Dodger Stadium Renovations ADAM GEORGE

t’s time for Dodger baseball, or rennovations rather. Dodger Stadium is scheduled for a $100 million face lift at the conclusion of the 2019 baseball season. Announced in early July, the stadium will be hosting the 2020 All- Star Game. In this game, the top players from teams in both the National and American leagues will form two separate teams and compete against each other. To further ensure a wonderful night, the Dodger Organization released plans for a $100 million worth of renovations with completion set for the beginning of next season. Dodger Stadium was built in 1962 when the Dodger Organization moved from Brooklyn, New York to Los Angeles, California. After standing proud for 52 years as the third oldest baseball field in America, some modern upgrades were bound to occur. Released plans reveal that the stadium will gain a 2-acre center field plaza. Within this area, a beer garden, two sports bars, a childrens’ play area, and an area for live music will be instituted. In addition to these lively attractions, the stadium will also gain a new sound system, as well as some sort of tunnel system that will link the outfield to the rest of the stadium.

s of June 21st, 2019, Mayor Paul Leon announced that the city of Ontario will receive 5 million dollars to revitalize the Town Square area located along Euclid Avenue. In this plan dubbed ‘Heart of Downtown’, Mayor Leon plans to finance 65 units of housing, and build a workforce development center and a business technology incubator. Revamping Ontario is one of Mayor Leon’s many goals to improve the city and make it a better environment overall for the community. Many of the major renovations will take place in the surrounding area of Euclid Avenue. As for Ontario’s Town Square, most popularly known for its winter nativity scene and it’s various seasonal and weekly events, the city envions that the money set aside for them will be used for road repair, graffiti removal, flower planting and response

sness issue. Currently our Town Square is plagued with empty lots, vacant storefronts and a lack of pedestrians, Leon’s main goal is to address this issue head on. In an interview regarding the proposed plan, Freddie Rodriguez, a California State Assembly Member, stated “The revitalization of Ontario’s historic downtown core is a critically important project for the City and the community as a whole.”

In 1984, anonymous artist illustrated many pictures of the fabulous Euclid Avenue.

The Organization did in fact comment that the wood benches in the outfield, which were the original seats in the originals, will in fact be preserved during this renovation. Dodger fans wait in anticipation for these new changes. But until then, Go Dodgers!

Dodger Staidum renovations are set to begin as soon as the Dodger’s season or potential post-season run ends.

n Friday, August 16th, ASB held the first dance of the 2019-2020 school year: the F.R.O.S.T. Dance. F.R.O.S.T. stands for fun, ridiculous, outside student time. The F.R.O.S.T. dance was held after school from 6 to 10 PM. Students showed up in their hawaiian themed shirts and danced the night away in the quad. This would not have been possible without our teacher volunteers and our campus security officers. When asked how the dance was named, ASB representative Melissa Jaime answered, “This name has been going on not just this year but for a couple years. I do like that it’s an acronym, which I think is fun.” “I think what goes into making probably that we promote it well and that we go ourselves. How do we expect other people to go if we don’t go?” Melissa explained.

“We make it mandatory for ASB to go. We also use social media to promote the dance.” Dances give students the opportunity to have some fun with friends from school outside of class time. Those attending the dance enjoyed watching other students be crazy and have fun on the dance floor. ASB was able to provide Ontario High School a fun and safe way to hang out with friends, even if you are an awkward dancer.

New Staff On Campus

very year at Ontario High School, there is always fluctuation in our staff faculty, with this year being no exception. Through the years we see new positions being taken and new faces on campus and for the 2019-2020 school year there are notable changes in our schools staff. In regards to our schools administration, there has been an alteration in the position of Assistant Principal of Discipline following the transfer of Mr. Placide. Currently, the job title is held under Ms. Morales, former ASB Advisor. “I’m really excited to be here at Ontario High School still; my dad worked here for 35 years, so I’ve basically grown up here at Ontario. I was here as a student, as a teacher, and now the Dean of Discipline, ” says Morales

Our school’s student body has also undergone a change in their leadership, as their new advisor is now Ms. Anderson, who was a former Social Science teacher on campus in years prior. “I’m extremely excited. I’m looking forward to being able to make a new type of impact from teaching in a classroom where I was only able to reach my 170 students: whereas, now I can impact our whole campus on a much larger scale. ” says Ms. Anderson in response to her new mindset for the upcoming school year. There are also new positions such as Ms.Guerrero, who is new to our campus as a second Psychologist this semester.

“It’s exciting and also nerveracking because it’s a lot of responsibilities while working with [all] Students, I’m excited to work with them and provide feedback when doing evaluations,” says Morales. She continues by explaining “You have to have a positive mindset, having a positive mindset is important when dealing with students.” Many positions on campus are susceptible to change, so for students, it should be noted that we embrace these changes overall and focus on a productive school year.

Over the last few years, over 20 faculty members have been switched to new positions

he Ontario High School ASB Executive board play an important role at our school informing our students on upcoming events, and planning the evnts. The members of the 20192020 E-board are Yazmine Mejia, ASB President, Marissa Morgan ASB Vice President, Gizel Reynoso ASB Treasurer and Arlene Avila ASB Secretary. Yasmine Mejia stated, “The reason why I wanted to join ASB was because I really wanted to put myself out there, be more involved.” She aspired to be a leader and did not have a chance until high school. Mejia struggled with what position she wanted. She said, “It was really difficult between myself because I didn’t think I had it in me.” Mejia mentioned, “I really hope that I can be that person that students can go to and ask questions or just go to for advice or if they ever need a hug or a smile.”

SAMANTHA M. VARGAS Staff Writer

Marissa Morgan, the ASB Vice President, found her inspiration in middle school. Morgan recalls, “We came my 8th grade year and we saw a presentation about it.” Morgan was indecisive when choosing her position. She shared, “Originally, I wanted to be treasurer, but then I realized if I did treasurer then I’m settling for less than what I want so I decided to go for it.” Morgan’s piece of advice for the students here at Ontario High School, “To take advantage of opportunities, even if you don’t know really what you’re getting yourself into. Don’t settle for less. Even if it seems like kind of going out on a limb, going for it, if you get it, it’s worth the effort you made.” ASB Secretary, Arlene Avila was encouraged to join ASB. She said, “I actually joined ASB because my elementary school teacher was the one who brought the idea to me...I knew I wanted to pursue it all through high school.” ISAAC EMILIANO HERNANDEZ

Avila spoke about her jobs and responsibilities as secretary, “I have to make sure everything is on track, I have to make sure things get sent to the district, I have to file all the reports. Everything has to go through me first, in order for me to tell Mejia and Morgan, ‘this is what we are doing’.” Avila shared her hopes for 2019-2020 school year, “I really hope to bring more hype and Jaguar spirit like really bring it out at football games, get everyone hyped. I want to make memories for other people.” The ASB E-board has an important role in our daily life at Ontario High School.

ink Crew at Ontario High School has one main goal for the freshman class of 2023: to be a support system and be able to help with everything needed. The incoming freshmen were introduced to their Link Crew leaders on the day of their orientation; the leaders were trained previously on helping the baby Jags of Ontario feel welcome at their new second home for the next 4 years. By providing a tour of the campus, along with a series of ice breakers, each group bonded with their leaders. “I believe link crew benefits freshman because it al lows them to ask for help especially from students themselves,” says Link Crew senior, Valerie Panduro, “it makes them less intimidated to ask for help when it’s someone close to their age instead of an adult. And most importantly it allows them to have someone to encourage them and give them advice from personal experiences.” Another goal they have set for this year is to “get the freshmen involved at OHS by hosting events for them and encouraging them to attend other events held at OHS,” Jennifer De Tejada states.

Ms. Enriquez, advisor for 3 years, says “we invite our freshmen so they come in with their link leader. When it comes to activities at lunch, we invite the freshmen to come participate with us. At dances, we give special invitations so that they understand what’s happening.” Slightly over 20 out nearly 90 link crew leaders are in the 5th period class. In the class, they are divided into four committees: business, publicity, freshman success and scholar athlete committee. The business committee focuses on plans and dates for upcoming events, along with managing paperwork for events such as food fair. The publicity committee make posters and publicize school events. As for scholar athletes, link crew plans on honoring freshmen athletes this year by attending home games and decorating the area. The freshman success group monitor grades to ensure that they do not have D’s or F’s, then leaders attempt to help push them towards success. “Look for the green shirts, they’re there to help,” Enriquez says.

“People should join to learn about new experiences and be more involved with our school and campus!” says senior Yazmine Mejia Lopez.

Junior, Sandra Furtado believes, “It’s a good idea because some people slack off so if it’s one person the whole year, they won’t trust them and it’ll be hard for the team.” For Furtado, this is important so that the team is well balanced in a matter of leadership. It will be an opportunity to have things done differently and give the dancers different experiences.

or months the nation of El Salvador has faced hatred from other countries due to women being convicted for murder for nonintentional misscarriges. This is happening because of the law created in 1997 that states that life begins at conception, therefore any issues happening In the heavily catholic based country, pregnant women are being put behind bars for having “intentional” issues in their pregnancies. In El Salvador, doctors are forced to report when a women is having pregnancy issues because the goverment feels as though they are tampering with their bodies and committing homicide through abortion. It is illegal in El Salvador to have an abortion under any circumstance and if doctors do not report misscarriges or problems they can also be prosecuted. This has been a huge issue among the women because they cannot technically control their bodies.

NOEMI CHAVES & VIRIDIANA SALGADO In 2016, a woman by the name of Evelyn Hernandez was sentenced to 30 years in prison after giving birth to her stillborn child. The day she gave birth she was found on her bathroom floor with a pool of blood. Her mother was worried and took her to the nearby hospital. After doctors accused her of purposely avoiding emergency care to harm her baby, she was found guilty of attempting to terminate her child. Terminations are illegal in under any circumstance, including when the pregnancy poses a risk to the mother or in cases where the victim is raped, which was Hernandez’s case. This specified law criminalizes the women of El Salvador for an issue they sometimes cannot control. In an interview done by CNN, Paula Avila Guillen, director of the Latin America Initiatives for the Women’s Equality Center, states, “People in El Salvador now understand that the law, as it stands right now, criminalizes women in poverty.”

Worker verses Computer

U

niversity of Chicago Medicine’s 2010 video from Edward Hospital was resurfaced and gained popularity on social media. The star of the video is the da Vinci Surgical System and the video shows how precise the robot was in stitching up a small grape. Although it might seem scary to put your life in the hands of a robot, most people nowadays actually prefer robotic surgery over traditional surgery. Robotic surgery requires smaller incisions which will ultimately lead to less bleeding, pain, smaller scars, and a faster healing process for patients. Yes, doctors do operate the robots, but who’s to say in the future, robots can’t be programmed to do surgeries themselves? Getting a job is already competitive enough because you always have to worry about someone who has more education than you; someone who has

SARAH BALTAZAR Staff writer

more experience than you; and someone who simply has more luck than you. But how can you compete against a computer or a robot? A robot doesn’t get sick, or ask for benefits. Apps like Trivago do a traveling agent’s job for free. Paul Petrone from Linked In The Learning Blog has a list of jobs most likely to be taken over by computers. A few mentioned are data entry keyers, library technicians, tax preparers, and almost any job that can be done by a simple algorithm. So finding a reliable career that can take care of you into retirement is harder to come by now. Due to so many jobs being easily taken care of by robots or apps. That is why a lot of people are choosing careers they enjoy over ones that pay the bills. More and more younger people are becoming entrepreneurs or gaining work experience instead of going to college.

No matter how many jobs that can be taken over by future technology, the arts will never go away. Actors, painters, singers, composers, and all other forms of art are being appreciated more and more nowadays. With the power of technology and social media, almost anyone with a talent can share their gifts with the world and gain popularity. Typically, people view being a doctor as the most well-off career because it pays good, and so it makes sense when parents want their kids to be doctors. However, we are lucky enough to live in an economy where you don’t have to sacrifice stability to go into a career you genuinely want.
