Hello and welcome to the Livingston Theatre Company’s first main stage production of our 25th Season, The Hunchback of Notre Dame! The Livingston Theatre Company 2022-2023 Executive Board would like to thank every member of this production for their continued hard work and dedication throughout the process of this show. The Hunchbck of Notre Dame is a technically and emotionally challenging musical, and we would like to recognize the commitment of the production staff and cast to representing this story thoughtfully.
The Hunchback of Notre Dame is the perfect opening to our 25th season, in which we will reflect on and embrace being different. With the structure of our society today, it is easy to fall into the trap of trying to fit in, but we would like to represent the goal of standing out. Each of our productions this season reinforces the idea that what makes us different is what makes us special. In this show, Quasimodo faces adversity based on his outside appearance, but as we get to know all the characters, The Hunchback of Notre Dame presents the question of whether beauty is really a matter of looks or the quality of your character. We are quick to judge a book by its cover, but we would like to challenge each person to search below the surface and see the value of our individual differences.
Although our season is just beginning, we would like to take a chance to reflect on our accomplishments thus far, including co-producing “Same Changes: A Musical Revue” with Cabaret Theatre, holding several audition workshops for new and existing members, participating in Rutgers 14th annual Homecoming Bed Races, hosting a blood drive with New York Blood Center, and much more.
This incredible show and our upcoming season would be impossible without the support and guidance of Susan Romano, Jason Goldstein, the LTC’s Faculty Board, and the event team at The Livingston Student Center. We deeply appreciate your assistance and commitment to this company. We would also like to give a special thank you to each and every one of you for coming to see this beautiful production and providing support to the LTC and Rutgers student theatre. It is only with your help that the LTC continues to grow and thrive here at Rutgers.
We sincerely thank you for joining us for The Hunchback of Notre Dame.
The 2022-2023 Executive Board
Annie Maclin, Kira Harris, John Baker, and Sagar Singal
The Hunchback of Notre Dame opens with a question: “what makes a monster and what makes a man?” The world of this story is full of extreme challenges, ones that are unfortunately not unfamiliar to us today - war, discrimination, oppression, violence, and more. And yet the extraordinary characters who populate the world of Hunchback respond to these challenges in extraordinary ways: finding the beauty in the fractured world around them, standing up for the outcasts, and believing in a better future in the face of extreme adversity. These characters demonstrate over and over again that it is our actions that make us who we are, not our status or appearance. They teach us that being a good person, even a hero, is about making hard choices, following our hearts, showing compassion to those around us, and doing what we know is right, even if it scares us.
I have been so lucky to have learned so much throughout this process, not just from the show itself, but from the incredible group of people working alongside me. For us as a company, this process has certainly not been without its bumps in the road. But in the face of those challenges, this incredible group of people has stuck together, lifting each other up and dedicating so much time and energy to this production. To everyone in the cast, production staff, pit orchestra, and crew, I am so honored and proud to have worked and created art with all of you. And to everyone who has come to see our show, thank you from the bottom of my heart. I hope this story touches you the way it’s touched me, and inspires you to live each day with more openness, compassion, and understanding.
Finally, in true Hunchback fashion, I want to leave you with a question - another one that this show asks that I think gets right to the heart of this story.
Someday, life will be kinder - why not make someday come right now?
-Natasha
The Hunchback of Notre Dame takes place in fifteenth-century Paris. This period in time was marked by intense ridicule of those with disabilities -- those deemed inexplicably different. The practice of publicly humiliating disabled townspeople can be traced back to ancient Greece and Rome, and was allowed to run rampant during the Middle Ages. The treatment of Quasimodo, who is both physically disabled and deafened by the toll of the bells, also reflects the duality of the Catholic church’s early beliefs about disability -- particularly his treatment at the hands of Claude Frollo. Those born disabled were understood to be the result of their parents’ sin and a connection to the devil. At the same time, the Church promoted the thinking that disabled individuals needed salvation and sanctuary, to be provided by charitable Christians. This complex interaction between religion and disability is explored in the staging and study of this production.
Furthermore, there is another important historical context to be considered -- that of the Romani people. The Romani people hail from the Punjab region of southern Asia. They entered the continent of Europe in waves, starting in the 1100s. Upon their arrival, they became the scapegoats of crime and plague in Paris. In addition to being ostracized by the people of France, the Catholic Church outwardly rejected their spiritual practices of astrology and fortune telling as witchcraft. Slurs such as g*psy were used against the Romani people by their oppressors to vilify their everyday lives. The Livingston Theatre Company has committed itself to bringing awareness to the unjust treatment of the Romani people, and portraying the Romani people as so much more than beggars, thieves, and witches -- as a people with a rich history and beautiful culture. A special thank you to Dr. Ethel Brooks of the Rutgers University Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies department for sharing her personal perspectives as a Romani woman and scholar with us.

The Livingston Theatre Company, Rutgers’ Premiere Musical Theatre Organization, is a home for theatrical arts at Rutgers University. Founded in the fall of 1998, the LTC provides quality and affordable musical theater to Rutgers students and the communities of Central New Jersey.
The Livingston Theatre Company is open to all undergraduate students of Rutgers University, regardless of college affiliation or major. We encourage all students to take part in productions, and to attend our open meetings, special events, shows, and auditions. We have opportunities for actors, directors, designers, stage crew, musicians, business people, and student leaders. Each year, hundreds of students from across the university get involved in our main stage productions. If you are interested come to our General Interest Meeting during the opening weeks of each semester, or to any of our open General Board meetings throughout the year.
The Livingston Theatre Company produces three musicals per year. Our productions run for several performances over one weekend. Throughout our storied history, productions have taken place in both the College Hall of the Livingston Student Center (the new and old), as well as Crossroads Theater in the theater district of downtown New Brunswick, New Jersey. We are dedicated to bringing both famous and lesser known musicals to Rutgers.
The Livingston Theatre Company is completely run by undergraduate students are Rutgers in New Brunswick from all schools. The head of the company is a 4 member Executive Board, which is elected by the membership, and a General Board that is chosen through applications and interviews. Anyone may apply, and selection is based upon experience and enthusiasm. Production positions such as directors, choreographers, musical directors, stage managers, and designers and technicians are also filled for specific shows via application and interviews. Anyone interested in becoming a part of the company, in any position, should check out the Getting Involved links at the top of the page for more information.
After a storied history, the LTC has established a strong base of alumni who continue their support to the organization. We always love having our alumni back, and enjoy a strong support system from them as well.
