Stoke-on-Trent Discover a rich industrial heritage in this world-famous city which was the birthplace of British pottery. Photo by Futurilla / CC BY 2.0

Images by Gladstone Pottery Museum

Home to the headquarters of Spode, Wedgewood and Royal Doulton, there are plenty of pottery factory stores to tempt, including the Potteries Shopping Centre in Hanley. To experience the famous bottle kilns up close and personal, Gladstone Pottery Museum gives visitors a real insight into life on a Victorian pottery factory when coal burning ovens made the world's finest china.

Demonstrations of traditional skills, the original workshops, huge bottle ovens and the cobbled courtyards transport visitors back to the Industrial Revolution. Allow up to three hours for your visit so you can either throw your own pot or make a china flower for decorating pottery.

Middleport Pottery is one of the last remaining, fully working Victorian potteries and still uses traditional manufacturing methods, including a rare under glaze transfer printing process. Specialising in traditional shapes and patterns, a piece of Burleigh pottery will have passed through at least 25 pairs of hands in the creation process. The Grade II listed site is next to the Trent and Mersey Canal and as well as the visitor centre, the factory shop is well worth a visit. Š Copyright Mat Fascione

A great way to see more of the City and explore its heritage is via the China Trail, a scenic cycle way which is mostly traffic free. The circular route takes in many of the potteries, including Dudson Museum where visitors can step inside the Grade II listed bottle oven, explore the old factory courtyard and see the company's creations, which date back to 1800. Back on the bicycle and the China Trail continues to Central Forest Park in Hanley, which has the perfect spot for a picnic, and then hits the canal towpaths to Etruria Industrial Museum, which is the world's only operational steam driven potters' mill.

One of England's last, great garden estates, Trentham, makes a great day out for all the family with a multitude of outstanding attractions, including the unique Monkey Forest, a flagship garden centre and Trentham Shopping Village. Not to be missed though are the award-winning gardens. With 725 acres, you don't need to be green fingered to be blown away by the beauty and variety. Following a restoration project in 2016 to celebrate 300 years since the birth of landscape architect Lancelot Capability Brown, work has revealed the lost connection between the west parkland and Brown's mile long lake, adding to the scale and grandeur of Trentham. The Eastern Pleasure Ground, which was once simple parkland, now offers two areas, created by the Dutch garden designer Piet Oudolf. The prairie garden River of Grass encourages the unrestricted flow of plant form and texture while the Floral Labyrinth is all about hot colours and heady scents set against a backdrop of historic parkland.

The Italian Garden is designed to provide interest all year round and with 80,000 perennials in over 400 varieties in 70 flower beds, it's one of Europe's largest contemporary perennial plantings and was designed by Chelsea Flower Show Gold Medal winner Tom Stuart-Smith. 16

For a completely different experience where white knuckle rides rule, dive into the delights of Water World! The tropical indoor aqua park sets the scene for adventure, with twists and turns at heights of 375 feet to splashdown! Rides and activities include Plunge pools, the Space Bowl and the Black Hole, flumes, an underwater interactive jungle house, bubble and wave pools plus a Jacuzzi for those who prefer relaxation over rapid rides. And when the hunger pangs take over, head to the poolside restaurant to whet your appetite!

Steam features in Stoke too with two different railways, the Churnet Valley Railway and Foxfield. Churnet offers a choice of dining and experience days, including driving a train, brunch, afternoon tea and supper trains. The Foxfield Railway is a great afternoon out around rural Staffordshire in heritage coaches pulled by historic steam engines. When it's time to dine out, Stoke-on-Trent has a fabulous choice of restaurants serving traditional and contemporary English, American, Italian, Indian and Asian cuisine.
