IN MEMORIAM

This issue of Spirit Magazine is dedicated to Patricia A. Ireland.
Patti served Independence for 29 years, from 1979 through her retirement in 2008. Her many roles included teacher, lower school chair, assistant head of school, interim head of school, and head of school. Her sharp wit, humor, and love will be deeply missed.
She lived a rich and beautiful life and will live on in the memories and stories of all those she deeply impacted at Independence.

From the Head of School

Independence understands that the most effective learning occurs within the context of supportive relationships. The school provides the tools to help all students acquire and apply the knowledge and skills to understand and manage emotions, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions. Throughout the Indy experience, students gain the confidence to be successful at each stage of their development.
In this issue of Spirit, we focus on the importance of mindfulness and social-emotional learning. The school is dedicated to maximizing engagement and learning while focusing on the well-being of students. True to our mission of inspiring students to become independent, intellectually curious individuals, Independence has the supports and resources in place to ensure a positive learning environment for all children. In these pages you will find many examples of our talented faculty and staff advancing our students’ capacity for learning, leadership, and citizenship.
I hope you also enjoy our Annual Report on Philanthropy, a true celebration of our community’s generosity and emblematic of the strong partnership we have with parents, alumni and their families, grandparents, trustees, faculty, staff, corporate partners, foundations, and friends of Independence. The students are the ultimate beneficiaries of your financial support, and your participation is a powerful demonstration of your confidence in the school and commitment to ensuring its continued strength.
In partnership,

TIMOTHY P. COSTELLO HEAD OF SCHOOL
Strengthening Students
With new headlines almost every day raising alarms about the need to help young people balance life in a changing and challenging world, we turn to Independence experts for insights on steps the school is taking to help our children find balance and thrive.
A Global Concern
Twenty-three weeks and counting—that’s how long Jonathan Haidt’s influential book The Anxious Generation has been on the New York Times bestseller list. In the book, the author cites evidence of a concerning trend sweeping the Western world, with childhood and teenage anxiety climbing dramatically over the past two decades. Haidt also suggests a cause—a “rewiring” of childhood with the rise of smartphones and social media.
At Independence, our educators are keenly aware of these global trends. They also know that the school is strongly positioned to protect our students, with long-standing policies on technology in place and an array of programs and professional staff focused on student wellness. Together, the programs focus not only on dealing with various stressors but also on helping each student to grow in confidence, independence, and resilience.

in a Stressed-Out World
“At the same time,” notes Dr. Dahra Williams, consulting psychologist at Independence, “it would be foolish to think that our kids don’t face stress—or that Independence is somehow an island, shielded from forces in the wider culture. This is why we are always focusing on new ways to help our children thrive.”
Filling the Toolbox
The resources at Independence focused on student wellness are considerable, from the groundbreaking initiatives of CWILTM (The Center for Wellness, Innovation and Learning) to the Character Development Program with its strong focus on social and emotional learning to our K-8 mindfulness program as well as a health and wellness curriculum that now includes a substantive emphasis on mental health.
“Taken together, these programs and resources form a multidimensional network of support for each child,” says Parker Slaton, dean of student life.
Children who need help can also turn to highly qualified professionals like Williams and Slaton. “If a child is anxious, it is usually because they are uncertain about some kind of outcome, or they are worried about how negative that outcome will be and they feel like they will be unable to deal with it,”

Williams explains. “They might be thinking about the worst possible outcomes to a range of situations (e.g., my friend didn’t invite me over, or my 2-mile time is not where I want it to be, or my upcoming test is going to be brutal). We work to help them put things in perspective while validating their concerns.”
Strengthening Students in a Stressed-Out World
Slaton agrees, noting that one important lesson in the social and emotional learning curriculum is “gaining perspective on big problems versus little problems.” Starting at the early childhood level, this curriculum focuses, in ageappropriate ways, on helping children understand, express, and manage their emotions.
“When children are feeling overwhelmed with stress,” says Marea Kessler, art aide and mindfulness teacher, “we want them to be equipped with the tools to deal with that.” She says these range from breathing techniques to taking a “visual walk” through an imagined quiet meadow or forest.

“We want to fill their toolboxes with counterstrategies that work for each child in coping with the emotions so they don’t become problems,” Kessler explains. She sees enormous power and value in mindfulness, most simply described as “being present—right here, right now.” This experience is an antidote to anxiety, which sends the mind spinning into worrisome imagined futures—and to modern technology, which so often transports us away into virtual worlds.
“It also brings perspective,” Kessler points out. “What’s happening right now is just happening right now. It will pass.”
The Power of Independence
While Independence educators focus on helping kids build a set of coping skills, they are also doing something even more fundamental: helping them become strong, resilient individuals.
“Independence fosters a feeling of ‘I’m confident. I’m courageous. I’m capable,’” says Williams. “That means everything from giving students choices within the curriculum to giving them leadership experience. It’s all about putting them in charge and building a strong self-concept.”
Another important ingredient in this formula is time for independent play, especially outdoors. Nationwide, many kids today have far less chance for this kind of play—essential to their healthy development—than in generations past.
Dr. Williams has written about the benefits of unstructured play, which include building problem-solving skills, social skills, confidence, and resilience. “It’s so valuable that our kids, at all grade levels, have recess and so many opportunities for outdoor learning.”
Smartphones or Dumb?
When asked for words of wisdom for parents who might be concerned about anxiety, our educators all share strong cautions about technology—especially smartphones and social media.
“We know what time on these devices does,” says Slaton. “Kids lose themselves. And afterward, you see that post-phone crash, whether it was gaming or social media. These experiences are designed to be addictive. We need to protect kids.”
“There are good uses to this technology in the right doses,” adds Dr. Williams, “but so often the uses aren’t good and the doses aren’t right. Social media ‘likes’ and streaks are too powerful for developing brains to resist.”
As parents themselves, Slaton and Williams acknowledge the challenge of bucking the trend on smartphones and stress that each family must make their own best decisions. “But,” Slaton sums up, “the longer you can wait to introduce these devices, the better!”
Silver Linings
As part of a recent research project focusing on the school’s mindfulness studio, Dr. Williams employed a survey tool that measures children’s happiness.

“This is a widely used test with good benchmark data,” she says. “When I looked at our results, I was pleased to see that our kids at Independence reported a healthier quality of life than their peers in the population as a whole—very encouraging.”
She cites another source of encouragement as well: students’ willingness to share their feelings and to seek help when they need it. “Our kids feel empowered to practice mindfulness or to come see me or see Mrs. Slaton. They really use the resources we offer.”
“That openness and willingness,” agrees Kessler, “makes all the difference.”

Allaire Stritzinger ’07: “An Ultimate Dream”
It was a school trip to Washington, DC, while she was a middle schooler at Independence that first sparked Allaire’s interest in museums—an interest that ultimately led her to a position at the Smithsonian’s National Collections Program. “We oversee the collections management policies for all 23 of the Smithsonian museums,” she explains—museums holding more than 157 million objects, artifacts, and even living specimens. And yes, for someone in her field, the Smithsonian is “an ultimate dream.”
Allaire majored in history at the University of Delaware and then went on to The George Washington University, where she earned an M.A. in museum administration and nonprofit management.
Reflecting on her days at Independence, she says that the memorable Washington trip was just one of many highlights. “Independence encourages you to learn, grow, and experience new things, all in an atmosphere of trust and respect. It has meant so much for me to have had that experience.”

Brendan Balthis ’15: Mergers, Acquisitions, and More
As an associate in mergers and acquisitions at Tuck Advisers in Nashville, Brendan has the chance “to be an entrepreneur while helping entrepreneurs.” In addition to leading strategy and operations for the growing firm, his job is to guide the founders of start-ups in healthcare and other fields in finding buyers for their companies. For Brendan, it’s an opportunity to put a personal passion for healthcare to work while collaborating with visionary businesspeople.
Brendan first connected with Tuck as an intern while at Dartmouth College, where he graduated in 2023 as valedictorian with double majors in economics and mathematical biology. At Dartmouth he also ran cross country and track—continuing to pursue a passion with its roots in his days at Independence.
“If someone asks about the foundation of my success, it always goes back to Independence,” Brendan says, citing rigor and individual attention, a passion for learning, lasting friendships, and exceptional teachers and coaches. “I can’t say enough good things about the school.”

Kim Sterin ’03: Improving Education
“The many opportunities I had at Independence inspired me to become a teacher,” Kim says, “and to try to extend those kinds of opportunities to others.” It was a goal that led her to spend seven years teaching middle and high school English in Montgomery County, Maryland, at schools serving mainly Title I public school students. And it’s a goal that has now led her in a new career direction as an educational researcher advocating on policy.
Currently in a postdoctoral position at Drexel University’s School of Education, Kim conducts research focusing on issues such as equitable school funding and has just co-authored a book, Critical Conditions: Addressing Education Emergencies through Integrated Student Supports (Harvard University Press). In addition to her Ph.D. from Drexel, she holds a master’s from Johns Hopkins University and bachelor’s from the University of Maryland.
Remembering her time at Independence, Kim says, “We did so much hands-on, project-based learning, and research now shows the power of that approach. We learned the material and 21st-century skills like leadership, grit, collaboration, and creativity.”

Thank You, IPA

The Independence Parents’ Association (IPA) was founded during the school’s early years to provide essential programs and services to the Independence community. Today, all Indy parents are members of the IPA, fostering closer relationships among students, parents, faculty, and staff and further strengthening the Independence experience.
The IPA has raised thousands of dollars over the years through fundraising and outreach, supporting enhancements like field trips, speakers, programs, and yearbooks. Signature events include Fall Fest, family Bingo night, ice skating, a dodgeball tournament, and a lower school dance. Faculty and staff also receive special treats throughout the year as a show of appreciation.
A heartfelt thank you to the 2023-2024 IPA leadership team—Katie Grieco, Leslie Ferenz, Ian Farrell, Trupti Patel, and Jen Farabaugh—along with the many dedicated parent and grandparent volunteers who generously shared their time and talents to enrich our community.
