A word from the editor Hello and welcome to the September edition of your free, local news magazine and business directory. What a summer season we’ve had! A combination of the Covid unlock and restrictions on foreign travel have given Ilfracombe a boost like never before. You might not realise it, but booking any accomodation in Ilfracombe - hotel, B&B, hostel, AirBnB, campsite, anything - has been basically impossible for several months now. A friend of mine recently had some building work done on their house by an out-of-area team and the closest place they could find to stay was Minehead, forcing them to travel an hour in and out each day. Similarly, many of the town’s restaurants have been booked solid throughout July and August. Madness! It’s been joyous to see so many people visiting the town and truly appreciating everything we have to offer. The seafront has been absolutely rammed with families enjoying a stroll, playing crazy golf, having a drink at one of our many wonderful pubs, eating fish and chips on the harbour and, of course, marveling at imposing figure of Verity. As locals, we take much of this for granted, but imagine

how fantastic our town must feel to those who have spent the past 18 months in high-rise apartment blocks or pokey city centre flats with no outside space? It’s no wonder so many people are moving to the area, they’ve finally realised what we’ve known all along. It’s also been great to see how the town has used this popularity and gone above and beyond to make the most of it. For example, Cllr Paul Crabb has fought hard to secure the funfair that has been resident on

5

the seafront throughout the summer. It’s been so heartwarming to see this hive of activity consistently attracting cheerful visitors and hopefully we can continue doing something along these lines for seasons to come. But for now, we’re into the annual season wind-down, a chance for those who have worked so hard to have a well-deserved rest. Enjoy it, you’ve earned it!

8 ilfracombe at the heart of £6.9m funding bid Ilfracombe is at the centre of a multi-million pound bid for Government ‘levelling up’ funding. North Devon Council is making a bid for a share of funding that helps areas invest in infrastructure improvements and regeneration of deprived town centres, despite the district being placed in the lowest priority category to receive the fund. The £4.8 billion Levelling Up fund is a joint initiative between HM Treasury, Department for Transport and the Department for Housing, Communities and Local Government and will be delivered through three annual ‘rounds’. The fund has been designed to help provide investment for areas where it will make the biggest difference, including “deprived towns and coastal communities”. The council was disappointed at Chancellor Rishi Sunak’s announcement that North Devon had been placed in the lowest priority category for funding. Despite this, a decision was taken by the council to pursue a funding bid. The council, MP Selaine Saxby and other key partners have put Ilfracombe at the heart of the bid due to the high levels of deprivation in the town and reliance on a seasonal low-wage economy.

The council says the district’s second largest town would benefit because its ageing infrastructure has lacked investment to upgrade or improve but a lot of existing work in prioritising needs, preparing project concepts and engagement with business, residents and stakeholders has already taken place. Lead Member for Economic Development and Regeneration, Councillor Malcolm Prowse says: “Ilfracombe is a wonderful town but it relies heavily on seasonal tourism, and there is a lot of deprivation in the town. A huge amount of work has gone into planning improvements for Ilfracombe, however we need funding and resources to make a real difference and turn the plans into reality. We wait with baited breath for the

outcome of our bid later this year.” The council is requesting £6.9m funding for the following proposed improvements: *The Seafront Masterplan to deliver sea defences, improved public realm, wayfinding scheme, equipped play and upgrade to existing recreational facilities, kiosks offering the opportunity for flexible and pop-up trading spaces, Capstone Hill walk improvements and viewing platform upgrades *Refurbishments within the Landmark Theatre and input of new technical equipment to allow a greater range of performances to take place. Developing the facility for an evening food and drink offer at the Landmark The Government will make announcements on successful bids in the autumn.

10 ilfracombe sea cadets set sail on t/s royalist Ilfracombe Sea Cadets enjoyed a day out on the water on the renowned T/S Royalist last month. Every year cadets get one opportunity to set sail, usually for a week, including racing in the Tall Ships race. However, with the pandemic meaning opportunities were not available last year, this year they had the chance to head out and practice their skills for a day at sea. Sailing from Plymouth Harbour, 10 cadets from Ilfracombe and Bideford, aged between 13-18, were able to implement everything they’ve learned during lockdown. Sea Cadets gives young people an experience that helps them grow into confident individuals through various activities from sailing, windsurfing and powerboating. But the Cadets also learn seafaring skills and qualifications that put them in great stead for their future careers. During lockdown, the Sea Cadets have continued their seamanship training via Zoom, with MP Selaine Saxby, Mayor Kit Leck, Cllrs Val Gates and Paul Crabb all joining the lessons on occasion. This opportunity to get out on the water is therefore extra special this year. PO Mack of Ilfracombe Sea Cadets said: “This has been

a great opportunity to get Cadets back offshore and show them what is available next year when Covid restrictions are hopefully lifted, showing teamwork, leadership and how to work as a team. This offer of taster days was an offer that could not be missed for our young people in the local community to show what Sea Cadets is all about on the flagship T/S Royalist.” Mayor of Ilfracombe, Kit Leck, said: “I’m proud to be able to say I met with

many Cadets on Zoom; you cannot fail to be impressed by their commitment to learning and acquiring new skills. Ilfracombe has a long seafaring tradition and a vibrant working harbour, so it’s exciting to hear that they are continuing to experience something unique that can be brought back to Ilfracombe. We should all be proud of our Sea Cadets and all the Officers and Parents connected with the corp for continuing the maritime tradition.”

12 damage caused to ilfracombe’s historic monument A volunteer who helps to look after the Iron Age Promontory Fort at Hillsborough has reported finding damage to this nationally important scheduled monument, which is protected by law. It is believed that the damage, which was discovered on Friday 16 July, was caused by metal detectorists. It is an offence to cause any damage to a scheduled monument including lighting fires, fly-tipping, metal detecting, digging or disturbing the ground in any way without a license from the Secretary of State. Leader of North Devon Council, Councillor David Worden, says “It is a shame to hear that one of North Devon’s most historic monuments has been damaged through the thoughtlessness of others. We have a dedicated group of volunteers who tend to this site regularly and help preserve it for all to enjoy. To see all their hard work disregarded in such a callous way is very sad indeed.” Charlotte Russell, Heritage at Risk Projects Officer for Historic England, says “Historic England are saddened to see this attack on the monument which is so well cared for by North Devon Council (NDC) and an

active group of keen volunteers. There has been so much positive community activity on the site recently and it is a great shame to see illegal damage caused by the thoughtless acts of an individual. Metal detectorists of this kind can remove scarce evidence for the dates and occupation of these sites, knowledge that should be preserved for everyone. Their digging often destroys ancient sites, cutting through

archaeological layers that should be preserved for the future. The holes they leave behind can lead to erosion, although in this case NDC will be able to promptly repair the site.” The crime has been reported to Historic England and the Police. Anyone with information, or who saw metal detectorists around the area, should contact the Police on 101 or email the Parks team at NDC. Reports will be treated in strictest confidence.

16 new app helps you discover great local businesses A new app to encourage people to continue supporting local businesses and show off the highlights of the area to potential visitors is to be launched in September in north Devon - and businesses will soon be contacted about being part of it. The Dscvr (pronounced ‘discover’) app is to be launched by both North Devon and Torridge councils, seizing on the enthusiasm shown by residents to support local businesses during the pandemic. The app showcases businesses, events and promotions in the area and is being rolled out in towns across the region for both locals and visitors. Both councils are asking local businesses to be aware they should expect to be contacted by the Dscvr team in the coming weeks with regards to featuring on the app for free. If in any doubt that the contact is genuine, they can speak to their local council or have a look at council websites to check. The app will help businesses to promote their offer, and is expected to drive more footfall into the area. It will enable locals and visitors to make the most of everything the region has to offer, from town centres to walking trails,

beaches to events. The Dscvr app will have the following features: * Local businesses can have their own page on the app to promote their business and highlight special offers, free of charge * It helps people find places to eat and things to do Each town has its own area on the app meaning it can be tailored to each individual town in North Devon and Torridge * It can identify people’s location so when they open the app, it will know where they are and will point them to the relevant town’s content but they will still be able to browse the other towns * Local events and cultural and leisure facilities are highlighted and promoted for free * It allows people to tailor

their feed to what they want to hear about * It will carry Covid safety messaging until it’s no longer needed * It can send out push notifications if there’s a message that needs to be got out quickly like a major road closure for example We know businesses are sometimes suspicious when they’re cold contacted, so we want to get the message out there that they should expect to hear from the team behind the app very soon. The Dscvr app is available on both android and IOS devices. More information is available on North Devon Council’s website at www.northdevon. gov.uk. The Dscvr app is expected to launch in the early autumn.

The view with COMBEBIRD

As the sun sets on another summer season in our beautiful home town, I thought this little stunner from Combebird was quite an apt image. I’ll admit the weather hasn’t been this perfect throughout the holidays, but overall we’ve been very lucky. A combination of the national unlock back in July and frequently changing (and very confusing) restrictions for those travelling abroad have seen staycation venues such as ours boom this year. Will this trend continue into 2022? I honestly don’t know. But I will say this, Ilfracombe has done everything it can to take advantage of its stunning beauty and popularity, and I’m certain that will continue!

32 holiday park wants to be hub of the community Ilfracombe Holiday Park, is going through a huge transformation. The current owners took over the running of the resort last summer, and have made sweeping changes to the apartments, including new beds throughout. The venue has been updated and modernised, with a brand new restaurant. This is just the beginning of a transformation that will take several years. One of the main priorities of the new style park is the building back of relations between the park and local people. General manager Natasha lives in Ilfracombe and has the drive and passion to move the park forward and build local relationships. All the staff are on board with the vision, the improvement to the park and its facilities are very much focused of making the park a hub of local activity. They have a large sports hall, soft play, pool, sauna, restaurant and bar, all open to locals. They have local swimming clubs already using the pool, and after school clubs starting in September. They have a crèche and children’s club for all during the summer, which has been very well supported. The park are also running events from September until May.

Richard Silver and international award nominee John Forster have put together an amazing series of events including Ilfracombe’s first Country Music Festival as well as bringing Wrestling, Boxing and Darts to Ilfracombe, They are also organising music festivals, locals weekends, an LGBT weekend, Halloween Ball

and Beer Festival. There will also be the excellent Legends of Rock weekend, which is always very popular. These are done with locals very much in mind. To show their support to the local community, the park also sponsoried the Round Table Birdman Event in August.
