Derby

20

Home to the first water powered silk mill and at the centre of the Industrial Revolution, Derby combines history and heritage with arts and culture and creates a vibrant, exciting destination for both business and leisure stays.

21

One of the city's longest established businesses is Royal Crown Derby, which is quite possibly the country's oldest porcelain manufacturer too. Dating back to the 1700s, Crown Derby porcelain was hugely popular with Victorians and gained its royal warrant when Queen Victoria appointed the company to be manufacturers of porcelain for Her Majesty. The visitor centre is located right in the heart of Derby and provides a real insight into the traditions, history and skills used in creating fine bone china. As well as having a retail shop and a museum showcasing the china creations, the 1750 Tea Room is perfect for afternoon tea and completes a guided tour of the centre in true style and sophistication! 22

If in Derby do Denby! The household name known for its tableware, cookware and serveware has a pottery village where you can visit the museum, take in a tour and paint your own pot before enjoying a light lunch served on Denby tableware. Photo Š Copyright Bill Nicholls / CC BY-SA 2.0

Away from clay and onto lead mining! The Heights of Abraham is a unique hilltop park reached by a spectacular cable car journey over the Derwent Valley. Originally opening to visitors back in 1780, it's the Peak District's oldest and most appealing destination. At the summit, visitors can explore the spectacular underground caverns, visit an exhibition, shop and either picnic or enjoy the fantastic views from the Vista Restaurant. 23

Fossil Factory

The Long View Exhibition State-of-the-art lighting really shines the spotlight on the two show caverns. Inside the Great Rutland Cavern, visitors can see a day in the life of a 17th Century lead mining family while The Great Masson Cavern reveals the magnitude of size and atmosphere. Above ground, additional attractions include The Long View Exhibition, Fossil Factory and Tinker's Shaft.

24

Breakfast at Betty's Farm is a must on so many levels! With over 24,000 free range laying hens and the fantastic on-site butchery, farm shop and cafĂŠ, you will definitely dine like a king! The farm is run with high animal welfare as the focus; the happy hens are laying about 22,000 eggs per day! A flock of 20 pure breed Jacob ewes and a larger flock of texel Suffolk crosses spend time at Betty's as well as the sister farm in Buxton, and a visit at this time of the year means lambs in the fields! Visitors can get up close with the only cockerel on-site and some of the chickens for hand feeding. There are also goats and horses who will wander over for a stroke! Betty's sausages, bacon, free range meat and eggs form the basis of the cafĂŠ menu with all dishes freshly cooked to order. And once you've enjoyed breakfast or a light lunch, head to the farm shop to stock up on free range produce for your own kitchen. The Great Masson Cavern

Derby Arena is the newest entertainment venue for the region pulling in big name comics, rock, pop and pantomime. It's also building a reputation as the Midlands hub for track cycling attracting elite cyclists and competition along with specialist sessions for novices, youngsters, juniors, women-only, seniors and veterans. Located on Pride Park next to the IPro Stadium, the ÂŁ27.5million arena includes a state-of-the-art gym and badminton courts too. Photo by Brian Townsley / CC BY 2.0

If your idea of being on track calls for less energy and you prefer to look back in time, put Pickford's House on your agenda. This hidden gem was the family home of Georgian architect Joseph Pickford and illustrates aspects of life from the 18th to the 20th centuries. Partly built and designed as a family home, partly business showroom, the house opens the door on a life between master and servant with knowledgeable, costumed guides and different collections to explore. Shopping in Derby is a contrast with the bright lights of the Intu shopping centre and the historical streets of boutique shops, arcades, restaurants and bars in the Cathedral Quarter, where you'll also find art galleries and museums. There is a diverse selection of real ales available in a wide range of pubs in Derby. Ye Olde Dolphin is the city's oldest, with stories dating back to the 1500s including Dick Turpin's romance with a women living in the pub. Micro-pubs feature at Little Chester Ale House and the Last Post with The Brunswick Tavern, Falstaff and Mr Grundy's worthy of a visit for their own brew! Get the best china out for Saturday 21 April is National Tea Day and if ever tea needed to be poured from the pot as opposed to a bag in a mug, it's this day!

and TV programmes The Darling Buds of May and The Thornbirds have all raised the nation into reaching for the kettle at the same time!

The 1990 World Cup semi-final between England and West Germany and the penalty shootout saw the England team pack their bags as the nation headed off to the kitchen to reach for the tea bags and switch over 1 million kettles on!

Tea has never been more on-trend than now. Whether the leaf is green or black, a speciality fruity fusion, a zesty, zingy brew for a mid-afternoon boost or a calming potion promising sleep, there's a huge tea chest of choice and the long standing argument on how to make the best cuppa will probably go on for the next 5,000 years! We do know 98% of tea drinkers add milk, although we don't know if that's pre or post pour/tea bag, and 30% of drinkers add sugar. Whether with a biscuit or breakfast, a lavish afternoon tea with all the trimmings or as a TV stress buster, over 165 million cups of tea will be drunk in the UK today!

Who shot EastEnders Phil Mitchell, the Rugby World Cup final between England and Australia in 2003,

Now, sit back with a cuppa and pour(!) over our favourite five hotels brewing the perfect afternoon tea!

After water, tea is the most widely consumed drink on the planet. At 5,000 years old, it's a natural source of fluoride so it's good for gums and teeth, it has half the amount of caffeine than coffee does and it’s the only drink capable of causing a power surge on the national grid at key moments in time!

TAPLOW HOUSE HOTEL AND RESTAURANT Delicious all year round, the team at Taplow House Hotel have created an extra special Royal Afternoon Tea to be enjoyed on Friday 18 and Saturday 20 May. Finger sandwiches, freshly baked scones and a delicious selection of cakes and sweets can be enjoyed with bubbles to toast the royal couple. There's a fine choice of teas and coffees and a premium gin menu, just in case you did want to steer away from the spout!

DONNINGTON GROVE AND COUNTRY CLUB Situated in the heart of Berkshire and famed for its golfing events, Donnington Grove Hotel offers three tea packages; cream tea, traditional full afternoon tea and celebration tea. Enjoy a pot or two of fair trade tea with a selection of sandwiches made with farmhouse bread, scones with strawberry jam and clotted cream, afternoon pastries and fruit cake. With hand-painted wallpapers, decadent furniture, old tapestries and paintings creating an elegant backdrop, the setting is perfect for afternoon tea.

REMBRANDT HOTEL The ornate architecture of this Edwardian building sets a scene reminiscent of a bygone elegant era where tea was definitely loose leaf and poured from bone china tea pots. The Rembrandt in London's Knightsbridge serves afternoon tea from midday to 6.30pm in the 1606 Lounge Bar and Conservatory. Smoked salmon, cream cheese, egg and cress and ham and mustard finger sandwiches, freshly baked scones with Devonshire clotted cream and strawberry jam, mini cakes, a glass of champagne and a choice of teas or a cafetière of coffee make for a truly memorable experience.

34

ABBEY HOTEL WORCESTERSHIRE Enjoy a pot of Abbey afternoon tea with finger sandwiches, raisin scones and clotted Cornish cream while savouring the views over the Vale of Evesham at the Abbey Hotel in Great Malvern. Built on the site of a Benedictine monastery at the foot of the Malvern Hills, it's an impressive setting, guaranteed to charm.

FRANCIS HOTEL BATH MGALLERY BY SOFITEL Combine stunning views over Queen's Square with three tiers of heavenly afternoon tea, impeccably served in the delightful Tea Room of the Francis Hotel Bath Mgallery by Sofitel. Pick the high tea menu for additional patĂŠs and pots, including pork rillettes, soused vegetables and potted shrimp. It's a food paradise with lemon drizzle cake, vanilla Madeleines and of cause, scones, jam, fresh berries and clotted cream.
