A bit about The Hucclecote The Hucclecote Hucclecote--Link LinkLink Link

Dear Neighbours,

Welcome to the January edition of your Hucclecote Link. Happy New Year to you all!

I do hope you all managed to have, or are about to have, depending on when you receive this, a lovely festive break with family and friends and are ready now for whatever the year ahead may hold.

I know many of you will still be worried about the constant costs of heating your homes, especially with the cold spell that we are currently having as I am writing this.

If this is something that is concerning you, please do head down to the Welcome Café who are also offering ’Warm Space’ at the Hucclecote Methodist Church, to see when they are open and for more details find them on page 18. It’s that time of year when we can think about loosing a few pounds, and getting fit for the year ahead. If you are looking for somewhere to go, give Spirit Health Club, located in within the Holiday Inn, a try, more details are on page 13. Fun Liners, are a local line dancing group which as well as helping with your fitness, is a good fun activity. You can find out when local classes are on page 19. If you are looking for an activity for your child, Ellie Wright Dance School are offering 2 Free taster sessions, read more about them on page 19. Do you have a business that is thinking about advertising this new year? If so, get in touch this month as we are offering 25% off our rates for bookings made in January. Wishing you all a wonderful 2023 Sarah. Dave’s top tips

Changing a lock

There are a number of reasons why you may need to change the locks at home. Maybe you have lost your keys. The easiest lock to change is what is commonly called the Yale lock. This lock is actually called a night latch and the whole assembly does not need to be changed as the internal working latch, barrel or cylinder, can be changed independently of the rest of the mechanism. This allows you to use a new key that after all is the usual purpose of changing locks

At the back of the door you will see the lock box. This is held on by two screws, which are located above and below the actual door latch. Release these screws completely and put them somewhere safe. You will then be able to wiggle off the lock box. When the lock box is removed you will see the locks back plate. This is the plate that holds the whole lot to the door. Sticking out of the back plate you will see a thin bar with grooves across its width. This is called the shank. Above the shank and to either side of it are two screw heads, which hold the barrel or cylinder to the back plate. Unscrew these and put them with the lock box screws. You should then be able to pull the barrel or cylinder out of the door. Take a new barrel or cylinder and lay it alongside the one you have just taken out. Measure the length of the shank and using a strong pair of pliers and a hacksaw, cut the new shank to the same length as the old. The grooves that are already partially cut in the shank are there to help you. When you have sawn a little way through the shank you should be able to bend it downwards to allow the shank to split in the correct place. Re assembling the lock is now a direct reversal of the procedure you used to dismantle it.

Regards Dave Stevens.

HUCCLECOTE LARKHAY WI

December is an exciting month with much to look forward to, especially for our members. Our Christmas party with speaker Patrick Furley presenting ‘Magic Christmas lantern’ slide show was thoroughly enjoyed. An eclectic display of Christmas crackers, made by the members (such hidden talents), added to the festive cheer, along with a free Christmas themed raffle. Several members sang in the choir at our Christmas concert held at Cheltenham Town Hall; some attended our WI house to join other institutes in Christmas craft activities. Memorable moments were had by all.

Our new year promises to be packed full of great entertainment from our varied selection of speakers. Preparations for theatre trips, lunch dates, courses and much more are underway, including both county and national events. Day trips are also in the pipeline. We would love for you to come along and add to our happy, much loved and appreciated member base at Larkhay WI. We meet the second Thursday of each month at the Hucclecote Community Centre at 7:15pm. We very much hope to see you there. Contact Sarah on 01452 548101, or Beverley on 01452 613208 for more information.
