BLACK INK

Ceaser Emmanuel – From The Bottom To The Top Interview By Leland Ware

ON ROOTS… When I first started, I was hustling in the streets. I first started tattooing this fiend that I was servin’ where I was going to school to be an artist. My daughter was born and I was just trying to change my life. I knew that wasn’t no type of life that a child should even be born into, nah’ mean. So I was basically just trying to change myself around. It’s funny cause this motherfucker that I’m basically destroying his life by serving him this poison was helping me build mine.

ON STARTING A BUSINESS… I always been an independent motherfucka’ and from the giddy up, I always had my own shop. I never did an apprenticeship, I never did nothin’. As soon as I thought that I was nice enough, I went and got my own shop. My first year I was tattooing at this

52

THEKAYOCORP.COM

shop in Brooklyn, I was the owner; but I was sitting in the back learning from other tattoo artists until I was good enough to say “this is my shit” and everybody else can leave.

ON ADVERSITY… My first year was my hardest year ever. Man, I couldn’t even afford Chinese food bro! It was really real, when you’re sitting there just doing shit to pay the rent - people don’t understand; you gotta sacrifice a lot and I had a lot on my plate. At one time I thought about closing up the shop and going back to the streets. I thought that was the only thing that I could do.

ON HARLEM… Everything’s a trend in Harlem, tattoos could be in one day and out the next. You have to be able to go

outside of your community and bring in customers. You also gotta be able to talk to your community, I give back to this community. I’m probably the only celebrity that can still walk through the projects with these jewels on and nobody has problems. This is the respect that you get from your hood when you give your hood the respect that it’s due.

ON DGK… I first became aware of DGK a couple of years ago. I was trying to really get into skateboarding. I was looking at a bunch of brands, I was basically trying to get into the whole grove of it. DGK was one of the brands that I discovered that I could really get behind, cause I’m a Dirty Ghetto Kid B; that’s where I come from and that’s who I am ‘til the day I die.

BRIAN LOTTI The New Natives Words By Leland Ware Photography By Matt Daughters

Brian Lotti is a living legend, he’s credited with inventing the Bigspin and has one of the best styles of all time. His history with skateboarding began in Salt Lake City, Utah when his aunt sent him his first board from San Jose. From there Brian moved to Las Vegas with his family where he enjoyed a rich skate scene and developed his skills in the abundant ditches and street spots located in Sin City. Lotti was discovered by H-Street skateboards while in high school in Vegas and would turn pro for their offshoot company Planet Earth in his senior year. Brian would eventually leave Planet Earth to ride for Blind skateboards where he was a part of Steve Rocco’s World Industries movement in the early 90’s. It was during this time that he got more into photography and painting. Brian recalls having a severe shoulder injury and starting to really get into art during his time off the board. He was also hanging around Jeff Tremaine, Sean Cliver, and Marc McKee who were running Big Brother magazine. These legendary artists encouraged Brian to pursue art and helped him build a solid foundation to cultivate his talents. During the height of his career a twist of fate would cause Brian to leave Blind and his professional career behind and take a break from skateboarding altogether. After a series of injuries, Lotti could no longer perform at what he considered his full potential and began to question his life and place in

66

THEKAYOCORP.COM

the world. He went on an introspective philosophical journey that landed him in Hawaii where he studied Zen Buddhism at a retreat center. Brian was a cook there and he spent much of his time meditating and getting his thoughts in order. In 2004, Lotti returned to skateboarding with a fresh perspective. His new focus was more of an artistic vision of skating that directly tied into his landscape paintings. Brian was interested in showing skaters in a context that any person could appreciate which involved depicting them adapting to their various environments. This theme can be seen in Brian’s films 1st And Home, Free Pegasus, and more recently Blue Line. Lotti’s latest collaboration with Organika came about through Karl Watson - who credits Brian as one of the major influences on his style. This new series consists of four boards

that show vertical landscapes winding through various scenery including the East Oakland Hills, an isolated area of Brazil, the wine country north of San Francisco, and a downtown area in New Jersey; all of which directly relate to each of the pro’s on the team. This theme of environments shaping the individual ties into a concept that Brian calls the “New Natives” which he describes as follows, “Day after day, people are out skating out in the landscape. I think a big part of what we dig in skateboarding is not just doing tricks, it’s our relationship to different places, and how we kind of move and journey about. That’s a big part of our life. So yeah, in a way I would say skateboarders - they’re like the new natives… we’re like the new Indians.”

561 SKATE SHOP Intro By Leland Ware

Farm League is Kayo’s network of core shops that fully backs everything that we do. We consider these retailers to be our partners and support them through special collaborations and hooking up their local talent on our flow roster. Together Kayo and these select shops are farming skateboarding’s future. This issue’s Farm League update highlights 561 Skate Shop in Stuart, Florida. Started by Teak Leasor in 2000, 561 was originally opened in Rio, Florida in an 800 square foot space in a ghetto strip mall. The business grew and 561 moved to its current 1,400 square foot location in downtown Stuart in May 2010. 561 boasts a shoe wall that contains over 400 different models and has released five full-length shop videos thus far. In 2012 561 product was completely banned in the Martin County school system for suspected gang affiliation, the ban was rescinded the following school year. With a presence like that, it’s obvious that 561 is doing it right in their neck of the woods!

THE KAYO FLAGSHIP Vinny From The Block Words By Leland Ware Photography By Brandon Alton

Every religion has a church and every church has a pastor. Kayo is no exception. When we made the decision to open our flagship store on the corner of Fairfax and Rosewood in Los Angeles; we knew that we had to find the right person to run it. It couldn’t be just anyone though. It had to be someone that could not only oversee the day-to-day operations; but also had the personality and charisma to connect with the consumer and had the respect of the skateboard community. When weighing in on all of these factors - Vinny Ponte was the obvious choice. Vinny is the definition of OG. His roots go back to the old New York. Vinny was a part of that Brooklyn Banks / original Zoo York era that gives him a credibility that can not be faked. He also owned and operated his own skate shop in Tribeca for many years which served as a hub for that community during its time. On top of that, Vinny’s ties to the Kayo Corp run deep - he has been a part of our family since the beginning. With Vinny at the helm, we can rest assured that The Kayo Store is in good hands and is being properly represented. The next time you’re on The Block, stop by 464 North Fairfax and say what’s up to Vinny and the crew, pick up some gear, hit up the Love Park benches, and check out the latest art installation in the upstairs gallery.

“WHEN WE OPENED THE STORE, WE HAD TO OPEN ON FAIRFAX. IF YOU’RE GONNA DO SOMETHING IN LA, FAIRFAX IS THE SPOT. WHAT WE DID OVER HERE, WE WANTED TO TAKE IT TO THE NEXT LEVEL IN SKATEBOARDING. EVERYBODY HAS THEIR BOUTIQUES AND WHAT NOT, BUT WE’RE A CORE SKATEBOARD COMPANY AND THIS IS OUR NEW CHURCH ON THE BLOCK.” – Vinny Ponte
