Welcome to the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts. We are honored to have you here to celebrate our commitment in bringing artistic and cultural excellence to all ages, interests and backgrounds.
The Kauffman Center is an organization with one overriding goal—to bring artists and audiences together. The soul of the Kauffman Center is a living tradition of great artists and extraordinary performances. It is a setting maximized for the special and shared needs of our local artists and their organizations. The Kauffman Center provides affordable access to stages and other facilities for performances, education and other activities.
A strong program of arts education is integral to our mission. Kansas City can and must nurture and educate its own artists, and the Center is solidly committed to participating in this vital endeavor.
Each of you has taken advantage of the opportunity to become personally involved by being here. We hope you will continue through future performances, activities, volunteer work and donations. This is a building for generations to come.

Join National Geographic photographer Michael Yamashita as he follows in the footsteps of Marco Polo, the greatest Western explorer of all time. On the 700th anniversary of this epic journey, we celebrate the man who inspired a bold new age of exploration and discovery, introducing the Eastern and Western hemispheres to each other through his stories of the cultures, arts and landscapes of the people he met and the places he visited. Experience Marco Polo’s 13th Century odyssey along the Silk Road, from Italy through Iraq, Iran and Afghanistan, all the way to China, and his epic voyage back across the South China Sea with stops in Indonesia, Sri Lanka and India.
Yamashita has shot for National Geographic for more than 30 years, combining his passions of travel and photography with his love of history and culture. An Asian Studies major at Wesleyan University and fluent in Japanese, Yamashita has followed his roots to become a Far East expert. In addition to his work throughout China, Japan, Korea and India, his work has taken him to six continents. Yamashita’s specialty has been in retracing the journeys of iconic explorers along their historic routes to illuminate their discoveries and help us understand the early roots of globalization. His work has been exhibited in Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, Italy, Germany and closer to home, at The Carter Center, LACMA and the Smithsonian National Gallery of Art. Along with two documentary feature films, Yamashita has published 16 books in multiple languages, including his latest, Shangri-La.

The Kauffman Center would like to congratulate and thank the Diamond Level volunteers who have contributed more than 2,500 volunteer service hours.
When I started volunteering at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, I had no idea how much I would love the whole experience! From the first usher training classes to reaching Diamond level, it has been a wonderful and rewarding time.
Getting to watch the performances was a big factor in volunteering. But I didn’t realize that it is not just the Symphony, Ballet and Opera. There is such a wide variety from touring Broadway shows, rock, pop and country bands, to solo artists, and the list goes on and on. And such a wide range of performances brings a wide range of patrons which you get to interact with.
But what surprised me the most is the other volunteers! Where else could you meet such a fantastic group of volunteers from every background, profession and life experience? They all have the “volunteer spirit” in their hearts and it shows! I have made so many good friends and look forward to making so many more!

EMERGENCY EVACUATION PROCEDURES
The Kauffman Center is equipped with advanced life-safety early alert systems. Each performance hall is designed with emergency exits in case of an evacuation. In the event of severe weather, shelter in place inside the hall, not in a lobby area, and await further instructions.
In the event of an emergency, the performance will be interrupted. Horns and strobes will sound. Emergency instructions will be delivered from the stage.
Please remain seated as staff use an appropriate amount of investigational time to verify the source of the alarm.* Should an evacuation be necessary, lighted red (Muriel Kauffman Theatre) and green (Helzberg Hall) exit signs will lead patrons to one of eight emergency exit paths.
Patrons who are not able to safely and comfortably navigate stairs should remain in the venue near one of the marked “Emergency Evacuation Assistance” areas. First responders will evacuate those requiring assistance immediately upon their arrival.
Elevators, primary entrances and the Brandmeyer Great Hall staircase are NOT used in the case of an emergency evacuation.

Dereck and Beverly Joubert : Filmmakers
Award-winning filmmakers, National Geographic Explorers-at-Large and wildlife conservationists Dereck and Beverly Joubert have been filming, researching and exploring wild Africa for more than 40 years to help safeguard large predators and other key wildlife species that determine the course of all conservation in Africa. On stage they show the interdependence of wildlife and wild places and the many clever and groundbreaking ways they have partnered with local communities to find a sustainable path to coexistence. Their films have received international recognition, including eight Emmy Awards, a Peabody Award, Wildscreen Panda Awards and a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Japan Wildlife Film Festival, to name but a few.
The Jouberts’ mission is the conservation and understanding of the large predators and other key wildlife species that determine the course of all conservation in Africa. The Jouberts are founders of Rhinos Without Borders, an initiative that has moved 87 rhinos from high poaching areas to safety. They also co-founded the Big Cats Initiative with National Geographic (now the Great Plains Big Cats Initiative, under the Jouberts’ leadership), which currently funds 150 projects in 28 countries.
The Jouberts have made over 40 films for National Geographic, published 14 books and half a dozen scientific papers and have written many articles for National Geographic magazine. Beverly Joubert is also an acclaimed photographer and her international exhibitions have further helped to raise awareness for the plight of big cats globally.
Their films have received international recognition with major accolades including eight Emmy awards, a Peabody award, Wildscreen Panda Awards and a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Japan Wildlife Film Festival, to name but a few. The Jouberts were also awarded the World Ecology Award alongside Prince Charles and Richard Leakey, and in 2009, they were inducted into the American Academy of Achievement with the likes of Archbishop Desmond Tutu. In 2011, Dereck and Beverly were honored with the Presidential Order of Meritorious Service by the former President of Botswana, for their work within the country. In the 2013 Jackson Hole Film Festival, Jouberts won the Outstanding Achievement Award. In 2014, Dereck and Beverly won the prestigious lifetime achievement award from the SAFTAs. They were recently awarded the 2021 Explorers Club Medal, the club’s highest honor, and were also inducted to the Explorers Club as Fellows.

Whether dangling from ropes thousands of feet up to document first ascents in interior Antarctica, storm chasing in Tornado Alley, scaling ancient giant Redwoods, or diving with wild alligators in the Florida Everglades, Keith Ladzinski goes to the extreme to capture the moment and share it with us. Journey to the farthest reaches of our planet in this sweeping look at nature and man.
Keith Ladzinski is a master of documenting the ends of the earth. An esteemed photographer, filmmaker and Emmy-nominated director, Keith is known for captivating imagery that explores the intersection of adventure, nature and conservation. He has dedicated his life to documenting the world’s most remote landscapes, from the icy realms of the Arctic to the towering peaks of the Himalayas. Celebrated as one of the most nimble nature, art and commercial storytellers working today, Keith brings unparalleled nuance, sensitivity and depth to his storytelling. Keith is the co-founder of Triage Creative and a founding member of the Sea Legacy Collective. He regularly works with household brands such as Adidas, Apple, Canon, Disney, Google, Nike, Red Bull and Toyota, and is a regular contributor to National Geographic.

Security Screening Policy
To ensure the safety and security of our guests, the Kauffman Center has implemented a security screening policy. Any persons and items entering the Kauffman Center are subject to screening. For more information visit kauffmancenter.org/policies.
Seating Policy
Patrons arriving late are seated at the discretion of the artist and house management.
Camera Policy
Use of photography equipment or recording devices is prohibited without written consent. By attending a Kauffman Center performance, patrons give their consent to be photographer or recorded by talent, venue or their contractors.
Cell Phones and Devices
As a courtesy, please silence and put away cell phones and other devices during the performance. If emergency calls are anticipated, please notify house management of your seating location. Emergency calls will be received at our security office, 816.994.7244

For lost articles, please contact our security office, 816.994.7244.
Refreshments
Concessions are available at most events. Food and beverages may not be taken inside Muriel Kauffman Theare or Helzberg Hall.
Coat Check
Complimentary coat check is available year round. Coat check is located near the restrooms on Level 2 just east of the ticket office.
Smoking
Smoking inside the Kauffman Center is strictly prohibited. Designated smoking areas can be found outside both the north and south entrances.

The Kauffman Center Ticket Office is open Monday through Thursday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Ticket Office holds additional phone hours on Saturday and Sunday from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. on performance days. Tickets are always available online at tickets.kauffmancenter.org. All purchases are non-refundable except in the case of a canceled event.
Please Don’t Leave Your Seat Empty
Donate your tickets for re-sale if you cannot attend a performance. Contact your point-ofpurchase organization at least 24 hours before the event to discuss your options.
Public Access Hours and Private Tours
The Kauffman Center generally maintains public access hours on Fridays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. during which visitors may explore Brandmeyer Great Hall. Additionally, private tours led by a trained guide can be scheduled at kauffmancenter.org/tours. Tours are approximately 60 minutes in length, are available with reservations and are dependent on the Kauffman Center’s schedule.

Patrons who would benefit from the use of a private, relaxing environment are invited to step into one of our two serenity rooms. These spaces offer comfortable seating and a monitor to view the live performance, plus sensory items, dimmable lights and an electrical wall outlet. Patrons may contact a staff member or volunteer to access this space.
Changing Tables & Family Restrooms
All family restrooms feature infant changing tables. The mezzanine family restroom features a changing table suitable for children or adults. Patrons needing a universal changing table or an additional private space to tend to medical needs should contact a staff member or volunteer for directions to the first aid office.
Sensory Kits
Patrons who would benefit from comforting sensory resources are invited to exchange an ID card for a sensory kit from coat check on the Plaza Lobby Level. These kits contain resources such as noise-reducing headphones, weighted lap pads and handheld sensory items.

Legacy Society members have made planned gifts to the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, helping the organization plan for the future.
Barbara and Doug Cusick became Kauffman Center supporters long before ground was broken for the building.
“We were inspired by the many ways the Kauffman family has shown its support for Kansas City,” said Doug, “and we wanted to do what we could for the new performing arts venue.” Barbara and Doug opened their home and their unique collection of antique automatic musical instruments for fund-raising events. They also made a generous capital gift, purchased a seat plaque in honor of his mother and contributed to the Jane Chu Arts Endowment.
Now Doug and Barbara have looked ahead by making the Kauffman Center the future recipient of a life insurance policy their family no longer needs. “It’s as easy as changing the beneficiary’s name on a whole life insurance policy,” Doug explained. “We see this as a legacy from our entire family, that makes the performing arts and a vibrant downtown available to our kids, grandkids and beyond.”
