The following story is a chapter from a manuscript entitled The Bicentennial History of La Feria, Texas written by Eddie Gathings McNail in 1975.

Throughout the coming year we’ll be reprinting sections of her research into the history of La Feria. We will also be reprinting stories and photos from La Feria New’s past as the newspaper celebrates its 100 year anniversary.

La Feria’s first newspaper was published in 1913 under the title THE LA FERIA LEADER. It was an “up and coming” newspaper with ads from San Antonio and Houston.

One ad read: “Texas Matrimonial Bureau in San Antonio. Enclosed 10 cents for particulars. High class ladies and gentlemen, confidential.”

Another read: “Lydia Pinkham’s Medicine for Ladies’ monthly complaint. Order soon.”

The LA FERIA NEWS was established December 6, 1923 with L.S. Babo as publisher.

Anna Harpst came to the Valley from Ohio in 1924, a young widow with two small children. Earlier her father had come to this section with a land company and had bought a citrus grove. After selling insurance for a year, Mrs. Harpst went into partnership to lease the local weekly newspaper, the LA FERIA NEWS. When the year’s lease expired in 1926, the partners bought the newspaper and moved the business into the present location on 124 West Oleander. (in 1975 at the time of this writing -ed.)

In 1946, Mrs. Harpst sold the LA FERIA NEWS to Kenneth L. Larson. R.W. Hunley and Max H. Robinson bought the paper from Larson in 1947.

In 1948, Robinson and Hunley, publishers of the LA FERIA NEWS, sold the newspaper and printing plant to a newly-formed corporation to be known as the La Feria Publishing Company. W.P. Briscoe, city manager of Harlingen, Sam Gerald, Valley newspaperman, and Karl M. Gibbon, Harlingen attorney, were members of the corporation.

As a result, Gerald resigned as Farm Editor of the Valley Morning Star. Prior to his connection with the Star, he had been managing editor of the Valley Evening Review and before that, he had been editor, publisher and advertising manager from time to time on various Texas and southwestern weekly and daily newspapers.

He said, “The News is an old and well-established newspaper, and any change will be to enhance its

place in the community.

La Feria is a good city and it deserves the continuation of a community newspaper.”

In 1952, nat Johnson became the business manager of the paper, which sold to the News Publishing Company, Inc. of San Benito. The same year, Mrs. O.H. Lackenmeyer of Cushing, Oklahoma headed the company as president while Mr. and Mrs. Steve M. Elam of San Benito were the other stockholders. Mr. Elam was manager of the corporation.

The present owner (in 1975-ed.) of the LA FERIA NEWS is Steve M. Elam of San Benito, who has owned the paper for some twenty three years, with Mrs. Glenna Elam Hayes as publisher and editor.

A worthy newspaper is a mirror of the activities, achievements and people of any city. The LA FERIA NEWS is such a newspaper.

Editor’s note – As previously noted in the text, this summary was current to 1975 when Eddie

Gathings McNail initially wrote The Bicentennial History of La Feria. Don and Mary Beth Wright bought the paper in 1997 and ran the newspaper until January 1, 2020 when new and current owner Landon Jennings took over the paper.

The La Feria News is published weekly and has a circulation of 5000. The paper is available online at www.laferianews.net.

La Feria PD gives out over 2,000 Gifts

Ceasar Rene Diaz, Police Chief for the City of La Feria shared on Thursday, December 22nd the Police Department raised over 2,000 toys. Operation Blue Star, as Chief Diaz shares has been going on for five years now.

“I’ve been the Chief for six years, but this is our fifth annual –Because of

Covid,” Chief says it was his idea to start Operation Blue Star and it seems to have been a great success.

Families were wrapped around the building just to have their kids receive a toy, take a picture with santa and greet one of the City members.

As with most of the City events, DJ Mando provided some holiday cheer to kids as they took pictures. The backdrops and decorations

to take a photo with Santa and the Grinch were supplied by It’s a Jolly Thing. Also, Chief Diaz mentions they were able to give out oranges to kids and families as well that were donated by MidValley Farms.

Afterward, any leftover toys they had were given to Fire Department to pass out along with 4,000 candy bags the Fire department put together. Chief Phinney

says “[between] Santa Maria, Bluetown, and La Feria,” he says “We had almost 30 people in the fire station Tuesday night; We made 4,000 candy bags.”

These were all distributed on Christmas day, Sunday December 25th.

Spreading Christmas Cheer

Felix De Anda is an individual that has been giving out toys to families for twenty years now, since 2002. He explains that when he had the idea to pass out gifts to those in need, his wife, Alma Delia de Anda was all for helping him with his goal.

Unfortunately, Alma De Anda passed away in February of 2021. Felix

says that she was as beautiful as she was in her youth. He loved her very much. And though there weren’t as many presents as the previous years, nevertheless he wrapped all the presents, put on the Santa suit, and spread the wonderful joy he knows best.

He says he asks people if they know someone that may not receive a toy this year and if they say yes, he gives them a ticket to give

to that family. Others might just be friends that Felix knows need it.

Felix says that he hopes the people that really need the cheer this year receive it. He talks concerning those that don’t get toys this year saying, “I want THEM to have toys.” That’s what really matters to him.

Felix says that he hopes to get enough toys that he can go to whole neighborhoods passing out gifts. He says that’s

what he used to do but because of the lack of toys he’s received the last few years, he hasn’t done that, and instead gives tickets to those that may really need them, then they can come and receive their gift. He says he wants to be able to give out more gifts to whole neighborhoods again, he has some that he used to give them out to and they were very appreciative.

Felix says that many

people don’t have reliable ways of transportation and that's why he wants to give more gifts out.

“They are neighborhoods that I would go to and they would always tell me, ‘Hey man, you’re the only one that comes and gives our kids toys to our kids.” De Anda got a bit emotional, saying “Yeah because I care for those kids,”

He said that they’re supposed to be bad neighborhoods, but that

they appreciated it because Felix would still go to those neighborhoods and spread cheer. Now, Felix doesn’t want to go running short and have kids disappointed.

Last year, some even donated canned foods, and many families were very thankful in receiving gifts and canned food for their families. Felix says he’s very thankful to Bill Bunton and all those that support and help donate to Toys for Tots.

The Confederacy has not fared well recently. Over 100 confederate statues and monuments have been removed. Unfortunately, there are plenty still standing. Most recently, in Roanoke, Virginia, a statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee is being replaced with one of Henrietta Lacks. Lacks was an African American woman who died in 1951 of cervical cancer. It is a fitting exchange.

Before her death, some of Lacks' cancerous cells were harvested, without her permission. In lab tests these cells proved to be unique in a couple of ways. First, the cells reproduce rapidly even for cancer cells. Second, the cells possess a relatively rare enzyme.

These two unique cellular characteristics enabled Lacks cells to assist in a number of medical breakthroughs, including the polio vaccine. Henrietta Lacks has been dead for over 70 years. Yet, Rebecca Skloot published a book titled, “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks.” Lacks lives on.

In Roanoke Virginia, the image of a woman who was instrumental in saving the lives of millions of people is replacing the image of a man who oversaw the death of thousands and who defended a system that enslaved people like Henrietta Lacks.

Many bemoan Robert E. Lee’s fall from grace. “He is part of history,” as some claim. That is true. However, it is a shameful history. Robert E. Lee may be history. But Henrietta Lacks is immortal. She lives on because she still gives life.

Jesus said, “Unless a seed falls to the ground and dies, it remains a single seed. But if it dies it produces many other seeds.” I am glad we are listening to Jesus. And I am glad that we have started to learn who belongs on a pedestal and who does not.

La Feria Soccer set to begin the 2022-23 season

The La Feria Lionettes are set to kick off another season of soccer. After the successes of last season’s team, the Lionettes look to repeat the success.

Last season, La Feria finished off 12-4 overall and 10-2 in District Play. After finishing second in 32-4A, La Feria captured a big win over Raymondville in the Bi-District round before falling to Calallen in the Area Round. So let’s see what lies ahead.

Non-District Action

will begin January 3rd as the Lionettes will host the Valley View Lady Tigers. The Lionettes had a lengthy non-district that included some big names such as Raymondville, and Brownsville Pace.

The Schedule for District play will begin January as the opponents for the Lionettes will take on teams as Port Isabel, Harmony School of Innovation, IDEA Sports Park, IDEA Frontier and Brownsville Jubilee. Of Course Last season, the Lionettes look to repeat the success of Last season’s

Staying unbeaten

District campaign.

On the Boys side of things, the La Feria Lions opened up the season with a 4-3 loss to Rio Hondo. Looking ahead to this season, La Feria will take on Smithson Valley and Santa Maria in non-district before beginning 32-4A play against the Tarpons on January 20. Last season, La Feria had a tough time, finishing 1-9 in District. Both the Lions and Lionettes are set to go in 2022-23 with an open mind to capture district.

Warriors improve to 4-0 in District Play.

The Santa Rosa Warriors knocked off the Progreso Red Ants for another round of District 32-3A play. Heading into the matchup, Santa Rosa and Progreso were both 3-0 heading into the game. Last season, Santa Rosa swept Progreso on their way to the 32-3A District Title.

Early on, Santa Rosa jumped ahead to a 14-9

lead at the end of the first quarter, thanks to efficient offense. After trailing by five after the end first, the Red Ants had a surge of offense in the second quarter, outscoring Santa Rosa 20-15. Despite being outscored, Santa Rosa still played enough defense to keep the game tied at 29 heading into halftime.

Santa Rosa played a dominant offense and defense in the third quarter. Santa Rosa led

a majority of the third quarter and eventually broke the game open. Santa Rosa outscored the Red Ants 20-9 to lead 4938 at the end of the third. Santa Rosa continued the offense in the fourth quarter and held off an offensive surge by Progreso to win 75-61.

Santa Rosa improved to 11-7 on the season and 4-0 in District 32-3A play.

A Little Lost by Selene Olguin

The walls and ceiling are grey; a small stick is all I have to play. Frigid wind chills me to the bone, where will this young child find a home?

Vivid colors flood my view, warm yellows, reds, greens, and blue. People all gather around with joy and laughter is the only sound. Millions of smells fill the air, candle flame, and sweet rich foods. The warmth of this place enchants me, then the bite of cold wakes me to where I really am, reality.

The Valley escaped a destructive frost this past week as the coldest weather of the season blew in on the heels of a Norther which hit La Feria Sunday morning. The norther followed a couple of days of strong southerly winds and warm weather.

Sunday's cold front brought along a little drizzle, but Monday night, thunder, and lightning

DECEMBER 2022

came with the rain, something rather unusual (to borrow a California word) for this time of year.

The thermometer sank to the low thirties most every night since Sunday, but cloudy weather and continued wind from the north kept it from going to the freezing point.

Some hope for warmer weather is held out by the weather bureau, as

it is predicted that the temperatures will warm up late today and Friday.

But, as this is written, the fingers are still stiff with the cold.

The whole nation is gripped in a prolonged cold wave, one of the most severe and of widest duration since the winter of 1936 according to reports.

Why, it's even cold in

Florida.

The Sun Bowl football game in El Paso was played in snow and ice, and icy roads covered most of Texas and the nation, getting as close to the Valley as Rivera, reported one traveler.

As far as we could learn, the Valley was the warmest place in the nation. If that is any comfort to our readers.
