s it was known throughout the world Bali is known as the thousand temple island, one of the most famous is the Taman Ayun Temple. It is located in Mengwi village. What makes this Temple special is because the whole temple area is surrounded by fish pond, that gives an illusion as if the Temple is drifting on water and the temple structure is also unique due to its multistoried roof. THE JOURNEY JUN 2015
|13
The history of Taman Ayun according to the famous scroll the Badad chronicle, the temple was build in 1634. The name Taman Ayun come from the word Hyun, which mean a temple in the park. The whole compound was build with the Balinese Hindu philosophical and conceptual basis underlining development of Balinese traditional architecture known as the Tri Mandala concept, the rules of space division and zoning. Tri Mandala is spatial 14| THE JOURNEY JUN 2015
concept describing three parts of realms, from Nista Mandala — the outer and lower mundane less-sacred realm, Madya Mandala — the intermediate middle realm, to Utama Mandala — the inner and higher most important sacred realm. In the Nista Mandala (the outer area), a unique building known as the Wantila, here a statue resembling the Tajen or cock fight one of Balinese tradition. According to tradition before a sacred ceremony were
held, a drip of blood is need and a cockfight is held until one of the chicken dripped its blood into the ground. In Madya mandala (the middle area) now had been used as an exhibition area where some beautiful traditional Balinese paintings can be found. Before entering the main and holy area (Utama Mandala) a beautiful and majestic gate greets it’s visitor. As mention earlier that what makes Taman Ayun unique is that the temple roof is constructed with multustoried roof known as Meru, its height is dedicated to Wisnu God. The temple also serve as the family temple to the member of Mengwi Palace. Aside from the main complex, the whole area is nice to be explore with its beautiful park and fish ponds. Among thousands of temple in Bali, Taman Ayun temple is surely one that has to be placed in travelers list on a visit to the island of Gods, Bali. THE Magical DancE
a
traditional Javanese dance depicting a group of horsemen. Dancers “ride” horses made from woven bamboo and decorated with colorful paints and cloth. The performance also incorporates trances. When the “trance” dancer is performing the dance in trance conditions, he can display unusual abilities, such as eating glass and resistance to the effects of whipping or hot coals. Dancers are usually men, but there are female groups too. They wear special traditional clothes. Groups vary from 2 to 8 members. Other dancer or shaman then guides them with a whip. There are no written historical records to explain the exact origin of the dance, is seems that it has been passed dawn from one generation to next. But it known to be originated from Java. There are two main hypotheses have been proposed. The first suggests that
16| THE JOURNEY JUN 2015
Kuda Lumping may have arisen out of Diponegoro’s war against the Dutch colonial forces, as a ritual reenactment of battles. The second argues that it is based on Mataramera troops riding against the Dutch. Philosophy behind this unique performance is that it reflecting the spirit of heroism and showing the cavalry power. It can be seen form it dynamic, aggressive rhythmic movements. With a flick of woven bamboo, the dancer would mimic a horse movement as if it is in a battle. Kuda lumping with all of its elements surely represents the one of many unique cultural heritage of Indonesia, one that makes a trip to Indonesia an unforgettable one. inally the cold night had passed. Beautiful shiny day to explore Tana Toraja. We drove our motorbike to some unexplored sites. First destination was Bori Parinding, a burial and ceremony site. Hundreds of megalith stone stand representing a feast of merit performed in the past by a person with high status. Entrance fee is Rp 10,000 for domestic and Rp 20,000 for international tourists. If you’re a student, you only have to pay

Rp 2,500. Two grandmothers were looking after the place. They were humble and nice, talk to them and you can get information about the place. There are some Tongkonans, burial site at the back, and also baby grave. The unique thing about baby grave is the body was buried inside tree. Popular site for baby grave is in Kambira. Pete-pete (public transportation) passes this area, so you can get here by taking petepete to Bori and ask the driver to stop you
here. Beautiful view of rice field and Mount Sesean won’t make your journey boring. Londa, a famous burial site located 5 km south from Rantepao. Big bold wall as the burial site designed with chambers for the highest status on the wall. While normal people coffins are put inside the cave. Skulls and bones are everywhere. after me. Entrance fee again Rp 10,000 for domestic Rp 20,000 for international visitors. Make sure you bring your lights or get the guide with lamp to show you the way. Last destination we visit was Lemo. Same with Londa it’s cliff burial site, I like this place. It’s unique and different. Somehow, I can’t understand how cultures can be so distinct between one and another. Even it’s still the same country, Indonesia has many different amazing cultures. A funeral tradition awaited by most visitors in Toraja are Rambu Solo. Torajans gave high last appreciation to the deceased. The cost of the funeral are so expensive, that’s why after the death, the body will be kept for months even years until the money is collected and all the family members can attend the funeral. Highest peak when Rambu Solo’ is held is between July-August. You can find Rambu Solo in normal days, it’s quiet often held in Toraja. Ask the people around to get information about Rambu Solo. In a glance, Bolu Market seems like a normal market. Normal in weekdays but different in Sunday where you can find the activity of trading buffalo. Buffalo has high value in Tana Toraja. People believe that buffalo will escort the spirit of the deceased to Puya (the world of spirit). The more the buffalo, the faster the spirit reach Puya. Buffalo is slaughtered during Rambu Solo ceremony by a single swing using Golok 20| THE JOURNEY JUN 2015
(traditional Razor) the price of the buffalo depends on the age, and the type. Buffalo with stripe cost higher than black/brown buffalo. The small black buffalo cost around $500, big one cost $1500, the famous one with stripe (Tedong Bonga) cost around $2000-5000 and the rare one, albino buffalo cost the same as a car. Sambal
S
ambal, which the dictionary describes as a hot relish in Southeast-Asian cuisine made of vegetables or fruit and spices, is not merely a condiment that goes with food for Indonesians. Sambal is sauce typically made from a variety of chili peppers and secondary ingredients such as shrimp paste, fish sauce, garlic, ginger, shallot, scallion, sugar, lime juice, and rice vinegar or other vinegars. It has become an essential element in enjoying the complete experience of the nation’s cuisine, which is based on rice supplemented by sauces — the spicier the better Various recipes of sambals usually are served as hot and spicy condiments for dishes such as ikan bakar (grilled fish), ikan goreng (fried fish), ayam goreng (fried

chicken), and soto. Sambal is an Indonesian loan-word of Javanese origin (sambel) The all-time favorite Indonesian dish, nasi goreng (fried rice), for example, is always garnished with pickled cayenne peppers, shallots and cucumbers and, if you order from a nearby street vendor, you can request how hot you want your dish to be and the cook will add freshly ground chili accordingly. In the Indonesian archipelago, there are as many as 300 varieties of sambal. The intensity ranges from mild to very hot. As Indonesia was once known to the Dutch colonial as spice islands and chili is one of it, it also produce one of the wonders in Indonesian cuisine, one that needs to be tasted to experience the full Indonesian delicacy.

To reach and enjoy the waterfall, we have to walk down a graded trail and steps from Senaru Village. It is about 100 meters in height and divided into three layers. First layer known as Sendang Gile, the send is Tiu Kelep and the top is Batara Lajang. In addition, there is a uniqueness that distinguishes this waterfall with others.
