Continued from page 1 “The underground city is fitted with blast doors and living quarters that make it possible for operatives to remain there for long periods,” he noted. After the Khan Yunis military operation, the IDF is expected to set up a security zone as a buffer between Gaza and Israeli communities. Further air strikes would dismantle Hamas infrastructure. The United Nations Security Council, meantime, postponed a meeting for a third time to discuss ‘urgent humanitarian pauses’ in Gaza. A draft United Arab Emirates resolution has called for the return of hostages and two-state solution between Israel and the Palestinians. While Israel’s military operation continues, talks took place for a week-long ‘ceasefire’ dependent on the release of 40 hostages. Israel have prioritised the release of women then elderly and ill men. They may release Palestinian prisoners convicted of severe attacks on humanitarian grounds. Reports however emerged this morning that negotiations had stalled. Around 130 Israeli and foreign citizens remain in captivity by Hamas. Eighty hostages were released in the last ‘truce’ deal. President Isaac Herzog indicated Israel would consider a ‘humanitarian pause’ while Mossad chief David Barnea discussed a possible deal with CIA Director Bill Burns and Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdel-Rahman Al-Thani in Warsaw, Poland. Israel’s leaders have stated that Hamas must disarm and surrender leaders behind the October terror attack for the war

Initial investigations indicate the IDF battalion was not informed by the unit it was replacing about a Hebrew sign on a building that read ‘Help: three hostages’. Also, an IDF sharpshooter did not see Shamriz and Talalka with a white ‘surrender’ cloth. The sniper was authorised to open fire on suspicious figures. Haim retreated to a building but was mistakenly shot by a sniper. This morning a heartrending message by Haim’s mother, Iris to the soldiers of the Bislamach Brigade’s 17th Battalion, was released, offering her ‘love and a hug’ to soldiers. “Everything that happened is absolutely not your fault, nobody’s fault except that of Hamas, may their name be wiped out and their memory erased from the earth,” she wrote. “Don’t hesitate for a second if you see a terrorist. Don’t think that you killed a hostage deliberately. You have to look after yourselves because only that way can you look after us.” She added: “At the first opportunity you are invited to come to us. We want to see you with our own eyes and hug you and tell you that what you did, however hard it is to say this, and sad, it was apparently the right thing at that moment.”

Iris concluded by saying that her family would not judge them or be angry over the tragedy. IDF Spokesman Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari said “lessons” had been learned and passed to troops. Netanyahu said: “This is an unbearable tragedy and all of Israel is grieving. At this difficult time, it is important for me to stand by our soldiers. They are giving their lives to achieve a crushing victory over our enemies. Everyone who has fought on the battlefield knows that the distance between victory and disaster is a hairs breadth. We will not relent in the military and diplomatic effort to safely return home all of our hostages.” Netanyahu said without military pressure the release of 110 hostages last month would not have occurred. Gallant spoke with the three families over Shabbat and said he took responsibility for “achievements and grave mistakes” during the war. “Throughout my military service, I have lost commanders, fellow troops and soldiers under my command. This event is one of the most tragic and difficult events I can remember, because we were so close to succeeding. The price of war is a heavy one, we pay it every day, but when you are fighting for a worthy cause, you have to pay a price. And we are willing to keep going until we achieve our goals.” Earlier this week it was also announced that Captain (Res.) Netanel Silberg, son of Dov and Ayala Silberg from Alon Shvut, was killed fighting in northern Gaza. A commander in the Yahalom special operations forces of the Combat Engineering Corps, Silberg, 33, was a grandson of the late Rabbi Sidney Silberg, who served Hendon United Synagogue from 1980-96.

to end. An IDF statement confirmed most tunnel shafts and underground passages were ‘subterranean structures’ beneath schools, hospitals, mosques, UN facilities and civilian institutions. Gallant on a tour of the Gaza border explained: “Khan Yunis (in southern Gaza) has become the new capital of terrorism. The operation will cross stages and continue until we achieve our objectives.” Gallant added that ground operations would be expanded to include central Gaza and Rafah, although this would be particularly challenging as it is close to the Egyptian border. The IDF has also attacked Hezbollah ‘terrorist infrastructures targets’ in Lebanon as tensions grow. Israel continues to lose troops and the complexity of its military operation was highlighted with the deaths of three hostages, Yotam Haim, Samar Talalka and Alon Lulu Shamriz, mistakenly killed by an IDF sniper in Gaza City’s Shejaiya neighbourhood last Friday.

Ambassadors briefed on humanitarian aid BY DAVID SAFFER

President Isaac Herzog briefed over 80 Ambassadors from around the world on the hostage crisis and delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza. Herzog noted Israel was prepared for another ‘humanitarian pause’ in return for the release of hostages held in captivity. He stressed responsibility is on leaders of Hamas. Herzog added that Israel was not at war with the Palestinian people but fighting the terrorist organisation. He called on international organisations to do more to facilitate aid to Gaza. Herzog said: “Any effort that your states, leaders, media and diplomatic input can help in pressing on various countries who are involved in this saga is vital. We must remember that there are dozens of humanitarian cases within the group of hostages such as babies, the elderly, sick, wounded, and, of course, many women.” He added: “We are not fighting the people of Gaza. They are not our enemies. We are fighting Hamas, they are the enemy. We are taking all possible humanitarian steps according to international humanitarian law.” Herzog continued: “We are doing enormous efforts to increase humanitarian aid to Gaza. We are dealing with major humanitarian efforts, with foreign hospitals being built. I want to commend the Emirati initiative, others

are following suit.” Herzog explained that Humanitarian aid could be tripled. He said: “For the last two weeks, Israel has operated new scanning equipment in Nitsana enabling the entry of 350 trucks a day. There was a failure by the United Nations predominantly, and other partners in the inflow of trucks into Gaza, only about 125 or 100 trucks a day. The world has to know that you could have had tens of thousands of tons a day more going into Gaza.” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met with representatives of families of the hostages this week. In the latest meeting with hostage families, Netanyahu said he is committed

to bringing about the release of all of the hostages. “Rescuing them is the highest mission,” he noted. Hostages Coordinator Brig.-Gen. (Res.) Gal Hirsch, National Security Council Director Tzachi Hanegbi and Netanyahu’s Military Secretary, Maj.-Gen. Avi Gil, attended the meeting. Herzog marked the final night of Chanukah with families of hostages at Hostage Square in Tel Aviv. On a poignant night of celebration Herzog met family members before kindling the eighth candle of the menorah. And his thoughts were about the hostages held by Hamas terrorists in Gaza since the October 7 terror attack. Addressing the gathering, Herzog spoke about the festival. “Chanukah is a holiday of heroism and I want to talk about the heroism of the hostages, of their supreme bravery,” he said. “I wish to offer them strength, we send them love, encouragement, reinforcement and support, and tell them, you will return home safely. “Chanukah is a holiday of mutual responsibility. All of Israel are responsible for one other. Our soldiers are acting PHOTO: GPO with bold determination,

heroically, risking and sacrificing their lives to defeat the enemy and to bring the hostages home. Chanukah is also a time of unity. I can tell you that there is great unity of purpose, there is a great shared ambition to return the hostages. There is a huge Israeli effort to return the hostages home. This is the deep commitment of the State of Israel and people of Israel, to see them home as soon as possible.” Herzog added: “We are facing a bitter, cruel, sophisticated, cynical enemy. So, part of the campaign is knowing how to face them, knowing that at the end of the day, both military and other actions will bring them home.” He concluded: “Most of all, Chanukah is a holiday of miracles. We will light the Chanukah candles. As we say, ‘a great miracle happened here’. And with G-d’s help and brave actions, we will see a great miracle and the hostages will return home.” The day after Chanukah, Mossad’s head David Barnea met the Qatari Prime Minister for the potential or another hostage deal. Israel is insisting on all female captives who were set to be released in the initial agreement followed by wounded captives and elderly men. It has been reported Israel will be ‘more generous’ in releasing Palestinian security prisoners.

IDF discover huge Hamas tunnel BY DAVID SAFFER

The IDF has discovered a Hamas tunnel network ending 400 metres from the Erez crossing of the Gaza Strip. According to the IDF a “massive tunnel system” splits into branches over four kilometres and 50 metres underground. The tunnel is a “strategic attack tunnel network” said a spokesman “large enough to drive vehicles through” led by Muhammad Sinwar, brother of Hamas leader, Yahya Sinwar. Footage shows Sinwar, head of logistics and construction of the tunnel, driving a car inside the tunnel. The IDF has reportedly shared a video filmed by Hamas during construction of the tunnel. It was “intentionally” dug near a crossing dedicated to moving Gazans into Israel for “work and medical care”, the IDF added. The IDF earlier this month said it had discovered over 800 tunnels, 500 had been destroyed. A US Modern War Institute study published two months ago indicated 1,300 tunnels over 500km (310 miles). The latest tunnel highlighted is wider and more sophisticated than most. The IDF noted it was “equipped with electricity, ventilation, sewage, communication networks and rails”. Many tunnels are built under hospitals,

We are trying to get to that second layer that Hamas has built. These aren’t bunkers for Gazan civilians. It’s only for Hamas and other terrorists so that they can continue to fire rockets at Israel, to plan operations, to launch terrorists into Israel.” Bicom noted in recent days that the IDF had also discovered the Beit Hanoun battalion’s main tunnel deep within civilian infrastructure. It included the city hall, a mosque, football pitch and daycare centre. Reports last week said the army may flood tunnels with seawater from the Mediterranean. Successful tests had reportedly taken place. Tunnel construction started in Gaza before Israel withdrew troops and settlers in 2005. The IDF has subsequently monitored the movement of goods, medical assistance and Palestinian workers for security reasons.

Hostages ‘top priority’ says Spoljaric

ICRC President Spoljaric and PM Netanyahu

ICRC head. “After they shot hundreds, murdered over 1,200 people, they took these people as hostages. Where’s that heard of” Netanyahu added: “From our point of view the only difference is not the intent, but the capability. If they had the capability, they would have killed every last one of us. They didn’t, because we fought back, sometimes with incredible odds. The difference between deliberate and systematic murder, maiming and menacing of civilians, is terrorism, and unintended casualties that accompany any warfare.” Netanyahu thanked Spoljaric for her help in securing the release of hostages during a brief truce last month but criticised ICRC statements on IDF’s actions to dismantle Hamas and rescue innocent captives. “My goal in our conversations is to see how we can help the remaining hostages, you have every avenue to place public pressure on Hamas,” he said. 4% of British Jews back the BBC

BY ADAM MOSES

Campaign Against Antisemitism have revealed “astonishing” figures in a poll about the BBC’s coverage of the Israel-Hamas war. The result was conclusive according to CAA polling with 86% of British Jews not satisfied. Only 4% of British Jews were satisfied with the broadcaster. Six percent did not watch or listen to the BBC or read its website. A CAA spokesperson said: “These are astonishing figures, and must surely give the BBC pause. The Corporation’s failure to call Hamas ‘terrorists’, its prejudiced misreporting of the hospital blast and Jeremy Bowen’s errors and shameless remorselessness are just a selection of the controversies in which the BBC has been embroiled over the past two months.” CAA added: “These scandals have served only to confirm the Jewish community’s perception of the BBC as a biased broadcaster that fails to live up to its duty of impartiality when it comes to reporting on the Jewish state. As we have shown in the last few weeks, this bias fuels antisemitism in the UK and has real-world effects. Clearly, urgent steps must be taken to turn the situation around. “British Jews are forced to pay a licence fee to fund coverage with which they are

not satisfied. It is time for accountability. The BBC must finally listen and deliver to its Jewish and non-Jewish viewers, listeners and readers the sort of coverage that they can rely on.” Those polled answered the question ‘Overall, I am satisfied with the BBC’s coverage of the Israel-Hamas crisis.’ Fieldwork was conducted November 12-17 2023. There were 3,744 responses obtained. Since the October 7 terror attack Jewish organisations have lobbied the BBC over its coverage of the Gaza conflict. The Board blasted the BBC following an IDF operation at the Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza last month. IDF troops entered the city’s largest hospital in a ‘precise and targeted operation’ against Hamas. Forces encountered explosives and eliminated a number of Hamas terrorists. Tunnel networks were discovered under and around the hospital. The IDF has supplied incubators, baby food and medical supplies to the hospital as part of its humanitarian efforts. The US backed IDF claims Hamas was storing weapons in medical facilities at the complex. The BBC claimed IDF soldiers were targeting Arabic speaking doctors at the hospital. Moshe brings Chanukah to Police BY DAVID SAFFER

North West Police forces celebrated Chanukah for the eighth successive year thanks to the efforts of Greater Manchester Police Special Constabulary Inspector Moshe Rothstein. Rothstein has many years experience bringing ‘Festival of Lights’ to the region. His trailblazing idea started when he organised a menorah lighting event at GMP HQ almost a decade ago. Moshe put the event on social media and it quickly became popular amongst neighbouring police forces. Greater Manchester Fire and rescue service also run events. The Special Inspector has carried out

Chanukah events not only at GMP but also North Yorkshire, British Transport, Cheshire and Merseyside Police. Each event has great meaning not just for police officers attending but also to local communities within each force area. With the current political climate and a surge in antisemitism, the Special Inspector felt a need to ‘add more light’ so organised a lighting for the first time at Lancashire police Blackpool HQ. The event attracted Jewish and non-Jewish police officers, people of faith and non-faith to spread more light. Rothstein opened events this year with an inspirational message. He noted: “In what seems to be such a dark time for the Jewish people, with the

rise of antisemitism and hate towards the Jewish nation, we come together and light the menorah candles which has, over so many generations, kept the hope and spirit up. “We as emergency services are the light, the blue light, which people turn to at their darkest of days. Let us be the light that helps others see in their times of darkness.” Chankah celebrations at Bury Police

Rothstein has won a UK government award for special constables and police support volunteers. The sole orthodox Jew in the GMPdivision, Rothstein scooped the Lord Ferrers Award at the House of Commons back in 2015 for his work in building relations between the police and Jewish community.

AJEX Plaque honours 43 Group BY ADAM MOSES

A historical plaque in East London pays tribute to the courageous efforts of the 43 Group confronting the resurgence of fascism in post-World War II Britain. The plaque on the corner of Ridley Road and Kingsland Road at Dalston Junction, Hackney was organised by AJEX archivist Martin Sugarman. The initiative is funded by the Jewish American Society for Historic Preservation U.K Branch. In 1946, amidst growing concerns over the re-emergence of fascist ideology, 43 Jewish veterans and non-Jewish allies gathered. Organising themselves out of a building on Panton Street, the group emerged as a formidable force, expanding in numbers as they rallied to confront Sir Oswald Mosley and his Union Movement. Mosley, a notorious figure associated with far-right politics, was known for confrontational and violent tactics. The group, dedicated to upholding principles of justice and equality, actively disrupted Mosley’s meetings and rallies, particularly in the Dalston-Ridley Road area, a historically Jewish community. Physical confrontations culminated in the defeat of Mosley and his followers

by 1950, marking a significant victory against fascism and anti-Semitism in Britain. Sugarman was a teenager at the Ridley Road fight in 1962. He recounted: “We were throwing pennies at the Fascists as they tried to speak

go to Ridley Road, but we did anyway and bunked off school. As Mosley arrived, we all rushed him and his platform and he was taken away by his Blackshirt guards to his limousine and never again returned. Soon after he left the UK.” The plaque is a lasting testament to the

once known as ‘Yiddley Road’ by fascists due to its dense Jewish population before World War II. National AJEX Chair Dan Fox said: “The plaque honours the courage of those who, against the backdrop of post-war uncertainty, confronted the menace of fascism on Ridley Road. The 43 Group’s unwavering commitment to justice and unity stands as a beacon of inspiration. May this plaque remind us of our shared responsibility to safeguard the values that triumphed on these streets.” Jerry Klinger, Jewish American Society, noted: “Over the decades the area had been heavily Jewish. At Ridley Road, the Jews won, Great Britain won, new immigrants won. Time decays memory. Complacency replaces vigilance.” The commemorative plaque is a reminder that, through collective resistance, communities can overcome the shadows of the past. Over the past 25 years, through research Sugarman has made it his mission to ensure Jewish war grave errors are discovered, reported and corrected. To date he has been involved with 350 graves, listed casualties as Jews on memorials, which have no religion specified, and organised over 20 memorial plaques in iconic locations.

No state of solution OPINION PIECE BY ROBERT FESTENSTEIN

This last week has seen a considerable amount of discussion on the Two State Solution - TSS. I have been saying for some time that this is not viable, though it was only when I looked back at my earlier articles did I realise for how long this has been the case. In January 2016 I wrote an article entitled ‘The Two State Solution and False Messiahs’. It was directed at fringe Jewish groups who believed that TSS was the answer. Having read that article and thinking about what is happening now, it is abundantly clear that almost 8 years I was spot on with my analysis and sadly remain so. Her excellency Mrs Tzipi Hotovely, the Israeli ambassador to the UK made her position perfectly clear when interviewed on Sky News. When asked about the prospects of a TSS her answer was an unequivocal no. Back in January 2016 I said this: “There is no progress because our opponents don’t want it. This is disappointing but current events make it difficult to see it any other way. It is clear to me that Hamas and Fatah

don’t see a two state solution as a long-term reality. At best, for them, it is just a shortterm road to their ultimate aim – a one state solution without Jews. The difficulty though is that they cannot even bear to see the first stage of what is their two stage solution – acceptance of a Jewish state at stage one even if they are determined to destroy it in stage two. This view though is contrary to popular thinking and I can understand why. If we accept that at present there is no solution then we have to also accept that the hatred and the killings will continue indefinitely. Golda Meir famously said “we will only have

21 DECEMBER 2023

peace with the Arabs when they love their children more than they hate us”. That was in 1972 – almost 44 years ago. Yet barely 18 months ago during Operation Protective Edge [in 2014], Hamas demonstrated clearly that they were no further forward – their hatred of the Jews surpassed their love of their children. Which takes me back to today [January 2016]. Hamas shows no sign whatsoever of letting up in their hatred of the Jews and the Jewish State. In parallel, the leader of the Palestinian Authority shows no sign whatsoever of letting up in his support of the recent spate of stabbings and shootings of Jews in

and around Israel. To put it another way: how do we explain to the outside world that this is what Hamas wants to do and the Palestinian Authority is supporting without appearing to be trying to walk away from a desire to create a lasting peace. Golda’s words might be middle aged but they are as relevant and vital today as ever. We should be working to make them work.” Back to the present day two things are apparent. Firstly the reality of what I wrote about almost 8 years ago is with us now, only very very much worse. Secondly, despite the horrors of the 7th October there remains the obsession with TSS. That needs to go and until it does amongst the Jewish communal leaders and the wider world, I regret to say I will probably be writing another piece like this in another 8 years. Onwards and upwards Morocco! Robert Festenstein is a practising solicitor and has been the principal of his Salford based firm for over 20 years. He has fought BDS motions to the Court of Appeal and is President of the Zionist Central Council in Manchester which serves to protect and defend the democratic State of Israel.

NJA Raises Concerns The National Jewish Assembly (NJA) expresses concerns over the recent decision by the UK government, as announced by British Foreign Secretary Lord David Cameron, to impose sanctions on individuals responsible for “settler” violence against Palestinians in Judea and Samaria (aka the West Bank). The power to sanction individuals is a measure of utmost gravity. Historically, the UK government has used sanctions to target individuals and organisations that pose threats to national security. The acts of aggression and violence committed by the tiny minority of individual so-called “settlers” are entirely against Israeli law, and those perpetrating such crimes are held accountable. It is noteworthy that there isn’t a similar designation specifically for individuals from other disputed territories who have committed violent crimes. This exceptional treatment of residents of Judea and Samaria raises questions about the consistency and fairness of such decisions. While it is important to address violence wherever it occurs, the magnitude of “settler”-related incidents, and their

threat to UK national security, pales in comparison to the ongoing threats posed by terrorist organisations like Hamas and their sympathisers within the UK. We urge the UK’s Foreign Office to prioritise its efforts in monitoring and sanctioning those individuals and entities linked to terrorist activities who pose a very clear and present danger. In that respect, we call upon the Foreign Office to revoke the visas of Osama Gaweesh and Mohammed Naseraly, and to crack down on those delivering hate-fuelled sermons in mosques, all of whom pose a far greater risk to our national security than a tiny minority of fringe Israelis who are ultimately held to GIFT volunteers spreading the light this Chanukah account under their own legal system. The NJA believes that addressing the root causes of violence - Islamic terrorism and incitement - should take precedence over singling out a tiny fringe group within a complex and multifaceted conflict. The UK government must allocate its resources and efforts in a manner that addresses the broader challenges and threats to peace The first night of Chanukah was marked and security here and in the Middle East. on Pinner high street with a community menorah lighting, a collaboration be-

Rabbi Shaya Green, of Northwood United Synagogue, said: “Seeing so many people from the community come together was so special. Everyone was

energised by the unity expressed on this evening.” Before the lighting of the menorah, Councillor Marilyn Ashton and Rabbi Kurzer, of Pinner United Synagogue, addressed the crowd, speaking about the importance of Chanukah to the Jewish people and how proud Pinner was to host such an event. Chanukah is one of the most celebrated festivals on the Jewish Calendar and is traditionally celebrated by the lighting of a menorah candelabra, eating foods fried in oil and events with family and friends. The event was organised by Northwood, Pinner and Ruislip United Synagogues with the very kind assistance of Harrow Council, the Met police force and CST.

Havering Menorah Lighting Following some uncertainty whether the Havering Menorah would gain permission to be installed for Chanukah this year, permission was granted just three days prior to the onset of Chanukah. On Wednesday evening with a crowd of some 300 attending, Chabad Lubavitch North East London & Essex in conjunction with Romford & District Synagogue celebrated a Menorah lighting ceremony in front of Havering Town Hall, with cheers and great excitement. Rabbi Aryeh Sufrin MBE, Executive Director, accompanied by Rabbi Lee Sunderland of Romford & District Synagogue and Chazan Eli Sufrin of Finchley Synagogue, led the ceremony. Numerous dignitaries including: The Mayor of Havering, Cllr Stephanie Nunn; Leader of the Council, Cllr Ray Morgon; Andrew Rosindell MP; Mr Mike Brace CBE DL from the Greater London Lieutenancy, Councillors & representatives of the Council, gathered for the Ceremony outside the Town Hall. This event was followed by a Chanukah party at Romford & District Synagogue, in close proximity to the new Menorah. Rabbi Sufrin MBE said “Chabad Lubavitch across Essex, is delighted that Havering Council allowed this, our 10th public Menorah

location and lighting across Essex to go ahead. Our first Menorah has proudly stood every Chanukah for 38 years on the Gants Hill roundabout, Ilford. Since 1985, as the activities of Chabad NE London & Essex have grown to four Chabad Centres in Essex with a team of Chabad emissaries, so also has the Chanukah public Menorah campaign grown. Greetings shared at this evening’s outdoor event, by the Havering dignitaries, all expressed their pleasure in seeing such a large, delighted crowd gathered at the Menorah Lighting Ceremony. This is, in itself, testimony to the deeper message of Chanukah, of increasing light over darkness, goodness and kindness over evil. We are absolutely delighted, as are all the leadership and residents of Havering”.

Since the 7th October terrorist atrocities, the Jewish community has endured an unprecedented surge in antisemitic hate crime. Across the UK, Jewish people have had to contend with widespread calls for the genocide of Jews, violence against individuals, threats, intimidation and desecration of property. This has led to our community declaring that we are strong, united, determined and we will not hide away or be silent. At 14.00 on the 21st January, the Jewish community will be marching through central Manchester as proud British Jews. In addition, we call upon our friends from wider society, to join together in a powerful showing of solidarity and support. There is a simple and clear message that we will not tolerate hatred directed towards our community. More details on the route of the march and those who will be speaking at its conclusion - will be released in due course. The JRC will be working in close consultation with a range of communal partners in addition to the Community Security Trust, Greater Manchester Police

and Manchester City Council. Mark Adlestone OBE DL - Chair of the Jewish Representative council of Greater Manchester and region, “At this moment in time, Jewish communities are understandably feeling uneasy and concerned. We are coming to terms with a huge surge in hate crime targeting Jewish people and property around the world. I am fortunate to be leading a community which remains vibrant and resolute. That is why we are scheduling a march through Manchester City Centre to demonstrate that we are unafraid and will continue living our lives as proud British Jews. We encourage all Jewish people from across the country to demonstrate their pride by joining us at this important juncture. In addition, now more than ever we require the support of our friends from outside the Jewish community. The message is simple in that we seek to condemn antisemitism in all its forms and call upon all our friends to show solidarity with Jewish people at this difficult time”.

A shidduch made in heaven Richmond Shul was delighted to host the Chief Rabbi and Lady Mirvis and United Synagogue President Michael Goldstein and his wife Lara for the induction of Rabbi Chaim Golker. 135 people - the maximum that could be seated attended the Friday night dinner and a packed Shul on Shabbat morning included the Mayor, Deputy Lieutenant, Leader of the Council, MP Sarah Olney and key Councillors plus inter faith leaders. The Chief Rabbi spoke of the Golkers’ achievements in their 16 months at Richmond, which included a growing membership, doubling of the size of the Cheder, including an Israeli stream, regular youth club meetings, the sizeable young adults group and the growing involvement of local Israelis. He said that as Rabbi Golker was previously head of the Cheder, he was known and it was clear from talking to members across the community that he and his wife Gila were a perfect fit for Richmond – “a shidduch made in Heaven. They are much loved and their dedication is obvious and it is hugely appreciated. Richmond is

going from strength to strength.” Paul Lawrence, Chair of Richmond, said “we were thrilled to host the Chief Rabbi and President of the US over Shabbat. The Golkers are a highly intelligent, approachable and non-judgemental couple who have great energy and are already driving us forward. They are a wonderful fit and are inspiring us to greater things.” Rabbi Chaim Golker said “It is a source of great pride to me that our community is growing and fulfilling the Jewish dreams of so many, who see the community as their Jewish home. We are truly becoming a bastion of Jewish life in South West London.”

On the above hand from the 1998 Generali Individual an expert player made a routine play without considering the requirements of the specific position. Fortunately for him, the defence were unable to take advantage of the oversight. Westra led the king of diamonds against 4♥, which went to the 6, 3, and 7 (a routine false card from Zia). Westra rather unimaginatively continued with a second diamond, and Zia won and crossed to hand twice in clubs, to take two finesses in hearts, making the routine ten tricks for an above average score -1 Heart, 4 Hearts,1 Diamond and 3 clubs.

Unremarkable, you may say. Yes, but Zia had given the defence a chance to go wrong when he ducked the first diamond, a play which in practice could hardly gain. Similarly, Westra could have worked out that if declarer has two diamonds, continuing the suit achieves nothing, while even if he has three diamonds, there are no entries back to the West hand to reach the defence’s second trick in that suit. If Westra had shifted to a spade at trick two, the defence can safely lead that suit at every opportunity, and can eventually arrange a trump promotion for the queen of hearts, whatever Zia does.

ASK THE RABBI Looking for answers? Send your question to Rabbi@RabbiSchochet.com GET OVER IT - OR USED TO IT Dear Rabbi I have read your column these past weeks, picked up in Golders Green. I find your remarks about the current war in Israel completely imbalanced, very one-sided, insensitive to the plight of the Palestinian people and sometimes imperialistic. Don’t ignore the fact that Israel kicked Arabs out of their homes seventy-five years ago when they took over the land. Now it’s time to give it all back. There’s no other conversation to be had. Beginning. End. Period! Idris Dear Idris I’ve addressed this several times since October 7th but let me try to appeal to your sensibilities from a different angle. When you travel around certain parts at this seasonal moment, you’ll encounter nativity scenes. They’re under trees and everywhere else besides. Do you know where they originate from? Bethlehem. Do you know where that is? In the “West Bank” which is presently governed by the Palestinian authority. It wasn’t always. In 1950 it was 86 percent Christian. Now it is overwhelmingly Muslim. To several billion Christians in the world there can be no more a sacred site than Bethlehem. That’s why they have those nativity scenes and settings. But it is no longer under their jurisdiction. We don’t see Crusaders emerging with intent to take it back. Countries, boundaries and empires change. Palestine was under the Ottoman Empire for four hundred years. But today, an ottoman is something you use to rest your legs. The city of Byzantium became the city of Constantinople which then became Istanbul. The Irish had the entire island to themselves and then soon surrendered much of that to the British Empire. They bombed each other for decades till Kingdom come. In all these scenarios and more, they may not have been happy with the situation but eventually everybody comes to terms with it. Except the Palestinians. Even if you argue that it was unjust that Arab families were forced to move upon the founding of the Jewish state in 1948, but (a) there was an initial agreement by the UN where that didn’t need to happen. Only the Arabs rejected it and waged war instead. The end result was that they lost and

hence (b) they found themselves in a circumstance as that of all the aforementioned and others besides, where things change and people learn to make the best of it. After World War Two, twelve million ethnic Germans got shoved out of Russia, Poland and Czechoslovakia. A million Greeks were kicked out of Turkey in 1923; almost a million French were kicked out of Algeria in 1962; nearly a million Syrian refugees moved to Germany eight years ago. And no one knows more about being pushed off land than Jewish people – especially Arab lands. 140,000 Jews lived in Algeria in 1948; 135,000 in Iraq; 75,000 in Egypt; 265,000 in Morocco; 105,000 in Tunisia; 38,000 in Libya. How many Jews are left in any of these countries from which they were ethnically cleansed? 2000 in Morocco; less than 10 in Iraq and 0 in Libya. History is brutal but in all these circumstances we coped and we moved on. People get moved and sometimes colonized. Nobody was a bigger colonizer than the Muslims that swept out of the Arabian Desert and took over much of the world in a single century. Kosovo was the cradle of Christian Serbia – then it became Muslim. They fought a terrible war over it but eventually stopped. They didn’t keep it going for 75 years. To reiterate a point I made previously: Notwithstanding our victory over the Arab nations that sought to obliterate us, there were deals on the table in 1947, 1993, 1995, 1998, 2000, 2008. Arafat was offered 95% of the West Bank and said, “No.” The Palestinian people by now ought to know that their leaders, not to mention the useful idiots on college campuses who profess to be their allies, are not doing them any favours by keeping alive the mantra, “from the river to the sea.” Where exactly do they think Israel is going? Inasmuch as Palestinians make claims to the land dating back 75 years, Israel is indisputably the ancestral Jewish homeland. Even if, as I said, things change the Palestinians attacked. And lost. And attacked again. And lost again. And attacked once more. And lost once more. If they haven’t worked it out until now, here’s a newsflash: You can chant all you want “from the

river to the sea” but Israel is going nowhere! It’s one of the strongest countries in the world with a 500 billion dollar economy, the world’s second largest tech sector, and nuclear weapons. They’re here to stay so get over it or at the very least get used to it. None of this is intended to undermine the plight of the Palestinian people. But the only way this ends is (a) a return of the hostages, (b) a realization that Israel is here to stay and (c) an obliteration of the enemy that is Hamas, who remain committed to Israel’s annihilation. There’s no negotiation nor peace to be had until these three things happen – beginning,

end, period!

Silent Heroes, Sacred Callings BY RABBI MOSHE TARAGIN

Heroes everywhere. During our nation’s war against evil, heroes have emerged from every sector of our people. Soldiers, reservists, first responders of Oct 7., wives of soldiers, volunteers from across the world, and simple people of faith. Among all these brave warriors one quiet group of heroes stands out. Those who attended the slain victims of this massacre endangered their lives as well as their mental well-being in providing honor to those from whom it was so violently taken. As the horrific images so brutally demonstrated, many victims were badly mutilated and, in some cases, burned beyond recognition. The silent and strong heroes who identified and buried the victims afforded one final semblance of dignity to the dehumanized bodies which had once cradled human souls. The silent courage of these heroes showcased how deeply we value the dignity of a human body even after life has departed from it. Showing final respects and honoring the dead is deeply rooted both in the ethics of Torah and in our life-revering culture. The mysterious ceremony of “egla arufa” typifies the care and dignity we afford the dead. If a dead and unattended-to body is discovered, it isn’t quietly buried. Instead, the public ceremony of egla arufa is conducted which includes confessionals by the leaders of the local towns. Leaders of nearby villages are held “accountable” because a person died on their watch, even though they were not directly culpable for the death. Tragic death cannot simply be ignored. You would think that an anonymous John Doe discovered in a barren field would not justify a public response. Typically, unidentified bodies belong to people who inhabit the margins of society. When established members of society go missing, family members and neighborhood friends conduct a search. Presumably, the unidentified corpse described in the Torah is a homeless person without much family, who has long ago fallen off the social radar. Yet, it is precisely when the dignity of human life is most vulnerable that it must be strongly reinforced. Specifically at this moment, when life can be easily taken for granted, the shared sanctity of every human being must be underscored. The public ceremony of egla arufa demonstrates that every human being is created equal in the eyes of Hashem, and each possesses divine dignity. By burying

the unidentified corpse, we honor the imprint of Hashem within each human being. Surprisingly, the midrash asserts that Yosef, in his first correspondence to his father, alluded to the egla arufa ceremony, reminding Ya’akov that decades earlier, they had jointly studied this topic. Evidently Yosef’s referencing of egla arufa delivered an important message to his father. Though initially Yosef was tragically ripped from his family and sold into slavery, he had now emerged as the second most powerful man on earth and was single-handedly steering a hungry world through an nightmarish famine. Joseph’s prescient wisdom and tireless dedication saved millions of lives. By preserving life and protecting human dignity, Joseph was, in effect, implementing the doctrines of egla arufa. The vicious assault of Oct 7 included numerous acts of horror and barbaric indecency. One of the most repulsive aspects of this massacre was the manner in which human bodies were treated. As if torturing and murdering in cold blood weren’t sufficiently nauseating, the terrorists mutilated and dismembered lifeless bodies. Pure and unadulterated evil, destruction and violence for absolutely no purpose. Their grotesque crimes demonstrated how little they regard human dignity and how cheap life is in the eyes of Islamic terrorists. Their dehumanizing crimes made our own response and our own gentle treatment of dead bodies even more critical. Our silent heroes including soldiers, Zaka volunteers and countless others who spent weeks identifying and burying victims, solemnly restored dignity to those who had been twice victimized- in life and in death. In providing this honor, many subjected themselves to hideous sights and unforgettable images which will forever mar their inner conscience. These heroes of human dignity paid a steep price in their sacred calling of providing honor to those beyond the veil of life. In many instances they operated under fire, risking their lives to restore dignity to lifeless bodies. This quiet heroism underscores the clash of ideologies within this military war: a battle is being waged between a culture

of death and a culture of human dignity. Between a culture which cheapens human life and one which treasures it. Our war isn’t merely a military encounter but a clash of cultures between competing value systems. Though these murderers speak in the name of religion they are nothing more than brutish atheists masquerading as religious people. They describe a god who doesn’t exist. Denying the traits of G-d is tantamount to denying His presence. We believe that all powerful Hashem lovingly created Man and endowed him with divine like traits of free will, consciousness, and creativity. Our respect for every human being acknowledges Man as the masterpiece of creation. We respect this divine masterpiece even when life has departed from it. Hashem’s divine image isn’t limited to our souls but to the bodies which once cradled divine essence. By defiling human bodies these charlatans scorn any notion of tzelem elokim. These violent beasts fictionalize about a god of blood lust and of anger, not one of compassion and mercy. By mutilating dead bodies, they mutilate the image of Hashem in our world. By mocking human dignity these violent murderers haven’t just committed a grave theological sin but have also doomed themselves and their cultures to failure and futility. Belief in human dignity isn’t just a religious value but powers human achievement and human progress. Through our G-d-given creativity we believe that we are empowered to improve our world and redeem it for Mankind. If Hashem is compassionate he desires human prosperity. If Hashem covets well-being we must be His agents to advance and improve our world. Prolonged human suffering isn’t consistent with a merciful Hashem who crafted human beings in His image. A culture which reveres human dignity is religiously driven to improve and advance the human condition. A culture with no concern for human dignity provides little incentive for change, growth, or progress. When life is cheap suffering is acceptable. When suffering is acceptable, progress is stunted. By mutilating bodies these barbarians don’t just disfigure Hashem. They maim their

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

own society and dismember themselves of any real progress or advancement. It is tragic but ironic that terrorists spent billions of dollars building machineries of death. Terror tunnels have absolutely no ulterior purpose of function other than havoc and death. Instead of investing in human beings these bloodthirsty terrorists invested in death. How much potential and how much human capital was completely wasted in the pursuit of blood and revenge? How many lives could have been improved had the monies been spent on life rather than on death. Our battle continues. They viciously defile life, and we gently protect it. They dehumanize and we revere. They holler over corpses while we honor the stillness of the departed. They will sink into their own tunnels of hatred while we build towers of achievement. There is only one winner in this clash of cultures.

AFTERWARD On my recent trip to the USA, I was deeply impressed by the profound engagement of Jewish communities in the war in Israel and how deeply sorrowed people are about the ongoing tragedy. I was also often asked how overseas Jewry could better identify with the suffering of Israelis. Perhaps the Shabbat prayers on behalf of IDF soldiers should be prefaced by a brief eulogy of a soldier who fell in battle. Additionally, this brief eulogy could be coupled with one of the many stories of heroism of the fighters valiantly defending our land and people. Personalization of the war may help people more deeply feel the joint pain of our people who have made such selfless sacrifices. The writer is a rabbi at Yeshivat Har Etzion/Gush, a hesder yeshiva. Bringing them home BY RABBANIT SALLY MAYER

Sometimes it feels like the parsha is talking directly to us about our situation today. Who can read Yehuda’s impassioned plea to release Binyamin without thinking of the hostages held by the evil Hamas terrorists in Gaza? The description of Ya’akov’s pain in losing Yosef without ever finding him, and Yehuda’s refusal to inflict the same pain on his father by losing Binyamin rings painfully true for so many families in Israel right now. Yehuda has evolved since the story we read in Vayeishev, two parshiot ago. This is the same Yehuda who many years previously had been the one to suggest selling Yosef! He was part of the group of brothers who sat to eat after they threw Yosef in the pit, as Yosef pleaded for mercy. And he must have been part of the cover-up, sending Yosef’s bloodstained coat to his father with the words, “haker na – recognize please.” Ya’akov was heartbroken and inconsolable at the end

Vayigash

1st Aliya (Kohen) – Bereishit 44:18-30

22 years after Yosef was sold by his brothers, they now face the prospect of their father Yaakov ‘losing’ another one of his sons, Binyamin. Yehuda does not yet know that the viceroy of Egypt standing in front of him is actually Yosef. He approaches Yosef, recounting Yosef’s demand to see Binyamin and Yaakov’s reluctance to let Binyamin leave. Having already ‘lost’ Rachel’s other son (Yosef ), Yaakov did not want disaster to befall Binyamin.

2nd Aliya (Levi) – 44:31-45:7

Yehuda states that if they return without Binyamin, Yaakov will surely die. Yehuda offers to take Binyamin’s place and remain as a slave to Yosef. Yosef orders everyone apart from his brothers out of

”Sometimes it feels like the Parasha is talking directly to us”

of that story. Yehuda then withdraws from his brothers, marrying a Canaanite woman. Such a marriage is a sign of leaving the family, as we see from Avraham’s insistence that Yitzchak marry a woman from his family, and from Yitzchak and Rivkah’s disapproval of Esav’s Canaanite wives. Yehuda’s son Onan exhibits a lack of brotherly responsibility in his refusal to have children with Tamar to carry on his deceased brother Er’s legacy, reminding us of Yehuda’s not taking responsibility for the safety of Yosef. And yet Yehuda finds the strength to turn things around. When Yehuda sends Tamar to her death for violating the requirement to wait to marry his next son, she uses the same

words that he and his brothers had used in their message to their father: “haker na – recognize please.” Yehuda indeed recognizes – recognizes that he is the father of the children she is carrying, and that “She is more righteous than I,” taking responsibility for Tamar at the cost of his honor and dignity. Yehuda in this week’s parsha exhibits more of that gevurah, strength and fortitude. He stands up to the viceroy of Egypt, unaware it is his long-lost brother Yosef, and demands that Binyamin be released. He speaks of being unable to see his father’s pain – a true reversal from where he was after selling Yosef and sending the bloodstained coat back to Ya’akov. And he offers himself instead,

I am your brother Joseph, whom you sold into Egypt! And now, do not be distressed and do not be angry with yourselves for selling me here, because it was to save lives that G-d sent me ahead of you… it was not you who sent me here, but G-d the room. He reveals his identity and asks if his father is still alive. He tells his ashamed brothers not to be sad; G-d had sent him on this mission in order to sustain them during the famine.

3rd Aliya (Shlishi) – 45:8-18

Yosef tells the brothers to go back to Cana’an to relate to Yaakov that he (Yosef ) is alive and is the viceroy of Egypt. Yaakov should come immediately to Egypt; Yosef will ensure their safety and sustenance in the remaining five years of famine. Yosef and Binyamin cry on one another’s necks.

4th Aliya (Revi’i) – 45:19-27

Pharaoh instructs Yosef to give his brothers wagons. Yosef sends them back with

money and provisions for the journey. He sends 20 laden donkeys for Yaakov. The brothers return home and tell Yaakov that Yosef is alive and is ruling over the land of Egypt. Initially, Yaakov does not believe them.

5th Aliya (Chamishi) – 45:28-46:27

Yaakov travels to Egypt, stopping at Beersheva to bring an offering. G-d appears to Yaakov in a night vision, allaying his fears of leaving Cana’an to go to Egypt, and promising to make his progeny into a great nation. The Torah lists the 70 members of Yaakov’s household who came to Egypt. Point to Consider: Which person is

willing to sacrifice his own life to rescue his brother and save his father from further anguish. This is the very gevurah that we see every day here in Israel from our soldiers, who risk their lives in attempts to rescue hostages, and fight to protect our ability to live in peace. From children who are serving and protecting their parents, even though we all wish we could protect our kids. This is family responsibility at its finest, channeling Yehuda’s inner strength in impossibly challenging circumstances. We are all waiting and praying for so many parents and spouses and siblings to be able to say the words that Ya’akov says in our parsha: “Incredible, my son Yosef is still alive!” May it be G-d’s Will. missing from the list of 70? (see Rashi to 46:26)

6th Aliya (Shishi) – 46:28-47:10

Yosef and Yaakov meet in the region of Goshen. Yosef falls on Yaakov’s neck and cries. Along with five of his brothers, Yosef goes to inform Pharaoh of his family’s arrival and tells him that they are sheep and cattle farmers. Pharaoh grants them the right to live in Goshen. Yosef brings Yaakov to meet Pharaoh. Yaakov blesses Pharaoh, who asks him his age.

7th Aliya (Shevi’i) – 47:11-27

Despite the famine in Egypt, Yosef makes sure that his family has food. The starving Egyptians give Yosef their animals in return for bread. The following year, they sell their land to Pharaoh in return for food and seed. They become serfs to Pharaoh, and are to give him one fifth of all produce from that land. Yosef fixes this as a national statute. Yaakov’s family increases greatly.

A Reason to Transcend (Part 2) BY RABBI SHMUEL REICHMAN

In our previous article, we began exploring the nature of chukim, and the potential limitations of reason and logic. To review, we framed out discussion with the famous line of the Vilna Gaon: “Where logic and human intellect ends, Jewish wisdom begins.” This implies that Judaism does not reject reason and logic, but builds upon it. We therefore began our discussion by exploring the purpose and utility of our intellect, and how it can help one ascertain logical proofs of spiritual truths, such as Hashem’s existence. However, there are also flaws with human logic, and careful consideration of the previously mentioned proofs shows this clearly. One may logically conclude that Hashem exists; the world is so infinitely complex; there must be a Creator behind it. However, there is a fundamental limit to logic. Logic may enable us to know that Hashem exists, but it does not help us know anything about Him. We may know, through reasoning, that there is a Creator, but logic alone does not allow us to have a relationship with Hashem, experience Him, or deeply connect with Him. Taking this idea a step further, we can question logical reasoning altogether. If the rules of physics and logic are based on personal, limited perceptions of a physical reality, human logic is extremely limited. As such, the Western world may be using the wrong tools to understand the ultimate truth. This is the view that the Ramban takes, articulating this point in his commentary to Sefer Vayikra (Ramban, Vayikra 16:8). The Ramban criticizes the assumption that logic is the ultimate tool for determining truth, pointing to the Greek philosophers as a paradigm of those who made this mistake. They denied anything that their intellects could not grasp, anything they could not scientifically quantify. They created a limited subjective truth, confined only to that which they could explain logically. The fault in this lies in the simple fact that rational knowledge is always limited. Let us explore this idea.

INHERENT LIMITATIONS OF THE INTELLECT If someone were to ask you to prove that you exist, you would seriously struggle to do so. One’s own existence simply cannot be rationally proven. This realization can startle the delicate mind, as it becomes clear that there are actually many aspects of our lives that we take for granted without being able to logically prove them. How do any of us know that our past experiences actually occurred? Perhaps someone created you a mere five minutes ago and implanted a full set of memories into your brain to make you believe that you’ve had a vibrant past. Perhaps the whole world itself popped

into existence five minutes ago! How do you know you’re Jewish? How do you know your parents are even your parents? Do you have absolute, unwavering proof? How do you know the sun will rise tomorrow morning? (In science and philosophy, this is known as the “Sunrise Problem.” There is no proof that the sun will rise tomorrow; we simply cannot remember a single day that the sun did not rise, and we know there is an overwhelmingly high probability that it will rise tomorrow. But this is not guarantee or a proof, only a probability.) Rational knowledge is never perfect. Absolute rational proof of Hashem, or anything for that matter, is impossible. The reason for this is simple: Hashem created us with free will, granting us the ability and responsibility to choose the truth. If Hashem’s existence was transparently obvious, or even fully derivable, there would essentially be no free will; you would be forced to act in accordance with Hashem’s will. The Nefesh Hachaim explains that this is the nature of angels. They understand reality with such a crystal-clear lens that it is virtually impossible for them to do anything but operate in line with the truth. While they do have a very limited sense of free will, doing something wrong as an angel would be akin to walking into a fire. They may have the free choice to do so, but the scalding hot flames are more than enough to stop them. If this is true, though, and logic is in fact limited, what lies beyond reason and logic? What did the Vilna Gaon mean when he said: “Where logic and human intellect ends, Jewish wisdom begins”? The answer is as follows: There is a deeper form of wisdom that we can refer to as post-rational, experiential wisdom. The intellectual, philosophical mind cannot grasp this wisdom, as it cannot be put into finite words. These truths cannot be proven but only known deep within the core of one’s soul. This spiritual wisdom should not be confused with that which is irrational, nor should it be mistaken for emotional experience. These truths do not contradict reason; they simply cannot be explained by it. The following are a few examples of this concept.

DOES LIFE HAVE MEANING AND PURPOSE? Rationally, there is no proof that your life has any meaning or purpose. Perhaps you are an evolved chimpanzee, a meaningless accident floating around on a random ball of matter in space. There is no way to prove that you are unique and destined for greatness or that you were created to fulfill a mission that you alone are uniquely qualified to achieve. There is no proof that you are a consciousness, a spiritual being, a neshamah, and that you have a moral conscience. And yet, we all deeply know this to be true. To take it even further, there is no way of proving that you, or anyone for that matter, exists. How do you objectively know that you are here, right now,

existing? It is impossible to get outside of your reality in order to rationally prove your own existence. Even Descartes’ proof of “I think, therefore I am” is only good enough to convince yourself that you exist. (Descartes’ proof is essentially as follows: The very fact that I can think and ask whether or not I exist is itself the very proof that I exist.) And this is not a rational proof but an experiential proof. Because I experience my own existence, I must therefore exist. Even so, this does not prove anyone else’s existence. How do you know that there is a genuine consciousness within other people’s bodies? Perhaps everyone else in the world is a robot with a nice layer of skin on their shell. You know these truths because you experience them deeply within yourself.

ARE YOU AWAKE RIGHT NOW? How do you know that you are not dreaming right now? When you are dreaming, do you not believe that you are awake? Why else would we feel so relieved upon waking from a nightmare, or so disappointed when we wake up from a fantastic dream? If the nightmare was clearly illusory, why do we breathe such a sigh of relief when we awake and realize it was just a dream? Why do we wish we can go right back to that splendid dream? It is because they seem objectively real. If so, how do you know you are not dreaming right now? How do you know with absolute certainty that you are awake? You know this because you experience it in the depths of your very self with the power of experiential knowledge. There is no rational way to prove that you are currently awake.

FREE WILL, LOVE, BEAUTY AND SPIRITUALITY This is the secret behind free will. Rationally and scientifically, the claim of free will is difficult to justify. Based on determinism, modern brain scans, and scientific evidence, decisions appear to be merely mechanical. The cause of anyone’s actions is simply a response to all the incoming stimuli. However, you know that you have free will. You feel the tug and pull every time you face an inner spiritual battle. You feel the pain and regret that comes with failure and the joy and pride that comes with victory. But will (ratzon) transcends logic, a principle that the scientific mind or machine can never comprehend. This is also the secret behind the concepts of love, beauty, and spirituality. There is no rational explanation behind the experience of love. Science can attest to the chemical and biological components of that connection, but the existential, spiritual, and consciousness expanding elements transcend intellect and reason. The same is true of beauty. What exactly makes something beautiful? Science cannot measure beauty, as there is no one thing that makes something beautiful. Beauty transcends the sum of its parts. It is when contrasting parts

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

21 DECEMBER 2023

melt together into a harmonious oneness that beauty emanates. Spirituality as well transcends reason. Science cannot measure anything other than that which is physical and quantifiable. That which is transcendent and experiential is deemed non-existent, as it lies in a realm beyond the capacity of physical tools.

YESTZIAS MITZRAYIM VS MATAN TORAH In Daas Tevunos, the Ramchal explains that this concept is the precise difference between the miracles of yetzias Mitzrayim and the miraculous experience of Matan Torah (Daas Tevunos 146). The miracles of yetzias Mitzrayim revealed Hashem’s existence. Through the ten makkos, k’rias Yam Suf, and the miracles in the midbar, Hashem revealed to both Klal Yisrael and the world as a whole that He exists and controls every facet of this world. However, there was no deeper, experiential knowledge of who Hashem is, only an external knowledge of how Hashem expresses Himself in the world; this type of knowledge is limited to our five physical senses. Matan Torah was a miracle of a completely different quality; it was experiential, as every member of Klal Yisrael had a personal experience of nevuah. Each individual had a post-rational, consciousness-expanding, transcendent experience of Hashem Himself. We didn’t witness Hashem outside ourselves; we experienced Him within our own consciousness, within ourselves, and beyond the boundaries and limitations of reason and intellect.

THE PURPOSE OF CHUKIM This is the purpose of a chok, a mitzvah that our intellect cannot fully grasp. A chok teaches us that complete truth lies beyond logic and reason. Logic leads us toward the truth, but ultimately, truth resides in a realm beyond reason. Only when we recognize the limitations of intellect can we experience deeper truth. This is why many commentators view chukim as more than just a means to submission and obedience. Chukim do have meaning behind them, but the full explanation lies beyond the grasp of human intellect. This is why many commentators give rational explanations for the chukim, something that may initially appear ironic and counterintuitive. Truth is beyond the rational or the post-rational and experiential; it contains both. Judaism does not reject the rational, but views it as a stepping-stone to the transcendent. The rational is not rejected but rather used as a stage in the process of reaching the ultimate truth. The rational explanations for chukim are the finite, mundane expression of their full, transcendent depth, and understanding the rational is the first step toward accessing the transcendent.

THE POWER OF EXPERIENCE A person can talk about Torah,

21 DECEMBER 2023 spirituality, Hashem, tefillah, and mitzvos all they want — days, weeks, months, even years — but until Torah life becomes an experiential reality, one that is more than intellectual truth, it will remain limited and incomplete. You cannot understand the depths of spiritual truth without experiencing it. The journey of a Jew is the journey of emunah, of faithfulness, of seeking out higher and more genuine expressions of truth. May we be inspired to enjoy every step of that process, to embark on a genuine journey toward truth, and to endlessly expand our experiential and existential understanding of the ultimate truth.

The continuing barrage of criticism levelled at the BBC for its ongoing coverage of Israel is not new in any respect. However, two recent events strike me as showing something perturbingly new, which is a pathology in the BBC’s attitude to its own reporting. The first example lies in the BBC’s live reporting of the events leading up to the conclusion of the ceasefire with Hamas, in the early hours of the morning of Friday 1 December. The BBC led that coverage, albeit temporarily, on its website with the headline: “Israel resumes combat against Hamas, ending seven-day ceasefire”. Those with half an eye on the events of

that morning will sense the inaccuracies in that headline just by reading it. But somewhat more alarming was that the headline didn’t even reflect the BBC’s own reporting. That reporting took the form of a live feed - accessible by clicking the headline itself - which showed an order of events in which Israel had intercepted a rocket fired from Gaza about an hour pre-ceasefire (04:06, UK time), followed by instances of explosions and gunfire in Gaza (04:37), before finally an update (05:00) that the ceasefire had formally concluded. One might reasonably ask how the BBC managed to conclude, from its own chronology, that Israel “resume[d] combat” and was responsible for “ending” the ceasefire. The second example comes in the reflections of the BBC’s International

Editor, Jeremy Bowen, on his live reporting of the strike on the al-Ahli Hospital on 17 October, and his self-confessed misattribution of that strike to Israeli forces. In an internal interview first broadcast on BBC News on 25 November, Bowen had the demeanour of an eyewitness being interviewed live at the scene when explaining why he saw fit to report only what he saw. But reporting what one saw is but a fraction of the journalist’s job. It is then necessary to strain every sinew to verify it… and where that isn’t possible - a fact not unknown to Bowen in the myriad of wars he’s reported from - to proceed only with the utmost caution. That Bowen then said he “doesn’t regret one thing” about the inaccuracy in his reporting, is an unedifying revelation about the seriousness with which the BBC treats journalistic errors of such significant gravity and widespread consequence as this. Taken together, these two events only further underline the need to mount sustained efforts against the BBC’s broader reporting of this conflict. Not just for getting it wrong, but for not caring, neither for the sake of it, nor for its consequences.” Naji Tilley, Hendon

Do We Have a Future? BY RABBI LEO DEE

In 1938, it was Germany, Poland, and Lithuania that determined the Final Solution for the “Jewish Problem”. Today, the world has again risen up against Israel and the Jewish people. The full horror of what we face is becoming more obvious every day. The hatred towards us has reached genocidal proportions. Do we have a future? We have always seen ourselves as G-d’s Chosen People, a light unto the nations. Where did we go wrong? We sing cheerfully at our Seder tables: “In every generation they rise up against us to destroy us”, and when we look at the news today we can see that our generation is no different. But, also in keeping with the Seder service, we find ourselves asking, “What makes our nation different from every other nation?” Many Rabbis will tell you that our origins as a nation differ from all other nations because we witnessed G-d’s presence en-masse at Mount Sinai, some 3,300 years ago. No other nation or religion makes such a claim. The New Testament claims that Jesus was resurrected in front of a small number of his followers, and the Koran claims that an angel appeared to Mohammed and told him that he would be the last prophet. More than that, both Christianity and Islam have the Hebrew Bible as their starting point for their belief. As Rabbi

Yehuda HaLevi writes in his book “The Kuzari”, the Jewish people’s relationship with G-d is like family. We have an unbroken chain going back to our encounter with Him, and that encounter is also the basis of verification for Christianity and Islam. Strangely, the authenticity of their religions is based on their belief that we Jews met G-d (but they say that G-d later changed His mind.) Because Jews were the people to whom G-d chose to reveal Himself, we are G-d’s witnesses in the world, or perhaps even His judges. In the words of Rabbi Y.Y. Jacobson, this creates a massive challenge for those who wish to be immoral today. They have two main options of how to deal with the Jews. They can either choose to emulate us and match our moral standard, or they can choose (like Hitler and Hamas) to try to destroy us and to redefine their own (im)morality. Historically, totalitarian regimes that wanted to take over the world by force opted for the latter strategy. That includes the Egyptians, the Greeks, the Romans, the Crusaders, the Nazis, and now the Jihadi Muslims. In fact, Hitler explained in “Mein Kampf” that in order to take over the world he first had to destroy the Jews, as they would be the only people who would likely stand in his way. Fortunately, the modern world has mostly adopted the first approach to Judaism, that of emulating us. This is actually the topic of my book, “Transforming

the World: The Jewish Impact on Modernity.” One of the examples that I examine is Shabbat. In ancient times, masters would delegate their work to slaves, who were expected to work seven days a week. The Torah introduced the idea that everyone should be given one day off every week. Christians adopted Shabbat but chose to keep it on Sunday, and Muslims chose to keep it on Friday. However, the origin of their Sabbaths remains enshrined in many of their languages. In Italian, Saturday is called “Sabato”, not Sunday, and in Arabic, Saturday is called “alSabt”, not Friday. There are many other examples of Torah-derived social innovations that transformed our world from barbarism to civilization. We introduced the ideas of compulsory education, community centres, the institution of marriage, and so much more. So, we haven’t gone wrong. In fact, if anything, we may have over-performed! A sign of the good that we represent is the reaction from the most evil elements of society. Following the October 7 pogrom, those who oppose everything that we stand for chose to identify themselves by marching down the streets of London, New York and Paris, shouting support for barbarian terrorists. If the role of the Jewish people is to spread G-d’s light in the world, then the world woke up on October 8 to see a new light shining on Zion. This light could potentially enable many

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

countries around the world to wake up to the threat of Jihadism. This war could be the first battle in a transformational phase for mankind. May G-d bring home our hostages and our soldiers swiftly and in good health, and may He bring redemption speedily in our days, Amen. Rabbi Leo Dee is an educator and lives in Efrat. His book “Transforming the World: The Jewish Impact on Modernity” has been republished in English and Hebrew in memory of his wife Lucy and daughters Maia and Rina, who were murdered by terrorists in April 2023.

Vayigash

Yehuda is aware of Yosef’s apparent plans to take Binyamin as a slave and is equally aware that there is no way in the world that the brothers can return home without Binyamin. He therefore approaches Yosef – the second in command in Egypt and pleads his point. He starts off respectfully, comparing him to Pharaoh (which was a compliment, a criticism and a threat all at once – see Rashi...) and explains the entire story from the beginning ending with the famous words, “For how can I go up to my father without the lad with me?!”. Yosef can no longer hold himself back and the great moment of revelation arrived. He shooed all the Egpytians out of the room and said the (also) famous words, “I am Yosef – is my father still alive?”. The

brothers were completely shocked and Yosef continues, “Don’t worry about having sold me here – for G-d sent me to sustain you (and all the countries affected by the famine for that matter)”. Yosef arranges his father’s transport to Egypt. Yosef sends items that hint to Yaakov that he remembers the Torah they learned 22 years earlier. Serach, daughter of Asher, gently breaks the news to her grandfather, after all this is quite heart-stopping information! Yaakov travels down to Egypt, receiving prophecy on the way – this is after all, the beginning of the long Jewish exile in Egypt, which will contain (rest for the immediate future but would be followed by) suffering,

sweat and tears for a significant part of 210 years. Yaakov sends Yehuda ahead of him – to establish a place of study. The Jewish people always had their priority in educating the next generation. Yaakov approaches Yosef and they cry. Yaakov has not seen his son for 22 YEARS! In expressing his awesome emotions, he recites the Shema. Yaakov is introduced to King Pharaoh who asks him his age! Yaakov replies that he had lived 130 years, “few and bad” – much heartache involved. Pharaoh asks the brothers of Yosef what their career has been and they advise that they were shepherds. Pharaoh offers the brothers of Yosef to live in Goshen – their

own territory. The Torah lists the 70 members of Yaakov’s family. It has been pointed out that only 69 are actually listed. Some explain that Hashem Himself was counted as the seventieth; others say that Yocheved was the seventieth, born as they entered the walls of Egypt. She was later going to be the mother of Moshe Rabbeinu who would redeem the Jews from Egypt. It must have been wonderful for Yaakov to finally be surrounded by all his children and grandchildren and for another 17 years. 17 is actually the numerical value of the Hebrew word, “Tov” and indeed these were “good” years all around, for our dear ansector Yaakov!

According to a survey in 2020, over three quarters of women and 68% of men in the UK wear glasses or contact lenses. Glasses are a piece of equipment which improve the lives of those who suffer from sight loss and help an individual carry on their hobbies, such as reading, and there is no shame in that. However, there is some stigma over using accessibility equipment, as people often believe this will remove their independence, but it’s really quite the opposite. Mobility equipment enables people to live a safer life at home and can gradually build the confidence to take part in everyday tasks. Occupational Therapy at Jewish Care is client-centred and involves the adaptation of everyday tasks to match the specific needs of each individual, helping them regain independence in all areas of their lives. Each person’s needs are different and with support from Occupational Therapy at Jewish Care, we identify challenging tasks and explore ways to adapt the environment to suit individual needs. Our aim is to ensure a person can continue to safely carry out activities which are important to them, either because they love and are passionate about them, or because they are necessary for daily life. When I assess a new client, I focus on the positives and encourage the client to see equipment as a tool. Together, we will think of an activity they’d love to participate in. Then I’ll explain how a piece of equipment is a tool for getting them closer to carrying out that goal. Activities such as going to the park, using the stairs in your home, or simply carrying a cup of tea and a biscuit can be made safe and simple and it shouldn’t be stigmatised. If you or someone you know could benefit from our support, please contact the Jewish Care Direct Helpline on 020 8922 2222 or email helpline@jcare.org.
