STALKER Jess James Harris “People and environments that are difficult to pigeon hole that make me feel something, generally it’s the visuals that make other people uncomfortable that I find beautiful.” Where are you from and how do you feel it has influenced the way you look at the world?

What inspires you and influences you and your work?

After living six years in J-bay my family moved back to Johannesburg in 88 and been I have been living in Cape Town for the past 7/8years. I started skating when I moved to Johannesburg as a replacement for surfing when I was six years old. The combination of Johannesburg and skateboarding, which both in my opinion are unlike any act or environment in terms of how fucking gnarly both can be depending on which road you choose to take. Both have made me look at the world from a different perspective.

When and how did photography become a part of your life? I have just always been hyped on shooting photos from a very young age. My parents had a pretty basic 35mm, being a film camera it was more like a treat, I was only allowed to take one pic and then I had to give it back to them. These days kids are shooting and editing pics on phones. In 2005 I started travelling aboard a fair amount while shooting skate films, that’s when I bought a camera of my own and started documenting everything along the way.

Do you feel it’s important for creatives to be open about their experiences? Unless you can teach and share some of your knowledge than no, especially if there are legal implications involved. How important is composition to you in a picture and how do you approach your subject matter with that in mind? I wish I did more but generally, I get over-excited when I find something or someone that I want to capture in the moment. I shoot first and think after which works sometimes, other times it’s the difference between something cool and something just presents itself to me.

You work as a DOP. Has your photography influenced your work in that filed or do you feel it goes visa Versa They are so different in my mind. I have such a different relationship with the two, it’s like two good friends of yours that you don’t want to introduce to each other. For me, it’s like someone saying you can skate so you will probably be good at surfing but it doesn’t work like that. The right answer is everything you ever do influences whatever you are going to do in the future. What medium do you prefer shooting in and what camera are you using at the moment? I like shooting with all cameras. Film to me is the best purely because of the element of surprise of not knowing what you going to get back from the lab. What drives you to capture an image? What type of situation appeals to you? Mostly myself in a car and the less traffic the better. Honestly, it all comes back to the environment I find myself in at that moment, if it’s new I’m generally full of energy however good or uncomfortable. I prefer anything that is not mundane. What is the most uncomfortable moment you have encountered while shooting? 18

Anytime I get asked to wear a reflective jacket on a film set. It’s so important for me to look down and to be cool with my gear regardless what I’m doing, even at school when I had to wear a uniform I would have my own way to rock it. I feel with the life choices I have made I should not have to get creative with a reflective jacket unless its Halloween. Whose work do you admire locally and why? 90% of the homeless, don’t ignore them. Honestly, feel that their ability to survive is admirable... Do you have any future projects in the pipeline that you would like to share with us? I’m pretty motivated to spend half of every year in Bali from April, at the moment that is my focus. I am super into the culture there so hopefully, something interesting will find me before then. Where can we see your work? Faatimah Mohamed-Luke is a visual artist and designer based in Cape Town. In 2003 she graduated from Cape Technikon with ND: Fashion and also did a year of design encompassing Graphic, Interior, Industrial, Textile and Jewellery design disciplines. She is also a founding partner of the SA designer brand adam&eve. She has honed her entrepreneurial and artistic skills, having participated in fashion weeks and exhibitions for over a decade. Three years ago, she resigned from the fashion industry to focus on art and interior design. Her aim is to reintroduce the art form of tessellation in a thouroughly modern way, utilising plastic building blocks to create large scale artworks. She enjoys challenging the views of materiality and what constitutes an artistic medium, while elevating the humble children’s toy into a nostalgic visual feast. Faatimah’s chosen medium allows for a playfulness and accessibility within the artwork and a democratisation within the art world. Faatimah’s need to foster accessibility has led to numerous public installations, one of which won a Loerie award. She hopes to constantly blur the line between art and design as she evolves and grows on her journey through various creative avenues.

“While on holiday in Morocco, 5 years ago, I fell in love with ornate, intricate abstract patterns. It was everywhere, every surface was painstakingly adorned to perfection. I loved how much pride the locals artists and artisans took in creating such beauty and how much its citizens and tourists appreciated it. It spoke to different parts of my heritage; African and Arab. It was the first time I had witnessed parts of my heritage living together so gracefully.”

cific tones just for me. My hope is to highlight and recreate the art form of tessellation in a modern way using plastic building blocks. In my work, I have championed the little building block, as my chosen art medium. I’ve created landscapes, portraits, and many abstracts, as one would with any other art medium. What I love most about it, is that it is a non traditional art medium and comes with no expectations but it has its own unique set of challenges. I believe that challenging an already established environment and challenging society is an essential part of an artists work and this medium helps me to do that by starting the conversation, ‘But is it art’. I also hope that my ability to exhibit and make a living from my art allows others the freedom and courage to experiment with new media. For this work, deCOLOURnise is a play on the idea of decolonizing black and white spaces. As with the intention of decolonizing, one needs to unlearn the many untruths that we are taught during our formal education. We need to replace it with the other education we are all taught. Our knowledge that

has been excluded, that comes from a different source. Knowledge taught through storytelling and narratives that have passed through lineages over centuries. Knowledge that takes the form of a visual language, present around us in everyday items and ceremonial traditions. Knowledge that is older and can still be proven as truth. The addition of this ancient knowledge comes in the form of pattern and symbolism. Within these pieces, the symbols have been deconstructed so that we may relearn and examine the meanings and messages behind each symbol and colour combination. Within the pattern I have added relief segments, to create an open-ness and open-mindedness between our cultures. My hope is that in sharing and learning our newfound collective knowledge, we will create a rich and more accurate global history. This is where I discovered the art of Tessellation i.e. a highly symmetric, edge-to-edge tiling using a simple porcelain shape. The porcelain tile used to create mosaics didn’t really resonate with me, so I looked to a more unusual basic shape. Playing with my little human, lead me to Lego and eventually to a locally manufactured block which could be made in speTHE LAKE

Dawn Chorus Dangerfields “Everything I went through humbled me, in a personal sense as well as in a musical sense. I was stripped of any pride that I might have had in terms of how people might have perceived me in the past. At Endless Daze that year, in 2017, I was very sick and everyone saw me there, and saw me walking around and playing onstage and knew that already. So I had to get used to the idea that that was how they saw me and that was who I was. I just had to make peace with it and for this album I embraced it and now I’ve moved past it. It was a new start in a way.” WH Auden said, “the so-called traumatic experience is not an accident, but the opportunity for which the child has been patiently waiting - had it not occurred, it would have found another - in order that its life became a serious matter.” It’s a sentiment that seeks to disarm the inevitability of the trauma that will be faced in one’s life by leveraging it into an act of significance rather than simply an act of sorrow. Because how unjust would it be if terrible things happened just for the sake of them happening and nothing more? That’s why we tend to seek meaning to justify life’s betrayals. And if there is little meaning to be found on our own, we turn to the ones who have been thrust into creating it for themselves - the ones who, in turn, offer us illumination through whatever darkness we may come to wander through, for they were brave enough to enter there first. Dangerfields are no strangers to this darkness. Since the start of their career in 2016, the band

(initially Lucas Swart - Guitars, Vocals; Calvin Siderfin - Bass, Vocals; Joshua Van Zyl - Guitars; Nicolaas Rossouw - Drums, and since 2018 joined by Paul de Villiers on keyboards and backing vocals) swiftly cemented themselves as a staple of the Cape Town alternative rock scene with their melancholic amalgamation of shoe-gaze, post-punk and dream-pop, and their cathartic and carefully considered approach to live performances. Having won over an ever-increasing fanbase - with two EPs released and multiple club and festival slots under their belts - the future of the band looked promising, until Lucas was diagnosed with chronic kidney failure in early 2017. It was this dire situation that led to the genesis of the band’s latest album, Echoes and Pulses. Not by choice but by necessity. Due to the limitations brought upon the band by Lucas’s critical condition, they had to put their plans on hold as he was subjected to regular hospital stays. But what

Echoes and Pulses is an album rich in what Dangerfields does best: piercing guitar lines struck across tight grooves and dreamy soundscapes. But what this sound frames in this body of work is a far more direct and uninhibited record than what the band has previously put out, with Lucas’s usual reverence for romantic, gothic-tinged lyricism haunted by the very real presence of death. It is brave writing and very much akin to certain works of The Antlers, Sufjan Stevens and Mount Eerie, works that provided a semblance of guidance throughout the darkness that Lucas has faced. “I guess that I was inspired by the raw honesty of those records - Phil Elverum (Mount Eerie) made A Crow Looked At Me just after his wife died and it’s very directly the main theme of the album, and Sufjan Stevens did something similar with Carrie & Lowell after losing his mother, and Peter Silberman (The Antlers) created Hospice back in 2009, which is one of my favourite records ever. It basically tells the story of an emotionally abusive relationship through the allegory of a caregiver and a cancer patient - it’s fucking devastating. I saw my situation as an opportunity to create something that had potential to exist alongside those types of albums, the ones that really stick with people (if they can bear to actually listen to them from start through to finish). This is the sort of record that no band ever hopes to make. Death is not the sort of thing that anyone hopes to face, despite it’s inevitability. But THE LAKE

that’s why these sorts of records are important. In the darkest and most uncertain parts of our singular journeys, these records are our dearest companions - weary travelers who have been where we are before and can, with knowledge and gentleness, assure us that we aren’t alone. You may not necessarily be at the end of your journey but these records make that ending far less daunting in their familiarity. And they remind us to appreciate those who we share our journeys with. Records like Echoes and Pulses are significant. The school day has just ended and a flock of young kids have rushed through the doors of the Y?GEN Apparel Store at 99 Park Road, Wynberg, while their parents patiently wait for them in the car parked outside. They’re there to try on the new Y?GEN x Laurus Sport track suits hanging on the rack, maybe play a game of FIFA on the store’s Xbox console and hopefully get to spend some time with The Voice of The Cape, YoungstaCPT.

The Y?GEN Store is an accurate embodiment of where YoungstaCPT is at in his career right now having stared out selling his merch out of car boots outside of his shows, to renting out spaces for popup shops, to now running his own business with his brother and the Y?GEN team. It’s still a completely independent organization but it’s just a lot more legitimate now. And although the store has only been open for a few months, it has already established itself as a focal point within YoungstaCPT’s neighborhood - almost acting as more of a community centre than just a clothing store, which is precisely his modus operandi.

“We have to move on to the next phase and start acquiring these assets so that we can start cleaning up communities, looking after the youth and start making sure that they have something to look forward to and have something else to do with their time. Otherwise they just catch on kak, that’s the problem. So we offer them a different outlook and say, ‘maybe you can come work here instead or start a clothing label and bring it to the shop and sell it here or you can make your own album and put it next to mine.’”

coming struggle that is chronicled within each track. It’s an extensive 22-track analysis of Coloured Culture in South Africa and the core of the colonial and governmental indoctrination that has come to shape many of the issues facing it today - from the arrival of Jan van Riebeeck and the VOC slave trade to Wouter Basson’s architecture of the country’s current drug epidemic initiated by his secret chemical and biological warfare projects that perpetuated the mentality of slavery. Providing the source material for these tracks is the album’s narrator and YoungstaCPT’s grandfather, Shaakie Roberts. At the inception of this album, Shaakie had been strategically interviewed and recorded by his grandson over the course of 2015, so that his voice could be lent as a guide throughout the tracks. He appears on and off throughout the album, weighing in on a political debate or regaling with a quick anecdote from his past, giving the record a wider historic scope of the issues it touches on. “There were a lot of things that he said that I couldn’t have said better, so instead of hearing me say it,

VOICE BLESSING NGOBENI

Blessing Ngobeni was born in 1985 in a small rural town of Tzaneen in Limpopo. At the age of ten, he moved to Johannesburg where, after a tumultuous decade, he entered the contemporary art scene. Bringing with him a unique style and a critique of political regimes, Ngobeni made the corruption, incompetence and duplicity of current South African ruling elite the subjects of his art.

He tackled the disconcerting consequences of betraying democratic ideals, the failure to learn from historical tragedies and the expanding gap between the rich and poor. This critique is informed by Ngobeni’s own experience, the hardships and challenges he had to confront as a child and adolescent. In 2011, Ngobeni received the Reinhold Cassirer Award which afforded him a three-month residency at the Bag Factory in Fordsburg, Johannesburg. During his residency, he interacted with veteran artists David Koloane, Patrick Mautloa and Sam Nhlengethwa who further motivated his aspirations of pursuing art seriously. He also benefitted from visiting international artists; one outcome being the Emergency Exit exhibition, for which he collaborated with Nigerian artist Omega Udemba in 2012. The following year he was a recipient of the Impact Award from the Arts and Culture Trust and was listed as one of the Mail & Guardian’s 200 Young South Africans.

At this point, Ngobeni was on the rise, not only was his name circulating within the local art scene but he began entering the international arena through artist residencies. In 2015 he attended a two-month residency at the Headlands Centre for Art in San Francisco and in 2016 he was the only artist from Africa among several international artists selected for the Cleveland Foundation’s Creative Fusion Program. He also took up another residency in New York and shortly afterwards, and visited France to attend a graffiti workshop called Grafikama in 2016. Although Ngobeni has been exhibiting his artworks since 2007, his visibility in the contemporary art scene took effect in 2012 when he joined Gallery MoMo, which facilitated his participation in noteworthy local and international projects. Some of his exhibitions during THE LAKE

this time were In His State of Madness (2014) and As If You Care (2015). His subsequent move to the Everard Read Gallery at the end of 2015 accelerated Ngobeni’s art career. His notable exhibitions since 2015 have been The Song of the Chicotte (2016), Masked Reality (2017), Enemy of Foe (2018) and A Note From Error (2018) in Johannesburg, Cape Town and London. Ngobeni enjoys regular appearances at the FNB Joburg Art Fair and Investec Cape Town Art Fair. His artworks have been also featured at the EXPO Chicago (2017 and 2018) and PULSE Miami Beach (2018) in the United States. Ngobeni is currently advancing his artistic trajectory. In particular, he is expanding his range of creative mediums through producing free-standing and wall-based sculptures, video animations, sound installations and live performances. These recent developments in terms of medium bring into effect rich contents and dynamic expressions to Ngobeni’s art, as his latest exhibition A Note From Error demonstrates. They also give a curious twist to his hybrid language which points to various references: artists Dumile Feni, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Norman Catherine, Pablo Picasso and Joan Miró; the artistic grammar of Surrealism, the rebellion of Dada and the symbolic force of Neo-Expressionism; economic use of visual elements of Minimalism. These qualities expand the depth of Ngobeni’s art, equally they articulate effectively its fusion of nightmarish, absurd, beautiful and captivating imageries. It is of importance to note that Ngobeni is an artist focusing on more than his own evolving career. His efforts in mentoring young artists have lead him to form two projects that support graduates who are transitioning from their fine art training at tertiary institutions to their careers as full-time artists. Blessing Ngobeni has been awarded Standard Bank Young Artist for Visual Arts 2020. alchemy Le Roux Hofmeyr

Le Roux Hofmeyr began in the world of interior architecture. Soon he moved on to furniture design, after which his appetite for metals grew. This lead Le Roux to join the team at Bronze Age Sculpture House, where today one of his duties is to experiment with chemicals on metals and explore the various creative outcomes.

We met with Le Roux at Bronze Age Sculpture House in Woodstock, Cape Town. A multi-functional foundry and studio well established within the design and art community. The studio had a peculiar energy to it. Imagine a museum on an acid trip mixed with a laboratory into it. Alluring and curious and it had my full attention. He floats comfortably through the studio whilst educating us about the space and how it operates. His passion for patina is dominant. Patina is a green or brown film that forms on the surface of metals like bronze, produced by long period oxidation. The seemingly magical process taking place through Le Roux’s work gives him the title of a modern-day alchemist. He gets to experiment through chemistry,

metals and industrial flamethrowers to design exquisite works of art. Le Roux seems to have a knack for creating art as he also finds himself in the alluringly psychedelic band, The Valley, based in Cape Town. I had the pleasure of sharing this insightful experience with the team from @casualsex_ . We spent the day documenting and learning more about him and his bewitching passions. This experience has been carefully compiled to a 13-minute visual glimpse into the world of Le Roux Hofmeyr. **CASUALSEX (an unorthodox creative collective producing minidocs on the alternative scene). @casualsex_ .

As far as punk rock goes I have seen my fair share of local bands trying to sweat their opinions out on dirty little stages throughout this vast wasteland that we call South Africa over the last odd twenty years or so. Mostly they have been well off middle class white boys coming from suburban areas rebelling against their uptight religious parents for two years after high school until they eventually give in to the system and go and study some mediocre degree in advertising to afford that expensive car and cocaine they always wanted to impress the ladies within the first place... THE LAKE

In the case of TCIYF (The Cum In Your Face), we are dealing with a whole nother ball game here. Nothing is more punk when it comes straight from the source, a habitat and a very turbulent political situation and of course, the ever-present sidekick known as skateboarding. In this case, the source is Soweto. TCIYF first came on to my radar a few years ago through the SSS (Soweto Skate Society) and I have been following them ever since (Check out some early Youtube videos). I eventually got to see them play a secret gig at the Kill City Blues studios a few years back and had my hair blown back six ways. This 69

is genuinely the most punk shit coming from our side since “Wild Youth” (Durban) and “National Wake” (JHB) in the early eighties and recently I had the privilege to join them in the Redbull studios as they fleshed out some recordings for their first EP simply titled ‘CumLife’. Amongst the chaos-filled with gin, Redbull and Chicken Licken these cats recorded some of the most Thrash Punk tracks I have heard in a long time. PUNK AS FUCK. The magic to this foursome is Musa the thrash specialist on lead guitar, Pule screaming his dry lungs to the core on the mic, Jazz on the drums (No band can go wrong with a Jazz drummer lets face it... and he really is a Jazz drummer) and finally Tox on the bass guitar making sure that the tempo is right there where we need it to be. Recently TCIYF did a short European tour with VANS through Berlin and France to very unsuspecting European crowds. Within the mix, there will always be a presence of Sachaba TheBakersman making sure that the spirit of the SSS stays alive within the movement. We need music for the movement and while it might not be the movement the rest of this country wants to hear I will sing it with them. To quote Gene Wilder in the first rendition of Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, “’We are the music-makers and we are the dreamers of dreams’.

WAX JUNKIE RekLiz I’ve learnt that vinyl does not travel well and so this is my third go at building a collection. This time, no matter what the shipping costs, the records are coming with me . I have to say that I’m not an audiophile, but rather a vinyl addict. It feels like I never have enough vinyl, but I have over 1200 records, and my turntable collection is 5-strong (you never know when you might need a spare). My collection is split in two: some at home and some at work, because it’s necessary and I play records on weekends at The Stoep & Swing (Glencairn). UNKLE Never, Never, Land Mo’Wax - 2003

I was living in Edinburgh, Scotland at the time and in a music store when I first heard this. I didn’t even flinch, walking straight to the dude who worked there to ask what it was. I think the track playing was Reign, with vocals by Ian Brown which I immediately recognised. Had to have it. What an album.

This is one of the more recent albums in my collection that I came across at a very cool independent music store in Lisboa, Portugal. A brilliant introduction and induction into the world of African-American jazz, funk and soul during the era of 1969-75.

I have an album collection ready for when-the-house-is-on-fire and this album is first in this pile that I’ll make a dash for. I remember hearing this for the first time at a friend’s house in Vredehoek and thinking, Omigod, what is this? It’s been a staple listen since then, on all possible formats.

This is his debut album that followed his Pleasure & Pain session with Tom Fruend. I love Ben Harper and this album more than any other album by him. I think it beautifully captures the pain of an African-American boy raised by a religious family living in modern (unequal) America. His interpretation of Maya Angelou’s I’ll Rise is breathtakingly real and gets me every single time.

The Grunge bug bit me hard in the late 90s and this album above all others in this genre stands out for me. Listening to the melodic tones of Oceans, the anthemic Alive and the riffs of Even Flow, I challenge you to find a harder-hitting debut album from the first bar.

This was such a surprise find. Crate-digging in the dusty basement of a junk shop in Gansbaai I came across this rekkid. Of course it was the label I recognised and therefore no hesitation in taking it home. Turns out this was his only recording on Verve and a one-off live recording in Paris. If you love blues you’ll love this.

For the opening exhibition in Frank Gehry’s gleaming new MARTa Herford Museum in Germany, Artistic Director Jan Hoet, longtime director (from 1975 to 2001) of the Stedelijk Museum, rounded up images and objects representing heroes. Uniting them is a sweeping and important examination of the idea of heroism in visual culture from different eras by Hoet and other scholars such as Anne-Marie Bonnet, Bazon Bock and Boris Groys.
