Original Halloween Costume Ideas on a Budget Kelly Rulison Staff Writer Halloween is almost upon us, which means it’s time to celebrate the evil that walks our earth. To survive the night, we must dress up and blend in so that supernatural beings cannot recognize us.

For those who have a small budget, but wish to not look it, below are some ideas to get the ball rolling.

Zombies have been overused, instead be a survivor of an attempted homicide with some elementary Elmer’s glue and red food coloring that makes horrific wounds as far as the eye can see? Wear a shirt that you won’t mind ruining, and ripped up pants to give the illusion of having run through forested areas.

To achieve originality, get a box and cut out holes for the legs, arms, and head. Then cut six plastic cup size holes, paint it all one color and you’re a Lego. It is best to wear tights and a long-sleeved shirt with this costume.

For even simpler ideas raid the closet for a black jacket, gardening gloves, and crazy glasses to be a mad scientist.

Couples could dress up as PB&J with one wearing a tan shirt that says ‘“JIF”, and the other wearing a purple shirt that says “Welch’s”.

This next idea simply requires balloons and a T-shirt. Blow up the balloons, and stick them to a shirt of the same color and you are grapes. Leaves can be used as accessories.

Also, to make a gypsy costume, where a long skirt of any color with a multi-colored top of your choice and go all-out with jewelry.

Get out a cute dress, black boots, and a redhooded cape to be Little Red Riding Hood.

For those with a lot of time on their hands who want to be the most creative, buy some non-toxic facepaint for less than $20 at any local store, get a large picture frame, and turn yourself into a work of art.

Where To Go When You Want a Royal Flush Eric Welch Staff Writer

After being in nearly all of the student restrooms, I have concluded that all bathrooms on the Godfrey campus of Lewis and Clark Community College are not created equal.

While on my journey of the bathrooms, I noticed a diversity of what is considered upper and lower tier.

Due to this variance, ranking and reviewing restrooms became a necessity. The four categories when rating each restroom are style, technology, sanitation, and location.

Style consists of the decor and atmosphere of the room. Technology is simply whether the bathroom features automatic sinks, hand-dryers, toilets, etc.

Sanitation is how clean the bathroom is, and location is how conveniently the bathroom is placed.

Something to point out is that I place no blame for the cleanliness or conditions of the restroom on the janitorial staff. Responsibility for cleaning up after themselves lies with everyone who uses the facilities.

The highest quality of the bathrooms here on campus are located within the nursing building. These bathrooms are all well kept, and are completely automated.

Automation is important because it helps keeps bathrooms clean to prevent the spread of germs that come with public use. Their location is also ideal because they are all within view when you exit the main staircase on any floor.

“The bathrooms here are hit or miss. I think the bathrooms in this [Nursing] building are better than

the ones in the Baldwin and Caldwell building,” Exercise Science major, Jarine Reif said.

The unfortunate low point of the bathrooms here on campus are the heavily trafficked Baldwin and Caldwell buildings. The bathrooms are dated and showing age with chipped coats of paint, graffiti, and stained toilet seats.

The cleanliness was sub par with used paper towels on most of the floors and the bathrooms stalls were atrocious. There was no automation in any of the restrooms and one female bathroom had a major flaw in design.

The female restroom in between The Bridge office and Reid Cafe has a trash receptacle that has been replaced with another style and moved backward from its original place. This leaves stall goers with the ability to see into the next stall over by pushing the old trash can flap open.

Other restrooms sampled on campus fall on the spectrum between the ones previously mentioned.

They aren't great, but you won't mistake them for an outhouse.

"I have no negative opinion towards them," Computer Engineering and Programming student Robert Kallal said.

While any other upgrades would be well received, a possible easy improvement to all restrooms would be the installation of a motion sensing air freshener.

New Media Technology Classes Now Offered Julia Johnson Business Manager

Lewis and Clark Community College now offers the New Media Technologies Certificate of Completion program. It’s designed to help students interested in working with creative technology but are not sure which program they want to pursue.

New Media Technologies I and II (MDIA 131 and 132) are two introductory classes which are made up of eight modules. Each module covers different technology-based programs offered at L&C. While enrolled in the program, students’ elective choices will be courses that will count toward a chosen Applied Associate’s Degree, as well as the New Media Technologies Certificate Program.

The process to add the program to the approved curriculum could not be completed until the July before the Fall 2014 semester began. This caused difficulty in marketing the certificate program

and corresponding courses to incoming freshmen who the course is primarily intended for.

As a result the course, New Media Technologies I, offered this Fall semester, only had one person enrolled and was canceled.

Now that the certificate program has been approved, it can be marketed much more effectively and hope to increase enrollment for the spring and following fall semesters.

“We’re fortunate to be hosting many high school guidance counselors here at Lewis and Clark in the spring and can give them more information about the new certificate program so they can inform their students,” Program Coordinator, Steve Campbell said.

One of the program’s new classes, Social Media Marketing (MKTG 240), has had nearly full enrollment this fall semester despite poor enrollment in New Media Technologies I. MKTG 240 is offered online only this semester and is a component of many new and existing degrees and certificates offered

at L&C. To obtain the new Social Media Management certificate, students are only required to take MKTG 240 and Issues in E-Commerce and Social Media (BUSN 161).

Students who receive the Social Media Management certificate or New Media Technologies certificate will also be given the other since requirements for both certificates consist of the same classes.

The Social Media Management certificate program can be applied to a much broader base of careers. Its versatility may account for the successful enrollment figures of the first class offered in the certificate.

“I am enthused about this course and I am applying the lessons in real time in both my job and my personal life. After all, we’re all marketing ourselves all the time,” Paige Allen, Media Information Specialist and Social Media Marketing student said.

If enrollment requirements are met, New Media Technologies I and II will be offered every Fall and Spring and students can take

classes in any order.

12th Annual Water Festival Hosted at Lewis and Clark Julia Johnson Business Manager

Local 5th graders visited the Godfrey campus of Lewis & Clark Community College on Friday Sept.

19, 2014 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m during the 12th annual Water Festival.

The festival consisted of stations hosted by different organizations.

Stations covered a range of topics, from water’s impact on history, local wildlife, conservation and protection of our water supply.

L&C students and faculty volunteered by assisting with activities and guiding groups of students through the event.

A highlight of the event was an interactive presentation about the Lewis and Clark expedition hosted by the Lewis and Clark Historic Site.

The presentation was given by L&C professor and guide at the Lewis and Clark Museum, Brad Winn.

L&C’s own Sustainability

Center and Student Sustainability Association hosted an activity called “Water, Water, Everywhere!”. The activity was presented by the Director of Sustainability, Nate Keener, Vice President, Johnny Allison, and Alexandra Ruiz, a student member.

“The purpose of our activity was to demonstrate how little water there is available to humans on this planet.

We started with an aquarium full of water that represented all the water on the earth, and by the time we removed everything not available to humans, we were left with just a few drops to represent water in rivers, from which humans obtain most of their water,” Keener said.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources hosted Urban Fishing and Canoeing with IDNR. The fishing station taught proper casting and helped students identify fish.

Scott Isringhausen explained the historical use of canoes for fur trading along the rivers of the region during

the canoe rides.

“This year’s festival ran smoothly, especially with the addition of so many helpful volunteers, but the noticable change to this year’s festival was the addition of a responsibility where each class had the opportunity to collect pairs of shoes for the Shoeman Water Project,” Natalie Marioni, Photo by Julia Johnson Environmental Education Manager Scott Isringhausen about fur trading along the Miss. Tonya Koller’s Carlinville elementary class won t-shirts for collecting the most shoes with a total of 156 pairs.

Shoes collected are sold at a reduced price with profits going towards making clean drinking water accessible for all.

Two New Campus Clubs Zachary Shaw Staff Writer Lewis and Clark Community College is home to a diverse student body and offers many clubs and activities to a variety of their students’ hobbies and interests.

L&C offers the regular organizations like Student Government and Radio Broadcasting, but this semester, two new clubs are have been added to the list.

The Gamer’s Roundtable and The Fighting Lions are looking to become a cornerstone in student involvement out of the gate. The Roundtable is a club that discusses Japanese anime, and spends time playing various video games.

“The Gamers Roundtable targets people who are interested in getting in touch with their nerd side, and I mean that in a good way,” founder of the club, Lucas Gardner said.

Gardner has always wanted to belong to a club like his, but that was not a possibility in high school. So this Fall when he had the chance to create his dream club, there was no question about it.

“I hope to bring people together and enjoy doing what a lot of people enjoy doing, and that is gaming,” Gardner

said.

TGR's meetings are held every first and third Friday of the month in the Underground Connection from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. and anyone interested is encouraged to come.

Gardner is expecting the club to grow to a membership of around 30.

The Fighting Lions’ name hints at their club’s function: self defense.

However, this club is not one dimensional, the club also focuses on dancing.

“The goal of The Fighting Lions is to bring people’s self confidence up,” club founder, Tanner Brooks said.

Membership of The Lions has already grown to 10 plus. Brooks is looking for more people to become engaged by getting the club name out there.

TFL's meet every first and third Tuesday of the month from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the Hatheway Hall dance studio.

Future Food Options Eric Welch Staff Writer Food is an important resource to students on campus and it comes in two forms: snack machines and cafes. The student club SCORE and the Business Planning class are working towards a third option.

This project is a food cart that will be moving through the halls on campus.

“It is a project that was created by the business class to give them a lab to use for practical experience,” Accounting professor, Doug Schneiderheinze said.

Hours of operation are still being worked out by the students involved. It is expected to begin operations either late this semester or at the beginning of the spring semester.

“We will not be open during cafe hours and we hope to fill that niche that appears after 2:00 p.m.,” Schneiderheinze said.

The menu will include several types of coffee, soft drinks, and food wraps that will be easy to eat on the go. The cart will also be very accessible since it will have an app that will tell students where to find it.

Anyone seeking more information about the food cart is welcome to attend the next business meeting at 5:30 p.m. on Nov. 4, in Caldwell 3319 Hall.

While this food cart will be great for

students on campus as consumers, it may also present an opportunity for business students. Profits of the food cart may go towards business scholarships for students here on campus.

While the food cart will add variety to campus, it may be time to examine a problem that exists on campus already.

A poll of the student body questioned 70 students. 22 of them agreed that the snack machines on campus were unreliable.

Of the students who use the vending machines 48 percent of them don't trust them. ”They are reliable and convenient.

(Although) it might be that one time where you put in your money in and don’t get anything back,” Occupational Therapy Assistant student, Shakeyia Brooks said.

Poll results also show 60 percent of students who use the snack machines have had problems with them in the past.

“They are awful. I could have the most crisp dollar bill and it still won’t take my money. They are also a little overpriced,” Psychology student, Josh Chappell said.

If students experience problems with the vending machines, contact (618)-4683170 for a refund. This doesn't solve the vending machine problem, but it ensures that students are not robbed. etwelch@lc.edu

Bits and Bytes of Advice with Athena Athena Whitty Editor in Chief

Dear Confused and Frustrated,

Dear Athena, I’m having some issues with a fellow co-worker and I’m not sure what to do. I have worked at my place of employment for the past four years, and we have gotten along before with no problems.

However, now it seems like things have done a complete 180. She is constantly telling me what to do and how to do it; even though she is not my boss. I have spoken to my manager about it, but it doesn’t seem to have done anything about it.

I can’t stand to continue to work like this, so any advice on what I should do?

-Confused and Frustrated

Remember when dealing with co-workers is that they have lives outside of work. We’ve all had moments where our home life has leaded over to our work life.

Keeping it in mind that you may not be the real cause of the problems makes it easier to tackle this issue. Try speaking with the co-worker politely and directly, as she might not realize there is an issue in the first place.

Inform her that your supervisor has already assigned daily tasks and if she would like you to complete any additional tasks to speak directly to your supervisor.

Approaching the situation this way has two benefits. The first being, that Whitty it keeps you out of trouble if your supervisor sees you doing something that was not assigned to you.

Secondly, this brings the problem directly to the supervisor and allows them to deal with the situation how they see fit. This also make the co-worker your supervisor’s problem, not yours.

If the problem persists, speak with your supervisor about it once more before escalating it up the chain of command.

When speaking with your supervisor, remember your approach makes a difference in their response. Tell your supervisor you are concerned with being able to complete your daily tasks properly with additional tasks assigned from the co-worker.

Also, ask your supervisor for a copy of your job description if you are not trained on the tasks you are being ask to complete to cover yourself.

If you’ve spoken to the co-worker, your supervisor and other supervisors with no results, it might be time to job search. No one should be miserable at work. athenawhitty@yahoo.com

Darick’s Top 5 Must See Horror Movie Picks Darick Earney Associate Editor

It’s that time of the season, where trick-or-treaters everywhere suit up for one night of free candy and plenty of scares. As a fan of Halloween, it’s dire to share a list of my top favorite horror movies to watch during this season.

Coming in at number five is “Night of The Living Dead”.

While it may not be the very first zombie movie, is definitely a pioneer of the genre.

Watch as the two main characters, Ben and Barbara, come together with a group of strangers to survive the reign of bloodthirsty ghouls in an abandoned cabin.

Number four on my list is none other than Alfred Hitchcock’s “Psycho” from 1960. This thriller tells the story of Marion Crane, a former secretary from Phoenix, Ariz., who steals $40,000 from the bank she used

to work for, and flees the state to begin a new life.

After a long drive out of town, a vicious storm hits, causing her to pull into the nearest hotel where she is acquainted with the sadistic hotel owner, Norman Bates.

This film now serves as the basis for the hit A&E original TV series titled “Bates Motel” Boiling Earney it down to my top three isn’t easy, but “The Exorcist” is my third choice. It follows a little girl named Regan, whose soul is possessed by a demon. Father Merrin and Father Karris are asked by the family to aid Regan with exercising her demon. Let the power of Christ compel

you, with this 70s horror masterpiece.

At number two is another original “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” from 1974. The plot centers around a van full of five friends who are on a journey to a family cabin, when they pick up a psychotic hitchhiker.

After a fight between the hitchhiker and the five friends, they are left stranded and must fight to survive the disturbed family of the hitchhiker in a remote house.

Last but not least is John Carpenter’s 1978 slasher classic, “Halloween”. While some may confuse the name Michael Meyers as the comedian who played Austin Powers, fans of the horror film genre remember him as the butcher-knife wielding serial killer.

This story focuses on Laurie Strode and her friends, who are looking to have fun on Halloween night, when word gets out that her older brother

Michael has escaped from the mental hospital to take her life.

Fall Fest Features L&C Clubs & Organizations Julia Johnson Business Manager Lewis and Clark Community College welcomes new and returning students with its annual Fall Fest. At the event students learned about clubs and organizations on campus, participated in various activities, met fellow students, and were given lunch.

This year the festival was held on Wednesday, Sept. 24 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in front of The Hatheway Cultural Center. The festival area was divided into two adjoining sections.

A row of tables lined the sidewalk where students lined up to get their lunch which were occupied by members of the various clubs and organizations at the event. Many of the groups had relevant activities on their tables to engage students as they passed by each table.

A few of the groups represented at this year’s Fall Fest included, L&C Student Government, Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, LC Pride, Veteran’s Club, and Blazer Cheer Squad.

Phi Theta Kappa handed out information on joining their Honor Society, registering to vote and becoming an organ donor.

“This is my first Fall Fest, I think it is awesome, gorgeous weather and there are a lot of people, this is a great way to talk to people and to have a face for the club,” Co-President of PTK, Stephanie Bushby said.

Fall Fest also featured several free activities for students, including balloon animals, caricatures, and rock climbing. Student Activities also hosted a dance competition with several contestants who performed various dance styles for the students watching.

New this year, in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, there were also different types of Latin dancing lessons for students.

“This year it’s more active and more entertaining. It is awesome to watch the dancing,” L&C sophomore, Jacqi Lane said.

L&C Hosts Banned Book Week Event Darick Earney Associate Editor

Oct. 2 marked the 7th annual Banned Book Week presentation held in the Lewis and Clark Community College library.

This event was held by Liz Burns and Peter Hussey and featured raffles, novel trivia games, and prize giveaways.

Some of the prizes include books, such as “Cut”, “Speak”, and “The Fault in Our Stars”.

Other giveaways included gift boxes filled with Tootsie Pops and bookmarks.

Banned Book Week is a week in which readers can acknowledge, and pay tribute to books that fellow readers have struggled to access to read themselves.

Limited availability is commonly the case of these types of books at local libraries. This is due to upset individuals who feel that reading books that contain

any violence and/or sexual content in them should only be attainable by adults, if at all.

In some cases, such as the Harry Potter series, parents wish for the children not to read anything with magic in it due to their religious beliefs.

Many popular books including “The Perks of Being a Wallflower”, “The Giver”, and “The Hunger Games”, have reached a top 100 list of Frequently Challenged books.

This is a list of novels that readers have and currently attempt to ban from shelves, even decades after its release.

Readers who struggle to keep some of their favorite books in libraries encourage other readers to not allow book banning to keep them from giving new titles a try.

Some banned book advocates feel that these titles, which may include a combination of violent or sexual content, can still enrich readers lives.

“If you’re going to decide

that you don’t like a book, try reading it first to find out,” Burns said.

Associate Professor of Music, Peter Hussey, strongly supports readers having access to these books, believing that children who aren’t given access to some of these novels may suffer in both life, and in their education.

“If we can enlighten people to the fact that censorship does exist in this country of freedom, then we are on our way to stamping out the ignorance. Ignorance leads to fear, fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, and hate leads to suffering,” Hussey said.

"Fashion Police" Star Joan Rivers Tells Last Joke Darick Earney Associate Editor

Sept. 4, 2014, the world said goodbye to comedienne and actress, Joan Rivers. Due to throat surgery complications, Rivers was put into a coma, and passed three days later at age 81.

Rivers’ funeral was held on Sept. 7 in N.Y at the Temple Emanu-El. Many celebrities were in attendance including Kathy Griffin, Kelly Osbourne, and Sarah Jessica Parker.

Melissa, Rivers’ only child, wrote and delivered the eulogy.

Rivers had a reputation in the 80s for her signature style of self-deprecating humor with poking fun at everyday problems. Critics often saw her comedic approach as harsh or brutally honest, two things later incorporated into her TV series, “Fashion Police”.

“Joan River's apparent meanness was only superseded by the intelligence of her insights,” Professor of Art, History of Culture, Jim Price said.

Rivers’ life began June 8, 1933 in Brooklyn, N.Y. as Joan Alexandria Molinksy.

Meyer and Beatrice, Rivers’ parents, were Russian immigrants who influenced her sense of humor growing up.

As a struggling comedian in N.Y., Rivers eventually landed guest appearances on “The Ed Sullivan Show”. “Johnny Carson’s The Tonight Show” hired Rivers as a write per recommendation of comedian Bill Cosby.

"The Flash" and "Arrow" Season Premieres This Oct.

Kelly Rulison Staff Writer

As “Arrow” entered season three on Oct. 8, it is expected to be a better season than the previous ones.

This show works on giving the full backstory of the DC Comic character, Green Arrow, including his time on the abandoned island, as well as how Oliver Queen comes to be called The Arrow.

The shows’ formula follows the “Lost” series with flashbacks to Queen on the abandoned island and the present, in Starling City.

The first season focuses on the villain, Malcolm Merlyn. He is the CEO of Merlyn Global Group and doubles as the dark archer, who is a part of the League of Assassins.

Throughout the first season police consider The Arrow to be a dangerous vigilante that they tirelessly attempt to apprehend.

Season two concentrates on, Slade Wilson, Queen’s mentor while on the abandoned island. Another focus, is Queen becoming known to Starling City as The Arrow instead of The Vigilante.

The season three trailer has given word to the crowd that Ra's al Ghul will be the

next big villain. Ra's al Ghul is the leader of the League of Assassins and will take down anyone who gets in the way of his goals.

Barry Allen is introduced during the second season. Allen’s appearance results in his own spin off show, “The Flash”, which premiered Oct. 7. on the CW. Allen’s mother is killed by a freak accident and his father is convicted of the murder. Since then, Allen has been obsessed with finding out what really happened the night his mother died.

Allen is a CSI investigator who is interested in the particle accelerator, created by Harrison Wells and the S.T.A.R lab team, which is supposed to bring huge advancements in power and medicine.

On the night of the particle accelerator's public unveiling, an explosion occurs, causing a freak storm to happen, which leads to being struck by lightning.

After spending nine months in a coma, Allen develops the ability of super speed.

Central City has an unseen guardian angel as Allen uses this ability for the greater good.

Since Allen came out of the coma, strange phenomenons started happening within Central City, and another meta-

Before Batman, There Was Only Gotham Darick Earney Associate Editor Sept. 22 marked the debut of the all new comic book-based crime series, Gotham. This series provides a fresh take on the origin of how a young, tragedy stricken Bruce Wayne had grown up to become The Batman.

After the Wayne family attend a theater performance, they step out from the back door of an opera house and are held at gunpoint by a local mugger. After a small scuffle, the mugger murders Bruce’s parents and flees the scene.

Burglar Selina Kyle, known only as ‘Cat’, is racing down a fire escape from her latest crime scene when she witnesses the murder.

Another, more important, character appearance is the determined detective, James Gordon.

Serving as the shows’ leading character, Gordon commits himself to track down the killer, and to keep the city safe from all harm.

“Gotham” is different from other TV shows of its kind in that it provides origin stories for each of Batman’s most recognized villains, as

well as add its own original villains.

The first episode introduces a brand new villain to the Batman universe known as Fish Mooney. Mooney is a mob boss and an informant to Gordon’s corrupt partner, Harvey Bullock.

Mooney’s gang is suspected of murder after Mrs.Wayne’s pearl necklace is taken off of the body of a thug by Bullock. After discovering the origins of the necklace, Mooney believes her up-and-coming thug, Oswald Cobblepot (referred to as ‘Penguin’) is trying to frame her.

Also, be sure to watch out for any easter eggs and hints for upcoming characters in the series.

The pilot episode shows a young comedian in a nightclub that viewers are debating on could be a young Jack Napier, who is also known as the Joker. Breastfeeding Mothers of L&C Have New Option Kelly Rulison Staff Writer At the state level, laws have been put into effect to help new mothers handle breastfeeding while also preventing the public from feeling offended by the act itself as well as the exposure of the mother.

Different states have varying laws about breastfeeding in public. Including Illinois, 46 states have laws on breastfeeding that say women are allowed to breastfeed in any public or private location.

Breastfeeding is exempt from public indecency laws in 29 states.

Workplace laws related to breastfeeding have come to pass in 25 states. Laws in 16 states allow breastfeeding mothers to be exempt from jury duty or allow jury service to be postponed.

Five states have implemented or encouraged the development of a breastfeeding awareness education campaign. These laws have helped to give mothers

guidelines on what they can and cannot do in public.

On July 13 of this year, a mother was asked to leave a N.Y. store because she was breastfeeding in public. The next day, she came back with 15 nursing mothers. This was done to show the public that mothers have a right to breastfeed.

Some people aren’t sure what to feel about a woman breastfeeding in public, others know exactly how they feel about it.

“In my whole eight months, and no sign of stopping, no one has said anything to me when I nurse in public. It kind of amazes me because I don't use a cover to nurse,” Chelsea Coad, a full-time mother said. “I always wear an undershirt and a shirt over it to cover my skin.

But for the most part, people see me, I smile at them, and they go about their merry way.”

Some mothers would prefer to avoid any public disturbances

by having a place to go to when they need to breastfeed in public.

“I don’t like people watching me so I never breastfeed in public, besides in my car,” Photography major, Bethany Reynolds said.

Newborn infants need to be fed every two or three hours, making a mother who is trying to keep up with responsibilities like a job, classes, etc., difficult to breastfeed at home only.

Harriet Newell Haskell Still Roaming the Halls?

Darick Earney Associate Editor Normally, people often suspect ghosts of wandering around in graveyards and in the movies, but Lewis and Clark Community College students may find one lurking around in the hallways of the campus.

One ongoing legend that many members of L&C’s staff have told is the ghost of Harriet Newell Haskell.

Going back in history, one may know that Lewis and Clark was originally known as Monticello Female Seminary. Haskell was an educator at Monticello who died of heart failure in 1907, but some professors believe that her spirit still walks among the main complex of L&C. Shortly following her death, Haskell's favorite tree that used to stand by the memorial

Cardinals Are Ready for Red October Dane McGuire Copy Editor After being denied the World Series trophy for the past two years, the third time could be the charm for the St. Louis Cardinals this Oct. Following a dormant 2012 season, St. Louis won both the 2013 National League Central Division title and were also National League champions that year. These smaller achievements are something for manager Mike Matheny to build on, just two years into his regime.

With an 80-64 win-loss record as of Sept. 9, the Cardinals are once again on top of their division.

The Redbirds still have to worry about the Los Angeles Dodgers and Washington Nationals in the race for the NL’s top spot.

World Series in 2011, they have been the best team in September, with a 58-29 win-loss record during that time to prove it.

Lewis and Clark Community College Lady Trailblazers Soccer Team Ranked 1st Nationally Dane McGuire Copy Editor Summer sports like baseball are entering their final month, but things are just heating up at Lewis and Clark Community College as winter approaches.

The Lady Trailblazers finished last season with a 19-2 win-loss record and are the defending National Junior College Athletic Association Division I Region 24 Champions.

The team appears to be on course to repeat this accomplishment with a 11-2-1 win-loss-tie record as of Sept. 28, with ten wins being shutouts.

Throughout the entirety of their season up to Sept. 28, the women have allowed only eight goals against them.This feat has been managed despite having a number of injuries,

which resulted in open tryouts to keep the team whole.

The list of setbacks included four ACL injuries, a concussion, a partial ACL tear, as well as mental wear and tear that accompanied the battle wounds.

"We were able to add a couple of players that we knew played in high school and that were going to school here. We were counting on some of these girls to be everyday starters but that’s the way it goes sometimes and I think we have adjusted pretty well,” Coach Tim Rooney said.

The Trailblazers rallied from the injuries and the toughest part of the schedule which resulted in their only losses and tie. Following this defeated streak, the squad started recouping some of its losses with an 11-0 win against Lincoln.

“I thought and still think during

that streak, we were playing extremely well together given the circumstances of all the injuries.

We just all play as a team and want to win. Going into these past two games, we needed those wins. So we played together and did what we had to do,” Forward and Middle Forward, Nicole Howard said.

L&C is ranked 1st nationally, according to the NJCAA as of Oct. 2. Miriam Taylor, Howard, and Michelle Pedersen all have spots in the NJCAA Top 10 individual player rankings as well.
