A blending of the old with the new, is what Henry J Lyons are aiming to achieve with No.1 Sir John Rogerson’s Quay. A Multi-National IT Company Installs Kingspan Solar to Support LEED ‘Platinum’ Accreditation A multi-national IT company has become the latest corporation to adopt solar thermal as an integral part of its sustainability strategy at its new, landmark offices in Dublin. The company, based at the city’s prestigious EastPoint Business Park, has installed 150 Thermomax HP400 evacuated tubes and a 1,000-litre solar cylinder. The system is designed to heat all the domestic hot water used by the building’s occupants around 2,300 litres per day, resulting in significant reduction in the company’s carbon footprint and its running costs.

Kingspan Solar’s engineers used T*SOL software to estimate an energy yield of 9.83 MWh/year and annual natural gas savings of 1,270.8m3. William Comerford, Commercial Specification Manager at Kingspan Solar, advises: “We are delighted we were asked to be closely involved in this significant development, with our engineers supporting the client’s team at all stages.

“Seeing this technology in action in the workplace is a morale booster for employees and great for visitors to see. The adoption of a renewable energy technology, such as solar thermal, is not just an ethical issue; it also represents a financially sound investment for companies and we hope many more will follow this example.”

The building has already been awarded a LEED ‘Platinum’ accreditation, underlining its attainment and sustainable credentials. Architecture effects the way that we live our lives and the way that we see the world. It can even change the course of history, if it is executed properly. Take a look at Parkside Gardens, Belfast- a regeneration project that McCartan Muldoon Architects have been working on since 2009. Considered an area that was devastated by The Troubles, Parkside Gardens lost the vibrancy that once dominated its cobbles- but with McCartan Muldoon Architects working relentlessly alongside the Newington Housing Association and the local residents- the vitality of Parkside Gardens has begun to return, as its future has been redefined.

Aiming to regenerate the area by providing good homes, repopulating the neighbourhood and rekindling community spirit- McCartan Muldoon Architects understood from the very beginning that consultation with the residents and their local community group was going to play a critical role in the project’s success. “We do a little bit of everything- no job is too big or too small,” Adrian said.

“We are looking into setting up our own design department now, as we are constantly looking for new ways that we can improve on our service.

We already build our own timber frames, which speeds up many of our projects, but we don’t just want it to stop there.
