Khan must call-out and stop anti-Israel protests

Jewish leaders have called on London Mayor Sadiq Khan to condemn anti-Israel protestors targeting St John’s Wood Synagogue last Sunday.

Demonstrators breached exclusion zones and chanted for the destruction of Israel in a deplorable and frightening incident in north west London.

The Met Police had set up an exclusion zone but could not legally ban the demonstration. They observed and eventually moved the protesters on, though protests continued nearby.

The Met have received

praise but also criticism for not preventing the demonstration. Campaign Against Antisemitism CEO Gideon Falter said a “red line” had been crossed. “People marched up to the gates of the synagogue telling their supporters to make sure that they looked ‘visibly Jewish’,” he observed at the scene. “Because of them a synagogue which has had services all day, including children’s education, has essentially been placed behind a wall of police.”

Falter said that the streets were packed with police vans, hundreds of police officers “apparently for Jews to go about their normal business” going to a synagogue.

He also noted that demonstrators marched up to the synagogue chanting for the State of Israel to be “extinguished” and for Judaism to be “liberated from Zionism” as families and children gathered inside.

“We are sick and tired of it, the British people are also sick and tired of it, all that they are doing is intimidating a Jewish community in London, it is absolutely outrageous,” he raged.

Falter added: “A red line has been crossed yet again here in Britain. We are very grateful to the police for the exclusion zone that removed these people from the synagogue gates, but what an absolute disgrace and travesty that this is their method now.”

Following the incident, a CAA spokesman noted. “Despite repeated warnings from the Jewish community and clear signs of escalating extremism nationwide,

authorities have not ensured the protection of Jewish institutions, even in Jewish neighbourhoods.”

CAA called on London’s leadership to show moral clarity.

“Many within the community will be looking to Mayor Khan to condemn the targeting of a synagogue in the strongest possible terms,” they noted. “For British Jews, confidence in political and policing leadership has been severely eroded. Jewish communities deserve meaningful protection from those who seek to threaten or provoke them.”

Steve Winston, National Jewish Assembly, was livid: “It is utterly disgraceful that a hate-fuelled pro-Palestinian mob, whose organisers and participants ignored police orders, breached exclusion zones, and gathered outside the synagogue, was allowed to menace a place of worship. Even more disturbing is the admission from an attending officer that conditions were in place and protesters were not supposed to be there, but enforcement was avoided because they ‘didn’t want to antagonise the situation’.”

Wilson added: “This is a clear-cut example of two-tier policing, a police force that yet again appeases one group at the direct expense of another, leaving the Jewish community exposed in

order to avoid confrontation with those breaking the rules. Nothing about this behaviour serves Palestinians, it is pure, targeted hostility toward Jews and the sanctity of their synagogue.”

Jonathan Metliss, Action Against Discrimination chairman, witnessed the incident.

“The police do not have a clue where danger lies,” he said. “This was yet another insult to the pro-Israel contingent. Authorities including the Government, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood, police and Mayor Khan must put a stop to these pro-Palestinian demonstrations and marches. They are an incitement to racial hatred, especially outside a synagogue. Do they not understand that anti-Zionism is a cloak for antisemitism and Jew hatred. They should do so before it is too late. Police were there in great numbers and should be ashamed for allowing this to happen.”

United Synagogue President Saul Taylor said: “It cannot be that in modern Britain it is seen as acceptable to protest outside a place of worship, where Jews come together to pray and to attend community events. I call on those demonstrating to think again about the appropriateness of targeting our buildings and Jews who simply want to attend a Synagogue

and Jewish community centre.”

CAA also said targeting a synagogue demonstrated a “total failure” of policing policy.

“Not only have police chiefs abysmally failed to combat antisemitism over the past two years and midwifed an explosion of extremism in our country, but they cannot even protect Jewish institutions in Jewish neighbourhoods from the mob,” a spokesman said. “These extremists were doubtless emboldened by events across the pond, where a New York City synagogue was also targeted with the blessing of the Mayor-elect. Perhaps Mayor Khan will take this opportunity to distinguish himself from Zohran Mamdani and condemn the events in the strongest terms.”

They added: “British Jews know by now that expecting action from our politicians and police chiefs is pretty pointless, but here and there maybe they can at least say the right thing.”

The Met posted that they understood why the protest at the shul location would cause concern to some communities however could not ban the rally.

“There is no legal mechanism to ban the protest from taking place, however we have used Public Order Act conditions to prevent disorder and disruption,” a spokesman noted.

Protesters were meant to remain in a designated area. Officers were in the area during the afternoon and evening.

Hostage body released as survivors visit Ohel

The body of Dror Or, 48, from Kibbutz Be’eri is back in Israel for burial after 781 days in Gaza.

Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad handed over his remains to the Red Cross on Tuesday.

Or was murdered during the atrocity and his body was taken to Gaza. Listed initially as a hostage, his family were informed of his death in May 2024.

Or’s wife, Yonat, was murdered during the October 7 2023 terror attack. Two of their children, Alma and Noam, were abducted to Gaza and released in November 2023.

Their eldest son, Yeheli, was on pre-military service at the time of the attack in northern Israel.

Kibbutz Beeri, in a statement, said: “Or was an exemplary family man, a devoted friend, a calm, pleasant and kindhearted man with a gentle sense of humor and high sensitivity towards his surroundings. He loved good food, basketball, trips around the world, yoga exercises and even taught yoga himself.”

Two deceased hostages, Israeli Border Policeman Ran Gvili and Thai citizen Sudthisak Rinthalak remain in captivity after 781 days. Hamas were meant to hand over all hostages, living and dead, within 72 hours of the ceasefire deal. Gvili, 24, reportedly eliminated 14

terrorists before being killed in January 2024. Agricultural worker Rienthalak, 43, was kidnapped from Kibbutz Beeri on October 7.

Whilst Israel continues to mourn those tragically killed, freed hostages Segev Kalfon, Matan Angrest, Nimrod Cohen and Bar Kuperstein are readjusting to freedom.

Two years ago, their families visited the resting place of the Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson in New York to pray for their release. The quartet made the journey to the Ohel with their families to express thanks to the Chabad movement for standing by them throughout a tortuous ordeal.

teachings, holiness of the site and ways to inspire others.

“Many times, throughout the last two difficult years, we went to pray at the Ohel, every time we would come back strengthened to continue our efforts,” said Kobi Kalfon, father of Segev. “Now, that we were successful, we came to the Rebbe to say thank you.”

Rabbi Mendy Kotlarsky welcomed families and hosted the visit on behalf of Chabad.

“To be able to return with you all is so moving, we are closing the circle,” he said.

At the Ohel, the hostages and families recited Psalm 100, the Psalm of Thanksgiving and prayed for the return of the remaining hostages.

The group discussed the Rebbe’s

Rabbi Mendy Naftalin maintained contact with families, working alongside Yaron Cohen from the Prime Minister’s office and Yael Goren-Hezkiya, head of the Government Policy and Foreign Relations Division in the Kidnapped, Missing, and Returnees administration, to coordinate the visit.

Angrest, 22, was kidnapped from his tank near Nahal Oz that left his crew dead.

Despite severe injuries and torture, he demanded and received from his captors a siddur, Chumash, and tefillin. He recalled. “They protected me and gave me hope.”

Kuperstein’s mother lent his tefillin to enable thousands of Jews to pray worldwide. Dozens of Chabad Houses have

used them.

The Ohel is the most visited Jewish holy site outside Israel and draws some 400,000 visitors annually.

Weeks after the terror attack, 170 relatives of hostages chartered a flight to New York to pray at the Rebbe’s Ohel. In recent months, freed hostages including Omer Shem Tov, Agam Berger, Sasha Troufanov, Eli Sharabi, Edan Alexander and Noa Argaman have visited the Rebbe’s resting place.

US President Donald Trump, before his election, made a prayer visit on the first anniversary of the October 7 terror attacks.

Trump was accompanied by Yael, Adi and Roy Alexander, parents and brother of Edan.

In his letter marking the annual anniversary of the Rebbe’s passing, Trump wrote: ‘When Edan was returned earlier this year, the entire country felt the power of the Ohel and the Rebbe’s enduring example.’

Chadad said Trump’s daughter, Ivanka Trump, and son-in-law, Jared Kushner, have made media-free visits to the Ohel.

In recognition of the Rebbe’s work, beginning in 1978, every US president has proclaimed Education and Sharing Day, USA, on the Rebbe’s birthday. The Rebbe was posthumously awarded the Congressional Gold Medal in recognition of his “extraordinary life and work” in 1994.

Trump reviews Muslim Brotherhood

US President Donald Trump has begun the process to designate Muslim Brotherhood chapters as terrorists groups.

almost 100 years ago and has global branches.

The Muslim Brotherhood is banned in Jordan and Egypt. Trump considered designating the group a terrorist organisation during his first term after meeting Egyptian President Abdel Fatah El-Sisi.

The executive order is titled ‘Designation of certain Muslim Brotherhood Chapters as foreign terrorist organisations and specially designated global terrorists.’

Possibilities include economic sanctions and banning members from the US. An executive order cites ties to Hamas and ‘destabilisation campaigns’ that may harm US citizens and US interests.

“President Trump is confronting the Muslim Brotherhood’s transnational network, which fuels terrorism and destabilisation campaigns against US interests and allies in the Middle East,” the White House said in a statement.

The Brotherhood was founded in Egypt

Sebastian Gorka, Deputy Assistant to the President, Senior Director for Counter Terrorism, National Security Council, posted on X that “history has been made”.

Steve Winston, National Jewish Assembly, said: “President Trump’s decision to list the Muslim Brotherhood as a Foreign Terrorist Organisation rightly targets an ideology that spreads intolerance and undermines democratic values. The UK can no longer afford to turn a blind eye to the rise of Islamist extremism within our society and institutions, it is time for our government to act decisively and draw a clear line against this dangerous influence and spread of extremist beliefs that are increasingly visible in our society and, worryingly, within parts of our governing institutions.”

Dr Rahmeh Aladwan handed fifteenmonth interim suspension after online crusade against British Jews

Dr Rahmeh Aladwan, an NHS doctor who uses her social media and public appearances to wage a campaign of hatred against British Jews, has been suspended for fifteen months while an investigation takes place.

A spokesperson for Campaign Against Antisemitism said: “Dr Aladwan has been on an unapologetic crusade to harass the Jewish community and, until now, she has shockingly managed to do so without facing any consequences. We are pleased to see that common sense has finally prevailed – at least for the next fifteen months – and that an interim suspension has been handed down, following our complaints.

“It is inconceivable that a Jewish person would feel safe receiving

treatment from this doctor. The steps we have taken against Dr Aladwan are further evidence of our commitment to protect the Jewish community as the UK’s institutions continue to fail it. We expect the GMC to pursue its investigation speedily so that this doctor is removed from the medical profession without much further delay.”

EJC fights antisemitism

European Jewish Congress President Dr Moshe Kantor is aiming to eradicate antisemitism from social media platforms targeting disillusioned youth.

Addressing the Paris Mayors Summit on Antisemitism last week, Kantor said hatred had gone “viral”.

The social media environment, he noted, was a “breeding ground for antisemitism fuelled by conspiracy theories about global financial cabals and Jewish elites in control of the media”.

Kantor warned: “Social media has made it possible for hatred to spread instantly, often escalating into physical violence and even pogroms against Jews,” he said. “This must be combated by offering alternative and positive counter-narratives to disenfranchised youth, it must include access to housing, education, and jobs.”

and local authorities to take concrete actions.”

European Commission Coordinator on Combating Antisemitism and Fostering Jewish Life, Katharina von Schnurbein, who gave a keynote address, received a leadership award.

The Mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, and President of CRIF, Yonatan Arfi were amongst speakers.

Kantor told the summit their contribution was critical in the fight against new forms of antisemitism.

“The real battle against antisemitism is being waged not only at the national level but also on the streets and within municipalities,” he said. “We need to decentralise the fight and empower more mayors

Hidalgo expressed solidarity with French Jews.

“We will continue to support our Jewish community,” Hidalgo said. “It is part of the soul of Paris. We must protect it and help build a Europe where all Jewish families can live safely and grow in equality and fairness.”

“Defending the Jewish community means defending democracy and republican values. Our commitment reminds us that antisemitism always begins with Jews, but never ends with them. Fighting antisemitism is a universal struggle,” Arfi added.

The event, organised by the Combat Antisemitism Movement alongside the European Jewish Congress, CRIF, the City of Paris and European Association for the Preservation and Promotion of Jewish Culture and Heritage (AEPJ), follows a surge in antisemitism across Europe following the 10/7 terror attack.

Immanuel College Presents Production of Les Misérables and its West-End Worthy Praise

Immanuel College is proud to celebrate the resounding success of its recent production of Les Misérables School Edition, which concluded its run to standing ovations at every performance and

glowing acclaim from audiences, staff, and community members alike.

This ambitious production brought Victor Hugo’s timeless story of resilience, justice, and redemption to the stage with a level of professionalism and emotional depth described by attendees as “virtually indistinguishable from a West End production.”

From the powerful vocals of the student cast to the sweeping orchestrations (played by the band), and stunning staging, the show showcased the extraordinary talent, dedication, and teamwork of the music department

Chief Rabbi Goldschmidt Meets German Leadership

Chief Rabbi Pinchas Goldschmidt, President of the Conference of European Rabbis (CER), held a series of high-level meetings this week in Berlin with senior representatives of Germany.

The delegation was received by Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, followed by talks with Federal Minister of Education and Research Karin Prien, senior officials in the Federal Chancellery, and the Federal Ministry of the Interior and Community. These meetings were central to addressing the growing challenges facing Jewish communities in Germany and Europe.

Chief Rabbi Goldschmidt was accompanied in Berlin by Gady Gronich, Chief of Staff and CEO of the CER, and Oliver Rolofs, Senior Advisor to the CER and to its President. As part of the visit, the delegation also met with the Editors-in-Chief of BILD, Germany’s largest media outlet, as well as with Nasimi Aghayev, Ambassador of the Republic of Azerbaijan to Germany to discuss fields of future cooperation..

Two years after the Hamas terrorist attack on Israel, Jewish communities across Europe face a dramatic rise in

antisemitism and increasing concerns for their security and future. Chief Rabbi Goldschmidt noted that Jewish citizens are confronted with growing hostility, warning in particular about the persistently underestimated threats posed by left-wing and Muslim-motivated extremism. He cautioned against a “false tolerance towards intolerance,” emphasizing that widespread antisemitism has historically been a dangerous precursor to broader societal crises.

In discussions with Minister Karin Prien and government officials, measures to strengthen antisemitism prevention, enhance protection for Jewish communities, and deepen international cooperation were addressed. The need for robust educational initiatives and a more coordinated European response was strongly underscored.

The geopolitical environment shaped by U.S. President Donald Trump’s recently presented 21-Point Peace Plan also played a role in the talks. The delegation examined how the CER could contribute to Point 19, which calls for an interreligious dialogue process for tolerance and coexistence, and how such an initiative might be implemented across Europe.

Chief Rabbi Goldschmidt further introduced TJAP – The Jewish Ambassador Program, a CER initiative designed to renew approaches to Holocaust remembrance and strengthen Jewish education. Through direct encounters with Jewish “Ambassadors” – now over 500 encounters, reaching around 250,000 people – the program fosters an authentic understanding of Jewish life, counters prejudice, and promotes

and its students.

“The cast and crew poured their hearts into this production, and the audience response has been overwhelming,” said Samantha Cooper.

“To see our students rise to the challenge of such a demanding musical— and do so with such maturity, artistry, emotion and passion—has been truly inspiring”. said Stephen Levey.

The Head, teachers, and the audience praised the show’s emotional impact, production quality, and the students’ remarkable professionalism. Many commented that the performance set a “new standard” for the College and demonstrated the transformative power of arts education. Head, Dan Endlar added “This was so much more than a school production. We are immensely proud of all the students and staff involved, for the masterpiece they delivered: not a note out of tune, not a prop out of place, not a single

intercultural dialogue in schools, public institutions, and companies.

The meetings concluded with a shared commitment to deepening cooperation with the German government, strengthening political and societal support for

British Buyers Turning to Israel: The Expert Guide Every Family Needs Before Investing

From mortgages to lawyers, new builds to rental yields—this clear guide explains what London buyers must know before entering the Israeli market.

For a growing number of British Jews, the idea of owning a home in Israel has moved from an emotional aspiration to a serious, practical investment strategy. Whether driven by future Aliyah plans, a desire for a holiday home, or the appeal of strong long-term capital growth, London buyers are increasingly looking toward Israel as a stable and meaningful property market. But even seasoned buyers in the UK often find the process unfamiliar, fast-paced, and filled with nuances that don’t exist in the British system.

This expert guide breaks down the process step-by-step, offering clarity, direction, and confidence for anyone considering the exciting move of purchasing property in Israel.

1. KNOW YOUR BUDGET - ISRAEL WORKS DIFFERENTLY

Unlike the UK, Israel has no mortgage contingencies. Once you sign a contract, you’re committed—financing approved or not. This single difference is the number one rule every London buyer must understand.

That’s why the first step is obtaining a realistic mortgage assessment from an Israeli mortgage broker. For buyers coming from abroad, Israeli banks typically approve up to 50% loan-to-value, sometimes up to 60% with strong income documentation.

Buyers must also factor in approximately 12% in purchasing costs: purchase tax, lawyers’ fees, buyer’s agent fees, mortgage arrangement fees, bank charges, and currency transfer costs. Many UK families underestimate this, but with proper planning, everything can be mapped out in advance so there are no surprises.

Let us connect you to our panel of Mortgage experts.

2. LEGAL REPRESENTATION:

YOUR MOST CRITICAL ALLY

Israel’s legal system differs significantly from England and Wales. Your lawyer plays a far more involved role—verifying ownership, performing land registry checks, reviewing development rights, ensuring compliance, and coordinating all stages of due diligence.

Because many UK buyers cannot physically attend signatures or inspections, it is standard to grant Power of Attorney to a lawyer or trusted representative in Israel. This enables the entire process to continue smoothly without international delays for apostilles or couriering documents. Working with a legal team experienced with Anglo clients is essential. It ensures clarity, avoids misunderstandings, and

protects you structurally at every stage.

Let us connect you to our panel of legal experts .

3. CURRENCY TRANSFER: DON’T LEAVE THIS TO CHANCE

Most UK buyers are transferring funds in sterling or dollars, which means currency planning is critical. Incorrectly transferred funds—or funds lacking proper documentation—can be delayed or even rejected by Israeli banks.

A good currency advisor helps you:

• Secure better rates than UK retail banks

• Lock in future rates using forward contracts

• Manage transfers over time

• Prepare exact documentation Israeli banks demand

Given how GBP/NIS has fluctuated over the last decade, the savings can be substantial.

Let us connect you to our panel of Forex Experts.

4. NEW BUILD OR SECOND-HAND? UNDERSTANDING THE OPTIONS

Israel’s market consists of two main categories: new builds/off-plan projects and second-hand apartments.

New Builds Offer:

• Lower initial cash outlay (payments spread across 2–4 years)

• Modern layouts, lifts, balconies, parking, and safety rooms

• Strong capital growth in developing neighbourhoods

• Ideal for families planning Aliyah in the next few years

Second-Hand Apartments Offer:

• Immediate occupancy or immediate rental

• Often larger internal sizes

• Established communities and infrastructure

• Strong long-term desirability

Many London buyers are drawn to new projects because payment plans allow for more flexible budgeting and organized mortgage approval timelines. However, for those looking for immediate rental income, second-hand homes can be an excellent choice.

Let us introduce you to options across Israel.

5. THE OVERLOOKED STAGE: PROFESSIONAL PROJECT MANAGEMENT

For anyone purchasing a new build or renovating a

second-hand property, the post-purchase stage is often the most demanding. From material selections and upgrades to managing contractors, changes, and deadlines, it can be overwhelming—especially from abroad.

A professional Project Management Division removes the pressure entirely. They coordinate with developers, review plans, oversee site visits, handle upgrades, manage timelines, and ensure the final handover matches the contract.

For many UK clients, this becomes the single greatest value-add—turning a complicated, years-long process into a seamless experience.

Find out how our Expert Project Management division can help you every step of the way.

6. RENTING YOUR PROPERTY: TURNINGINVESTMENT INTO INCOME

For buyers who won’t use the property immediately, rental management is essential. A dedicated property management team handles:

• Tenant sourcing & screening

• Advertising & lease handling

• Maintenance & repair coordination

• Utility registration

• Monthly reporting

• Rent collection

This turns your Israeli property into a hands-free investment with both yield and appreciation.

Our Rental Division will ensure your return as soon as possible .

7. WHERE LONDON BUYERS ARE PURCHASING TODAY

Different families prioritise different needs—community, lifestyle, access to schools, or future Aliyah plans. Today’s top locations include:

• Jerusalem: Arnona, Katamon, Baka, Talpiyot

• Ramat Beit Shemesh Aleph & Neve Shamir: extremely popular with UK families

• North Tel Aviv & Tel Aviv East: strong long-term appreciation

• Netanya / Ir Yamim: modern, beachfront, excellent rentals

• Ashkelon: value-for-money, highgrowth potential

• Kiryat Gat / Carmei Gat: affordable new builds with strong Anglo interest

• The North: larger spaces, excellent prices, community developments growing

Your best location depends on your timeline, budget, and lifestyle priorities.

See www.israel-properties.com for more options

8. THE BOTTOM LINE: BUYING IN ISRAEL IS ACHIEVABLE AND REWARDING

Despite the differences between the UK and Israeli buying systems, purchasing in Israel is straightforward when you have proper guidance. With the right professionals supporting you—mortgage brokers, lawyers, currency specialists, and project managers—the process becomes smooth, predictable, and deeply enjoyable. For many families, buying a home in Israel is not only a financial investment but a long-term emotional and spiritual one. With demand rising, strong communities expanding, and limited supply in key areas, now is an ideal time for London buyers to explore the market with confidence.

UK Israel Alliance hosts 300 people for In Conversation with Douglas Murray

UK Israel Alliance (UKIA) held its inaugural event in Central London last week with 300 people attending an ‘In Conversation’ with Douglas Murray.

UKIA - the new name of UK Israel Future Projects – is committed to strengthening the crucial bilateral relationship between the UK and Israel. Uniquely, UKIA brings together thought leaders and activists in support of Israel from all political, religious and ethnic backgrounds.

Interviewed by The Daily Telegraph’s award-winning Allison Pearson, Murray shared his reflections on reporting from inside Israel and Gaza in the wake of Hamas’s 7th October attack, the Abraham Accords’ reshaping of the region, and the future of pro-Israel advocacy.

Committee members Bernard Shapero and Sir William Shawcross paid tribute to the late Martin Green who passed away earlier this year aged 92. The founder of UK Israel Future Projects was a passionate Zionist and mainstay in the pro-Israel community.

Alongside UKIA supporters, the event was attended by cross-party members from both Houses of Parliament, diplomats, and journalists.

UKIA is chaired by Lord Bew and its multi-faith Committee includes, Sir William Shawcross, Tim Vince, Simon Marks, Bernard Shapero and Dr Efrat Sopher.

UKIA is excited to host an ongoing series of events with high-profile speakers from around the world and covering the most pressing issues facing the UK, Israel and our societies.

UKIA Chair Lord Bew said: “It’s exciting to see the depth of support for Israel outside the Jewish community. UKIA’s duty is to proactively reach Brits from all walks of life and proudly celebrate the fact that our two countries are stronger together. Israel has been subjected to an appalling smear campaign, but it is abundantly clear that many Brits cherish the shared values our great countries stand for”.

Aish Leeds hosts biggest student Shabbat experience in the UK this year

‘Shabbat 4 Jews’ welcomed over 300 Jewish students to Leeds for a spectacular weekend of unity and Jewish spirit.

Rabbi Binyomin and Rebbetzin Shani Rose - the Aish family in Leeds - described the event as feeling like “a Bar Mitzvah.” “Everything was beautifully laid out, the energy was high, and the

ambiance was perfect.”

Building on the momentum of ‘Booze 4 Jews,’ an event organised by the Union of Jewish Students (UJS), Rabbi Rose seized the opportunity to give students a powerful Shabbat experience while they were all gathered together in the same city.

The weekend drew Aish representatives from across the country, including Rabbi Chaim and Michal Lehrer from

Birmingham, Rabbi Yanki and Tamara Davis from Nottingham, and Rabbi Rafi and Chavi Stemmer, known for leading the Budapest 400 inter-railers FND. The entire experience was coordinated by Rabbi Shauly Strom, director of Aish Northern Campuses, and Rebbetzin Adina Strom.

The event opened with candle lighting and an early Kiddush, followed by a huge influx of students pouring into the Rose’s home, to be greeted with a warm l’chaim, and an abundance of sushi.

Rabbi Rose, who also served as chazan for Kabbalat Shabbat, said “The energy in the room as 300 students danced was beyond anything words can capture!” Each song sparked spirited dancing as students sang with full hearts - a true reflection of their joy and connection.

UJS president Louis Danker paid tribute to the event, saying, “Amid the challenges of the past few years, this

made me incredibly proud of our resilient Jewish student communities.”

Friday night dinner was held in a large marquee set up in the garden, with tables beautifully laid with candles, flowers and elegant place settings. During the meal, student awards were presented and the winner of the ‘Bold Innovation Award,’ Adam Bannon - creator of the Aish Leeds university football team “Aishy Milan” shared, “We created a home where the joy of football and the richness of Judaism unite the boys together.”

He added, “So much of this success is owed to Rabbi Rose, whose wisdom and encouragement have been a tremendous help to both the team and me personally throughout my time at Leeds.”

Shabbat lunch brought more singing and dancing, alongside meaningful personal testimonies from students.

As Shabbat came to a close, Havdallah began with a deeply moving testimony from 97-year-old Auschwitz survivor Arik Hersch. Rabbi Strom remarked, “Having the opportunity to have Arik join us for Havdallah and for the students to interact with him was truly fortifying.”

Fireworks illuminated the Leeds sky, offering a fitting finale as students reflected on the unforgettable Shabbat they had experienced.

Proud of What?

In recent years it has become almost obligatory to begin Jewish commentary with the familiar refrain that the past two years have changed everything and that Jews must now stand proud and declare Am Yisrael Chai. It is heartfelt. It is true. Yet it is also not new.

For as long as I can remember I have been urging students to feel pride in who they are. A decade ago I found myself standing outside the study hall of Yeshivat Chachmei Lublin with fifty university students from across the United Kingdom. We were in Poland exploring the ruins and the brilliance of our history. I

spoke to them about Rabbi Meir Shapiro, who founded the Daf Yomi and built that magnificent yeshiva. He lived through turbulent political times yet carried himself with unwavering dignity. He served in the Polish parliament dressed exactly as he was, a proud rabbi, and the giant portrait that hangs in the building shows him holding a Torah scroll. It could not be more unmistakably Jewish. His presence commanded respect from Jews and non-Jews alike. The message to our students was simple. Never shrink from who you are. Hold your identity upright. Rabbi Sacks once expressed it perfectly that non-Jews respect Jews who respect themselves.

So, the idea of Jewish pride is hardly revolutionary. It is also not clear that it achieves what people hope it will. Jews

have never really succeeded in hiding anyway. Visibility is our reality and there is a certain absurdity in telling a people who have carried history on their back for thousands of years to pretend otherwise. It is certainly true that we should not crouch in fear, especially when facing hostility. And by and large we do not. I have watched Jews on campuses, in media interviews, at international summits, speak with courage and conviction. I have watched Israel demonstrate resilience and leadership on the world stage. And yet the challenges facing world Jewry remain stubbornly unchanged. Antisemitism is not shrinking in proportion to our increasing displays of pride. Hatred does not vanish simply because we speak more loudly.

So what actually does change public attitudes? What can soften hearts and open minds?

I have an idea. It might not be universally popular, but I believe it is essential. We tell people to be proud. But proud of what? What does it actually mean to be a proud Jew? What does it mean to be a Jew at all?

I believe that everything would look different if we understood the substance behind our pride rather than relying on familiar slogans. Yes, we are proud to stand for life and to reject terror. Yes, we are proud of our scientists, our innovators, our Nobel laureates, and all the extraordinary contributions Jews have made to the world. But none of that is uniquely Jewish. That is what moral human beings

support. That is what flourishing societies celebrate.

The heart of Jewish pride must come from the heart of the Jewish story. It must come from the values we inherited, the wisdom that shaped us, the covenant that binds us. If we want the call to be Jewish and proud to matter, it must be rooted in knowledge. Knowledge of the long arc of our history. Knowledge of the moral and philosophical framework that Judaism built regarding responsibility, dignity, community, and family. Knowledge of the rituals that shape our rhythm and the sanctity that flows through them. Knowledge not just of culture but of covenant. And then comes the hardest part. Pride must be authentic. Few things push people further away than a grand declaration about the beauty of Judaism spoken by someone whose life reflects none of it. Pride in values, stories and wisdom that are not embodied by those sharing it, will fall on deaf ears.

So yes, be proud. But pride is not the ceiling. It is the invitation. If we want a different conversation in the world, if we want a shift in how people see Jews, then pride cannot be the end. It must be the beginning.

Be proud. But even more, be Jewish. Live it. Learn it. Carry it with integrity. Let your pride flow from something real. When Jewish pride grows out of Jewish life, the world feels it. And so do we.

Building Israel’s Future - A Legacy That Lasts Forever

Israel’s story has always been powered by ordinary people doing extraordinary things. Long before the State was founded, Jews around the world dropped coins into Blue Boxes, helping turn desert plains into communities, farms, and cities. That same spirit lives on today through those who choose to leave a legacy to Israel - supporters who ensure that its strength, security, and hope endure for generations.

The pioneering Jewish philanthropist Sir Moses Montefiore believed that true legacy comes from building opportunities for others. As he famously said, “I measure my wealth not by the money I keep, but by the money I give away.”

For over 120 years, JNF UK has been part of that same commitment to nation-building. From draining swamps and planting forests to creating jobs and supporting new immigrants, JNF UK helped lay the foundations of the modern State. In recent years, JNF UK has focused on strengthening the Negev and Galilee, supporting youth at risk, building business hubs, improving healthcare facilities, and helping peripheral communities flourish.

Much of this vital work is possible thanks to the generosity of those who remember Israel through a gift in their Will. Legacy gifts have allowed JNF UK to support education and welfare, create green spaces, help children at risk, empower young leaders, and care for the elderly and vulnerable.

Behind every project is a story. Marie Sherrett, shaped by the aftermath of the Holocaust, left a gift that renovated a senior centre in Sderot. Eric Linton, a

lifelong Zionist, ensured that his legacy would support children in the Negev. Sheila and John Ottensooser enabled the building of a Young Adult Centre to empower young people with education, guidance and community support. Their kindness continues to touch lives every day - a testament to the power of giving with purpose.

Leaving a gift in your Will to Israel through JNF UK is one of the most meaningful ways to ensure your values live on.

Large or small, every legacy helps build schools, strengthen hospitals, restore homes, support vulnerable families, and empower the next generation.

By choosing JNF UK, you place your legacy in the hands of an organisation with unmatched integrity, experience and expertise. Our dedicated Legacy Department offers:

• Will Services – compassionate guidance throughout the drafting process

• Executorship – ensuring your wishes are honoured

• Inheritance Tax Advice – helping you maximise the impact of your gift

• Lasting Power of Attorney –peace of mind for the future

• Pastoral Care – unique within the Jewish community, ensuring your affairs are handled with dignity during and after your lifetime

This holistic, personal approach sets JNF UK apart. Legacy donors often describe it as entrusting their life’s values to a partner that will steward them with care.

The impact of legacies is visible across Israel - in the laughter of children in kindergartens, in the music filled conservatories in the Negev, in the growth of business centres in the desert, and in the resilience of families rebuilding their lives.

Today, Israel faces new and demanding challenges, but the opportunity to make a difference has never been greater. As Carolyn Addleman, JNF UK’s Director of Legacies, writes: “Leaving a gift in your Will, no matter how small or large, is one of the most valuable and lasting ways you forge an everlasting bond with Israel.”

Your legacy will safeguard Israel’s future - strengthening its communities, protecting its people, and helping the next generation inherit a thriving, resilient homeland.

Rachel’s Secret

At the time of this writing, Palestinian terrorists are brazenly attempting to capture Kever Rachel, Rachel’s tomb. What relevance do they have to the tomb of our Bubby Rachel? How can we bring this nonsensical act into the realm of understanding?

“And it was, in the morning, that behold it was Leah (Breishis 29:25)!” Note the difficulty: Was she not Leah the evening before as well? Thus, explains Rashi, that in the evening, under the Chuppah, Yaakov actually thought Leah was Rachel. Yaakov and Rachel, in anticipation of Lavan’s treachery, devised a secret sign to allow Yaakov to disclose the deception. However, when Rachel saw her father setting up Leah in her place, she had a change of heart. “My sister will be mortified!” Rachel, overwhelmed by sympathy, gave the secret sign to her sister.

A superficial reading makes Rachel’s act sound very nice and altruistic. After all, she spared her sister shame. Surely, each of us would have done the same.

Taking a deeper, more accurate look, however, we will discover that concealed between the lines lies a superhuman self-sacrifice of unparalleled proportions. Remember, Yaakov worked for Rachel for seven years. Their profound love made it seem like only a few days (v. 20). During all this time, Rachel anticipated the day she would finally marry her beloved. At the last minute, Rachel realized that her unscrupulous father had deceived them, and was dressing Leah in the wedding gown. How would we have felt under such circumstances? She was losing her husband! She had no way of knowing that Yaakov would agree afterward to marry her as well. As far as she was concerned, she was relinquishing Yaakov forever.

All Rachel had to do was make a scene so that Yaakov would realize that she was not the bride. But Rachel kept quiet. Moreover, she gave her sister the secret sign, so that Yaakov would think he was actually marrying Rachel. Rachel did everything possible to spare her sister disgrace. All this, despite the permanent loss of her husband.

In addition, Yaakov was not just a husband. He was to become the third and culminating patriarch of the Jewish nation. Rachel had a one-time opportunity to mother the Shivtei Kah, the tribes of Hashem.

Furthermore, by failing to marry Yaakov, Rachel would surely be suggested as a shidduch for the wicked Esav. “Everyone was saying: Rivka has two sons, and Lavan has two daughters. The older daughter for the older son, and the younger daughter for the younger son (Rashi 29:17).” Leah had been the natural bashert (intended) for Esav. Now that Leah was marrying Yaakov, Rachel would obviously be expected to marry Esav. Moreover, Esav

apparently had his eyes set on Rachel (See Rashi 30:22,33:7). Rachel was systematically forfeiting absolutely everything for her sister’s sake!

But the greatest question of all: Why did Rachel do it? Why didn’t she protest this grave injustice? And why did she provide Leah with the secret sign?

Says the Mishna: “One who humiliates his friend publicly... though he may have Torah and good deeds, he has no share in the World to Come (Avos 3:11).” A person can be a consummate Tzaddik, he can learn Torah 24/7, he can donate one fifth of his income to Tzedaka, he can dedicate his life to helping others, yet he will have no place in the Afterlife!

“All who descend to Gehinnom ascend except for three, who descend and never ascend... and a person who humiliates his friend publicly.” What goes down, must come up. Except for this.

“A person should sooner throw himself into a fiery furnace, before he embarrasses his friend publicly (Kesuvos 67b).”

According to some opinions, a person is obligated to give up his life before humiliating someone! (Tosfos, Sotah 10b; Shaarei Teshuva 3:139; Minchas Shlomo I:7)

Consequently, Rachel did not protest. Had she made a scene, what would she have gained? She may have married Yaakov, mothered the twelve tribes, and spared herself a life with Esav, but in the end she would have lost. Of what benefit are all these things if one has no place to enjoy it after all is said and done?

But from Rachel, we learn an additional lesson. To absolve herself from eternal condemnation, it would have been sufficient to keep quiet. Any shame Leah experienced would have been attributed to her father, Lavan. Yet Rachel did far more that simply keep quiet. She gave the secret code to Leah. Totally beyond anyone’s expectations, Rachel went the extra mile to spare Leah pain.

What reward did Rachel receive for her unrivaled self-sacrifice? First of all, she lost nothing. Human logic dictates that a person is justified in cutting corners to receive what he feels is coming to him. Had Rachel cut corners, had she contributed even indirectly to her sister’s humiliation, she would have ended up bankrupt. By doing what was right, Rachel lost nothing. She married Yaakov, became one of the matriarchs, and thus stayed out of the clutches of Esav.

Furthermore, let us not forget that Rachel was born barren; she was incapable of giving birth (Breishis 29:31). Had she protested, and subsequently married Yaakov in a straightforward manner, she may never have mothered a child. It was solely due to her willingness to forego her future that she attained motherhood (See Rashi 30:22).

But the greatest reward of all is evident from the Medrash (Introduction to Eichah Rabba). After the destruction of the Bais HaMikdash, various Tzaddikim arose to plead on behalf of the Jewish people. It was an all-star cast. Avraham, Yitzchak, Yaakov, Moshe, etc., all tried to rescind the tragic decree and to restore the Jewish people to their former glory. One by one, their prayers were rejected by Hashem; All their vast merits did not help them! Finally, one last voice made itself heard:

“At that moment, Rachel our mother jumped up and said to Hashem, ‘Master of the universe, You well know that Your servant Yaakov loved me deeply, and he worked for my father for seven years. When those seven years were up and the time of my wedding to my husband arrived, my father schemed to substitute my sister for me, and this was terribly difficult for me. I informed my husband, and I gave him a sign so that he could distinguish between my sister and me, to thwart my father’s scheme. Afterwards, I regretted what I had done, and I suppressed my yearning. I had mercy on my sister, so that she would feel no shame. In the evening, they gave my sister to my husband in my stead, and I gave my sister all of the signs that I had given to my husband, so that he would think she was Rachel... I was not jealous of her, and I did not humiliate her. If I, mere flesh and blood, dust and ashes, did not envy my competitor and did not humiliate her, You, the everlasting, merciful King, why did You envy idolatry which has no substance, and You exiled

my children, and they were killed by the sword, and the enemies did with them as they pleased?’

“Immediately, Hashem’s mercy was aroused and He said, ‘For you, Rachel, will I return Yisrael to their place.’ As it is written, ‘Thus said Hashem, A voice is heard on high, wailing, bitter weeping, Rachel weeps for her children; she refuses to be consoled for her children, for they are gone. Thus said Hashem, Restrain your voice from weeping and your eyes from tears; for there is reward for your accomplishment and they will return from the enemy’s land. There is hope for your future and your children will return to their border.’(Yirmiyah 31:14-16)”

The secret to our success and to our ultimate redemption was revealed by Rachel Imeinu. Follow in her footsteps, develop sensitivities to our fellow man, abstain from embarrassing others, and Hashem will rescue us posthaste. The Palestinians, hoping to break our spirit, focus their rage on a tomb. Unbeknownst to them, the real secret lies within us.

“There is hope for your future your children will return!”

Dear Rabbi

A few weeks ago, you wrote that despite rising antisemitism, British Jews don’t need to panic, flee, or make Aliyah en masse. But after events of this week, whether the revelation about the football ban on Israelis, or the protesters outside a synagogue, and police who seem powerless only when Jews are targeted - do you still stand by that?

Howard

Dear Howard

I stand by the principle that Jews should never be bullied into fleeing their homes. But this week has made something painfully clear: Britain is failing its Jewish citizens in ways we haven’t seen for generations. And pretending otherwise won’t protect anyone.

We saw West Midlands Police ban Israeli and Jewish fans from a football match in Birmingham - a decision now exposed as being based on “intelligence” the Dutch police themselves describe as untrue, inaccurate, or simply meaningless. That isn’t a misunderstanding. It looks like Britain’s second-largest police force inventing threats to appease extremists who increasingly dictate the atmosphere on our streets. And instead of apologising, they are doubling down.

Then came this past Sunday in London. A pro-Palestine group chose to protest outside a synagogue. Not outside an embassy or government building - a synagogue. Their “provocation”? Jewish families attending an Aliyah event. And the Metropolitan Police claimed there was “no legal mechanism” to stop it. Interesting. Because just weeks ago, the same police did find a legal mechanism to ban an anti-immigration protest in Tower Hamlets. So, it seems the law is very flexible, except when Jews are the ones targeted. Despite heavy policing, protesters still made their way near the front of the synagogue. This, mere weeks after two people were murdered outside a synagogue in Manchester.

Let’s be honest: If this had been outside a mosque, the protest would have been shut down. If the targeted community weren’t Jewish, the police response would have looked dramatically different. And everyone knows it.

We worried Jeremy Corbyn

would be a catastrophe for British Jews. Yet Keir Starmer’s Britain is proving no better. To the many Jews who voted Labour thinking it was the “safe” choice - stop feeding the alligator and hoping it will eat you last.

None of this means we should run. But it does mean we must stop pretending. Jews are being handed second-class protection, second-class rights, and second-class policing. And once a society normalises that, it rarely stops on its own.

Britain can do better. Britain must do better. But it will not happen by itself. It will change only when we stop just hoping and start demanding what every other community takes for granted: equal protection under the law. That means calling out double standards when we see them, pushing back against moral cowardice, and refusing to be intimidated into silence. We must raise our voices - loudly,

clearly, and without apology. Because hoping for the best has never achieved a thing. Only when we speak with strength and demand fairness will Britain be forced to remember the standards it claims to uphold.
