Welcome

Next Deadline

The festive season is finally upon us, and along with the rest of Royston we are eagerly preparing for Christmas. This issue is filled with many festivities from Christmas offers, markets and much more.

Monday 10th December

This month we feature some Festive Things to do in and around Royston featuring favourite events such as Royston Cave by Candlelight, the Christmas Winter Fair, Rudolph’s Christmas Trail and Barley Christmas Market. Santa will be making his rounds from 7th December, you can find out when he will be coming to you on page 19. Christmas to us, as well as celebrating as a community, is about our families and our ‘The Listing Mentions’ this month gives some fabulous ideas about where to buy your loved ones presents in and around Royston. Finally, look out for our ‘star’ appearances in singer Joe Rose’s lively video, hot on the YouTube press, in aid of Home-Start ... you can see the music video on our website!

We hope you have the most amazing Christmas, and a Happy New Year. It truly is the most wonderful time of year!

Christmas tree light up

A tall, heavily decorated, tree in St John The Baptist parish church in Royston has become a popular Christmas feature for the local community. Last year’s tree was a monster festive hit since it was the largest there had ever been in the church, measuring some 25 feet in height. It took a week to decorate and had close to 2000 baubles and over 300 metres of lights. As usual the bottom branches of the tree were left empty so that visitors could place baubles on it in memory of loved ones who were not with them at Christmas. Saturday 1st December, 10am - 4pm

royston town band Your chance to name Royston Town Band’s mascot!

It’s that time of year again - the Christmas music is being dusted off and we’re warming up the jingle bells, ready for our festive carolling and a busy programme of concerts. The band’s mascot has been returned to the band by its creator Maureen Butler. As part of our Brass Roots project we are running a competition to name the mascot.. To take part, email your name suggestion to charmianflowerday@hotmail.co.uk or go to the band’s Facebook page. To find out if your name has been picked, come along to enjoy a programme of festive music and sing along carols at the Town Hall.

Royston Town Hall, Sunday 16th December, 7pm Wishing you a Happy Christmas from everyone at Royston Town Band!

Home-Start Matters

Joe Rose, better known as local accountant John Froggett, has been lured into the recording studio! Joe has performed a rendition of a famous song in aid of our branch of Home-Start and had fun filming a lively, laughter filled video to support it, which includes an ‘all-star cast’ of extras from twenty seven local businesses! (You might even spot an appearance from The Listing Team!) Our charity is close to the heart of both John/Joe and the label boss Helen Meissner who have trained with us and in Helen’s case, worked for a few years as a volunteer. ‘Starting a singing career at 60 is not something I had ever imagined but it’s been great fun to record with award winning young producer Lauren Deakin Davies, who was very gentle with me! Home-Start Royston & South Cambridgeshire provide a valuable and respected service which I really admire, and I wanted to support them.’

bumpkins toddler Tips Christmas Cheese Stars

Who doesn’t love star shaped things? These little cheese stars will go down well as a little festive treat at Christmas. All you need is a sheet of ready made puff pasty (at room temperature), some grated cheese and a little flour to dust the work surface. Encourage your child to wash their hands then unroll the pastry. Let your child sprinkle most of the cheese over half of the pastry sheet. Support your child to fold the plain side of pastry over the cheesy side and use a rolling pin to roll the pastry back to its original size. Now let your child cut out stars (or other shapes if you haven’t got a star cutter) of various sizes. It’s around the toddler stage that children begin to realise that tools can be used for a purpose. Encourage comparative language, bigger than, smaller than, biggest. All that remains is for your child to place the stars carefully on baking sheets and sprinkle each one with the reserved cheese. Pop them in the oven for 10 minutes at 200°c (180°c fan). Leave to cool and enjoy!

Royston Arts Festival 2019 needs you! Despite having just enjoyed one of its most successful years, next year’s festival, scheduled for September 2019, might not be able to go ahead without your help! Creative Royston, who organise the annual event with arts groups and individuals across the town, is a volunteer organisation. This year seven of its nine-strong committee have stood down, due to work or family commitments, and so they are actively seeking volunteers to join them. Positions vacant include chairperson and vice chair, but experience is not essential for many roles. The committee meets once a month through the year. Members are encouraged to come up with ideas for events and to work with the rest of the committee and arts groups in Royston to bring ideas to life. If you are interested in getting involved, please contact Creative Royston secretary Carl Filby on secretary@creativeroyston.org

I tend to nip out from the office to buy a few things and have a few go-to shops every year. Mia Caro, La Bella Vita, All Things Birch & Beautiful, Ladds, Dysons and Number 3 offer a great variety of gifts and stocking fillers. A number of them use their websites and media pages really effectively which makes my life easier and means I have an idea what I’m after. I also love the fact that alongside our independents we have Boots and WH Smiths. Boots 3 for 2’s are excellent value and Smith’s has a great selection of best-selling books.

Let’s face it, Christmas isn’t Christmas without a pampering set and a good book to read!

Festive bakewell tart Hello my fellow foodies...

and welcome to another bright and shiny edition of The Listing. This month I would like to share with you my recipe for a festive Bakewell Tart. This has all the flavours of Christmas with all the comfort that a family favourite can offer. This bake may seem a little time consuming, but dear reader, it can be made in advance and popped in the freezer (I would freeze it un-iced). Festive Bakewell Tart • A 21cm loose bottom flan tin. For the Sugar Paste you will need; • 250g plain flour • 125g butter • The finely grated zest of one orange • 75g caster sugar • 1 egg from healthy free running hens. For the filling you will need; • Approximately 1/2 jar mince meat • 1 tbsp orange liqueur • 100g butter • 2 eggs from healthy free running hens. • 100g ground almonds • 100g caster sugar • 10g Self raising flour • Finely grated zest of one orange • Few drops of almond essence For the icing and decorations; • 6 tbsp of icing sugar • 1 tbsp of almond/orange liqueur or water or lemon juice for a “family” friendly desert! • Any festive decoration you wish So let’s begin with the pastry. Sieve the flour into a large bowl and cut the butter into small cubes and add. Rub to a fine bread crumb consistency. Add the orange zest and sugar and rub together to a fine sand consistency. Make a well in the centre and add the beaten egg. Now with your hands work all the ingredients together to form a dough but stop as soon as they come together as otherwise you’ll over work the pastry. Now, leave to rest in the fridge for half an hour. Then roll out the pastry to 2-3 mm and line the loose bottomed flan tin, finishing the edges in a tidy pattern. While the pastry rests prepare the filling. Add the orange liquor to the mince meat and set aside to steep while you prepare the rest. If you wish to add any extras to the mince meat now is the time to do it. I think extra flaked almonds and dried sour cherries are delicious in this.

22

In a separate bowl, cream the butter and the sugar together until they become lighter in colour and fluffy in texture. Gradually beat in the eggs adding a little at a time and making sure that is all mixed in before adding any more. At this point you can add a few drops of almond essence and the orange zest. Then stir in the ground almonds and the flour, and mix until everything is incorporated. Make sure your oven is up to around 200°C. Lightly prick the surface of the pastry, this will help prevent the pastry blistering. Then spread the bottom with a layer of mince meat nice and evenly. On top of the layer of mince meat spread the almond sponge mixture to a flat even finish which will help with a nice even bake. Pop into the center of the oven until golden brown and risen, approximately 30-40 minutes. Then remove and leave to cool. When the bake is completely cold we can begin to make the icing (if the icing goes onto a warm cake it will just melt into the sponge). Also you don’t want to make the icing in advance as it will form a “skin” which will result in a lumpy consistency. So, with the icing in a bowl add the liquid of choice a drop or two at a time, stirring and working the mixture well between each addition. Do not be tempted to pour in all the liquid at once as that way trouble lies! Stick with it until you have a syrup like consistency and then pour on to the top of the bake and working the icing right to the edge of the pastry. A wet flat edged knife will help move the icing around without tearing the surface of the bake. If you are adding anything extra on top of the icing add now as a skin will form and result in you having to “push” your decorations into the icing resulting in a cracked finish. Leave for a short time for the icing to set and then the tart is ready to be cut and served... preferably around a roaring open fire! If it is not instantly all devoured then it will keep for 2 or 3 days in an air tight container. Have a fabulous Christmas my Fellow Festive Foodies and I wish you and a Very Happy Christmas and a very Merry New Year! Until next time, and indeed next year, dear reader..

sharon mentions..

Christmas is my favourite time of year and who doesn’t like an excuse to shop? I’m a firm believer in getting what I can locally and for me avoiding the pushy crowds. I tend to be a last-minute shopper but this year I’ve already started to make a list of what to buy with so many shops decorating their festive windows and promoting gift ideas, offers instore and on their media pages. So, I need to find gifts for: That special person in my life, well maybe something nice to wear or weekend trip away! Something for the girls in the office and close friends, candles, fizz and chocolates always go down well. Mum loves her perfume and jewellery and Dad loves anything in the garden or mechanical. Brother easy to please with a trip to Cambridge Wine for a special bottle of his favourite whiskey! For those no longer with me our florists always do me proud with a festive wreath.Have a great shopping experience, let me know how you get on – don’t forget a lot of our retailers always provide a gift-wrapping service!

rotary round-up

December is a busy time for all, but for one person especially so, therefore it will come as no surprise to hear that Rotary will be helping Father Christmas both to do his rounds on his float and also for children to visit him locally in his grotto for a chat and to receive a present. We will also be putting up Christmas decorations at St George’s Nursing Home. Like most, we will be enjoying a Christmas meal out, at Madingley Hall, and before that will be having fun at an Italian themed party. Our December walk on the 10th will be around the Wimpole Hall estate, meeting at the Stables at 9.45am and lunching there afterwards. www.roystonrotary.com

Home & Garden

Think Garden, Think Richard

Garden Focus... Garden Styles Melbourn garden designer, Richard Arnott

To continue my series of articles for 2018, designing with plants, this month I am going to look at evergreen shrub shape and form and how they can be used to give interest at this bare time of year. It is always key to evaluate the “garden worthiness” of the plants we include in our gardens. I like to look at the contrasting shapes and form as you will know but I also want to know how many seasons of interest the plant has. Evergreens tick the box for giving four seasons of interest but it is important to know how to use them to best effect Sweetly scented selections really help to lift the spirits on a winter’s day. If I am looking for a larger shrub I might use Mahonia x intermedia ‘Charity’ that has an spiky, evergreen leaf and long cylindrical spikes of yellow scented flowers. I would use this toward the back of the border. Medium sized scented shrubs could be used in the middle of the border. I particularly like Daphnes because they have a compact habit and are reliable evergreens. Daphne bholua ‘Jacqueline Postill’ bears fragrant clusters of pale pink flowers above a mid-green leaf while Daphne odora ‘Aureo – marginata’ has smaller clusters of fragrant white pink flowers with a narrow yellow margin on a grey green leaf. At the front of a border I may use Christmas Box, Sarcococca hookeriana var. digyna that has narrow dark green leaves and clusters of tiny, sweetly scented white flowers. It is equally happy in sunshine or shade, but prefers shade. Vertical forms make a good structure for the hoar frosts to settle on. I do like a well clipped Yew / Taxus baccata hedge in a garden. It acts as a back drop and gives structure to a mixed border. The dark feathery foliage is a classic garden look. Although strictly speaking a tree, the vertical, columnar form of the Irish juniper Juniperus communis ‘Hobirnica’ looks great rising out of the fog on a wintery morning. Yew can also be grown in a columnar form if you use Taxus baccata ‘Fastigiata Robusta’. Mound forming shrubs look great surrounded by the dying winter forms of a naturalistic hardy perennial border. I am a big fan of using box balls in my borders mixed with other well behaved shrubs such as dog woods for the pretty stems. Remember it is always about plant associations and combinations that make for a great looking border. Box balls with Cornus alba ‘Sibirica’ and the ephemeral dying forms of Calamagrostis ‘Karl Forester’, Verbena ‘Lolipop’ and Phlomis russeliana would look great in a little low winter light.

30

Horizontal forms are great for delineating space in the garden. As gardens are becoming smaller you must carefully choose how we enclose the space. High hedges have their place but more we need smaller delineation of space that is easy to maintain but looks great. Step up the low evergreen hedging plant Buxus sempervirens / Box. It can be clipped and shaped to make a classic garden statement. The bare root season is now under way and this is a great time to purchase your box hedging at a good price. Plant into a well-drained prepared trench at five plants a linear metre and watch them grow. Berrying and variegated shrubs have particular resonance at this time of year for flora displays and wreaths. You could grow shrubs with this purpose in mind. I like Elaeagnus pungens ‘Maculata’, Rhamnus alaternus ‘Argenteovariegata’, and Euonymus fortunei ‘Emerald and Gold’. There are loads of Hollies to choose from. I like Ilex aquifolium ‘J.C. van Tol’, and Ilex aquifolium ‘Handsworth New Silver’. If the birds have not taken them Pyracantha berries look good mixed into a wreath too! For more in depth plant advice or garden design help please get in touch.

Royston u3a

Royston U3A members were singing along to sounds from the sixties and hits from musicals like Oliver! in a talk on the genius of Lionel Bart. The boy from the East End’s earliest ambition was to be famous and his natural talent for brilliant lyric writing led to a spectacular rise to fame, said lifelong fan Mike Levy.By the age of 30 Bart had written the music and lyrics for several musicals including the internationally acclaimed Oliver! And he captured the spirit of the 1960s with a string of hit songs including Cliff Richard’s Living Doll and Matt Monroe’s From Russia with Love. “Lionel Bart was one of the great lyrists of the 20th century. He was amazing,” said Mike.

Royston U3A’s monthly meeting Royston Parish Church Tuesday 29th January, 2pm Chloe Cockerill will give a talk on Heraldry. For more details contact Jackie Gellert on 01763 248097 or jackieroystonu3a@ gmail.com or log onto www.u3asites.org.uk/ royston/home

Great chishill windmill souvenirs

David Brearley asked if he could have some wood discarded during the restoration from which he could make items as souvenirs. He has achieved some outstanding pieces that will be offered for sale at the Craft Fair on the Hill (Great Chishill Village Hall, December 8th 2018). All proceeds will go directly to the Trust to help with funding our ongoing project and future maintenance. David has asked for more wood as it becomes available so we may have more to offer in the future. We are extremely grateful to him for all his efforts.

Our November lecture was The Remarkable Story of Heffers of Cambridge by Julie Bounford. Julie commenced by telling how Heffers began and became known all over the world. They started life in Fitzroy Street in 1876 as a stationery business. They branched into printed matter, particularly academic volumes, which were big sellers. In 1896, William opened a shop devoted to books in Petty Cury. It became familiar to generations of undergraduates. Williams son, Ernest eventually took the reins. His other son Reuben and grandson Nicholas also went on to serve as chairmen. Other premises were added around Cambridge including a larger stationery store in Sidney Street, flagship name of Heffers.

Our next lecture is “The Battle for Female Suffrage” by Elizabeth Eastwood, to be held on December 6th, The Heritage Hall.

Professional just say a few words “We’ve got an important client coming to visit – you’ll be OK to stand up and say a few words about the company and our products won’t you?” Are you one of those people who reacts to a sentence like that with abject terror? I love standing up in front of a room full of people. But it wasn’t always the case – I was very shy as a child; hiding behind parents’ legs in every photograph and suffering terrible stage fright in school play. I was recently asked what advice I might give to someone who needed to make a quick presentation. Don’t worry Your audience wants you to do well; they want to hear what you have to say Decide on the big picture What are the main points you trying to get over? Why is your audience here? What’s in it for them? Why is this going to be of interest to your audience? Look at what you think you’re going to say and ask

the question, ‘So what?’ Find the benefits for them! Write down some words Now, starting with the benefits, develop a set of logical steps to lead your audience to your end point. I often use the voice recorder on my phone and say, ‘What I am trying to say is…’ and explain it to myself out loud. Always rehearse Rehearse with colleagues, or take yourself into an empty room and practice saying those words out loud. It’s very different to saying them in your head. Have a safety net Don’t use a script, but do have a card with selected ‘memory jogger’ bullets to refer to. What if it all goes wrong? Ring three friends and say, ‘You’ll never believe what just happened to me…’ and have a good laugh about it! That way it always ends up with a positive experience! julian@julianberry.co.uk

electric vehicle grants

Grant funding up to a maximum of £20,000 is now available to businesses in North Herts and Cambridgeshire, to replace their existing vehicles with electric vehicles, thanks to capital grants now available through the Business Energy Efficiency Programme (BEECP). BEECP can potentially provide grant funding up to 25% of the total costs, to eligible businesses for a number of energy efficiency measures such as LED lighting, heating and insulation, and as of the 1st October, they are now able to offer financial assistance to help eligible businesses to buy electric vehicles or invest in a solar PV renewable energy system. Antony Gough, Project Manager at BEE, explained; “To date, we’ve awarded over £190,000 in grants to businesses, enabling them to implement energy efficiency projects which not only improve their sustainability credentials, 44

They moved to the village of Litlington in 1986 in order to get involved on a local basis, supporting local businesses. Since then their reputation has grown and their wide ranging client base spreads across Cambs, Beds & Herts. Proof of the quality of service offered is evident by the many clients who have moved away from the area yet still retain their services.

but reduce their operating costs too. Funding is limited and only available until fully allocated, and at the current rate of applications, we estimate funding to be available until Spring 2019.
