issues of The Listing

The Listing started life back in September 2005 in a time before the internet was widely used, mobiles were solely for texting and calling, and Facebook had yet to be launched beyond Harvard University. There was a big gap for accessible, accurate local information, and The Listing lauched as a fresh new community magazine for Royston and the surrounding Villages, focusing on upcoming events, clubs and societies and promoting local businesses. 175 issues later, and The Listing has firmly established itself as Royston and SG8’s go-to what’s on guide for bringing the community together.

The Listing Team

The Listing is an independent business, and was launched in print only by Cath McKee/Boughton, who continues to head up the team and ensures the magazines are printed and delivered, looks for future opportunities and manages our sister marketing company. Sharon Windebank joined the business almost seven years ago, and has been instrumental in extending The Listing brand across our digital platforms - online and media channels. In today’s world, it is essential that our content is easily accessible online - in fact we have almost 8,000 consumers of our digital content every month. Sharon works with businesses throughout the area, developing their multi-channel advertising and marketing campaigns. If you run a local organisation, it is likely that you will have worked with our publishing assistant Tom Fox, who compiles and writes our editorial. Tom is with us two days a week until September when he goes to university to study Politics, Philosophy and Economics.

Monica Ryan runs her own creative business in Melbourn, and brings her creative flair to The Listing to create new adverts for our magazine customers, and creative projects for our marketing clients. Our ethos has been to work with and inspire young people who are looking to develop their career in marketing, publishing or journalism, and joining Tom is our marketing assistant Molly Everitt, who promotes our customers’ businesses and events across our digital media channels Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Linkedin. Laurie Brewster compiles our What’s On calendar, which appears on our website and in the printed magazines, full of community events happening in the SG8 area. Events are free to list so do get in touch. Lucy Boughton is back to support the team as an extra pair of hands around press times, using her marketing and design skills. Finally, our amazing team of 40 deliverers - local young people, families and retired people ensure that The Listing reaches your letterbox!

The Listing Magazine

We publish two editions of The Listing each month - The Listing Royston and The Listing SG8 Villages, which are hand delivered to over 16,500 homes in the SG8 area, increasing as and when to reach the new housing developments. We are at the heart of the community and each month work with some 3oo+ organisations, events organisers and businesses to publish their news and information.

The Listing Online

Our website receives almost 3,000 unique visitors a month. Digital versions of The Listing can be read on your laptop, tablet or mobile

The Listing team - Monica, Tom, Cath, Laurie, Sharon, Molly and Lucy phone, meaning you can access content on the go. There’s an archive of the past year’s worth of magazines too so if you’re looking for a number and need to reference back you can easily find it. The Listing clubs and societies directory contains details of some 450+ clubs and societies, and is also used on the Royston Town Website in conjunction with our What’s on events Calendar. Businesses receive the added benefit of appearing in our SEO-friendly online business directory when they are advertising with us, boosting their own digital presence and ensuring their details are easily found online - especially important for those businesses who don’t have a website or social media presence.

The Listing Marketing Company

Alongside business advertising and leaflet distribution, our sister company offers a range of marketing services from design, social media management, print and websites.

Stay in touch with The Listing at www.thelistingmagazine.co.uk or if you would like to discuss how The Listing can help you promote your business, event or organisation, contact us on 01763 248447 or info@townhousepublishing.co.uk

World Book Day

son but unfortunately, they have completely opposite views as to what that should be.

5th March will see the 23rd World Book Day. We love to read ourselves here at The Listing and we’ve each picked a book we’ve read recently that we enjoyed. All can be requested at WH Smiths and Royston Library, as well as online at various book outlets. Tom: The Spy and The Traitor by Ben Macintyre This book delves into the life and story of Britain’s most successful foreign spy; the KGB London rezident Oleg Gordievsky. In only 300 pages, Macintyre captures the grim reality of the communist Soviet Union, the mechanics of the KGB, the stain of Stalinism on the Soviet psyche, and censorship which ultimately pushed Gordievsky away from MarxismLeninism and towards democracy; not just of politics but of art, literature and music. After being discovered as a double agent, Gordievsky and the KGB spent weeks trying to work out what the other party knew. Operation Pimlico, the daring exfiltration of Gordievsky out of the Soviet Union, was so unprecedented that the KGB refused to believe it for many weeks and instead believed that Gordievsky must have killed himself. Few intelligence officers have ever played a more vital role in securing world peace than this man and his intelligence was so revealing that he was was debriefed personally by both Thatcher and Reagan. The Spy and The Traitor by Ben Macintyre www.bit.ly/TheSpyandTheTraitor Molly: ‘The Last Tudor’ by Philippa Gregory This book offers a female perspective on the Tudors surrounding the reign of Elizabeth I.

Claire had me gripped from the start and having not known the story line it must have been excruciating to write – a must read for World Book Day! After The End by Claire Mackintosh www.bit.ly/AfterTheEndBook Philippa Gregory delves into the personal lives of three young Tudor women, each with a compelling story to tell in their desperate struggle to keep their heads under the reign of a fearful queen. The chronological novel aligns the story of the nine-day queen, Lady Jane Grey with her young sisters Katherine and Mary. Their family’s claim to the throne shows the impact of having royal blood in your veins in the 16th century. This thought-provoking book highlights the struggle for women in a past that allowed them little or no choices. A gripping, historical novel full of twists that you may not have encountered in this familiar period of English history. The Last Tudor by Philippa Gregory www.bit.ly/TheLastTudor Sharon: ‘After The End’ by Claire Mackintosh It’s not often I fall in to a book from the start, but this book is a page-turner! I felt captivated in the characters in such a heart-breaking ordeal. It is really hard to say too much about the book without giving too much away. A married couple have to make a harrowing decision about their critically ill young son with a brain tumour. When they are asked to make a tough choice regarding his future and his treatment, they both want what’s best for their

Cath: ‘A Long Way From Home’ by Peter Carey I read this whilst in Australia this January. It’s set in the 1950s during the Redex Trial, a 1000+ miles plus car rally across rural Australia, dirt tracks and dust. Irene Bobs leads her husband throughout the race, set deeply within the country’s Aboriginal heart, and it follows the heartaches, loves, losses and sacrifices of following your dreams in the male orientated world of 1950s Australia. A Long Way From Home by Peter Carey www.bit.ly/ALongWayFromHomeBook If you’re struggling to find a story to read this month, we’d recommend heading to Royston Library to explore their diverse range of books. Other services available at Royston Library include a free online e-book and audiobook service available to members, internet safety sessions, tablet & PC one-to-one sessions and one-off author events. Furthermore, they host a range of weekly events including Toddler Tales in which they are inviting children to come to the library dressed as a character from a book on Friday 6th March at 2pm. Following a workplace accident which damaged his right arm Nigel subsequently wears a prosthetic limb which is fitted with a digital hand. Controlled by thought, muscles pass electrode signals into the hand which allows users to perform the most delicate of tasks

We have a new circular walk in this year’s diary and it’s one of Cambridge’s best kept secrets! We follow the path along a meadow, pass by alpacas and through kissing gates. It’s a well-trodden path that passes by a 12th century church that includes William Morris & Co stained glass windows. We then eat in a contemporary pub with a lovely preserved historic interior.

On a cold February afternoon local man Nigel Atkins came along to speak of his “Extra-Ordinary Life.”

Undaunted by other major health issues Nigel travels the world speaking at conferences/ seminars as ‘ambassadors’ demonstrating the new technologies in artificial hands/arms which enable users to lead vibrant, fulfilling lives.

We are a walking group of over 30 people, all single, from a range off backgrounds.

Come and join the Freebooters and share the secret of our walks, good company and splendid roast dinners.

Spotlight On... Increased Demand for Local Home-Start Family Support Home-Start Royston, Buntingford & South Cambridgeshire has been supporting families going through tough times for the past 35 years. Support is available to families with at least one child of nine or under who are struggling with: Post-natal depression, isolation, physical and mental health problems, relationship problems, multiple-aged children, bereavement and many other issues. How they Support Local Families Home-Start help local families through their unique Home-Visiting Service. A highly-trained volunteer visits the supported family every single week for two to three hours – providing practical and emotional support which is compassionate, confidential and free and tailored to the individual needs of each family. All volunteers have parenting experience so understand the ups and downs involved in raising a family.

Fundraising Opportunities As with any small charity funding is always high on the agenda and the 2019/2020 target is £159,000. Funding comes through various sources including organising events – there are quizzes, literary lunches and concerts to name a few. Home-Start also rely on the generous support of the local community who help in many ways including joining in with initiatives like the annual swimming aquathon, taking on sporting events, marathons, biking challenges, having cakes sales or making HomeStart their ‘charity of the year’.

To find out how Home-Start could help your family, to get involved yourself or to find out about their fundraising efforts and events, visit their website, give them or call or an email www.hsrsc.org.uk 01763 262262 admin@hsrsc.org.uk Incorporated as Home-Start Royston & South Cambridgeshire

Local Family Support Volunteers Needed This year the charity has seen a 57% increase in the number of families referred to them compared with the same time period last year, which demonstrates the increase in need for services in the local area. In order to meet that need Home-Start must recruit and train more volunteers.

Please note, to accommodate our early birds, we’re opening an hour earlier at 10am on both days this year.

Join us for two days of fun activities for all the family with Family Thriplow, Gun Dogs & Fun Dogs and Vintage Thriplow, or amble through over 100 stalls to find that something special. With live music being played all around the village it’s the perfect place to get some springtime cheer.

This year we are supporting the brilliant Royal Papworth Charity who are raising money for the Heart and Lung Institute. We are also raising funds for East Anglian Air Ambulance (EAAA) who operate two emergency response helicopters in East Anglia and are a vital asset to the safety of all of us. For information on our nominated charities for 2020, please visit their websites below. www.papworthhospitalcharity.org.uk www.eaaa.org.uk What’s On Offer It has been 51 years since the first Thriplow Daffodil Weekend and we’re determined to make this one our best.

For months beforehand and over the weekend itself, virtually everyone in the village (and many neighbouring villagers) volunteer to help organise the event – be it baking cakes, helping serve teas, working in the car park or picking up litter at the end of the day. Every year, the exceptional Thriplow community works hard to pull off one of the best loved charity events in Cambridgeshire. Raising funds for charity We have now raised money for local charities to a total of £617,000 over 52 years. The tireless work of the village was recognised in 2011 when the Committee received The Queens Award for Voluntary Service (the equivalent of an MBE for charities). This year our nominated charities are the Royal Papworth Charity and East Anglian Air Ambulance.

Some of the attractions on offer include stalls throughout the village, books, bric-a-brac, clothes, coffees, crafts, garden ornaments, gifts, jewellery, linens, plants and cut daffodils, sweets and much more! B Minor Mass J.S Bach Following the success of last year’s performance of Bach’s St John Passion, Royston Choral Society is very excited to be returning to Ashwell Parish Church in March to perform Bach’s momentous B Minor Mass. The work was one of Bach’s last compositions, not completed until 1749, the year before his death, and is a musical setting of the complete ‘Ordinary of the Latin Mass’. The early 19th century Swiss music critic Hans-Georg

Nageli described it ‘the greatest work of music of all ages and of all peoples.’ We will be joined by a stunning set of soloists and accompanied again by the East Herts Sinfonia. Tickets are £15 each or £1 for under 18s and will be available online shortly and from choir members. Museum Musings: Royston Cave Experience This year sees us joining up with Royston Cave to work together to promote Royston’s history. We will have a whole section about the Cave and its history, including objects on display. To make it even more accessible, there’ll be a Virtual Reality exploration of the cave. You can sit in the comfort of the museum and still see what’s down there. We’re really excited to be able to give more people access to the cave and get a feel for what it’s like. The cave will open for the 2020 season in April, but pop into the

museum before to find out more about this amazing piece of local history right beneath our feet. Come and join us on the 21st March from 10am to check it out. We’ve also been moving our other displays around too. There’s so much space in the museum! To find out more about the Cave head to www.roystoncave.co.uk and for the Museum, www.roystonmuseum.org.uk

Hardwicke Charity: Trustees Needed Vacancies have arisen for two trustees for the Susan Countess of Hardwicke charity, which administers the almshouses in Arrington. These comprise four dwellings, built in 1846 by the fourth Countess of Hardwicke, in memory of her mother Susan. You would be one of seven voluntary trustees and your duties would involve attending meetings as required (normally two to four per year), to ensure the proper administration

and care of the fund, the almshouses and their residents, with occasional site visits to inspect the properties and meet the residents. While no special qualifications or skills are required an interest in resident welfare, safeguarding and policy development would be useful. Is Anyone IN Your Village Living With Parkinson’s? Most of us do know of someone who has been diagnosed with this condition, who is now living with knowledge of what that implies for themselves and for their family and friends in the future. The Cambridgeshire branch of Parkinson’s UK exists so that People with Parkinson’s (PwPs) do not have to face the future alone. Meetings, therapies and a bi-monthly newsletter offer advice, information, and companionship – our members say that knowing that you are not alone is the best possible aid to coming to terms with the diagnosis.

It will be awarded annually to the person or group -- family, village, business -- making the greatest contribution to the Fun Run, whether it be in enrolling runners and walkers, raising money, or overcoming the greatest challenge by taking part.

From Tallulah’s Kitchen... Banoffee Pavlova

Hello, my fellow foodies, and welcome to March’s edition of The Listing. This month I would like to share with you a recipe which combines two of my favourite desserts: Banoffee Pie and Pavlova. I first discovered Banoffee Pie way back when I had a Sunday job waiting in a local restaurant. I used to hope that the dessert trolley would still have some left at the end of service as my fellow waitresses and I would be allowed to gobble up any leftovers. Happy days! And what’s not to like about a pavlova? Hopefully I have combined the best of both desserts. Let me know what you think. Banoffee Pavlova (6-8 Portions) 6-8 portions 4 egg whites from happy and healthy free running hens 250g Caster Sugar 1tsp White Wine Vinegar 1tsp Cornflour 1 tsp Coffee Powder For the Topping 350ml Double Cream 1tsp Coffee Powder 3-4 Bananas 20g Icing Sugar 200g Dulce De Leche

To begin, draw around a dinner plate onto baking parchment to mark out the base of the pavlova and pop the oven on to 150°C to preheat. Next, in a scrupulously clean and grease-free bowl, whisk the egg whites until they form stiff peaks. After, whisk in the caster sugar a spoonful at a time until you have a beautiful glossy mixture. Now, in a slow drizzle, whisk in the vinegar, then the cornflour and the coffee powder. Then, spread, pipe, dollop (whatever is your thing!) the mixture onto the baking parchment and within the previously drawn circle, then bake in the oven for one hour. After this time, turn off the oven but leave the meringue in the oven and avoid opening the door until the oven has completely cooled; this will help prevent cracking. The final product will keep for a week as long as it is kept in an airtight container.

When you are ready to serve, simply whip up the cream until you have soft peaks. Then, with a spoon, stir in the icing sugar and the coffee powder until evenly mixedyou may prefer a sweeter/more coffee taste so feel free to adjust the amounts to suit your palette. Spoon the cream on top of the meringue, then just before serving add the sliced bananas and finish with drizzles of Dulce De Leche over the top. You may have to slightly warm the Dulce De Leche to be runny enough to drizzle it or you may just go with the more “rustic” looking effect! Either way, enjoy it! Until next time dear reader,

News from your Town Council – March 2020

ANNUAL TOWN MEETING Thursday 19 March 2020 7.30 pm Royston Town Hall

Royston Town Council would like to invite all Royston residents to attend this meeting where you will learn what your Town, District and County Councillors have been doing on your behalf over the previous year. At the meeting you will have the opportunity to ask the relevant councillors questions that are of interest or concern to you. The Town Mayor’s Community Trust Fund awards will be made and special community awards presented to local residents who have made a significant contribution to the life of our town. Please put this date in your diary and join us for an evening to celebrate all that makes Royston such a great place to live and work.

Royston Town Council Budget 2020-21 The Royston Town Council precept for 2020-21 was agreed at the Full Council meeting on 20 January. The Royston Town Council Tax for a “Band D” property next year will rise from £47.29 to £48.49 per year, an increase of around 2.5%. It includes provision for the nationally negotiated increases in staff salaries; a donation of £2,000 to the Youth Council and money allocated for property refurbishment and additional resources to move forward projects to introduce new facilities, which we believe, will benefit the community. The first of these will be the installation of bicycle racks. Investigation is continuing on ideas such as safe walking/jogging trails and a new bandstand/amphitheatre for Priory Memorial Gardens. Royston Town Council has always been fiscally prudent. We will continue to manage and use your money with great care. John Davison - Leader of Royston Town Council Newsletter supported by:

Updates from our Mayor, Cllr Robert Inwood In May of this year, Cllr Inwood is planning to form Royston Youth Council. His aim is to give our young people a voice and a forum in which to express their ideas and suggestions to benefit their community. It is intended that members of the Youth Council will be aged between 12 and 17 in the year that they apply to be on the council, and either live, or go to school in Royston. Further information can be found on the town council website: roystontowncouncil.gov.uk. Our Mayor has also been attending many other events over the last few months and has thoroughly enjoyed every one of them. He attended, along with other local councillors, the very successful Christmas market. The town council would like to thank Rob Mills, the market manager, for his usual excellent organisation. The town council would also like to thank Royston Fire Station for their amazing Christmas Grotto, which our Mayor also visited. He said that it was a wonderful event for our community, and which went over and above their usual duties of keeping us all safe. Cllr Inwood recently had a very positive visit to the King James Academy and was shown around the whole site during the course of the day. Mr Farquhar, the head teacher, demonstrated the school’s new lasercutting machine, which creates a finished product from a CAD drawing. We all know how supportive Cllr Inwood is towards our local army cadets and he is pictured here at the Dodkin Hut, Tannery Drift, along with Cllrs Vera Swallow and Cllr Ian Coll. The open evening was for youngsters interested in joining the cadets and they watched demonstrations and took part in various activities. If you are interested in the cadets further information is available on their website: www.armycadets.com .

Saffron Screen at Royston Picture Palace

Plastic Free Royston A new initiative from the town council working group Naturally Royston, Plastic Free Royston, is now live. We would love to discuss how your business, home, school or community group could join in. Our team on the market on Saturday 25 January, collected pledges to give up items of single use plastic and talked to shoppers about how they could go plastic free. The plastic free certification does not mean giving up all plastic – rather it rewards and recognises businesses that have stopped using up to three single-use plastic items. This should be eminently achievable for many businesses, with the multitude of alternatives now available. There are similar achievable goals for schools and community groups. The certification is a great way to show off your green credentials as well as doing your bit to help the local environment. To achieve Plastic Free Town status for Royston we will work with several businesses, schools and groups within the town. Please do contact us if you are keen to be among the first to sign up. We will also be organising events such as litter picks that highlight how everyone can make a difference to their town.

Saffron Screen has now taken over the management of Royston Picture Palace and is seeking to offer a greater range of screening times and films to our community. Over the next few months, you will have more choice of screenings than ever before with award-winning films, popular family favourites and some silver screen classics. We are also excited to bring you two foreign-language films, both of which have been showered in accolades - the brilliant thriller Parasite and the swooning period drama A Portrait of a Lady on Fire. We look forward to seeing you in the cinema. Wellbeing

Burns Road Heroes

royston Youth Council Joining the Royston Youth Council is an exciting opportunity for young people in Royston to have their voice heard, develop their communication skills and so much more.

Money means different things to different people. For some it makes them feel secure, for others it gives them recognition or is seen as a means to enjoy oneself.

Those aged between 12-17 must apply before midnight on 31st March. Applications will be reviewed and on Saturday 25th April there will be a session to decide the results

You can’t always get more money, but you can feel secure when there are people in your community who want to help you. You can also be recognised, not for what you own, but by

the people whose lives you’ve changed with your kindness. You can even discover the joy of helping people in your neighbourhood for free. This is what the Burns Road Heroes have just started to bring to their neighbourhood. If you live in the Burns Road estate and you want to be someone’s hero or if you need a hero to help you, please contact Richard on 07935 706793 or Rebekah on 07714 373785

They have won the Best Business Woman in Health and Wellness Award, the Zenith Global Health Award for Allied Health Professionals and two quality marks from the Royal College of Chiropractors (PPQM and CMQM). The PPQM is awarded to clinics that demonstrate excellence in meeting patient expectations, with the CMQM applicants must demonstrate excellence in a range of areas including: clinical audit, risk management, incident reporting, outcome measurement, patient satisfaction, emergency procedures and operational policy. These awards take a lot of time to complete but they are very proud to be one of just 56 clinics in the country to hold both awards.

Chiropractor Louise Hampton, who started the business in 2007, has also written a book on low back pain which can be bought from the clinic or online www.low-backpain.co.uk. Invest in proper running shoes. You get what you pay for: don’t go cheap, you’ll only hurt yourself. A good personal trainer or specialist running shop will analyse your gait and suggest the best pair for you.

It’s more than just a concert – it’s a joyful celebration of the fact that children from Year 1 upwards can thrill an audience just much as the musical pros. If there’s

a child in your family who’s performing, don’t miss it. Youth Makes Music is coming to you live on Friday 20th March at Saffron Hall, Audley End Road, Saffron Walden, CB11 4UH! Business Profile

Wills by David Isherwood I moved here with my family in 1988 from Hampshire. I have played and coached sports in the area ever since then, probably best known for my cricket coaching at Bassingbourn and Royston Cricket Clubs, as well as many schools in the area.

I decided to start a business writing Wills and Lasting Power of Attorneys (LPAs), meeting people in their own homes and at times that suited them. This has proved popular and is the business I offer to the people of Royston and the surrounding area.

I also enjoy playing recreational table tennis at Bassingbourn and play Real Tennis, somewhat more competitively, in Cambridge and at Hatfield.

If you need a Will or LPA, don’t hesitate to get in touch. 07853 389432 David@willsbydavidisherwood.co.uk www.willsbydavidisherwood.co.uk

Spring Clean Your Business It’s March! How can we put a spring in your business step? You can do a lot worse than treating your business like you might treat yourself. 1. A new wardrobe? You don’t need to change just because of a time of year but I always think that spring is a great time to critically assess your business ‘look’.

The best businesses get out and about, and talk to their customers – if you don’t know what they want, how can you be sure you’re giving it to them? 4. Be a better friend? What can you do to keep your customers loyal and coming back (customer retention is so much cheaper than customer acquisition).
