Welcome to the Winter 2024 edition of the “Encore” magazine. We are delighted to share with you a packed program of events going into the cooler months. Once again, it’s packed with information on everything the Juniors Group of Clubs has to offer across our three venues. What better way to be entertained than at The Juniors with great food, quality entertainment and all the NRL and sports action on our live screens. We look forward to seeing you at The Juniors soon.
After 8 years at the Juniors Kingsford, Pinocchio’s restaurant will be closing its doors on Sunday June 2nd. The restaurant has been a favourite for many of our members during that time and was a great place for friends and family to meet up and enjoy a home style meal. All is not lost as Geppetto’s is still going strong at The Juniors Maroubra with Billy in the kitchen. Pinocchio’s was a family run business with two generations in the kitchen and running the floor. We wish them all the best in their future endeavours, it was a pleasure having such an iconic local restaurant at the club. We are currently working on a new restaurant to replace them and will announce this as soon as possible.

Keith McCrawAnother footy season is well and truly upon us, and it is great to see all the young local boys and girls running around for their various clubs in our Junior League. Participation rates are once again strong this year as we strive to promote and foster the game of rugby league in the South Sydney area. This is a mammoth task, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank the parents and volunteers who are vital in helping us week in and week out to make this happen. We couldn’t do it without them.
It's always an exciting time of the year coming into State of Origin and this year the blues have a new coach in Michael Maguire. “Madge” as he’s affectionately known will always be a local favourite having guided the Rabbitohs to a premiership in 2014 and we wish him all the best in delivering a series victory for the mighty blues this year.
We have included a section in the magazine which is showcasing some of the great work we are doing out in the community. As many of you will know The Juniors have been supporting the community above and beyond for many years. This edition we have focused on our support of The Shepherd Centre and the great work they are doing for the hearing impaired. The article is on pages 6 & 7.
Best Regards,

We have worked hard with our architects and builders to stage the work in several sections so that we can trade as best we can during the year. We thank all members for their patience and understanding during the months ahead. The end result is going to look fantastic, I will keep members updated as we move through each stage.

The Juniors Group of Clubs are proud to be involved in the Club Grants state-wide initiative whereby we contribute grants to front-line projects, programs and services that assist disadvantaged groups and residents in the City of Randwick. One organisation that the Juniors has proudly supported over the last few years is The Shepherd Centre.
The Shepherd Centre is a world-leading, child-safe NDIS service provider and specialist in helping children with hearing loss learn to listen and speak. In the most recent Club Grant, The Juniors provided funding for their ‘Kidscape' program. A life-changing program developing the communication and social skills of children with hearing loss in Randwick. Funding also supported initial program coordination, session planning, facilitation of and materials for the children’s group sessions.
Kidscape is a play, art, and music therapy program for children with hearing loss, supporting emotional wellbeing and self-expression. It develops listening, speaking, and social skills through fun, creative activities in a supportive group environment, with each activity designed to foster a specific life-changing skill. It consists of fun activities to develop specific communication skills and emotional
wellbeing, including Storytelling, to develop the child’s listening skills and vocabulary; Arts and Crafts, to develop a child’s ability to follow instructions, and cooperate with others; and Music Therapy (including singing and dancing), to help children listen and engage with the sounds around them, interact positively with others, and express their emotions to maximise their wellbeing. Kidscape is equally important for parents of participating children. The activities are complemented by concurrent parent group sessions, clinical support and counselling, empowering them with knowledge and strategies to develop their child’s skills and resilience at home. Further, Kidscape groups offer the opportunity for both children and parents to connect with other families experiencing similar challenges, forming a positive sense of community and overcoming the social isolation that often comes with hearing loss. Kidscape provides children the firm foundation of skills they need to thrive; setting them up for lives of success in education, community participation, careers, and relationships. The flow on effect of equipping these children and families with confidence and life skills is that the whole community benefits from their increased participation and the exposure to diversity this brings.
• Hearing loss is the most common disability diagnosed at birth
• 1 in 300 children have hearing loss by 5 years old
• 50% of these children receive no specialised support and are in danger of being left behind
• 90% of deaf children are born to parents with no history of hearing loss
Recently our EA and Marketing Special Projects Manager, Kayla Kirk along with our Marketing Coordinator Joanne Fenton, had the opportunity to visit the Early Intervention Centre to see firsthand the great work that the Shepherd Centre do. Kayla and Joanne met with Nicola Lloyd, Community Engagement Coordinator who took them on a tour of the centre and talked about the different programs and services that they offer.
Nicola explained what a positive impact the Club Grants has on their organisation. Nicola stated “the funding is flexible and agile; the simplicity of the administrative processes ensures funding is accessible to smaller charities and community organisations and enables funding to be directed to very local needs. The Club Grants system is uniquely positioned to meet local needs in an economical, direct and community-led way”. Nicola thanked The Juniors for their funding and dedication to The Shepherd Centre and the community as a whole, and appreciated all the support.
We had a memorable evening at The Juniors Kingsford last November as Prime Minister Anthony Albanese attended the Lionel Bowen Dinner alongside Member of Parliament for Kingsford Smith, Matt Thistlewaite in The Wintle Theatre.
Together they are working for a better Australia, delivering cost of living relief and investing in services that support our communities.
We appreciated the PM taking a moment to acknowledge our hardworking staff and meet Club President Keith McCraw.

James Brechney a.k.a. Breko is a resident host at Henry’s, The Juniors Kingsford for Breko’s Music Bingo every Sunday night. He is not only a hoot but comes from years of activism for the LGBTQIA+ Community.
Breko is best known for creating the "DIY Rainbow" viral campaign in 2013, encouraging people to draw rainbows on the sidewalks of Sydney as a form of support for same-sex marriage. It all started when the council removed the Sydney Rainbow Crossing from Oxford Street, Breko took to the pavement to create his very own rainbow crossing using chalk. He shared pictures online and others started to do the same thing. Chalk rainbows started popping up all over Sydney. Facebook recognised the movement and even invited him to chalk a rainbow in their Headquarters for Pride Month, flying him all the way to California. Breko’s famous rainbow jacket and chalk from his trip to Facebook HQ have recently found their rightful home at the Pride Museum, QTOPIA Sydney.
You know you’re getting old when your clothes are in a museum! “ “
Since then, his activism has continued to evolve, championing LGBTQIA+ rights in many ways including serving on the Board of the Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras for 3 years. He continues to participate in this every year, creating a float with his DIY Rainbow team. This year they won the prestigious Ron Austin Award for Most Fabulous Parade Entry at Mardi Gras 2024. It was a “White Lotus” themed float honouring the hilarious Jennifer Coolidge.
Breko runs his own entertainment business full time hosting Trivia, Corporate Events and Music Bingos across town. Breko’s Music Bingo at Herny’s is on every Sunday from 6.30pm and has been running for just over 6 months now. It continues to grow each week with a diverse audience of the young and the young at heart.
“You don’t need to be a music expert to play and win. It’s great to see some of the older crowd help out the younger patrons with the classic hits and then the tables get reversed when the Gen Z audience need to explain to everyone else who Doja Cat is! Jokes aside, we have built up a community of regulars who love playing every week.” - James Breko
To celebrate Pride Month in June there will be a themed Music Bingo Special on Sunday 16th June with all hits from Lady Gaga to Elton John. Wear something colourful to support diversity and inclusivity. Breko is passionate about entertaining audiences and bringing people together through the power of music, along with his colourful outfits and big smile! He reminds us that change begins with a spark, splash of colour – and sometimes, a song!
