First Baptist Church, La Feria There was an old man who confessed, “These days I think more about the ‘here after.’” Then he explained, I walk into a room, scratch my head, and ask, “Now, what did I come in here after?” The media is reporting people are talking and thinking a lot more about the hereafter. In particular, those thoughts relate to the end of time. You can hear expressions like, “I do not think this old world is going to last much longer.” Or, “I cannot imagine that the Lord will tarry.” Or, “It feels like the end times.” Some even use the R word. “Rapture!” Certainly, we have been through enough that the end might appear near. One pandemic is leaving but is another coming? Russia’s aggression sounds like the Biblical allusions to Gog and Magog and kings of the North. The January 6 attack on the Capitol and a contested presidential election, all of these events fuel apocalyptic paranoia. Is it the end? People talk about the rapture but the idea is hard to find in the Bible. Jesus never used the word. Yet, he did say this about the end. “You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come.” It is not the end. Keep living! -Mark S. Ross DMin.

Standing Up for Women In A Post Roe v Wade Texas

[A PERSONAL MESSAGE FROM]

Morgan LaMantia

I grew up in South Texas. I value family and share many traditional values. But I also grew up one of five sisters. From medicine to business, and from law to teaching we’ve proven we can do anything we set our minds to. I believe if you value family, you need to respect women and their decisions. But now Texas has one of the harshest anti-abortion bans in the country. I oppose it, but until it’s overturned, here is where I will focus to protect women in a post Roe v Wade Texas.

Amend the law to make exceptions for rape and incest. Place an age limit, so what happened in Ohio when a 10-year-old girl was raped does not happen here. Protect doctors from criminal prosecution when they intervene to protect the life of the mother. Protect Emergency Contraception, especially for victims of sexual assault. Promote sex education and ensure both young men and women understand the meaning of consent and how to protect themselves.. I’ll always let you know where I stand. And on Texas’ extreme abortion ban, I oppose it. But if I can’t get perfection, I’ll take progress, because women’s lives are at stake.

Big Win for The Roll Down the Homestretch Pride By Ruben Rodriguez La Feria News

La Feria defeats Hidalgo in a District Thriller By Ruben Rodriguez La Feria News The La Feria Lions faced off against the Hidalgo Pirates in another round of District 16-4A D1 Play. Currently at 0-3 in District, La Feria is needing a win to keep their postseason hopes alive. After three straight losses to Alice, TulosoMidway and Calallen, the Lions looked to turn the tide against the Hidalgo Pirates. La Feria and Hidalgo are certainly no strangers to each other as both teams have met in big matchups over the years. Last Season, La Feria and Hidalgo faced off in an exciting matchup that saw the Lions win and capture the 16-4A DI title. La Feria’s offense took

over as the Lions quickly scored two touchdowns to lead 14-0 in the first quarter. Thanks to a solid defense, the Lions were able to shutdown Hidalgo in the first quarter. Hidalgo would pick up their first touchdown of the night in the second quarter but again were outscored by La Feria 13-7 in the second quarter. The Lions scored two touchdowns but missed the PAT to lead 27-7 at the half. Hidalgo would strike first, scoring on their opening drive of the second half. To respond, La Feria picked up another touchdown in the third quarter and tacked on a two point conversion. Later in the quarter Hidalgo would then score another

touchdown but missed the PAT to trail 35-20 at the end of the fourth. La Feria despite a strong offense, was not able to score as Hidalgo played standout on both sides of the ball. Hidalgo would score again in the fourth quarter, adding a touchdown and two point conversion in the process to make it 35-28. La Feria tried to control Hidalgo defensively but the Pirates led the charge down field, scoring a touchdown. Hidalgo would then try a two point conversion for the win, but The Lions’ defense came up big, outlasting Hidalgo 35-34. Photos from LaFeriaISD Twitter

The La Feria Lionettes continue District 32-4A play throughout the 2022 season. Sitting at 5-3 in district play, La Feria has knocked off some key opponents. In District Play, La Feria has beaten Raymondville, Brownsville Jubilee and

HSI in sweep fashion. La Feria has also beaten Grulla in five sets 3-2, and Port Isabel in four sets. La Feria’s three losses have come to Zapata, Grulla and Hidalgo. Looking ahead to the remainder of 32-4A play, La Feria will take on Jubilee, Harmony School of Innovation, and Port Isabel before wrapping up the regular season.

In 2021, La Feria finished District play with a record of 6-3, a larger district that included Rio Hondo as well. Finishing as the second seed, La Feria took on 31-4A’s three seed Alice, who swept the Lionettes. This year, La Feria plans to punch their ticket to the postseason as we wind down the regular season.

OBITUARY

Larry Demott Williams June 16, 1937 - October 7, 2022

The Next Chapter Poem Familiar by James E. Arnold The drifting tears From cloudy skies Fall to my path And cool my eyes To clean the earth To let plants be That grow to heaven Such joy to see And as my shoulder Feels gentle rain I’m really glad It’s back again.

On Friday, October 7, 2022, Larry DeMott Williams of La Feria; loving husband and father, and grandfather; died at the age of 85. Larry was born on June 16,1937 in Pennsville, Ohio. He married Doris Evelyn Reeder on November 30, 1958. They had one child, Holly Ann Williams. Larry retired from a career at Sears after forty years of service as a mechanic. He mowed lawns for friends in his retirement community, and also assisted them with handyman services. Larry was known for being ready to lend a hand. He was a member of the church of Christ. He blessed the church with countless acts of maintenance and renovations to their building at 912 Parker Road over the years. Larry was preceded in death by his father, Dana Williams; his mother, Jo Hopper Williams; as well as his sister, Jan Williams; and, his only child, Holly Ann Duncan. He is survived by his wife, Doris Evelyn; his sister, Dawn Scott (Kieth) of Duncan Falls, Ohio; and his grandson, Eric Gene Duncan.
