STILL TIPPIN’ IN TEXAS Featuring Index Skate Shop – Texas

Index is the epitome of what a skate shop should be. They have locations in both Hurst and Dallas Texas that are essential to their local scenes. All of Index’s employees rip and their shop team meets up every Sunday to cruise around the city together—which says a lot about the culture they’ve developed.

Interview By Leland Ware Photography By Matt Daughters and Brandon Alton

Dreams come true, just ask 19 year old Andreas Belton from Durham North Carolina. Andreas’ life changed when he was convinced by one of his friends to enter DGK’s Self Made contest and won despite thinking that he did not have a chance. The premise of the contest is simple, post your best fifteen seconds of footage on Instagram and tag DGK and Self Made. The fans pick their favorite videos each week and eventually narrow it down to six finalist which are voted on again to choose the ultimate winner who is flown out to California to spend a weekend skating with the DGK team. Andreas describes the experience as being the opportunity of a lifetime. You’ll have an opportunity to win a chance of a lifetime from DGK later this year when DGK launches Self Made 2. Follow the @DGK instagram for more information. #DGK #DGKSELFMADE 22

THEKAYOCORP.COM

On North Carolina… The scene in Durham is really diverse. You’ll see a whole bunch of skating, everything from street skating to bowl skating. North Carolina has a lot of historical spots, you just have to know where they are. The most famous spot in Durham is the court house with the granite benches, it was in Parental Advisory. Also the big three that I laser flipped down for the Self Made contest.

On Self Made… I didn’t even want to enter the contest because I thought I didn’t have a chance. At the time I was filming for my part in the Senseless video. I took out my last two tricks and I put them up and tagged DGK and Self Made on the post. Two or three weeks went by and I was at the state fair about to get on a ride and everybody started texting me “you won, you won!” I was like, “oh damn,

that’s sick!” They broke down all of the winners and let their followers vote. It was stressful, those whole six weeks of just waiting to see who wins. Everybody that entered killed it, it was a really good contest – I couldn’t believe I won!

On California… I always wanted to go to California, that’s every skater’s dream. The furthest I had ever been was Atlanta, and that was when I was young. So just getting the chance to go out to California and skate with the team was like a dream come true. I got off the plane and they picked me up in the Kayo van. It was crazy, I had never even seen palm trees before in real life! It was so dope, just to be in the van. I was thinking about how many famous people and good skaters had ridden in there. It was cool just observing everything and living the life of an AM or pro skater for the weekend.

Andreas Belton got a taste of that DGK lifestyle all from a 15-second opportunity. Hardflip at 2am as the DGK team watches. Photo: Brandon Alton

RYAN GALLANT What’s a Gold Goon? Someone that likes to do gangster shit on a skateboard.

How long have you been working on this part for the video? Pretty much since my last Expedition part came out, which was just about a year ago now.

Are you stoked on what you have so far? How’s it shaping up? I think the clips that I have are pretty cool, but I always want to do more for every video part that I put out; but I think it’s going to come out sick.

Who are you most excited to see in the video? Baby Stag!

“IT’S CRUNCH TIME RIGHT NOW. THERE’S ONE MORE CLIP THAT I WOULD LIKE TO GO GET UP IN LA, BUT THERE’S ALWAYS ONE MORE TRICK THAT YOU WANT TO GET FOR EVERY PART.” Shmatty Chaffin

VOL. 1 / ISSUE 4

31

CHRIS TROY How long have you been working on your part for the video? Not long enough, I thought the deadline was at the end of March; not the beginning of March – I’ve been filming for this since around October. I’m finishing filming for this other Black Label thing, so I’ve been filming for both parts simultaneously. I still have this weekend, hopefully it doesn’t rain.

Are you stoked on what you have so far? I’m really stoked on a lot of my tricks, but I’m more stoked to see everybody else’s parts and to just be a part of the video.

Who are you the most excited to see? There’s so many people, I don’t know if I can pin one down. Does Rodrigo TX have shit? I like Rodrigo, just cause he’s gnarly. I don’t know, I want to see all of the homies.

Are there any last minute tricks that you want to get for the video? I’m definitely going out this weekend and I’m gonna try to go for broke. I want come up with something good to cap off my part.

“THERE’S SO MANY PEOPLE, I DON’T KNOW IF I CAN PIN ONE DOWN… I WANT TO SEE ALL OF THE HOMIES!”

BOO JOHNSON How long have you been working on your part for Gold Goons? To be honest, it’s hard to put an exact time one it because I’m also working on a DGK part right now. I’ve been filming for both projects for the past four or five months.

Are you stoked on what you’ve got right now? I got a few clips that I’m really psyched on, since I’ve been stacking footy with Brad I’m sure whatever they use will be dope.

Who are you most excited to see in the video? I wanna see my boy Mikey Haywood’s clips. He’s a new kid that’s AM for LE; but yeah that’s my dude.

In your mind, what’s the definition of a Gold Goon? It’s like a squad you know, we’re like skaters in the streets— we’re a team of goons.

Is there anything else you want to say about this part or the Gold video in general? I’m excited to see it myself, I’m excited to see what Eli and Brad put together!

“IT’S LIKE A SQUAD YOU KNOW, WE’RE LIKE SKATERS IN THE STREETS—WE’RE A TEAM OF GOONS.”

FTC SKATE SHOP Intro By Leland Ware. Photography By Ando

FTC stands for For The City, which is the perfect name for them because they embody everything that a core skate shop should be. FTC’s roots span all the way back to 1986 and they have been fully supporting the skate community in San Francisco since then. FTC has thrown some of the most legendary contests in SF’s history – from the classic Balboa Park contest back in the early 90’s all the way up to the contests they’ve thrown recently in and behind their Haight Street location; FTC’s history of bringing skateboarders together spans generations! They also hold the city down with numerous events including art openings and board release parties at their store that are always jam packed. One thing that really makes FTC unique is their support of young skaters who have yet to make a name for themselves. From a young Stevie Williams to The FTC Young Bucks, FTC has a strong legacy of discovering and cultivating new talent – which is exactly what Farm League is all about. Together FTC and Farm League are growing the future the of skateboarding in the Bay Area and beyond.

IAN JOHNSON Paper & Pens

Words By Leland Ware. Photography By Ando

FTC’s Art Director Ian Johnson is talented to say the very least. He’s been drawing since he was five years old which he attributes to his upbringing, “I was an only child and spent a lot of time alone as a kid at my grandma’s house without much other than some paper and pens, so I didn’t really have much of a choice other than to pick up drawing.” Ian moved to San Francisco in 1993 and was immersed in the city’s skateboard culture of that era, which he credits as a major artistic influence. “The style of skateboard graphics during that time had a huge impact on me – World Industries, Mad Circle, Cream, Metropolitan, ADI, and early Girl and Chocolate were some of my favorites; but my main influence from skating was early Stereo for sure. A Visual Sound was my first video premier, I got into jazz after that and have mainly been on that kick art wise since then.” Another ongoing theme of Johnson’s work has been portraits. “I think most people that draw are into drawing faces at some point. I just kind of got hung up on it for some reason. One time I was in a figure drawing class and the teacher saw that I spent a lot of time on the face and said that I was missing the point of figure drawing. He said ‘you can’t do anything other than draw faces, you’re afraid to tackle the human form.’ That pissed me off and it made me want to draw portraits almost exclusively as a fuck you to him.” The theme of classic graphics and portraits are a central part of the inspiration behind DGK’s new collaboration with FTC. “We ended up doing an updated version of an old FTC shirt. The graphic was a bunch of the FTC team’s faces inside of the FTC logo which was inspired by the Tribe Called Quest Midnight Marauders album cover. For the DGK version we used all of the DGK guy’s faces inside of the FTC logo in the same way, except I drew them all to give it a little more continuity.”

Rodrigo TX Skate Copa Deck And Jersey Words By Leland Ware

With fans across the globe gearing up for the world championship this summer, Adidas Skateboarding teamed up with the board sponsors of select team riders that are passionate about soccer for their new Skate Copa collaboration. Being that he is a die hard fan of Canarinho – Brazil’s national team, Rodrigo TX was an obvious candidate for this project. The shirt is inspired by a retro soccer jersey from the 70’s right down to the climalite® material that it’s made from and the matching Rodrigo TX DGK X Adidas signature board gives this collaboration a truly cohesive feel. The pairing of the two companies is a match made in the city of God! The DGK X Adidas Skate Copa collaboration is available now at retailers worldwide.

TRAIL BLAZING With Josh Matthews Words By Karl Watson

“Josh Mathews is probably one of your favorite skater’s favorite skater, and he’s set up to have a lot of longevity with his skateboarding career. I fully back him because of his talent and personality—to ride for Organika, you have to have both. I first saw Josh at FTC’s For The Cash contest and was completely blown away! I couldn’t believe how easy he skated that tight little course that they had set up. He just flowed around it effortlessly! I really wanted Josh on the team, so I made the decision to call him up directly and offer him a spot. He was honored and graciously accepted, and I couldn’t be happier to have him on board.” –Karl Watson

ELI REED

Organika’s Street Artist Words By Eli Reed

“I’ve skated for Gold for awhile now and I’ve always been really tight with everyone at Kayo. Quim Cardona and Karl Watson are some of my favorite dudes, I love the way they skate. Growing up around the New York scene, I always looked up to Quim. I like the fact that Organika celebrates the art and music vibe in skateboarding. I’ve never looked at my skating in any other way than an art form. For me, skateboarding is a performance art. Organika is one of those companies that represents that side of skating. My mom’s an artist and my brother’s an artist, so I was brought up with that—a lot of people don’t really know about that side of me, I don’t show it so much. So it’s just super sick that Organika highlights that and everybody on the team is super creative. It’s a really good fit for me, I try to keep it fresh and creative and just do different stuff and not fall into any norm of what’s in. I’ve always been pretty tight with Karl—when he called and was like ‘what’s up dude, let’s do this!’ I was instantly down.” - Eli Reed

“I’VE ALWAYS BEEN PRETTY TIGHT WITH KARL—WHEN HE CALLED AND WAS LIKE ‘WHAT’S UP DUDE, LET’S DO THIS!’ I WAS INSTANTLY DOWN.”

PAPER SKATERS All City

Words By Leland Ware

If you’ve been in New York, Los Angeles, Miami, or Boston lately, you may have noticed pictures of skaters wheat pasted on walls at places that mimic skate spots. This new street art is the work of an anonymous artist known only as Paper Skaters. “I came up with the idea just from living in New York and looking at people’s graffiti and street art. I noticed that people were putting up a lot of the same characters all of the time. That got me thinking about taking photos and pasting stuff up because I’ve been into photography for years. I thought it would be sick if someone shot photos of skaters and pasted them up so it looks like they’re skating spots throughout the city,” Paper Skaters explains during a recent phone conversation. Like most things in life, location is key – “The hardest part is finding a spot that isn’t too sketchy to put something up so that you don’t get arrested, but also still looks cool. I have to find locations that look like skate spots, but are unskateable so that I can get the point across without ruining a good spot.” Paper Skaters’ future is wide open, “I’m gonna keep it on a street level for now, but I plan to keep shooting photos of the finished product and posting them on Instagram.” Follow the movement @paper_skaters

ORCHARD SKATE SHOP Intro By Leland Ware.

A good skate shop is the key to sustaining a healthy local scene. Kayo recognizes this and utilizes Farm League to highlight our network of retail partners and support them through special collaborations and by hooking up their local talent on our flow roster. Our latest Farm League update highlights Boston’s Orchard skate shop. Started in 2006 by Broderick Gumpright and Jon Devoe who later partnered with Matt Bagley and Armin Backman, Orchard was founded on the principal of opening a shop in Boston that is actively involved in the local skate scene. Orchard sets itself apart by catering to multiple generations of skaters from throughout New England who can be found hanging out at either one of their locations on any given day. They also regularly throw events that are always free and open to the public. Orchard’s flagship location contains a mini ramp and separate art gallery on the second floor, where they hold monthly art shows and host demos and signings when a visiting team is in town. The mini ramp is also open to the public to skate during business hours, which gives Boston skaters a place to go during the winters being that there are currently no indoor parks within the city. The type of dedication that Orchard shows to their local scene is unmatched in their area, which is why Kayo is proud to have them as a part of our Farm League family.

ADELMO’S MONUMENTAL JOURNEY Words By Adelmo Jr. Photography By Marco Savino

“I’ve been trying to go to Ethiopia for a while and I met this brother named Israel Diene who has a skate program called Ethio Skate over there. He was living in Europe, so he had access to product and brought some boards back to Ethiopia. Eventually he started inviting other skaters from all over to come and visit, asking if they could also donate skateboard products & apparel. I have been putting together a travel book called “Monumental”, and I knew I wanted to go to Ethiopia and visit the camp. So I gathered as much product as I could and headed over there and met up with Israel. It was really cool to see what he does, he made a couple very simple ramps and there’s almost fifty kids skating there everyday. The skate scene is very small in Ethiopia, I didn’t see any skaters in the city, only the kids at the camp. I really think that the scene is about to grow, especially because of what Israel is doing. It’s very hard to get product shipped over there, so I brought as much Organika product as I could, and I skated with them for a couple of days. It was inspiring to see the scene grow in the little time that I was there, and I will be doing what I can to help it grow in the future.” If you would like to keep track of Ethio Skate, visit ethioskate.tumblr.com
