SUMMER CAMP 2020

DAY CAMP When: June 15-August 14 Grade Level: Grades 1-8 Time: 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. or 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. or 1:00-4:00 p.m. Cost: $320 (full day) or $160 (half day) Extended Day: 7:00-9:00 a.m. and 4:00-6:00 p.m. for a fee

TOT CAMP When: June 15-August 14 Grade Level: Preschool (age 3)-K Time: 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. or 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. or 1:00-4:00 p.m Cost: $280 (full day) or $140 (half day) Extended Day: 7:00-9:00 a.m. and 4:00-6:00 p.m. for a fee

Our Day Camp is based on a summer theme that we incorporate into each week of camp and many of our planned activities. Activities include team building and team challenges, arts & crafts, sports and games, drama and filmmaking, science, outdoor exploration, tennis, and recreational swimming. Our camp will provide an enriching, fun, and exceptional day, and our campers have plenty of opportunities to discover new talents, try new activities, and gain independence while building lasting friendships and fabulous memories.

Our Tot Camp brings the Day Camp experience to our youngest campers, preschool (age 3) through Kindergarten. Tot Camp is based on a summer theme that we incorporate into each week of camp and many of our planned activities. Our campers’ activities include arts & crafts, outdoor exploration, science experiments, imaginative play, movement, music, and splash pool time. Our camp will provide attendees an enriching, fun, and exceptional day. Please note that a reduced rate of $256 for full day and $128 for half day will be applied to the week of June 29July 2. This is due to the closure of our facility on Friday, July 3 in observance of Independence Day.

H Indy Exploratorium H CHESS MASTERS When: June 22-26 and/or July 27-31 Grade Level: K-Grade 8 Time: 1:00-4:00 p.m. Cost: $230 Instructor: Mr. Gregory Rogers, Founder and Coach of Chess Masters of DE Chess Masters of DE has been teaching chess in schools since 2008. It was founded at Pope John Paul II School by Coach Gregory Rogers. Since then, the club has expanded to several schools in New Castle County and Pennsylvania. Everyone recognizes the benefits of teaching chess to children and adolescents, making Chess Masters of DE thrive. Coach Greg understands how chess can assist youth to make good choices in and out of the classroom. His approach to teaching is always patience with dedication and commitment. Note: Campers may attend one or both weeks.

STORYBOOK KITCHEN When: June 22-26 Grade Level: Preschool (age 3)-Grade 2 Time: 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Cost: $255 Instructor: Miss McKenzie Walsh, Independence Extended Day Staff In this camp, children will bake and cook fun favorites related to the storybooks they’re reading. We will dive in to classic titles along with brand-new hits. Cooking along to stories will help spark a new love for reading. Campers must be potty-trained.

BACKYARD SUMMER GAMES (maximum 20 participants) When: July 6-10 Grade Level: Grades 5-8 Time: 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Cost: $230 Instructor: Mr. Dan Kitching, Independence Director of Bands Come for a week of fun in the sun at a relaxed pace, as you’re shown the ins and outs of wiffle ball, kickball, and other light outdoor sporting activities. Enjoy both friendly competition and camaraderie with your peers. UNDER THE SEA (maximum 20 participants) When: July 6-10 Grade Level: Preschool (age 3)-Grade 1 Time: 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Cost: $255 Instructor: Mrs. Laura Fallon, Independence World Language Teacher Fish, Turtles, and Sharks — Oh my! Does your child love the ocean? If so, this is the perfect camp! Campers will learn about all kinds of animals in the ocean and even create their own aquarium to bring home. Each day, they will read and sing about, create, and celebrate all things associated with the ocean. There’s no doubt that this camp will be a whale of a good time! Campers must be potty-trained. SAILING — NERYC (maximum 10 participants) When: July 13-24 Grade Level: Grades 3-8 Time: 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. Cost: $550 Learn to sail with U.S. Sailing-certified instructors in a safe environment. Campers will be provided transportation by van to North East River Yacht Club in North East, MD, for this unique experience. No previous sailing experience is required. Whether you are a beginner, intermediate, or advanced sailor, you will build the skills to navigate a sailboat and advance to higher levels. Don’t forget to pack your lunch, since you will be out on the water. Sailors must attend both weeks. Day Camp is available for Fridays, if needed.

SHIVER ME TIMBERS! When: July 20-24 Grade Level: Pre-K (age 4)-Grade 1 Time: 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Cost: $255 Instructors: Mrs. Jane Fouracre, Independence Early Childhood Teacher, and Mrs. Barb Scarpone, Independence Kindergarten Teacher Calling all explorers! Do you like adventure? Do you want to discover hidden treasure? Then let your imagination set sail during this fun-filled camp! Create your own ship to compete in a STEM challenge, explore which treasure sinks and floats, and follow a treasure map to discover hidden loot! You will sing songs, read stories, and complete crafts as you think like an explorer. Don’t forget your swimsuit - you may be asked to walk the plank! Campers must be potty-trained. GATHER AROUND THE CAMPFIRE When: August 3-7 Grade Level: Preschool (age 3)-Grade 3 Time: 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Cost: $255 Instructor: Miss McKenzie Walsh, Independence Extended Day Staff Come on over and gather around the imaginary campfire for a fun-filled week of camping. In this camp, we will be roasting s’mores, setting up tents, taking daily hikes on our 90-acre campus, making crafts, and enjoying many more fun activities. Campers must be potty-trained. GHOST HUNTING CAMP When: August 10-14 Grade Level: Grades 5-8 Time: 1:00-4:00 p.m. Cost: $255 Instructor: Mr. Kevin McDonald, Summer at Independence Director and Middle School English Teacher Let’s get metaphysical! Ghost Hunting Camp will take campers to some of the (supposedly) most haunted places in Delaware. First, we will research the stories behind these spooky places. Once there, we will observe and record any signs of our friends from the “other side.” Back at Indy, we will review our results and publish our findings. We might not prove or disprove anything, but it will be a lot of fun!

Calling all detectives! We have a mystery to solve, and we must find out “who done it” by working together all week analyzing clues. This team-building camp will teach participants how to work together, become leaders, and to think critically all while having a blast.

Get ready to rock! Campers will learn to play basic guitar, bass guitar, keyboard, and drums to classic rock songs, then show off their skills on stage at the end of the week. Instruments will be available, but campers are encouraged to bring their own guitars or bass if they own them. No prior musical experience necessary.

H Visual and Performing H Arts Camps CHILD DRAMA WORKSHOPS: THE VERY HUNGRY CATERPILLAR When: June 22-26 Grade Level: Preschool (age 3)-K Time: 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Cost: $299 Instructor: Child Drama Workshops This all-time children’s classic will take to the stage this summer with your children in the story! The ravenous caterpillar will eat his way through apples, sweets, and pizza as he grows and grows and grows. Allow your child to experience the magical metamorphosis on stage through our play-based drama reenactment. All plays include professional stage makeup, costume accessories, and a souvenir program. Campers must be potty-trained.

MY FIRST CAMP WITH STRINGS When: June 22-26 Grade Level: Grades 1-4 Time: 1:00-4:00 p.m. Cost: $255 Instructor: Mrs. Banu Fields, Independence Strings Instructor Come and get to know your favorite member of the strings family this summer! A violin, a viola, or maybe a cello! If you are a beginner, this week will be a great time to learn how to play a strings instrument. If you already know how to play, then polish off your technique and learn new music. Students are expected to bring their own instruments to class.

MUSIC AND STORIES (maximum 10 participants) When: June 29-July 2 Grade Level: Preschool (age 3)-K Time: 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Cost: $200 Instructor: Mrs. Banu Fields, Independence Strings Instructor Every story should have its own song, and that’s what this camp is all about! We will read stories with a wide range of themes and learn songs to accompany them. Campers will play percussion instruments, move with the music, and talk about each character in our stories. Join us for a week of music-making! Campers must be potty-trained. CHILD DRAMA WORKSHOPS: MR. POPPER’S PENGUINS — THE PLAY When: July 13-17 Grade Level: Preschool (age 3)-K Time: 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Cost: $299 Instructor: Child Drama Workshops Based on the children’s classic story, this stage production is rollicking good fun! Madcap comedy ensues when penguins multiply! Allow your child to beat the heat this summer in our chilly penguin play. The creative process is play based and improvisational to maintain spontaneity. All plays include stage makeup, costume accessories, and a souvenir program. Campers must be potty-trained.

13 COLONIES MUSICAL When: July 27-31 Grade Level: Grades 4-8 Time: 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Cost: $255 Instructor: Mrs. Kathy Walsh, Independence Fourth-Grade Teacher Hosted by George and Martha Washington, our musical uses catchy music and a good mix of humor and historical information to review early American history. Children actively participate and explore the art of musical theater in a safe, positive, and nurturing environment. All are guaranteed a role in this simple and fun one-week production. CHILD DRAMA WORKSHOPS: DR. DOLITTLE — IF I COULD TALK TO THE ANIMALS When: July 27-31 Grade Level: Grades 1-4 Time: 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. Cost: $375 Instructor: Child Drama Workshops Based on the classic children’s book, your child will learn to talk to the animals in Puddleby! Your child can become Dr. Dolittle, Pushme-Pullyou, the two-headed gazelle-unicorn, or Prince Bumpo. The adventures of Dr. Dolittle will take your child to England and Africa and to battle the pirates on the high seas of Somalia. This play includes a professional director, choreographer, and set-art! Stage makeup, costume accessories, and props are included.


MOCK TRIAL (maximum 14 participants) When: August 3-7 Grade Level: Grades 6-8 Time: 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Cost: $280 Instructor: Mr. Kevin McDonald, Summer at Independence Director and Middle School English Teacher Public speaking, acting, writing, problem solving, teamwork, and debate. These are only some of the skills students will learn while participating in Mock Trial. The Mock Trial Camp will take rising sixth through eighth graders step-by-step through the process of preparing a real court case from the opening statements to the closing arguments. Campers will learn vital skills to help them express themselves effectively and to work independently to accomplish their goals. This camp is ideal for students who are interested in being part of the very competitive high school Mock Trial league, as well as those who enjoy acting and debating and want to improve their public speaking skills. A live mock trial will be held on the final day of camp!

H Adventure Camps H ADVENTURE WEEK I (maximum 20 participants per week) When: June 15-19 Cost: $500 ADVENTURE WEEK II (maximum 20 participants per week) When: June 29-July 2 (closed Friday, July 3) Cost: $400 Grade Level: Grades 4-8 Time: 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. Instructor: Mrs. Heather Horsey, Independence Athletic Director Each day, rising fourth- through eighth-grade campers will embark on a new and exciting journey by leaving campus and heading out on field trips. Campers should come prepared for the scheduled activities. Details on each week will be announced as the camp approaches. Campers should bring their adventurous spirit and plan to have lots of fun! Due to high demand, campers are limited to one session of Adventure Week. Please note the reduced rate applied to Week II (June 29-July 2). H STEM Camps H MESSY MIXTURES (maximum 15 participants) When: June 15-19 Grade Level: Preschool (age 3)-K Time: 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Cost: $255 Instructor: Mrs. Jane Fouracre, Independence Early Childhood Teacher, and Mrs. Barb Scarpone, Independence Kindergarten Teacher LET’S GET MESSY!! Ooey, gooey, smooshy, slimy fun. This camp lets children make a mess…on purpose! During this hands-on camp, campers will learn how to make their own slime and goop from ingredients found in the home (with supervision, of course). We will even create a few messy snacks to eat during camp, so dress for the mess. Campers must be potty-trained.

SCIENCE EXPLORERS: MIX IT UP! (maximum 23 participants) When: July 6-10 Grade Level: Grades 2-7 Time: 9:00 a.m.-3:30 p.m. or 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. or 12:30-3:30 p.m. Cost: $475 (full day) or $310 (half day) Instructor: Science Explorers staff We’re doing a Club Rewind by taking our popular afterschool programs from this past year and turning them into a fun-filled, week-long camp with different themes each day, including slime, atomic art, popping chemistry, the science of sound, and oozy, odd, outrageous animals. In our half-day camp, we’ll mix up magnetic slime, get loud as we make thunder cups and musical chimes, investigate the anatomy of frogs, build spin art machines, blast off film canister rockets, and make yummy ice cream. Stay for the full day (or come for just the afternoon), and we’ll continue the fun as we make a tornado in a bottle, create bubble blowers, mix up even more slime, explore optical illusions and make sun prints, build our own instruments, and make fizzy bath poppers and fizzing CO2 reactions.


OCEANOGRAPHY (maximum 20 participants) When: July 27-31 Grade Level: Grades 5-8 Time: 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. Cost: $430 Instructor: Mrs. Heather Watt, Independence Lower School Science Teacher Oceanography Camp is designed to emphasize environmental discovery and exploration. This camp is offered to fifth- through eighth-grade students who are curious about the ocean and the world around them. This hands-on program seeks to raise awareness about marine environments and stimulate an interest in the sciences through a variety of fun and engaging activities such as snorkeling, salt marsh exploration, beach and island ecology, and ocean life studies. This camp also includes visits to a local aquarium, wildlife refuges, and of course…the beach!

SCIENCE EXPLORERS: GREATEST HITS (maximum 23 participants) When: July 27-31 Grade Level: Grades 2-7 Time: 9:00 a.m.-3:30 p.m. or 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. or 12:30-3:30 p.m. Cost: $475 (full day) or $310 (half day) Instructor: Science Explorers staff Science Explorers has compiled our favorite camp experiments into a week-long science extravaganza! In our half-day camp, you’ll dissect a shark, make groovy lava lamp test tubes, design a course for your own robot, mix up chemical reactions, erupt a volcano, and make chalkboard and fluffy slime! Stay for the full day (or come for just the afternoon), and you’ll build a solar oven and bake s’mores, create your own motorized invention, experiment in our acid and base lab, go digging for dinosaurs, and compete in a bristle-bot race. Get your mind in gear for a week of first-grade readiness activities. If you like games, this is the perfect camp for you! You will hone important skills as you play reading and math games designed for learning and fun. Each day will be filled with numerous projects and games to help you shake off the summer cobwebs on your brain. Exercise your brain muscle as you compete with your peers for each competition. The end-of-the-week “Brain Game Olympics� is sure to be the highlight of the camp.

Have you ever left a movie and found yourself unable to stop talking about it? At Young Critics Camp, your opinion matters! Campers from grades 5 through 8 will experience the entire journalistic process as they report on movies, restaurants, and a few other events that lend themselves to spreading the word. Campers will be guided through both written and on-screen reviews.


QUIZ BOWL When: July 20-24 Grade Level: Grades 5-8 Time: 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Cost: $255 Instructor: Mrs. Kathy Walsh, Independence Fourth-Grade Teacher Every day is a learning adventure! Work with teammates to answer scavenger-hunt questions about literature, science, history, geography, and fine arts, then prepare for the daily Quiz Bowl. At the end of the week, test your knowledge in the Quiz Bowl finals and help lead your team to victory! GRAMMAR CLINIC When: August 10-13 Grade Level: Grades 5-8 Time: 9:00-11:00 a.m. Cost: $180 Instructor: Independence English Department What’s summer without grammar? We thoroughly explore the eight parts of speech, the foundation of all grammar study. Students become more familiar with the functions of words and how they work together within a sentence.

H Sports Camps H BOYS’ BASKETBALL When: June 15-19 Grade Level: Grades 5-6 (from 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.); Grades 7-8 (from 1:00-4:00 p.m.) Cost: $205 Instructor: Mr. Braheim Wilson, Independence Boys’ Basketball Coach Mr. Wilson began coaching basketball at age 19 and has successfully coached many levels of the sport. Fundamental skills that will be addressed at this camp include shooting, dribbling, rebounding, and defense. FLAG FOOTBALL When: June 15-19 Grade Level: Grades 1-8 Time: 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Cost: $205 Instructor: Mr. Jay Lazar, Independence Tennis Coach and Middle School Math Teacher Flag Football Camp is back for a sixth year! This camp will teach all aspects of flag football, including basic formations, passing, receiving, defense, flag pulling, and small and large games. Mr. Lazar played organized football from age 3 until his senior year of high school, where he was an MVP running back and wide receiver.

Take part in some field hockey fun this summer! Mrs. Walch is a USA Field Hockey Level 1 Certified Coach and First State Fifth- and Sixth-Grade Recreational Coach in 2016-17. This past fall, she led Independence to an undefeated field hockey season. The camp will be focused on basic skill sets and may vary per age. All players must have shin guards, a mouth guard, and a field hockey stick. Facemasks recommended for grades 5-8.

The camp focuses on skill development and will include scrimmages, contests, fun games, and activities. Mr. Motta, the camp’s instructor, is a former Major League Lacrosse player and former University of Delaware assistant coach, as well as co-founder of Team 302 Lacrosse, an elite program for players in grades 2-11. Note: Boys’ Lacrosse requires full equipment. This camp does not run on Friday, July 10, so if you need coverage on that day, you will need to register for one day of Day Camp that week.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL When: July 13-17 Grade Level: Grades 5-8 Time: 1:00-4:00 p.m. Cost: $205 Instructor: Mrs. Terri Shockley, Independence Girls’ Basketball Coach and Fifth-Grade Teacher Coach Shockley just completed her fifth season as head girls’ basketball coach at Independence. She has coached all age levels in the CYM league, as well as the YMCA league, over the last 25 years. She believes that players need to be taught the fundamentals of the game, including shooting, dribbling, rebounding, and defense. This fun-filled week will be jam-packed with instruction and a variety of drills to improve each player’s confidence and love of basketball.
