Dave’s top tips

12

Looking after your gutters Over the last months we have had numerous calls about guttering problems. This has been greatly increased by the amount of rain we have had this year and now the leaves are falling from the trees matters are made worse. We have done other tips on guttering in the past but this one is about preventative measures. I have recently been using a gutter lining system that helps prevents gutter clutter and although the initial cost outlay may seem slightly high, it seems you may recoup the initial cost within its first year of installation. Installation is simple and requires all gutters to be cleaned. The next step is to lay this liner into the guttering itself ensuring it cant be blown out in high winds by using zip ties if needed. The installed product that looks like a very long bendy bottle brush then prevents leaves and moss from entering the gutter but allows the water to enter and drain away. This could well be the end to blocked gutters so future maintenance is minimal if at all. Obviously you will be working at height so safety is paramount, and you will need the correct access equipment. With this in mind you may prefer us to do the installation for you. Be sure to check out our website at www.dstevens999.co.uk for more top tips along with some great video tutorials to help you with your DIY skills Regards Dave Stevens. If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the investigating for you. Disclaimer. All advice above is given in goodwill with many years experience. We cannot guarantee however that your problems will be rectified so please, if in doubt call us before undertaking any works yourself.

HUCCLECOTE SCOUT GROUP The Halloween evening went well with a good fire and singing ended up with our usual fire work display. The Scouts had a session at the Go Kart Centre followed by two games of Lazer Tag as the start of our Winter activities. On 24th November the Scouts will be doing a conservation morning at the Hucclecote fields, cutting back this years growth and making it tidy. Also on 24th the cubs are looking forward to their camp at Cranham with the cubs sleep indoors with outside activities if the weather is good. The Explorer Scouts have already started to train for the Cotswold Marathon which is a 15 or 25 mile night hike in February. We won several silver cups last February so hope to do the same next year. We have spaces for boys and girls for Cubs 8 to 10 and half and Scouts 10 and a half to 14. For Beavers 6 to 8, their names should be on the waiting list before they are 6 (up to a year before) though we will try to fit them in as soon as possible. Please phone Terry on 521664 for more details.

St Philip and St James Church 'Coming soon to a street near you! Last year three Hucclecote Churches worked together to take a Christmas lorry around some of the streets of Hucclecote and this year we plan to do exactly the same again. The aim of the lorry is simply to say ‘Merry Christmas’ to as many local residents and to offer a complimentary chocolate. So look out in December we might yet appear on a street near you! In addition to our Christmas lorry we will also be opening our churches for a whole host of festive activities. My personal favourites include the festive atmosphere of ‘Carols by Candlelight’ on Sunday 16th December at 6.00pm and the excited children at our Christmas Eve Special at 4.00pm. Whilst nothing is quite like our Midnight Communion Service at 11pm on Christmas Eve my absolute favourite is our Christmas Day Service at 10.00am. There are events planned for young and old alike so why not come and join with us to celebrate Christmas. On behalf of St Philip & St James Church may I wish you a very happy Christmas and pray every blessing for you and those you love in 2013.' Gardening Tips for December from Garden Delight...

25

Here are a few tips on buying your Christmas tree and Christmas houseplants. Christmas Trees The Christmas tree in Britain is a fairly modern custom dating back to the 1840’s when Prince Albert brought the custom to Britain from his native Germany. Trees were traditionally decorated with candles, sweets small presents and paper chains. An angel on the top completed the festive picture. The Norway spruce was the original choice for most households but these days there a few more types to choose. Norway Spruce The traditional tree, a light green colour and by far the most affordable. This type does not hold its needles well and will need lots of watering and plenty of patience when you come to remove the tree after Christmas! Nordmann Fir The most popular ‘no needle drop’ tree. Typically cone shaped, usually very bushy. The needles soft and glossy dark green with a white stripe on the underside Noble Fir Very similar and often confused with the Nordman, it’s more upright and has short stiff well spaced branches which make it good for hanging decorations. It has great needle holding qualities and releases a lovely fragrance into the room. Other types you occasionally see for sale – Scots Pine – bushy shape good needle retention a lovely fragrance. Fraser Fir – dense and upright, holds needles well. Serbian Spruce a nice narrow tree which occasionally has cones but poor needle retention.

Choosing and caring for your cut tree. Buy from a reputable grower or retailer, always ask to see the tree unwrapped and never buy a tree that’s been stored inside. Don’t be fooled by signs that say ‘fresh trees daily’ it often doesn’t mean they have been cut that day just delivered that day... Most trees will be cut a while before they are delivered to the stores ideally after the first frost as this can ‘set’ the needles in the tree and help prevent needle drop. Trees used to be sold by the foot but metric measurements and pricing policies make this difficult to do. Basically trees are measured from the base to the top of the last set of branches as they are folded to the top tip. Once you get your tree home cut an inch off the bottom of the stem and put it in a bucket of water, when you are ready to bring it inside make sure you use a stand which holds water and top this up frequently; its not unusual for trees to go through lots of water, keeping them topped up will mean the tree will stay fresher and hold its needles longer. Potted Trees A lot of people are tempted to buy potted trees and plant them out after Christmas. It’s a great money saving idea but here are a few tips. Notice the difference between container grown and containerised... If they are grown in the container they stand a much better chance of surviving but be realistic... You are taking a tree from minus temperatures into a well heated house for two weeks and then back outside into the cold... Don’t be too surprised if they don’t cope with this!

Christmas Houseplants It’s quite common to buy a Christmas houseplant either for yourself or as a gift. Here are a few tips to help choose and get the most from your purchase. Poinsettia – best for warm draft free rooms, water from the top with tepid water and make sure the plant is kept out of chills on its journey home. Choose plants with tight flower buds (these are the yellow buds in the middle of the red leaves; they stay fresher and last longer. Cyclamen- best for a cool room, water only from the bottom, standing in a saucer of water for a couple of hours then remove and allow to drain. Over watering and high temperatures cause the leaves to wilt. When buying hold the plant up to the light and check how many new flower buds are hidden in the leaves, a healthy plant should stand up side down on its own leaves in the palm of your hand. Azalea – Best for a room where the temperature is a constant 10-15 degrees. Water by submerging the whole pot in water and wait until the air bubbles stop, let it drain and don’t let it stand in water. Ideally use rain water as these plants are acid lovers. A happy plant will have a centimeter of dark brown stem just out of the soil this shows its ideally watered and when this ‘lightens’ in colour its time to water again.

Plant of the month – Hamamelis Mollis – Chinese witch Hazel. Spectacular plant which starts to flower in December, bright spider like flowers appear on leaf less branches. Heavily scented you can cut a few stems for indoor decoration. Not a small plant and not cheap but defiantly worth the space and expense, its easy to grow and undemanding in the garden. Be sure to get the ‘mollis’ variety as this have the most flowers and most scent. Check out our web site www.gardendelight.co.uk for a full listing of the services offered Disclaimer – these tips are the resultThe of many years experience in gardening however no guarantees can be Please mention Hucclecote-Link when responding to adverts given. Hucclecote Horticultural Society Our Members’ evening in October was hailed a great success by all those who attended, and that was a good majority of our members. We swopped plants and seeds, bought a few of each as well, and taxed the knowledge of our committee members with questions about problems in the garden. Gardening is a funny business, some people reporting ‘a great year for whatever it was’, with others reporting that ‘whatever it is’ was a complete disaster. For the disaster people, never mind, we always have 2013.... Thanks also to Richard Hetherington, whose ‘what is this the Latin name for?’ quiz had us all stumped. I managed to get just one of those questions right – bottom of the class again! December is a blank month for us for a meeting, so we will be starting off the New Year on 24th January with a visit from Julie Ritchie of Hoo House nurseries near Tewkesbury, who will be following up our successful visit to her last year. On that occasion she showed us how to make our own compost, as well as showing us how to use it properly, so we are expecting some more good tips this time round. All meetings are at the Hucclecote Community Centre, and start at 7.30 pm. All are welcome: attendance and membership are not restricted to Hucclecote residents. More information from Chris on 610694.

Hucclecote Townswomen Guild Hucclecote T G were treated to a ‘stroll’ around “Bygone Cheltenham Spa” at our October meeting when Caroline Greet, showed slides and described some of the changes which have occurred in the Regency Spa town over the last century. It’s quite difficult now to visualise, even with the help of slides how things used to be-Imperial parade before the Queen’s Hotel, Cavendish House in the 1920’s, the Regal Cinema- opened in 1939 and fronted by Neptune’s Fountain, so very impressive! In 1903 the Winter Gardens were next to the Town Hall with the Central Spa (which had been modelled on Crystal Palace), where one could “take the waters” for health reasons, but which was unfortunately demolished during the war and sold to Bognor Regis for £75-00,though the spa waters are available in the entrance hall of the present Town hall! apparently the Playhouse theatre was originally a Swimming PoolRegent Street ( near BHS) was a riding stables-now Regent Arcade, and the well known Cheltenham College was originally a Military Establishment! A very interesting talk with quite a few surprising pieces of information about Cheltenham.! Members and guests also enjoyed a trip to Batsford Arboretum in October, a lovely time to see all the Autumn Colours in full glory and even the weather was kind for the visit! There is no meeting in December, but members Social Evening will take place on Dec. 6th, when we shall enjoy entertainment, and supper, to get everyone in the mood for To advertise call 01452 617040 the Festive Season!

The Christmas Fire Engine procession will be around Hucclecote this year on December 18th & 19th between 6.30-8.30pm. Hucclecote Guiding Parents Group will be organising it with the support of Guiders and parents. Each year a local charity is supported with this collection and this being our 12th year the chosen charity is to be Winstons Wish. This is our 12th year and over this time we have raised a substantial sum of money with the generosity of the people of Hucclecote and we hope this will be another successful year.
