Welcome A very warm welcome to the October 2018 edition of the Rayleigh Local Business Guide. If your budget is tight then you can still take the family out for a great time without it costing you a penny. We have some fantastic ideas for great Free Days Out in Essex (page 6). Our feature includes visits to Hadleigh Castle, Maldon Promenade Park, Danbury Lakes and Leighon-Sea beach. In our regular ‘What’s On in Rayleigh’ on page 16 we focus on some very local events. We feature a Tea Dance at Rayleigh Mill, an evening of Line Dancing at the British Legion and a fun Bingo Night also at the British Legion. Unfortunately successful re-homing of dogs from Acres Way (pages 10 and 11) has been very slow over the summer period. This is fairly normal as everyone is away on their holidays. None of the 3 dogs we featured last time have found suitable homes as yet, but it was expected that these dogs would be difficult to home. We are therefore featuring these 3 dogs again this month to help them get a loving home. We have also added another dog, Merlin a Podenco Canario cross who needs a good home. Within our Community section this month we focus in on the Keep Safe Scheme (page 19), a charity working in partnership with Local Authorities, Community Organisations, businesses and retailers across the county to provide a network of high street venues for vulnerable people to access. We also have a feature article on local charity ‘SCAFT’ - Supporting Carers and Families Together (page 22) and an article featuring some Top Money Saving Tips (page 24). We also have our regular column from our financial expert Martin Lamb from Joseph R Lamb Financial Advisers (centre pages).

Free Days Out In Essex Hadleigh Castle is open all year and is free to visit! After many years and the effects of land subsidence, the castle has been left in ruins, but two towers constructed in the era of Edward III still remain. It is a historic place to visit which overlooks the Essex marshes and Thames estuary- a great day out for a picnic or time to spend with the family!
Maldon Promenade Park is completely free with loads of fun stuff to do for both adults and children so is perfect for families! There are many take away kiosks, a scenic lake, sand pits, a splash water park, a children’s’ playground, wildlife area, grass recreation areas and much more to enjoy and experience!
Danbury Lakes is set within the grounds of Danbury Place. It has walking routes that take you around the beautiful waters of the lakes. Again, it is perfect for peaceful picnics where there are benches overlooking the tranquil lakes and in the spring and summer you can view the spectacular flower displays! Throughout the year there are also various children and family activities to enjoy.
Leigh-on-Sea Beach has been voted in the top 100 British Beaches, it is a lovely sandy beach which stretches on for seven miles from Leigh to Shoeburyness! It’s excellent for swimming, sailing and even windsurfing- the best part is it’s a free fun day out!

Can you help Re-Home a Dog from Acres Way Kennels? Adopting a Dog If you think you can offer a dog a good home, the firs thing you need to do is to go down to the kennels, select a suitable dog you like, take it for a walk and see how you get on. Some people and dogs just don’t get along, so before reserving a dog, the Acres Way staff would need to see if you suit each other. If you have children, or another dog, they recommend that you bring them with you, to make sure that everyone will get on. Once you have visited the dogs, and hopefully found one that matches your lifestyle and expectations, a member of staff will arrange a convenient time for a home check. These are usually carried out within 2 or 3 days of your visit and take about half an hour. Once the home check is complete, you’ll be able to collect your dog. You will need to bring with you
some identifiction showing your current address, and the £130 adoption fee. Their staff will be on hand if you have any questions, and will be able to guide you through the adoption process. All the staff and dogs at Acres Way look forward to seeing you.
Re-Homing Update Unfortunately re-homing has been very slow over the summer period. This is fairly normal as everyone is away on their holidays. None of the 3 dogs we featured last time have found suitable homes as yet, but it was expected that these dogs would be difficult to home. We are therefore featuring these 3 dogs again this month to help them get a loving home. We have also added another dog, Merlin the Podenco Canario cross.
This Month’s Featured Dogs
Bear -
Rottweiler Cross Aged 4 years
Loves : His food. Looking for : Bear is a lovely lad and a gentle giant. He can be very nervous of new people but once he knows you he becomes your best friend. He wouldn’t be suitable with children and would need to meet other animals within the household if he needed to live with other pets 10

Daisy -
Staffie
Aged 7 years Loves : Lots of fuss and attention . Looking for : Daisy is a lovely little Staffie who is looking for a quiet life and comfy home. She is ok with children but due to not getting on with other dogs we would not have here with small children. She also may suffer with a little separation anxiety.
Arnold -
Shar Pei Aged 2 years
Loves : Lots of attention and his food. Looking for : Arnold is quite a quiet lad who enjoys his food and a good walk. He has tested well with other dogs but would recommend he meets any other pets in the home. He would not be suited to a home with small children as he can be quite lively at times.
Merlin - Podenco Canario cross Aged 7 years Loves : Lots of fuss and long walks. Looking for : Looking for : Merlin is a lovely lad that loves lots of one to one time. He reacts well to other dogs but we don’t know if he would be ok to live with another dog. He wouldn’t be able to be left for long periods of time.

Money Guidance I have written several articles about Pensions following the dramatic changes Pensions Freedoms have made. To recap personal pensions are now much more simple, and very flexible long-term savings accounts. The only limitation for most is that they can’t currently be accessed until age 55, but if you could access it earlier you might end up with no pension! Tax relief is given on contributions at your marginal rate of tax, for high earners this is simply too attractive to miss, and for basic rate tax payers there are still long-term advantages. Pension funds accumulate free of capital gains or income tax, 25% of the total fund can be accessed tax free, the balance is taxed as income when you draw it, but most should be earning less in retirement so the income tax due on it should be less than the tax reliefs given. In addition, pensions are normally free of inheritance tax. If you run your own business and your business pays your pension contribution this is normally all set off against corporation tax as well, so you can extract money from your business into your own pension account free of corporation tax, income tax and national insurance. If you are happy to tie the money up to age 55 it really is a ’no brainer’ mathematically. Remember that after 55 (57 after 2028) you can access as much of your pension as you wish and when you wish. You can use the 25% tax free part as ‘income’ and draw it down without any tax until it is exhausted, and you could draw up to your income tax allowance from the taxed part of the pension, if you don’t exceed the allowance this will also be free of income tax. Pensions now really are just too good to miss out on, especially if you are a higher rate or additional rate tax payer. There is some confusion in the savings market however, as a Lifetime ISA broadly replicates a pension for basic rate tax payers. There is no tax relief on contributions, but the entire fund can be withdrawn without income tax and you can access them earlier than a pension. They are subject to certain limitations, but they do make sense as a form of long term savings. However, things may be about to change. The Government are looking to raise more money and are unlikely to want to borrow further. As economic growth is somewhat slow at the moment it is almost certain they will raise it from taxation but will want to limit direct 14
tax increases so tax preferred savings may well be in for a change. In fact, the Treasury Committee have very recently suggested simplifying the savings market by scrapping Lifetime ISA’s and limiting the attractiveness of personal pensions as they spend £billions on tax reliefs, mainly for higher earners. At the moment you can pay up to £40,000 a year into your pension if all your earnings total less than £150,000 per year and get tax relief at your marginal rates. The Treasury Committee are also proposing to reduce the £40,000 and to have a flat rate of income tax relief, (maybe 25%?). This will be fairer to lower earners as they will have an increase in tax relief and should encourage more to save, yet 25% tax relief is still attractive enough for higher earners to want to continue saving for later life, albeit with less available allowance if the £40,000 is reduced. Currently if you have not used your full pension allowance you can claim it back for three previous years, so potentially you could pay £160,000 in this year if you have made no pension funding. This facility could also be reined in by either limiting the years or limiting the carry forward amount to whatever the new reduced annual limit may become. Or by scrapping it all together! These proposal, or similar have been kicked around for some while now and look increasingly likely, as they are getting more support within the Government. So if you have any spare cash to invest to age 55, especially if you run your own business and are sitting on more cash than you need to trade and are limiting your drawings to reduce income tax, now may be an opportunity to extract money from your business more tax efficiently than any other method. Don’t wait until the Autumn statement if this is the case, seek advice or this massive tax saving opportunity may well be lost.

Top Money Saving Tips Stop buying big brands! Most shops own brand items are made by the same people, just packaged differently and priced better. So why pay for the privilege of eating well known branded foods when an own brand tastes the same!
Watch the pennies! If you keep a record of every single penny you spend for at least one month; you’ll learn a lot and then later save the money you realized you wasted!
Haggling! You’d be surprised at the number of places you can haggle prices. From furniture stores to car dealerships to your local electrical store, by being friendly and just by asking you can get the price down on almost anything. If you don’t ask – you don’t get!
Switch off the plugs! A standard CRT television set still uses 2 watts of power on standby, with LCD and plasma screens using even more. According to the Energy Saving Trust, switching stuff off instead of leaving it on standby saves the average household at least £37 a year; it’s also helping out the environment!
Shop at cheaper places! Instead of buying higher priced products in premium supermarkets, make a visit to the less fashionable supermarkets. Your shopping experience might be a little lacklustre but it’ll be worth it when you see how much less you’re paying at the checkout. Stay organized! Computers are used by companies to save money. If you have a computer or laptop at home, use it in the same way. Use a spreadsheet to help with your budgeting. Keep your bank balance on it this will help you to stay organized and you can also use it so that you do not forget important dates. Interest! There is no such thing as 0% interest. When you see that advertised, it simply means that the cost of the interest is in the purchase price. If you are in a position to pay cash, then ask for this money back. The salesman may give you some trouble, but ask to speak to the manager, who may well cut the price to you for cash.
24
Walk! One of the biggest money saving tips: walk don’t drive. If you need to get a paper at the shops, go on foot. It might not be practical if you’re off to do the weekly shop but by not driving your helping the environment by cutting carbon emissions, saving money and losing weight by walking everywhere! Layers in the winter! When it gets cold put on an extra layer instead of turning up the thermostat. There’s no point having the house heated and wasting money on electricity bills when putting on a cosy knitted sweater will do the job just as well! Online comparison sites! It might be annoying and feel like a waste of time, but checking the price of your household services, credit cards and loans with comparison sites like moneysupermarket.com could save you a lot of money; just take some time out to get organised!
