Thanksgiving, and the start of the holiday season, has always been one of my favorite times of year. The fun of getting together with family and friends, the anticipation for the holiday season, the decorating, the shopping—it all makes the beginning of winter so festive and enjoyable!

Jefferson Market - Out With the Old and In With the New Mihir Patel Gives Lake Residents an In-Town Alternative

By April Leaver (article and photo) Most residents would agree that the closing of Pathmark and then Fresh Imperium left a serious grocery void in Lake Hopatcong. The Jefferson Market is looking to fill that void with an addition to its current space and a variety of new offerings. Mihir Patel, aka Junior, has plans to include additional grocery items. “This will not compete with Shoprite, but residents will be able to come to us for lastminute groceries,” Patel said.

“This has always been my dream,” Patel told The Jefferson Chronicle. Patel worked at the Jefferson Market for thirteen years before purchasing the business, building, and adjacent lot in 2017.

The new L-shaped structure will utilize the vacant lot behind the current market. It will start about 30 feet from the road where the outer perimeter of the existing parking lot is now.

Patel plans on keeping the current market open during construction of the new building; however, the original 1700-sq. ft. building will eventually be demolished. Parking modifications are planned during the construction phase.

The new construction will include two floors and a partial basement and consist of approximately 4100 sq. ft. The top level will be used for storage, and the basement will consist of a garage. The site will include 17 parking spaces for customers, an additional four parking spaces in the back, and a few in the garage. Patel estimates that his current 11 door coolers will increase to about 30, as well as between six and eight door freezers. It will include limited fresh produce.

Patel believes that his current staff may slightly increase.

Aesthetically Pleasing Building

The planning board approved the site plan on September 10; however, changes to the façade are already in the works. The planning board requested that the building have architectural characteristics more in keeping with the neighborhood. Patel stated he is happy to make those aesthetic changes.

Because Espanong Road is a county road, county officials are currently conducting a traffic study. Construction of the new building is slated to begin in March 2020 and estimated to last three months.

Patel started working on this concept in May 2018 and is anxious to see the completed project. “I just want something to help our residents,” he said.

The Races Must Go On, and They Did Rainy Weather Couldn’t Dampen the Excitement for Boaters

By Ulla Vinkman (article and photos) The rains cleared just in time for the races to go on and culminate three days of activities of the 2019 Lake Hopatcong Grand Prix/OPA (Offshore Powerboat Association) Racing.

The event, postponed from September, started on Friday with a fun run and Halloween party, followed by Saturday’s meet and greet at the race village at the Lake Forest Yacht Club and ended with the races on Sunday, also at Lake Forest Yacht Club.

The Lake Hopatcong Grand Prix is OPA’s final race of the season. Racers come from all over the country to participate in 12 different race classes. Racers complete 43 laps of the 2.3 mile course that went from near Brady Bridge to Mason Street Pub and back. The autumn foliage provided a scenic backdrop as the boats raced on.

There were a total of 40 race boats including three local boats driven by the Muller family. The Mullers included Jay Muller (Grand Prix organizer) and sons Chase (18), Jax (16) and Jason (19). The Mullers’ Chugit and Wicked placed second and third in the Class 7 races.

A rocky started ended with a successful finish. Support at the yacht club was provided by Jefferson Township Police Department, the State Police, and Jefferson Township Rescue Squad.

For What It’s Worth Thanksgiving Disasters

By Tony Haryn Thanksgiving is the time we give thanks for family and friends, for fortune and good health – but what comes above all the rest is good food! Now sometimes, whether out of our control or of our own making, things can go wrong and ruin the day. We have heard of cooking the bird with the plastic giblets bag still in it, and then there are the deep-frying horror stories.

Right after I got married, we were invited to the home of my wife’s uncle and aunt for Thanksgiving. We were told that dinner would be served at 2:00, so we arrived an hour early for some small talk. The aromas of Thanksgiving filled the air, but I noticed one scent was missing … turkey. I asked her aunt how the turkey was going and she went to check, returning with a panicked look. In her rush to make all the side dishes, set the table, and be a good host, she forgot to turn on the oven! We ended up eating at around 7 p.m.

This next story is not for weak stomachs. My wife and I were invited to my friend’s home for Thanksgiving with his family. As we sat down to enjoy the meal, he took out the knife and started to carve the bird. The first cut was fine, but the second cut revealed a very large tumor about the size of a golf ball inside the bird. Everyone kind of walked away from the table, having lost their appetites. We ended up eating all the side dishes, but it was not my first meatless Thanksgiving.

I once went to a girlfriend’s home to have Thanksgiving with her family. The large dining room from the 1930s, with sliding doors on both sides, could hold 12 people comfortably. Her mother had set out a huge spread of food on her best china and crystal. It was a Norman Rockwell picture. Before we sat down, her mom had shut the sliding doors so we could get the full effect of the holiday meal, and then put the turkey on the table. As she opened up both doors, all of us let out a gasp. It seems mom had also locked my girlfriend’s white cat in the room. Whitey was spread eagle – or, in this case, turkey – on top of the bird, having his own Thanksgiving. We pulled the cat off the bird and he ran into the kitchen, where he happily cleaned himself for two hours. The turkey looked like it had a white beard and needed a shave. We proceeded to eat all the side dishes, and that was my first “meat free” Thanksgiving.

After these Thanksgiving disasters, I have cooked my own bird for the last 35 years with no mishaps. To all my readers, have a happy and filling Thanksgiving.

Jefferson Homecoming 2019: A Spirit-Filled Week of Fun Falcon Pride on High Display

The excitement of Homecoming Week began to truly ignite literally and figuratively on Thursday evening with the annual Bonfire held on the JV baseball field. While the lighting of the bonfire is considered the main event of the evening, the fun began when the doors opened and music was piped in from the press box along with a jousting pit and food trucks to fuel those in attendance, followed by the introduction of the Homecoming court for 2019.

The freshman, sophomore, and junior classes were represented by a Homecoming Prince and Princess, each of whom was introduced along with a fun fact by masters of ceremonies “KK” and Johnny.

Homecoming is as much a part of autumn as fall foliage, chillier weather, and ubiquitous pumpkin-spice flavored foods. It’s when high schools, colleges, and universities of all sizes across the country celebrate the memories of their alumni and the ongoing accomplishments of their current students in activities as classically American as any Norman Rockwell illustration.

Although the actual Homecoming at Jefferson Township High School was Friday, October 11, there were so many fun-filled, school-spirit raising events, that rather than try to compact them into one day, they were all combined into a series of events known as “Spirit Week 2019.” Part of the fun were days designated for different clothing, beginning on Monday with Pajama Day, followed by Cowboy Day on Tuesday. After a day off on Wednesday in observance of Yom Kippur, Thursday was a day to wear pink in honor of breast cancer awareness. The week culminated on Friday when students wore the school colors, blue and gold, to get everyone’s Falcon Pride to the next level in preparation for 8

The Senior Class had four candidates each for the ultimate honor of Homecoming King and Queen, which would be announced the following evening at halftime of the football game.

Matt Moran, who has broken his nose five different times, Richie Raymond, who once won a spitting contest, Matt Johnson, who was recently named “Mr. Jefferson” and can eat a Big Mac in one bite, and Collin Miller, who can solve a Rubik’s Cube.

With the anticipation building, the first announcement was that of Richie Raymond being named Homecoming King. The student section gave a thunderous ovation for Richie, who is one of the captains of the football team. The Homecoming Court was completed with the announcement of Queen Morgan Beaudoin, who was greeted with a similar round of applause for being such a positive, uplifting member of the Falcon community.

The Falcons did not come out on top in the game, with the final score being 28-22 in favor of Morris Hills. While the score of the football game may not have been the perfect ending to a wonderful week, history will show that Homecoming Week 2019 at JTHS was one that will be fondly remembered for many years to come.

Jefferson Tidbit #2 The Lake Hopatcong Commission (LHC) offers suggestions to property owners to help limit the amount of phosphorus that enters Lake Hopatcong because “a single pound of phosphorus can support over 1,100 pounds of algae.”

· The LHC suggests using a non-phosphorus and slow release nitrogen fertilizer graded 10-10-10 – 10% nitrogen, 10% phosphate, 10% potash – when caring for a lawn. · Keep grass clippings and leaves out of the lake. Recycle to your compost pile or place curbside in brown paper sacks for weekly collection on Wednesdays. Vegetative waste pickup in Jefferson continues through December 11. · Septic systems should be properly maintained and pumped regularly to reduce phosphorus from entering the lake. For detailed septic management information in Jefferson, visit http://jeffersontmweb. azurewebsites.net/#!/home · Boat holding tanks should be pumped out at pump-out stations located at marinas on Lake Hopatcong to eliminate pollution from waste, which degrades water quality. · Phosphorus fertilizers, detergents, and chemicals should be used in moderation as The LHC notes that stormwater runoff picks up pollutants as it flows over streets, grass, etc. and can eventually flow into the lake. · Leave a wide strip of deep-rooted native plants along the shoreline to prevent soil and nutrients from flowing into the lake. ·As harvested weeds are a source of substantial nutrients, they should be removed from the lake to prevent the growth of algae and plants.

Insights and Expertise: Living Your Best Life Ever Her Way or the Highway

“Please open your heart and adopt Odette. She’s a precious Yorkiepoo rescued from a puppy mill.” Her photo didn’t do her justice. She sat huddled in the back of a cage, her tortured life reflected in her body language. I posted and reposted, to no avail. I inquired at the shelter if there had been any interest in her. “No,” they explained, “dogs like her are hard to place. Having been severely abused, they’re terrified of humans. Few are willing to take a chance on them.” My heart ached. I’ve adopted abused dogs before, and with patience and TLC they make progress and become loving members of our family. But hers was an extreme case. With four adoptees already, could I handle another one, especially with such deeply rooted issues?

Her unkempt hair couldn’t hide the extent of the fear and distrust reflected in her big brown eyes. I signed the adoption papers and gave her a name of courage: Rocky. When placed in my arms, her body stiffened as she tried to pull away. “It’s okay, Rocky,” I whispered.

“You’re safe now.” But she wasn’t convinced. Once home, she found safety nestled among my other dogs. Whenever I approached, she cowered in fear. Even treats did not ease her anxiety.

On her terms, I reminded myself. The only way she’ll trust me is if I respect her apprehension and interact with her in ways she’s comfortable with. Techniques that proved successful with my other canines failed miserably with her. She made no attempt to know me. Still I persisted. I learned to approach her when she was near one of my other dogs. By focusing on them rather than her, she felt less threatened. Gradually, she began drawing near me, seeking to participate in the affection I lavished on them. Progress was slow, but in time, my patience and love built a foundation of trust and mutual affection.

We can all learn a valuable lesson from working with abused animals.

Developing a relationship with them entails putting their needs before our own, reaching out, and relating in a way that is comfortable for them. By conveying a message of sensitivity and concern for their well-being, they gradually lower their defenses and learn to trust us.

In our human encounters, we often take the opposite approach by disregarding any issues or pain the individual is struggling with.

“This is who I am and how I do things. Deal with it.” My way or the highway does not work with animals or with humans. Only when we relinquish ego (my way) and respond in compassion (God’s way) can we convey our loyalty and faithfulness, thereby establishing a balanced, mutually respectful relationship.

Rocky has made incredible progress. She is the most playful and affectionate of my fur babies, while epitomizing her moniker of courage and strength. This matted little fur ball has been transformed because we did it her way – not mine.

Bucco Remembered as a True Statesman Senator Honored at Public Memorial

By Jane Primerano (photo courtesy of NJ Senate) The auditorium at the County College of Morris student center had few empty chairs and even fewer dry eyes as the personal and political family of Sen. Anthony R. (Tony) Bucco (R-25) paid tribute to the beloved public servant. Bucco died in mid-September after battling throat cancer early in the year. A heart attack unexpectedly claimed his life on September 16. The family held a private funeral and scheduled the public memorial for Sunday, October 6.

Assemblyman Anthony M. Bucco, Tony’s son, served as master of ceremonies for the memorial. He introduced former Congressman Rodney Frelinghuysen (R-11) and current members of Congress Tom Malinowsky (D-7) and Mikie Sherrill (D-11) and other dignitaries.

Former Gov. Chris Christie sent a video tribute. He noted he had to be at Providence College for parents’ weekend for his son, Patrick, and that Bucco would have approved of him putting family first. The two ran against each other in the crowded primary to replace Frelinghuysen in the state Assembly, Christie noted. “He beat me pretty bad,” the former governor commented, noting Bucco told him if he hadn’t lost that race he would never have become governor. “He was a huge supporter of me as U. S. Attorney,” Christie said.

Bucco’s campaign slogan was always “When he’s in Trenton, you’re in Trenton” and Christie said that was always true.

Constituent services came first. As a senior member of the Senate budget committee during Christie’s first tough budget fight, the Governor said Bucco told him, “don’t ever make me do that again.” He told Anthony Bucco one of his father’s proudest moments was when the younger Bucco was sworn in to his old Assembly seat.

Senate President Steve Sweeney spoke movingly about his friend and occasional rival. “He was a throwback,” Sweeney said.

“When he gave you his word, you could take it to the bank.”

Forever Lake Hopatcong

“He drove me out of my mind about Lake Hopatcong,” Sweeney said, referring to Bucco’s famous devotion to the lake. “I told him, I’m almost in Delaware, what do I know about Lake Hopatcong?”

But he applauded Bucco for forming the Lake Hopatcong Commission. “He was the last great statesman and a great

person,” Sweeney said. “He had one hell of a life.” Sweeney noted Bucco was a very close personal friend. “It’s going to be almost impossible to replace him.”

State Senator Tom Kean Jr. (R-21) spoke of Bucco’s deep love for his community, his county, and his state. “He understood public service,” Kean said. “Some people call that old school. He believed in doing the right thing. Party didn’t matter.” “He was a man of deep faith,” Kean said. “As busy as he was, he started every day by going to Mass. He started every day as a humble servant of God.” Although Bucco was perhaps most known for his dedication to Lake Hopatcong, there were other things he cared deeply about, Kean said. He noted the Safe Haven Law, which allows mothers to bring newborns to firehouses with no repercussions. Bucco also cared about disability rights, education, and affordability.

Addressing Bucco’s family, his wife, Helen, son Anthony and his wife, Amy, and grandchildren Anthony III (Rocco) and wife, Josie; Lauren and her husband Brian Haggart, and Jenna, Kean said, “I hope your pain is eased by knowing how much he meant to all of us. It was a life well lived. He left nothing on the table.”

Michael DuHaime ran Bucco’s first Senate campaign. He noted his experience consisted of driving a Zamboni and delivering for his father’s beauty supply business. “I knew every beauty salon and barber shop in the district,” he said. “That race changed my life,” DuHaime said. He learned from Bucco’s example of knocking on doors. He spoke of fielding phone calls from Tony and Anthony Bucco, each complaining about what the other was doing wrong.

Sheriff James Gannon, who knew Bucco his entire life and went to school with Anthony, spoke about how the Senator remembered everyone’s name and made everyone feel important.

Son Eulogizes Father

Anthony Bucco read the eulogy he delivered at the family funeral service at the request of his mother. The Buccos were married for 60 years.“She gave him the freedom to soar,”the junior Bucco said.

He also spoke about his father’s devotion to the family, especially his grandchildren. Rocco, being the first born (and a boy), was a star, especially when he went into the family business. Then came Lauren, “the first little girl in the family. Everything went from blue to pink, but he knew you could take care of yourself.”

“Jenna,” he said to his youngest, “you were a handful, but he knew how to handle you and you were there for him at the end.”

“I am such a lucky son to have had him as long as I did,” he said.

“He loved Boonton, the drum corps, the fire department and police department, all the first responders.” Anthony Bucco said he was proud to serve with his father in the Statehouse, where he always called him Senator. “We cherished the joint sessions where we sat together for addresses.”

“It isn’t easy losing a father,” he said, “It’s even harder when he’s your best friend.”

During the closing prayer, Fr. Michael Drury, the chaplain for the U.S. Secret Service and the NJ State Police said, “The road to Heaven is made by making sure no one falls through the cracks.

He did that.”

Arts Committee to be placed in the Veterans’ Memorial.

Snapshots of History Jefferson’s Memorial Honors All Its Veterans

By Carol Punturieri (article and photos) The Bicentennial Veterans’ Memorial Park is a beautiful yet solemn site in the Jefferson Township Municipal Complex on Weldon Road serving as an everlasting tribute to all those individuals who have given their lives for their country. It also honors those who have survived the aftermath of conflicts and wars. The park’s theme is “Lest We Forget,” and five flags representing each of the Armed Forces fly at the site.

A plaque that was displayed on the property of the original Lake Hopatcong shopping center on Route 15 by the Lake Hopatcong Businessmen’s Association was one of the first plaques installed at the Veterans’ Memorial site. Joseph May notified the committee that he had obtained the plaque and kept it safe until the memorial was built.

On November 12, 1987, Mayor Frances Slayton dedicated the Jefferson Township Veterans’ Memorial at the Veterans’ Day Observance. Kelly recalls that this “first observance was so cold that the pulleys on the flag poles froze. The flags could not be taken down until the weather had warmed up the next day.”

Picatinny Arsenal offered Mayor Slayton a de-militarized 105mm Howitzer gun for the memorial. She accepted the offer and the township’s Department of Public Works picked it up and placed it under the Liberty Tree between the stones. Marine Corps veteran, VFW Commander, and 423 Legionnaire Fred Eastman utilized his skills as a machinist to make a muzzle plug which was permanently installed on the Howitzer.

The Veterans Memorial in Jefferson’s Bicentennial Veterans Memorial Park is a place of peace and reflection.

In 1976, Jefferson obtained a Liberty Tree, commemorating the bicentennial of the Declaration of Independence from the Morris County Park Commission. The committee planted the tree on municipal grounds on Arbor Day ’76.

In 1986, the town formed the Veterans Memorial Park Committee to discuss building a veterans’ memorial adjacent to the Liberty Tree. Veterans from American Legion Posts 423 and 245, VFW Post 564, and other interested individuals set the wheels in motion. Resident, Post 423 Legionnaire, and Navy veteran Jack Kelly coordinated the efforts of committee members Jay Dunham, Albert Ginolfi Sr., Brooke Hardy, Joseph May, Ray Polakoski, Fred Eastman, Tony Gross, Buddy Hanson, Rose Kelly, Frances Slayton, Michael Wickham, and Paul Mikowski.

Simple Design

The design was simple, with the placement of two large stones from the Morris County Park Commission’s Mahlon Dickerson Reservation on either side of the Liberty Tree, each set in a gravel bed. Jefferson’s Department of Public Works transported the stones to the site. Bill Trudeau, Jr. of Headley Lumber donated the wooden framework for the beds, and Wayne Ackerson donated the gravel. Bill Trudeau, Sr. made flag poles for the Liberty Days in Jefferson Township celebration in 1976 (the township celebration that later became Jefferson Township Day), which were donated by the Jefferson 18

Arthur “Bud” Hanson, a VFW Post 564 commander, approached Jack Kelly in 2004 to add benches and private areas for reflection at the site, while college student Michael Wickham suggested a wall of honor and the addition of more trees. Now chairing The Bicentennial Committee, Kelly set up a meeting to consider these and other ideas to develop a park concept. The committee decided to improve the memorial on the existing site, and Bill Rolstad of Bill’s Scenic Landscaping in Lake Hopatcong received the contract for the new design and construction.

The Silentia Masonic Lodge in Butler, NJ stored a plaque that was over 100 years old displaying the names of those who served in World War I. Jim Sisco, a former American Legion Post 423 commander, was in possession of the plaque; it was mounted on the stone that stands to the right of the Howitzer gun.

A Bicentennial Tree donated by the Jack Kelly family was planted in the spring of 2004 to the rear of the wall in commemoration of the township’s 200th anniversary.

Through the generosity of many private donations, a meditation area was constructed with trees and seating areas surrounding a beautiful brick inlay of the American Flag.

To raise funds, the Jefferson Township Bicentennial Committee offered (and still offers*) for sale 6”x9” engraved paver bricks to memorialize a veteran or family member, commemorate a birthday or anniversary, etc. The program is still administered by Fran Slayton. A combination of engraved and non-engraved paver bricks creates a beautiful walkway to the memorial.

The refurbished Hurdtown Schoolhouse bell (circa 1800s) is the centerpiece of the memorial, representing the call to duty.

It sits on the top of the wall dedicated to all those Jefferson Township residents who served their country. The historic bell is complimented by a bronze commemorative plaque, as well as the symbolic emblems of the township’s two American Legions and Veterans of Foreign Wars organizations.

On June 6, 2004, Richard Yocum, Township Council president at the time, re-dedicated the new memorial on the 60th anniversary of D-Day. The site was renamed the Bicentennial Memorial/Veterans Park.

A bicentennial project was to create a time capsule to preserve a sample of what life was like in the township at the start of the 21st century. Some 75 items reflecting popular culture, news events, and information about the township and its people were collected. Mayor Slayton obtained an American flag that had flown over the State Capitol, and the Wroblewski family added personal items to remember their son Marine Second Lt. John T. Wroblewski, who died in Iraq in 2004. The Jefferson Township Public Library paid for the preservation of the materials and the stainless-steel container. It was enclosed in a concrete case and buried in the back of the memorial’s wall and dedicated at the Veterans’ Day Observance on November 13, 2004. It is to be opened during the week of April 9, 2054 – the township’s 250th anniversary.

Profile Matt Van Wolput Gives Back to Community Sensei, Owner of Oak Ridge Martial Arts Academy ‘Creates Space’ for Students of Martial Arts

By Jim Dougherty (photos by Christopher Bean) Residents of the Oak Ridge area of Jefferson Township are likely aware of the Oak Ridge Martial Arts Academy (ORMAA). Maybe you remember the giant inflatable student kicking the sign along Berkshire Valley Road (he has since relocated). Those who know of the school but do not know Matt Van Wolput, the owner and sensei (lead instructor), have yet to meet a man who is both a product of and integral to the fabric of our community.

Hopatcong. There he began a course of study under senseis Scott and Fred Carrell as well as Mike Pace, who remains his instructor to this day. Those were the first steps on a path of discipline, discovery, risk, and growth inside – and, more importantly, outside – of the dojo (learning hall or, literally, “place of the way”).

The youngest of three, Van Wolput was raised as a latchkey kid in a single-parent home.

He graduated from Jefferson Township High School in 1995 and worked at odd jobs: NAPA Sensei Matt, with a close friend, back Auto Parts, Crossroads when he first started the dojo.

Deli, and eventually a metal fabrication shop. When he was about 19, an older colleague put an idea in his head by saying, “Find a way to work for yourself.” Already a student of Goju Ryu karate, Van Wolput understood the concept of a sensei as one who has gone before or one further on the path. The thought of selfemployment fired the young man’s imagination, and he soon began painting houses on weekends. He was good at it, knew well that office work was not for him, and painted for the next few years while nurturing the goal to work for himself. When the father of a woman he was dating stepped in to help him learn the ropes of money, finance, and loans, it was just the guidance he needed to open his own business.

Van Wolput grew up in the Cozy Lake section of town. He managed to get in less trouble than he might have deserved, but doesn’t describe himself as a bad kid. In fact, knowing him even a little, one can hardly imagine Van Wolput using the phrase “bad kid.” Jefferson had fewer recreational opportunities 35 years ago than it does today, but Van Wolput found joy in one particular activity: dirt bikes—specifically motocross.

While on what (he assumed) was a promising future in that sport, a brutal crash left him hospitalized for 14 days. Though he had crashed before, this time was different. Climbing back on two wheels, he realized he no longer had the confidence to race like he was bulletproof. His days on the track ended.

Van Wolput’s mother, knowing that a teen with his energy and intensity could easily come to trouble without an organized outlet to channel himself, was thrilled that he found a new passion – that is, until she learned he would be studying karate.

But not to stand in his way, she began taking him to classes at the All Okinawan Karate Institute on Route 15 in Lake 20

Van Wolput built a successful business as a painter contractor.

He worked mainly in the immediate area through referrals from friends and neighbors in town. He was successful, but not entirely fulfilled. His wife, Katherine (whom Van Wolput beamingly praises whenever her name comes up), never stopped reminding him of his dream to open a karate studio. When his opportunity became evident, he took the plunge. Putting his painting company on the line to secure a loan from the local Lakeland Bank, he opened his dojo on Berkshire Valley Road near the Gulf station. Six months later he expanded Oak Ridge Martial Arts Academy, and soon expanded again. As Van Wolput recalls, they did not really have the students to justify such a risk, but the community responded. Many of his former painting clients were thrilled to send their children to find their own outlet, discipline, structure, and confidence.

By creating a space for people of all ages, Van Wolput had truly become sensei; he had opened the path so others could follow.

Today that path is broad and available to many. ORMAA works with children as young as four and has classes for youth, teens, and adults. Katherine runs women’s cardio fitness. They have developed an adaptive martial arts program for students from the Department for Persons with Disabilities, Rebecca’s Homestead (Rebecca Elmers), and West Milford High School.

Goju Ryu means the hard/soft way. The idea is that sometimes one must breathe in and be soft, receptive, flexible, and patient.

Other times, it is correct to be hard, exhale, project strength from a solid foundation, and persevere. Sometimes you ride the dirt bike, and sometimes you find your path by falling off.

Students are placed in groups and rotate through stations to receive more individualized hands-on training.

Van Wolput teaches his students to be receptive while in the dojo. That is where they learn and practice, where they are safe to explore their strengths and weaknesses. He encourages them to take their lessons and practice outside by serving the community in the Brown and Black Belt Project, being honorable and reliable, fulfilling their responsibilities, and taking on new challenges. He teaches them the importance of setting goals and the value of being open to change.

Community

When asked about the future of Jefferson, Van Wolput becomes quiet. He says he’d like to see kids running around outside, like the three children he and Kat raised here in town.

Ironically, the sensei of discipline, respect, structure, and hard work believes that our community and society are becoming too rigid. Any student of Goju Ryu knows that in order to breathe in, one must breathe out…that to have strength, one must also be flexible…that to have a sense of self, one must have a sense of connection.

Van Wolput’s path has led him squarely into the heart of our community. Sometimes he forged ahead, sometimes he was led, and sometimes he was pushed (he’d thank his wife for that). Each of us has a path, and each of us has the opportunity to turn back and guide others; each of us is student and sensei if we are willing, and that is what makes a community.

Trying to sum up his path as a directionless young person navigating pitfalls and dead ends, Van Wolput becomes somber. His eyes glisten as he recalls the moments, some overt and some subtle, when Jefferson Township was there for him and his mother. Today he is grateful for the many unseen hands that helped carry him forward. “To look back and see that ... if I didn’t have community pulling for me, I would have gone in a completely different direction. That’s why I want to give back today.”

In Brief Incumbents Retain BOE Seats in Jefferson; Republicans Take County Seats

By Sue Toth After Election Day victories, Matthew Millar, Adele Wildermuth, and Michael Stewart will retain their seats on the Jefferson Township Board of Education.

In Morris County, Republican James Gannon retained his seat as County Sheriff, while Republican Heather Darling won her bid for county surrogate. The Republican trio of Douglas Cabana, Thomas Mastrangelo, and Kathy DeFillippo won the race for Board of Chosen Freeholders.

The Morris Canal, two steamboat lines, and the Morris County Traction Company trolley also converged at the heavily visited site, according to Lake Hopatcong Historical Museum President Marty Kane.

Extensive renovations were funded by the Morris County Historic Preservation Trust Fund and the Preserve New Jersey Historic Preservation Fund, as well as through other grants and private donations.

The Lake Hopatcong Foundation now uses the building for its offices, as well as for its Educational and Cultural Center, which is being used to accommodate community meetings, activities, and programs.

In New Jersey’s 26th Legislative District, which includes Jefferson Township, Republicans Jay Webber and BettyLou DeCroce won out over their Democratic challengers Christine Clarke and Laura Fortgang.

Holiday Trains Rolling into Jefferson Holiday trains will be chugging through Jefferson as the Recreation Department welcomes the BD&W Club of Jefferson, the Northern NJ N-Trak Club, and the Pocono Mountain Garden Railway Society to Camp Jefferson, 81 Weldon Road in Lake Hopatcong on Saturday, December 14 and Sunday, December 15 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.

The BD&W Club will be running their HO scale trains in their Camp Jefferson Train Cabin, the Northern NJ N-Trak Club will be located in the Recreation Hall running their N-scale trains, and The Pocono Mountain Garden Railway Society will be running their G-scale trains in the Community Lodge.

The Lake Hopatcong Station in Roxbury Township received a historic marker that recognizes its historical significance on October 28.
