-tastic day out!

Thames Hospice About us

need us when we open in 2020. As well as increasing the number of beds from 17 to 28, we will increase our weekly outpatient provision from 5 to 6 days and our other day services (physiotherapy, occupational therapy, complementary therapy, group sessions) from 2 to 4 days. We will provide comfort, privacy and dignity for our patients and their families, without compromise. For many, this will be their last bedroom. We wish it to be the best. Bedrooms will have a warm, homely feel with medical equipment like oxygen lines and hoists hidden discretely away. Each room will have the following: • views over a private garden with floor to ceiling glass doors • automated beds and mattresses which adjust to provide maximum comfort and relief • wet-rooms, fully accessible for wheelchair users with gesturecontrolled showers, sinks and toilets • motion sensors on doors, chairs and beds the protect patients at risk of falling • TV and internet access Each room will have a sofa-bed and families will be welcome to stay overnight. We believe that partners who have shared a bed for many decades should not be forced apart in their final days together, so double beds will be widely available. We will provide medical outpatient care from our Paul Bevan Community Therapy Centre. In addition, patients will have access to occupational therapy, physiotherapy and complementary therapies. A fully equipped gym will support people to improve their fitness and muscle strength after treatment; vital in improving quality of life. For the first time, we will have space to host groups and have devised a programme of therapeutic and social activities which will support patients and their families as they navigate life with illness. Our new hospice will also have education centre (for our staff and external use, a place for excellence in palliative care learning and development), a dedicated space for families and onsite café, a jacuzzi bathroom in each wing, spacious grounds and gardens, The Sanctuary (space for quiet reflection, prayer and also celebration / memorial events and parties). The new hospice will cost an estimated £18 million to build and equip. We are asking our community to come together to contribute towards the £6 million still needed to create this transformational facility. If you would like to hear more about how you can support our exciting new build plans, please contact our Fundraising Team on 01753 848926. www.thameshospice.org.uk

Thames Hospice is a charity providing expert care for people living with life-limiting illnesses in East Berkshire and South Buckinghamshire. A vital part of our work is also supporting their families and carers. Our highly skilled team works with the patient and their loved ones to care for their physical, social and psychological needs. Our services include therapy, nursing and medical care, as well as practical and emotional support in our Hospice at Windsor and in patients' homes. It costs £8million every year to keep our Hospice running. We rely on 70% of our income from charitable donations, which enables us to provide our services free of charge, 365 days a year, to the people who need us.

Our services Our team of Nurses, Doctors and Therapists, assisted by Health Care Assistants, provide expert nursing and medical care to our patients. We care for patients at home or in our Inpatient and Day Therapy Units - providing the right level of care when and where it is needed. We provide respite, help relieve pain and manage symptoms while ensuring we give the best emotional, practical and spiritual support to our patients and their families. We also offer a wide range of therapies to support our patients and their families’ physical, psychological, social and spiritual needs. We also provide a 24-hour palliative and end-of-life care telephone service to give advice to local people in the last 12 months of life and their families, as well as healthcare professionals who need guidance and support on delivering palliative care. The specialist team is available 24/7, 365 days a year, to provide guidance on symptom control, practical advice and emotional support. If you would like to make a donation, access our services or volunteer, please visit our website at www.thameshospice.org.uk

A new home for local hospice care Our hospice is at maximum occupancy. As one of the busiest hospices in the UK, our occupancy rates are 10% higher than the national average. We currently have up to 10 people per day waiting for much-needed care. The situation will only get worse as our local population ages over the next 20 years. Our current building is tired and requires refurbishment. After reviewing a number of options, we have concluded that it will not meet our future needs and that we are now left with a building which is getting in the way of the care we really want to provide. If we don’t do the work, we risk more people being turned away, more people being left to cope at home, more families left to care for loved ones without adequate training / knowledge / access to pain relieving drugs, higher hospital admissions, increased number of deaths in hospital and a general decline in the quality of care, in line with our inability to make improvements to or building. In July 2018, we were granted planning permission to build a new, purpose-built hospice by Bray Lake, in the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead. We are confident our new 28-bed hospice and expanded community services will be able to support all those who The Berkshire Break

AUGUST 2018

Purpose & Passion after Cancer If your life has been touched by cancer, there’s an event happening in Reading this August that aims to help you become UNSTOPPABLE. The UNSTOPPABLE ME! Bootcamp is at the Madjeski Stadium on Monday, 13th August, and tickets are just £20. This empowering event is being held by Vicky Martin, an awardwinning Inspirational Speaker, who’s been working with cancer patients since 2010. Vicky is a micro-pigmentation and tattoo artist, who has developed a unique method of creating lifelike 3-D nipple tattoos for women who had undergone breast-cancer surgery. Now Vicky, whose clinic is based in Wokingham, teaches her techniques all over the world. As well as creating physical change in cancer patients, Vicky is passionate about creating mental and spiritual changes too: “Every day I work on cancer VIPs and it’s heartbreaking to see such beautiful, strong women feeling lost, alone and scared. That’s why I created the UNSTOPPABLE ME! one-day event. I’m going to share the most powerful techniques I’ve learned through NLP and neuroscience training, to help break down your mental blocks and deepest fears. Then, along with guest speakers from the Victoria’s Promise Breast-Cancer charity, I’m going to bring the strongest, newest version of you back, with passion and purpose. It’s going to be magical!" The UNSTOPPABLE ME! guest speakers are Alex Eastman and Stuart Ross from Victoria’s Promise, a charity created to help young

women through their cancer journey, offering specialised support and funding for welcomed reliefs like massages and wigs. Alex and Stuart will be talking about “How to start living your best life” and “Finding your way out of chaos and into purpose”. During lunch, guests will hear uplifting live music from Lady Nade, a local singer whose voice was described by the BBC as, “a satin cure for the soul”. As well as providing positive, practical techniques for creating change, Vicky hopes the UNSTOPPABLE ME! Bootcamp will provide a supportive place for cancer patients, and those who love them, to meet others in the same position. “During the event, I’m hoping my guests will network, and feel like they are creating a family with others that have walked a similar path. That way, they are never alone." UNSTOPPABLE ME! Bootcamp Date: 13 August 2018 Time: 9:30am-5pm. Lunch and refreshments included. Venue: Madjeski Stadium, Reading, Berkshire, RG2 0FL. Price: £20. vickymartinmethod.com/product/unstoppable-bootcamp/

around the streets of St Ives, with which he has had a long association. The Cornish coastal scene is still a feature of his work, together with local scenes along the Thames. In the last 10 years however, he has branched out into more expressive work, which he produces from his experience and imagination in his garden studio. Ted has held many solo exhibitions in Henley, Reading and London. He is a regular exhibitor with the Henley Guild and other local venues. He has a permanent exhibition of some 20 paintings at the Twyford Health Centre, enjoyed by patients and staff and raises money for medical equipment. Wokingham Art Society - 63 Years of Art ! This year the Wokingham Art Society will hold their 63rd Annual Summer Exhibition and Sale of paintings, ceramics, jewellery and cards from July 21st – August 4th. Venue: St. Paul’s Parish Rooms, Reading Road, Wokingham RG41 1EH, where approximately 100 local artists will exhibit their work, during the 2 weeks. There is also a “Young Artist” corner where children can create their own ”masterpieces” to either take home or have on display, leaving you in peace to have a wander around the exhibition. This now well established event first took place 63 years ago, in 1956. when a few local artists showed their pictures in the forecourt of the then Wokingham Library – Montague House, which is now Prezzo’s restaurant in Broad Street. This exhibition was a tremendous success and, ever since, the two-week Annual Summer Exhibition remains the Society’s main event, retaining its motto: “Buy and Take Home an Original Work of Art”. This, by the way, is quite a unique feature, as visitors can buy and take home an original work of art which is then replaced straight away with another original piece. This way the exhibition is constantly showing a different display. The Society now boasts a membership of approximately 200 local artists, of which well over 100 are exhibiting members. Open daily from 10:00 am to 5:30 pm. Late night opening Thursdays until 8:00 pm. Admission free. Car parking and refreshments available. Disabled access. For further information, visit their website: www. wokinghamartsociety.org.uk

Children & Youth Worker Churches in Twyford, Ruscombe and Hurst have combined to appoint a Children and Families Worker who will support and encourage youngsters throughout all three parishes. The role has been taken up by Ele Buckley, who lives in Charvil and has been worshipping at St Mary’s in Twyford since 2011 when she and husband Steven moved to Twyford from West Acton. Born in Cornwall, Ele gained a degree in English at Cambridge University and later met her husband when they both worked for Christian Aid in London. Since moving to the area she has been part of a team running the Trailblazers and Explorers groups for young members of the congregation at St. Mary’s on Sundays. She has also been working as a fund-raiser at the Reading-based charity Launchpad for the past six years. Through her role in Launchpad Ele has become a well-known visitor to schools in the area, including Reading’s Leighton Park and Caversham Primary and also the Piggott and Colleton schools in Twyford. Community fund-raising has seen her become involved with bodies such as the Women’s Institute in Henley. Her work organising local events for Launchpad included the annual carol service at Reading Minster and the Big Sleep Out at Queen Anne’s School in Caversham.

Come and Sing Saturday 6th October, 78 Crockhamwell Rd, Woodley RG5 3LA Twyford Singers invite you to join them for a Come and Sing day on Saturday 6th October. The Day will be led by Musical Director Helen Styles and features John Rutter’s Requiem. Tickets are available at a special price of £18, or £15 for bookings of 10+, if booked before 31st August 2018. Thereafter they will be £20. Charge includes music scores, tea/coffee and delicious homemade cake. For more information please see www.twyford-singers.org.uk. Twyford Village Fete Twyford’s annual Village Fete will be held on Saturday 18th August 2018. The annual event includes children’s races – traditional egg and spoon, 3 legged races, blindfold running and sack races organised by Castle Royle and Barnes Fitness. These are much enjoyed by the parents and children. Our visiting bands are always popular for those relaxing under the marquees with drinks provided by the Beer Festival bar, Duke of Wellington’s Gin’s and Age Concern. Children are entertained by Punch and Judy, circus skills workshops, appearances from Disney characters, farm animals and side stall activities. Many local organisations are represented and raise funds from the stalls. Entertainment this year is from The Savage Skills BMX team.

Ted Hallett’s Studio & Garden Show Exhibition and sale of paintings, prints and cards, with 10% of sales in aid of RBH Cardiac Unit. This is Ted’s winding down event so there are loads of works at bargain prices. Ted Hallett is self-taught and has painted throughout his teenage and adult life. Trained as a mechanical design engineer, he has successfully combined a career in engineering and art but decided to paint full time in 2002. He works in a variety of mediums, including oil, acrylic, watercolour and gouache. Most of his work is figurative, sometimes impressionistic and occasionally abstracted. Prior to 1990, he painted mainly in Cornwall and particularly The Berkshire Break

Come and Play Short Mat Bowls Want to try a new sport? It's gentle but lots of fun and you don't need to be skilled to do it. All you need are some flat shoes to get started as we can supply bowls for you to try. The aim of the game is to get your bowl as close as you can to the smaller ball called a jack. There is a wooden block in the middle of the mat that you have to avoid but everyone hits it and it adds to the fun. We meet at Wokingham youth centre every Friday night from 6.45 to 9.30 so do come along and try your luck. 17

Green Fingers Lethal Leatherjackets

an opened-out plastic compost bag as this is particularly thick plastic. Next morning, lift the polythene and you’ll see the pests on the soil or lawn surface. So how do you know leatherjackets are to blame? Leatherjackets are even less good-looking than their parents: greyish-brown, tubular, legless, up to about 4.5cm long and so nearly transparent that you can often see inside them, lunch and all. You can remove a good number by repeating this black polythene trick – then, collect up the pests and put them on the bird table where they’ll be a useful source of free and nutritious bird food. If you want a much quicker, easier and more thorough solution then I suggest you use the biological control nematode ‘Nemasys Leatherjacket Killer’. It is quick and easy to apply – I just use a watering can and water it onto the affected area shortly after I’ve seen the first daddy-longlegs and when soil conditions are right, so usually late August to late October. As long as you keep the area moist for about three or four weeks, it works a treat – and is even safe if you have a dog, pet rabbit or other pets (or kids!) who use the lawn. So how can you get hold of this? There are two pack sizes available, suitable for standard lawns or those with a very large area to cover but you won’t find them in garden centres as they have a short shelf life. You can, however, find out more and order them from www. pippagreenwood.com/products in the Protect Your Plants section. We’ll send them out by first class post in an insulated envelope for you to show those pesky leatherjackets who’s the boss!

By Pippa Greenwood

Daddy-longlegs or crane-flies are starting to hatch out now – you may have seen their dangly-legged dancing as they get into your house, clattering against the windows and the lights? Maybe they are not your favourite creatures – indeed, many shy away from them! But these are the adults and it is their young – known as leatherjackets – that really cause grief in gardens. If your lawn has yellowing patches on it or you’ve noticed it being ripped up in the last few weeks, chances are leatherjackets are to blame, and it is likely that the problem will get a lot worse. So what happens? Well, leatherjackets feed on the roots of grass (and can also cause problems in flowerbeds and vegetable plots) and this may cause the plants they attack to be weakened and even die back; worst of all, these juicy larvae are an extremely tasty snack if you happen to be an animal such as a crow, rook, magpie, badger or a fox. So as soon as there are leatherjackets in your garden, these animals come along in search of them, ripping up your lawn or excavating beds and borders in the process. Lawns are usually worst affected and can be devastated in a matter of days. What is the best way to check if you have them? Early in the evening, water a couple of the yellowed patches really thoroughly and do the same with a patch that has been ripped up. Next, cover these areas in black polythene weighed down with a couple of bricks or similar. A double layer of black bin liners will do fine or, better still, use

Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood.com and you’ll find some great gardening items: Nemaslug, green controls for leatherjackets, chafer grubs, ants and greenfly, plus garden plant supports, raised bed kits, Easy-Tunnels, gardening tools, Grower Frames, signed books and more! You can even book Pippa for a gardening talk at your local gardening club.

What your rabbit needs to be happy and healthy

Rabbits have specific needs if they’re to live happy and healthy lives. From clean living conditions to a nutritional diet, here are some of their basic, non-negotiable requirements for health and happiness. Living quarters A spacious, safe and secure hutch with an attached and enclosed outdoor run allows your rabbit to get the exercise

PETS

they need, as they love to run around and chew or play with toys. They require a safe, quiet and enclosed place to rest – this could be a separate ‘room’ within the hutch, or an area away from the main living quarters divided by hay or straw. Protection from extreme weather, and predators such as foxes or other pets in the area, is also important. Nutrition Rabbits need lots of fresh vegetables, particularly leafy greens, rabbit pellets, a little fruit, and plenty of hay to grind down their teeth. They also like to eat grass, but not the clippings from your lawnmower The Berkshire Break

– grass should be growing within their reach, or freshly picked in clumps from the garden. A fresh supply of clean drinking water is essential, and in summer you’ll need to change it regularly so they don’t pick up any bacteria. Health checks Their nails and teeth need to be checked regularly to make sure they’re not too long, and also their tails and bottom area, particularly in the summer when fly strike is a huge danger. Having a vet check them at least annually is also essential for long-term health. www.rspca.org.uk/adviceandwelfare/pets/ rabbits/-/articleName/CAD_Rabbits By Ann Haldon

Summer Holiday Finances If you’re worried about the cost of entertaining your children this summer, you’re not alone. It’s been estimated the average family spends £389 on entertaining the kids during the summer holidays.¹ So what can you do to ease your financial situation at this time of year? Here are a few ideas to help you manage the cost of entertaining the children and deal with the inevitable back-to-school expenditure. Prioritise your spending Prioritising essential outgoings, such as rent, mortgage payments or council tax, allows you to steer clear of serious financial trouble. You’re not risking the roof over your head and will still be able to buy the groceries to feed your family. Make a budget By carefully budgeting before the summer begins, you may find areas where you can cut back. Knowing exactly where your money goes means you can consciously reduce your outgoings wherever possible, and potentially find some extra money to spend on taking the kids for a day out. Find free or low-cost activities in your area Make full use of the internet by searching for free activities in your area. You should be able to find a few deals on days out, or coupons and vouchers for money off entry to kids’ attractions. Theme parks can be particularly expensive for families, but with a ‘2 for 1’ offer on admissions, or a meal deal when you’re there, you’ll all enjoy a great day out without it breaking the bank. Get the children involved with money If your children are old enough you can introduce them to the realities of managing money, albeit with small amounts at first. They’ll begin to understand that money is finite, and they can’t have everything they want.

What about back-toschool costs? The cost of school uniforms and all the other ancillary bits and pieces the children need for the new term can be the final straw for your finances at the end of the summer holidays, so what can you do to help yourself financially in this respect? • Buying school uniform towards the end of the summer holidays is a good idea. Children grow so quickly and this way you can also make sure they get the most wear out of their uniform. • Some schools operate second-hand uniform sales when the end of the holidays is approaching – this can offer huge savings as you don’t have to buy new items. • Giving a slightly older child some money to buy their own stationery or other school items can teach them about money management, particularly if you let them keep the change. For families on low incomes, dealing with school summer holiday costs adds stress to an already challenging financial situation. Keeping the children entertained can be expensive, but with a little planning and budgeting, hopefully it won’t impact too heavily on family finances at this time or during the rest of the year. ¹ www.business-reporter.co.uk/2017/06/19/cost-of-entertainingchildren-during-summer-holidays-estimated-at-389/ www.moneyadviceservice.org.uk/blog/how-to-handle-back-toschool-costs www.moneyadviceservice.org.uk/blog/can-you-cope-with-thecost-of-kids-this-summer
