Letter EDITOR’S

Welcome to our first issue of 2022!

If you’re like me, you remain cautiously optimistic that this year will be different to the previous two. Yes, we are dealing with yet another COVID variant, but we have also got the vast majority of people vaccinated, which (hopefully) means that in-person events will make a great return! Industry conferences, such as ASCD Symposium, the Non-Surgical Symposium, and Dr Steven Liew’s Aesthetics are back on, and we can’t wait to see many of you there.

In even more exciting news, our very own industry event, Beauty & Spa Insiders, is also taking place in Sydney on September 12, 2022. The day will be packed with inspiring and informative panels and presentations, and of course, plenty of networking opportunities (which just cannot be recreated on Zoom!). Registrations will open soon so stay tuned!

In this issue, we’ve dedicated our biggest feature to Cosmetic Nurses. Injectable treatments are undoubtedly one of the fastest growing areas in aesthetics, and so is the amount of registered nurses deciding to focus on cosmetic treatments. With many of them opening their own clinics, an entrepreneurial spirit and a strong work ethic is crucial in oder to be successful. Head to page 81 to hear from inspiring nurses and those in the industry that are continuing to put patient safety first.

If the start of a new year has got you thinking about introducing some new treatments to your spa or clinic, from page 77 you can read about the latest aesthetic devices to take your offering to the next level. Finally, our beautiful cover star and Founder of Waterlily Skincare, Michelle Reeve, talks us through the meaning of ‘slow skincare’ and why she thinks a spa renaissance is upon us.

Enjoy reading this issue!

Murad Retinol Booster HydraFacial Reviewed by Advertising

Manager Kym Cowper

HydraFacials have become a staple in many people’s professional skincare routines. It’s the perfect maintenance facial for healthy, glowing skin – there’s a reason millions are performed worldwide every year. Depending on your skin type and skin concern, different so-called ‘boosters’ are used during the infusion process, and the latest one to launch in Australia is an absolute game-changer. The HydraFacial Company have announced an exciting new partnership with Murad, who have developed the Murad Retinol Booster for HydraFacial. This potent retinol serum supposedly “accelerates skin’s surface renewal and plumps to minimise the look of wrinkles, even tone and boost a youthful, radiant finish,” as I learn from the brand. I can’t wait to give it a go!

I am invited to the ultra cool HydraFacial HQ in Sydney,

my face to prepare my skin for the next step, which is the extractions process using another mild acid solution called Beta-HD to clear my pores and optimise their ability to retain the star of the show: The Murad Retinol Booster.

The Retinol Tri-Active Technology in the booster works by uniting three retinol technologies (fast-acting retinoid, time-released retinol, and retinol booster) for visible results with minimised side effects. The booster also contains micronised collagen peptides to visibly firm and plump, and apple, watermelon and lentil extracts, which deliver a fast-acting, visible reduction of lines and wrinkles with lasting hydration.

Fergil glides the tip along every inch of my face to deeply infuse the booster, and I can feel a very mild tingle around my nose, otherwise the treatment is extremely comfortable and almost feels like a face massage. To further enhance the results of the booster, Fergil then uses red LED light to assist product penetration. As the last step of the Murad HydraFacial a combination of antioxidants is infused to protect my skin.

About 45 minutes in, I can already feel how clean and supple my skin is, but I am blown away when Fergil hands me a mirror. I can’t remember the last time my skin looked this hydrated and plump, and the lines around my eyes have visibly reduced! There was a little bit of redness, which subsided within a couple hours. It really is the perfect pickme-up treatment, which I would not only recommend as a regular maintenance treatment, but also the day before a big event – the glow is real!

I am given Murad’s Retinol Youth Renewal trio to use at home to prolong the results of the treatment, and I already know that I will be back!

The Bee Venom Facial

Reviewed by Managing Editor Nadine

Facialist April Brodie is known for her amazing gua sha and buccal facials, but she has introduced another interesting facial to her repertoire that sounded too intriguing not to try. The bee venom facial was created in the UK using the patented ingredient ‘Abeetoxin’, which acts like a natural form of botulinum toxin and can be harvested from a beehive. Bee Venom contains more than 20 known compounds that promote significant antiinflammatory, anti-bacterial, and skin rejuvenating benefits. This unique facial experience has been created using sustainably sourced, natural and organic ingredients to not only tackle the visible signs of ageing but also combat sun damage, pigmentation, acne, and rosacea. After a thorough cleanse, Brodie applies a mild peel to not only my face, but all the way down my décolletage, arms, and hands. She sculpts my face and neck using her unique massage techniques, and lets the bee venom mask, of which only 500 are made each year, do its magic on my skin, which feels soft and plump at the end. Who knew bees could be the answer to rejuvenation? aprilbrodie.com

Sciton BBL Hero

Reviewed by Advertising Manager Kym Cowper

With the news that Laser Clinics Australia has added Sciton’s BBL Hero to their already impressive portfolio of treatments, we were invited along to trial it out for ourselves. The BBL Hero is a quick, pain-free broadband light treatment designed to improve tone, pigmentation and overall texture of the skin for so many areas, such as face, neck, chest, arms and hands. I arrive at Laser Clinics Bondi greeted by my gorgeous therapist who discusses my skin concerns and follows the pre-treatment protocol to a T. We decide that I would benefit from a series of 3 x BBL treatments and they will concentrate on my face, neck and decolletage – might as well do my whole body while I’m there! A glide product is applied to the areas we are treating, I pop on my goggles to protect my eyes from the Intense Pulse Light and we begin, my therapists does two passes and before I know it my entire face, neck and deck has been treated in what feels like no time at all. The hand piece heats up to a bearable temperature – it feels a bit like a zapping hot stone massage with a light show! After my treatment my therapist applied sunscreen and I am advised to avoid actives for at least a week. This walk in walk out treatment left me with no downtime, with a benefit of a day two glow, my skin is definitely looking fresh, toned and even feels a bit firmer. laserclinics.com.au

Hismile PAP+ Teeth Whitening Treatment

Reviewed by Managing Editor Nadine

A beautiful white smile has become just as important to most people as healthy skin. The last few years saw a rise in at-home teeth whitening kits, with hismile dominating the market. Now, they have launched a professional treatment you can have at your dentist. Like other professional teeth whitening treatments, it promises to lighten your shade of white significantly, but for the first time ever, without any pain or discomfort. I got to experience the PAP+ treatment at Dr Fadi Yassmin’s clinic in Sydney and can confirm that the only small bit of discomfort comes from keeping your mouth open for an hour, other than that, I walked out with whiter teeth and absolutely no pain after 60 minutes. My gums felt a bit ‘raw’ for about an hour post-treatment before the feeling subsided. The PAP+ treatment is unique as it doesn’t use peroxide, which is the traditional ingredient used to whiten teeth. Peroxide is known to demineralise teeth and leave them weak, exposed and sensitive, but with PAP+, clients can even improve their enamel structure and reduce pre-existing tooth sensitivity. I am super happy with the result and can’t stop smiling. hismileteeth.com

Located in Sydney’s hip Inner West district of Leichhardt is a skin and beauty clinic that understood the assignment of creating a luxurious experience for its clients. “We wanted to consider the needs of our clients whilst making it a stylish yet meditative space,” says Tiziana Tringali, practice manager, co-owner and wife of Dr Rino Tringali. “Our furniture is custom made by artisans and several pieces in the main areas are restored antiques. I wanted to create a gallery-like space in the hallway so we commissioned artwork specifically for this space.”

Facts & Figures

Name: THE NORTON CLINIC Co-Owners:: TIZIANA TRINGALI AND DR RINO TRINGALI

Location: SYDNEY, NSW

Size: 220 m2

Treatment Rooms: 7

Interior Inspiration: LUXURIOUS, RELAXING, CALM

“The relaxing zone is my favourite spot, unique to The Norton Clinic, our clients can come into a calm and cosy space after their treatments to unwind and relax on the velvet and soft sheepskin chairs, whilst drinking a soothing herbal tea or work on their laptop as if they were in the comfort of their own home. Unlike other clinics, we created this new concept because we know how important it is to evolve with our clients’ lives and needs and being able to offer a space where our clients can unwind and relax after a treatment, or continue with their daily life and work on their laptop in a comfortable setting is a must,” Tiziana says.

The Norton Clinic is run by experienced medical doctors, but Tiziana didn’t want it to feel like a sterile clinic. “Our clients really love that even though they are receiving the top cosmetic treatment, they can feel as if they are in

a chic and luxurious space rather than being in a doctor’s clinic. They also say they love seeing exclusive, international brands displayed that they have never seen before in Sydney such as, Julia T Hunter, MD products from L.A. or Officina Santa Maria Novella all the way from Florence, Italy.”

But it’s not just exclusive retail products that The Norton Clinic impresses with, it’s also the highest standard of medical devices they use to treat their clients. Dr Tringali chooses Aussie Medi Tech Lasers for his clinic.

“I first met Jim Norman, the Director of Aussie Medi Tech, at one of his laser workshop events in 2016. Over the past four years I have purchased multiple devices from Jim as I have found his deep knowledge and experience with state-of-the-art lasers highly beneficial to my clinic.  The devices include the powerful Discovery Pico Plus, The Radiofrequency Lift Shape, 585nm Vascular Laser and most recently the Duetto Mixed Technology hair removal device. All the devices are from Italy and are reliable and provide me with outstanding results for my clients.

“My partnership with Aussie Medi Tech has given me the support and trust that I need to ensure that my clinic and clients get the best outcome from my purchase. Jim has provided me with an all-round personalised experience from multiple training sessions, marketing assistance, and ongoing support. We want our customers to not only receive the best quality service and cutting edge cosmetic treatments but also experience a haven of calm and luxury and be surrounded by elegance and beauty.”

THIS BRAND NEW DAY SPA IN SYDNEY’S INNER WEST COULD BE YOURS!

A unique business opportunity for day spa managers.

If you have been thinking about opening your own day spa, this could be your sign to do it – and most of the work has already been done for you. Petersham RSL Club, an iconic Inner-West venue is seeking to open a brand new, state of the art community hub as part of The Siding Residential and Retail Precinct in 2022. To complement its beverage, dining and entertainment facilities, the Club is seeking Expressions of Interest from suitably qualified professional day spa/massage operators.

If the term ‘RSL Club’ makes you think of stained carpet and daggy decor, don’t worry, this one is different. Petersham RSL’s Day Spa will feature an ultra modern, classy design, as shown in these renders by Red Design Group. Earthy tones and a mix of different natural textures will be sure to entice the over 13,000 club members, and residents of the 350 units that are part of the new residential precinct.

The day spa’s facilities are approximately 129m2 consisting of:

• Reception area

• Retail sales section

• Shower facilities

• 5 treatment rooms

Another unique aspect of this business opportunity is the possibility to open from 10am to 3am to align with the RSL’s opening hours, serving clients until late at night. The prominent main road exposure in a brand-new hospitality/residential development as well as security parking for 140+ vehicles will make it easy for clients to find your business and come back for more.

The successful operator will:

• Have a proven track record in providing a high quality and value for money service

• Work with Club Management to ideate and promote the business

• Have a high standard of customer service

• Provide sample day spa menu options and pricing

• Develop a formal marketing plan that will resonate with key demographics within the catchment area

• Ensure that operations run efficiently, legal obligations, hygiene and WH&S requirements are met

The Expression of Interest should include:

• Cover letter

• Business proposal

• Sample spa menus and pricing (Members and Visitors Prices)

• Details of your experience and resume

• Referees

AESTHETICS 2022: OPENING YOUR EYES

We get the inside scoop from Dr Steven Liew on what you can expect from his conference.

It’s time to mark your calendars because the countdown is on for the Aesthetics 2022 conference, which is set to take place on August 5–7 at the Sydney Hilton Hotel. After the success of the inaugural Aesthetics 2019 conference and the subsequent disruption of the pandemic to the industry, Aesthetics 2022 will offer next-level education and inspiration for attendees through the theme “Opening Your Eyes”.

The 2.5 day program aims to challenge the status quo, to question and build new ideas around how we can do it better and safer for both industry professionals and patients. We spoke to conference convenor and specialist plastic surgeon, Dr Steven Liew, to get a sneak peek of what to expect from Aesthetics 2022.

What can people expect from Aesthetics 2022 and who is it for?

SL: Aesthetics 2022, just like A2019, is not your typical conference. We offer the most real, honest and practical learning experience for the attendees. I guarantee everyone will walk away having learnt something that they can use for their daily practice, for their personal and professional development, and something to challenge themselves, regardless of their level of expertise. We will not bore our community with slideshow presentations, but share and saturate them with the most succinct and crucial scientific facts, as well as useful, practical tips and tricks.

Without giving away too much, we will also have red carpet networking opportunities for all, of course!

What topics will be discussed?

SL: Aesthetics 2022 will be jam-packed with live demonstrations including injectables, skin therapies, laser and devices. In short, we want the audience to upskill and gain more knowledge, or become inspired to equip themselves with the most real and practical knowledge to run a modern non-surgical aesthetic practice.

What makes Aesthetics different to other conferences?

SL: I like to think of Aesthetics 2022 as ‘Edutainment’, combining education in an entertaining and stimulating format where all relevant and trending topics, including difficult and controversial ones, will be discussed.

What are you looking forward to most?

SL: This year, I am most looking forward to a new addition to Aesthetics 2022, a world first format, AestheticsCast, where attendees get the chance to attend a webinar 6 weeks after A2022. This will provide them a second chance to reinforce their learning, and, based on the audience feedback from A2019, allow attendees to revisit the top three segments of the conference, access the reveal of results with live discussions, and watch additional Q&As with various experts from the conference.

Registrations will open soon.

ASCD President, Prof Greg Goodman AM, says he is looking forward to seeing people in person as well as having several speakers from overseas attend the conference in Melbourne. For those who cannot make it to the Symposium in person, it will be available online to watch. Of course, there will be plenty of time to mingle and network. Friday night will see attendees at welcome drinks where delegates from around the country will come together whilst enjoying Australian wines and delicious food. PreviewingCOSMEDICON 2022

Australia’s boutique, face-to-face aesthetic medical learning event is back!

With the past year punctuated by lockdowns and border restrictions, COSMEDICON 2022 is shaping up for many to be the first opportunity in a year for aesthetic medical practitioners to gather faceto-face, network and learn, as well as let their hair down during the popular social program. Here’s a preview of what will be happening at the pinnacle of boutique aesthetic medical conferences in Australia.

With COSMEDICON now in its fifth year, the 2022 iteration will continue to place an emphasis on the quality of the scientific program, the experience of the speakers and the open sharing of knowledge between attendees. It is a multi-disciplinary conference that welcomes medical health practitioners from all streams and holds that practitioner education is the key to patient safety.

It encourages excellence in all aspects of cosmetic medicine – not only in clinical practice but also through business strategies on how to effectively set up, manage and eventually on-sell an aesthetic medical practice.

The COSMEDICON 2022 two-day scientific program has been curated to ensure the inclusion of an impressive crosssection of industry leaders providing thought-provoking, skill-enhancing presentations and panel discussions over a range of acutely relevant subjects – from the latest techniques and technologies to best clinical practice guidelines, management and marketing strategies. It will feature relevant topics, such as ‘HR and government mandates’, an interactive panel discussion and case studies on ‘HA hypersensitivity reactions’, cutting edge techniques and products in minimally invasive cosmetic practice, including facial rejuvenation/injectables, body sculpting, skincare, laser and business/practice support.

The COSMEDICON mission is always that delegates will return home with plenty of new ideas and practical skills that can be implemented immediately.

Workshops

In addition to the scientific program, the COSMEDICON 2022 pre-conference program includes a full-day ‘Combination Therapy’ workshop hosted by EnVogue Skin. It will consist of a didactic course and live demonstration of

combination therapies using injectables and thread-lifting techniques and is free to all delegates registered for the scientific program.

Pre-conference Thursday also features half day workshops hosted by Solta Medical; ‘Facial rejuvenation with a gentle and effective fractionated laser that is easy to use’ and Dermocosmètica; ‘Skin remodelling’, with delegates free to move between sessions.

The two-day scientific program also features breakfast workshops on both days. On Friday, with Merz Aesthetics; ‘combining botulinum toxin and dermal fillers’ and Saturday with Alma Lasers; ‘Learn the new leap in scar revision and skin rejuvenation’.

Sunday features an intensive multimodal didactic ‘Facial Injectable Training (FIT) and Non-Surgical Facial Rejuvenation Techniques for Beginners’. This full-day course is designed to introduce the Scope of Practice and deliver some familiarity to allow a practitioner to start their aesthetic practice.

Back by popular demand is the ‘Advanced Cosmetic Nurse Injector Workshop’. It returns on Sunday to cater for the unique requirements of these aesthetic medical practitioners. This full-day program is aimed at the experienced cosmetic nurse injector and includes a focus on safety, research, anatomy and marketing. It will also have case study presentations, an advanced live injecting session and an expert panel discussion offering opinions on the topics of the day.

Social Functions

In true Bella Media fashion, COSMEDICON 2022 will host a lavish and fun social program – that starts with Welcome Drinks in the Stillery Bar on Thursday night from 7:00pm.

The ‘Priscilla’ Gala Dinner at the InterContinental, Double Bay is this year sponsored by High Tech Medical – featuring a cavalcade of Drag Royalty and world renowned DJ Stephen Ferris (he has provided soundtracks for the City of Sydney 2000 New Years Eve celebration, VIVID, Mardi Gras amongst others). CREATE A COMPREHENSIVE CLIENT CONSULTATION WITH THESE 6 TIPS

Kitomba’s Isabella Castle tells us what makes and breaks the first encounter with your client.

Creating a memorable client experience starts with a great consultation. It’s an opportunity to build a relationship, share your expertise, understand your client’s expectations and communicate how you’ll fulfill them.

We’ve gathered the six best tips to help you deliver a comprehensive client consultation every time a client walks through the door:

1. Create a great first impression

You don’t get a second chance to make a first impression! Start with a warm welcome, and make your client feel comfortable by asking questions that will help you get to know them. Then, watch your body language. Get on the same level as them by sitting down, and try to be face to face instead of side by side if possible. This can help your client feel like you’re really listening.

Lastly, take the time to really understand what they want by repeating things back to them if you’re unclear, and remember to take notes of important details in their client card when necessary.

2. Questions, questions, questions

The more questions you ask, the better you’ll understand your client’s expectations and needs. Start with the client’s history, what they like and dislike, and what they want to achieve. You could ask about their previous experiences, what they thought of them, and why they came to you. Then ask them about their lifestyle, for example how much spare time they have and what kind of budget they would like to stick to.

Taking the time to understand everything you can about your client makes them feel understood, ensures you deliver exactly what they want, and helps to build a relationship. This in turn makes them more likely to come back to you in the future.

3. A picture is worth a thousand words

Photos are an easy way to understand exactly what your client wants and to record their progress and results. If your salon software allows your clients to upload photos when they book online, make sure to review what they’ve submitted so you can get an idea of what they’re wanting well before they arrive.

28 | SPA+CLINIC

It’s also easy to track your client’s progress by taking before and after shots. After you take the photos, add them to their client card using your salon software so you’ll easily be able to find them in the future.

4. Keep client records up to date

Take note of everything you learn about your clients, so you have a thorough understanding of them and a well documented history of your consultations. Reduce admin when you record information about your clients by using your salon software. Add notes to their client card during or after their appointment, or let them add the information themselves by handing them a digital form. Your salon software should automatically populate their client card, so you don’t have to waste time typing everything in later!

Keeping note of your client information, their preferences, and any other notes, will ensure you’re well placed to give them a great client experience every time they visit you!

5. Manage your client’s expectations

Clients can sometimes come in with expectations that might not be realistic, or not achievable in a single appointment. The consultation is an opportunity for you to manage their expectations and give them expert advice. Confidently

communicate everything the client needs to know, so there are no surprises at the end and they walk out with exactly what you discussed.

6. Create a consultation guide for your team

Consistently great client consultations will ensure every client feels well looked after and happy with their experience. The best way to make sure every consultation is conducted at a high level is to train your staff on how you’d like them to conduct their consultations, and document that training into a guide that they can refer back to. Include how to make clients feel welcome, the types of questions to ask, and best practices for recording this information.

Using your client consultation to get to know your client, their expectations, and their likes and dislikes, means you’ll be able to give them an amazing client experience that is hard to find anywhere else. So give our tips a try, and see how your client consultations improve!

My favourite Kitomba feature is Kitomba 1. I love that the stylists can have it on their phones and easily track their KPIs and targets. It also simplifies the salon experience. We don’t have a typical front of house, so most of our point-of-sale is done on an iPad.

YOUR PERSONAL DERMAL Therapist

Tamasen Knight has worked as a dermal therapist and educator at some of Sydney’s most prestigious clinics. Now, she is starting her own business, but it’s not a clinic.

What is your background in the aesthetics industry?

I have over 10 years of experience in the beauty industry and have a strong commitment to advancing my skills and knowledge to help me deliver the highest quality of service to clients. I receive great personal satisfaction from working with clients to help them achieve their goals. A client’s confidence is my biggest compliment. Most recently I had been working at All Saint clinic with Dr Joseph Hkeik and as a Clinical Educator at The Australian Laser and Dermal Institute.

My passion is helping others feel more confident in their own skin. I enjoy layering dermal modalities with traditional facials to achieve maximum results and relaxation.

What made you decide to start your own business?

I am currently on maternity leave and wanted to find a way to stay connected with my clients but also present as a mum of my two beautiful kids. Through lockdown I had contact with many long term clients and continued to take care of their skincare routines. This got me thinking, how can I create a business model where I can service clients virtually? And so, Revive Aesthetic Consulting was born.

Think of me as your personal shopper for the aesthetic industry. I will do all the running around for you. From sourcing skincare to getting you a quality recommendation and costings of treatments. I focus on a holistic consultation process and source skincare according to the client’s budget and concerns. For treatment recommendations I make recommendations based on my industry knowledge and utilise the

large network of business reps that I have come to know over the years.

Being that I have no affiliation with a particular skincare range, I am able to make a recommendation based of suitability. As much as I am and want to be seen as an unbiased advisor, I’m very biased in the recommendations I make. I’m very specific in my values as a therapist, only aligning myself with clinics and companies that share these same values.

It is really important to me that any recommendations I make are not “cold”. I like to speak to the clinic and ask about their values, consultation process, treatment protocols and process. I want my referral to be of the highest quality ensuring the client is going to have the best experience and treatment outcome.

Once I have made my recommendations, I will follow up how their journey is going and ensure they are being taken care of. I have many clients that have come back to me for new concerns (mainly body) whilst continuing their relationship with their current clinic. This for me is a key part of why I love this business model. I am not limited to the skincare ranges or treatments I would normally have access to in clinic. I am able to give advice based on what the industry has to offer and that is really exciting!

How do you decide which brands and practitioners to recommend?

Where I am diagnosing a treatable skin condition, I will only work with brands that are prescribed through cosmetic clinics (clinical skincare), reputable brands that have studies to back their effectiveness. Being that I have worked with many clinical ranges in clinical practice, I prefer to recommend a range I have

personally worked with and know its limitations. This enables me to treat confidence and get the best results possible.

With treatments, there is always something new coming out. Firstly I like to look at the values of the company. Then I want to see that the treatment not only does what it claims to do but has good long lasting results and clinical papers to prove effectiveness. It’s so important to trial new ranges and further my knowledge and skill set in treatment modalities. I want to make the best, most informed recommendations and something that is really important to me is that I try it myself first.

I have worked alongside many experts in the aesthetics industry and will recommend them for their different strengths or depending on location. I have established relationships across Sydney so that when referring clients I know that they will be in the best hands.

What kind of client are you targeting?

Really I can help anyone, anywhere in AUS. But my current strategy is to grow a community of females that are serious about their skin and feeling good in it. Through basic skin education. Lots of health and lifestyle tips. Building a personal relationship through my shared experiences. Helping balance stress in our busy lives, especially as mums. I take the hard work out of it. It will save you going to numerous consultations and researching the web.

Who pays for your services?

At this point I have a consultation fee for clients when they book. For the reputable clinics I love and trust I get a small percentage of the treatment performed from referral. I have set up two referral partnerships with two clinics in my local area. This is where a large portion of my long term clientele is. But as I expand and grow I will be reaching out to reputable clinics to look at taking more onboard.

Why do you think people need a “personal dermal therapist”?

Have you ever been to one clinic and been given advice then gone to another to get different advice? Do you get overwhelmed at the abundance of skin care brands there is on the market? My service is: Industry advice made easy. I do the running around for you. I source the skincare for you and ship it straight to your door. I make all treatment enquiries for you and give you the best suited recommendations for your concerns.

As a therapist, I would often find depending on the clinic I was in that I was limited to what that clinic had available. My recommendation was about picking the best suited treatment or product from what I had. With Revive Aesthetic

Consulting there are no limits. I make the recommendation on what the industry has to offer. The nerd in me loves that!

What is your clients’ feedback so far?

I have had a great response from both clients and industry representatives. I have clients that have continued to come back for further recommendations after initially starting with skin, now they have had advice for hair removal, laser treatments, body, cosmetic injectables. I have clients that continue to re-purchase their skincare through me. I always take the time to touch base and follow up. This means I can change the routine or ingredients as needed. I also have clients that have been referred on and had a great experience.

What are your plans for 2022?

As I grow my following I hope to empower, educate clients, and advocate for them. By growing my name as a trusted industry advisor I will be able to take on more referral partnerships. I am looking to work with some key brands in putting together some great treatment videos and social media campaigns. I think in the world right now everyone could use a real dose of positive energy, so I plan to throw it around like glitter. Lessons FROM LOCKDOWN

People & Culture have never been a more important aspect of your business. Savvy business owners are enlisting help from experts to ensure they stay in touch with their people and stay ahead of the Great Resignation.

The years 2020 and 2021 will be remembered for many reasons including long lockdowns, the worldwide adoption of Zoom, wearing masks for everyday outings and the unprecedented use of the word ‘unprecedented’. However, some of the most lasting changes created by the pandemic are those that have impacted workplaces around the world.

During the height of the pandemic, workforces shifted focus, transformed their product offering and adapted to remote working models, all in an effort to survive. Despite the stressful and turbulent aspects of dealing with a worldwide pandemic, an upside of the long periods of lockdown was the shift in the way people think about and act in the workplace. Resulting in both physical and cultural workplace changes that will remain with us forever!

Workplaces that truly thrive in the ‘new normal’ era will be those that learn from worldwide trends, take time to listen to their employees, embrace change, provide flexibility and focus on creating a positive workplace culture that nurtures mental health and employee wellbeing. This is a big task and many businesses simply can’t focus on all these aspects and run a profitable business at the same time. Another trend has been a huge uptake in enlisting experts in the field of People & Culture to help manage the post lockdown generation workplace.

It is not just employees who are changing, it is employers too! The pandemic has forced business leaders to embrace the digital age as the traditional workplace retreated to the home for many workers. Employers and employees were forced to focus on what is really important to them and reflect on the things that they had simply accepted as part of employment, such as travelling long distances to work, putting up with long hours, unreasonable workloads or dealing with the office grouch or bully!

Time away from the workplace gave both bosses and workers the opportunity to reflect on what is really important to them. For many employers it was the first time they had truly focused on: what was not working, how things could be done differently and how important workplace culture is in attracting and retaining top talent. Thanks to COVID-19, the

people management space has been transformed forever and embracing new technology or allowing employees to work from home is only the tip of the iceberg.

As the world returns to the new normal, employees are crying out for greater flexibility in the hours they work and to have a say in where they work. Now more than ever, there is a focus on a positive workplace culture that will protect and nurture mental health. Astute business owners are looking at worldwide trends including ‘The Great Resignation’ and listening to their employees’ demands, all in a bid to stay ahead of the game and ensure they not only retain their valued employees but also attract top talent to their teams.

‘The Great Resignation’ is a term that was given to the worldwide trend that is seeing people leaving their jobs in droves across UK, USA and Europe. The World Economic Forum provided a shocking statistic; 41% of employees worldwide plan to leave their jobs this year (2021). A PwC report titled What Workers Want: Winning the War for Talent, in which 1,800 Aussie workers were surveyed, revealed a staggering 38% of workers plan on changing jobs in the next 6 – 12 months.

Retaining key people and attracting the best in the candidate pool has never been more important. According to a study by Seek, the average time to fill a vacant role in Australia has grown to 82 days, up from an average of 68 in 2018 and a figure that has doubled since 2010. Additionally, it takes an average of 26 weeks for a new hire to be fully competent in their role, providing great incentive to implement changes or business owners to ensure they hold on to the top talent already in your business.

In our changing workplaces, where people are focused on personal wellbeing and flexibility, work-life-balance and making life choices based on the delivery of these requests, there is no better time to be looking carefully at your People & Culture! Lizzy Boots is the Director of Boots

3 Ways to Ensure A Modern Workplace: Beware of Burnout

Forward thinking businesses are looking at implementing robust health and wellbeing programs to reduce the risk of high valued employees resigning, taking time off or performing poorly due to stress. Research by Professor Gordon Parker - University of New South Wales discovered “Burnout rates are lower in organisations that have effective and supportive leadership, are flexible, foster training and staff development, have constructive conflict resolution procedures, evidence justice and try to ensure that staff have meaningful work.” Professor Parker’s research also identifies loss of feelings and enjoyment from people’s daily activities as symptomatic of burnout.

Give Regular Feedback and Communicate Openly with your People

A study by LinkedIn found that 80% of Millennials prefer feedback in real-time, compared to annual performance reviews. Implementing one on one (1:1) conversations will enable your team to be more transparent with how they’re really feeling. From here, you can address any concerns and help employees stay on track to reach their goals. Holding regular 1:1 meetings with staff has been proven to reduce employee turnover rates by 14.9%.

Create a Positive Workplace Culture

Workplace culture defines the qualities that make up a business and dictate how people within it should think, act and work together. Workplace culture is not only an incredibly important part of an individual’s success at work, it is also important to the success of the business. Positive workplace cultures do not happen by accident, they are carefully planned and managed by business leaders and their HR teams. Businesses who don’t have a HR Team are outsourcing one, because developing a culture of positive feedback, inclusivity and purpose driven mission is what employees are seeking and this all takes time.

Collagen Lounge

Collagen Lounge opened its doors in November 2021 and, as the name suggests, is all about collagen! Offering full body Red Light Therapy, clients come to enjoy 20- or 30-minute sessions on the beds and let the light do its magic. According to owner Sandra Gavelan, red light therapy works by delivering controlled, low-level wavelengths of light to the skin. This triggers a regeneration response below the skin’s surface, at approximately 5 to 10 millimeters, encouraging the production of collagen, elastin and fibroblasts. These are key components for maintaining strong, resilient, and plump skin, so by boosting their production, the skin is better equipped to repair and regenerate.

“One of the best things about red light therapy beds is that there is no preparation required, no pain, and no harm caused by using it,” she says. “Clients can unwind in one of our comfortable collagen-enhancing beds while the red light works its magic on their skin.”

On top of red light therapy, the studio offers a large retail selection of collagen supporting supplements from brands such as IMBIBE, Vida Glow, beauty food, Fusspot, and Baré Folli. collagenlounge.com.au

Club W

As we all incorporate more wellness into our everyday life, it’s great to see dedicated spaces open up giving everyday people the chance to enhance their lifestyles. Club W is the new brainchild of Gwinganna founder Tony de Leede, and combines a co-working space with wellness offerings, such as infrared saunas, LED treatments, massage chairs, and dedicated yoga and meditation rooms. Different memberships cater to people’s needs, with the full membership giving people access to all of the above, so they can easily combine work with wellness. A cafe serving healthy food options is available, too, as well as hundreds of wellness videos members can access on their devices. The first Club W is now open in Cronulla, with more in the pipeline. “We’re catering to those who want to live longer and live better,” says de Leede. clubw.com.au

St.Germain

The team at St.Germain has made it their mission to set themselves apart from the standard clinic, opting for a chic, minimalist aesthetic filled with light, abstract shapes and textural finishes. The clinic is complete with a curated menu of potent treatments, world-class therapists and a soothing, ambient space like no other. “My time in St.Germain has stuck with me, and I just knew it was the perfect name for my own work of art,” says founder Maryanne Petsinis. “Our salon is light, fresh, youthful and filled with wonderful people, treatments and products.” The aesthetic clinic offers a range of industryfavourite treatments, including HydraFacial, skin needling and IPL rejuvenation, as well as cosmetic injectables such as dermal fillers, anti-wrinkle treatment and PDO threads. But the St.Germain Signature Facial redefines flawless, glowing skin and offers a completely tailored treatment to target each and every client’s skin concerns. stgermainfacebody.com.au/

ODE Transformative Dermatology

Leading Australian dermatologist Dr Shyamalar Gunatheesan has opened ODE Transformative Dermatology in Melbourne’s inner-city suburb of Fitzroy. ODE is the first transformative dermatology practice of its kind in Australia to offer patients holistic, bespoke treatment solutions for wide-ranging dermatological conditions – a skin clinic without the clinical feel. “The vision that I had was very strong. Having worked in dermatology for 15 years, I knew what I wanted and what I don’t want,” Dr Gunatheesan says. While most patients come to ODE with a medical condition, they often stay for the aesthetic treatments on offer, whether it’s laser, BBL, or even body sculpting with BTL’s EmSculpt. The state of the art interior design is more akin to a luxury hotel than a dermatology clinic, with rich velvets and draped curtains, and the piece de resistance – a hanging garden in the decompression lounge, where patients get to relax with a glass of collagen water in hand. ODE aims to reinvent the client experience, and create something that hasn’t quite been done before. This could be the future of dermatology clinics. odedermatology.com.au

The Skin Bar

The third addition to owner and director Samantha Appel’s locations is The Skin Bar Double Bay. A small but inviting ‘green oasis’ designed by The Make Haus, the skin clinic features green floors and walls all over the reception area and two treatment rooms. Over the years, Appel has worked in skin clinics mastering a range of skin treatments including lasers, fraxels, IPL’s, needling devices and standard facials. After consistently seeing the amazing results skin needling achieves, Appel has now specialised in the treatment, creating bespoke treatments with different kinds of serums infused into the skin. The Skin Bar also offers LED, herbal facials and peels using Dr Spiller products, and cosmelan. Appel is a true believer that every skin is different and each client should have a personable program to help them achieve their own individual results. The Skin Bar’s other locations include Cronulla and Brookvale. theskinbar.com.au

Q-Tox

Q-Tox opened in Bondi Junction in October of last year, aiming to do things a little different in the injectables market. Offerings include injectables and threads, but practitioners are also trained to educate patients about plastic surgery procedures should they be interested, before referring them onto local Plastic Surgeons. Another point of difference for the new clinic, which was founded by Kian Moini (son of the founder of Laser Clinics Australia, Babak Moini), is their LED membership. For just $15/ week, clients can get unlimited use of the clinic’s Spectrum LED to treat their skin and indulge in some me-time with a guided meditation available while relaxing on the treatment bed. Not only can this membership be cancelled at any time, but members also get $16.50 in credit every week which they can redeem on products and treatments. The two main treatment rooms are divided by a sliding wall, giving Moini the chance to turn the clinic into one big space for training or events. q-tox.com.au

FEARLESSLY Failing

“Fearlessly failing is about how to grow through challenges and embrace the lessons so-called failure can teach us. It’s also about how to spot the signs leading you towards your life purpose, how to achieve lasting personal growth as well as what our body can teach us about finding true joy and lasting health.” -

Righto; let’s get straight to it. I think we fear failure, and that’s a natural reaction to have. But what if we turned that on its head and actually looked forward to failing? You see, I think it’s an opportunity to grow, to learn, to face our blind spots and to ultimately skill up. So what if we actually looked forward to failure instead of running away from it? What if failure was actually a gift and something awesome? Sure, it’s going to mean facing your fears and having the courage to take risks, but the reward on the other side of those risks (in my experience) is always worth it.

Here’s the thing; You’ve already failed (and probably more than once); and know this, you’re most defiantly going to fail again. Sounds brutal but it’s true. Same for me, I’ve failed way more than I’ve succeeded and I’m 100% going to fail loads more. And here’s the weird bit: I love that. You see, failure isn’t a bad thing; it’s a brilliant opportunity to learn, grow and ultimately better yourself to become happier,

more successful and understand who you really are, leading to a more fulfilled life. They say “the most successful people thrive on failure because it brings wisdom, we get very little wisdom from success”. That’s not to say don’t focus on success, it’s to say enjoy the lessons that show up on the road to success. I have been able to build my own strength and resilience through many, many failures. Powerful leaders and politicians love engaging in arguments and facing conflict because it helps them to find flaws in their own ideologies and psychology, how cool is that! I want to face my flaws, learn from them and become a better human.

Face your blind spots

One of my acting teachers said this; to me facing your blind spots takes courage, work and being ok with not having everything together. He would say “Lola, let yourself fail, let yourself fall. Be messy.” My perfectionist, slightly OCD brain really struggles with this, because being messy and falling is so uncomfortable, but it’s ultimately where growth and magic is.

Fear

Let’s talk about fear for a sec; all of us have felt afraid. It could be argued that we all have fear and have to face

The pandemic has encouraged many people to change careers or start a new chapter in their lives, which can be scary. Wellness expert Lola Berry explains why failing is part of the process.
40 | SPA+CLINIC

Simple ways you can work on your fear:

• Get perspective

• Sit with it, welcome it, feel it

• Have courage

• Build resilience

• See a therapist

• Meditate

• Yoga

• Biophilia (mother nature)

• Become resilient by understanding that it’s a part of life, but look for the good in the situation

• Let go of self doubt

• Imagine what you would do if failure wasn’t an option?

• Feel the fear and do it anyway, successful people, go-getters, dreamers all have that character trait of being fearless.

because I’m worried of upsetting people, I’ve fallen into the trap of becoming a people pleaser before. I sometimes forget that chasing dreams involves both risk and sacrifice. And making the tough call because you know it's what’s best for you, never ever apologise for following your heart and doing what feels right in your gut, they know best.

Acting and changing careers in your mid-thirties

This was a biggie for me. Four years ago I started acting training and I haven’t looked back, it inspires me and fills me up creatively. But it’s also scary to be constantly outside your comfort zone. I also have zero acting credits so getting auditions and finding an agent is hard, and it feels like I’m failing right from the get-go. And I know people don’t believe in me, which is totally fine.

What I do know is that I’m passionate about it and I believe in hard work. I’ve just got back from five months in LA and acting training in the mecca of acting and creative. I failed so much that I came to love it, and learn from every single stuff up. It made me realise that with failure comes growth. I had a yoga teacher who said “you’ve got to show up and suck before you can show up and shine.” And I believe it. So it’s about putting one foot in front of the other, learning from the trips and stumbles and finding the courage to chase the career and dreams that you love. There will absolutely be nay-sayers and dingos (that’s my word for the haters) – see them, and ignore them. Blinkers on, focus on your goals.

So many people live in fear and aren’t brave enough to chase their dreams. So they’ll talk down to you simply because you’re doing what they’re too scared to do. Truth

fears at one point or another, it’s just part of the human experience. But have you ever stopped to sit with fear and welcomed it in to see what’s really causing the fear, anxiety and worry? A guest on my podcast (Fearlessly Failing with Lola Berry) said that fear is as a result of us feeling out of control. Then to add on to that; my therapist refers to anxiety as a fear worse than death.

So let’s unpack it; understand why it even exits, after all, this feeling of fear stems back to the ice-age and it’s probably why we survived, adapted and evolved.

I invite you to come with me as we welcome fear; and let’s start to understand our fear a little. I’ll share with you some of the scary things that have happened to me, irrational fears I have and how they can often become wonderful gifts. And together, let’s learn from our fears.

Fear of judgement

For so many years I cared about what people thought of me. Even today I catch myself second guessing a choice

is, most people listen to their self doubts and fear and play it safe. Don’t let that be you, ever. Have the courage to chase your passions and work hard, every single day so that each day is a single step closer to your wildest dreams. Here’s the thing; you’re the only person who can turn your dreams into a reality and you’re the only person who can stop you.

We all feel fear; the best thing you can do is learn to understand it; know your triggers and know you’re not alone. It’s a primal mechanism that did a great job of helping to protect our ancestors. But when you’re feeling fear and it’s not warranted or it’s getting muddled up with love or excitement, know that it’s totally normal.

The bottom line on failure: You will fail, and that’s ok, in fact, it's good and very normal. Use it as an opportunity to learn and grow.

SKIN

MEMBERSHIPS ARE THE NEWBlack

Skin memberships are popping up everywhere. NADINE DILONG talks to two clinic owners about the advantages of making your clients commit.

addition, our client base is loyal with some clients coming to the clinic for 25 years. We saw memberships as a way of rewarding these loyal clients and giving back for their years of custom. We find that our clients are not necessarily looking for heavily discounted treatments, but they do appreciate good value and the flexibility of being able to pop in regularly for that personal and tailored approach.

saw memberships as a way of rewarding these loyal clients and giving back for their years of custom.”

What is the most popular one?

Re-launched in February 2019, Ultimate Skin and Body offers several memberships to their clients, including injectable ones. Owner and Director DEB FARNWORTH-WOOD explains why it works for them.

What made you introduce memberships to your clinic?

We introduced our memberships as a way of introducing our clients to a wide range of treatments. While we all know that no one treatment will fix every concern, many clients do not wander out of their comfort zone. By putting together packages we were able to demonstrate just how much better results are from combination treatments. In

Our two most popular memberships are our Essential Skin Membership and our Injectable Anti-Wrinkle Membership. Our skin membership is a general maintenance regimen that everyone needs regardless of their skin type or colour and it also acts as pre and post treatment care for any of our advanced treatments offerings. This membership includes Microdermabrasions, LED, and Fraction RF’s. Our injectable membership is great for keeping clients on track with their regular anti-wrinkle and helps spread the payment for the client.

What is the advantage of memberships from a business owners’ perspective?

I believe it generates a stronger bond between the client and the clinic. The clients come more regularly, and in doing so they see better results and are happier about their treatments. In turn this leads to more referrals and

Deb Farnworth-Wood
“We
42 | SPA+CLINIC

recommendations. We also find that the client average spend is higher with more add on sales on the day.

Do you find people make the most of their memberships?

We make it our goal to make sure the client gets the best value out of the package. Our goal is to get the best results which means we follow up the clients to make sure they are on task to achieve their best skin outcomes. Our members follow-up system alerts the team when our members have not been in for their monthly program and enables the

staff to reach out to them personally. Of course many people are often time poor, prefer to attend after hours and like to book online – all of which we can accommodate.

What percentage of your client base has booked into a membership?

We have been in business for over 25 years so our database is vast. Membership accounts for only 5% of our whole database but in real terms would apply to around 15% of our regular customers. Our membership clients are educated clients who want to look after their skin and have a genuine desire to see the best results.

When we have our clients on payment plans we often find we have less cancellations or no shows as the clients have already paid for their treatments. We see more commitment from them, they have a clear direction for their treatment plan and they often buy more retail at their appointments as they don’t have to outlay for treatment and products therefore enhancing their treatment, they see results quicker and our average dollar sale increases.

Black Diamond Clinic has two locations in the Hunter Valley and prides itself on offering completely customisable payment plans and memberships. Founder ASHLINN SMITH explains how it works.

Please explain the payment plan concept you offer at Black Diamond.

We offer several different options when it comes to payment plans. We have some generic 5+1 free offers, especially for our body treatments, that we run all year round. However, our most popular option is our ‘DIY’ payment plans. These are completely customisable to our clients, as we know not one size fits all.

With the recommendation from our clinicians we suggest what treatments would reach our client’s goals, the time frame etc, and design a treatment plan for them around that. This could be LED Facials weekly, combined with some other Facials once a month, brows every three weeks and lash lifts every six weeks for example..

After a lot of behind the scenes work we designed the mother of all spreadsheets! We enter the treatment info in and calculate the total price and payment plan pricing. The clients have the option to pay upfront and receive a larger saving. If they then chose to do a payment plan, which happens 98% of the time, they have the option to pick the duration of the package and how often the payments come out (weekly, fortnightly or monthly).

What do most clients decide to commit to?

We have such a wide variety of clients and celebrating individuality is one of our core values here at Black Diamond. Some clients like to commit to only a 3-month option while others love the idea of an entire year package. We have made set packages in the past that were set at three months, others six months or 12 months and we found we didn’t have one that was more popular than another. This was one of the reasons we decided to design our ‘DIY’ packages so our clients can pick the duration of their payment plan and package.

Do you think this is the future of beauty and aesthetic treatments, i.e. having a membership with an aesthetician just like you would with a gym?

100%! We know everyone wants easy, autonomous and more affordable options and we believe this is the future of our industry. We provide high end treatments that come with the price to match, as much as we would love to give all our clients amazing skin for free (wouldn’t we all), unfortunately we cannot, and we understand everyone is in different stages of life. We believe these options provide the solution to keep treatments more affordable, automated and easy!

What is the feedback from your clients like?

Our clients love the ease of having their treatments already paid for when they come into the clinic. They also love the option to pick the duration and payment frequency and not being shoved into a box of ‘x’ treatments for ‘$’ and thinking they are just another number or sale.

Slow Skincare AND THE SPA RENAISSANCE

Waterlily is paving the way towards the intersection of mindful spa experiences and science based skincare.

Imagine walking into your dream day spa. The tranquil space has been thoughtfully curated to tantalise your senses and induce calm. The warm greeting puts you immediately at ease. You are mindfully hosted through the treatment experience creating an assurance that holds space for connection, recovery and healing. The spa ritual you are about to experience is layered with opulent touch points and aromatic extra sprinkles that surprise and delight, and you surrender to deep relaxation.

Waterlily, an Australian skincare brand, helps day spas deliver this exquisite experience across Australia and New Zealand. Curious how? Let us explore below how Waterlily helps bring to life exquisite wellbeing experiences and truly glowing skin...

The beginnings of a handcrafted, slow skincare collection

Waterlily has been formulating Spa Rituals since 2004, including the professional Spa Collection which is trusted and used in over 150 luxury day spas and leading salons across Australia and New Zealand. From the very first active ingredient, Waterlily’s formulations reflect green science, creativity, transparency, purity and superiority in formulation.

The Waterlily story begins with the Founder and Formulator of the brand, Michelle Reeve. Her vision was to create proactive rituals of self-care that captured the values of intensity and integrity through fresh batched beauty and clean and green cosmeceuticals. In other words: Spa Wellness.

This idea was fuelled by a passion for natural medicine to reimagine skincare to focus on prevention, health and skin nutrition. Each product in the Waterlily Collection has been thoughtfully imagined and created, and is handcrafted in their Botanical Laboratory in Brisbane, Australia.

For fifteen years, Waterlily has been a pioneer and custodian of this philosophy with a heritage embracing pure skin nutrition. The holistic philosophy of the brand where mindfulness, slow skincare, eating beauty and naturopathic philosophies meet.

Behind the scenes of the Waterlily Botanical Laboratory

Let us take a closer look at Waterlily’s Botanical Laboratory where you will find ingredients are thoughtfully selected for their botanical nutrition with a paddock-to-plate philosophy. Thought and care is behind each carefully selected element of this brand’s product formulation.

The result of this unique, bespoke approach is an exquisite infusion of botanical actives with cutting edge cosmeceuticals to create an intensive, sensory and effective skincare solution which not only delivers a beautiful spa journey but elevates the self-care ritual for home. An aromatic skin solution that honours mind, body and soul with a passionate following of skincare and wellbeing advocates.

Working with a spa brand that values you

Care and kindness is reflected in each touchpoint of the Waterlily Spa Partner experience, from that first order placed, to business development and the tailored support offered. One of our valued Spa Partners, Luxury Spicers Retreats, have stocked Waterlily exclusively for over a decade. Lisa Tristram, Spa Manager at Spa Anise Tamarind of Spicers Retreats shares, “Working with the Waterlily team is innovative, beautiful and always keeping up with the

latest science in skin. It keeps our therapists passionate and invested in doing the best for our spa guests. The team has become like our extended family, their support is invaluable and so incredibly caring. If we need training, support for an event, beautiful imagery or collateral it is always available with a smile.”

Why care and connection matter

In a space where aesthetics has been the traditional model for beauty treatments, Waterlily’s mission is to lead a renewed health-focused renaissance in the spa and salon space. Just like it takes a village to do most things, health doesn’t happen in a vacuum. Research shows time and again that the key to health and longevity is community.

That is why Waterlily prioritises care, connection, support and collaboration. This is one of the many reasons why people choose to partner with the brand, as well as the 360° support offered to create and hold space for rituals that put touch, care and connection first.

“Care and connection matter. Firstly, they matter at work because we spend so much of our time, and ultimately our lives, working. For me, my time invested in work needs to be a personal reflection of the values I hold dear. That is kindness and compassion. The care we take to do things is important. The care for each other, who we work with and partner with, and the community that surrounds us all, are at the end of the day, the moments that make up our lives,” Michelle explains.

As for the care and connection delivered in Waterlily spa treatments, this is more than relaxation, as important as that is. The touch that is delivered during a massage or spa treatment lowers our stress hormones, including cortisol, and helps the body shift into rest and digest mode, which is integral for our wellbeing. This touch, paired with aromatherapy that is the cornerstone of the Waterlily formulations, is an experience unlike any other.

“We need touch and connection and community in our lives to feel truly well. Spa is absolutely key to this. What better way to invest in ourselves and our health than time in a spa. The community of spa wellness advocates making this happen for their guests, make me so grateful for what we do each and every day.”

For Michelle, creating skincare that delivers both results and a holistic wellness experience has been a key benchmark for all Waterlily formulations, underpinning the delivery of exceptional results for the skin as well as exquisite rituals that honour health.

“My hope is that one day our Day Spas will be the cathedrals of our health care experience.”

What’s next for Waterlily

Waterlily continues to grow, and imagining new ways to serve our partners continues to drive brand evolution. At the heart of the Waterlily team’s work is partnering with like-minded smart, kind, and passionate advocates of spa wellness.

INSTILLING CONFIDENCE THROUGH BODY CONTOURING

Who I Am

I have been a specialist GP for 30 years, working as a surgical assistant to a busy Sydney Plastic Surgeon during that time. Ever since I began my career in general practice, I have always wanted to provide my patients with the best possible outcomes and have therefore strived to constantly improve my skills and knowledge with further education. I have adopted the same approach in my cosmetic career too, so now I have a wide range of diplomas and certificates in obstetrics, gynaecology, sports medicine – and aesthetics.

Growing my treatment offering

However, I know that skills and knowledge are not enough to give my medical or cosmetic patients the results they want/need – the right tools and equipment are essential in both fields. I have seen the difference that advanced technology can make to patients’ lives, in general and cosmetic medicine, many times so I am always excited about new innovations.

Today I offer a wide range of advanced non-surgical aesthetic treatments at the clinic including injectables, thread lifts, HIFU, Tixel, PRP, Venus Tribella and IPL. I am however still always on the lookout for new treatments to meet the growing demands of today’s aesthetic patients, and recently added Venus Bliss treatments to the clinic’s menu. Early last year I became aware of the Venus Bliss body contouring device, and after researching it, decided that it would be a great adjunct to the clinic’s fat loss treatments.

Body contouring that works

The Bliss is a ‘2-in-1’ device that reduces fat on the abdomen and flanks as well as cellulite around the abdomen, buttocks and thighs. The fat reduction treatment, and the skin tightening/cellulite reduction treatment can be completed in the same session, or separately. The

Clinic

laser heats the water around the fat cells which then heats the fat and ultimately destroys it. It is remarkably comfortable with patients saying they only feel a warm and tingling sensation. A single treatment takes only 25 minutes and can be repeated four weeks later. The number of sessions is determined by the amount of body contouring the patient wants. We find that one to three sessions is ideal. Results are seen from four to six weeks and accelerated with the addition of weekly MP2 RF (multipolar pulsed magnetic and radio frequency) massage treatments to the targeted area.

Obviously, a Venus Bliss treatment won’t help obese patients lose large amounts of weight, but it is ideal for patients who have pockets of excess body fat that they want to get rid of and those who want to tighten their skin or reduce their cellulite. During their time with us, we continue to consult to assist in weight loss and lifestyle changes to ensure the best aesthetic and medical outcomes. In order to achieve great results quickly and to maintain them in the long term I like to look at the whole patient not just the bulge.

Making a difference

I think the Bliss, which has already proven its effectiveness and gained FDA approval, will make a big difference to such patients as they often can’t achieve the body-contouring results they want without extreme diet and exercise or surgery. Seeing the positive change in my patients both inside and out is what motivates me. It is wonderful to be able to at offer a body contouring treatment option that really works and is safe and comfortable too. I have already received very positive feedback from our first Bliss patients so I’m really looking forward to offering even more treatments this year. Venus Concept has been fantastic to deal with, and most importantly, the rep is always available; I receive great support.

LASER HAIR REMOVAL OF THE FUTURE

Who I Am

I’m known as a pioneer in the laser hair removal industry and have had my clinic for 18 years and continue to stay ahead in an extremely competitive industry with the latest most advanced and effective technology. Over the years I have expanded into advanced cosmetic skin treatments for face and body. I offer a unique approach to ageing and an alternative to going down the path of cosmetic injectables and surgery. I’m constantly evolving, researching and learning, to ensure that I am always ahead of the game.

I love what I do and do what I love, everyday! I have always believed that everyone deserves to feel beautiful and that’s what You By Sia provides. My clinic offers non-surgical and non-invasive anti-ageing treatments, body toning, Clinicals Cosmeceutical skincare and now the most advanced and powerful Laser Hair Removal technology world wide, the Soprano Titanium!

Laser hair removal of the future

When it comes to investing and upgrading from my existing technology for my clinic, it’s important to make sure that the device is able to eliminate and solve the current obstacles I have incurred. My previous laser hair removal device was great, however it came with some setbacks and limitations. I knew there had to be a better way and after six years of researching, I came across Alma Lasers Australia’s Soprano Titanium. Hence to say, I have never looked back and have managed to resolve all the previous hurdles I faced for the last 18 years.

Having been one of the first pioneers in the laser hair removal industry, I have seen progress with technology but based more on

an upgrade to the model of machine rather than an advancement in the technology using a different way. The Soprano Titanium has advanced laser hair removal into the future of how it should be done with no limitations, combined wavelengths; it is also faster and virtually pain free. It is suitable for all Fitzpatrick skin types as well as sun tanned and artificially tanned skin.

Financial advantages and continued support

As we know, most laser devices come with multiple consumables, yearly maintenance contracts and call out fees. The Soprano Titanium has no consumables, no yearly contracts and call outs are minimal as the device is user friendly and virtually indestructible. This is obviously a huge financial advantage to my previous laser hair removal devices I have used in the past.

I have to say that for 18 years, the company and technology I supported gave me no support or showed any loyalty to me as a long term customer. This, as a business owner, was very disheartening, frustrating and as far as I’m concerned, unacceptable. Alma Lasers Australia has been nothing but amazing in their customer service, support and constant high level of service and customer relations. It’s truly comforting and reassuring to know I’m a valued customer.

Since switching to using the Soprano Titanium laser hair removal device, my clients are loving it! From faster treatments, to less pain and being able to treat them all year round! I’m getting incredible feedback, and also from my therapists, too! It is truly the future of laser hair removal and benefits clients, therapists and myself as a business owner. I can’t recommend it enough!

SKIN TIGHTENING THE LUXE WAY

Who I Am

I started off with an education studying both business and law and have always had a keen eye for all things luxurious. I love beautiful real estate and architecture, designer fashion, contemporary art, and most importantly high-end spa holidays.

Keeping all the above in mind, I met my beautiful wife who, just like me, was a seasoned traveller of all things luxe. Together we were able to design and create Luxe Cosmetic Clinics with both of our style ideas and personal expectations of what a luxurious cosmetic clinic experience should be like. We were unable to find a medical aesthetic cosmetic clinic that appealed to both of our expectations, so by designing our own we were able to fulfill that dream. Our goals are to share our interpretation of a luxury cosmetic experience with others in the most ethical way possible.

A cosmetic clinic for everyone

Luxe Cosmetic Clinic is a clinic for everyone. My wife and I, and much of our staff come from Chinese heritage. We are very proud of our foundation, and we are all fluent English speakers. We have doctors and nurses from different backgrounds that work in our clinic also, and we like to consider ourselves a multicultural clinic with patients from all walks of life. At the end of the day we are all proud of the diversity of Australians.

Luxe Cosmetic Clinics offers a variety of premium services and treatments. We offer cosmetic injectables, such as toxin and filler, laser skin treatments, skin tightening, body contouring, and some minimally invasive surgical procedures carried out by our doctors. Luxe is a onestop shop for cosmetic treatments using the most recent and relevant devices available on the Australian market.

High patient satisfaction with Sofwave

We were the first clinic in Australia to purchase High Tech Medical’s new skin tightening Ultrasound device, Sofwave. We are always actively researching the latest and the greatest devices available to offer our patients for maximum results. For us it was clear we needed a device to complement our other services. Sofwave is a very comfortable treatment for patients. It has a built-in cooling technology called Sofcool, which makes the treatment virtually painless and the results are marvelous.

Our HCPs feel extremely confident using Sofwave. They know they can easily manage patient comfort and the results are instant and longlasting. Implementing Sofwave in our clinic has been one of the easiest treatments for us to add to our menu of treatments.

High Tech Medical has supported us quite a bit with promotional marketing, in-clinic marketing materials and with a significant amount of training- face to face and digital. Covid did test us quite a bit, but we were able to get some extra digital education which added immense value to the learning experience.

Sofwave is suitable for all ages and for both the male and female aesthetic. It has been easy for us to incorporate Sofwave amongst our clinic’s HCPs and our loyal patients. The results are first class and immediate, so our confidence when recommending it is super easy. Sofwave has added a profound amount of value to our business, we use it daily and our patient satisfaction is high. Nothing makes us happier than knowing our patients look good and feel good. This is the entire reason why we got into business.

Perfect for Mother’s Day, Waterlily’s new and innovative hand care product may just be what your retail offering needs.

A COMMUNITYDRIVEN SKINCARE HQ

Starting a new business? This new facility in Byron Bay is there to support wellness entrepreneurs.

Like many community and wellness stories, this one begins near Byron Bay, in the mystical foothills of the majestic Wollumbin. Meaning “cloud catcher,” this ancient volcano in the Byron hinterlands is where the light of the sun first touches Australia each day. It is in these hills that Theme Rains started a lab and began formulating the award-winning organic skincare and aromatherapy products of her company Synthesis Organics.

The aromatherapist, psychotherapist, herbalist and energy medicine practitioner was inspired by a calling to be a healing presence, eventually finding her way into expressing this through skincare, and now she wants to help other likeminded people.

THE IMPORTANCE OF COMMUNITY

From the very beginning, Theme offered her products – some of the first organic skincare in Australia – to her fellow therapist friends. Fast forward to today and the company’s sophisticated formulas are backed by industry professionals alongside partnerships with high-end wellness resorts and spas including Peninsula Hot Springs on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula and Sensaura Day Spa in Noosa among others.

Theme believes that good business should take its cues from nature.

“A healthy community functions like an ecosystem and Synthesis Organics is a part of that ecosystem. Like anything else in the business, we want to ensure that the quantity and quality of energy being put in, syncs with the energy going out. For instance, we are supported by local growers who provide us with amazing ingredients, and we in turn support them and their regenerative farming practices which helps ensure a sustainable future for all of us. The same goes for our partners and stockists. We provide sophisticated skincare products that support their customers, and we receive support from them.”

THE NEW ‘HEARTQUARTERS’

With such a business model, it comes as no surprise that a new multimillion dollar headquarters, fondly nicknamed ‘heartquarters’, the company is building in Byron Bay revolves around supporting the community.

The new HQ will feature a state-of-the-art lab, an essential oil distillery, distribution, training, administration, and workshop facilities. Theme, who is the Australian Ambassador for Women’s Entrepreneurship Day celebrated globally and in conjunction with

the United Nations, also plans to develop an entrepreneurial hub at the site with training, mentoring, and networking services for local entrepreneurs and those wanting to develop products in the natural beauty, food, health, and wellness sectors.

“We’re envisioning workshops, education, site tours and business mentoring support that will boost the overall production – and consumption of – certified organic and natural products. We believe in community over competition, so the HQ is an opportunity for us to give back and be a true healing presence.”

SUPPORTING SMALL BATCH PRODUCERS

The facilities will not only serve Synthesis Organics; it will also be a contract manufacturing and development hub for small scale businesses and startups who require Australian Certified Organic, Therapeutic Goods Administration and be Good Manufacturing Practice approved facilities for small batch product development, from testing bespoke formulations right through to ongoing production contracts.

Theme says that one of the barriers to entry for many entrants to the beauty and wellness industry is the large minimum order placements usually required by contract manufacturing facilities.

“You could call our small batch contract manufacturing capabilities ‘the share economy of organic production’, because we are opening our facilities to smaller players that usually don’t have the market share or the budget for those high upfront costs.”

Of receiving a $460,000 NSW Regional Job Creation grant in September to put towards the headquarters, Theme is naturally ecstatic.

“Having government support to create a manufacturing HQ that is Australian Certified Organic – the highest level of organic certification in Australia and TGA -– and open to small batch production and training for wellness professionals is truly groundbreaking. It is a reflection of the economic importance of wellness, the power of plant medicine and the necessity of eco-centric business practices.”

Synthesis Organics estimates that this will create 23 full time jobs while boosting the economy of the Northern Rivers region, and supporting many other skincare and wellness brands in the process. The new HQ is expected to open its doors around June 2022. Theme Rains is the Founder of Synthesis Organics synthesisorganics.com

Normalising MENOPAUSE

Do you customise treatment plans for your clients going through menopause? Nadine Dilong explains what you need to know.

Do you have many women in their 40s and 50s as part of your client base? Chances are, you do, but have you ever considered that they might be going through (peri-)menopause and might need a treatment plan that reflects this? New research by Flordis Femular has revealed that four out of five Australians don’t actually know what menopause is and how it can impact a woman’s life, and how this is affecting their wellbeing.

Whilst the average age of menopause is around 51 years, the secondary research conducted by Flordis Femular ® has actually shown that nearly half (48%) of Australian women who had been through menopause, experienced symptoms before the age of 45, which admittedly is much younger than people like to think it can occur.

With many misconceptions about menopause, and the fact that symptoms and timelines can vary considerably from person to person, leading Women’s Health and Reproduction Educator Natasha Andreadis believes this is a key reason many Australians are still so ‘menopause ignorant.’ Symptoms of menopause are different for everyone, but the drop in estrogen can be visible on women’s skin.

Symptoms of menopause

“When women enter perimenopause, this is accompanied by a noticeable drop in estrogen levels, which impacts many areas of our bodies including our moods, libido and even our skin. Once estrogen production slows, this can cause your skin (particularly on sensitive areas like the face) to easily dry out and thin. Some women may notice they seemingly look like they’ve aged more during menopause, as collagen production also reduces, leading to more visible signs of ageing like fine lines and wrinkles. Some women also may notice thinning hair, particularly around their scalp,” says Andreadis.

So what can or should aesthetic professionals do when treating menopausal skin and women’s overall wellbeing? Dr Peter Ryan is a GP and Cosmetic Injector

in Sydney’s South, and says many of his female patients confide in him when it comes to menopause.

“I am a middle aged doctor working in the cosmetic industry, helping with concerns about wrinkles and volume loss. My experience has taught me to look beyond why someone says they walk in the door. It’s also taught me to sometimes be direct about exploring those reasons. So if someone can trust me to poke needles and cannulas in their face, they sometimes trust me with many other fears and concerns they have about health, family and relationships. It’s still true; the most important tool we have in medicine are the ears and eyes. We need to use them wisely, and when a new patient presents in this (menopausal) age range, a good chat and history taking can open a can of worms. Every wrinkle can have a story!” says Dr Ryan.

“Therapies such as remedial massage may be of benefit, as it is deeply relaxing and can help relieve stress, which often exacerbates menopausal symptoms.”

Hormone Replacement Therapy

actually benefit from using a sauna to help decrease the severity of their hot flushes, as well as other menopausal symptoms like stress and fatigue,” explains Andreadis. “Using an infrared sauna in particular, helps the immune system to strengthen itself, by allowing nutrients and oxygen to flow more freely. It can also be extremely beneficial for skin, as it can help stimulate collagen production, leading to firmer, plumper skin.”

Treatments that may help with menopause symptoms:

✓ Hormone Replacement Therapy

✓ Remedial massage

✓ Acupressure

✓ Infrared sauna

✓ Dietary supplements

For those that confide in him about Menopause symptoms, he isn’t shy to suggest Hormone Replacement Therapy. “Hormone replacement therapy, HRT, is simply administering therapeutic substances to do the job of the declining endogenous hormones, from the age of about 42 onwards, sometimes earlier,” he explains. “With HRT the obvious possible side effects need to be discussed. The most talked about is breast cancer. There is an increased risk, especially with long term treatment. Without HRT, there is still a risk. Breast screening is essential. The risks need to be discussed with a patient and balanced with the risk of not using HRT. There are no guarantees. Early detection of breast cancer is available. From the outset family history needs to be considered. Other common side effects are breast pain, and irregular vaginal bleeding.”

Of course, not everyone wants HRT, so what else can aesthetic and wellness professionals offer women experiencing menopause symptoms to alleviate the stress and discomfort?

Spa and wellness therapies

“Body therapy can do so much for women physically and mentally during menopause,” says Andreadis. “Therapies such as remedial massage may be of benefit, as it is deeply relaxing and can help relieve stress, which often exacerbates menopausal symptoms. Some women also benefit from acupressure which helps stimulate the adrenal glands to regulate hormone production. However, other women can be very sensitive to touch during menopause, so I would always encourage women to find the best option for themselves.”

One of the most known and discussed symptoms of menopause is hot flushes, and sweating. While it may sound counterintuitive, “some women

Supplements to alleviate menopause symptoms

And lastly, think about health and wellbeing from the inside out, with certain supplements showing a relief of menopause symptoms. “Supplements that are designed to reduce stress, balance the mood, and assist with hot flush management are probably the most beneficial to women nervous about experiencing challenges due to menopause. Taking a naturally derived extract, such as Ze450 (which can be found in the Flordis Femular range) can help with minimising the effects of menopausal symptoms like hot flushes and mild anxiety. Other ingredients that may prove beneficial to help combat ageing are hyaluronic acid or collagen,” Andreadis concludes.

While there is no quick fix to help women during menopause, there are a lot of things aesthetic and wellness professionals can suggest to their clients in order to alleviate symptoms and the stress associated with menopause. It’s important to stay educated and, most of all, listen to each individual client’s needs.

AWARD-WINNING Massage

Catherine Tran offers a step-by-step guide to the awardwinning Aromachology Relaxing Massage by SPA L’OCCITANE.

The Aromachology Relaxing Massage by SPA L’OCCITANE was voted “Spa treatment of the year” in the recent Destination Deluxe Awards 2021. Meanwhile, in new clinical tests conducted by the COSNAT Institute, a consumer research centre in the South of France, the massage was conclusively shown to create a sense of wellbeing, decrease stress and promote feelings of happiness and relaxation. So what exactly makes the unique full body spa treatment so beneficial and effective?

This innovative and restorative full-body 60-minute treatment, inspired by the exquisite aromatic scents of Provence, draws upon the traditional techniques of Swedish effleurage, Chinese acupressure and Balinese massage to stimulate circulation and help alleviate tension, relieve stress and promote better sleep. The treatment can be enjoyed by both women and men, whatever their skin type, and is particularly beneficial for those with tight muscles, back pain, or who have difficulty falling or staying asleep.

The 3 types of massage used:

1. Effleurage: encourages relaxation, blood circulation and lymph flow

2. Petrissage: deep pressure to free up movement in tissue and muscles

3. Compression: Pushing down and holding pressure onto a muscle to promote relaxation

This head-to-toe, holistic massage is conducted in a series of stages, each of which focuses on a different part of the body, and involves a variety of massage techniques such as effleurage, petrissage and compression. The Aromachology specialist begins the treatment using soothing Cocon de Sérénité Relaxing Pillow Mist, whose delicate perfume promotes a feeling of relaxation and harmony. A welcoming ritual, during which a warm and aromatic blend of Aromachology essential oils is applied to the body, is guaranteed to appeal to all the senses. This particular stage concentrates essentially on the legs and upper body.

Aromachology Relaxing Massage Oil, whose unique properties make the skin smooth and silky, is used for the massage itself. The delicately perfumed oil, with its base of sweet almond oil from Provence, is a 100 per cent blend of pure essential oils that includes lavender, sweet orange and geranium flower. Regular L’OCCITANE customers will already be familiar with the unique benefits of the rich,

56 | SPA+CLINIC

natural and organic ingredients used in its extensive and luxurious product range.

With the client face down, this uniquely sensorial treatment begins with the therapist using effleurage (long, light massage strokes) on the shoulders, back, hips and neck to encourage the efficiency of the lymphatic system, increase blood circulation and prepare the muscles for more vigorous techniques. The therapist also performs a circular massage and applies alternate pressure to specific areas, as required.

During the next stage, the therapist skilfully continues to use a wide variety of techniques to ensure that every part of the body is treated: effleurage, petrissage, stroking with palms and stretching. The therapist continues with effleurage while the client lies on their back, this time concentrating on the front of the legs and then focusing on the abdomen and hands.

The next phase involves the upper body, arms and wrists. Again, effleurage is the technique of choice, with the therapist starting with the chest, and moving onto the neck and shoulders. During the ending ritual Aromatherapy Revitalising Essential Oil Blend is applied to the back and shoulders.

Finally, a soothing scalp massage is offered. A feeling of wellbeing courses through the whole body and leaves the client with a deep

feeling of contentment and mental and physical wellbeing.

The conclusive and positive findings by the COSNAT Institute in Marseille underline the evident benefits and power of a professionally-performed, handson, aromatic body treatment such as our Aromachology Relaxing Massage. The test protocols involved declarative and non-declarative methods of assessment and evaluation. The results of the declarative method of testing, by which subjects evaluated their perception of the massage via general and personalised questionnaires, revealed that massage was one of the five top wellbeing personal promoters. The other four cited by the volunteers included slowing down, taking time to de-stress, enjoying physical activity and being surrounded by those they cherished.

In the course of our work at SPA L’OCCITANE we continuously strive to offer unique wellbeing and sensorial experiences inspired by the natural beauty and fertile soil of Provence. Working collaboratively with our global portfolio of luxury five-star partner hotels, our therapists embrace traditional massage therapies with innovative wellbeing and holistic treatments with proven effectiveness. We enjoy an inclusive relationship with our hotel partners based on strong core values and trust.

WELLNESS INDUSTRY WORTH $7 TRILLION

While the wellness industry as a whole took a hit during the pandemic years, new research has found that it is set to bounce back bigger and better than ever. According to The Global Wellness Economy: Looking Beyond Covid report by the Global Wellness Institute, the wellness market has returned to pre-pandemic levels, currently valued at US$5 trillion and it is positioned for radical growth in the next four years.

“The wellness economy will grow to US$7 trillion in 2025, because the forces that have been driving it remain as powerful as ever: an expanding global middle class, an ageing population, and rising chronic disease,” said Katherine Johnston, GWI senior research fellow. “But the pandemic has brought new shifts and a global ‘values reset’: ‘Wellness’ now means far more than a facial or spin class,

ART DECO & AROMATHERAPY

Nadine Dilong experiences a deeply relaxing massage at The Langham.

There are few hotels in Sydney as iconic as The Langham. Tucked away in a quiet corner of The Rocks district overlooking Barangaroo, The Langham offers understated luxury, a bit of European flair, and modern, but classic design. Whenever I talk to someone about The Langham, two things come up: High Tea and 'that pool'. It is fair to say that the Langham’s spa, The Day Spa By Chuan, offers one of the most beautiful and recognisable pools in the country. With pale stone columns and a star-dappled sky ceiling, the 20-metre indoor heated pool is perfect for a few energising laps and one or two sneaky Instagram shots. The art deco inspired design make you feel like you’re at Jay Gatsby’s mansion, so coming for a swim and a steam room session alone would be worth a trip to the Langham, but today, I am here for an Aromatherapy massage.

The Day Spa by Chuan uses the essential oils by Aromatherapy Associates for its spa treatments, and after filling out my consultation form, my therapist Mina guides me through the candle lit hallway to my treatment room and asks me how stressed I am feeling at the moment. After admitting that my stress levels are at an

58 | SPA+CLINIC

all-time high (blame the busy preChristmas period), she shows me two oils that have deeply relaxing properties. I choose the ‘De-Stress Mind’ oil as it has a more subtle smell of Chamomile, Petitgrain and Frankincense.

The interior of the the spa is very dark and moody – perfect for a massage and to immerse myself in the treatment. I will try my hardest to forget about the world outside, I tell myself. Mina explains that this massage uses light to medium pressure, which is best to relax the body. I couldn’t agree more, having had hard pressure, deep tissue massages before, which are anything but relaxing (although you feel amazing afterwards).

Mina starts the massage on my legs, then my back with particular attention to my neck and shoulders, like I asked her during my consultation, and then my arms and hands. Before she asks me to turn around, my favourite part of any massage starts: the scalp massage. There is something

so soothing about having someone run their fingers through your hair and apply pressure to certain points on the head; I find it makes it almost impossible to think about anything else while a masseuse’s hands touch your scalp – it’s bliss!

Then, after I’ve almost fallen asleep, I turn onto my back and and enjoy more pressure along my neck and shoulders. A small towel covers my eyes, which is a little detail that makes any massage treatment more enjoyable. After 60 minutes, Mina wakes me from my deeply relaxed state and puts my slippers on my feet so I don’t slip due to the essential oils all over my body. Too short, I think, if only she could keep going.

After I am guided back to the relaxation lounge, Mina brings me a cucumber juice and herbal tea to nourish my body. Spa guests are allowed to use the Gatsby-esque pool and gym, and so I can’t help myself but sit by the sparkling aquamarine pool water for a while, trying to prolong the relaxed state I am in.

THE Future OF LIVING

It took a global pandemic for many of us to realise that the way we were living was not only unsustainable, but quite literally made us sick. Long days spent going from overcrowded trains to small offices with little to no natural light, only to spend the little time we might have at home exhausted in front of our TV. We had lost our connection to nature and also the connection to ourselves and what we really need in order to be well.

Lockdowns and the resulting time spent working from home has highlighted how important a decent work/ life balance really is. Spending time with friends and family, exercising regularly, as well as taking care of our mental health has made it to the top of our priority lists, so it’s no surprise that real estate is changing with us, although it is incredible to see just how much the wellness real estate sector is booming. The Global Wellness Institute’s (GWI) latest research report on the wellness real estate market shows powerful global growth in three short years: expanding from US$148 billion in 2017 to US$275 billion in 2020.

Australia ranks third in the list of wellness real estate markets globally, following closely behind the USA and China. In 2020, Australia’s wellness real estate market was worth US$16.5 billion, and it’s only expected to grow from here. So how is the term ‘wellness real estate’ defined? The GWI defines wellness real estate as the construction of residential and commercial/institutional properties (including office, hospital, mixed-use/multifamily, medical and leisure) that incorporate intentional wellness elements in their design, materials and building, as well as their amenities, services and/or programming.

There are two major wellness certification bodies, The Well Building Standard (WELL) and Fitwel, whose number

of wellness-certified building projects has grown ninefold in the last three years. As of August 2021, there were over 960 WELL and Fitwel certified projects globally – with another 1,431 projects in progress for certification (Fitwel) or precertified (WELL). During the pandemic, both organisations launched important new ratings standards to address disease transmission risks and an additional 7,684 properties earned those ratings.

Some criteria in order to be certified include how the building impacts the community, how it supports social equity for vulnerable populations, how it instills feelings of wellbeing (e.g. through clean, safe spaces that are connected to nature, and that promote social interaction), access to healthy food, and opportunities for increasing physical fitness.

The aspect of being connected to nature is one we see more and more of in Australia, with building designs including more green spaces, may it be on rooftops to create urban gardens, integrated in the walls of a building, or inside the building through hanging gardens, water features, and a multitude of indoor potted plants. ‘Biophilic design’, as it is called, specifically connects people with the diverse, complex natural world to improve their physical and mental wellbeing, and the physical and mental health benefits are endless. Time with nature combats depression and anxiety and mood disorder, improves sleep, improves happiness, boosts attention and creativity, and increases social interaction. Moreover, plants literally repair the environment by reducing CO2 and increasing oxygen levels, and can even help keep indoor air cleaner – not an unimportant aspect in these times of air-transmissible viruses.

With the wellness real estate market continuing to grow, why not take a look at your own business and see what you can do to install even more wellbeing into your space? It could be something as simple as more real plants as part of your decor and healthy food options for your staff. They will thank you for it.

The Wellness Real Estate sector is growing rapidly, but what exactly makes a building one that promotes wellbeing? Nadine Dilong investigates.

THE NEW SKINCARE WEAPON AGAINST ACNE IS HERE

Murad’s new Daily Clarifying Peel is achieving outstanding results.

Murad has released a new hero product for acne prone skin that might just become your patients’ favourite in no time. The Daily Clarifying Peel uses a Trifecta of ingredients to achieve outstanding results in as little as one week!

The magic ingredients? AHA (glycolic acid), BHA (salicylic acid) and retinoid. Together, they smooth texture, reduce congestion, and improve the look of pores. Recommended for most to be used nightly, the alcohol-free solution exfoliates and purges pore-clogging debris with three proven, imperfection-clearing ingredients for healthier-looking skin. Resurfacing AHA (glycolic acid) and retinoid help improve surface cell turnover, while BHA (salicylic acid) promotes clearer pores.

Senior Director of New Product Development for Murad, Kristen Robinson, says 71% of participants agreed they saw an improvement over four weeks of using The Daily Clarifying Peel, and it even reduces blackheads and whiteheads!

“Blemish prone skin produces more dead skin cells than is typical and these cells aren’t properly shed.  Dead cells remain stuck on the skin’s surface and within the follicle, creating a clogged pore leading to acne. Salicylic Acid is great for oily acne prone skins as it de-clogs congested pores while Vit A, a normalising vitamin helps regulate irregular cell shedding that’s common in acne-prone skin,” explains Robinson.

However, even patients that don’t suffer from severe acne can

benefit from this new product. “If you don’t suffer from acne/ breakouts, then I recommend using the Daily Clarifying Peel 2x per week as a light leave-on peel, or apply when needed to help prevent those occasional breakouts.  The formula has been designed for daily use for oily-acne prone skin types.”

Besides the hard-working ingredients, it’s also noteworthy what isn’t in the product, namely alcohol. “Typically in a format such as this, featuring salicylic acid in liquid form, alcohol as a solvent would apply – however our RND chemists were able to successfully formulate without it and include Salicylic Acid in both phases (the Daily Clarifying Peel is a bi-phasic formula).  As the product is for full face daily application, keeping it free from alcohol provides a positive connotation and experience for the customer,” explains Robinson.

So how does it fit into your clients’ skincare regime? “The Daily Clarifying Peel can be considered a treatment step on its own. It can be followed/layered with a moisturiser.  It does not replace Retinol Serums. While the formula does contain a form of retinol, Retinyl Proprionate, a gentle, yet effective derivative, this is not the product I would point consumers to, should they want to begin a specific retinol regimen. I would still confidently introduce them to our Retinol Youth Renewal range,” Robinson concludes.

And the results speak for themselves. Clearer, smoother skin in as little as one week. Your acne-prone patients are going to love it. For more information, visit murad.com.au

STARTING THEMYoung

Most children are introduced to their first skincare products when puberty hits and those pesky first pimples and congestion appear on what was once flawless, smooth ‘baby skin’. However, some children show skin concerns well before their teenage years begin, so should we treat children as young as seven years old?

Mothers Jacqui Millbank and Belinda Kurtz noticed their children’s skin started changing very early on, and created Petite Skin Co., a gentle skincare range specifically for children, in the Sunshine Coast.

“We started noticing blackheads, dryness and bumps and the odd pimple from when our children were around six or seven,” says Millbank. “Initially we put it down to the amount of dancing they were doing, or wearing dance makeup. But when we started talking to our friends, we realised that it wasn’t just our dance children that were experiencing these very mild early changes and some of our friends had even started their children on adult skincare routines.”

“These conversations with other parents prompted us to ask the question ‘why are our children NOT washing their faces’ particularly as we’re teaching them how to wash their bodies and hair and to brush their teeth. For some reason we weren’t paying attention to the skin on their faces and it was starting to show with the skin changes we were observing. We spoke to a number of experts that all agreed that starting a gentle skincare routine at this age to improve skin hygiene was a wonderful idea and that’s when Petite Skin Co. was born.”

Dermatologist Dr Shreya Andric agrees that introducing gentle products early on can help keep children’s skin healthy.

“It’s always a good idea to get into the habit of using a sunscreen daily and this should be started from an early age,” Dr Andric says. “It has been found that applying a daily moisturiser to the face and body minimises the chances of a child developing eczema. I would use a soap-free wash and a moisturiser daily from birth.”

Do children need skincare? Nadine Dilong gets to the bottom of how early is too early to treat kids’ skin.
62 | SPA+CLINIC
Petit Skin Co. Founders Jacqui Millbank and Belinda Kurtz

Petite Skin Co. came to be as the founder duo wasn’t convinced what was on the market was good enough for their children.

“The products that were recommended were very mild, but filled with chemicals. The packaging was also incredibly uninspiring. Natural brands that had lovely ingredients, had strong aromatherapy fragrances that our children didn’t like or were too heavy or oily. We looked at some of the gentler adult brands but as parents, couldn’t be confident that they didn’t contain ingredients that were going to be too harsh for their young skin. There just wasn’t anything that ticked all of our boxes as well as inspired our children to want to take care of their skin. We could see that there was so much that could be done in this space,” says Kurtz.

And when it comes to slightly older kids showing first signs of acne? Dr Andric says this may be the time to introduce more active ingredients. “Hormone changes around puberty often cause skin changes including acne, which occurs in up to 85% of teenagers. Puberty can happen anywhere from 10-16 years of age (sometimes sooner/later). Depending on its severity, it would be worthwhile

starting a cleanser containing salicylic acid or an antibacterial agent, as well as a treatment cream. One containing benzoyl peroxide may be helpful,” explains Dr Andric.

“We were both handed a tube of medicated acne wash at 14 and told to go wash our faces. Our parents didn’t do the wrong thing, but when we think back to those years, we still didn’t have all the tools and knowledge to properly take care of our skin,” Millbank says.

“The years in the lead up to the teens could definitely be used to educate and experiment with skincare, so when things do get a little more serious our children have a better understanding of correct cleansing techniques for example. In their pre-teens, our products work by improving overall skin health. Our formulations are gentle yet effective, so they balance the congested areas while protecting delicate skin.”

And while professional skin treatments should wait until there is an actual issue with the skin, there is no harm in something like Blue Light LED, says Dr Andric, which is anti-bacterial and can help with acne. As skin professionals, you can expect more and more younger clients to ask for your advice, so make sure you have the right tools and skincare available.

INGREDIENT YOU SHOULD KNOW: KOMBUCHKA™

You know the drink ‘Kombucha’, but have you heard of Kombuchka™?

Kombucha Exfoliation Power Toner, $58.00 sephora.com.au

Fresh Kombucha Cleansing Treatment, $66.00 sephora.com.au

Kombucha, aka fermented tea has become the drink-of-choice for many health conscious people due to its many health benefits thanks to high levels of antioxidants and probiotics –two things we know are extremely good for the skin, so it’s not all too surprising that an ingredient called Kombuchka can be found in several skincare products now. We dig a little deeper to see what exactly Kombuchka does as we asked Australian distributor of Sircuit Skin, Sarah Midgley, about the trend ingredient.

What is the difference between Kombucha and Kombuchka™?

Kombucha is the fermented tea that you drink and has been consumed for thousands of years. Not only does it appear to have the same health benefits as tea — it’s also rich in beneficial probiotics. Kombucha also contains antioxidants. Many people believe that kombucha helps treat all sorts of chronic health problems.

Kombuchka™ is listed as Saccharomyces/Xylinum Black Tea Ferment, Glycerin and Hydroxyethylcellulose. Kombuchka™ acts as a radiance promoter, skin smoothing, skin conditioning and lipofilling agent. It provides anti-glycation activity and has a re-densifying effect. It improves overall skin quality by enhancing skin smoothness, brightness, luster, radiance and colour. It is rich in organic acids and vitamins (group B) and is believed to confer longevity. Kombuchka™ is used in formulating face/neck skin care, anti-ageing and skin smoothing products.

I. CEE. U.+ Firming Anti-aging Eye Gel, $179.00 sircuitskin.com.au

Sircuit Addict+ Firming Anti-aging Serum, $169.00 sircuitskin.com.au

It is having a moment in skincare now, but we’ve know it’s an amazing ingredient for a long time and have had this in our ingredient portfolio since 2012 when we introduced it through the Made Better program.

How exactly does it improve the skin?

Because of its anti glycation activity, skin smoothing and plumping ability, it is the perfect choice for our anti-aging products.

Are there any live bacteria in the skincare?

Short answer is no. Here’s a little insight into why: Preservative packages deployed in our cosmetic product have one goal in mind; to destroy microorganisms within their proximity. Should the product contain “live” bacteria, whether intentional or unintentional, said product would meet the definition of adulterated by the FDA and would require remediation via market recall. Additionally, there was a large class action lawsuit seeking damages for misleading claims related to probiotics a year or so ago based on this principle alone. Therefore, we strongly advise caution whenever marketing to the benefits of live bacteria in product.

What skin type benefits the most from

Kombuchka™?

It is an excellent ingredient for just about anyone who is concerned with ageing, dry, dehydrated skin or wrinkled sagging skin.

BRANDS TO WATCH IN 2022

Thinking of introducing a new skincare line to your clinic? Here’s why WiQo and SkinMTX could be the right fit.

What kind of aesthetic business would your brand brand best be suited to?

Vivian Foo, SkinMTX Regional Training Manager: SkinMTX was designed for aesthetic businesses that aim to provide 360-degree solutions to patients. Our extensive range of in-clinic treatments complements aesthetic procedures and can be integrated as part of a pre-procedure and post-care regimen. To complete the postprocedure care, we also have a specially designed SkinMTX Dermat homecare range to maximise post-procedure results. Aesthetic practitioners can also prescribe from our wide range of targeted homecare solutions, allowing for flexibility to customise 360-degree skincare programs for different skin needs.

Dr Rossana Castellana, WiQo Founder: WiQo is a very versatile range. The WiQo Lifting and Brightening Programme can be used in aesthetic medical practices as WiQo is a great coadjuvant treatment, ideal for those aesthetic and medical clinics that already perform medical injectable treatments and doctors that use devices such as lasers, radiofrequency and ultrasound.

How big is the range and what kind of skin concerns does it treat?

VF: SkinMTX range is categorised by colours for easy identification. We have multiple solutions for every skin need, including anti-ageing & youth maintenance (orange), pigmentation concerns (blue), oily & blemish prone skin (green) as well as an extensive range of special care (purple) that encompasses sun protection, eyecare and specialised serums and creams harnessing the latest technologies in skincare. SkinMTX also developed their Dermat range, specially designed to be used as post-procedure care.

RC: Since I am a dermatologist and have been working in aesthetic medicine for 40 years, I thought we needed something innovative; this is how the WiQo brand was born. WiQo ONE carries a patent under my name for being an absolute novelty in skin rejuvenation through a non-invasive treatment.

WiQo cosmeceuticals have been developed to be used at home and they work as a finishing touch to the clinic treatment with WiQo ONE. I have designed these products so that they could be used on all skin types both as prevention and as anti-ageing treatment. After

analysing clinical evidence for specific skin problems and needs, I developed the WiQo products to deliver the correct solutions.

What is the ethos of the brand?

VF: We evaluate and use current technology and high quality ingredients that are proven to be effective, so the highest quality is assured. age element is mesoestetic’s completely personalised anti-ageing treatment using advanced medical-aesthetic technology. Formulated with epigenetic active ingredients, the range helps combat ageing from its origin as well as correct the visible effects of ageing. The range contains shikimic acid, which helps preserve youthful-looking skin; maslinic acid, which helps to increase the production of hyaluronic acid, elastin and proteoglycans, enhancing skin hydration, firmness and redensification; and finally, isoquercetin, that provides a potent anti-oxidant action, helping protect the skin from free radicals for a radiant glow.

The range is complemented by its diagnostic tool, age element diagnosis system, which has been developed as a support tool for the professional, as it analyses skin needs, lifestyle and conditions that the client wants to treat, alongside identifying the epigenetic variables that can affect the ageing process, for each individual. SUSTAINABLE PACKAGING Explained

air-less packaging to ensure the integrity of the ingredients would not be compromised over the shelf life of the product.

Airless beauty containers protect the formula and provide clean application, but the problem with many airless packs, is that they contain a double chamber, with the inner holding the product formulation and the outer where the label is. This means double the amount of plastic and carbon footprint.

Ihave an unwavering approach when it comes to sustainability and the environment. As a leader in the skincare industry, I have a responsibility to make a difference. That starts with looking at the impact that the packaging of skincare bottles has on our environment.

It is important to understand most beauty packaging is not kerbside recyclable, with much of it going into landfill. We must move towards a circular, eco-friendly business model for packaging, looking at the four R’s: Reduce, Re-use, Replace, Recycle.

A non-negotiable when I started my research into the packaging for the Sarah Hudson collection was the need for recycled packaging. Initially glass was my first choice, but after consulting with my consumers, many felt whilst it is beautiful, having a glass bottle in a bathroom would be subject to breakage, and travel would be heavy and cumbersome. I was also at risk of the pumps and dispensers compromising the integrity of the ingredients I wanted to use in the formulation.

After considerable research, I partnered with a company that is leading the way in global sustainably and safe beauty. My mission was ‘Luxe Sustainability without compromise’.

I wanted a premier brand and I sought out the best technology on the market to protect and preserve the advanced formulations.

Re-Use and Recycle

The packaging of the collections’ two cleansers and refillable inserts of the moisturisers and serums are made from the highest grade of recycled plastic and can be recycled again, making them circular and eco-friendly. Most importantly the formulation is not compromised or at risk of oxidation.

Recycled plastic is a sustainable alternative to virgin plastics; it reduces the consumption of raw materials and the production of waste. Even if the product is not recycled by the consumer, the packaging is made from recycled content and has a positive planet impact by not using virgin plastic.

Replace and Recycle with Refillable Solutions

As the formulations contain active science-based ingredients, a priority when working with my team of cosmetic chemists was to choose

All the serums and moisturisers in the Sarah Hudson collection have refill solutions to ensure sustainability, reduce waste and minimise the carbon footprint. When the consumer purchases the initial product, they purchase the whole product, outside pump cap and inner refill. Subsequently they only need to purchase the refill. The refillable inserts are easy to disassemble and make recycling easy for the consumer. This is a key factor as many consumers find refillable containers messy and therefore consumers do not recycle them.

Reduce

So many consumers are confused about the number of products they should be using and how to apply them. Having a customisable solution, that was quick and easy-to-understand was at the top of their feedback, with many of the products in my collection offering a twoin-one solution, reducing the packaging and carbon footprint.

I have a cleanser and exfoliant in one, instead of two separate products, a hydrating serum that replaces the need for using both hydrating toner and serum. The Gentle Cleanser can also be used to remove eye make-up, and the Vitamin C serum was formulated with the neck in mind.

Minimal labelling

One of the key considerations for the packaging, was not using plastic based labels that inhibit the recyclability of the product or are messy and hard for the consumer to remove.

I opted for the use of silk screen print which can be recycled; there is also minimal print on both the inner and outer chambers of the packaging, the recyclability and carbon footprint, always being frontof-mind. I incorporated high-tech elements of QR Codes, which link directly to the website. Many consumers are unable to read the small print on the labels, by directing them to the website, it connects the consumer with their skincare products.

Supercharged RESULTS

Why did you found Dermalist and what gap in the market does it fill?

Dermalist was born from the desire to formulate skincare products that perfectly address all the needs of both clients and therapists. At Dermalist we use a holistic approach to treating skin health that targets the underlying causative inflammation, whilst combining a patented scientific formulation of powerful actives, vitamins and peptides to treat the visible signs and symptoms of the concern.

It was also important to me (and it turns out the majority of skincare users) to use only the cleanest, purest ingredients, to be vegan, cruelty free and environmentally conscious. Clients also struggle with having to use a large multi-product skincare range, they want something powerful that is also easier to use, so a more advanced, condensed and concentrated skincare range was really the next step in skincare evolution.

How has the brand evolved since you started it?

Dermalist was created by listening to the needs of both skincare users and therapists. Listening to you and solving your problems is at the core of what we do. It is through our constant dialogue with therapists and business owners that we understood the need for a clinic only range, that is not available online. Being online protected means that clients can only physically purchase the new Dermalist Clinicals range in clinic. This allows for two things; firstly we were able to make our Clinicals formulas even more active and powerful because therapists are able to physically assess the skin, prescribe and educate clients on how to use the products safely and correctly, and secondly it means that clinics do not need to compete with online retailers for skincare sales.

How can practitioners incorporate the new Clinicals range?

The new Dermalist Clinicals range contains an increased percentage of ingredients, along with additional actives to really step up the results. The Clinicals range must be prescribed and thoroughly explained to clients and patients. Currently launching are AllSerum Clinical and Defy Clinical,

and the results are truly remarkable with visible improvements beginning after just one week of use. Your patients will be thoroughly impressed, which is key in establishing and maintaining trust, but also client compliance. If clients see fast results, they will stick with the skincare program that you have recommended.

We have clinical treatment protocols available, and an advanced cortisol reducing medi-facial incorporating the Dermalist range which detoxifies, de-stresses and reduces skin inflammation, whilst deeply removing dead skin cells, impurities and stimulating collagen production. Clients adore it and the results are instant!

What are the hero ingredients?

The real heroes are our scientifically advanced formulas which expertly and innovatively combine powerful and intelligent vitamins, peptides, and plant extracts. Using a holistic approach means that we do not use mono-therapy to treat skin concerns, in other words, we don’t believe that using one or two hero ingredients will give clients the most complete and dramatic results. Dermalist is a true multi-functional, multi-therapy range, we use a carefully designed combination of active ingredients to treat the skin globally.

As a base, we use the most stable and bio active form of vitamin c (sodium ascorbyl phosphate), with niacinamide, panthenol, squalane, hyaluronic acid, and powerful antioxidant plant extracts, all in clinically effective doses. Then we team that base with state of the art intelligent peptides, actives, and a star ingredient in our AllSerum called Neurophroline, which has unique biological capabilities to break down the cortisol production by skin cells, activating the release of a natural calming neuropeptide which acts on your mood, whilst visibly improving your skin tone, vitality and inflammation within just hours of application. The results speak for themselves!

What kind of aesthetic business is best suited for the Dermalist range?

We love working with aesthetic businesses that use a holistic multi-therapy approach to treating skin as our treatment philosophies will be perfectly aligned! Clinics specialising in advanced skin treatments, and results based clinics, with a focus on treating the underlying cause of skin concerns and exceeding client expectations. We are clinical and very progressive, but we are also stylish, luxe and love to delight our clients and therapists at every opportunity! For more information on Dermalist, visit dermalist.com

INNOVATION WITH SKIN PROFESSIONALS in Mind

Dermalogica is at the forefront of aesthetic trends with its latest round of innovations that go beyond skincare. The brand’s Senior Director of Global Professional Louis Chambert, talks us through Dermalogica’s new and

As Senior Head of Global Professional Innovation, anything that is going to help a skin therapist’s business and anything that can go on their service menu is my world, plus any professional product that is used in the treatment room. In the last few years, Dermalogica has put a lot of focus on the B2B aspect of the business, and now it is paying off. We see the success in our professional channels globally.

What clients want

The way we innovate is by looking at what our clients want, so we look, for example, at what professional advice they are looking for online; i.e. what is their behaviour on google. We try to capture every opportunity we see in the market. And we found that a lot of people were typing in ‘treatment for acne’ – very simple actually. And in fact, there are four concerns that are searched for more than anything else: acne, hyperpigmentation, ageing, and sensitivity.

So we knew that there was demand for treatments for these concerns, and because acne is by far the most searched concern (more than double the second one), we created our new treatment program, PRO Clear. We give the tools to the skin therapist to tailor the treatment depending what kind of acne the client presents. And then for the other concerns, we have PRO Bright, PRO Firm, and PRO Calm. And we encourage all our therapists to put that on their treatment menus, especially online, because it will help their SEO and therefore attract new clients. So we love promoting these services because we know it will help small business owners grow their clientele.

And of course we launched an education program along with this that teaches each of those services so it’s not just a

Dermalogica’s PRO Microneedling being performed

marketing facade, it’s about expertise. Every time a therapist wants to add these treatments to their menu, they can learn about them in our education program and elevate their expertise about that particular concern.

Enhancing microneedling results

Besides creating effective skincare and facial programs, we’re always thinking about how can we work with all the advancements in technology and devices we’ve seen lately, and how can we amplify results. In our research, we found that people googled ‘microneedling’ way more than ‘chemical

peel’. Just a few years ago, microneedling was something very niche, but now it has become almost mainstream, and we are fortunate to work with thousands of skin therapists that do microneedling every day and they have that expertise. So we looked at the science of microneedling, what concerns you can treat, and what products to infuse with microneedling to enhance results, and so we came up with PRO Microneedling.

We start with a chemical peel, and then use different depths of needles depending on what concern is targeted. And of course, it also matters what product you use to infuse the skin, and we are actually going to launch a new professional product, PRO Restore, which is the first of its kind. It’s a serum that includes actives that are going to intervene at the different phases of microneedling to reduce recovery time, because with skin needling, you tend to have quite a bit of downtime and sometimes your skin can still feel quite dry even after 10 days. So with this new product, we can reduce the downtime and therefore make microneedling attractive to more people. We encourage the clinics to sell microneedling packages of up to six treatments for best results, and one treatment per month.

Less downtime, fast results

The PRO Restore serum is great to use in combination with micro injury treatments, such as lasers, radio frequency, plasma, microneedling, chemical peels etc. We spoke with doctors and medical skin therapists and we asked them what they needed, and they always said “something that reduces downtime” so that’s when we started the journey to create PRO Restore about two years ago. You apply it before you do the procedure, let it sit for a few minutes, then wipe it off, then you do your procedure, and apply it afterwards again. Then you also give clients at-home vials to use in the days and weeks post-treatment, and it really reduces recovery time. Another new program we are going to launch later this year is PRO Fibroblast, which is using

plasma to tighten skin, and again we would use the PRO Restore serum in combination with that treatment.

At Dermalogica, we’re pushing things forward, we want to be at the forefront, and we are definitely focusing on all the medical treatment advancements that are happening, using the right skincare with device treatments. We want to push the boundaries and also look for what’s possible to take results to the next level. For example, you can needle acids into the skin safely and under certain circumstances, you get better results than with laser. People want visible results. And Dermalogica is here to facilitate this.

THE ONLY Platform YOU’LL NEED

Did you know that Cynosure’s TempSure can perform a multitude of treatments? Dr Keturah Hoffman explains why it’s her favourite device.

Multi-functional platforms tend to be the workhorse of any aesthetic clinic, but not every device offers as many treatment possibilities as Cynosure’s TempSure. From surgical cutting and coagulation to noninvasive skin tightening, cellulite reduction, body contouring and even vaginal rejuvenation, TempSure can do it!

Dr Keturah Hoffman from Perth based Restoration Clinic loves working with the device. “I don’t have any other machines that do so many things as TempSure, it’s really versatile,” she says.

“When TempSure came out, I went ‘Fantastic! I’ll take that’, and then, I found out about the women’s health application, so I was very keen to get that. If it can do skin tightening, fat destruction, skin surgery, blephs, mole removal, skin tags, milia, it will be the machine that I have in use most of the time.”

Having worked as a cosmetic doctor for many years, Dr Keturah has experienced a myriad of other devices, none of which impressed her as much as TempSure. “I did buy a laser and a Thermage at one point but managed to sell them when I could see that I wasn’t getting the value out of them.”

“We use the TempSure for many different things. My biggest excitement was to find out that we can do vaginal rejuvenation with it, because I had been thinking I was going to have to buy a standalone machine for that. We do quite a lot of treatment of vaginal rejuvenation for incontinence and vulvovaginal atrophy,” says Dr Keturah.

“The most useful skin tightening part is around the eyes because we have a lot of people thinking they need a blepharoplasty, and a lot of them don’t need one after they’ve had three to six treatments with the TempSure. We do a lot of full face skin tightening as well and pore size reduction treatments, which is one of the

few treatments you can use on the neck, which is quite a therapeutic challenge, but TempSure is comfortable and easy and we’re even treating décolletage lines and tightening skin on any part of the body including legs and abdomen and arms, so it’s in use, all the time.

“I realised how flexible the TempSure Envi part was and how you can treat every body part with it, and there are bigger body probes, with some of them having the hand pieces around them to do the massage at the same time, and then I found out there’s an even bigger, 60mm probe to do the abdomen really quickly – that was really exciting.”

Having the ability to go from surgical to nonsurgical with the TempSure makes it a great first multifunctional device for people starting out in the industry, which is something Dr Keturah agrees with.

“Absolutely, I think that TempSure would be the first machine I would recommend any new operator buys, because, even in general practice you can use it to do skin surgery, so someone who is transitioning from general practice to cosmetic medicine could make use of the medical aspects of the TempSure really effectively and completely justify the purchase simply for that and then adding in the skin tightening. It’s very safe, the machine is a smart machine and so the technician can safely do those treatments and be easily trained up for that.”

Technology
“TempSure was my first proper multifunctional machine purchase and I found it very difficult to justify buying any other machines.”

LET’S HEAR IT FOR THE Nurses!

Cosmetic nurses have become an integral part of aesthetics, so let’s take a closer look at the state of this rapidly growing part of the industry.

BROUGHT TO YOU BY
spaandclinic.com.au | 81

SUCCESS Story

Alex Pike is one of Australia’s best known cosmetic nurses. Nadine Dilong chats to the model and injector about her career journey.

How did you start out in the aesthetics industry?

Iwas 21 years working at Cabrini Hospital in the year 2000 as a Registered Nurse Division 2, and I was an employee/casual on the Nurse bank staff. I would kept getting rostered onto the Plastic Surgery Ward, and I absolutely loved Plastic Surgery nursing. Abdominoplasty, Facelifts, Blepheroplasty, Rhinoplasty – the surgical work was of a very high standard. I felt like I had found my place in nursing, almost my calling. I was also at this time working as a part-time model in Melbourne; aesthetics and appearance had always been at the forefront of the fashion world, too.

I stayed working at Cabrini for a three-year period whilst

I was finishing my Bachelor Degree in nursing. Just before I was to be married, one of the Plastic Surgeons at Cabrini mentioned to me that he felt I should have my Glabellar treated for my “big day”. The anti-wrinkle treatment was very successful, I was vey impressed by the results and fascinated by the possibilities of non-surgical treatment. I also all of a sudden had a slight edge on other models as my skin was improved and I looked fresh.

After graduation I had made the decision to try and find a way to be trained in injectables. I applied for a nursing position in 2003 with a Cosmetic Surgeon in Melbourne and was trained in all anti-wrinkle treatments. I stayed here for one year and in 2004 I got my dream job with world renowned Plastic Surgeon Dr Bryan Mendelson.

MEDI

Cosmetic nurse, clinic owner, and model Alex Pike

Do you think every nurse should train under a Plastic Surgeon?

I believe the advantage I had working for Dr Mendelson was being exposed to excellence. Everything in his practice was about the attention to details; the tone, the aromas of fresh cut flowers. I can say with all honesty that my experience in his practice shaped my whole career.

I had previously had nearly four years' experience in Plastic Surgery nursing before I even picked up a needle and I was most certainly up for the challenge. I have a great understanding of Plastic Surgery procedures and firmly believe surgery has its place. Non-surgical options are wonderful, yet they can be limiting. I think my understanding of aesthetics as a ‘whole picture’ and not just a small frame has allowed me to excel in my work. I believe having clinical experience in a hospital setting or day surgery setting is very beneficial for nurses and would only enhance them as injectors.

When did you open your first clinic and what was that experience like?

I opened my first clinic in 2011. I started with three vials of anti-wrinkle injections and a telephone. There were some quiet days. I would cold call people, do letter drops. My business partner at the time did not have much faith it would last. As a model I have always been exposed to marketing so I began my Instagram account, had a good website made. I also had some polished TVC’s made in Melbourne and began a campaign marketing the clinic to surrounding regions like Wagga, Wangaratta and all of a sudden word began to spread and revenue increased. I attended every educational opportunity, conference, I travelled far and wide to learn from the best. My second clinic opened in Toorak, Melbourne in 2017.

How has the job of a Cosmetic Nurse changed within the last 10 years?

It has changed as Cosmetic Nurses are now business owners. This is a path very different to clinical training. I joined a Business Syndicate in the United States in 2019 and learned a new skill set, which has very much been a positive in running the business. It has also changed because the products we are working with are more advanced. The techniques have improved and we have so much more education.

Do you feel the need to compete with other nurses?

Every industry has competition. I think it’s healthy. I really like to mentor younger nurses. I recently mentored a young nurse from Bendigo, and helping others get better in their

craft is a positive for all. We want to encourage a high standard of practice in our industry, the very reason I joined the Board of the Cosmetic Nurses Association, to help nurses have access to materials and support to ensure safety, ongoing learning and improvement.

When I started my career as a young Cosmetic Nurse in my twenties – I am 44 now – I had every door slammed in my face. I didn’t take no for an answer. I kept trying, I made my own place at the table. I approached colleagues (they didn’t know me) at conferences, I flew all over the world and knocked on the doors of clinics in London, LA, Istanbul, St Louis and asked politely for even an hour of their time to maybe pick up some nice feature in their waiting room, or hear the delicate way they are during the consultation process to see/hear how their reception staff talk to their patients. Learning is essential to grow. Helping others is a good motto to live by. As an industry it’s important to support each other.

Is there room for both doctor and nurse injectors in the industry?

There will always be competition within any type of business and the cosmetic industry is no exception. Research shows that only 8-10% of the Australian population currently access cosmetic injectables with this number rapidly growing each year. Without nurses, who take up 80% of the workload, there simply would not be enough injectors to meet market demand. So yes, there certainly is enough room for both doctors and nurses in the industry.

I believe having clinical experience in a hospital setting or day surgery setting is very beneficial for nurses and would only enhance them as injectors.

GOING YOUR OWN WAY

When did you first think about opening your own clinic and what made you actually do it?

It was always an idea in the back of my mind when I started injecting. I always visualised what I wanted my clinic to look like, but it wasn’t until I wanted to design an aftercare product and found out that someone I knew had already done it. I shut that idea down and focused properly on opening a clinic. I was literally looking at commercial real estate almost every day to see what was available where I envisioned myself in, and then this place popped up and it was exactly what I had imagined.

What ‘skills’ would you say someone needs in order to run their own business?

Determination because if you don’t want to put the work in, it’s hard. The reality of not knowing how much money you will make can turn some people the other way.

What was the whole process like, from finding the right real estate, the build, and hiring a team?

There were a lot of learning curves, I scoped commercial real estate for a while till I found something that was perfect. There are so many things I'd do differently but I think the first build will always be the hardest. I was lucky to have my dad help with the process. We have experience with renovating and building houses so we had that under our belt. He helped with coordinating and I could not have done it without him.

Many cosmetic nurses dream of opening their own clinic one day. RN Jacinta OritiWoolley did just that last year and tells us about her experience.

What were some challenges you didn’t see coming and how did you overcome them?

COVID was a big spanner! Especially the second lockdown as I had only been open for two days. I guess having to maintain the mentality that we’d open up again. I built my clientele over five years so definitely knowing I would have clients when my doors opened made a big difference.

Do you regret anything or would you do things differently?

I don’t regret anything but next time I would like to be more involved and more hands-on through the building process. For this build I needed to work at the same time so I wasn’t able to be here as much.

How was opening day?

It was great and very emotional! I did a little happy cry on my way home. The only thing I’m waiting on now is for my family to come down and check it out.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of working at your own clinic VS renting a room at someone else’s clinic?

There are many pros and cons but working for someone is low risk whereas owning your own opposes a much higher risk. I waited till I was ready to support myself and there was virtually minimal risk. I know that I’m inherently more anxious so doing something before I was ready would not have been right.

What is your advice for cosmetic nurses who want to start their own clinics?

Success doesn’t happen overnight! It’s important to put in the hard yards beforehand and most importantly – don’t skip steps. Also, just remember that everyone’s timeline is different. You need to listen to yourself and what’s best for YOU.

THE Safety MOVEMENT

AMET Founders Bronwyn Granata and Elena Currie are experienced Aesthetic Registered Nurses with extensive local and global commercial sales and training experience. Having each worked in private clinics and also with leading pharmaceutical and device companies, both Bronwyn and Elena knew first-hand the enormous unmet industry need for unbiased and evidence based aesthetic safety education and adverse event support. With their extensive industry insight and understanding of both practitioner and patient needs, they teamed up to create and launch AMET in early 2021.

Complication prevention and management is by far the greatest unmet need in global aesthetics. Many treatment complications that arise are avoidable, however even the most experienced of aesthetic health care practitioner will still encounter adverse events. For this reason, AMET has established an unbiased Aesthetic Complication Advisory Panel, to ensure there is a more structured framework for complication management based on current and emerging evidence.

In addition to this, AMET has also established ANZ’s first Ocular Complication Support team as well as an extensive nationwide network of highly experienced industry experts comprising of plastic surgeons, dermatologist, ophthalmologists, radiologists, cosmetic physicians and nurse practitioners.

AMET’s vision is to raise aesthetic medicine safety standards and optimise patient outcomes through providing all aesthetic practitioners with 24/7 access to unbiased, evidence based aesthetic safety education and complication support.

Whilst adverse event management has been the primary focus of many training seminars and conferences, adverse event prevention and

knowledge is absolutely paramount to minimising treatment risk and raising industry safety standards.

Becoming an AMET member enables any registered health care practitioner to gain access to an educational platform dedicated to aesthetic safety. Aptly coined “The Safety Portal”, the members area includes advisory panel approved AE protocols, detailed anatomical resources, hyaluronidase training, anatomical safety guidelines, off-label information and guidelines, unbiased product information, product selection tables, consultation and body dysmorphic disorder support…and so much more!

The AMET team are also able to connect members to a nationwide network of industry experts who are willing and able to assist with complication management should a member request additional support. Facilitation for medical intervention is included within the membership, however specialists may charge additional fees for their time and resources which is dependent on the complexity of the case.

Despite many successful achievements within the first year, the long-term success and impact of AMET relies entirely on practitioner support. As an industry we need to normalise adverse events and reduce the fear surrounding them through empowering practitioners and sharing regular cases. We need to unite for the greater good and ensure we are all supporting each other in times of need. Statistically, most adverse events have excellent outcomes when managed well. Whilst we can do our utmost to prevent complications, in the end it is a numbers game, and when our time comes, we all need to feel confident and supported to achieve the best possible outcome for our patients.

WHY NURSES Love FRESH CLINICS

Fresh Clinics is a clinicin-a-box solution for nurses, doctors, dentists and clinic owners, helping cosmetics professionals around Australia to simplify their business and succeed.

Training and working side-by-side in a major teaching hospital in Sydney, ‘the Johns’, as they are lovingly called, realised they had more than a career path (and a name) in common – they shared a passion for people and a thirst for technology. The Johns started Fresh Clinics to make the practice of medicine easier, safer and more efficient.

Founded in 2018, Fresh Clinics’ goal was – and will always be – to help make life easier for cosmetic professionals. With a clear vision and strong values, The Johns worked to create a complete, custom software solution for doctors and nurses – and a ‘one-stop-shop’ for clinics.

THE SUSTAINABLE WAY TO DISPOSE OF SHARPS

It goes without saying cosmetic nurses create a lot of sharps waste, but thankfully there is now a way to dispose of it responsibly. Sustainable Salons is a unique social enterprise that specialises in collecting up to 95% of the salon – and now also clinic – bin and redirecting all material for reuse, recycling, and repurposing solutions.

Sustainable Salons members can now order the specialised, compliant sharps containers online and have them delivered direct to their clinic door, with full containers easily returned via the fortnightly collection or on-demand pick-up service as part of their Sustainable Salons membership. Each Sharps Container comes with a YES/NO instruction label to help staff safely and easily dispose of waste on the go, and a simple screw-top lid to tightly seal the container ready for collection.

The launch of the Sharps Collection Program comes after more than 12 months of research and development by the Sustainable Salons Innovations Team. Headed by Project Assistant Alex Kung, the team took action to solve this issue after feedback showed that sharps disposal was becoming a rising priority for beauty and dermal industry members.

“Sustainable Salons has existing recycling pathways for many waste items that come from beauty and dermal salons, however sharps can’t be recycled due to biological contamination,” explains Alex. “According

to Australian and New Zealand standards, they must be incinerated at specialist facilities.

“Our job was to deep-dive into these regulations and develop relationships with facilities that align with our sustainability values, create a safe and cost-effective collection process, source the best equipment for salon staff and depot handlers, and ensure we provide the necessary education at every step.”

As part of their research, Alex says they found little information and education about the effects of incorrectly disposing of sharps through domestic waste streams.

“The seriousness is often brushed aside, which puts people in harm’s way, including cleaners, waste collectors, waste processors and even bystanders. Also, when sharps end up in landfill, they take hundreds of years to break down, not to mention the biohazard hasn’t been eliminated before dumping them in the Earth.”

Currently, sharps disposal is largely inaccessible for small businesses, with little to no collection services available, and those that do exist often come at a prohibitive price point. Instead, a business must return full containers to a drop-off point or facility directly, making it a difficult process to manage especially during peak periods.

There are no more in-person returns with the Sustainable Salons Sharps Collection Program; the member simply follows the steps to add full containers to their regular fortnightly recyclables pick-up or on-demand service. sustainablesalons.org

TOGETHER WE AREStronger

Until recently, there was no representing body for cosmetic nurses in Australia, but in 2020, The Cosmetic Nurses Association (CNA) was established to serve as a collective voice for all cosmetic nurses who provide non-surgical cosmetic services in Australia. Its Advisory Committee consists of leading cosmetic nurses, doctors, and surgeons who assist in supporting and guiding CNA on delivery of its key functions, which include ongoing advocacy and work with state and federal governments to convey the thoughts, opinions, and ideas of cosmetic nurses; access to training

and support; and maintaining the highest level of standards within the cosmetic industry.

As a member of the CNA, cosmetic nurses are demonstrating their commitment to the field of cosmetic medicine and upholding certain standards of practice that aim to uphold patient safety during every treatment. The CNA strives to professionalise cosmetic nursing by making it a dedicated specialty within nursing that is recognised by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
