TSTC SkillsUSA Gold Medalists Prepare for National Competition (HARLINGEN, Texas) - Some Texas State Technical College students are flying high because as SkillsUSA gold medalists they will advance to the SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference that will be held June 20-24, 2022, in Atlanta, Georgia.

Alfredo Aldape, Omar Escalon, Carina Garcia, Caleb Garza, Carlos Lara, Adrian Nacianceno, Alfredo Martinez, Isela Munoz and Raymundo Salinas will represent TSTC’s Harlingen campus.

“Having the opportunity to compete in nationals in June is one of the most exciting moments for our students and TSTC

Nacianceno, of Edinburg, represented TSTC’s Aircraft Powerplant Technology program in aviation maintenance. He said his success resulted from general aviation studies and the research provided by his instructors.

“I was in Houston

the week prior to the competition to take an exam to earn my license in aircraft airframe,” he said. “Luck was in my favor because what I studied for was the project I did in competition.”

Nacianceno said he is anxious to compete again.

Medalists Prepare for National Competition CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1

represented TSTC’s Vocational Nursing program in medical math.

She said being enrolled in that course during the fall semester was her key to success.

“The prior knowledge I had in that course became my review,” she said. “But I also reviewed practice exams and continued to repeat those with my instructors.”

Munoz said the next round is important to her.

“I am representing my program for TSTC in Harlingen, and that is a big responsibility,” she said. “I am nervous, but I am ready for the experience.”

Salinas, of Harlingen, also represented TSTC’s Vocational Nursing program, but in medical terminology. His 15 years of experience in health care played a key factor.

“I worked at a family practice in Tamaulipas,

Mexico,” he said.

“A few years later I worked as a phlebotomy and medical assistant instructor at an area technical school.

Now I work at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen. My professional experience, the lesson plans and the worksheets my instructor (Beyda) Ramirez provides have benefited me.”

Salinas said he knows that the final round will be much more competitive.

“I am speed-testing to prepare,” he said. “My course book has these small tests. I am training my brain by answering questions in less than two minutes and remembering key words.”

Escalon, of La Feria, represented TSTC’s Welding Technology program in Welding Fabrication with fellow program students Garza and Lara.

He said their preparation corresponds to the welding assignments.

“Our SkillsUSA

advisor, Mr. (Juan) Avila, has prepared us with everything we need,” he said. “We mimic every detail of what our instructors demonstrate, and it has worked.”

Escalon, Garza and Lara are aware that receiving a top honor will initiate a buzz for the program.

“We were informed it is the first time in probably 10 years welding students will compete at the national level,” he said. “It was our first time competing at the state competition. So we are looking forward to the competition in June.”

The SkillsUSA platform provides postsecondary students with the opportunity to demonstrate the skills they have acquired in their education. The national level raises the bar. It provides them with a unique credential of top honors that may help them get hired in the Texas workforce.

First Baptist Church, La Feria Sunday will be Mother’s Day. I am one of the lucky ones who has a wonderful mother for whom I can still buy flowers. I am also one of the lucky ones who is married to a great mother and grandmother.

I have a lot to celebrate.

Sunday, I will also think of the mothers of Ukraine. Some of them have lost their children.

Some of the children have lost their mothers. There will be no flowers or candy there.

I recently read about some of the mothers of Ukraine who were out of the country when Putin invaded. They are returning to a battlefield in search of their children. Most mothers are like that.

Remember in the Bible the story of two mothers who fought over a baby. They both claimed that the child was theirs. The case went before King Solomon. He ordered the baby divided, half going to each mother.

“Yes, divide the baby among us,” said one mother.

“No, let the child live. Give the infant to her,” said the other mother. Then, Solomon knew the real mother was the one who would rather her child live with someone else than to die.

A good mother is someone who puts the welfare of her child ahead of her own. Like Christ, she will sacrifice so her child can live. We often call God our father. But God is just as much our mother.

By Ruben Rodriguez Rio Sports Live The UTRGV Vaqueros played host to the #10 Ranked Texas Longhorns of the Big 12 Conference.

While The Vaqueros and Longhorns are no strangers to each other, this game was more special. This matchup marked the Texas Longhorns’ first visit to Edinburg since 1971. This game also marked a special homecoming for former McHi Bulldog Aaron Nixon. A brief tale of the

tap between Texas and UTRGV, The Longhorns and Vaqueros have faced off 59 times, with Texas leading the All Time Series 53-6.

The Longhorns, who are coming off a great run in the 2021 College World Series, came into this matchup with an overall record of 30-13, and a 9-6 record in Big 12 Play.

The Vaqueros were 23-16 overall and held a WAC Record of 9-9. Texas was looking to keep their win

streak alive after a sweep over Baylor while the Vaqueros were coming off a series victory over Abilene Christian University.

After a defensive start, the Longhorns got the scoring started in the Top of the second inning as Kimble Schuessler delivered an RBI Single, bringing in Skyler Messinger who collected Texas’ first hit of the game with a standup double.

inning that saw an RBI Single by Austin Todd and then a two RBI Single by Ivan Melendez to make it a 5-0 lead.

Besides on offense, Texas was dominant defensively, holding UTRGV scoreless and hitless until the bottom of the 6th inning. Vaquero Second Baseman Diego Ramirez delivered an RBI Single. Texas Would later pick up two more runs off back to back RBIs from Austin Todd and Ivan Melendez, who both had their second RBIs of the night. Texas would take the win 7-2 in front of a packed crowd.

The Highlight of

the night came when Sophomore Pitcher Aaron Nixon would come in to get the final out of the game.

The McHi Product entered to a standing ovation of 6, 418 Texas and UTRGV Fans.

“It was a great experience to play in front of my family and friends, I don’t get to come much anymore.” Nixon on taking the field back in the Valley.

“The Valley will always be my home, I’m a Valley Boy for life, I loved seeing everyone again and it will be something i never forget.”

Aaron Nixon has been a core component of the

Texas Bullpen in his first two seasons in the Burnt Orange of Texas. This Season, Nixon has an ERA of 3.09, has recorded 31 strikeouts. Careerwise at Texas, the sophomore holds an ERA of 2.51, and has recorded 66 strikeouts.

Truly an amazing night for Baseball fans across the Rio Grande Valley. A Night that saw the return of RGV Product Aaron Nixon, and the Return of The Texas Longhorns to the Valley, The Vaqueros prepare for their next conference series against Tarleton State.

Texas will resume Big 12 play against #8 ranked Oklahoma State.

The La Feria Lionettes have captured the District 32-4A Crown and set to begin the 2022 Texas High School Softball State Playoffs. As the number one seed, the Lionettes are set to face off against the 4th seed Zapata Lady Hawks of District 31-4A. After going 12-10 during a grueling Non-District schedule that has seen La Feria battle with Valley Powerhouses such as Weslaco East, Harlingen South and San Benito. The purpose for a tough nondistrict has always been scheduled to prepare a team for District Play and a possible playoff appearance, and for the Lionettes, it certainly has done its job. La Feria currently sits on top of District 32-4A

with a stellar 5-0 record.

The Lionettes have had their fare share of competition in the past from contenders Rio Hondo, Port Isabel and Raymondville, But La Feria has faced off and defeated challengers of all kind and have shown they can play ball with some of the Valley’s Best and still remain as the number one seed in District 32-4A, Some of the Lionettes Biggest victories have been 15-4 over Rio Hondo in the 32-4A opener on March 8, and a huge 15-4 win over Raymondville on March 11. La Feria then defeated Grulla 17-1 on March 22 and then Hidalgo 19-8 on March 25. La Feria then faced off against the tough Port Isabel Lady Tarpons in a close one 4-2 on March 29 to remain perfect through

the first half of district play.

Starting off the second half of 32-4A. La Feria continued their winning ways with a big win over Rio Hondo 12-2 on April 1, and a major 17-8 victory against Raymondville April 8. To Close out the regular season La Feria soundly defeated Hidalgo 21-2 on April 15, then defeated Port Isabel 10-3 on April 19 to become the undefeated District 32-4A Champions.

The rest of the District 32-4A representatives include Port Isabel who will take on Alice, Raymondville who will Take on Tuloso-Midway, and Hidalgo, who will take on Calallen. In what is shaping to be a fun postseason, the Lionettes look to punch their ticket to Austin.

(StatePoint) Driving fatalities in the United States are at the highest point since 2008, yet new research reveals that many are unaware of the enhanced risk and are actively making choices that increase the danger on our roads.

According to a new survey from Travelers, 57% of people think roadway safety is unchanged since before the pandemic. At the same time, over a third of drivers have experienced a near-miss because they were distracted while driving.

Our devices are a large part of the problem. Onethird of respondents believe it is acceptable to use technology while driving and even more admit to doing so -- 79% say they have made or received a phone call while driving, 74% have looked at map directions on a cell phone and 56% have read a

text message or email. A growing number of drivers are also taking to social media, with 29% admitting to recording videos or taking photos using their smartphone, a number that’s increased since 2019 along with the rise of TikTok and other social media platforms.

“When you’re behind the wheel, every second matters, and anything that occupies your mind or vision is a distraction,” says Chris Hayes, assistant vice president of Transportation and Risk Control at Travelers. “While it’s tempting to use your phone, especially when it’s alerting you to texts and calls, doing so is dangerous to you, your passengers and others on the road.”

To help put a stop to distracted driving, Travelers is offering the following tips: • Turn off notifications: Setting your phone to “do

not disturb” before you begin driving is a good idea, as it can help prevent you from being tempted to check your phone for new notifications.

• Prepare beforehand: Check directions or set your GPS before you begin driving. Put your favorite playlist or radio station on before you hit the road.

• Let it wait: Do not make calls, text or otherwise manipulate your phone while driving. Even hands-free calls can pull your focus from the road.

If you need to text, email, make a call, or use your phone for any other reason, pull over first.

• Recruit a passenger: Rely on your passengers to handle technology-related tasks, such as checking GPS, changing the music or radio station, and answering calls or texts.

• Speak up: Consider asking a distracted driver to put down their device.
