BATSTATEU PROPOSE NON-SUICIDE CONTRACT; CONTRACT PROVIDES COUNSELLING By: Merwin Samarita

After the rise of students’ suicide case in the Philippines brought by the new platform of learning, Batangas State University filed a non-suicide contract that offers individual or group counseling to prevent suicide.

The proposal of the contract was one of the strategy and intervention of the University’s Office of Guidance and Counseling that will use as a tool for clientele who is at risk and experiencing suicidal attempts.

According to the experienced of the office, the use of a non-suicide contract with counseling helps to prevent suicide since the clientele that undergoes counseling wants to help.

University Office of Guidance and Counseling stated in the press statement

last September 27,”The purpose of this non-suicide contract is to assist the clientele to establish a mindset that it is not okay to commit suicide. Moreover, the contracts provide the identified user with a constructive avenue to see the reality that he/she is responsible to take care of his/ her life to rebuild his/her self-esteem as an essential part of coping.”

“When used, the document with the personal information of clients is confidential under privacy rule,” the office added.

On their last statement said, “The office will remain true to its mandates, as it constantly seeks ways to improve its processes and mechanism in the service of the Red Spartan Community.”

Breakthrough 2020: Gears up Red Spartans Amidst Pandemic

atangas State University (BSU) upheld the first webinar series organized by the University Student Council (USC) to prepare Red Spartans in adapting the new education system due to CoViD-19.

According to Dr. Tirso A. Ronquillo, University President, “We cannot be limited by this pandemic. We should pursue our discussion. We should pursue our learning.”

“I am amazed by the program that you [University Student Council] prepared for this webinar series. I hope that all of our students will be connected and be hook to this webinar series," he added.

Breakthrough 2020 kicked off as Mr. Luisito Nario, Events and Project Manager of LTN Events Digital, tackled UTILIZATION 101: How to Maximize the Students’ Resources Amidst Crisis, how the pandemic disrupted reality and emphasized the importance of becoming the drivers of life on the first session.

“Even superpower economies are now

struggling to revive industries, [because] nobody is prepared, even if they have a contingency plan,” Nario said.

Meanwhile, Dr. Kristoffer Conrad M. Tejada reminded that amidst the current pandemic, there are many things to learn, unlearn, and relearn, and now is the perfect time to show patience, resilience, passion, and compassion.

Moreover, Dr. Lucille D. Evangelista, Director of Student Affairs and Services of BSU discussed the theme “We Can, We Will, We Conquer: Strategies Practices for Online Learners” that includes misconceptions and challenges of online learning and emphasized the strategies that the students can do to survive this new learning system.

“By being organized, proactive, and having self-awareness, you can get most of your online classes. [So] take your skills to the next level,” Dr. Evangelista said.

Developing these skills will surely generate Red Spartans to find this mode of

learning as an excellent alternative to the traditional classroom setting.

Meanwhile, Coach Rayniel Emerson De Villa, Campus Director of Victory Church in Batangas City, led the third session - FAITHING: Instilling Strength By Evangelism, as he introduced the Every Nation Campus of the Campus Missionary of Victory Church, a global movement that empowers students in the area of Leadership, Integrity, Faith,

and Excellence.

“Do not fight alone. It may be the worst season for all of us but it can [also] be the season for our maturity. [The] best season for all of us,” Coach Rayniel impelled.

Another highlight of the story was the last session revolved on online as an opportunity and encouragement for the students to keep in mind heated by Jan Angelique "Coach Lyqa" Maravilla, a Registered Psychometrician, and Educational Content Creator and Motivational Speaker.

“We will not be remembered for the things we can or we can’t do. What matters more is what we actually do,” Coach Lyqa mentioned.

Meanwhile, Daniella Cuevas from BSU Main 1 hosted the four sessions in the webinar series, Aug. 15, 18, 20, and 22, 10 AM-12 PM. The webinar series was held via Zoom and live-streamed on the official Facebook Page of USC BSU, still available for viewing.

SHFC Oks Taal Eruption Victims’ Housing Project By: Tricel Anne Yutuc

S

ocial Housing Finance Corporation (SHFC) and Batangas Provincial Government formally agreed to the implementation of a housing project for affected families of the recent eruption of Taal Volcano.

The housing project is expected to help 255 families from the Municipalities of Nasugbu, Tuy, and Balete.

Meanwhile, Mr. Ronel Del Rio led the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in a virtual ceremony, Aug.10. https://www.facebook.com/OKA.The.LASER

Provincial Administrator Levi Dimaunahan and representatives of the Housing Division of the provincial government attended the said ceremony.

SHFC, the designated government agency that funds different housing programs will be allocating the capital in purchasing the land, site development, and the actual construction of Kapitbahay Homeowners’ Association and Tambakan Homeowners’ Association through its flagship initiative, the Community Mortgage Program (CMP).

SHFC had also agreed with 93 local government units, wherein 18 new partners were added this year.

Batangas Governor Dodo Mandanas along with the SHFC President Arnolfo Ricardo Cabling headed the said project.

The agency continues to give houses to people in need as help, mainly in this time of pandemic where people are advised to stay at home.

TaNgLaW Spearheads Virtual Gawad-Parangal 2020

Tagapagtaguyod ng Literatura at Wika (TangLaW) – JPLPC Malvar conducted the first ever Virtual Gawad-Parangal in the celebration of Buwan ng Wika 2020, Aug.28, 4 pm.

Following the established Presidential Proclamation No. 1041, s. 1997, Batangas State University JPLPC-Malvar joins the annual Language Month celebration with the theme “Wika ng Kasaysayan, Kasaysayan ng Wika, Ang mga Katutubong Wika sa Maka-Filipinong Bayanihan Kontra Pademya."

It aims to encourage every household Bayanihan to stop the continued spread of COVID-19 in the country and extend Filipino and native language.

Duterte grants Pemberton a Pardon, Pemberton flies back to US

According to Dr. Amado C. Gequinto, Dean of Colleges, “Nawa ang tema sa Buwan ng Wika ay magsilbing gabay upang patuloy na maisagawa ang maka-Filipinong layunin kontra pandemya at makakatulong upang makaiwas sa CoViD-19 na ating nararanasan sa kasalukuyan”.

John Scott Pemberton, who was convicted for homicide after killing a Filipino transgender woman Jennifer Laude in 2014 came back to the United States after the absolute pardon granted by President Rodrigo Duterte.

President Duterte decided to give an absolute pardon to Pemberton under Good Conduct Time Allowance (GCTA) law considering his good character because there is no record for Pemberton’s misbehaved.

Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said that the decision of the President is for the national interest of the Philippines to the US during this pandemic and for the vaccine that may be invented by the foreign countries.

According to Roque,”Bagama’t tayo po ang tumayong abogado ng pamilyang Laude, kung ang ibigsabihin naman nyan ay lahat ng Pilipino ay magkakaroon ng vaccine, kung ang mga amerikano ay nakadevoloped wala po akong problema.”

On Wednesday, Police said that they received information from Barangay officials of Sabang in Tuy, Batangas that the suspects were throwing toxic waste into the stream in Barangay Bayudbud at 4:30 pm that came from manufacturers of soaps that Cabrera own.

Academic Freeze The LASER finds it practical to pursue academic freeze amidst the pandemic.

CoViD-19 pandemic greatly affects the education system of all universities. Consequently, there is a new normal called and online classes are implemented.

Most of the students experienced difficulty, distress in the new set of education. Mainly, students happened to suffer due to the poor reception of signal and incompatibility with the use of gadgets.

Meanwhile, students endured pressure to comprehend the lessons that leads to not inclusive earned learning. Also, students go on an uncomfortable environment for learning due to household responsibility and uncontrollable distraction caused by using gadgets.

Online classes are not applicable and effective to all. It should not follow the majority’s mean to engage with virtual classes. How about the students who cannot participate in the class? What will happen to them? In agreement with a news report, a 20-year-old student suffered a motorcycle accident on her way home. The student from Capiz was then declared dead due to her attained injuries caused by her trip to search for better reception for her academic requirements to be submitted.

Students tend to attend the online class only aim to be not left behind. With this, it is not an effective way to gain all-inclusive learning.

Moreover, both teachers and students have to undergo adjustments and changes in education.

Meanwhile, online classes opened a gateway to foresee the possibility due to innovation in education like the student who can work, study, and live. It also lets the students continue their studies and still acquired learning.

This online class also lessen the expenses of the students. Now, students will not spend money on transportation, food, and school necessities because they are at home. They will only pay for internet bills or load.

it would be nice if from the start one’s willingness to improve research paper and students to produce one’s desired beneficial output is clearly stated and suggested as soon as possible.

D

ue to the CoViD-19 pandemic, most of the systems are utilized online or virtually. The fear to be infected by the virus let everything stop, not even for a moment but for a long time, the things that we are used to doing. We can say that the new normal is also the virtual normal. In line with the education setting, virtual learning is also applied. Meanwhile, Research or doing a thesis paper is one of the course subjects that the students needed to comply with, especially even in this time of crisis. A course subject that is much needed to insert effort and courage by a Red Spartan student.

Within two and a half months of doing a research paper, I together with my co-researchers have been experienced defended some part of our research paper virtually for the second time, Title and Chapter 1-3 defense. It was difficult for me because of the internet signal, set up (virtual defense), and mainly changes of plans. May I ask? Is it still possible for the approved part of the research paper to be changed? Why?

However, The Laser Group of Publications believe that an academic freeze is the most convenient way to address the complaints of the students. Besides, the academic freeze will not close the door for learning since most of the students do self-study in the online class.

The university should empathize with the young's current state, position, and standing, and assure each student and teacher that they would not turn a blind eye to an efficient and effective alternative that would benefit all which is Academic Freeze. It would serve as a pause, a break, and a rest, not a hindrance nor halt to the 'hope of the country's' education. Notably, it never hurts to take a break every once in a while, especially, amid a health crisis.

Comprising output in doing a research paper is one of the greatest and fulfilling accomplishments for both researchers and teachers. This experience will highlight the essence of all preparation and hard work of doing a research paper. These will also prove that despite the adjustments, researchers can provide benefits from their research paper as well as a teacher can help and support the researcher in doing so. Moreover, the output would serve as a guide for other future researchers with their related researches and used for other academic purposes.

However, it would be nice if from the start one’s willingness to improve research paper and students to produce one’s desired beneficial output is clearly stated and suggested as soon as possible. This way we hit two birds with one stone: produce the output and make them beneficial, and prevent researchers to be shocked by the sudden changes.

In my opinion, we should consider the student’s effort in accomplishing their research paper. The things that have been approved are the things that hoping not to change. As a future educator, we must know the student’s situation likewise to the circumstances we have right now. Moreover, research defense is a way of how student’s researches to criticize constructively and improved. A way on how the student researchers know to treat their paper next time.

Everything is well planned and approved and suddenly changes happened. As I see it, it would be hard for a student to deal with the sudden changes. It would be hard for them to the point that they notice and observe that they will back from the start. All the effort and courage to accomplish the research paper unexpectedly came to nothing. The thing is a student had no choice but to adapt to sudden changes.

I appreciate the eagerness of wanting one’s research paper to improve and to be well done. I am also grateful for the time that one’s allotted just to fruitfully assess the research paper. In this way, comments and suggestions are given. I furthermore recognize the goal of encompassing the output of the students in this time of new normal setting in education.

We value the knowledge and the quality of education yet we sometimes forget to value our health.

n education, we are becoming used to a new situation and continuously adapting to what's in front of us. Once we enrolled, we have no choice. I have no choice.

Both synchronous and asynchronous learning was implemented in this academic year, 2020-2021.

Consequently, some teachers are always using video conferences during their period and some are just giving modules and pre-recorded lectures to let us handle our own time.

In fact, it is just alright as long as the teachers are being considerate in the date of submission of the activities and if some students can't attend lectures because of the lackness of internet connection or other personal reasons. On the other hand, are we obliged to make our weekends weekdays?

It's easy to say "Kung ayaw gawin, huwag," "Bakit 'di mo tapusin agad?" No one wants to fail and we all

want to comply in all the activities. We have eight to nine courses to attend in a week and I don't know why there are teachers who are giving more than two long activities in just a day.

Yes, some teachers are allotting a longer time of submission but how can we do other household chores while also doing activities for the other courses?

I am lucky enough to have more considerate teachers than those who are not but still, I'm having a hard time doing my responsibilities as a student, as a daughter, and as an 'ate' at the same time amidst health and financial crisis. What more for those who have more responsibilities than I? Not to mention those who have mental health problems.

We are all adjusting and coping with this new scheme. We value the knowledge and the quality of education yet we sometimes forget to value our health.

Let's all take a rest once in a while.

W

e are now facing a COVID-19 pandemic in which students barred from entering schools. For this reason, the last physical class that took place at Batangas State University JPLPC-Malvar was also a few months ago.

Due to the proliferation of COVID-19 Pandemic cases, the government declared a lockdown that lasted two and a half months of Enhanced Community Quarantine.

For students to not be left behind, schools have to adapt to the new normal, where the implementation of online classes is applied instead of face-to-face learning. As a student, it was difficult to just now experience how challenging it is to learn if you can only see your instructor discussing on-line.

It has been a year since Batangas State University had an online enrollment system. Students will not be able to enroll if you do not pay the necessary fees at the University. The class officially opened on August 24, 2020, where we did not have to pay the standard payment setting before enrolling. But a few weeks later, it was announced that there would be a payment to be made for the SSC Fee and Society fee. So, what else are the fees for? No one is going to school while there are no scheduled events this semester.

You can only pay by transferring money to the e-wallet.

As I had experienced before, if you do not pay these fees, the online enrollment system may be locked by the Society and you will need to settle it to access your online enrollment dashboard. But what if a student does not have an e-wallet? And how can they fill it if the cash-in counters are far from them?

On the other hand, it is good to know that we have classmates who are willing to help, who have active and verified e-wallets, where they use it to pay for various needs. The setting will be “Paloadan mo ako, magtra-transfer ako ng pera". As students, we do not want to miss our name on the list of payers. But, if this is not the method of payment, then this process is probably complete.

It would be nice to have a survey first, to find out who has an active and verified e-wallet before charging membership fees. It is difficult to make money now, and the money that is going to collect is not small. Hopefully, there will be an announcement first so that students know where they will use the fees collected.

Unfair Mateo Granzore Bachelor of Science in Business Administration Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, our education system changes a lot from face-to-face learning to e-learning like online classes either asynchronous or synchronous online learning.

As I enter this academic year, I’ve experienced a lot of changes in our education system, since we cannot be able to attend classes in the normal way of face-to-face - the only way to learn is to adapt to the new normal type of schooling. Through online classes, I’ve seen that although it possesses the normal way of teaching – the problem is how credible would be the outcome of this wherein the classes are only done virtually.

Before this pandemic, the way to measure the authenticity of every student is through personal observations done by teachers. Now that we are in online classes, how can it be measured since teachers cannot observe students in a normal way?

The problem arising from this online class is the issue of students having multiple devices used for searching answers on the exam. Since teachers use Google Forms to provide an exam, they cannot observe

if someone else is cheating.

It becomes an issue because it penetrates cheating behavior of students as well as it becomes an encouragement to do the same - which will be unfair to those who are studying harder. If that happens, the essence of reviewing will lost – and all students will only depend on their gadgets. To solve this problem – is to assess if the student understands the lessons by having recitation at the end of every lesson.

In that way, students will be equipped with learning and will be able to understand deeply the context of the discussion.

Aside from that is the favoritism of teacher or to what they call them “teacher’s pet”. Since, it is an online class where we cannot meet our teacher personally – the favour of the teacher is to who s/he knows personally and will only call a certain student in a recitation because that student has a stable internet connection. But, I am not against that - what I am concerned about is the biases because as a student we want a fair and square treatment – and we don’t want to make ourselves ask for attention. To teachers, I advise that they must know

how to balance and treat every student fairly without any biases.

The point of this is to make awareness especially because it was grade that will reflect –any sort of unfairness will be a cause of mental problems to a person who is aiming for justice. After all, it’s not about how good we are right now – but the learning and experiences we will gain from this academic year.

The only way to overcome these issues - is to give our minds a healthy thinking habit and continue holding on. Study hard – because there is no better future if you won’t let yourself learn.

At the end of the day, what matters is to SURVIVE this online class and continue to keep reaching our dream…

We have to admit the reality that it is hard to learn and cope with the lesson when there are a lot of hindrances like having an unstable internet connection. Our eagerness to learn is slowly turning into a blurry dream. We are begging for equity and hoping that there is no student left behind.”

Nicole Ruth Recto BSIT “Online learning is difficult especially for students who quickly run out of mobile data and do not have much money. It is also a hassle for students because there are times when you have to focus on your cell phone in the whole day and sit down. We need to

As for the academic freeze, I think it is better to continue this school year because even though it really hard for others we must seek for a solution and it will be difficult for us if this year will be delayed because of the Pandemic.”

Mental Health problems arise due to the existence of the Pandemic brought by Covid’19, and one of these aspects is education that puts students in a virtual platform for learning.

Regards to these are the continuous problems with the mental health of the students as distress from their environment affects their social behavior and mental health but then a no-suicide contract unfolds on the internet that alarms not just students but the parents and citizen who were shocked to see how they attend to students psychological well being.

No-suicide contracts simply oblige and put the responsibility for one’s mental health in their own hands, putting such pressure to deny the suicidal thoughts of a person. Though we can say that the contract is given only to those who were part of a session and not directly requiring students to fill-up the contract form, it indeed was still alarming.

The trust itself is yielded upon the professionals who are very educated in such situations and knowing that the help we seek will be fulfilled by them is already a good assurance for our mental health yet how can assurance exist if the responsibility itself is bestrewn upon us?

Meanwhile, those who’ll be seeing the contract for the first time might have doubted the professionals’ capacity to help them with the problem they are currently engaged with as the dependability on keeping them alive is not encouraging.

The fact that the responsibility on this matter shouldn’t be on one side and must be shared by the client and the professional is a good factor of the no-suicide contract as they were both engaged in taking such actions but then we are triggered that this might lead students to something more serious than the problem itself as we have the full responsibility for our life, and to know that we seek help as we cannot fight alone in a battle is how destructive nosuicide contract could be, a struggle itself with the addition of pressure from the agreement.

This has been good that addressing mental health became a priority in universities or even outside its premises but The LASER believes that they should also look for the most appropriate approach that the students can be comfortable in dealing with their mental health problems.

A

s the country embarks on the transition to online classes, the same strict instruction and regulation still applies, but does it have to? A 21-year-old 3rd Year College Student studying at Bohol Island State University (BISU) Clarin Campus succumbed to taking his life by hanging due to denied submission of module requirements.

Allegedly, his instructor refused to take his assignment due to late submission that caused his dismay. His father discovered his lifeless body on October 6, 2020, at 10 in the morning whereas police reported that he committed suicide on October 5, 2020, after participating in an online class. Autopsy result confirmed that there was no ‘foul play’ or coercion in the incident, but strangulation in the neck per se. This indicates that the act was spontaneous, and no one other than the victim inflicted the pain that eventually resulted in his death. On another note, his parents shared with the authorities that before their son's suicide, he told them he needed a laptop to cope with the online class setting, but because of financial difficulties, they weren't able to provide him one.

In my perspective, not everyone is prepared for this new education scheme where teachers and students meet, virtually, instead of the traditional mode just for the continuity of the scholar calendar. Some have to compromise just to make ends meet as students, teachers, and parents to ensure their students and their children are not only able but capable, as well, of engaging effectively in distant learning. This indicates that certain rules of tradition may have to be adjusted and modified. Thus, it is only plausible that showing consideration is a must! Otherwise, it would lead to circumstances just like that of the 3rd Year College Student Suicide Case which is dreadful and could have been resolved in a sense. If only his work had been accepted and deductions have been made by his professor, then he wouldn't have become devastated to the extent that he would commit such horrid.

In these trying times, lives have been changed and modified, so should the protocols that were once strictly followed and practiced in face-to-face environments. For it is during these situations that we must employ at our disposal the sense of compassion, integrity, and empathy for everyone to cope and to live on. If students were to be handed out modules, they are to furnish and to submit it. If teachers received the accomplished modular papers, they are to accept it, whether or not, it was long overdue. Reducing marks should be the only option for the instructors if students were not able to comply with the deadline.

Indeed, not everyone is prepared for the new setting of education for it necessitated devices and Internet Access on a dire level. However, no matter how accessible these may be to students, given they are born in the modernized age, giving them considerations for their emotional and mental health, coping mechanisms and hardships would never make an individual any less of a professional.

Taking online classes has become a reality, though it is not just your typical view of what reality is, but the actuality that you have to buckle up for with techniques and essentials for you to effectively conquer and win over.

As the Philippines engage in online education via digital instruction and material, students tend to experience stress and pressure on a higher level which may come from loads of schoolwork or lack of resources in the comfort of their homes as stated by a study.

With all the online class meetings to attend, and requirements needed to be submitted on time, it is imperative and plausible that a student is well-equipped with devices and gadgets that are considered necessities in these trying times.

Though before you do a reality check of your equipment, make sure you are wellarmed on the inside by knowing or having these requirements:

Laptop or Personal Computer Your smartphone may be starting to malfunction that's why a Laptop or Personal Computer would do you best. It doesn't have to be brand new nor state-of-the-art, but simply functional and available for your online class attendance and learning needs. Having a Laptop or PC would turn your engagement in digital discussions more convenient as you grasp concepts from a bigger screen compared to that of a Smartphone. Far North Escape: An Exhilarating Virtual Expedition to Batanes D

o you still remember those vintage films that are used to be on screen having the concept of old castles, green pastures, and simple lifestyles?

If yes, then we're both on the same page. You see, I have also been a fan of anything classic for I am fascinated to know how they aesthetically look and produce big impacts on those who would by chance witness its beauty.

The feeling of having your skin being caressed by the sunlight in the morning, fresh air to breathe, and animals that you can hear nearby are just way too good to experience; don't get me wrong, city lights also stun me but I do believe that being with nature now and then is a one of a kind. After all, province life is a worthy Emprise anybody could have.

This year has been a lot stressful for all of us, since a pandemic outbreak is happening, travel tours are not advisable but since everything can be done on a virtual set up why don’t we just sit back, relax, and enjoy one of a kind virtual tour escape in the far north?

Animo'y tunay na paglalakbay sa Dulong Hilaga On the northernmost province of the Philippines, there lies the most beautiful island in the country, Batanes. It is called the home of the wind for the distinct air coming in one place on the Island. Even if it is the smallest province in the country, we cannot deny the scenic structures of the lands which reside on it.

As Buaron, Dave Ryan described the island at the website of tourism-philippines.com, "You can see the fields that look like a labyrinthine patchwork of green bordered by tall hedgerows of grass, reeds, piled stones and trees which serve as a crop protection from the fierce winds, and typhoons which commonly pass near the islands as well as huge waves that crash into dramatic cliffs and rocks that just out into the ocean, which undoubtedly look incredibly similar to the English moors and Scottish Highlands with a Filipino twist."

He directly traveled to the Island and describe it all in his blog where many can take a look so that they will be oriented to it when they go. He also provided some details like what to eat, bring, and go-to places. Batanes is also consist of three habitable Island namely: Batan, Itbayat, and Sabtang. Others are already unhabitable. The Island has sometimes really strong waves that can be dangerous and a reason why many tourists have a hard time stepping on the island.

Marlboro Country Hills Escaping all the stress we had, we deserve a getaway to this place. Let me just quickly tour you in this paradise.

As the virtual scenery gives, The “Malboro Country Hills or Rakuh a Payaman" were described by lots of people to be similar to the country of New Zealand where the green pastures are relaxing to view. Those hills are just simply pastures of Ivatan People who are the residences of the island. Since the island is located at the very end of the country, you can see from there the most issued island, the West Philippine Sea where the best spot to view it, is on the Vayang rolling hills.

This place is known to have huge waves that directly crashes on its shorelines. But then if you want to take a dip, there is the Homoron Blue Lagoon with its gentle waves and the famous Morong Beach which is a very Instagramworthy place. The Santo Domingo Cathedral is the first church built on the island which many tourists also take sight of its prestigious construction. All the best shots from the drone can practically see the view from above which is highlighted more the beauty of the said Island.

Aside from the best spot, they have also delicious delicacies that will surely fill up the stomach of every traveler just like the traditional Ivatan rice meal or what they call “Vunong” or “Kapayvunong” in Ivatan meaning “Pagsasalo.”

As a student, I wonder how much would it cost me to take me to this paradise, worry no more because you can fly and experience it with all proper sales and book a flight as low as 3,000 pesos. Make sure to bring enough pocket money and save some of your allowances from time to time to check this out from your bucket travel list. Ivatan people are known as the fishermen and farmers of the land. They manage to live on just simple island life, far away from the noise of the city their type of living is very peaceful. That explains why they are so kind and welcoming because they have established a good treatment for their fellowmen. Their old stone houses that are very durable to any typhoon symbolizes all their hardships in living on their island with the right amount of bravery and a strong personality that can overcome storms in life.

Right on the Island of Batanes is where Mavulis or Y’Ami located which is known as the “Lonely Island” very few people can go there but it has been the base of many soldiers of the Philippines that are monitoring the West Philippines sea from foreign Invaders. It is known to be only 305 kilometers away from the country of Taiwan.

You see, there are lots of instances that our land wants to be captivated by many other countries even in the past decades, and knowing that we have this kind of beauty for ourselves is that something we should appreciate and truly value. For the place that is being held by ours, payoffs a great amount of knowledge and refinement unto us.

Katsa: Putting Old to New Fashion by: Vernalyn Montero

Some of us are used to having a cup of coffee in the morning, sit in a comfortable place, crossed-legs, while watching how trees dance with their leaves. Our eyes would reach multiple dimensions and we can tell how far a certain place had transformed.

Change is inevitable, but we can always look back to how things had started, just like how you hold on to the bittersweet memories of your past. As most of us believe, the happiest and worthiest of all is always just the beginning, and I guess, that is the reason why we tend to always seek of going back to where we all started.

It is relaxing and kind of nostalgic to imagine how simple our lives before; from the tools we used when we were babies up to the days we listened to the tales of Lola Basyang, less pollution, and chemicals. Can I ask you what brand of diapers you once used? Mine doesn't have a brand name and it can be used several times. Sounds gross, wasn't it? But no, it's not! I once used flour sacks or "katsa" as my diaper, "lampin" as what they named it. Why not? Before, we can find it anywhere since it can be used in other ways and gladly, one of the Palawan-based companies unveiled a clothing line made of "katsa" last September - the Ba'law Clothing.

Cast One's Mind Back to Young Days AraPilak company is an advocate of eco-friendly fashion with three groups of farmers as the workers. It aims for environmental sustainability by making products out of repurposed materials to lessen the carbon footprint.

The Katsa Editions During this time where we all are in the comfort of our home, it is better to use our time wisely; teach ourselves, acquire new ideas, and discover things. Flour sacks or katsa can be used in several ways. What a memory when you also once tried to wear a katsa diaper.

Why not go and check the nearest bakery or fabric stores near you? Just wear a mask or else authorities are going to catch you.

Aside from using flour sacks as a fabric, we used in embroidering for our TLE project back in high school, we can also use them as kitchen tools, first aids, and a useful thing in every corner of our home.

Flour sacks can be a piece of baking equipment in our kitchen: covering a dough when we make delicious ubecheese pandesal, a towel that can drain any baking tools, a refrigerator cover, an apron, and a storage bag. It can also be used in an injured arm or other body parts as support.

And of course, this can be cheap yet unique fashion by making clothes out of it.

Instead of buying in the market, utilize every resource we have. Katsa may look out of style so bring out the best in you and be creative! Amid this catastrophe, it's better to spend on something for various purposes. A Katsa can provide a livelihood to everyone, look what AraPilak got.

Aside from their advocacy to use eco-friendly materials, they also want to bring back the old days of Filipinos. They are creating diapers, handkerchiefs, curtains, and of course, clothes out of katsa. Being resourceful is one of the best characteristics of the Filipino, that's why some of the parents before had used lampin or katsa as a diaper, towel, and blanket for their newborn babies.

Nostalgia in White Dust: The Tragic Tale of Manila Bay

hen I was a child, I used to love this instant mac n' cheese noodles that I would literally eat every afternoon while watching the show “Blue’s Clues” on the television. It was the good old days back then which reminds me of what is now happening to the then highly regarded place in the Philippines – Manila Bay.

White sand Project Years of abuse from irresponsible people have taken its toll at such a point where the place was being scrutinized to a pollution hotspot. It became so filthy and disgusting. No one in their right mind would find swimming in that murky waters surrounded by floating waste and say that it is satisfyingly a nice place for travellers. Hereafter, the Department of Health (DOH) released a statement in 2019 which warned the public to dispel any ideas of going for a splash until it's deemed "safe" for recreational swimming. It was also last year when the government decided to take proper actions against the obvious problem.

an estimated 5000 participants eager to participate in the clean-up of the esteros. Over the next few months that followed were the dedicated government efforts to rehabilitate this harbor. We appreciate what they've done so far. All in all, it was a step towards the right direction.

But who knows? It's still a waste of money considering the situation we all are currently in.

Picking up the pieces Returning back from this round-trip of mine, the latest white sand project, however, is a huge step for the beautification of Manila Bay. Out of all the things, using a large amount of money to spread and fill the shores of Manila Bay with crushed dolomite. It's similar to cleaning a dirty room by sweeping waste and dust under the rug and stuffing everything else under the closet.

I remember older generations bragging how beautiful it was when they were younger. Its crystal-clear water can substitute a mirror and offer a refreshing swim for anyone.

No wonder why it used to be one of the world's bests. Not only that, it is also the reason why Manila is the capital of the Philippines. This natural harbor is placed strategically so that it could effortlessly support commerce between our country and our neighbor countries. For instance, the

Manila-Acapulco galleon trade, way back 1593 to 1815.

Too dreadful that what remains for us now were none like that.

They allotted ₱390 million budget in the middle of a pandemic for the said project and to reconstruct the old bay. President Rodrigo Duterte said it was actually a remarkable plan. He believes that despite the logical evidence pointing to the contrary. Beside him, there's also the Presidential spokesperson, Harry Roque, claiming that it would be beneficial for our mental well-being, and the DENR Undersecretary Benny Antiporda who believed that it will lessen littering.

Looking at my old-time favorite mac n cheese, it makes me wonder, what if they chose to adjust it a little bit and not to completely rebrand it? Especially, what my childhood self and other children that time used to live by the original flavor they once endorsed.

Manila Bay is truly unfortunate. It used to be something great not just in its appearance, but also in its usefulness.

Now it became a mockery of its past self, inexplicably stuck between the hands of greed and indecency. It seems like the dream of returning back to its former glory is rather slim.

Forced Stagnancy and Retrogression: A Displeasing Greet to a Sudden Era Article By: Marie Dominique Oña & John Carlo T. De Ocampo | Artwork by: Venessa Mendoza Life has changed into something distant that no one had ever expected that things would occur the way it currently is. All of a sudden, everything feels like a fantasy movie, and no one, literally no one, got any other choice but to deal with it. There was even an instance where people even made a humorous twist that there maybe someone out there playing a game which originated in the movie, “Jumanji.” Neither less, our concept of reality has altered.

Lingering Sensation of the Past People had enough of what is going on this year of 2020. They were then anxious about being disrupted of their ready-made plans and goals, most were confused about why such a thing did happen, while others were just simply mad because they had either lost their jobs or forced to postponed a big event in their lives. We never know the same feeling; the only thing which we're certain about was that this year, is filled mainly with challenges and that the most invitingly provocative part was being disordered by the pandemic. It did stand as the game-changer where everyone must upset their lives for a pause in a snap of a moment. I just wanted to refrain that all these things were happening and all these crises were just a nightmare and I would be glad if I or us, could escape it and choose other options instead.

These immediate changes lead us to something where we are obligated to slowly cope. As the world continues to spin in whatever form or situation is, it is always the person who needs to adjust and go along. We don’t have any choice. We are not capable or entitled to change how the world wants to circulate, the only thing that we have control of is within our own lives.

As a student, my daily routine begins with waking up, drinking water, eating breakfast, taking a shower, to make things concise, getting ready for school. Apart from this daily habit, now that there is a disease running on around and almost all of us were in an isolation; my mind would always tend to be all over the place. Unlike the old routines, I don’t quite think of school anymore or worry that I might miss my class or forgot to bring a project from home. The old, daily routine had changed into something new. It became waking up at midday, having my first meal in the afternoon, browsing through my social media until dawn, tried to read at least one chapter of a book that just won't do, eat dinner, wash, and then go to sleep. There is nothing much going on and I am fully aware that I should make it somehow productive or worthy. But before you judge me of tardiness, it’s just that no one owes anyone in this time of crisis. You can still communicate with your friends by choice, do those workouts which you're always thinking of, and whatever the rest still lay on your hand. This is indeed a matter of surviving but everyone has their ways of figuring it all out.

It is a snap of change. No one had warned us of having this new normal while simply crossing the roads right after their works or classes. Even newscasters or experts had never totally predicted that this might happen. It is just a reminder that life is short and surprising and that we should live with it until the day for it to say its farewell.

Reality Check Just imagine me right now. I should be in my newest pair of crop top and high waist jeans with black shoes but instead, here am I, with my old pair of baggy jogging pants, hoody, and mask on, picking up our daily supply of food from a long line at the grocery store that has started almost at the entrance of the mall. And just when I thought life could not get any harder. It suddenly does.

Let me also enumerate some other things besides your daily routine that has changed since the pandemic started.

Transportation has been tough where you should endure the heat throughout the ride inside that small space surrounded by plastic to maintain not interacting with other people. You should always bring your ID or a “Quarantine Pass” to ensure your safety. You, your friends, or whatever you call your relationship to another person is, are not allowed to touch intimately or hug them outside when you see them because everyone must maintain a distance from each person. Travel plans are highly prohibited and canceled.

Mass gatherings are also not allowed which means that the most awaited events are either, did not really go according to plan or has already been canceled. Mostly, too many lives and jobs are gone in that spur-of-moment. The virus chooses no one.

Manufacturing Company of food and other necessities has grown in high grossing sales due to millions of people's demand. It might be good news for them, but bad news for those people who are frantically buying their usual needs caused by the crisis. Grocery store shelves suddenly closed. Everything is a matter of survival and if you do belong to those people who strive every day to barely impose food to eat, you sure are missing the rotation of the world. Schools, restaurants, salons, and even your favorite go-to places were officially closed. We are stuck in isolation where we must keep our distance from each and everyone or have a barrier to communicate for us to somehow feel that we're all still connected.

Flashes of Hope Our emotions are heightened up to what is happening. Anxiety, depression, and fear will all rumble up in one place inside our heads. Let’s just give it in because in a normal situation it is a big deal of adjustments for all of us to take a big leap in our lives. Today is different because the fast phasing moment of our lives has suddenly changed. There is no notice or warning and having those emotions inside are just a way of reacting to an abrupt moment.

When you go outside, you will see a lot of people wearing different types of masks.

There barely are any people rushing towards their businesses that everyone used to notice.

There are only a few people who walk fast for they do need to cross the road before the stoplight turns red or the need to force oneself in a tiny seat on a jeepney ride for you have no other choice but to hurry in your class. Not everyone today has a busy morning or cold nights because you are stuck in traffic on your way home. Some people had already grown their hair too much and either, they are getting fat or skinny. Today, everyone is busy minding their businesses inside their own house. But remember that even though we're all under isolation; we'll all still be together with this.

It may seem like a pause or a quick break from this fast phasing life we once had knocking from above. We should not lose hope for there are still a lot of people who believe that everything will soon end. 'Change is the only thing that is constant.' It is one of the most famous phrases you may hear but it is indeed a fact and can be very timely.

Problems may take a while to slowly be solved, so take that every strength you still have, try to do that workout you always are planning on doing, take the opportunity to grow again, stare at your bedroom ceiling until you decide to stand up on your own for God-knows-how-long and you'll, later on, realize that bright sky's no rare. And so does seeing a ray of hope of all these intriguingly-insane phenomena we're all currently in.

Meanwhile, BSU speeds up the shift to digital ad electronic means of reaching out to its stakeholders to provide new ways to deliver academic services amidst the pandemic.

BatStateU also expanded its library services to provide worthy experience to academics and address restrictions in physical movement.

Consequently, this pandemic opened opportunities for digitized and online service delivery to reach a broader audience with excellent speed, access, and convenience, while improving the quality of services.

DICT Malvar installs Wi-Fi for all at BatStateU-Malvar By: Merwin Samarita

D

epartment ofInformation and Communication Technology of Municipality of Malvar coordinated the Information and Communication Technology of Batangas State University-Malvar Campus for installation of Wi-Fi for all Red Spartan this Academic Year 2020-2021.

The high-speed Wi-Fi with 15 Mbps network speed that will use by the Red Spartans includes the faculty within the vicinity of the University.

According to General Service Office Head of the University, Mr. Wilbert Lumbera, “The free Wi-Fi is just like free Wi-Fi on Mall and each student needs to register first before they access the connection.”

Students may use the Wi-Fi in accessing any sites including the apps except to those sites that were banned by the National Telecommunication Commission.

“It will be a great innovation to education most especially that even if having face to face most teachers

will still be utilizing Google classroom,“ Mr. Lumbera said in an interview.

Mr. Lumbera also uttered, “And anywhere in the campus students can manage to make researches real-time because of this improvement to internet access. Imagine even when you are in canteen, in corridor, in hallway you can manage to submit activities and assignments. So maybe this is a new normal way of instructing students.”

Mr. Lumbera added that this online platform maybe by the students in taking quizzes and no need for test papers and ballpen.

Messenger: Stand Guard Over Kids by: Jullie Anne Belascuain We have been dealing with a lot of chaos lately.

Everyone had no choice but to call this unusual circumstances a new normal. This Coronavirus (CoViD-19) pandemic made #StayAtHome not just a trend but an order. Consequently, Department of Education (DepEd) had made a decision that classes for school year 20202021 will be done through modular and online learning instead of face-to-face. Since technology plays a vital role in our lives, what to expect? Even kids nowadays are spending most of their hours in various social media platforms.

Since this virus outbreak made most of us a digital native, it is really important to be safe especially our younger siblings, they are not knowledgeable enough about the internet world. Year 2017 when Facebook launched this child-friendly application in the United States and eventually expanded to 70 other countries last April. On September, with the help of Stairway Foundation, the Child Rights Network, and other safety partners in the Philippines, this messaging app finally became accessible to the Philippines - the Messenger Kids.

Kicking the Risk I know once in your life or I must say multiple times on your social life, you have experienced scrolling on Facebook and suddenly an inappropriate videos and posts of kids and some abused kids appeared on your newsfeed.

I know its annoying, disappointing and sometimes you'll find yourself crumpling your fist especially if those kids are related to you.

Since identity theft, hacking, child pornography, cyber bullying and other issues are present in social media, it's better to keep an eye to the young ones who are lack of awareness about the social media world. Through the demand of the situation, Facebook made an action and came up with Messenger kids.

This is a messaging application dedicated for children between the ages of six and twelve since it's a safer and more secured substitute that will allow parents to have more control over their children's online life.

because it was considered as an inferior version that needs some improvement on its controls. Despite that, it became well-received due to the adjustment made by the company to answer the requests and demands of its user.

Exploring its Spotlight There are individuals who are gullible that at some point even though they are not really sure about the product, as long as they've heard something good about it, they'll impulsively grab it, and so as true as this Messenger kid. How sure are we about this one?

"Facebook has done a good job of balancing features that both deliver the right information to keep parents in the loop about their child’s use of Messenger Kids, while also allowing children to have fun and learn digital literacy skills," said Larry Madrid, an internet safety advocate and CEO of ConnedSafely.org.

Messenger kids has many features such Parent Dashboard and Supervised Friending. It allows parents to fully monitor their kids' online experiences. They can see how the children use it and they can even be notified if their children ever blocked or reported someone while the latter allows their children to add and/or remove people from their contact list and their parents can check what they are doing real time. "…It’s important to give parents the power to manage their child’s experience, like seeing what images and videos their children are sending and receiving. It’s great to see Facebook providing additional information without overwhelming parents with too much detail,” he added.

Aside from safety features, of course Facebook ensured that this application can ease the boredom of the kids and make them happy with simple incorporated filters, reactions and sound effects when having video chats with their friends and family and they can fully express themselves through stickers, gifs, emojis and drawing tools.

Though it offers good features, maybe some kids might feel a little bit awkward to know that everything they do, even if it's just on Messenger kids, will always be reported back to their parents. Oh kids, better not to chat the little cuties you admire!

Working amidst Pandemic "Through our work with Stairway Foundation, the Child Rights Network, and other safety partners in the Philippines, we learned that Filipino parents are looking for ways to help their children stay in touch with friends and family during this challenging time, in a fun and parentsupervised environment," Facebook's APAC Head of safety Amber Hawkes said.

We are all aware that online classes don't let children interact with their classmates nor have a close bond with their teachers. Messenger kids comes in handy because it lets them connect with others and they are able to communicate with their instructors in order to state their concerns or ask about what they don't understand about the lessons on the module.

This health crisis truly makes things inconvenient, even the education system becomes more challenging for both teacher and students. As the social distancing normalized these days, for ourselves and for the children's protection, technological advances such as Messenger Kids and other social media platform are needed more than ever, as it allows online learning to be more feasible and it's one of the main sources of online communication for school purposes and connections.

D' Ani-Kita: Newest Batangas Airwaves

Would you describe its people with natural megaphone on their throat? or a province of Balisong? or you'd rather tell about its wonders - the natural landscapes and resources anywhere in Batangas.

There are a lot of crops that Batanguenos can offer: palay, coconut, sugarcane and of course the delectable and legendary Kapeng Barako. We also have Taal Lake which is the main source of fish in Batangas. It's not enough that we just know about these informations, it would be better if we know how to preserve and continuously enrich them.

What are you up to this pandemic? Want to feed your minds through FM radio?

Frequency for Barakos Our society are becoming different as fast as the 'tsismis' but some of the government sectors are improving day by day. It is important to have a radio on our houses or even on our phones. It is an effective media platform as many are not yet literate enough in the internet world and it's sad that some of the common sources of news is the neighborhood, I guess.

Department of Agriculture (DA) sponsored community radio station in Batangas State University. It is a pride of the Red Spartans to hail the red and white and spread knowledge about agriculture and fishery to the people of Batangas. Located at the School of Development Communication building, Pablo Borbon Main I and inaugurated last 13th of October - DWPB-FM 107.3 "D' Ani-Kita" radio station, now on Batangas airwaves.

DA has already set two new radio stations. The first one was established in Pampanga State Agricultural University in Magalang; BatSU now manages the second.

This recognized the important role of state universities and colleges (SUCs) as partners of DA in the establishment of community radio stations nationwide. Reliable information on agri-fishery projects and other news from the DA will now reach more farming and fishing communities in Batangas.

Dr. Tirso Ronquillo, the BatSU president, said that the D’ Ani-Kita will not only help to dessiminate information but also, it serves as an on-the-job platform for

students, particularly those who are pursuing development communications, agriculture and fishery courses, and other related degree programs. Imagine working for your alma mater, how good is that?

Spartans On Service D' Ani-Kita radio station will air development-oriented programs featuring the various projects and activities offered by DA that would be of great help to farmers, fishers, agripreneurs, and the youth, among others. BatSU’s faculty members and students of development communications will offer music, entertainment, and cultural programs, while the Forefront Broadcasting Company (FFBC) provides radio programming, management directions, and sustainability modes.

Some programs to be aired initially are "Buhay sa Bahay" and "TALAKalikasan" that will be lead by the faculty members of the red spartans. During the event,

Secretary Dar also approved the university’s proposal for the revitalization of the province’s well-known “Kapeng Barako” through the DA’s Bureau of Agricultural Research (BAR) and committed to supporting the university’s initiatives in promoting the agriculture sector.

It's nice to hear that there are lots of innovation especially on media platforms. This juncture open the gate of our development and improve our existing projects towards enhancement and excellency. Radios are also essential during this time of pandemic to lessen the boredom and educate us even in the safety of our home.

This D' Ani-Kita radio station is a huge milestone to the university as it achieve its goal of contributing to the nation-building. Whenever I turned our radio, I'll be in cloud nine to hear my beloved school delivering the the news of cultivation in Agriculture of our dear province, Batangas.

TRANSFORM, TRANSFORMERS!

No, it's not about the yellow Bumblebee or any other robots but yes, we all need an upgrade! While we are in the comfort of our home, we tend to exercise and focus more on ourselves and that's a good thing; preparing ourselves for the most awaiting moment (for the first time, I bet!), the face-to-face classes. Do you know that the university is also working on its glow up?

Last October 17, the installation of new transformers and replacement of the old ones happened at Batangas State University JPLPC-Malvar with the help of Batangas II Electric Cooperative and Macmac Electrical. It was originally planned last June yet, because of this disturbing coronavirus disease (COVID-19), travel restrictions were implemented and the installation were rescheduled.

Transformers are commonly used to carry electrical energy from one circuit to another by means of the process of electromagnetic induction. It is used to increase or decrease voltage levels between circuits. The Administration and Finance together with the Office of the Executive Director and General Office Services decided to install the new transformers to have a better maintenance and accommodation for future projects related to electricity and building enhancement.

I know most of us are somewhat irritated by the heat whenever we have programs at the gymnasium and even on our ventilated classrooms. According to Mr. Whil Lumbera, Head of General Office Services, the new transformers can supply each of the departments

since it was installed in the new powerhouse of the university. Maybe we can request to use the air-condition unit even once for a while? Let's see. But hey, knowing that the university is preparing for the upcoming programs and projects for the improvement of the campus, well that's something we should look up to.

Sadly, we can't witness some of the improvement of the campus as of now but the utility are maintaining the cleanliness and repairing some of the areas in our university. The infrastructure projects of the university are affected because of the COVID-19. Amidst health crisis, the university is still on hand and doing whatever they can do for the sake of the campus and its students. In fact, there are projects that are work on progress yet they can't start it because of some restrictions brought about by the pandemic.

Above anything that Batanguenos have faced: Taal eruption that leads to suspension of classes and COVID-19 outbreak that brought us to the online classes setup, offices in BatStateU JPLPC-Malvar are still open for transactions and inquiries every weekdays. These new transformers are of great help for the offices to avoid short circuits that may lead to interruption of transactions.

Since there are new transformers, the university heard your demands of having an accessible wifi for all. Who among you are not excited for this? I just wish it's not a turtle net. Alongside with the consecutive catastrophe that we are experiencing, this year is a year of booming plantitos and plantitas. It's another way to temporarily conceal the fear and uneasiness of everything. But, this year is a huge challenge for our bona fide plantitos and plantitas who let their skin burn under the heat of the sun in the middle of horrifying virus outbreak. One way or another, they deserve something useful in return!

As some of the government sectors are initiating actions to help the its people, researchers developed a great help to the agricultural industry and announced it in the press statement last October 6 by the Department of Science and Technology- Philippines Council for Industry Energy and Emerging Technology Research and Development (DOSTPCIEERD) - the HormoGroeTM. We often wonder how hard it is to wear a farmer boots, long sleeves, long-folded baggy pants, all at once under the hot weather and sometimes under the threatening gloomy atmosphere. They have no choice but to invest sweat, time and effort to have the crops they've always waited for months: to earn even a small amount of money, to feed each of us, and to give love and care to their lands of hope.

Researchers from the University of the Philippines- Los Banos (UPLB) gave a new hope for the multiplication of crops and plants as they developed a natural booster of root growth which they called HormoGroeTM. Imagine, their harvest might increase and that's something that can make the farmers and even simple plantitos and plantitas grin from ear to ear.

HormoGroeTM was already tested on various crops: coffee, cassava, banana, vegetables, and also to some ornamental plants including the gumamela and bougainvillea and it resulted to positive result. It's absolutely a huge contribution to the daily basis of hardworking farmers and those who have gardens.

Furthermore, it can boost up the seed germination, make rooting, enhance shoot growth and it is also of great help in flowering corps, fruit trees, vegetables and ornamentals.

"Unlike other products available in the market, HormoGroeTm is not synthetic, it is naturally produced by bacterial and is nano-formulated," Project Leader Dr. Lidia Fernando said. Since HormoGroeTM is composed of natural microorganisms that are nanoencapsulated, it can reduce the impact of environmental risks.

We sometimes thought that vegetables and fruits in the market does not have chemicals in it but the truth is there are lots of present chemicals to make it more healthy and fresh looking, and of course, to longer its life span before it becomes rotten. This HormoGroeTM is substantial as it assures the faster growth of the crops to avoid adding some chemicals in order to preserve it even longer.

UPLB researchers has already set who's responsible on the HormoGroeTM's manufacturing, marketing and distribution and it will be all done through Funding Assistance for Spin-Off and Translation of Research for Advancing Commercialization (FASTRAC) program of MakilingTek. In addition, PCIEERD Executive Director Enrico Paringit acknowledge the use of HormoGroeTm for he believes that it will be the key to earn good quality crops in the country.

The researchers are non-stop in discovering necessary needs of our country.

HormoGroeTM is undeniably can make a huge impact to the lives of plant lovers and most especially to the lives of farmers. This will be available in the market on 2021. It's absolutely a game changer in the industry of agriculture.

Oceans, seas, and lakes: these are just clear evidences of how beautifully-made the nature is; however, have any of you seen or heard what lies beneath any of those? A kraken? A leviathan? Or is it a bio-engineered megalodon?

Well enough with those inauspiciously, nonexisting, nothing-to-do tattled stories, for if they do really exist or has existed, they probab ly yielded away from disgust when somebody with Einstein-like I.Q. thrown a stinky poopybranded diaper headstrong to their faces; who knows?

Meanwhile, on the other water-mediated part of the Philippines, particular in Batangas, food and beverage manufacturer Nestlé Philippines and marine conservation social enterprise Pure Oceans made an initiation on what is to be done to prevent these bodies of water, its marine life from its nearing destruction.

Preventing plastic waste from recurring threats to marine ecosystem in Batangas Pure Oceans, led by its Founder and CEO Pia Roxas Ocampo and Nestlé Philippines conjoined for an intimate goal: to prevent plastic waste crisis in geographically remote coastal and island communities that do not have prevailing access to proper waste management through the use of Basura Bangka to transport plastic waste to recycling facilities.

By: Julius M. Paz Calvin “The Beast” Abueva of the Phoenix Super LPG fuel master returns to the Philippine Basketball League to fight once again his team against the NLEX Road Warriors in the basketball bubble after the suspension was lifted.

Abueva was sentenced to a 16-month suspension – the longest suspension a player has received in a tournament – as an upshot of his actions against TNT import Terrence Jones last year.

Before returning to the league, PBA Commissioner William Marcial initially met Abueva and head Coach Topex and discussed about other penalties imposed on Abueva and his resumption in the game.

Abueva posted a photo of Mother Mary’s statue on his Instagram with the caption,

“Thank you, God is good,” happened during the meeting with Marcial, together with the deputy commissioner Eric Castro and technical officer Mauro Bengua.

Abueva remains to be part of the training with his team for a long time even though he is suspended and not allowed to play in all basketball leagues in the Philippines.

“We are very happy that Calvin was given a second chance to prove himself. The team is here to support him through and through and we have Willie Marcial and Chairman Mitra of GAB to thankful for," according to Phoenix Team Manager, Paolo Baguia.

However, he will still undergo series of examination even after the suspension imposed on him has been removed.

Skills and talents were defined individually hence not all works as an independent player or within a team.

There is no 'I' in team work as they were given a set of assignments to fulfill in a given play otherwise it will vastly fall as an individual play who's chance could only be determined by one's skills.

The team sports rely on the success of a play to its teammates no matter how good an individual member, likewise an individual player depends mainly on himself achieving a goal that does not require any support of another player.

Regardless, Individual sports are a competition against self as the enemy mainly is yourself that will require individual tactics and a psychologically prepared mindset.

Team sports clearly distinguished the best set of players while at the same page reveals the worst among the group as it will not result in the same individual performance.

Meanwhile, Individual sports requires an open mindset as the goal might result in both success and failure which an individual player must bear alone as the result of the performance was mainly caused by the self's capabilities.

This simply shows that Team sports is a well known sport as it connects the skills of individuals while the self trained sports had its hard time setting a standard for itself.

Nevertheless, Individual and Team sports require both discipline and hardwork as one cannot achieve a goal without the ability, perseverance and virtue.

It is true that female players are not known as much as the boys but it should not stay that way and people must accept that it is not a field that can only rule by male players.

There has been an existence of gender separation when it comes to physical sports as for the category for boys should be poles apart to girls and these became a traditional in sports.

Man has been classified to have a better performance than girls when it comes to the physical sports and it was proven because of the high level of their testosterone however, e-sports is different than the actual traditional sports as it won’t require a fit and strong body not even a gender for you to play.

The fact that gender is not a total requirement in e-sports, people still tend to differentiate women from men as they try to label them as weak and are incapable, with these female players still didn’t get the appreciation to compete with men.

Meanwhile, among all the famous gamers around the world, it is mostly composed of men and there are just rare players which women section could relate to or look up to as they try to engage in this type of sports. And, this is one of the reasons why the industry is dominated by men.

It is true that female players are not known as much as the boys but it should not stay that way and people must accept that it is not a field that can only rule by male players. It is the time to adhere and empower women to finally showcase the guts in changing this perspective.

Discrimination among woman is a stereotype that has been built over years and the fact that the world is changing and the platform is already diverse, this must be the time to appreciate the capability of woman.

The point is that women still fail to get a chance to prove their potential in a different field of sports and by addressing this equality in the platform they must initially try to be aware of inequality itself.

Hidilyn Diaz lifts pride

Virtual sports was considered before as a hobby during people’s free time but consequently as pandemic arises and quarantine was put all over the places, the Esports became a good stress reliever to some people who lost their jobs and to people who were reprimanded not to go outside their premises.

Being lockdown at home puts anxieties to citizens and the desolation from the environment brings more worries to people for they cannot do the normal things of their daily life hence, Esports serves as a good platform to alleviate stress.

Now, some known players in sports are in the mobile gaming as they are still restricted to be in their respective field.

The mobile gaming has been a trend before Pandemic but the COVID 19 indeed paved the way for Esports to be known and played by many Filipinos.

Meanwhile, there were people who futilely attend to their jobs and decided to change their track in the gaming profession where they tend to compete locally and internationally as tournaments arise due to the demand of the gamers.

There has been growth on supports from citizens and different telecommunication companies in the esports industry and still progressing with tournaments and partnership all over the places as this industry began to unfold the future sports field.

By: Jay Caguicla Senator Pia Cayetano smacks against the encouraging plan of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) for the studentathletes on the resumption of their training last October 29.

During a press brief, senator Cayetano questioned the CHED on its press conference on the recommencement of the training of the athletes from college and universities.

She clearly pointed out that even professional and adult athletes were affected by the virus as some of the players from the recent PBA tournament contracted the virus.

"These incidents reveal that while we still do not have a vaccine for COVID-19, the risks of transmission and infection are high, even in sports leagues and training bubbles administered by professional leagues, where strict health and safety protocols are being observed and spent for," she stated.

CHED was also asked if they can provide the needed testing to the studentathletes and their coaches though they couldn’t even provide the proper food and vitamins for these students even before the pandemic.

In her statement, she added that CHED should prioritize the students quality of education as it adapts to the virtual learning environment rather than allowing students to undergo training again.

"So, before we even start talking about the resumption of training, let me ask, how is their schooling? Are they getting the support they need for their education? I know many of them have returned to their homes in the provinces where access to WIFI might be weak or even non-existent.

Many of them are also scholars and need financial assistance. How about tutorials?" she added to her statement.

She also advised that the responsible individuals for this education system should just adhere for the meantime with the breathing exercises, stretches, yoga, cardio and strength to be added to the schedule of the students to promote the physical and psychological well-being of the students.

Though last October 26, CHED already had the press briefing stating that the guidelines for the resumption of the college students training were already completed.
