Dave’s top tips Bleeding a radiator You may find that one or more of your radiators do not heat up to the top, this is usually an indication of air in the radiators and requires it to be bled. First thing to note is that radiators should not be bled or removed with the heating on as this can allow more air to enter the system. If there is any air in the system it will rise to the top of the radiator. On one side of the radiator there is a small square plug called a bleed valve. You will need a special key to fit this bleed valve and it can be bought from most hardware shops. Insert the key and turn anti-clockwise about a quarter of a turn and (if there is air in the radiator) you will hear a hissing sound as it escapes. As soon as the hissing stops a dribble of water will escape from the radiator. At this point close the key very firmly. The radiator is now bled. Regards Dave Stevens. If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the investigating for you. Disclaimer. All advice above is given in goodwill with many years experience. We cannot guarantee however that your problems will be rectified so please, if in doubt call us before undertaking any works yourself.

Will Advice from Dee & Griffin Solicitors After over 60 years of robust good health, I suddenly became seriously ill and ended up in hospital. We all take good health for granted and yet illness and indeed death can strike at any time. That’s why it is important to make a Will and I am astonished that so many people don’t bother. I have been a Solicitor in Gloucester for about 35 years and in my career, have encountered some real problems where people haven’t made Wills. For example, people assume that everything passes to a surviving wife (or husband) on first death, but this may not necessarily be the case. If there is no Will, then there is what is termed an intestacy and in this case, the surviving spouse will receive only the first £450,000 of her late husband’s estate where there are children. The couple may have a nice house worth £600,000 but no other assets of note, so she may not only have the grief of losing her husband, but be forced to act to comply with the law and this could possibly involve a sale of the property if the children do not cooperate with their mother to try to overcome the problem! Also, and even when a couple have made Wills, it is important to keep them under review. It is not a tick box exercise for life! An all too familiar example is where Mr and Mrs Smith made wills when their twins Tom and Dick were born. The Wills were simple and in the first instance they left everything to each other and with a gift of everything to be divided equally between Tom and Dick at 21 on the death of the survivor. Time passes and the couple celebrate their Silver Wedding, but sadly a few years later, Mr Smith passes on. More time passes and a lonely Mrs Smith meets Steve, falls in love and they eventually marry! Tom and Dick are happy for their mum as she has been transformed by this new love in her life. Even more time passes and Mrs Smith passes on. Her Estate comprises the house she purchased with her first husband worth £300,000 and some savings of about £100,000. Who inherits this? Tom and Dick are the beneficiaries named in her Will BUT this Will has been automatically revoked by her remarriage! Steve inherits as she has died intestate and Tom and Dick receive NOTHING! In my experience, many people do not realise that marriage automatically revokes a Will unless it is made in contemplation of marriage, so it is so important to ensure your wishes after death are met by keeping your Will up to date.

Hucclecote Scout News Ten Scouts passed their cyclist badge, they had to demonstrate control of a bike and know basic maintenance & Highway code questions. Only one scout knew the traffic lights exactly and their meaning (do you, I have to stop and think!) With 7 older Scouts going into the Explorer Unit in September, they have all gained their Chief Scout Challenge badge, which is the highest badge in the Scout Section. Their aim now is to gain the Queen Scout Award and go to Windsor Castle where the Queen or a member of the Royal family present the award after the march through Windsor on St Georges Day. We have not had any for a few years, this can be linked with the D of E award. The cubs are off to Cranham for a weekend camp at the end of June, hope they have good weather as they are now in tents. By now all money for Summer camp plus pocket money should be in, it is easy to loose money at camp but we have to organise local bank so it can be drawn out when required. If money is not in next week, Scouts will have to look after it themselves. Details of Father/Mother camp are not out again, money MUST be in by first Friday in July. Camp is at Cranham in patrols of own unit, cooking on open fires, partners and others welcome to come up to the camp fire on the Saturday night at 7.30pm. The Explorers built a Pioneer bridge at the Hucclecote Summer Fete which was enjoyed by all the children. Scouts finish the same week as the schools break up and start back at the same time. All boys and girls between 6 and 14 welcome to come along to their age range section and give Scouting a go. Phone Terry on 521664 for more details.

Hucclecote Garden Club All who attended our last talk, given by Mr. Bob Champion a local Horticultural Judge and member of the Gloucestershire Federation of Gardening Societies, were amazed at the variety of Fuchsias available . From the frost hardy to the frost tender, in a range of pinks, reds and purples, Bob knew each individual plant he brought along like individual members of his family, he is definitely the expert's, expert!! We look forward to hearing Bob's wise words again when he comes to judge the plants at our annual Plant and Produce Show in August. Sue Dodd and Sue Smith are coming along to give us an insight into the rarer plants of Gloucestershire and where to find them, in a talk entitled "Not so Common on the Commons" later in the year. Jon Mason from Highfield Nurseries will be giving a talk on Fruit Trees on the 28th September. Jon has been to us on many occasions in the past and as well as imparting really useful information, is a great speaker to listen to with amusing anecdotes from his many years at Highfield Nurseries, which has expanded beyond all recognition over the years and is one of the best Garden Centres in the county. We meet at Hucclecote Community Centre on the fourth Thursday of the month at 7.30pm, come along for a warm welcome and lots of gardening tips. Further info from Joy on 553185 or Sue on 543573. At the end of July we have a croquet afternoon at the Cheltenham croquet club, we have done this before and it is such good fun and the tea after is scrumptious. The Property Centre raise funds for National Star Charity A team of 16 walkers from The Property Centre, Abbeymead’s Top-Selling Agent, took on the challenge of walking 100 km of The Cotswold Way in June to raise money for local charity. Celebrating its 20th anniversary year in 2017, The Property Centre is known for undertaking exhilarating challenges to help local charities, and this walk proved to be their most gruelling challenge to date, completed at the peak of the June heatwave. The team trekked for 36 hours to complete the walk, raising over £3,000 for National Star, the Gloucestershire-based charity which transforms the lives of young people with complex disabilities. Having previously supported National Star as its Charity of the Year, The Property Centre team was keen to raise the bar with their fundraising event for this great local cause. “It’s 20 years since we founded The Property Centre, and as a proud local company we thought we’d mark our anniversary in 2017 by doing 20 things to support local charities”, said Founding Partner, Steve Jones. “National Star does amazing work with disabled young people and we really enjoyed supporting the charity with our Three Peaks Challenge last year. With that in mind, we wanted one of the anniversary events to be a real “test” – which doing the Cotswold Way 100k Walk in under 36 hours definitely proved to be. We’ve managed to raise over £3,000 so far though, so all the blisters were worthwhile!” Gill Henry, Head of Fundraising at National Star was impressed with the efforts of all the walkers. “We are so grateful to The Property Centre for completing the Cotswold Way Challenge in aid of National Star and for raising such a fantastic amount. It was a brilliant achievement for all involved and we appreciate their continued support.”
