NEWS FROM OUR CLUBS & SOCIETIES... Royston and the surrounding villages are a hive of activity. We are incredibly fortunate to have a wealth of clubs and societies within our town and villages, covering a wide range of interests - from arts to sports, adventure to support.

Melbourn community Royston Mencap Royston u3a When Margaret Reardon got married the Royston Mencap recently held a social furthest she had travelled from Cambridge allotment and bingo evening at Wetherspoons. was a trip to Southwold. But that all changed Fancy spending some time in the fresh air and getting more time outdoors?

Melbourn Community Allotment meets 10am-12pm every Friday (weather permitting) at the Moor allotments. Helpers get lots of fresh air, gentle exercise, and produce to take home. wi pm Royston WI pm meet on the second Thursday of each month in Fellowship Hall next to the Picture Palace. We are a friendly welcoming group of women from varied backgrounds and with a wide variety of interests. We meet regularly to discuss books, learn ukulele, take country rambles and enjoy lunch together. We also organise visits to theatres and places of interest as well as social events like coffee mornings. We are entertained and informed by professional speakers and in June local author Sarah Harrison will be with us. Try your writing skills in our fun limerick competition. Our next meeting is on 13th June from 1.45pm

On the last Sunday in April we had a coach trip to Paradise Wildlife Park. We were able to see lots of animals and could only marvel at the new addition of the Dinosaur Park. These remarkable exhibits were very lifelike and we were quite spellbound by them. Coming up in the next few months we have trips to the Nene Valley Railway and Cromer.

when she became the wife of colonial officer Patrick Reardon and embarked on a life in Africa in the dying days of Empire. She recorded her amazing experiences and challenges she faced in letters, diaries and photographs - and in her early nineties wrote the book An Unexpected Journey with her daughter Kate Armstrong and granddaughter Phyllis. Kate gave us a fascinating glimpse into Margaret’s life and said it has been a privilege to highlight her mother’s deep sense of duty and love for the work she helped her husband carry out. The next monthly meeting on 25th June 1.30pm at the Town Hall will be the AGM followed the life of W S Gilbert by Mike Levy

Have you been to The Lost City of Petra? Rodney Tibbs will take you there, learn answers to the 1812 rediscovery of this ancient city once on trade routes through the Middle East. If you are intrigued to know more come along to the illustrated talk in Heritage Hall, Town Hall Royston on Tuesday 4th June at 1.45pm The May meeting gave members the opportunity to socialise over team games, quizzes and refreshments. What is Black Squirrel Credit Union? BSCU is a credit union open to anyone living or working in North Herts. It is a savings and loans cooperative run for its members, who can save as much as they want on a regular basis. Membership is only £2 a year.
