Here’s the thing…we at The Chronicle are going through some transitions. We’re changing and growing, which will lead to some very positive things that we’ll be sharing over the next several weeks. And another good thing is that the January/February issue can be read on our website.

TOWN TO TAKE OVER JEFFERSON FEST

I

n the absence of a local group stepping up to take over Jefferson Township Day, the township will take it over for 2020, Mayor Eric Wilsusen said.

The summer festival was run for 30 years by the Jefferson Arts Committee. It was modified three years ago, Wilsusen said, when the arts committee told the township administration it was getting difficult to run all of the aspects of the extensive festival, including a parade. The festival was cut back to food trucks and entertainment, culminating with fireworks after dark.

POLICE: MAKE YOUR HOUSE NUMBER VISIBLE

T

he Jefferson Township Police department asks residents to ensure that their house number is prominently displayed on the front of every residence. This helps emergency services to quickly locate homes in the event of an emergency.

In several recent instances, township emergency services had to waste time searching for homes that were not marked. The department additionally requests that should emergency services be requested, residents unlock the front door and leave outside lights on at night.

The Jefferson Township Fire Prevention Bureau enforces this same numbering procedure during the home resale or rental inspection based upon a township ordinance According to fire officials, the number on the mailbox is not acceptable, as the mailbox is postal property and the postal service regulates what can go on and in the mail box. Also, not all mailboxes are not always on the same side of the street as the home or in front of the home.

IT’S NOT A WONDERFUL DAY IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD

ecently I found out that one of my neighbors was raised in my hometown, so I took a walk over to introduce myself. As I was leaving after a pleasant 20-minute conversation, I said to her, “If you ever need anything, just knock on my door.” She looked surprised and responded, “You know, I have lived here six years, and not one of my neighbors has ever said that to me.”

I can agree with her: Neighborhoods aren’t the same as the ones I grew up in. They were like extended families. We all watched out for one another. Going outside to play, I knew I was safe. My neighbors came from diverse economic backgrounds and faiths, yet I could call on any one of them if I needed something. People sat on their front porches or stoops and kept an eye out for their neighbors, and lifelong friendships were created. We all got along.

Today, many people seem to have no consideration for their neighbors. They are self-absorbed and envious of what others have, and some go as far as making up stories about their neighbors. Today I am happy if someone waves at me, and I consider this person a good neighbor.

When Hurricane Sandy hit us a few years ago, we were among the lucky ones to have a generator. I threw an extension cord over the fence so my neighbors could keep the refrigerator on. In the winter, I used my snow blower on their driveway.

When they were on vacation, I cut their front lawn a few times. But when I had hip replacement surgery and could not push a lawn mower or shovel snow, my neighbors were nowhere to be found – my wife did it all. My churchgoing wife called me every name in the book, and some not written yet, and swore that if she caught me doing anything for those neighbors again, she would cut off certain parts of my body.

In my childhood, we all looked out for each other, and especially for the little kids. If children were headed for trouble or about to get hurt, we would give a holler and threaten to tell their parents – and they would stop.

Recently, I saw a boy up the street throwing rocks at passing cars. I hollered to him to stop or I would tell his parents.

He told me to mind my own business, old man, and his parents would not do anything to him anyway. The next day, I had a five-foot scratch on my car and a rock placed on my driveway.

Yes, neighbors and neighborhoods have changed – and not for the better. We all go back into our caves with no concern for what happens outside. The people who are good enough to try to be neighborly are subject to all kinds of persecution. I agree with my hometown friend down the block. But since we come from the same old neighborhood, she can count on me … and just knock on the door any time.

FIRE COMPANY 1 CELEBRATES NEW OFFICERS

nowy weather didn’t stop Jefferson Township Fire Department Company #1 from celebrating at its annual Installation Dinner from taking place. Casa Bianca’s banquet hall was filled with family, friends, and visiting guests to honor and celebrate the new officers of Company 1 as well as recognize members of the Company.

The festive evening started with outgoing Chief Vinny Corsaro introducing new Chief Raymond Cabrera, Sr. and the new Chief thanking the outgoing Chief for his service. The program moved along quickly and included the swearing-in of the new Line Officers by Mayor Eric Wilsusen, as well as recognition of milestones in the Department – including Lynne Valenza receiving her Lifetime Membership to the Relief Association and Gerry Brown’s 40 years of service. Mayor Wilsusen read a Proclamation to recognize Gerry Brown’s service.

Other notable moments of the evening were the presentation of the new Administrative officers. The Ladies Auxiliary presented their gift of having the truck numbers to be painted on the newly painted firehouse and the recognition of Connor Kraljevich’s service with the Marines and his recent return from Afghanistan.

FIRE COMPANY 2 INSTALLS NEW OFFICERS

efferson Township’s Fire Company #2 held its 67th annual installation of new line officers at Casa Bianca in Oak Ridge on Saturday, February 1. The elegant semi-formal affair also featured service awards for company members.

Travis Luecht, master of ceremonies, started the program with the Pledge of Allegiance and a remembrance of deceased members. Mayor Eric Wilsusen had the honor of swearing in the new line officers for 2020: chief Lou Loiacono, assistant chief Tom Jardines, second lieutenant Scott Jenkins, and engineer Barry Brown.

Administrative officers were introduced and special recognition was given to past chiefs, life members, visiting chiefs, and guests. The Ladies Auxiliary presented a gift of $2,500.

PARENT-TEACHER ASSOCIATIONS

T

here are four parent-teacher associations active in the Jefferson Township school district, each dedicated to promoting the welfare of children and youth, not only in their schools but in the home and community. They plan programs and activities to help meet the needs of the school children physically, mentally, socially, and spiritually, while working hard to secure adequate laws to care for and protect students.

The National PTA defines parent-teacher associations as “the oldest and largest child advocacy associations in America.“ Today more than four million parents, teachers, grandparents, caregivers, foster parents, and other caring adults across the United States share a commitment to improve the education, health, and safety of all children. They speak with one voice for every child.

The Jefferson Township Middle School PTA supports the students and staff through projects and fundraisers, including co-sponsoring the annual carnival with the Jefferson Township Parent-Teacher-Student Association ( JTPTSA). PROJECT LIFESAVER

M

any families today care for young and older family members who have dementia, Alzheimer’s, autism, Down Syndrome, and traumatic brain injuries and worry about them wandering off and becoming disoriented. To assist families in these situations, the Morris County Sheriff ’s Office has developed the Project Lifesaver program, which uses advanced tracking technology to assist in locating persons who may wander off from their caregiver’s supervision.

A tracking band could cost hundreds of dollars and incur a monthly maintenance fee. However, through funding from the Older American’s Act and private donations, Sheriff James M. Gannon’s office offers its Project Lifesaver program free of charge. The unit utilizes a one-ounce battery-operated transmitter programmed with a unique frequency. It is worn on the wrist or ankle of an individual and transmits a tracking signal every second, seven days a week, 24 hours a day. If a person is reported as missing and is wearing the transmitter, a tracking unit receiver will be activated by law enforcement to locate and rescue the individual much more quickly than conventional search and rescue procedures.

The participant’s legal primary family member, caregiver, or authorized representative can complete an application online by visiting www.sheriff.morriscountynj.gov or call 973-285-6681 to request an application to be mailed. The participant must reside in Morris County with a primary caregiver and provide a physician-confirmed diagnosis. Once an application is approved, the Sheriff ’s Office will arrange for a home visit to install the bracelet, provide training as to how the program operates, and develop a routine maintenance schedule.

In the event of a missing person, a designated Project Lifesaver emergency phone call must be made immediately to activate a global tracking device and begin search procedures. On average, the missing person can be found in 30 minutes or less.

ICY WATERS DON’T STOP THOSE WHO WANT TO HELP

L

eapers and spectators didn’t let the 34-degree temperatures stop them from gathering on the shores of the Lake Hopatcong State Park for the eleventh annual Leap in the Lake.

Local businesses sponsored many of the teams who have been raising funds all year.

The money goes to support area special needs children. The Elks use the funds to send children to camp; hold special events such as back-to-school bonfires with backpacks full of supplies for the children, sensory-friendly breakfast with Santa, Trunk or Treat, Easter and Christmas parties; and provide equipment such as tablets, wheelchairs, and lifts, all with the mission of bringing joy to the children and comfort to the parents.

Organized by the Lake Hopatcong Elks #782 and committee Chairman Rick Gathen, the Leap in the Lake features brave swimmers leaping—literally—into Lake Hopatcong to raise money for various charities.

It succeeds at the hands of approximately 60 volunteers and has raised close to a $600,000 to date.

There was excitement in the air when it was announced that this year’s fundraising efforts exceeded expectations and hit the $60,000 mark.

Four hundred leapers took the plunge at this year’s event, many in team uniforms or costumes.

Leapers and spectators were invited to thaw out at the Post Leap Party at the Lake Hopatcong Elks #782 lodge featuring food, music, raffles, and giveaways.

COMMUNITY COMES TOGETHER TO HELP SAVE SCHOOL FROM BUDGET WOES

J

efferson Township High School faculty, students, and parents took to the high school on Tuesday night in a united effort to save their school from further aid slashes caused by S-2.

JTHS is one of many schools affected by the bill’s cutdown on state funding. Thus, the school community, united by the guidance of the PTA, came together to address letters to officials seeking a stop and review of the funding reform bill.

“We’re very fortunate to have such a supportive community,” assistant Superintendent Roger Jinks said of the attendance.

“We’re doing everything we can to make sure our students aren’t impacted.”

Letters were addressed to both local and state officials, including Governor Phil Murphy. Another addressee, Senator Joseph Pennacchio, was in attendance and was visibly impressed by the turnout. So high was the audience in JTHS’ cafeteria that the event was briefly delayed when more copies of the letters had to be made to accommodate the arriving support.

Also turning out for the event were Jefferson’s Mayor Eric Wilsusen, Business Administrator Debra Millikin, and councilwomen Melissa Senatore and Kim Finnegan.

Senator Pennacchio, the Republican representative of New Jersey’s 26th Legislative District, was visibly pleased at the turnout and that Tuesday’s display would start a conversation.

“I’m impressed...and concerned,” said Pennacchio, who mentioned he is engaged in dealing with a similar crisis in West Milford. “There are further ways to help, moving forward.

“This is something that we have to go to Trenton with. I’ll speak to the powers that be and see that we can get this rectified,” he added.

The Save Our Schools letter writing campaign had a very high turnout

Introduced by state Senate President Steve Sweeney, S-2 was passed in summer 2018. The process calculates a difference between the school district’s total state aid allocation in the current budget year and the pre-budget year. Districts with a positive differential are labeled “overfunded” and receive reduced state funding. Sweeney was among those addressed letters during Tuesday’s proceedings.

The Jefferson Township Board of Education meeting on February 17 spotlighted the effect S-2’s cutdowns have had on the area. In a presentation hosted by superintendent Jeanne Howe, Jefferson’s cumulative losses in state aid could exceed $38 million by the 2024-25 school year. Visible losses in the school community include the elimination of instructional and support positions and the removal or outright cancellation of facility renovations.

“These are things we don’t want to lose: our sense of community, our sense of pride for being Jefferson Falcons,” PTA President Jen Schorr said. “We’re super excited that this many people turned out. Everyone took it very seriously. We’re super excited that the senator came out, that he understands how important it is to everyone in Jefferson.”

Howe was sure to put the crisis at bay in specific terms.

“The biggest problem with S-2 is the devastating, longterm effects it’s going to have on our school system and our community,” Howe said. “We’re losing $9.8 million. Those cuts are going to be devastating to our school district. I can’t say that enough. When you look at what $9.8 million is, it is catastrophic.”

However, she, along with the rest of the board members in attendance, including Jinks and School Business Administrator Rita Giacchi, were inspired by the attendance and the community’s response. One of the most inspiring aspects, several attendees noted, was the involvement of young

people. JTHS high school students were on hand and even had a partial hand in writing the letters. Parents brought their young children with them as well, providing an early civics lesson. Troha mentioned that recent alumni also returned to help the cause.

“It is fantastic to see that our youth is here this evening,” Howe said. “It teaches them our foundations of government, that if you speak up, hopefully you can make a difference.

It empowers them. This is their future of education here in Jefferson.”

Members of the board emphasized, however, that while the letters have been sealed and addressed, there is still plenty of

work to be done. The plan is to start things off in Oak Ridge, but elevate the battle all the way to Trenton.

“We’re going to continue to write legislators, keep informing them of what’s going on,” Howe said of the future. “We’re going to keep requesting meetings with all members and all branches of government to let them know what we’re facing in Jefferson.

“Write letters. (The public can) let the legislators know that they’re displeased with their role in S-2, that these cuts are catastrophic, that they’re going to hurt our schools and our community. It’s a way to get involved and let people know how displeased they are,” Howe said.

WHO IS JTCONNECT?

J

efferson Township Connect, or JTConnect, is an organization that is dedicated to ending the stigma surrounding mental illness and making a positive impact on the community. They work to raise awareness through education and provide support and resources to those in need.

2009 was a difficult year for the Jefferson community after losing several residents to suicide and others attempting to take their lives. Coming together to grieve these losses, the community agreed that something needed to change. A group of individuals stepped up and committed their time to tackle these difficult issues to help save lives. Originally named the “Jefferson Township Mental Health Project,” the group was rebranded in 2012 to “JTConnect,” representing the need to connect the community and individuals who need help.

JTConnect is a non-profit organization under the umbrella of the Jefferson Township Municipal Alliance Committee (“JTMAC”), who originally provided JTConnect with “seed money” to get the group started. JTConnect relies on donations to offer programs to the community. Two large donations, since inception, have allowed them to continue to do this. In 2014, with the help of the Junior Women’s Club, JTConnect was the recipient of the proceeds from the Annual 5K Wrobo Run. In 2017, after losing their son to suicide, Jefferson residents Jeff and Susan Breitz hosted “An Evening of Hope” at the high school in his memory. The funds raised at this event were donated to JTConnect so that they would be able to continue to offer programs in the community to reach those in need of help.

JTConnect has been a pioneer in the stigma free initiative and was one of the first towns in Morris County to be designated as stigma free. In 2015, JTConnect reached out to The Codey

Fund for Mental Health to ask about obtaining stigma free signs for Jefferson Township. Former Governor Codey traveled to Jefferson to present the signs, which are now displayed at two of the town entrances and at the municipal building.

Members of JTConnect also attended initial meetings with the Morris County Stigma Free Coalition as they were establishing a task force. The Morris County Board of Freeholders passed a resolution on April 27, 2016, designating Morris County as a stigma free county. In the last several years, other towns have looked to JTConnect for guidance to help them become stigma free and partner with them on different programs.

The continued rise in suicide rates solidifies the need for all communities to be able to provide programs and resources to residents in need. According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (“AFSP”), in 2018, 48,344 Americans died by suicide and an estimated 1.4 million attempts were made. Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States, the 2nd leading cause of death for youth and young adults ages 10-34 and the second leading cause of death among college students.

JTConnect will remain dedicated to saving lives by bringing hope and support to those affected by suicide.

RINGLING MANOR: BEGINNING ANOTHER CENTURY OF HISTORY IN JEFFERSON

THE CIRCUS IS LONG GONE BUT, RINGLING’S MANSION STILL HAS STRONG TIES TO JEFFERSON, THE TOWN’S STORIED PAST, AND HOPEFULLY ITS FUTURE

T

here was just no getting through the mud that day. Horses strained at their bits, as wagon wheels dug deeper into muck on the township’s Longwood Lake Road.

The carriages loaded with animals and performance equipment were headed to neighboring Dover, where the R.T. Ringling Circus was expected. The carts had left stone buildings on Longwood Valley Road without mishap but were stalled on roads muddied by an earlier downpour.

But thanks to local farmers who hitched their tractors to the wagons, the circus made it to the neighboring town. There would be no disappointed children in Dover on that one particular evening back in the early 20th Century.

While the township’s camping ground for a circus run by Ringling family members is long gone, its memory lingers a century later in the native stone buildings that dot the area around Lake Swannanoa on Berkshire Valley Road.

There’s the building where lions and tigers were kept, that is now an artist’s studio.

Jefferson Medical and Imaging occupies another, while a tall stone water tower sits empty nearby. Another building, once housing a generator, faces one of the lake’s two dams.

HIDDEN TREASURE But burrowed among trees and shrubs, sheltered far from the asphalt thoroughfare now known as Berkshire Valley Road, lay the crown jewel of the township’s Ringling family legacy. It is the Ringling Manor, Jefferson Township’s hidden treasure. The columned, native stone building still stands as testament to a chapter in the town’s rich historic past, its existence still a relative mystery to many.

The extravagant three-story estate was conceived

by Alfred Ringling, one of the family’s five sons who comprised The Ringling Brothers Circus.

The widely traveled ‘Alf,’ as he was known, is said to have visited the area declaring it was “the most beautiful spot” he had “ever seen” and purchased some 100 acres. The number of acres, which included what is now Lake Swannanoa, eventually grew to 550 acres of ownership.

Captivated by the area, but caught without his usual sketchbook, Ringling himself reportedly drew rough diagrams on a shoebox of the ‘mansion’ he envisioned.

Back in 1913 though, when Alfred Ringling first set eyes on his “most beautiful spot,” what is now the Oak Ridge section of Jefferson was known as Petersburg and Swannanoa was not a lake at all; it was Petersburg Pond.

SHOEBOX TO MANSION By 1914, construction of the manor was well underway with residents Joseph or Edward Headley of Headley Lumber managing the venture. The project, which would take until 1916 to complete, was a boon for Petersburg’s labor force.

Original documents provided to The Jefferson Chronicle Digest by the township’s historical society include the names of local men – listing their trades, crafts and professions – who worked on the mansion’s construction. Laborers were paid $1.25 per day; craftsmen, $2.50 for each nine hours worked.

As recalled in a 1989 report by local resident Wilbur Fredericks, many farmers brought cobble stones to the mansion work site in wagons drawn by horses and oxen.

“They were paid by the number of stones they delivered,” he told a meeting of the Jefferson Township Historical Society.

The mansion itself was reinforced by 2-ft-thick concrete, ensuring it was fireproof.

When completed, the Ringling country home lived up to Alf Ringling’s vision: it was a mansion. Upon entering the palatial estate, guests were struck, no doubt – as were we – by the huge walnut and ebony fireplace mantle that graced the front room. Guests included members of “high society,” were “wellheeled,” and included many from all genres of arts and entertainment.

In addition to the parlor, the first floor consisted of a dining room, bathroom, organ room with terrace, billiard room and solarium, kitchen, dish and service pantry, check room and conservatory.

The second floor was comprised of eight bedrooms, six bathrooms, separate women’s and men’s lounges, card rooms and sun decks. On the third floor, there were even more card rooms, a sun deck and a ballroom. It was reportedly in the ballroom where Ringling exhibited circus acts, such as trapeze artists.

Unfortunately, Alfred Ringling died suddenly in 1919, not living long enough to fully enjoy his country get-away.

While the manor has gone through several iterations in over a century, it still occupies a prime location in the township, a native stone’s throw away from the Lake Swannanoa shoreline.

A CENTURY OF CHANGE At the close of the Roaring Twenties era, the manor was the site of a “swanky” night club complete with a speakeasy in the basement, Christine Williams, president of the Jefferson Township Historical Society tells The Chronicle.

An ambitious plan to turn the mansion and surrounding land into the elite Lake Swannanoa Golf Club and Country Club Estates – complete with restricted membership and an air strip – came to a resounding crash, literally, at the start of the Great Depression. For a time, the manor housed the American Institute of Science.

While the manor itself remained vacant, or changed hands, the acreage around it was sold off by the Ringling Estate in lots for development of houses around the lake. But after some 15 years of vacancy, the mansion would again capture a chapter in the township’s vibrant history.

Purchased by the Spes Foundation in 1955, The New York Times reported Ringling Manor would become “the nerve center of a Roman Catholic organization … to aid Roman Catholic churches and religionists in Poland and other Iron Curtain countries.”

After the war, the manor became a refuge for Polish Capuchins who survived Nazi concentration camps. The manor hummed with activity, serving as a publishing house for anti-Communist books and material, a center for monitoring activity behind the Iron Curtain, and compiling reports. The manor’s basement is still awash with the accoutrements of a radio-monitoring station and includes other remnants of Cold War era trappings.

In the late ‘60s Ringling Manor was purchased by the Province of Warsaw Capuchin Order and became the Saint Stanislaus Friary.

WHO WILL WRITE THE NEW CHAPTER? Today, the friary has had but a solitary resident, the Rev. Deacon Jerzy P. Krzyskow, or just George as he prefers to be called. He’s lived alone in the manor for 14 years.

During an afternoon visit to the friary, “brother” George – as some in the township refer to him – discussed over several cups of coffee, the manor’s storied past and gave The Chronicle a complete tour of the manor.

Lake Swannanoa resident Ben Jackson, who knows the manor inside out, was along for the tour and pointed out structural details, including a tunnel in the basement that once led directly to the lake.

As we toured, Deacon George lamented the changes made to the manor’s interior during refurbishing. It was 18

redecorated in mid-20th Century style, losing some of its original charm.

Wood paneling now covers walls and partitions separate some areas. He also noted many stained-glass windows were removed and replaced with clear glass, while artifacts were removed as well.

Nevertheless, the mansion has “good bones” – to use a ubiquitous 21st Century term – and Deacon George, to whom the manor has been entrusted, has hopes for its purpose in the future. And it is largely up to him what that purpose will be.

A few years ago, the manor was put up for sale with an $800,000 price tag. There were no offers, however, likely because of the estimated cost to bring the structure up to code.

Over the years, there has been local interest in the building.

Former resident and 1980 Jefferson Township High School graduate Scott McArthur set up a Facebook page to stir up curiosity about the manor. He says he once had financial backing to buy it, but the deal fell through.

At this point, the township’s historical society maintains the most interest. The group’s Williams believes the manor would make an ideal community center; an idea she tells The Chronicle she discussed with township mayor Eric Wilsusen.

The mayor says he likes the idea and would be supportive. He is adamant, however, Jefferson is in no financial position to buy and renovate the township’s historic manor, which was awarded National Historical Monument Status in 1977. Residents would likely agree.

Both Williams and the society’s secretary Mary Parr hope for a community effort behind a vision to secure the manor for a township purpose. Parr suggests that the manor’s many rooms can make ideal meeting spaces for the multitude of township organizations.

“The manor has an illustrious past,” says Williams, adding it now stands “like a ghost. Why does no one want this?” she asks rhetorically.

Recently, two young Capuchins from the Warsaw Province were to meet with Deacon George to tour the manor and convey its status back to the province.

The Deacon is hopeful someone with a realistic vision – along with the drive, energy and necessary funds, of course – will come along. “Someone with a vision could really do wonders with this place,” he says, glancing around. “I will listen to anyone with a real vision,” he adds.

In the meantime, the next chapter of the township’s storied Ringling Manor waits to be written.

THE WORST OF TIMES IS THE BEST

T

he Most Blessed Sacrament Church in Franklin Lakes was recently destroyed by fire after a 26-year-old man poured gasoline throughout the interior and set it ablaze. By the time firefighters arrived, the church was gone. My mom worked at for MBS for 35 years.

One day prior, a mass shooting had occurred at a kosher grocery store located less than an hour away in Jersey City. Five people were killed, including both of the attackers and three victims. Two police officers and a civilian were wounded. Considered an anti-Semitic hate crime, it left an entire community reeling in shock. My dad and uncle worked in this locality for more than 40 years. Two senseless tragedies in familiar neighborhoods in the same number of days … it’s been a very emotional time for me.

Our world is filled with anger and hatred – people speaking unkindly toward or about one another; others passing judgment on those with whom they disagree; individuals seeking revenge on persons who have wronged them; still others committing unspeakable acts of violence against the innocent.

Many are baffled by the horrific suffering humankind inflicts upon its own.

Repeatedly I hear people exclaim, “How can anyone be so hateful?” Others question the existence of a benevolent creator. “If God exists, how can he allow this to happen?”

While I am horrified at the occurrence of any tragedy, I have also recognized a remarkable phenomenon that occurs post-incident: total strangers reaching out to one another in solidarity. Communities of different faiths, races, nationalities, and political beliefs unite for one common cause: to assist and uplift those affected by the catastrophe. Barriers of beliefs and customs dissolve into actions of kindness and contribution. The wellbeing and restoration of those affected becomes the common thread that strengthens and binds all those involved.

In Franklin Lakes, local churches immediately reached out by offering use of their facilities for weddings, masses, and funerals. Donations poured in to rebuild the sacred structure. In Jersey City, neighbors brought food and comfort to those paralyzed with grief in the senseless murders of their loved ones.

Consistently I’ve witnessed the worst of times bringing out the best in humankind. Perhaps that’s the reason these events occur. Maybe it is humanity’s way of reminding us what truly matters in life, which is not our jobs or homes or Monday night football. What really matters most is one another. And maybe it’s God’s way of reminding us of how caring human beings really can be.

Let’s not wait until another senseless act of destruction dramatically alters the lives of those around us. We are beings of light and love. Now is the time to fully express to the world and one another precisely who we are. Let us vow every day to be good stewards to all whom we encounter, graciously and generously sharing ourselves in the spirit of unqualified kindness for our neighbors of every kind. Then perhaps we can put an end to this heinous carnage once and for all.

FALCON FRESHMEN BOYS BASKETBALL GOES UNDEFEATED

I

n his nine-year freshman basketball coaching career, coach Jason Kalish has been able to catch some lightning in a bottle with his teams. Having just one season under 20 wins, the veteran coach puts together good freshman teams every year.

However, this year it was different for the Falcons.

The 2019-2020 Freshman Falcons achieved something unseen in J-Town in its recent history, which was an undefeated record. After a win 67-48 over Parsippany Hills, Coach Kalish can put that milestone behind him clinching 19-0 record on the year.

As fitting as it could possibly be, Johnson extended to the rim and threw down a dunk, explosively adding his name to the Falcon record books. After the energizing dunk, an eruption of fans and teammates partied in Mount Olive, celebrating a well-deserved milestone for Johnson.

And the Falcons won the game, 64-40.

“I have been blessed to be able to coach such impressive players,”Jefferson coach Joe DeGennaro said postgame. Johnson is now the third player in three straight years with 1,000-points, following Steve Breeman and Joe Batelli.

What Johnson proves on the court is just what fans or viewers see. His hard work and will to get better is what has made him into an electric scorer and a future college basketball player at Fairleigh Dickinson University.

“He’s my boy,” teammate Buddy Jacobus said.

“I really wanted the assist but Cole (Fitzgerald) decided to steal that from me. But honestly, Mattie is so deserving of it and I am beyond happy for him.”

Through 19 games on the year, the Falcons’ margin of victory was vast.

They never really had a close contest.

Their closest game of the year was an 18-point victory when the freshmen were still in control all the way.

With a freshman class holding four players that were promoted to the junior varsity level, the 2023 class is deep and talented. Four of the five starters, Luke Urbano, Jake Studnick, Travis Osterhout, and Jason Eisele, have all played quality JV minutes, as well as three seeing some varsity time.

There are two things that seem certain after this freshman basketball season: the future is very bright for the Falcons and Coach Kalish seems to Top: The freshman basketball team is ready for action. Above: Matt have found the secret to consistency.

“Have to thank Buddy, he is always sharing the ball and just an all-around good teammate,” Johnson said. The two have been playing together well before high school and as for Johnson, it has been a milestone he’s been chasing since he first picked up a basketball.

“It’s really cool to finally get it.

Obviously, my teammates have helped me so much to get here.”

Fitzgerald was the favorite teammate of the night for the Falcons, due to his assist for the record books. “I’ve been in the right place at the right time,” Fitzgerald said. “I helped Buddy get the soccer assists record, and now I added Mattie’s record to the list for myself.”

Johnson scored his 1000th point in The team was rounded out by Parker Turton, Monday’s win over Mt. Olive.

MATTIE JOHNSON ADDS ANOTHER LINE IN THE RECORD BOOK

A

s time started to wind down in the Falcons game against Mount Olive, tension continued to grow. Just two points away from one of the most impressive high school basketball milestones was Jefferson senior Mattie Johnson.

As the Falcons led by 15, Matt Moran forced a steal with just under two minutes left in the game. The loose ball trickled out to Cole Fitzgerald, who then passed the ball up to Johnson all alone on a fast break.

Johnson has been playing hurt all year, which has definitely stalled this achievement. Thanks to Sunday’s day off and a light Monday prior to game time, his ankles were in much better shape tonight.

Although the record was achieved, the weight wasn’t lifted but rather just lessened with the milestone. The senior is still chasing a ring, something which has been looming in his eyes for his entire varsity career. As the Falcons season continues to wind down and the state sectional tournament gets closer, the third seeded Falcons seem ready to compete with the help of their new 1,000-point scorer Mattie Johnson.

THE WOMEN OF FIRE COMPANY NO. 2’S LADIES AUXILIARY

I

n April of 1942, the Lake Hopatcong Fire Association was established; and in May, they became Jefferson Township Fire Company #2*.

Four years later in 1946, relatives of the firefighters and other interested women established the Ladies Auxiliary with a mission to provide support and assistance to their volunteer fire company members and the Lake Hopatcong community.

Breeze entry dated July 8, 1950 stating that the auxiliary elected its new officers and Guzvich was elected president again. Fellow officers were Vice President Beatrice Martin; Secretary Mae Jackson, Financial Secretary Mae Riechhart, and Treasurer Lillian Boos.

Wayne T. When Squad membership was low and unable to meet the rising demands of the community, Captain Tom Schilling, Sr. (1959-63) admitted members of the auxiliary as squad members. By 1964-65, the Squad opened its membership to all men and women, even if they were not fire department members.

While there seems to be a significant information gap about the auxiliary from the 1960s through the 1970s, Peg Patrick recalls that she joined the auxiliary in the fall of 1983, her friends Rosemarie Gerber and Judi Condit were already members, and Pat Mannerberg was president. She remembers participating in the Jefferson Rescue Squad’s Carnival selling sausage and pepper sandwiches in the food tent. When the Carnival ended, the group raised funds selling Italian ices at the Fire Company’s Flea Market at Firemen’s Field on Route 15 South, ran spaghetti dinners and corned beef and cabbage dinners for St. Patrick’s Day; and for years, they held flower sales for Easter and Mother’s Day. Patrick reminisces about the parades they participated in wearing their uniforms alongside the uniformed Company 2 firefighters, the most memorable of which was a parade in Hackettstown. The women have had different uniforms over the years, but Patrick said she still has her original one hanging in her cedar closet.

Always ready to assist in an emergency, Patrick remembers providing food and water whenever there was a major fire and will never forget Hurricane Irene in August 2000 that caused flooding and power outages as well as significant damage to roads and bridges in Lake Hopatcong. Utilizing the food stand that the firefighters usually ran during their flea market, the auxiliary was called upon to help feed volunteers from area fire departments who came to assist with the cleanup.

Former Lake Hopatcong resident and Jefferson Township High School alumnus Greg Holt shared information from Fire Company No. 2’s 50th anniversary commemorative book published in 1992 listing Helen Romanosky, Ginny Cunningham, Cecelia Scott, Carol Cassata, Sharon Ryan, Linda Verrinder, Barbara Roberts, Pat Mannerberg, Alma Moran, Patti Chapman, Betty Marshall, Ellen T. Briggs, and Fern Schilling as Life Members.

That anniversary book also lists that in 1992, Adrienne Analzone, Eleanor Cornish, Mary Ellen Degroat, Valare Jacoby, Brenda Kanis, Bonnie Lambert, Jayne Longo, Pat Mannerberg, Erica Patrick, Peg Patrick, Rosemarie Peterson, Lucy DeLoreto, Judy Romanosky, Beth Thompson, Karen Thornton, Robin Williams, and Lori Zinn were active members of the auxiliary. The 1992 ladies’ auxiliary officers were President Pat Mannerberg, Vice President Brenda Kanis, Secretary Rosemarie Peterson, Financial Secretary Adrienne Anzalone, and Treasurer Mary Ellen Degroat.

Kane located an entry in the LH! Weekly (published between 2010 and 2013) that the auxiliary was instrumental in assisting Fire Company No. 2 with its first 5K Inferno Run/

Walk fundraiser to benefit their 2011 Scholarship Program by handing out water to the runners and walkers to keep them hydrated.

The current officers of the auxiliary are President Sandy Loiacono, Vice President Jennifer Patrick, Treasurer Lucy Kienzien, and Secretary Aleyna Mannerberg (a fourthgeneration member). Membership currently stands at 20 members, including inactive members. The Auxiliary meets on the third Tuesday of every month at the firehouse located at Route 15 South and Edison Road, and President Loiacono welcomes any woman to become a member.

Over the decades, it’s evident that the women associated with Company No. 2 have worked tirelessly for decades hosting special events and raising money for the firehouse. During wet downs, a festive volunteer fire company ritual to commission a new fire apparatus by anointing it with water sprayed from visitors’ firefighting equipment, the Company No. 2 Ladies Auxiliary have sold 50/50 raffle tickets and commemorative mugs.

FINANCIAL SUPPORT For three years, the auxiliary ran an annual live decorated Christmas wreath sale but discontinued it due to rising shipping costs. Since 2012, the auxiliary has been hosting semi-annual craft and vendor fairs to raise money; and their fundraiser An Afternoon of Messages from Heaven with a psychic medium and a spiritual artist has been very successful.

In conjunction with their spring 2019 vendor fair, the women hosted a stem cell donor drive through “Be the Match” to bring awareness that stem cell donations result in transplants that cure various serious diseases. Their upcoming spring craft and vendor fair will be on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 3.

In February 2019 at the 66th annual installation dinner of Fire Company No. 2’s new line officers, the Ladies Auxiliary presented a check for $2,000 earmarked for renovating the firehouse’s downstairs bathrooms and adding to their Jefferson Township High School Scholarship Fund. The auxiliary also recently contributed funds towards the purchase of new chairs for the firehouse.

Together, the Ladies Auxiliary members look forward to continuing to serve their community, supporting their firehouse and its firefighters, and celebrating their 75th anniversary next year. * Their sister company Jefferson Township Fire Company #1 is located in the Milton/Oak Ridge section of the township.

STRIDERS TRACK REGISTRATION BEGINS Get ready to run! The Jefferson Recreation Department has announced its 13th spring recreation track season is being offered for 2020.

The Jefferson Striders program is for children in Kindergarten through eighth grades. It will again be part of the Lakeland Junior Track and Field League established in 1973, competing against the Denville, Rockaway, Mountain Lakes, Roxbury, and Hopatcong recreation leagues.

Boys and girls are invited to register for this program, which will provide a great opportunity for them, giving them the experience needed if they want to pursue track opportunities in the future on high school teams. Weather permitting, the Kindergarten through second grade program and the third through eighth grade program will start at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, March 25 at the Jefferson Township High School Media Center, 1010 Weldon Road, Oak Ridge, with a parent meeting, then moving outside to the track for practice.

The participation fee will again be $100 per student at all levels and covers the cost of paid coaches, equipment, team t-shirts, and league fees.

Prices range from $15 per year for an individual to $250 for a lifetime membership. You can also become a patron for $500 per year.
