Welcome A warm welcome to the October 2018 edition of the Castle Point Local Business Guide. The Summer holidays are now over but why not still travel out and show the kids that learning can also be fun. Our article on page 6 ‘Educational Visits in Essex’ gives you some great ideas of educational days out for all ages and all interests. In our regular ‘What’s On in Castle Point’ on pages 16 and 17 we feature a Local History Day, Electric Blanket Safety Testing by Castle Point Council, a Night at the Movies, a Concert by the Southend Symphony Orchestra, an all female singing group – Chanteuses and a coffee morning. Plenty for everyone to enjoy! Unfortunately successful re-homing of dogs from Acres Way (pages 10 and 11) has been very slow over the summer period. This is fairly normal as everyone is away on their holidays. None of the 3 dogs we featured last time have found suitable homes as yet, but it was expected that these dogs would be difficult to home. We are therefore featuring these 3 dogs again this month to help them get a loving home. We have also added another dog, Merlin a Podenco Canario cross who needs a good home. Within our Community section this month we focus in on the Keep Safe Scheme (page 8), a charity working in partnership with Local Authorities, Community Organisations, businesses and retailers across the county to provide a network of high street venues for vulnerable people to access. We also have a feature about the history of St James the Less Church in Hadleigh (page 18), and the history of the Canvey Island Transport Museum and their ‘Big Wheels 2018 Show’ which is taking place on Sunday 14th October (pages 21 and 22). Our regular financial expert Martin Lamb from Joseph R Lamb Financial Advisers provides his regular contribution (centre pages). If you want to feature any local charities or community based scheme, local sports clubs or other local activities in our Castle Point or Rayleigh guides then please get in touch at: info@ thelocalbusinessguide.co.uk If you are a local business and would like to advertise in the Guide, then please contact our salesperson Ricky on 01375 402546 who will give you a no obligation quote. It really is a cost effective way of promoting your business and generating business from your local community.

Castle Point Association of Voluntary Services (CAVS) Would you or someone you know benefit from the Keep Safe Scheme?

K

eep Safe is a charity working in partnership with Local Authorities, Community Organisations, businesses and retailers across the county to provide a network of high street venues for vulnerable people to access. Keep Safe aims to help vulnerable people in Essex feel safer and more confident when they are out and about in the county’s town centres. The scheme offers a free Keep Safe pack to vulnerable people. The pack provides a small Keep Safe card and/or keyring tag for someone to insert details of their preferred emergency telephone contact numbers. A number of shops, businesses and libraries in the Rochford and Rayleigh District and Castle Point Borough participate in the scheme and clearly display the Keep Safe logo in their window. If someone experiences difficulty, harassment, or is in trouble or distress when they are out, they can look for a nearby Keep Safe venue, show them their Keep Safe card/ keyring tag and ask the venue to make a call for help to the contact number on the card or keyring tag. 8

A list of venues in Essex can be found on the Keep Safe website: www.keepsafeessex.org.uk For more information, or to request a Keep Safe pack, please contact: Email: info@keepsafeessex.org.uk Tel: 01702 546 366 or 01268 772 796 – Keep Safe in Rochford & Rayleigh District Tel: 01268 882461 – Keep Safe in Castle Point

Working for the Community

Can you help Re-Home a Dog from Acres Way Kennels? Adopting a Dog If you think you can offer a dog a good home, the firs thing you need to do is to go down to the kennels, select a suitable dog you like, take it for a walk and see how you get on. Some people and dogs just don’t get along, so before reserving a dog, the Acres Way staff would need to see if you suit each other. If you have children, or another dog, they recommend that you bring them with you, to make sure that everyone will get on. Once you have visited the dogs, and hopefully found one that matches your lifestyle and expectations, a member of staff will arrange a convenient time for a home check. These are usually carried out within 2 or 3 days of your visit and take about half an hour. Once the home check is complete, you’ll be able to collect your dog. You will need to bring with you

some identifiction showing your current address, and the £130 adoption fee. Their staff will be on hand if you have any questions, and will be able to guide you through the adoption process. All the staff and dogs at Acres Way look forward to seeing you.

Re-Homing Update Unfortunately re-homing has been very slow over the summer period. This is fairly normal as everyone is away on their holidays. None of the 3 dogs we featured last time have found suitable homes as yet, but it was expected that these dogs would be difficult to home. This Month’s Featured Dogs

Loves : Lots of attention and his food. Looking for : Arnold is quite a quiet lad who enjoys his food and a good walk. Merlin - Podenco Canario cross Aged 7 years Loves : Lots of fuss and long walks. Looking for : Looking for : Merlin is a lovely lad that loves lots of one to one time. He reacts well to other dogs but we don’t know if he would be ok to live with another dog. He wouldn’t be able to be left for long periods of time.

Money Guidance I have written several articles about Pensions following the dramatic changes Pensions Freedoms have made. To recap personal pensions are now much more simple, and very flexible long-term savings accounts. The only limitation for most is that they can’t currently be accessed until age 55, but if you could access it earlier you might end up with no pension! Tax relief is given on contributions at your marginal rate of tax, for high earners this is simply too attractive to miss, and for basic rate tax payers there are still long-term advantages. Pension funds accumulate free of capital gains or income tax, 25% of the total fund can be accessed tax free, the balance is taxed as income when you draw it, but most should be earning less in retirement so the income tax due on it should be less than the tax reliefs given. In addition, pensions are normally free of inheritance tax. If you run your own business and your business pays your pension contribution this is normally all set off against corporation tax as well, so you can extract money from your business into your own pension account free of corporation tax, income tax and national insurance. If you are happy to tie the money up to age 55 it really is a ’no brainer’ mathematically. Remember that after 55 (57 after 2028) you can access as much of your pension as you wish and when you wish. You can use the 25% tax free part as ‘income’ and draw it down without any tax until it is exhausted, and you could draw up to your income tax allowance from the taxed part of the pension, if you don’t exceed the allowance this will also be free of income tax. Pensions now really are just too good to miss out on, especially if you are a higher rate or additional rate tax payer. There is some confusion in the savings market however, as a Lifetime ISA broadly replicates a pension for basic rate tax payers. There is no tax relief on contributions, but the entire fund can be withdrawn without income tax and you can access them earlier than a pension. They are subject to certain limitations, but they do make sense as a form of long term savings. However, things may be about to change. The Government are looking to raise more money and are unlikely to want to borrow further. As economic growth is somewhat slow at the moment it is almost certain they will raise it from taxation but will want to limit 14

direct tax increases so tax preferred savings may well be in for a change. In fact, the Treasury Committee have very recently suggested simplifying the savings market by scrapping Lifetime ISA’s and limiting the attractiveness of personal pensions as they spend £billions on tax reliefs, mainly for higher earners. At the moment you can pay up to £40,000 a year into your pension if all your earnings total less than £150,000 per year and get tax relief at your marginal rates. The Treasury Committee are also proposing to reduce the £40,000 and to have a flat rate of income tax relief, (maybe 25%?). This will be fairer to lower earners as they will have an increase in tax relief and should encourage more to save, yet 25% tax relief is still attractive enough for higher earners to want to continue saving for later life, albeit with less available allowance if the £40,000 is reduced. Currently if you have not used your full pension allowance you can claim it back for three previous years, so potentially you could pay £160,000 in this year if you have made no pension funding. This facility could also be reined in by either limiting the years or limiting the carry forward amount to whatever the new reduced annual limit may become. Or by scrapping it all together! These proposal, or similar have been kicked around for some while now and look increasingly likely, as they are getting more support within the Government. So if you have any spare cash to invest to age 55, especially if you run your own business and are sitting on more cash than you need to trade and are limiting your drawings to reduce income tax, now may be an opportunity to extract money from your business more tax efficiently than any other method. Don’t wait until the Autumn statement if this is the case, seek advice or this massive tax saving opportunity may well be lost.

History of Castle Point

St James The Less - Hadleigh

T

he parish church of St James The Less has been the spiritual and geographical centre of Hadleigh since approximately 1140. You may be surprised to learn that the church building is actually older than Hadleigh Castle by some 100 years or so! The church, built in a semi-circle shape at the East side is very typical of Norman design and it has remained pretty much unaltered over the last 800 years. This has been mainly due to the fact that until the start of this century, the population of the village remained small so there was no real need to make the building any bigger.

Defence against attack The way the church was constructed, with thick walls and narrow windows suggests that in Norman times, it was built not only as a place of

18

worship but also as a means of defence against coastal attacks. Don’t forget, the church was built well before the castle in the second half of the 12th century. Some alterations have been made over the years such as the renovation or addition of some of the nave windows between the 13th and 15th century. The porch and belfry were also added later. Major restoration work was also carried out in 1949 following extensive damage caused by enemy attacks during the Second World War. On the whole though, the church remains largely unchanged and remains one of the best examples of this type of Norman architecture in the country.

Discovery Inside the church, several items of note can be seen. Back in the 1850’s, some plaster was removed from the inside walls and a number of wall paintings were discovered behind. The pictures included Jacobean texts, the Lord’s Prayer and the Ten Commandments, St George and the dragon, some angels and a picture of St. Thomas of Canterbury. Unfortunately, once exposed to the open air most of the work did not survive apart from an angel and the picture of St Thomas. Other items of interest inside the church include the Royal Arms of Queen Anne, some 19th century stained glass windows and the font which has been altered over the years but still shows evidence of its Norman origins.

Castle Point Transport Museum E

very year, Castle Point Transport Museum opens its doors to welcome visitors to view the extensive range of period vehicles it houses. The grounds of Leigh Beck School next door are transformed into one of the largest transport shows in the area. Housed in the historic former Canvey & District bus Depot built in 1934 and vacated by Eastern National in 1978, the Castle Point Transport Museum is home to over thirty old and rare buses and coaches alongside vintage commercials, military and emergency vehicles. The display boasts a heritage ranging from the 1940s to the 1990s and in addition to the classic vehicles has a wide range of transport memorabilia and costumes on display.

On the departure of Eastern National, the premises were acquired by the Eastern National Preservation Group as a home for their expanding collection and led to the formation of the Museum in1979. Whilst the locally based theme of the ENPG still predominates, the collection now includes examples from across the country.

In addition to the collection of vehicles, the Museum boasts a wide selection of ticket machines, tickets, posters, photographs and uniforms providing plenty for the visitors to enjoy. Also on display is a large scale model railway layout, donated to the Museum by Shoeburyness Model Railway Club. The original canteen is still used today by the volunteers at the museum. The working pits and service tools are still used today for maintaining the vehicles in the Museum. The Museum, one of the oldest commercial buildings on the island, is run entirely by volunteers. Open Day The annual Open Day and Transport Show is a great family day out. Not only will you have the opportunity to see all the museum exhibits but there will also be a huge variety of classic cars on display as well as military and commercial vehicles, Emergency Services vehicles and Motor Cycles. Full details of the Open Day can be found on the following page. www.thelocalbusinessguide.co.uk
