A

t The King’s School, we are committed to preparing our young men to take their place in the workforce or go on to further studies. Every student learns differently and there is no ‘onesize-fits-all’ approach to learning. For some students, learning takes place through practical experiences at school or in the workplace. Vocational Education and Training (VET) courses are accredited by the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) and can count towards a Record of School Achievement (RoSA) and NSW Higher School Certificate (HSC). These courses provide students with a practical hands-on style of learning, allowing them to achieve success in their chosen area while providing them with real-world experience and work-ready qualifications.

VET programs in schools have significantly increased over the past decade, offering students the opportunity to gain a nationally recognised Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) Certificate I, II or III at school, whilst completing their Higher School Certificate. VET courses not only appeal to the interests and aptitudes of young people, but they also reflect the realities of the job market and its shifting demands for skills and training. The provision of industry and university-recognised VET courses expand opportunities for our students and enables them to move into the workforce with skills and confidence. a dedicated team of VET professionals, who regularly audit each School’s performance against the National Standards of Registered Training Operations (RTOs). These courses are designed to complement student interests, school specialisations, and provide experiences that lead to the development of transferable skills. Whilst studying VET courses, students are required to apply their classroom learned industry skills in a real work environment, by completing mandatory work placement. Here at The King’s School, we have a rich diversity of relationships that exist amongst our community. We are currently establishing strong partnerships within the School community and with local businesses and industries. These relationships will provide a platform for high-quality work placement opportunities for our boys. Not only do Stage 6 VET courses contribute to the HSC, some can also contribute towards the ATAR. This pathway gives young people a significant advantage as they transition to further studies and work.

Richard Phelps

R

ichard began his career as a licenced landscaper, working on residential and commercial landscape projects. It was through teaching Landscape Trade at TAFE that Richard discovered an interest in teaching. In 2002 Richard received a scholarship from the Department of Education to become a VET teacher. Before joining The King’s School, Richard taught and supported the introduction and implementation of a wide variety of VET subjects in Western Sydney secondary schools.

Richard believes it is important to have a strong VET portfolio that offers a variety of courses for our students. “VET courses not only contribute to a student’s HSC mark, but they also provide stepping stones into future career opportunities,” says Richard. While VET courses have been an optional pathway for HSC students for many years, the opportunity to offer them on-site is relatively new and unique. “The King’s School is committed to supporting VET programs on campus. We have dedicated classrooms and workshops for the practical, hands-on lessons.”

Where a course is not available on-site, students can access quality education as part of the School’s connections with the Key Alliance Network. “King’s is an affiliated member of the Key Alliance Network, which means we can access courses through like-minded schools, such as the Automotive course which is offered at Penrith Christian School”. The VET courses not only provide a platform for students who already have a clear career goal, but they also provide practical life skills that will stay with the boys long after school. “I think it’s important to know that students who do well in a VET subject can also achieve a great ATAR,” says Richard.

“It is a joy to be a part of shaping students’ future careers, and it is wonderful to know that what they learn at King’s through the VET program can have a positive impact on how our Kingsmen contribute to society”.

Construction has arrived at King’s

T

he Certificate II in Construction Pathway is an ATAR eligible, hands-on course that is proving to be a popular choice for students at The King’s School.

“Our Construction students are learning to plan and sequence a job, conduct themselves on a worksite and develop key problem-solving skills that can translate to a whole range of industries,” says Richard. The course offers many real-world lessons in construction, including skills like bricklaying, wall framing, and carpentry skills such as deck building. “The boys get so much satisfaction out of the work they are doing. Many of the projects are conducted around the campus, like building garden beds for the grounds. By contributing to the School environment, students have a real sense of achievement and pride,” says Richard. Many of the students participating in the Construction course have a keen interest in pursuing a career in the Construction Industry. Other students see the course as an opportunity to have a break from the laptop and learn some building skills that they will continue to use for a lifetime. The Certificate II in Construction Pathways gives students an industry-recognised qualification, which allows them to go straight into the trade, or pursue further studies. “Like any ATAR recognised VET course, students who perform well can still receive an excellent ATAR and go on to study at University or TAFE,” says Richard. The King’s School is invested in the future of Construction, with plans for dedicated classrooms and workshop areas where students can learn how to operate tools and participate in practical lessons, regardless of the weather.

KING’S GRADUATE

Jack Parsons VET CO URSE: H O SPI TALI TY

W

hen Jack sat down to work out his subject choices for the HSC, he already had a clear vision of pursuing a career in hospitality.

When he realised he could graduate school with not only an ATAR, but a Certificate II in Hospitality, his only question was, “Where do I sign up?”. For Jack, the VET course gave him the opportunity to kick-start his career, and a pathway to his future studies in the industry of his dreams. And it did just that! Upon graduation, Jack received seven offers from various universities and colleges, including a scholarship with The International College of Management Sydney (ICMS) to study a Bachelor of Hospitality Management, which he happily accepted. “I was overwhelmed by the number of University offers I received. The positive of completing a VET course at school is you already have industry recognised credentials before you step into the real world,” says Jack. Jack had a vision of working in a service-based industry and knew that hospitality provided global opportunities. “I enjoy putting a smile on people’s faces and giving them an experience they won’t forget. The course offered many practical experiences that gave me a real sense of what it feels like to work in the industry.” A highlight for Jack was Service Week, where he practiced his skills as a server and bartender for parents and other members of the King’s community. “I really enjoyed those practical experiences where I had the opportunity to serve new and familiar faces. It was a true buzz and felt like a real gig. It was those practical experiences where I realised I was on the right track with my future goals,” says Jack. Jack is now studying at The International College of Management Sydney and has secured a part-time industry job. His long-term goals are to work in hospitality management, and he one day hopes to own a cocktail bar. “I believe the scholarship with ICMS was a result of both the work I put into my studies, as well as the co-curricular activities I participated in at King’s. Activities like theatre performances, leadership opportunities and involvement in charity events, played a big part in developing my character and building self-confidence. Because of those experiences, I was able to speak professionally and confidently during scholarship interviews, and from there my passion for hospitality shone through.”

KING’S GRADUATE

Tom McGlashan V E T C O UR S E : I N F O R M AT I O N A ND D I GITAL T E C HN O L O G Y

F

or Tom, the Digital Animation course was a muchwelcomed change in pace from his other HSC subjects. The course gave him creative freedom to refine his skills in concept art, grow his portfolio with real-life industry work, and graduate school with a Certificate III in Information and Digital Technology.

When entering his senior years at school, Tom was fairly certain that he wanted to pursue a career in the entertainment industry. Through guidance from teachers and mentors at the School, Tom realised the VET course would provide him with an opportunity to explore the industry and discover what his options were. “Through the VET course, I was lucky to have the opportunity to work onsite with an animation company where I produced concept art for shows, movies and games. To be able to produce work that contributed to real-life projects was a dream come true,” says Tom. Not only did Tom have the opportunity to gain industry experience, the course also enabled him the time to focus on developing his creative skills. “During work experience, I would be given a brief from the Director, and from there I was responsible for creating the visual animations. I felt like I was respected to use my creative skills freely, in a professional environment. It was such a great experience!” The course assessments also gave Tom creative freedom to explore any concept of interest. “When it came to assignments, we were given parameters, however, the course encouraged creative freedom and really pushed us to take control of our art. You could pursue any topic or theme that interested you.” Tom graduated from King’s with a clear vision for his future, and the credentials to help him kick-start his career in digital art. “Getting into the industry is my focus, so I’m taking a gap year to work on developing my art skills. I realised through the VET course that you need a strong portfolio in order to be recognised. So, I’m refining my skills through self-learning as well as some online studies.” As a successful VET student, Tom has some valuable tips for boys looking to engage with VET courses offered at locations outside the School. “It was cool to go into a different learning environment. I found it quite relaxing and it gave me insight into the world outside King’s. However, you are missing out on other classes, so my best tip is to use study periods to catch up, so you don’t fall behind on other subjects. It is all about balance.”

FAQS 1

HOW DO VET COURSES DIFFER FROM OTHER COURSES OFFERED AT SCHOOL AND HOW ARE STUDENTS ASSESSED IN VET COURSES? VET courses differ from other courses offered at school as they are ‘competency’ based. This means that students are provided with the necessary training, skills and knowledge required by industry. The student’s compentency is then assesed against these industry standards. Demonstrating competency indicates the student can perform the task or show an understanding of the level required by the industry standards. When a student can successfully demonstrate they are competent against a particular standard, they will be judged as “competent”. There is no pass/fail. Students are either “competent” or “not yet competent”.

CAN A VET COURSE CONTRIBUTE TO A STUDENT’S AUSTRALIAN TERTIARY ADMISSION RANK (ATAR)? VET courses are offered under two categories: 1. B oard Developed VET Courses (courses within Industry Curriculum Frameworks – Category B). These courses have optional exams and consequently CAN contribute towards a student’s ATAR, if the final examination is sat. Courses include: • • • • • •

Students will have a number of opportunities throughout the course to demonstrate competency. The assessment process does not compare a student’s progress against another, yet compares each individual against the “competence” requirements set by industry. Competencies can be assessed either in class or on work placement, through observations, written assignments, portfolios, tests, etc.

Board Endorsed Courses (generally locally designed courses delivered by schools, TAFE NSW, and other Registered Training Organisations), CAN contribute unit credit towards a student’s HSC, however, do NOT count to their ATAR. HOW MANY VET COURSES CAN A STUDENT TAKE? The number of VET courses studied depends on whether the student wishes to receive an ATAR. • ATAR Student: a student wishing to receive an ATAR can only have ONE Category B course count towards their final 10 units of study and ATAR. They can complete an additional VET course (total 12 units) however, that course will not count towards their ATAR. They will still have the opportunity to gain a Certificate or Statement of Attainment for that course.

on ATAR student: a student not wishing to receive an N ATAR can complete up to three VET courses (Depending on the days on which the courses are delivered).

WHAT QUALIFICATION AND CERTIFICATES CAN YOU ACHIEVE AT THE END OF A VET COURSE? Depending on the course completed and the units of competency achieved, a student can receive an Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) Certificate I, II or III.

IS THERE A FINAL HSC EXAMINATION? There is an optional external examination offered for students undertaking any Board Developed Courses – NESA framework courses. If a student DOES NOT wish to receive an ATAR, then they are not required to sit the final examination.

required to complete 35 hours of work placement for every 120 hours of course work for a total of 70 hours over a 2 year course. If a student does not complete work placement, they will not meet NESA requirements and the course will not count towards their HSC/ATAR.

WHAT IS AN RTO AND WHO IS OUR RTO? Registered Training Organisations (RTO) are training providers registered by the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) to deliver VET services. VET courses can only be delivered by RTOs that meet national standards and have the relevant qualification and units of competency on their scope of

However, if a student wants their VET course to count towards the calculation of their ATAR, then they MUST sit the formal examination at the end of the year.

WHAT IS WORK PLACEMENT? Work placement is an opportunity for students to apply their learned industry skills in a real work environment. Work placement hour requirements vary between courses; however, students are required to complete the mandatory placements in their field to demonstrate and enhance their classroom learnt skills in a real workplace setting. Generally, students are

If a student does not achieve all of the units of competency throughout the course or if the course selected does not cover all competencies within that Certificate, the student will achieve a Statement of Attainment towards the Qualification. A Statement of Attainment is a document which lists only the units of competency that the student achieved as part of their course. These Certificate/Statement of Attainment documents will be recognised in all eight states/territories in Australia.

WHAT IS A UNIQUE STUDENT IDENTIFIER (USI) FOR VET? Students studying a VET course are required to have a Unique Student Identifier (USI). A USI is an account or reference number that will allow all a student’s training records, entered in the national VET data collection, to be linked. The USI makes it easier to find, collate and authenticate your VET achievements into a single transcript. It will also ensure that a student’s VET records are not lost.

The USI will be available online and at no cost to the student. This USI will stay with a student for life and be recorded with any nationally recognised VET courses undertaken in the future.
