Yes. Gingivitis is an early stage of gum disease. It is reversible, but if neglected it can lead to periodontitis and consequently, loss of teeth. Gingivitis not only is controllable, it is preventable. The culprit is plaque, the colorless, sticky film that forms on the teeth. The bacteria found in plaque irritates the gums. It’s estimated that more than half of all people over 18 have at least the early stage of gum disease. Most become aware that something is wrong when their gums become red, swollen or tender, and/or bleed easily. The best defense against getting gingivitis is consistent removal of plaque—brushing properly twice a day and using floss daily to remove plaque and food particles from between teeth. Plaque buildup is persistent, and even the most faithful home care can’t remove it all. It takes professional cleaning in the dentist’s office to remove plaque at the gum line, where the gingivitis process starts. Scheduling regular checkups and cleanings provides another plus: The dentist may detect the beginning of gingivitis even before the patient becomes aware of swelling or other symptoms. The earlier gingivitis is recognized, the easier it is to treat. Don’t wait until it hurts. We can help.

Operation: Second Life. After A Successful Liver Transplant, TSC Student Noe Gonzalez Stars In His Own Story

Texas Southmost College general studies student Noe Gonzalez is breaking out as an impressive on-air host while interning for Space Channel. He reports about the blooming local space industry and how our area is at the center of the new push toward the stars.

The 40-year-old is not a typical student by any stretch of the imagination.

Yes, Gonzalez is a little older than most of his TSC peers, but Gonzalez is fuller of life than anyone you will ever meet.

That’s because he knows he is lucky to be alive after a tough battle and close call.

Before his Space Channel debut and before he enrolled in school as a “non-traditional” student, he was waiting for a liver transplant.

He had constant pain, and he knew if time went on without getting the lifesaving procedure he was likely to pass away.

His time was running out and he knew dying was a stronger and stronger possibility.

But after nearly four years of grueling patience a match was found, and his life-saving surgery took place. Recovery was another process but when he got better, he wasn’t going to waste a single moment.

“I said you know what? I want to make my second chance count,” Gonzalez said. “I just have a different outlook on life. Being so close to death’s doorstep everything feels precious.”

Gonzalez’s first order of business after being hospital-bound? Catch up on some fishing with his dad. To this day he is a big part of The Bubba’s South Texas Sportsman. A

popular online group that meets up to catch the big one. He also volunteers with RGV Fishing Area and Waterway Cleanups.

After rekindling his hobby and volunteer work, his next step was to further his education.

He stayed in the city he loves, Brownsville and started here at Texas Southmost College.

“I wanted to go back to school to better my life,” “I want to make Brownsville better too. I love my city; I love the Valley. My wife is also going to school, she’s in the Paralegal Studies program.”

Gonzalez said he has seen the quality of life around TSC improve... for him that means more students, more events and multimedia to promote and highlight events. He and his wife are both enrolled as students and enjoying college life.

“This is my third semester at TSC, and I have really noticed a difference,” Gonzalez said. “From when I started right when classes started to be held in person to now...the parking lot is full. There is so much going on and a ton of energy on campus.”

Noe is a part of the transformation the college, the partnership with Space Channel presents a unique opportunity for students to learn skills, show off talents and have pride in Texas Southmost College.

“We’re showing the world what South Texas has to offer,” Gonzalez said. “Interning here with the Space Channel it’s just a perfect fit. I’m taking it in full stride and I’m just going to keep pushing forward. The sky is the limit if you keep a positive mindset.”

Gonzalez is a man driven by his passions. Whether it’s fishing and waterway conversation, showing his talents reporting or diving headfirst into Scorpion pride, Noe puts everything into what he does.

“Going to school seems like the best decision I’ve ever made,” Gonzalez said. “I’m humbled to be part of the school and of the Space Channel program. It feels great to be in my hometown and get the college experience, the full college experience.”

To register for classes at TSC and get in on the excitement of being a Scorpion you can e-mail admissions@tsc.edu. Falcons vs. Vikings

On Tuesday, The Los Fresnos Falcons took on the Defending District 32-5A District Champion Brownsville Pace Vikings for another round of non-district action. Last season, the Falcons went to Pace in which the Vikings won 73-52. In the last two matchups, Los Fresnos is 1-1, as the Falcons won against Pace 73-61 in 2020.

To start the first quarter, the Pace Vikings jumped ahead to an 18-5 lead due to a solid defense which

was backed by an explosive offense. The second quarter saw a more explosive Falcon offense, who outscored the Vikings 16 to 14. Despite a great second quarter, Los Fresnos still trailed 32-21 at the half.

The Vikings took over again in the third quarter, playing a more solid offense and limited Los Fresnos to only 12 points. Key points allowed Pace to jump ahead to a 50-33 lead at the end of the third quarter.

Now in the fourth quarter, Los Fresnos came out guns blazing. Thanks to an efficient offense and

stellar defense, the Falcons scored a whopping 28 points, all while limiting the Vikings to 13 points. Despite the big comeback in the fourth, Los Fresnos fell 63 to 61.

Now 7-2 on the season, Los Fresnos has a couple more key matchups in the non-district campaign before 32-6A play kicks off in mid-January. Some nondistrict matchups to look out for are, Rio Hondo, PSJA North, Mission, Laredo United South and Economedes.

Big win over the Holidays

Los Fresnos defeats SJA over Thanksgiving Break

The Los Fresnos Lady Falcons faced off against the St. Joseph Academy Lady Bloodhounds over the Holiday Break. After a loss in tournament play, Los Fresnos was set to try to get a win to end the week. In the second meeting against St Joseph in 2022, Los Fresnos looked to repeat after their 70-34 win over the Lady Bloodhounds on

November 11.

At the end of the first quarter, Los Fresnos, thanks to a solid offense and key defense, put up 20 points and only allowed six points by the Lady Bloodhounds. The Lady Falcons continued their offensive dominance in the second quarter to lead 3416 at the half.

Los Fresnos picked up right where they left off to start off the second half. Out scoring the Lady

Bloodhounds 12-6 in the third and 12-5 in the fourth, Los Fresnos would win 58-27 over Brownsville St. Joseph.

Now posting a solid 9-3 record in non-district play, Los Fresnos has some big matchups over Harvest Christian Academy, Edinburg, Edinburg North and a couple more as Los Fresnos continues to prepare for District 32-6A action come mid-January.

A Legacy of Success: DIX Industries Celebrates 75th Anniversary at the Port

proclamation issued by the BND Board of Commissioners.

“Dick was instrumental in developing connections with citrus packers in Montemorelos, Mexico, and West German importers which led to millions of cartons of citrus export moving through the port in the 1960s and the export of Texas citrus and Rio Grande Valley vegetables in the 1970s,” reads the proclamation.

the company in the late 1970s. Today, Bob’s son, Lee Ostos, is president of the company his grandfather founded.

Lee helped the company transition with the times and spearheaded the company’s name change to what is now known as DIX Industries.

When the Port of Brownsville first opened in May 1936, many people celebrated the promise of economic opportunities that would bring them closer to the American dream.

Richard “Dick” Ostos was one of those individuals, coming to Brownsville from New York in 1936 to work for

Philen-Miller, a steamship agent and stevedore company that brought the first vessel to the newly minted port of the Rio Grande Valley.

Over a decade later in 1947, Dick embarked on that opportunity and founded DIX Shipping Company-Shipping Agents and Stevedores at the Port of Brownsville. Thanks to

DIX Shipping, the oldest full-service stevedoring company in the Port of Brownsville, saw the cargo trends at the port evolve from agricultural exports like fruits in the 1940s and cotton in the 1950s to steel products, wind energy components, and project cargo for the space industry today.

In 1970, Dick’s youngest son Bob joined the company and was promoted to president of

As the company celebrates its 75th anniversary, Lee Ostos reflects on how the port has provided a foundation for his company to succeed and compete in the challenging maritime industry.

“The port’s continued development of infrastructure including docks, leased space for warehouses and their development of storage and other places in the port has allowed us to really expand our business,” said Lee Ostos.

From its original 400,000 square foot warehouse, the company has doubled

its square footage to 800,000 in Brownsville and opened offices in Corpus Christi, Monterrey, and Veracruz, Mexico, to provide cohesive services to markets in the U.S. and Mexico. Today there are over 100 employees throughout Dix Industries including crane operators, heavy machinery equipment operators, stevedores and office staff.

Besides steel and project cargo, the company provides key logistical services for the movement of break bulk, bulk grain, and other general cargo.

“When we bring businesses, the port figures out a way to make it work, we were the first company to bring in windmill components to the port and we continue to serve ship owners and charters with port services. Seventyfive continuous years of meeting changing maritime needs,” said Lee Ostos.

The Biggest Trick to Reading More

spare moments!

Standing in line at the post office? Read a book. Cooling your heels at the dentist? Read a book. Poop ing? Read a book. Waiting to pick up your kid from school? Read. I’ll even read in between sets while I’m lifting weights. #barbell sandbooks

The easiest way to be ready to read when you find yourself with a little slice of time is to download the Kindle app on your phone. You almost always have your phone with you, and will thus almost always have a library at your fin gertips. (And on the cheap if you want; you can get thousands of classics for free.)

increases when you read an analog book compared to reading on digital devices. It’s probably because you simply focus more when using the former medium.

The other advantage of paper books is that I find it easier to highlight and make notes compared to e-readers.

While I try to do most of my reading with physical books, digital books still have a place in my reading schedule. I use the Kindle app for spare moment read ing and nothing more. A spare “moment” lasts about 5-15 minutes, or about the amount of time I can read on my phone before the itch to check another app arises.

2-hour

Next time you’re travel ing by plane, instead of loading your phone with apps and movies, stock it with books. Better yet, bring a physical book or two in your carry-on.

When people ask me how I read so many books, they’re usually fishing for a speed reading technique that will allow their brains to swallow books whole.

Speed reading certainly plays a role in my reading technique (more on that later), but it’s not my killer secret.

Lean in. I’m going to whisper the secret to read ing a lot of books.

Are you ready?

You need to spend more time reading. I spend a lot of time reading because it’s part of my job.

To prepare for my podcast, I read my guest’s book(s). When I write articles, I read books for re search. Reading is just part of my job description.

Being amazed at how many books I read in a year would be like being amazed at how many leaky

faucets a plumber fixed in a year. It’s not that impres sive when it’s what you do for work.

With that said, in ad dition to the books I read specifically for the Art of Manliness last year, I also managed to read 2-3 books every month for pleasure. That’s more than two dozen non-work related books in 12 months. It’s an amount that I think most men with even the busiest of sched ules can very viably knock off in a year too.

So the #1 secret to read ing more is to spend more time reading.

How can you find this time?

Schedule time for read ing. You can’t in fact find time for reading; you’ve got to make time for it. And the best way to make time for something is to put it on your daily schedule. You don’t need to set aside an hour straight for reading. If you’re just starting off with

making reading a priority, you probably don’t yet have the attention span for it, and trying to read that long in one sitting will likely set you up for frustration. In stead, block off 30 minutes in the morning and 30 min utes at night for reading. Heck, make those 20-min ute blocks if a half hour still seems too long. Instead of doing your typical timewasting smartphone scan at those times, you’ll read. You’ll be amazed at how many books you can knock off in a month by reading an hour a day.

Use spare moments for reading. Even though your daily schedule may seem packed, there are invari ably small pockets of time hidden in its interstices that you typically waste. A few minutes of downtime be tween activities or appoint ments may seem trivial, but they soon add up to hours, and to entire books read; there’s great possibilities in

Avoid reading on your smartphone. So I just recommended using the Kindle app on your smart phone to get more reading done. Now I’m going to completely contradict that advice by recommending you avoid reading on your smartphone as much as possible.

Let me explain.

I’ve found that when I read on my phone, I tend to get really distracted. I’ll read for 5 minutes, but then get the itch to check my email or scroll through Instagram. I’ll do a quick check of other apps and then get back to reading. Five minutes later the itch comes back, and I repeat the cycle. I never get in any good, focused reading when I read on my phone.

Consequently, I try to do most of my reading with physical books. What’s more, studies suggest that reading comprehension

Of course, I read dif ferent books on my phone and in paperback; it would be a huge pain in the rear to try to switch back and forth between a digital and hard copy of the very same book. At any given time, I’ll be reading one book as a paperback, and a different book on my Kindle app, of ten picking a “lighter” book for the latter selection, since I won’t be engaging it with as much sustained attention.

Take advantage of travel time. If you com mute by subway or bus, use that travel time to read.

My favorite time to get reading done is when I’m on a plane. You’d be surprised how much read ing you can accomplish during a two-hour flight in the absence of Wi-Fidependent distractions. In fact, you can finish entire books from beginning to end in that amount of time. Short books, of course. I’ve

Listen to audiobooks. I don’t listen to too many audiobooks; it’s just not my preferred method of consuming literature. But if I’m going on a long road trip where I’ll be doing most of the driving, I’ll buy a few on Audible to pass the time. If you’re on the road a lot, your drive can be a golden opportunity to consume a big ol’ library of books.

Pro-tip: speed up the narration to 1.5x or 2x. You can still understand everything, but it will allow you to get through a book much faster.

Speed read strategi cally. As mentioned above, when people ask me how I read so many books, they often assume...

at trying to completely redo the outsides and also remodel whatever needs to be on the inside.”

So, What is A m I Kids

AMI Kids is an Organization that was founded in 1969 by Judge Frank Orlando Chief Juvenile Court Judge in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The organization basically is to help kids in need of support. Formerly, the location in Los Fresnos was a site for troubled kids as an alternative to Juvenile detention, now the location focusing solely on children in the foster care system. The students

there attend the Los Fresnos CISD and are supported with tutoring or any mentorship and guidance they may need.

AMI Kids is a very large organization, but Director Ibarra explains that their location specializes in kids in the foster care system. These kids have housing there at the facility and the Program staff/mentors help kids in many different ways.

“They(Program staff), are not only staff but mentors, that create nurturing bonds with our young men, ensuring confidence and stability,”

Juan Delgado says that’s what Noble

recognized right away, and saw how it fell right in line with their values.

Noble's motto is “Inspire hope, Improve lives, and strengthen the community we live in.”

Juan Delgado shares that they are there to "assist people who are in need and make our community a better one for everyone.”

Juan Delagado continues by saying, “We’re from the Valley, we’re blessed to have a good job and be able to provide for our families, and therefore we want to be able to help others,” Delgado finishes with, “We want to make this a BETTER community!”

On Monday, November 21, a meeting was held in Port Isabel by AMI kids. There, Noble, Texas Builders presented a check for $6,913 for the cost of materials to begin renovations at the AMI kids facility in Los Fresnos. Vice President at Noble, Juan Delgado shares that Rene Capistran, CEO of Noble met with AMI Kids Director, Javier Ibarra a couple of years ago and loved what AMI kids do for the youth in the area. He further shared that

there was a need for renovations there at the AMI kids facility.

“And so what we did, is we teamed up with them,” Delgado says that Noble will be assisting AMI kids by giving $6,913 to them for the materials needed for some of the renovations of the first dorm. Noble has said they are working to help more in the next year by fundraising to help AMI Kids get the funds they need. Juan Delagado also mentions that Noble will be offering material prices at wholesale, making the cost less for any of the renovations they may

need.

AMI kids’ Executive Director, Javier Ibarra states, “This contribution that Noble Texas Builders/Noble Texas Charities has provided to AMI Kids of the Rio Grande Valley is much appreciated and will be put to great use in renovating the exterior of one of our dorms.”

Glenn Lemke, the AMI kids RGV Chairman, shared that they are hoping to have that price matched by the AMI kids organization in order to do more repairs towards the first dorm. Lemke shares “We are looking
