Hello from our Queen Bee Just when things were appearing to be more under control, along comes not one but two new Covid variants. Whilst we wait for the number of vaccinations to rise and new cases to fall, this issue has been extended by a month and starts out as digital, hopefully to be printed in the near future. We were worried about spreading the disease before but, as we know, these variants are more virulent, hence our caution. The good news is that spring is on the way, bringing with it Easter and better weather. Our recipe for Hot Cross Buns and ideas for Easter Egg decoration go hand in hand, as do the gloves you’ll need for the gardening suggestions. Then we look at lending a hand in various organisations, and our cycling guru gives us some handy tips before we take our bikes on the road again. As well as a “great read” reader offer and our very different prize competition, we have a French/English crossword and a wordsearch for all the family. Both are

ideal when it comes to stay-at-home preferences, as is the addition of films and series, in French with English sub-titles, to our streaming suggestions. Food has gone fishy with scrummy lobster and wines with a crunch, plus a delicious scallops dish from our Guest Chef. Property-wise, we go back in time with some older, traditional suggestions for spring cleaning, and hear about the future of the French property market. Well-being looks at naturopathy and, also in Advice, we hear about the impact that is starting to unfold on the financial services market now that the UK has left the EU. Finally but far from least, there are the What’s On pages which were correct at the time of writing but which we urge you to check before attending. Covid has a lot to answer for in almost every aspect of our lives but let’s keep a positive mindset and hope for a better year ahead. Stay safe.

Precision & Procedure No two words better describe how to practise French Law.

France, like no other country, is a legal and administrative obstacle course. This is why when you choose a lawyer to handle a French matter, you need to work with a firm who only specialises in French Law. We have English French-trained lawyers (avocats), living and working in Toulouse. Being there on the spot is certainly practical, but the secret of Bright Avocats’ success is simple: listening, asking the right questions, and finding the most effective course to a satisfactory conclusion.

As a focal point in the movement for women’s rights on a global basis, this year’s UN International Women’s Day (IWD) on 8 March has the theme “Choose to Challenge: a challenged world is an alert

world and from challenge comes change. So let’s all choose to challenge.” To forge a gender equal world the aim is to celebrate tech women and innovation, demand equality for women in sport, build inclusive workplaces where women can thrive, forge women’s empowerment, educate women on health choice decisions and increase visibility of women creatives, globally. www. internationalwomensday.com/

ST PATRICK’S DAY Remembering the foremost patron Saint of Ireland and held on 17 March, this cultural and religious festival was originally a feast day. Nowadays it is celebrated around the world, honouring Irish heritage with festival goers dressed in green, wearing shamrocks and taking part in parades and religious processions. Usually a day filled with fun, laughter and Irish music, it may well be different this year but, if we can, let’s try to support our local venues and perhaps order a take-away for a celebration at home. We could even organise St Patrick’s themed zoom evenings!

FREE FLIGHT CHANGES To provide as much flexibility and confidence as possible, Ryanair has extended its zero change fee for bookings made before 31st March, 2021. A Ryanair spokesperson also confirmed “Mindful that Covid restrictions change regularly, Ryanair is now allowing up to two free flight date changes on all such bookings up until the end of October, 2021. Customers can now book flights to see family and friends this Easter or book a well-deserved summer 2021 break with confidence, knowing that if they need to postpone or change their travel dates, they can do so with a € zero change fee until the end of October 2021.” www.ryanair.com

Stepping Out

RICHER AND BETTER

Multi-instrumentalist and singer, DB Clifford, is famous for his soul/jazz music and has just released his third studio album, Lucky Me. Winner of the John Lennon Award for Best Pop Song of the Year in 2011 with New State of Mind, he feels this latest album is the best he has ever made. With richer writing inspired by a difficult breakup and rooted in honest and inspiring subjects, it expresses a positive attitude towards life that, it’s claimed, has previously not been achieved in his work. You can find out exactly what he means at Auditorium Espace François Mitterand in BERGERAC on 30 April. 05 53 57 71 51.

Don Giovanni is quite a guy and has more than earned his reputation, as you will see in this direct transmission of the famous opera from the New York Met to the giant screen in VILLEREAL on 27 March. Mozart’s music fills the air as Don Giovanni’s seductive antics take a dramatic turn. An irrepressible womaniser, he tries to seduce Donna Anna but fails so, true to form, he moves on to another conquest, Zerlina who is promised to another. What he didn’t expect was the return of Donna Elvira, his former mistress who is still in love with him. Sounds like trouble is on the horizon! 05 53 36 00 37.

Featuring sounds from the latest album, Camarades, it’s an eclectic, sometimes political, blend of invited artists from the world of reggae, dub, hip-hop, rock and song. Organised by the Staccato organisation, there are no musical barriers, just one message: unity is strength. It’s no surprise it received “rave” reviews. www.paysdelauzun.com

A Celtic Night

The Moorings is an energetic, contagious quintet that spreads a fever (well, that’s what it says in their publicity material), of Celtic folk music mixed with alternative rock. Faithful to both popular and traditional Irish music, they are described as a mix between The Pogues and The Dubliners. You can see their unique style and sound, including a nod to Irish punk, at Les Docks, CAHORS, from 21:00 on 18 March. As a real bonus they share the bill with O’Danöz, a traditional Irish band that brings Celtic music to life with flute, violin, banjo, guitar, bodhran and the dulcet tones of the female lead singer. www.lesdocks-cahors.fr

A juggler and an acrobat bring a performance that is, to say the least, eventful to SAINT-CERE on 26 March. Their contemporary performance somehow brings together these two very different disciplines which are usually so far apart. Four singular talents meet with flute, cello, piano and drums, four instruments that rarely come together, to perform Altérité (Otherness). The Edouard Ferlet quartet goes against the grain of current trends with improvisation that highlights Maqâms from the Middle East, rhythm from the Caribbean, and classical echoes on the cello in a performance that reveals music that is both rare and innovative. Pour Hêtre is a new performance by Cie IETO that combines contemporary dance with acrobatics and wood, Beech to be exact. Bringing a symbolical forest to the stage in MOISSAC on 9 April, each element, from the branches, trunk and even sawdust decorates and supports their poetic, lyrical dance. Sometimes grand, sometimes intimate and tiny, their movements epitomise the strength and calm that can be found in the forest, together with the shelter that it provides for other species. Intrigued? Hope

Springs Eternal

Now, as we move into spring, the garden should offer hope, inspiration and joy as nature proves, once again, that she can overcome adversity.

26

www.thelocalbuzzmag.com

HOMES + GARDENS

Sue has lived in SW France for 15 years and founded the website French Properties Direct. Busy creating her second French garden, she wants it to be eye catching, filled with interest, and productive, regardless of the season. Here she talks about the optimism and cheer to be found in the spring garden.

2020 was a difficult year and without doubt many people, both existing gardeners and converts, found solace in their own patch of earth, re-connecting with birds, insects and wider aspects of nature as never before.

GR EE N SH O OTS A N D UNF U RLING LEAVES After months of cold it is always a delight to see the tiny green shoots of springtime. Following the tough little Snowdrops of January, Crocuses, Daffodils, Hellebores, Muscari and many other early spring flowering bulbs, shrubs and perennials burst into life. They take advantage of the wetter weather, the light available under deciduous trees and shrubs and the lengthening days to flower and set seed before the heat and drought of summer forces them into retreat.

At the same time buds on trees and shrubs begin to break and fuzzy halos of green appear to outline distant woodland. It is always a pleasure to bring a small branch of unfurling leaves into the warmth of the house and watch them gradually open.

A WO O D L AN D G ARD EN I N S P RI N GT I ME

We created beds under two large trees; a walnut and a fig. Walnuts, in particular, are supposed to be difficult to plant under. They produce a chemical called juglone which can be toxic to other plants but I’ve found that, with plenty of mulch and some judicious watering, this bed has become a successful mini woodland garden. There’s an abundance of plant activity in the early months when the trees have no leaves to obscure light and, during the summer, they provide shade, protecting the plants beneath them. In February and March these woodland beds are filled with hybrids of Oriental Hellebores, many of which have self-seeded. These continue to flower for weeks with the flowers gradually fading to a papery memory of the original. I leave the attractive seed heads on until early summer (which is why we have so many seedlings) and then throughout the rest

Honeybees generally start to leave the hive when the temperature reaches 15°C but bumble bees, especially the buff-tailed bumble bee which is the one most commonly seen, have the ability to forage in much colder weather. of the year the dark leaves provide weed suppressing ground cover. The Hellebores are interspersed with Daffodils (Tète a Tète seems to work particularly well), Aconites and Muscari in February, with Violets, early Tulips and Aquilegia appearing in March. We also have a couple of big clumps of Euphorbia Robbiae (a thug, which will take over given half a chance) and magnificent Acanthus Mollis with massive, dark green leaves to add height and structure. These beds have grown every year and have recently become difficult to weed so I have now laid flattish cobbles at strategic points, like stepping-stones across the beds, helping with the weeds and giving a little extra structure.

T H E S O L AC E O F A S U N N Y WA L L

Meanwhile, in sunnier spots in the garden against a south or west facing wall, for example, spring’s arrival is being announced by bees and other bugs noisily making the best of warmer days.

F LO R A L B E AU TY AND SCENT

Flowering plants such as Ornamental Currants, Mimosa, Forsythia, Viburnum Bodnantense, Rosemary and even early Roses are all in bloom by the end of March. Rosa Banksia is particularly successful in sheltered places, forming enormous cascades of tiny (usually) yellow flowers. Early flowering shrubs need to be pruned, where necessary, after flowering as their flowers are produced on last year’s growth. Prune them at the back-end of the year and you are cutting off next spring’s flowers. Early flowers on deciduous shrubs tend to occur before the leaves and look sensational when framed by the bare twigs of February and March. Then you have the scent! Many early spring flowers, like Cosmos or Dahlias for instance, are not showy so they tend to announce themselves by their scent. Early Jasmines, Mahonia, Daphne Odora (plant it by a path to catch the astounding perfume as you walk past), and Mimosa will gently scent the air on a chilly spring day. As a final idea, design into your garden a favourite corner for your morning cup of coffee where you can sit in the spring sunshine and drink in the sights, sounds and scents. It really is great for the morale!

Longer, warmer days and warmer soil means there is no time to be lost if you are to stay on top of garden tasks. • Prune winter and early spring flowering shrubs once they have flowered. • Divide snowdrops and aconites before the leaves die back. • Finish dividing/moving perennials before the clocks go forward. • Sow tomatoes indoors in early March and, as the weather turns warmer, sow other seeds outside. • As the soil warms up you can divide and move grasses. • Plant summer flowering bulbs. • Keep on top of weeds by weeding regularly and mulching when the soil is wet. • Feed roses and other shrubs, and tie in any new growth as it develops.

28

• Stake tall perennial plants while there is still time for the new growth to hide the stakes. • Protect young growth from slugs and snails and watch out for aphids. • When working on wet ground stand on boards to avoid compacting the soil. • Start your summer feeding regime for citrus plants. • Look for the return of Hoopoes. They winter in Southern Spain or Africa and come here to nest and raise their young each year.

The findings of a trial that has been running since 2016 have resulted in a new law for motorcyclists from 1 February. Even in the departments where it was once authorised, motorbikes are no longer allowed to overtake car queues. Fines of up to €135 and three points from their licence await them if they do. Changing lanes without indicating can land them with a €35/3pt fine, and not respecting the safety distances, riding a motorbike on a bus or cycle lane, or overtaking on the right may also lead to a €135/3pt penalty.

We have winners! A night at Château du Palanquey & SPA at Sainte Colombe was won by Daniel Hepworth, in our October/ November competition. In our December/January competition, Lydia Hehir is the lucky winner of a night and breakfast for two in a superior room, plus access to the Guerlain Spa at The Grand Hotel in Bordeaux. We hope you both thoroughly enjoy your stays.

SPRING Clean-Up Are we still following Mrs Beeton’s suggestions?

1974 and contained 1344 pages. Whilst sticking to the principles of the original publication, the newer edition takes into account that modern equipment, such as vacuum cleaners, means that spring cleaning is no longer the dreaded upheaval that it once was. Nevertheless, it adds, bright sunshine after the dark months, fires and mud of winter does highlight areas that need attention and it advocates the following tasks.

“Men are now so well served out of doors, - at their clubs, well-ordered taverns, and dining-houses, that in order to compete with the attractions of these places, a mistress must be thoroughly acquainted with the theory and practice of cookery, as well as be perfectly conversant with all the other arts of making and keeping a comfortable home”. So wrote Mrs Beeton in the preface to the first edition of her Book of Household Management in 1861. How different the world is today and we thought it would be interesting, and maybe even useful, to have a look at the section on spring cleaning. These notes are from the 13th impression of the 1960 version which still refers to the “young housewife” but, by then, the title had changed to Cookery and Household Management. It was sold for £3.95 in

• T urn out cupboards, drawers and “lumber-rooms”, throwing away accumulated junk likely to attract moths and mice (and goodness knows, living in rural France, we can have some of those). • Cupboards and drawers should be scrubbed out, dried, relined with fresh paper and tidily arranged. • Winter clothes and blankets are to be washed or despatched to the cleaners before being stored in camphor and sealed in mothproof bags. • Bedding, including mattress covers and blankets, should be washed, and mattresses and pillows left in the sun for a few hours. • For carpets, including stair carpets, alternate between going to the cleaners or being hung and well-beaten outside before a surface shampoo.

• Whilst the carpets and rugs are up, scrub the floors. • Cushion covers, curtains and loose covers should be washed or cleaned. • Wipe down walls. • Pay attention to paintwork, light fittings, ornaments, etc. • Check over household equipment and stock, sorting them for repair, renovation or disposal. The book also adds that the careful housewife, who doesn’t have even the minimum of help, would be wise to spread spring cleaning over several weeks, taking one room at a time, always starting at the top and working down. This is, of course, in addition to the weekly and daily routines! So, regardless of whether you are male or female, young or old, how are you doing against her suggestions? Do you follow her routines today, or have you started your own “clean slate” as it were? Still in print, this complete study on the efficient, happy home and its workings now includes additions such as needlework and flower arranging as well as furnishing with antiques, etiquette, laundry work, nutrition, labour-saving kitchen equipment and legal and medical notes. It’s a must read if you aspire to keeping the perfect house!

STREAMING FRENCH

Listen in French, read in English Watching a film in French with English sub-titles is a great way to learn or improve your French! Quelque chose pour tout le monde! NON FICTION (DOUBLES VIES)

THE TRUTH

Adultery, midlife crisis and art sums up this tale of an editor and an author from Paris who struggle with their careers, relationships and the literary industry. A gentle satire with some smart dialogue and exceptional performances throughout. Rated R.

We will let the trailer sum itself up “A warm and moving family portrait with the kind of sensitivity and emotional intelligence only a master storyteller can bring to the table. A charming love letter to Deneuve and an affectionate ode to French cinema itself”. PG

MANDIBULES If you found a gigantic fly in the boot of your car you might be tempted to run. Not these two halfwitted guys. They decide to train it, domesticating it to earn money, then they meet up with some girls and their lives change big time. Some bad language but hilarious.

LUPIN

FLEUVE NOIR (BLACK TIDE)

This enthralling crime thriller is full of action, intrigue and brilliant dialogue. Inspired by the antics of gentleman burglar, Arsène Lupin, Assane Diop plans to carry out a French heist, stealing Marie Antoinette’s necklace from the Louvre Museum in Paris. “Go in as janitors and come out millionaires.” A Netflix original.

Whilst resolving the murder of a child, a detective has to deal with his estranged son who is trying to reconnect with him. An emotional crime thriller that is superbly acted throughout its murderous plot, which is far from straightforward.

PORTRAIT OF A LADY ON FIRE Set in France in the late 1700s, this exquisite historical drama portrays a forbidden love affair between two women, one is an aristocrat and the other is the artist commissioned to produce her portrait for approval by a male suitor. Refusing to be painted, romance, angst and passion follows.

More ladies of flight in this space adventure movie that follows a tough training period by a female astronaut before leaving on her mission. Her career is set to take her a long way from her daughter and emotions are running high. Part English, part French.

DINOTRUX The whole family will enjoy this cute, animated version of Transformers. Dinotrux is half dinosaur, half construction truck and has a lot of fun with members of his crew such as giant Ty Rux and tiny Revvit as they take on the evil D-Structs. A talented but somewhat self-centred dancer has a disastrous audition on Broadway and returns to her country town roots to coach a group of girls. The problem is, they aren’t natural dancers and are entering a huge dance competition. A feel good, family movie with great moves. All ages.

Now in its third season, this animated comedy is from the creative teams behind The Simpsons and Futurama and its quality shines through. Is someone trying to unseat the royal family and how far out of the kingdom of Dreamland will the Princess have to go to find the answers to questions thrown up in the series itself? 13+

BRIDGERTON Who doesn’t love a good romance and this is certainly one of those. True love never does run smooth and it’s no exception in this historical tale of the Bridgerton family and their eight children as they vie for attention, position and the best possible matches in London’s high society. Whether you are celebrating or not, it’s surely time we had a treat. Lobster Thermidor is a lovely way to eat the sweet, succulent and indulgent shellfish and it’s easier than you think. Not forgetting dessert, here’s my interpretation of a Strawberry Frasier, using raspberries.

Succulent lobster and wines with a “crunch” from Emma (chef) and John (sommelier) Gilchrist

34

Lobster Thermidor

(Serves 2) 1 x 750g - 1kg Lobster, cooked 20g Fresh parmesan, grated For the Sauce: 25g Butter 25g Plain flour 1 Shallot, finely chopped 275ml Fish stock 55ml White wine 110ml Crème entière ½ tsp Dijon mustard 2 tbs Chopped parsley ½ Lemon, juice only Salt and freshly ground black pepper Preheat grill to medium heat. Cut the lobster in half and remove the meat from the claws, tail and head.

Discard the thin claws and head content. Rinse the shell and pat dry. Set aside. Chop the meat into pieces and place in a bowl. To make the sauce, place the butter in a pan over a medium heat. Add the shallots and cook until softened. Add the flour and cook it out. Pour in the stock and wine, stirring until fully incorporated. Add the cream and simmer for 5 mins. Add the mustard, herbs, lemon juice and season to taste. Mix the sauce into the lobster meat and then fill the empty shells, sprinkle with Parmesan and grill until golden brown.

For the cake: 90g Lightly salted butter really soft, plus extra for greasing 45g Plain flour 50g Pistachios, plus a few, chopped, for scattering 1 tsp Baking powder 90g Caster sugar 1 Large egg 1 tbs Milk For the filling: 125g Mascarpone cheese 150ml Crème entière ½ tsp Vanilla extract 100g White chocolate, broken into chunks 250g Fresh raspberries Heat oven to 180°C/160°C fan/gas 4. Grease a metal tray and line it with greaseproof paper. Put the pistachios in a food processor and pulse so they break up a little. Add the remaining cake ingredients and blend again into a creamy mixture. Pour onto the tray and spread evenly with a palette knife. Place on the middle shelf

Wines with ‘Crunch’

If you are going to splash out on a treat like lobster then the trick with the wine paring is to let the lobster flavours shine through. Sparkling wines, dry white and light rosés that are unoaked will all work well. Delicate acidity is equally important and not too many fruit flavours. Vins avec croquer, wines with crunch is what is needed. Here are three from around our region.

Chateau de Pouey in Viella, Southern Gers, is where they vinify together two of my favourite grape varieties, Gros Manseng and Petit Manseng, into Pacherenc du Vic-Bihl Sec. Bright, straw colour with a buttery aroma, slightly aromatic and, on the palate, very juicy with a nice punch of acidity.

In Gensac, Gironde, Château Carbonneau produces the wonderfully bubbly and aptly named Life of Carbonneau with 90% Semillon and a splash of Sauvignon. A generous and rounded Comice pear palate with a lemony, crisp green apple acidity. chateau-carbonneau.com 15.20€

smooth with very soft peaks. Stir in the vanilla. Put the chocolate in a small heatproof bowl and place on top of a pan of simmering water. Stir until melted but not hot. Set aside for 5–10 min until cool but still liquid. Pour into the mascarpone and stir, but be careful not to over mix or it will split.

To make the coulis, put half the raspberries in a small blender. Blitz until runny, then pour through a sieve into a bowl to remove the seeds. Cut four circles of pistachio sponge to fit 2 rings. Place one layer of sponge into the greased rings. Cut some of the raspberries in half and place neatly inside the rings.

Flat side against the ring. Spoon half the cheesecake mixture over the base. Scatter the remaining raspberries on top, then cover with the rest of the mixture. Place the remaining sponge disc on top. Cover with cling film and chill for at least 6 hours, or overnight. Run a palette knife around the edge of the tin. Remove the sides and base and sit on a plate. Arrange any remaining raspberries on top of the cheesecake and serve with the sauce. Add cream if you wish!

Revealing the authenticity of the ingredients around which it is built, each dish created by chef Anaïs Teynié at Hôtel de l’Europe in Villeréal brings out the real, fresh flavours. Combining traditional and contemporary style with seasonal produce, she is joined by pastry chef Julien Auroux to provide culinary cuisine that is sure to delight.

Fresh, Flavourful & Colourful Cuisine SCALLOPS WITH CHORIZO, GINGER AND SPINACH (Serves 4)

8 Scallops (Coquille St Jacques) 500g Fresh baby spinach 60g Fresh ginger, peeled 80g Chorizo 1 Garlic clove 3 Shallots A bunch each of blue/purple and red radish 25g Butter (unsalted) 2 tbs Olive oil 1 tbs Grapeseed oil Salt and pepper to taste Wash the baby spinach and pat it dry. Brunoise* the chorizo. Brunoise the ginger and the shallots and mix together. Wash the scallops, pat them dry and place on a tray. Preheat a pan and add the butter and the fresh garlic clove, then the spinach, salt and pepper.

36

Once cooked, put the spinach mix into a blender and blend until you have a smooth paste. Preheat a pan with the olive oil, add the shallots and the ginger mix first. Cook for two mins then add the chorizo and cook for a further three mins. Once cooked place to one side. Preheat a frying pan with the grapeseed oil and sear the scallops. Peel the radishes, cutting them in four on the long side then slice thinly. To plate: Plate as you wish, piping dots or decoratively spreading the spinach paste on the side. *To brunoise first cut the radish into narrow julienne strips, then turn a quarter and dice to produce cubes of around 1 to 2mm in size.

‘An unprecedented culinary foray’

Sift the flour into a large bowl, add the salt, spices, nutmeg, sugar and ginger, and mix together.

and roll each into a ball, evenly spacing them out on the tray. Cover with a damp tea towel and leave in a warm place for a further 30 mins, or until doubled in size. Preheat the oven to 190ºC/Gas 5. In a small bowl, mix the flour and 4tbs water to a thick paste, then transfer to a piping bag. Gently pat down the risen buns and pipe a cross on top. Place in the heated oven for 15 to 20 mins, or until golden brown. Transfer to a wire cooling rack, brush over a little honey to glaze, leave to cool. To serve, slice open the sticky hot cross buns, toast and spread with butter and serve. Hot cross buns are a Good Friday tradition, marking the end of Lent. Quoted in Poor Robin’s Almanac in 1733: “Good Friday comes this month, the old woman runs. With one or two a penny hot cross buns”. Nowadays they are often eaten all year round. In Australia, for instance, they change the cross to a smiley face and call it the Not Cross Bun!

EGGSCEPTIONAL!

“Eggscellent” ideas for “eggstraordinary” eggs this Easter

Perfect for hiding in the garden, these creative, decorative egg ideas are great for all the family. Forget “soldiers” they bring a whole new level of fun to boiled eggs! TRADITIONAL ONION DYE

DYING BOILED EGGS

GO BOTANICAL

SILK TYING

Add the skins from 10 large onions (red or yellow) into 2.5l of water with 200ml vinegar (this helps the dye to “take” to the egg) and 2 tbs salt (to stop the eggs from cracking). Bring to the boil, simmer for 45 mins, set aside to cool. Wash and dry 10 raw eggs, add them to the pan, return to the heat and simmer for 30 mins. Rest for 30 mins and transfer to a plate to dry. l For a plain rather than mottled finish, remove the onion skins before boiling the eggs. l For a deeper colour refrigerate in the liquid overnight. l For a marbled effect, wrap each egg in yellow onion skins, wrap tightly in nylon, secure with an elastic band and boil in a yellow onion dye for 10 mins.

Don’t forget your disposable gloves and ensure the peeled eggs are cool before dying. Coloured food dyes mixed with vinegar and water with a ratio of ½ cup warm water, 1 tbs white vinegar and 10 to 20 drops liquid food colouring) are ideal for a base. Simply place each colour into a separate container then the choice is yours: l Obtain different shades by leaving the eggs in the dye longer. l To add white stripes place elastic bands around the eggs. l Apply a wax crayon design (which will repel the dye) before dipping. l Drizzle different coloured dyes down the sides. l Paint dots, stars, flowers, etc., onto dried dyed eggs using edible paint. l Leave some of the shell on whilst dying, removing it to reveal a pattern.

Have you ever wondered how those wonderful opaque leaf or flower designs are made? Here’s how! Gather your ingredients: a pair of tights/ nylons (cut into squares), flowers, herbs and leaves, white eggs, elastic bands. Use cold water to stick the flower and/or foliage to the egg, wrap in nylon, secure tightly and boil for 10 mins in the dye mix, allow to cool (or refrigerate overnight for a deeper colour). Cut the nylon, remove the foliage and pat try. Rub with a little olive oil for a brilliant shine. If you wish you can also leave the foliage in place.

Old silk ties (or any patterned silk material) are ideal for this technique; the more dense the pattern, the more stunning the effect. Cut the material into squares, large enough to cover the egg. Place a raw, white egg onto the patterned side of the square, wrap the egg and tie the top securely with a rubber band. Make sure the silk is tight and smooth then boil in vinegar, leave to cool and unwrap carefully. Voila, c’est magique!

From our team in the north west tip of Brittany down through south west France to our agents in the south east corner of the Cote d’Azur we were rushed off our feet. This leap in demand from the UK was matched by demand from domestic buyers and property was selling quickly, even during periods of confinement. Luckily we have been offering “virtual viewings” for many years and had thousands of virtual tours

within our listings. Similarly we used electronic signatures to ensure sales continued smoothly - these contracts are simple and easy to use, even for “non techie” buyers. Leggett is not alone, agencies across the country reported a jump in sales. The Axel Springer Group (owner of a portfolio of leading French portals) predicts that overall we will see 918,000 sales across France for 2020, a remarkable number considering the estimated 180,000 sales lost during lockdown.

NEW EXPECTATIONS The general consensus was that this pre-Brexit rush would lead to a huge drop in demand from UK buyers this year - boy was that wrong! We started the year with a sales pipeline that was 51% higher than this time last year. What has happened is that, last year, our typical client was looking to move full time

The Local Buzz • February - April 2021

to France (either to retire or to work from home) and they wanted to get in before the residency rules changed. This year, our typical buyers are looking for a second home that they can enjoy for longer holidays, whilst working from home in a sunnier and more pleasant environment. There has been much talk about second home owners only being allowed to visit for 90 days out of every 180 - but the truth is that three months at a time is more than long enough for most people. I read a report from UBS Global Wealth Management recently that was describing how three quarters of the people they interviewed said that they anticipate a permanent lifestyle shift post Covid. They are looking to reduce the amount of time they spend in the office and, of course, home ownership is central to how this change will be implemented.

We have found that an increasing number of clients (both international and domestic) are looking for property with plenty of outside space and the ability to work from home. This means a separate home office and excellent broadband connection. France has a dedicated broadband plan, called France Tres Haut Debit, within which the Government has committed to providing a minimum 30mb broadband for everyone by 2022 and fiber optic for all by 2025.

BOOM TIMES AHEAD? Expect to see sales of French rural property boom in 2021, prices in cities have soared over the last few years and country house prices have yet to catch up - they offer exceptional value for money. It looks as though Covid has caused a permanent shift in what kind of property people want to live in. www.leggettfrance.com

Marion M: Everyone is saying how wonderful zoom and the like are but, to be honest, I always feel very sad and, quite often, distressed and exhausted afterwards. How can I actually start to enjoy it? Hello Marion You’re so right, it does seem everyone else is delighted with virtual meetings but, in my experience, many

A

are not. Those who don’t like taking phone calls for instance, find zooming even more uncomfortable. On the phone we can hear, and concentrate on, the intonation of the voice because we can’t see all the non-verbal messages, until we appear on screen and then wham, there they are – virtual signals in a virtual world. Very disconcerting.

Zooming, even if it’s just two of you, requires sustained and intense attention to detail and this is made all the more challenging with multi-person screens. What do we do when we want to speak? Interrupt? Put our hand up? Then, unlike a natural conversation, there’s no room in Zoom for a natural silence or pause. Somehow that silence, no matter how short, becomes awkward making both, or all, speak at once. Basically, it is all very concentrated. Camera angles and the type of camera can be very unforgiving too, making you even more self-conscious and adding to the anxiety of all those eyes looking at you.

In short, it is a personal exchange without any real personal connection. It’s just not natural. So how about suggesting shorter video calls, more regularly, with fewer people. Small doses are easier to deal with than longer sessions but you need to be honest about it: “I’m having a couple of days’ break from screentime”, is something most people understand. John G writes: My insurance company won’t pay out after two dogs chased my car. I swerved, going into a ditch, but one of them hit the car. I have damage to the underside and the owner of the dogs refuses to admit fault. So I am faced with a €1200 bill or loss of my insurance bonus. What can I do? Hello John, French law is clear in your case: the owner of the dogs is responsible for the damages they have caused, even if the dogs had escaped. Therefore, Speaking French with must pay the owner friends builds compensation. confidence

A

Resolving claims is now the first step

Not everyone is comfortable zooming

From a practical point of view, the law has changed recently and for any litigation under 5.000€, before any court case, you must have tried to resolve the issue amicably through a conciliator or a mediator. Only if the amicable resolution has failed, will you be allowed to take the matter to court. However, we all know that when you initiate a court procedure for a relatively small amount, you have already tried everything

to resolve the situation amicably yourself. Therefore, in order to circumvent this issue and the delays incurred by this mediation which can take months to organise, if you find a conciliator or mediator who is not too overworked already, the only option is to increase your demands which means, for the owner of the dog, that it is no longer a 1200€ bill he is facing but more than 5000€. All the more reason for him to admit fault.

UNDERSTANDING THE RULES UK Pensions and Investments in a post BREXIT world After several years of uncertainty, the UK has now fully left the EU and whilst many of us understand exactly what that means in terms of French residency requirements, the impact on the financial services world is only just starting to unfold.

WHAT NOW? We asked Andrea Glover, International Financial Adviser at The Spectrum IFA Group, for her thoughts on the matter and to provide guidance to those of us who are affected. Andrea explained “Brexit ended automatic ‘passporting’ rights for UK financial services in the EU. So, if you either live in France or are looking to move to France, it is important to check, if you have a UK financial adviser and/or UK insurer, that they can still support you. “For those of you living in France”, she added, “contact your UK financial adviser, if they have not already been

in touch, and ask if they are still able to provide financial advice to you as a French resident. Also, ask your UK insurer if they have put in place measures to ensure that your policy or pension can continue to be serviced. Your insurer or financial adviser should always act in your best interests. It is also important to note that in the case of a dispute with your insurer or financial adviser that you might not be able to refer the problem to an ombudsman or court in France.”

GUIDANCE IS KEY Andrea continued “My advice would always be to seek guidance on the rules, from a French tax perspective, for any pensions and investments held in the UK and check that anyone offering you advice, or financial services, is authorised to do so in France. Further, a suitably qualified financial adviser who is based in France will

The The Local Local Buzz Buzz •• February February -- April April 2021 2021

undoubtedly have first-hand experience of living in France and, therefore, have greater empathy with their clients.” She went on to say “Giving advice on UK held investments and pensions is only one component of comprehensive financial planning. A qualified financial adviser will also be able to provide guidance on matters such as Inheritance Tax planning in France and look at alternative tax efficient investment vehicles such as an Assurance Vie.”

MOVING TO FRANCE? For those looking to move to France Andrea explained further “Moving to France as a UK citizen is obviously more onerous than previously in terms of residency. I believe this places even greater importance on seeking suitable financial advice before any firm plans to move are finalised.” From her own experience, Andrea commented “We are receiving a number

of enquiries from people looking to move to France, which is firstly encouraging but secondly it means that we can really help clients to structure their financial affairs efficiently before they move. We quite often work in partnership with international tax lawyers to assist clients who, for example, have a business in the UK but want to run it from France. Having a clear and defined plan, after seeking advice from the suitable experts prior to any move to France, is undoubtedly beneficial and avoids any nasty surprises further down the line.” www.spectrum-ifa.com/ financial-advisor-france/ andrea-glover/

WELL BEING

Naturopathy

explained

Keeping well from the inside out Margaux Beyries is a Praticienne de Santé Naturopathe offering support and advice on medicinal plants, essential oils, diet, well-being and stress management. Here she explains how naturopathy uses nature’s gifts to help keep us healthy.

THE BENEFITS

Naturopathy can help with a wide range of ailments from allergies and chronic pain through to diabetes, cholesterol issues and digestive problems. Equally, it can aid people who are often tired or sick, have sleep problems, are suffering with acne or eczema, are stressed or going through difficult times, or even those who are planning to have a baby!

46

In addition, if you are healthy it’s also a great way to stay that way.

WHAT IS NATUROPATHY? The World Health Organization considers Naturopathy to be a traditional medicine like Indian Ayurvéda and Traditional Chinese medicine. It is not a so-called “soft” medicine but, instead, is an alternative or complementary medicine to conventional medicine, offering guidance and precious advice for the body as well as the mind. Translated as “nature’s path”, it uses what nature can provide to stay healthy, knowing that everything is connected and interconnected: soul, body, spirit. It is a natural medicine which evolves, which adapts to each person, and which is well anchored in the past, but also in the future to better preserve our planet!

Your Naturopath, also known as “health educator “, will focus on the causes of your illness or ailment, as opposed to the symptoms. It’s a traditional medicine of “good sense”. Everyone is unique and has specific needs according to age, personal history, health and lifestyle. It is important that your Naturopath takes your individuality into account to give the best advice for optimal health. The realities of our consumer society with its fast food, smoking, sedentary lifestyle, stress and lack of connection with nature, do little to promote healthy lifestyles. The objective is to ensure that the individual becomes the main promoter of his/her own health as a result of easy-to-use tips and advice aimed at prevention, and which are complementary to conventional treatments.

WELL BEING

METHODOLOGY Food: This is very important to keep the body in shape, preferably eating fresh food, seasonal fruits and vegetables, and local produce. A diversified diet, without excess and without deficiencies, allows us to obtain, without too much effort, a better well-being. l Herbal medicines and aromatherapy: The study of plants and essential oils brings real power in terms of knowing the benefits of plants. It’s a chance to be able to heal ourselves with nature. l Physical activity: Exercise such as yoga, hiking, swimming and riding, etc., is very important too. Have at least 20min/per day of physical activity, adapted to suit your life and your habits. l Emotions: After the physical, the psyche. This is essential because, even if your diet is healthy, nothing will “work” if you are anxious or have bad feelings. Body and soul work together. This is where the quote “Mens sana in corpore sano” (a healthy mind in a healthy body) comes into its own! l

FOOD FOR THOUGHT Hippocrates, said to be the “father” of medicine, wrote “let your food be your first medicine”. Food must be enjoyable, both during preparation and whilst eating. Here are some suggestions: l Choose “live” foods, i.e. fresh,

seasonal fruits and vegetables from local producers. l Use first cold press organic oils for cooking or seasoning. l Steam or cook at low-temperatures. l Drink 1.5L water a day, alternating between spring and tap water. l Avoid eating processed foods. l Choose quality meat, buying from a local butcher/producer. l Avoid white sugar and use whole sugar such as rapadura cane sugar. These five medicinal plants can be useful to have at home: SAGE is Salvare in Latin and means “that saves”. Sage can be helpful in relieving inflammation of the ear, nose and throat, as well as angina, mouth ulcer and herpes labialis. ROSEMARY aids the digestive system, relieves pain, and acts as a detoxifier for the liver. DANDELION has been indicated in detoxification, cleansing the liver and the kidneys. STINGING NETTLES are rich in minerals, vitamins and amino acids. Their leaves have a re-mineralising action, as well as a high iron content. Used as a diuretic and laxative in ancient Greece. VALERIAN contains a valerenic acid which has a sedative effect on the central nervous system. It calms and helps to promote sleep. www.eira-naturopathie.fr

The Local Buzz • February - April 2021

IMPORTANT: Not all of these plants and herbs are suitable for use by everyone. Check with your doctor before making changes to your diet or before adapting your health regime, especially if you already take medication or have health problems. Dandelion, for instance, should not be eaten if you are pregnant, can cause allergic reactions in some people and can slow blood clotting, whilst Valerian can interact with certain medications.

TAKING TO THE ROAD AGAIN

Jase offers guidance on keeping ourselves and our bikes in good shape. Jase Alexander, Experienced club cyclist So here we are speeding into spring in what seems like a completely different world. These really are tumultuous times we are living through and some days it’s very hard to stay upbeat. We all have off days or weeks, but it’s important to try and stay positive, not just for family and friends around us, but also for ourselves. Exercise is just one way to look after our health and mental wellbeing, and with so many areas of fitness being so badly affected, such as gyms being closed and large exercise classes being restricted, cycling is a great way to keep ourselves fit and motivated.

For those of us who already cycle, we have been very lucky to be able to continue for most of the last year, even with restrictions on distance and the size of group we could ride with. It’s been my small piece of normality and has kept me motivated to stay fit and healthy. Cycling has seen a huge surge in popularity during the pandemic, with many people buying new bikes or just dusting off the old one that’s been sitting around for a while. So if you are new to cycling, or just starting out again after taking some time out, here are a few things to consider to help you on your way.

BEFORE SETTING OUT

If you are in the “there’s nothing wrong with my old bike category” and you’re not too confident with

fully maintaining your own bike, it’s a very good idea to have it checked over by your local bike shop. Listed as essential, bike shops have been open during lockdown restrictions but it’s worthwhile checking opening times before making the trip. I know my local bike shop prefers to make an appointment so the bike can be dropped off and picked up safely. If you have a new bike or are considering buying one, the shop should make sure it’s the right size and comfortable for you. This is essential, no matter what kind of cycling you intend to do whether it be on the road or hitting the trails, it can prevent any unnecessary injuries. In any event, you should always carry out a quick check of major parts before taking to the road.

THE RIGHT KIT Clothing is also an important factor. A well-fitting helmet, a pair of gloves and some high visibility clothing will keep you safe and help your confidence. As you start to spend more time on your bike a nice pair of padded shorts will be your new best friend. Bear in mind these are a different fit for men and women and do vary in price, and try to look for a nice thick pad, you’ll thank me later! Being caught out in bad weather without a good rain jacket can be soul destroying, especially if you are a long way from home. You can buy rain jackets that fold and pack neatly into your pocket. Once you are ready to head out check what your local pandemic restrictions

BASIC MAINTENANCE

are and always remember to keep a mask with you. On one ride last summer I had run out of water and couldn’t stop anywhere as I had forgotten my mask. Saying that, make sure you have plenty of fluids, food and a few emergency euros just in case.

TAKE IT EASY If you haven’t done any exercise or cycling for a while, try to take it easy and not overdo it on your first few rides. Build up your time and

distance gradually to avoid injury and when you return home relax, rehydrate and slowly stretch your muscles. You will find some very good tips on stretching on YouTube. The most important thing is to enjoy your cycling, don’t put yourself under any pressure in terms of distances or speeds as these, along with your fitness, will improve naturally the more you do. Hopefully as the year progresses we will all be able to ride with friends again for coffee and cake stops, because these truly are the best kind of rides. So good luck in your new adventures, maybe I will see you out on the road, stay safe and enjoy!

These tips are aimed at a pre-ride inspection on a daily, weekly or monthly basis depending on how often you ride. Nothing can replace the safety and peace of mind that comes with regular checks by a trained mechanic who will ensure that hard-to-evaluate, complex components such as derailleurs, spokes and cables are inspected. • Check that the brakes are working (left, right and then together). • Tighten any loose nuts and bolts (not too tight). For bikes made from carbon, the tightening specs should be written on the frame. • Check that the spokes are in place and not loose. • Are the tyres inflated correctly? The pressures can be found on the tyre side wall. • Check tyres for glass, stones and cracks etc., and carry your patch kit and pump with you. • Is the saddle secure and at the correct position for you? Your saddle should be level which will stop any extra pressure on the arms and shoulders on long rides. Use a small spirit level to check. • Are all the moving parts moving freely and quick-release components functioning as they should? • Are the cables correctly positioned and not causing obstruction? • Check that the reflectors are still in place. • Do the wheels spin freely and straight? • Lubrication is key to keeping your bike moving safely and can also extend the life of parts such as the chain, cables, mechanics and certain types of clip-in pedals. Lubricate when the bike is dry and make sure you avoid placing oil on the brakes and braking surfaces, wheel rims or discs. Understanding the anatomy of your bike and how to lubricate essential parts will really help and, again, you can find many support documents online. For instance a series of cycling guides, in English, can be found at cyclinguk.org which also includes a useful diagram explaining the structure of the bike.

Jase has written several features on cycling which can all be found in the sports section of our website articles pages. www. thelocalbuzzmag.com/articles/

Perry’s work captures the essence of our part of France, reflecting his affections for the people, culture, traditions and, of course, our cuisine. Adopted by the locals where he lives in Gascony as the “Anglo-Gascon”, Perry combines humanity with humour to portray life in the slow lanes of rural France. With a portfolio that includes books, greeting cards, prints and limited editions, he has kindly offered one of his fabulous signed canvases, such as this “Coq Au Vin” version, for our prize competition. Sure to bring a smile every day, his much-loved creations centre around Perry’s slightly irreverent sense of humour yet, at the same time, depict a knowledge and fondness that stems from years of observation and inclusion in the French way of life. French Spring Cleaning by the editor F

or this issue, with the cleaning feature in mind, I dug out my husband’s (yes you read that right) old copy of Mrs Beeton’s infamous guide and have to say I felt pretty ashamed of myself. I don’t think I had read it in years and what a stack of good info it contains! For instance, this tip on removing wine stains is particularly handy given we are surrounded by vineyards in our region. If we’re careless enough to spill it, Mrs Beeton suggests stretching the stain over a bowl, holding it in place with an elastic band then sprinkling salt over it, then boiling water and, finally, washing it well. Our first major fête in France was a bit of a boozy affair with one guest, dressed in white, spilling red wine over herself. Someone said,

“white wine will sort that out” so she did no more than pour white wine on the offending spillage, then someone added, “no it’s salt you need”, so she grabbed the salt mill and repeated the exercise. The next day her clothes were in the wash and came out perfectly clean! Don’t sue me if it doesn’t work for you! Back to spring cleaning and, with 17 years’ experience here in France, I’ve found that there are marked differences. For instance, have you ever heard a buzzing that sounds like it’s coming from inside the wall? Take a peek behind your picture frames and you’ll probably find a housing estate of oblong, shelllike structures. These are the previous homes or are currently occupied by a

black, strange looking flying insect with a long tail that looks like a miniature version is attached. At first I thought it was mating but then realised it had only just hatched! Try as I might I can’t find the name of it so do let me know if you can identify the little charmer. They also like nice warm places like the folds of curtains or outdoor umbrellas where they will form an orderly line. Then there are the daddy longlegs whose webs are so fine that you don’t really see them until the sun shines and then it’s like “baby” Spiderman’s been and had a practice all around the windows and behind the curtains. Higher up in the highest part of my cathedral ceiling are the spider’s webs, the “big boy” version! Rather than bring in the extending

ladders and risk my neck, not to mention the ornaments on the way down, I’ve devised a cunning web catcher in the form of three broom handles, “gaffa-taped” together onto a feather duster. It can be a bit wobbly and unpredictable but eventually the cobwebs are swept away, together with all the dust that had accumulated out of sight on top of the beams. Mrs B would be proud! Apart from looking for the odd mouse, there’s the regular “sweep”, in every sense of the word, for those gorgeous, tiny tree frogs and lizards that just can’t resist a walk around your house and a sleep under your furniture. I just leave a door open, they usually make their own way out, even if they do come back next day. C’est la vie! Until next time …
