Fighting the wedding day jitters By Donna Gable Hatch donna.hatch@dailytimes.com The date has been set, the gown has been purchased, the invitations have been sent and the venue has been selected. The only thing left is the walk down the aisle. Whether it’s 20 feet or 200 feet, it can be an intimidating prospect — and the thought can cause some brides to feel like bolting for the door. “The before-wedding jitters is a kind of social anxiety that is absolutely normal,” Diane Fitch, a licensed marriage and family therapist, said. “It doesn’t mean you’re not in love or you don’t want to get married.” The elation that comes with having a diamond ring slipped on the finger often is followed with a cacophony of alarm — so much to do in so little time, Fitch said. All brides will find some aspect of wedding planning nerve-rattling, “but a little mindful meditation goes a long way in helping to de-stress.” The key, Fitch said, is for each woman to decompress in the way that works best for her — and don’t neglect the guy in the tux, or you could end up with a groomzilla, which would compound the stress and, potentially, unhinge the relationship. “It’s my personal opinion, and it’s my professional opinion, that after the engagement is made, some women abandon their relationship in favor of planning the wedding,” she said. “If people put more energy into nurturing their relationship as they do in arranging the wedding, more couples would make it past the first year. When a couple is going to get married, the most

Do we even want children? Who will handle the finances? All those kind of things that people take for granted that the other person will think the way they do,” Fitch said. “I would strongly recommend not only a longer engagement but also waiting at least six months after the engagement is made to start planning the wedding.” Even if the topics have come up while dating, the nebulous notions of the potential dynamics begin to form into reality as the wedding day

Having God bless a relationship is important.” Trouble in paradise

It might not always be the groom — or the prospect of a life together — that sets the stage for stress. Even the most serene brides-tobe can be pushed to the brink by a difficult bridesmaid who pouts through every fitting, a budget that’s growing way out of control or everyday tension at work.

The details of the big day — from the size and cost of the wedding down to the minutia — often are a source of stress. “A lot of people mortgage their future on the cost of the wedding, and if something goes wrong during the planning of the event, it’s a catastrophe,” Fitch said. “The most important thing is that the wedding be meaningful. The people in the relationship need to be the number one concern, always.” For some, that means writing and reciting their own vows, but even that can be stressful. “People need to think that through: Standing up in front of 200 or 300 people and say something really personal, and that can be unnerving,” Fitch said. “I would suggest instead that the bride and groom write each other a beautiful personal letter, and give it to each other before the ceremony. Don’t plan a wedding that is so big that it overshadows the love.” Kathrine A. Seale, a licensed professional counselor, said it’s imperative for brides to minimize stress — and the best way to do that might be to allow someone else to plan the big day. A professional wedding

2x6 Dietert Center 242921

planner, she said, can be a “mental savior.” “Let them do the grunt work of carrying out your details for you, while you simply show up for the enjoyment of each occasion that is wedding-related,” Seale said. But, she cautioned, some jitters may actually be an indication that something needs to be resolved. “I believe that jitters and doubt are very normal. I believe they are our intuition talking to us, calling us to become very aware of this moment to be sure that we do not take the decision lightly or continue to sweep important matters ‘under the rug.’ It might be helpful, if the doubts are very strong, to call in a wise counselor, relative or friend to help you sort out from where the fear is coming,” Seale said. A wedding is not a challenge to be conquered, she said. “It is a celebration and personal marker of an important layer of life and love. If it is not the right decision right now, do not force yourself to go through the motions,” Seale said. “It will cost you, and many others, much turmoil and wasted time and money down the road. A divorce, or an unhappy marriage, is much harder to experience than saying, ‘I’ve changed my mind and do not think I should marry you right now.’” The key, Seale said, “is to listen to yourself, and let your intuition be your guide. Seek the help of a trusted professional who can help you sort through your doubts if they are strong. Then, be true to yourself in the decision you are making, whether it is to continue to be married or to curtail the proceedings. Jump whole-heartedly into the decision you make, and enjoy this beautiful time of your life.”

Tips to avoid wedding stress ➤ Plan a date night with your fiancé — no wedding talk

allowed. ➤ Plan a girls’ night out — again, no wedding talk allowed. ➤ Decompress at a day spa. That doesn’t mean you have to shell out for a full day at the spa, which can be costly. Even a pedicure, which includes some light massage of the feet and calves, can be enough to take the edge off. ➤ Make time for exercise — even a quiet walk in the fresh air can go a long way in restoring inner peace. ➤ Do something nice for your groom-to-be. Make sure he feels included in your post-ring life. ➤ Read a good book — just steer clear of weddingoriented novels. ➤ Keep a journal — but make sure it contains the blessings and not the curses of the pre-wedding experience.

Find ways to save dollars that make sense James LaCombe james.lacombe@dailytimes.com Couples who are planning a wedding don’t need to break the bank to make the day memorable. Following some simple tips — like not having a wedding on a Saturday — can save a small fortune. “This is a big money-saving tip — and I only usually get one or two brides a year that do this — is to have the ceremony on a Friday or a Sunday,” Becky Priour, owner of Especially Yours, said. “One of the biggest costs (for a wedding) is the venue, and a lot of them ... will charge you less for a Friday or Sunday, because they’re booked pretty solid on Saturdays, and they don’t have to lower their rates.” Florists also will be more lenient on pricing when they are less busy, said Priour, who has owned her Kerrvillebased flower and gift shop since 2002 and has helped countless couples plan their wedding. That means avoid planning the big day around major giftgiving holidays, such as Christmas, Valentine’s Day or Mothers Day. The rise of the picture-sharing website Pintrest has led many couples to seek out specific items discovered through the website. Often things like specific floral arrangements can add up to be quite expensive when the same look and feel can be achieved with less expensive options, Priour said. “I just recently had a bride bring in a picture of a bouquet that had five different orchids in it,” Priour said. “Orchids are fairly expensive. So, I priced it for her three different ways.” Priour said the bouquet as originally requested was estimated at $500, but through mixing and matching with other flowers, the options ranged

High ticket items Centerpieces, photography and videography can be real money sucks, so it’s important for couples to do their homework and think outside the box with everything from invitations to music: Get creative with centerpieces, weigh need versus want on photography packages, self-design and print the invitations, supply flower containers and use a large quantity of less expensive flowers for a still-impressive display, and hire a disk jockey rather than a band. Priour said it’s easy to get sucked in by temptation — but resist. “Bridal websites will try to sell you things like $10 boxes of chocolates as favors for each of your guests,” Priour said. “Well, if you have 100 guests,

Wedding Planner

Capturing moments By Nathan Brown nathan.brown@dailytimes.com

Whether it’s finding the perfect dress for the bride, buying rings or locating venues, wedding planning can be a stressful experience. But one component of a wedding that future couples should plan far in advance is the photography and videography

to capture those perfect moments a couple will want to remember for a lifetime. One thing that local wedding photographers Mike Keith, Mia Church and Aaron Yates all agree on is that wedding photography should be booked about a year in advance of the ceremony, mainly because the photographers have such busy schedules.

Photos above and below are by Mike Keith, a photographer based in the Hill Country. “In January and December, there isn’t a lot of competition with other people, so you can generally wait a little bit longer,” Yates said. “But a lot of wedding dates every year seem to be very popular, so a lot of people are looking for the same date ... We get booked up anywhere from six months to a year in advance.” “I’ve been here in Kerrville for 28 years, and I’ve done lots of weddings,” Keith said. “I’ve found that most people who are really interested in taking pictures as an important part of the wedding book around a year in advance.” Wedding photography often doesn’t simply involve portraits of the

bride and groom. It also may include engagement photos, intimate or candid moments, family pictures, photographs of the wedding ceremony itself

and portraits of the family in the future as years go by.

four to five weeks before the wedding, as well, and decide early whether they would like just still photography or videos of the ceremony. Photographers also will need to plan to bring additional assistants, or a team of additional photographers and videographers to cover different

angles of the wedding. Some couples may prefer having a female photographer to cover the bride, and a male photographer to cover the groom. If shooting video, Yates said couples must understand that it can take about 40 hours to edit and assemble a timeline and music to create a video

or DVD of a wedding. All of this will end up costing anywhere between $2,000 and $3,000 for a wedding. “Videography is often purchased at the last minute with very little forethought,” Yates said. “But remember that photo and video are the only two investments that will last. Video is the only way to capture those moments like the toasts, the vows and other special words and songs that mean so much on the wedding day.” Aside from the normal planning involved in setting up wedding photography, some trends in local weddings have also started to emerge. Fewer couples are having their weddings in churches, instead favoring outside settings, local event venues or theme-inspired weddings. Some churches do not allow photographs to be taken during the ceremony, and sometimes it can be much cheaper to book an event venue than a church. Some venues also offer catering and a place to hold the reception, making the location all-inclusive.

“A lot of people want to try to plan the wedding themselves, but what they don’t realize is how to set up their event timeline for the dates,” Yates said. “You have to set up your timeline between the ceremony and the reception. You need to leave time

for the photographer to do their job. You need to start early to see the veil put on the bride or getting ready. If you want behind-the-scenes shots, you want to make sure that the event timeline is set up to get the shots that you need.” According to local photographers, in addition to save-the-date photographs and engagement portraits, couples should plan for bridal portaits

“It’s probably kind of cliche, but I still see cowboy weddings,” Church said. “I’ve seen a few steampunk weddings, some that are old-fashioned and Gypsy-like vintage weddings. They are often more casual, because they’re having to plan them really quickly sometimes.” As far as engagement photos go, couples often choose outdoor locations near water or a river. Some photographers favor pastoral settings, such as old barns. Keith said he has several favorite places for photos near Louise Hayes Park and along the river near Hunt. Perhaps the most important

decision a couple will face is choosing the right photographer or videography company to hire. “What people really need to do is go visit the photographer, look at their stuff and make sure they have both natural light and flash photography,” Keith said. “Everyone will put out their best stuff, but look at their wedding books and get a feel for what you want and make sure the photographer is able to do that for you.” “Make sure your chosen photographer works well with others,” Yates said. “A good photographer will have a working relationship with wedding planners, caterers, videographers, DJs, ministers and other wedding vendors. Sometimes the best references you can get are from other

photography or something more on the artistic side. “My style of photography is the art style,” Church said. “I shoot editorial style and then take some of the portraits I get and paint on them to create works of art along with the regular photos. I do a few paintings, as well.” The most important thing to remember is that a wedding photographer will likely be present for much more than just the ceremony, and each couple needs to be comfortable and engaged with the photographer they choose. Often, couples will call their wedding photographers back to take photos of their first child or future family portraits. “I try to get to know them pretty well,” Church said. “I do interviews and we get to know each other ... there are so many personalities in the family that may not have met before, so you have to find the best ways to merge these families in a cohesive manner.” “One of the biggest considerations when choosing a photographer or videographer is likability,” Yates said. “You’ll spend more time with your photographer than you will with your fiancee on your wedding day. It’s important that you get along well with them and that they’re upbeat and fun to be around.”

$15 centerpieces Herbs, wine glasses, globes incorporated into arrangements By Sean Batura sean.batura@dailytimes.com Something as simple as a floral centerpiece can add to the overall ambiance of a bridal shower or wedding — and you don’t have to spend a fortune to create a memorable look. Often used as centerpieces are hanging globes, inside which can be placed candles or a host of other ornaments, said Haydn Mobley of Corabell’s Specialty Boutique in Kerrville. The boutique’s globes range in size and price from $10 to $14. Also available as potential table decorations at Corabell’s are replicas of hollowed-out logs that can be filled with flowers or vegetation, real or artificial. The logs range from $10 to $14. Medium-sized bundles of branches also are available for $9.50 each. The boutique also keeps in stock giant acorns ranging from $3 to $5, which can be attractively clustered in a container. Karen Kordzik of the Rose Shop said bowl and flower arrangements are growing in popularity as centerpieces. Kordzik, who offers floral ar-

rangements for weddings, baby showers, birthdays and other events, offered two centerpiece options consisting of a single gerbera daisy in a bed of baby’s breath, which is suspended in water inside square or fishbowl-shaped glass containers. Some do-it-yourself options for centerpieces utilizing materials readily available at local stores include: • Trios of upturned wine glasses with roses inside them, with votive candles on the bases of the glasses. • Clear glass cylinders containing pretty rocks or crystals submerged with a single mokara orchid in water, with a floating candle. • Small terra cotta pots filled with soaked floral foam atop which are placed small beds of live sheet moss. Two or three gerberas can be placed on the moss. • Clear glass cylindrical containers covered in paper with candles inside. • Mini pots filled with pebbles and planted with herbs such as rosemary and lavender. • Flat tiled or untiled mirrors with three pillar candles placed in the centers and sprinkled with rose petals.

Planning a wedding is a big task — colors must be chosen, flowers must be purchased and a venue must be picked. Luckily, Rails Catering and CarteWheels caterers in Kerrville make the chore of setting a perfect menu for a special evening a snap. Melissa Southern, dietitian and owner of Rails, has been catering rehearsal dinners, bridal brunches, groom’s parties and weddings (among other events) for nine years and features a one-stopshop for all food needs. “We do on-site catering, and we have a bakery (The Sweeter Side of Rails), so we have everything covered from food to the wedding cake,” Southern said. “Brides are still doing cupcake weddings, and we can do some really beautifully decorated cupcakes.” Southern also said it is important to sit down with the bride and groom and talk about the menu for the event and to make adjustments for food intolerance and allergies. “We can do whatever the bride wants and adjust accordingly,” she said. “We

ULTIMATE Locals talk hair, makeup By Marivel Resendiz marivel.resendiz@dailytimes.com When Pam Allen, a hairstylist with Ritz Hair Studio II, helped transform women into brides in the 1970s, every strand of hair was carefully crafted into the perfect style. Nearly 40 years later, society moves at a faster clip, and brides are less liberal in terms of how long it takes to get the hair just right. “Before, women didn’t care how long it would take, they would spend hours having it done just right,” Allen said. Whether it’s falling curls or a vintage ’do, no bride is alike, Allen said,

and every coiffure is uniquely styled to complement the bride who sits in her chair. Allen said she has found many women who wear strapless dresses choose some sort of an up-do, to bring attention to the shoulders. “It’s a special day, and they want to look different than they do every ordinary day,” she said. When it comes to a bride, the hair is just as important as the dress and makeup. Sullivan said. “For others who are getting married for the second or third time, they’re not as young and want to go a little more natural.” However, the makeup will only look as good as the health of one’s skin, Sullivan said. Skin needs proper care in advance for the best application of makeup. “It’s not about getting in shape the night before the wedding, but starting when you know you’re getting married, making sure it’s in good shape for the look,” she said.
