OUR CAMPUS

The Lakes College opened in 2005 with an enrolment of 88 students and two classroom blocks. Today, our enrolment stands at over 1100 students, all engaged in their studies on a campus boasting contemporary and expansive facilities. These structures have been meticulously designed to harmonise with the surrounding environment and aesthetics of the area. Our learning spaces are enveloped by 15 hectares of greenery, amplifying the academic learning experience and fostering a conducive environment for sporting and cultural programs.

In 2023, The Lakes College embarked on a transformative journey, aiming to unravel its identity and revision their Master Plan through collaborative efforts with parents, carers, students, staff and Board members. The revisioning of our Master Plan has empowered us to strategically cultivate the Lakes Learner attributes of Faith, Knowledge, Curiosity, Character and Connection that are integral in providing a foundation for students to develop a strong sense of identity and purpose. We are now in the process of devising programs, creating spaces and envisioning places that contribute to the holistic development of young individuals.

Further details and updates on our revised Master Plan can be found on our website.

BELONGING

The Lakes College is a place of Belonging – knowing that all people need to feel connected to and safe in community. As partners in a child’s educational journey, here at TLC, relationships matter every day!

COMMUNITY | Community is about celebrating the authenticity of self and others, a place of true belonging, where uniqueness and diversity are accepted and embraced.

JUSTICE | Justice call us to stand alongside the voiceless, the marginalised, the oppressed. Through a commitment to creating a more caring and just world - where people are empowered, where people are heard - we work towards reconciliation.

BELIEVING

The Lakes College is a place of Believing – not only are we an inclusive Christian community that understands faith and welcomes diversity, we aim to grow young people of character, who are confident in what they value and how they can serve community locally and globally.

FAITH | Faith is a place of mystery, where we wrestle with uncertainty. In letting go of the fear of that which is unknown, faith gives us the strength to believe in what we cannot see.

LOVE | Love is having a deep respect and selfless care for all humanity and creation, nurtured by giving without expecting anything in return.

1 John 4:19 ‘We love because God first loved us’

BECOMING

The Lakes College is a place for Becoming –committed to the journey, growing young adults who graduate with qualifications, global understanding and the interpersonal skills that establish them as Future Ready.

HOPE | Hope is a gift from God to humanity; thought underpinned by emotion to support humankind through the realities of life. Hope empowers us to survive, endure and seek the next horizon.

COURAGE | Courage lives in the heart where our vulnerability and new-found bravery meet. It is where we dare to be honest and open about who we are and what we believe. Courage is about standing for what is right, even when it’s uncomfortable.

This is CHARACTER. This is our Who we are.

SERVICE LEARNING

Underpinned by our College values, Lakes Learners are challenged to look beyond self. Through our Service Learning approach, they actively connect with local, national and international communities, demonstrating selfless care as they collaborate to create opportunities and solutions that contribute to the greater good. We strive to bridge the gap between the classroom and real-world experiences, involving learners in community engagement and nurturing a sense of care for others, all while broadening their perspectives.

Practical instances of Service Learning involve actively volunteering for the Redcliffe Breakfast Club, participation in the biennial Cambodia student trip, fundraising for diverse charities and raising awareness for various campaigns. These activities exemplify our commitment to instilling a habit of care for others in our students, encouraging them to actively contribute to the wellbeing of the broader community and fostering a global outlook.

WELLBEING

Student Wellbeing at The Lakes College is research based and integrated into all aspects of College life. Our extensive network of care builds student connection and belonging within the community. Students are nurtured through their individual character strengths and encouraged to lead with their virtues, while respecting the unique strengths of each other.

Our signature Find Your North wellbeing framework supports and grows a students self-awareness, emotional agility and mental toughness in preparedness for their pathways beyond school.

Within our Secondary School, the vertical pastoral care system plays a crucial role, encompassing and nurturing the wellbeing of every student by fostering their spiritual, emotional, social and academic development.

Our Primary School actively participates in The Resilience Project, an enriching program centred on instilling Gratitude, Empathy and Mindfulness in our students. A unique aspect of this program is the incorporation of a daily journaling practice. Students are encouraged to maintain a personal journal where they reflect on their experiences, thoughts and feelings related to gratitude, empathy and mindfulness.

By integrating this program into our Primary School wellbeing framework, we not only address the immediate emotional needs of our students but also equip them with lifelong skills that positively impact their personal and academic journeys.

OUTDOOR EDUCATION PROGRAM

One of the key approaches we employ to foster resilience, a sense of belonging and connection is through our Outdoor Education Program, that includes our tailored Camp Program that starts from as early as Year 3.

Camps play a crucial role in molding the character, wellbeing and identity formation of our students. The College strives to create Lakes Learners who are resilient through distinct experiences away from home. This initiative aims to provide essential opportunities for them to cultivate the skills necessary for thriving in the 21st century. Embracing challenges, young individuals are urged to explore and enhance vital character traits such as tenacity and grit.

The pinnacle of our Camp Program is the two-week Year 10 Outdoor Education Camp. Here, students are encouraged to embrace their journey with courage and confidence, placing trust in themselves and their community for personal growth and nourishment. This camp strategically marks the beginning of the Senior Secondary journey, seamlessly transitioning into the Year 11 Leadership Camp. It sets the tone for the introspective Year 12 Camp, prompting students to ponder, “What is your story?” This trio of camps is meticulously designed to empower students to recognise their potential and envision what is attainable.

OUR TEACHING AND LEARNING CULTURE

The vibrant learning community at TLC emerges as students and educators collaborate to foster a supportive and engaging environment. It becomes a space where knowledge thrives, curiosity flourishes, connections are formed and in turn character is forged. The cultural core of our community is bolstered further by diverse learning experiences as students exchange perspectives, offer assistance to one another and celebrate achievements.

PRIMARY SCHOOL

In our Primary School, our Prep –Year 2 students use a play and project-based pedagogy through Walker Learning, allowing them to be active participants in their own learning. The uniqueness of Walker Learning is that it provides essential elements of learning, appropriate for this particular phase of development while encouraging curiosity, creativity, collaboration, communication and critical thinking. This approach provides a strong foundation for future growth and development as our youngest students continue their learning journey through the middle and upper years of Primary School and onto Secondary School.

The foundations for all future learning are formed during these crucial Primary years and our staff strive to make certain these foundations are solid through engaging and interactive learning experiences. Our Primary staff are dedicated to ensuring your child’s lifelong learning journey gets off to a great start. We believe that for a child to reach their learning potential, they must be secure in the knowledge that they are safe and supported. Through our 3 B’s – Be Safe, Be Respectful and Be a Learner – we work together to ensure each young person feels confident to take risks as a learner and to know they are valued as a respected member of our community.

Our diverse learning experiences all commence in Prep and include specialised lessons in:

Year 10 represents the commencement of the senior phase of learning. At this point in their Secondary School journey, students can elect a course of study that aligns with the available offerings in Year 11 and 12 ensuring they are well prepared to meet the demands of the Senior Assessment and Tertiary Entrance (SATE/ATAR) System.

As a result of the vocational education pathway, students become qualified individuals who have the opportunity to step out of school and into apprenticeships, traineeships, TAFE, or university, for further study as lifelong learners with the skills and confidence to meet the challenges ahead of them.

These sports span from the significant trio of Athletics, Cross Country and Swimming, integral to our Interhouse Carnivals, through to more tailored options that include over 20 different sports.
