farewell party for outgoing county-court-atlaw judge Spencer Brown. “He could run his court and sleep through it all and still get it done,” said Kerr County Commissioner H.A. “Buster” Baldwin, who

has known Brown for decades and publicly thanked the man for his service. A portrait of Brown unveiled at the party will be hung in the courthouse alongside those of other previous judges.

Brown thanked everyone and said the past 40 years of working in various legal professions in Kerr County have been a blessing. “I can’t say that enough,” Brown said. “I just appreciate what the people at the

A Hal Peterson Middle School student’s biggest dream came true three years ago when the Make-A-Wish Foundation sent him and his family to Walt Disney World to ride a roller coaster. To pay it forward and help other kids, Zackary Reyna collected more than 2,000 letters to Santa for the Macy’s “Believe” campaign last year. This year, he more than tripled that amount, collecting 6,121 letters. The department store’s campaign donates $1 to the Make-A-Wish Foundation for every stamped “Dear Santa” letter they receive. Zackary and his mother, Soyla Reyna, delivered the letters collected this year to the Macy’s at North Star Mall in San Antonio Friday on national “Believe” day. Macy’s

caitlin.clark@dailytimes.com MOUNTAIN HOME — Christmas came early at the Y.O. Ranch last week when it welcomed a nearly 6-foot-tall, 80-pound baby girl into the world. Born Dec. 5 at about 1:40 p.m., the new baby giraffe joins her mom, 13-year-old Carlita, and sister, 4-yearold Bella, at the ranch in Mountain Home. Debbie Hagebusch, director of tourism and wildlife for the ranch, said the baby is a “tiny little thing” now, but won’t stay small for much longer. Baby giraffes can grow up to an inch a day, Hagebusch said, and are about 18 feet tall once fully grown. The baby, who has not yet been named, took awhile to arrive, but has been full of energy since the day she was born. “I came at about 11:30 a.m. just to check on (Carlita), knowing she was about to give birth, and all of a sudden a little leg popped out,” Hagebusch said. Hagebusch sat with Carlita for about two hours before the baby finally made her arrival. “An hour after she was born, she walked right up to me and gave me a little kiss,” Hagebusch said.

177 pairs of jeans donated during drive

Visit the Y.O. Ranch’s Facebook page to leave a name suggestion for the new baby giraffe. Ranch staff members will pick the winner Monday.

Students at Our Lady of the Hills Regional Catholic High School recently donated pairs of jeans to three local organizations after hosting a jeans drive through the month of November. Key Club members collected the jeans Nov. 3 through Dec. 1 after a student’s mother heard about a similar drive in San Antonio. The students decided the effort also would be beneficial to the Kerrville community. Susie McCalla, director of admissions for Our Lady of the Hills, said 177 pairs of gently worn and clean jeans were collected at four drop-off points around town. The women’s and children’s jeans were distributed Tuesday to the Pregnancy Resource Center and Christian Women’s Job Corps of Kerr County, and the men’s jeans were taken to the St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store.
