ntario High School a un nouveau professeur de français. In other words, Ontario High School has a new French teacher. Meet Mr.Taylor! One of the several new additions to our staff.

Similar to our new chemistry teacher, Ms. Moore, Mr.Taylor came from Montclair and was not transferred either.

He applied as a French teacher after teaching English in his preceding job.

When asked about the reason behind his choice of teaching language, Mr. Taylor stated, “I’ve always had a passion for languages and literature. For me, literature is an expression of language, a way to tell stories, create art.”

His goal as a French teacher, and a teacher in general, is to help students gain confidence, especially in a foreign language, as he acknowledges that sometimes speaking it can be intimidating. However, helping the students gain confidence is what helps them ease up and have fun. He also does not fail to mention that everyone is special in his eyes and he wants his students to feel special in their own skin. He states, “I think everyone’s unique. Everyone has their own set of talents and abilities and the educational process itself is about discovering what those are and learning to apply them.”

Mr. Taylor had the opportunity to go overseas to Kazakhstan, Russia and

teach English there. After teaching in Russia for a year he came back and taught English as a Second Language(ESL) which eventually led him into teaching English at the high school level.

It may be hard to believe, but teachers actually do have lives outside of school. For example, Mr. Taylor mentions that he plays both the electric and acoustic guitars, along with the bass, the mandolin, and soon he will learn to play the banjo.

He has played in bands before including a “Teacher band at Montclair” and at his church where he is very involved and also plays guitar on Sunday mornings.

Another interesting thing about our French I instructor is that he does not only speak English and French. He also speaks some Spanish, although he specifies that he is better at understanding than at speaking it. In addition to Spanish, he can speak Russian and even German!

One of the things he has enjoyed since becoming a Jaguar is the cozy campus. He enjoys the fact that it is small and not as crowded. He says,“It’s a bonus.”

Most importantly though, he enjoys our school spirit. He realizes it is intense and is appreciative of it.

If you have not met him; you are missing out! He’s a great new addition to the Jag Staff and here at Ontario we are thrilled to have someone like him.

Aside from being a French teacher, Mr.Taylor has also coached football and track & field.

A study in the Medicine National Institutes of Health explains that pet owners are allowing the reproduction of pets in such numbers that they often do not have money to afford them. In fact, the owners will spend money, in the form of advertising, to make arrangements of finding them homes easily.

West End Shelter For Animals’ goal is to provide a temporary home where owners can turn their pets in for adoption, rather than let them loose on the street where they can become injured.

Pets are safer at the shelter than on the loose. They have been able to place over 800 pets with loving pet owners all over South California through referrals, financial contributions, social media and other outreach programs.

If you are at least 18 years old, you can volunteer, help groom the pets, taking them out on walks and help organize adoption events or fundraisers.

rom Thursday, January 28 to Sunday, January 31 anime and cosplay enthusiasts gathered at the Ontario Convention Center and the Radisson Ontario Airport Hotel for Anime Los Angeles. Anime Los Angeles or “ALA” has previously been held in Los Angeles but this year it was held in Ontario.

The convention offers various panels, workshops, fashion shows, dance offs, live music performances and video rooms to watch the latest anime.

At ALA the ambience is vibrant and everyone has a passion for two things: anime and bringing fictional characters to life through cosplay.

“Anime” refers specifically to animation STEPHANIE CARBALLO from Japan or animation that is inspired by JapaCo-Editor in Chief nese art styles.

ALA gives attendees an opportunity to unleash their inner “fangirl” or “fanboy” and bring their favorite character to life by dressing up as them or “cosplaying” them.

The roots of anime lie in Japan. Japan and the U.S. began communicating regarding animation and entertainment in the 1950’s with meetings between the presidents of Nintendo and Disney.

Japan’s influence did not truly impact the U.S. until the 80’s when Japanese cartoons like Transformers, Pokemon and Power Rangers were translated into English and introduced to American children.

The first editions of Tamagotchis and Nintendo consoles also originate in Japan and became a hit among the youth of the time. Japan’s influence remains embedded in American culture. Today, Nintendo reigns as one of the most popular and trusted gaming companies in the world.

Although produced in the U.S., recent box office titles such as Ponyo and Big Hero 6 are heavily influenced by anime (spectator.co.uk).

While cosplay is immensely popular in Japan, it does not have it’s origins there. Evidence of cosplay dates back to 17th century Ming Dynasty China.

Now, cosplay has expanded to various parts of Asia, prominently in Japan, and Western countries.

Anime and cosplay’s impact is so broad that their influence has found its way into the suburban city of Ontario in the form of conventions like Anime Los Angeles.

ALA is an opportunity for attendees to enjoy and mingle together the gifts of anime and cosplay without having to hop on a plane to Japan. ALA attendees have the opportunity to purchase anime inspired art, buttons, plush toys, DVDs, music and more.

ALA will be held at the Ontario Convention Center and the Radisson Ontario Airport Hotel once again in January of next year, so do not miss out!

laims of a new mysterious planet with 10 times the mass of Earth have made their way across the Internet, sparking much interest among scientists worldwide.

This planet, informally dubbed as Planet X, lies past the Kuiper Belt, an eternally frozen belt of icy comets and other celestial bodies beyond Neptune.

The basis of this claim lies in the orbit of 6 other Kuiper Belt objects (also known as dwarf planets). Their strange elliptical orbits are being influenced by the gravitational pull of a huge planet past the orbit of

Pluto.

This new claim carries with it immense scientific implications regarding the structure of our solar system. It was previously believed that only 8 (9 before Pluto was relegated to a dwarf planet) planets existed before the discovery of Planet X. This new planet, however, is not without skepticism. Outside scientists argue that we should refrain from believing these claims unless we have actual images of the planet.

Regardless, the fact that Konstantin Batygin and Mike Brown of the Cali-

fornia Institute of Technology (CALTECH) made the discovery adds to the credibility of this claim. Mike Brown is well known for his memoir, How I Killed Pluto and Why It Had It Coming, which is responsible for the reclassification of Pluto into a former planet.

Back in 2011, nine year old Caine Monroy was known for having his famous cardboard arcade. That summer, Caine used his father’s discarded boxes to build and design arcade games. Caine designed all the games himself and included tickets and a prize redemption system that he built.

Caine’s Arcade lacked visitors as his friends at school never believed that there was an arcade in his father’s store. But this boy could not go unnoticed.

Film maker Nirvan Mullick walked into Caines

father’s auto shop for a door handle came out with the story of Caine Monroy.Mullick was inspired by Caine. He decided to make an eleven minute film which got over 2 million views and raised, up to date, $241,658.36 that will go towards Caine’s scholarship fund.

We would like to think Caine’s arcade would never go “out of business,” but Caine had other plans.

He said in an interview with NBC, that he wishes to open up a bike shop.

The Nathan Project RACHELLE HUERTA Editor

athan Reyes (Nate) is a 17 year old Junior at Ontario High School, and he is going through one of the most vital battles of his life; leukemia. On December 5th Reyes felt ill and was rushed to the emergency room, where he received a full blood transfusion along with his cancer diagnosis. Reyes has acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

Although he is battling for his life, he is most definitely not alone.

In order to show support, many OHS organizations came together to hold a special day just for Nathan; otherwise known as Nathan Day. This day was held in the hope of collecting donations in exchange for a button; the proceeds of which went directly to Nate and his family to support his fight against cancer.

Nathan Day was an after school event held on January 29th; however, there was also a variety of lunchtime activities in order to create something meaningful.

After school there were performances from our very own students, as their way of showing support for Nate.

Drumline, choir, Dance Company and cheer all came together and showed Nathan he was not alone in his fight.

It was not just these organizations who came together, but Ontario High School as whole. Students, administration and even outside citizens came together to lend a helping hand during this crucial time in Nathan’s life.

I would personally like to thank everyone who was associated with Nathan day. It means the world to me, but most importantly, it meant the world to him.

So again thank you so much. We may be unable to help save all lives, but OHS has proven that we are willing to help in the fight to save one.

Everyday fruits like apples are impacted with the sources that our bodies need to become strong. They help with bone protection, asthma, alzheimer’s prevention, reducing cholesterol levels and lung cancer prevention. In addition, daily consumption of the fresh foods can reduce the risk of breast cancer by 17 percent (Naturalfoodbenefits.com).

Strawberries and avocados are essential for a healthy heart. Avocados are known for maintaining cholesterol levels and contain a great source of vitamins B, K and E and can also be used for skin purposes (Homemadewellbeing.com).

Mix 3 tbs of an avocado and ½ tbs of honey to create an amazing face mask for all skin types. Avocados can help with skin redness, dryness and can treat eczema.

s the need for school vaccination shots increasing in numbers since last year in 2015?

Reports have shown a rise of 2.5 percent vaccination rates in California.

This increase in school shots may be in part of the Disneyland measles incident earlier this year.

The measles issue became a hot topic during the Disneyland outbreak, after the claim in 2000 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, declaring the measles was eliminated from the US. The incident at Disneyland proved this statement to be inaccurate when 100 people were afflicted by the outbreak and the measles had spread to seven other states.

Although the measles is not a part of the requirement for school shots, this outbreak pushed our government to enforce a new law. The new law requires all children to be vaccinated for mandatory shots, and as a result, previous exemption or personal beliefs held by any children and their families’ about the vaccination were not be considered as valid.

But will students continue on this path for taking vaccination shots?

Junior Stacy Martinez says “I got my shots recently, but but only because my mom insisted for flu season. I recall one time, however, I got sick with a flu after getting the flu shot.”

The law, however, will not be officially be in effect until July 2016.

But despite the attempts to increase vaccination rates, 13,000 students in the US were reported to not have been vaccinated last year.

Juniors Lexi Rodriguez and Seth Hamel both agree, “I did not get my shot...I don’t know...my parent’s never bring it up...I only get the shots I need.”

Due to students’ personal reasons, 58 counties in California, alone, documented a report that rates were lower than 95 percent.

This 95 percent being the amount needed to maintain and prevent any diseases such as the measles to spread.

Chemicals banned in Europe but not the U.S. VALERIE SANCHEZ-CERVERA Staff writer

he European Union firmly regulates hazardous chemicals that are found in everyday products used in the United States. As of 2010, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has only banned ten chemicals known to be cancerogenic or to cause birth defects, genetic mutation and organ damage: Chlorofluorocarbon, Chloroform, Halogenated salicylanilides, Hexachlorophene, Mercury, Ethylene chloride, Bithionol, Prohibited cattle material (tallow and its by-products), Trichloroethane and Zirconium.

However, the European Union has banned some chemicals that the U.S. has not.

According to the British Journal of Cancer, Hydroquinone used as a skin-lightening product is a potential carcinogen. Another chemical, P-Phenylenediamine used in hair dyes might help change your hair color, but can cause dermatitis, asthma and sometimes anaphylaxis.

Salicylic acid, used as acne treatments, was banned since February 2014 because it may cause salicylate poisoning and Reye’s syndrome in children and young adults.

Formaldehyde, a preservative to help nail polish stay on,

if inhaled, is a carcinogen that can lead to breathing problems.

Talc, found in powdered cosmetics, deodorants and other products, has been linked to cancer.

While there has been a steady of control of these products in the U.S., they are still banned by the EU. According to the EU, Titanium dioxide, used as a UV filter in some sunblocks, can be a carcinogen when inhaled and can cause organsystem toxicity.

It has been reported that Butylparaben, a preservative used in beauty products, has an effect on the male reproductive systems due to its mimicking of estrogen.

The EU has also banned the ingredients in Red Bull.

Furthermore, they have recently banned olive oil from being served in a jug on restaurant tables.

Although before a company buys an ingredient from a supplier they request a chemical analysis on the ingredient before purchasing, the European Union seems to be more strict than the U.S. People should be careful with the products they consume or apply, and the chemicals included in them, some are known to be cancerogenic, cause genetic mutation and organ damage.

Planned Parenthood funding cuts

number of states have moved to cut funding of Planned Parenthood after the release of secretly recorded videos that show program officials discussing their reuse of fetal tissue from abortions.

Planned Parenthood has defended its program by saying that it only reoccupied expenses for providing tissue to researchers and that the videos were heavily edited.

When the program donates fetal tissue, it does so with signed consent from patients saying that they agree to donate the tissue after the procedure. Planned Parenthood uses this tissue to contribute to research on diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, cancer and AIDS. Nonetheless, the video provoked several investigations by Congress and some states, but legally, they have not broken any laws.

Funding cuts are a constant battle that Planned Parenthood faces and the release of the video has only inflamed the issue.

The association has sued Arkansas, Alabama, Louisiana and other states in order to stop them from eliminating its contracts and federal money. Now Utah has also joined the group of states against Planned Parenthood when its governor, Gary Herbert, ordered to cut their funds.

In response, the Planned Parenthood Association of Utah filed a notice to the United States Circuit Court of Appeal asking them to block Herbet’s demand. However a federal judge declined the appeal and the order continued.

When a program like Planned Parenthood loses money, it loses the opportunity to provide affordable pregnancy tests, abortion services, STI/STD testing and sexual education for men and women of the United States. For pro-life supporters, it lessens the number of abortions in America.

n this day and age, ideas we thought were only capable in our dreams are becoming a reality.

Scientists from the Animal Reproduction Institute of Uruguay have figured out how to insert specific genetic traits into certain animals with outstanding results. These scientists have managed to insert jellyfish genes into several different animals. Genetically engineered to have fluorescent skin in black light, they now have the ability to glow in dark or low-lighted areas.

There are also bioluminescent plants known as Starlight Avatars, which contain dragonfly genes that glow in dim or barely lit environments. The company who grows and experiments with these is called Bioglow, their aim is to make these plants available to everyone for these to become a household name.

Students and researchers from UC Irvine, USC, and UC San Diego have all found a way to successfully modify living embryos.

This method is a system known as CRISPR-CAS9, it was originally tested on mosquitos to fight off malaria. This test was successful and will soon be used to modify (non viable) human embryos.

One concern is that this system is easy to use, meaning this will also be very easy to abuse. One of the co-creators is worried that some may use this to genetically modify viable human embryos-- in other words living beings.

In England, they have recently allowed genetic testing to be done to human embryos. What could this mean? Could this mean that we can create a new generation of human beings? What are the advantages of genetically modifying the human race? The controversy is in playing God, which never ends well in fictitious movies and novels, how much better can it get in real life?

Regardless, this could either be the greatest choice mankind has ever made, or the worst mistake in the history of the human race. On one hand, we can have modified humans, animals and plants to do specific jobs all over the globe. Some can be modified specifically for building, others for fighting foreign wars, as well as agricultural experts.

On the other hand, we could also be building up our own demise when these super humans and animals take over the globe.

ach year brings new and exciting things, and starting in the 2016-2017, Ontario will be offering brand new classes such as Robotics, AP Spanish and Literature and Digital Film.

In previous years at Ontario, many electives were cut due to lack of funding, however, now there will be many new classes that students can take the next school year.

Robotics is one of the many classes that will be offered next year. It will be taught by current AP and Honors physics teacher, Mr. Stafford.

The course will be a problem-solving, engineering class that includes learning about coding, electronics and the use of the arduino.

Second semester will consist of creating projects with the arduino based on their knowledge from the first semester. Mr. Stafford

he argument regarding a student’s freedom of speech has remained a very hot topic in the United States over the course of the last fifty years. Many students are not aware of these rights that have been fought for high school students nationwide and what type of free speech students are entitled to.

In 1965, Mary Beth, age 13, John Tinker, age 15, and Christopher Eckhardt, age 16, all wore black armbands to an Iowa public high school in protest of the Vietnam War leading to their suspensions. The parents of these students argued that it was the students’ right to wear these armbands because it was a form of peaceful protest under symbolic speech.

In the Tinker v. Des Moines Independent School District court decision in 1969, it was decided that “it can hardly be argued that either students or teachers shed their constitutional rights to freedom of speech and expression at the schoolhouse gate.”

This court case was the first step in many taken to ensure the rights of freedom of speech for students today.

In 1986, high school student Matthew Fraser was suspended for giving a speech at a student assembly that contained lewd speech.

Fraser made numerous sexual references and used harmful words and was accused of making a “vulgar” speech as opposed to a pure “political” speech. In the Bethel v. Fraser decision, it was decided by the Supreme Court stated “Surely, it is a highly appropriate function of public school education to prohibit the use of vulgar and offensive terms in public discourse.” This court ruling contradicted the Tinker decision 1965 because a student is allowed to project a political message. The revised court ruling, following the decision of the Tinker v.

The last major court case involving students freedom of speech was in 1988.

A principal at a school censored its school newspaper, The Spectrum, because it contained two stories about teen pregnancy and divorce. The principal believed the story about teen pregnancy was to inappropriate for some younger students, and he found that the divorce story did not allow one of the parents involved in the case the chance to respond to certain comments.

The students at the school felt the principal was violating their First Amendment right. This case found its way to the Supreme Court where it was found that the principal did not violate the First Amendment because the paper had always been semi-controlled by school officials because it was produced as part of the curriculum in a journalism class.

The Court ruled that: “educators do not offend the First Amendment by exercising editorial control over the style and content of student speech in school-sponsored expressive activities so long as their actions are reasonably related to legitimate pedagogical concerns.”

With the help of all of these powerful court cases over the years, the United States has created a safe environment for students to have a freedom of speech as long as it does not disrupt the school.

Students are allowed to profess their beliefs as long as they are within the bounds of the moral code of the school they attend. (www.lastmiracle.com)

The Music Club of Ontario, is an organization where young talented artists can improve their musical talents. The club focuses on producing music at a low cost, however they also do many outstanding things.

Aside from music, they make videos for most of the music they create. Yes, they write their own lyrics and produce their own beats/songs. They have

amazing technology like green screens, sound mixers, as well as instruments and microphones.

There are various questions about the club, which Club adviser Mr. Mangione was willing to answer. Mr. Mangione stated “I did. I have always loved music. Kids think it’s difficult to make music, but once they realize how easy it is, they can realize their dreams…”

Our goal is to let students openly express their musical interests freely and without judgement and also allow for them to realize their musical potential.” This school year, MC-O plans to make a video to help motivate the Junior Jag Nathan Reyes as he fights Leukemia.

There is much anticipation to see what becomes of this club in the near future. Members and bystanders alike are excited to see fellow students reach impressive heights in the world of entertainment.
