Welcome to the January edition of your Quedgeley Link. Happy New Year to you all!

I do hope you all managed to have, or are about to have, depending on when you receive this, a lovely festive break with family and friends and are ready now for whatever the year ahead may hold.

It’s that time of year when we can think about loosing a few pounds, and getting fit for the year ahead. If you are looking for somewhere to go, give Holmleigh Park Sports Centre, a try, they have recently had a £1 million make over, more details are opposite. Fun Liners, are a local line dancing group which as well as helping with your fitness, is a good fun activity. You can find out where classes are on page 10. We are right in the middle of an extremely cold spell as I write this, and many of us are concerned about the costs to heat our homes but if you are also having any trouble with your heating during this cold spell, are seeking plumbing installation or requiring repairs, please do get in touch with local plumbing and heating specialists, Huntsgrove Plumbing and Heating, you can find their details on page 9.

A Man Called Otto

When a lively young family moves in next door, grumpy widower Otto Anderson (Tom Hanks, playing against his usual type-cast nice guy role) meets his match in a quick-witted, pregnant woman named Marisol, leading to an unlikely friendship that turns his world upside down. This comedy-drama is based on the book of the similar title “A Man Called Ove”

13th January

Empire of Light

Hilary (Olivia Colman) is a cinema manager struggling with her mental health, and Stephen (Micheal Ward) is a new employee longing to escape the provincial town where he faces daily adversity. Together they find a sense of belonging and experience the healing power of music, cinema, and community. Written and directed by Sam Mendes, whose previous films include SKYFALL and 1917, this film also features Colin Firth and Toby Jones among its ensemble cast.

20th January Babylon

Jack Conrad (Brad Pitt) is a struggling actor in Hollywood who will do anything to make it big. He meets Nellie LaRoy (margot Robbie), a former actress who is now a successful from the talkies. She takes him under her wing and helps him get started in the business. Conrad quickly becomes a star, but his ego and ambition get the better of him. He starts to believe that he is invincible and that he can have anything he wants. This leads to a spiraling downward spiral of drugs, alcohol, and women. His career and personal life are in shambles, but he doesn't care. He is until he meets a young woman who makes him realize that he has to get his life together. With her help, he gets sober and tries to make amends with the people he has hurt. He also tries to revive his career, but it is not as easy as he thought it would be.

The Fabelmans

Growing up in post-World War II era Arizona, young Sammy Fabelman aspires to become a filmmaker as he reaches adolescence, but soon discovers a shattering family secret and explores how the power of films can help him see the truth. Steven Spielberg writes and directs this semi-autobiographical tale, loosely based on his own childhood, which has already received rave reviews from its movie festival screenings.
