But I can’t say I’m disappointed, I love the Winter transition - particularly in Ilfracombe where we host several fantastic events such as the Spooks and Sparks fireworks night and the plethora of festive fairs and fetes that allow us all to get into the Christmas mood and enjoy a warm glass of mulled wine with a chilly red nose. Worrying dog trend sparks ‘bark to school’ scheme

As the new school term begins, welfare chairity Dog’s Trust has reported a concerning spike in donations, with some families handing in dogs to rescue centres the moment their children return to school.

Last year, as the new school year commenced, on September 5 the charity received one of the highest number of calls on any one day of the year and were asked to rehome 220 dogs. This was twice the number of calls usually received on an average day.

It is also becoming clear to the charity some of these donations are being made due to the fact that sadly, a number of families clearly purchased a dog at the start of the summer holidays purely as a form of entertainment rather than to

Consequently, as the summer holidays come to an end and parents settle back into busy routines, Dog’s Trust Ilfracombe is appealing to owners to consider other, more creative solutions that may enable them to keep their dogs. One suggestion made by the charity is for owners to attend dog-training classes to help overcome any concerns or issues they may have with leaving their dog rather than simply getting rid of them.

Maria Wickes, Head of Dogs Trust Dog School, said: “Sadly it does seem to be a recurring trend that we see more dogs handed into us as soon as children go back to school.

“In many cases dogs are not equipped to deal with this change in routine and may start displaying undesirable behaviour. We hope that anyone struggling to control

their dog’s behaviour after the summer holidays will consider giving them up a last resort and instead send them “Bark to School” and sign up for training classes.

“In extreme cases we are finding people even buy dogs simply to keep their children occupied in the holidays.

Cockapoo Gus was handed in because his owners bought him to entertain the children during the summer holidays and then passed him to us for rehoming when the kids weren’t around anymore.

“Whilst the majority of dog owners regard their dogs as valued family members, it appears some may be using dogs as four-legged nannies over the holidays and disregarding them come September. We hope people will remember that a dog is for life and carefully consider this lifetime commitment.”

POLICE SLAM ‘SHAMEFUL’ behaviour

Police officers in Ilfracombe have taken to Faceook to condemn the behaviour of a member of the public after they were filmed and shouted at while helping with a medical emergency. Ilfracombe Police wrote on their Facebook page: “On Tuesday afternoon (August 25) officers from Ilfracombe Police Station were assisting a first responder in dealing with a medical incident on Ilfracombe High Street.

“Events such as this which occur in public places can be extremely stressful for patients and their close ones.

“Although everything that could be done was being done, and an ambulance was on route, one individual

Whilst we are open to being filmed, welcome open debate, and will try our utmost to make areas accessible

As you’ve probably guessed, this moody picture captured part of the action from last month’s Ilfracombe Triathlon, a short but tough event which attracted athletes from all over the country for the 500m sea swim, 27km bike ride and hilly 5km run. I happened to be driving around the area just before the early morning start and it was great to see the cove car park buzzing with wetsuit-clad competitors, despite the frankly average weather! Another great Ilfracombe event!

Nigel has been a well-known figure on the contemporary British and European folk scene since the mid-‘70s, and has lost none of his passion for the music, the environment and life generally.

More importantly though, Open Nights are about whoever comes along, with anyone and everyone having a chance to ‘sing, say or play’.

Anyone is welcome to come along, and although encouraged to participate, they won’t be pressurised to do so – you’ll be just as welcome if you just want to listen. There’s no admission fee, although the pot is passed around for contributions to the club’s expenses.

New to Shammick are our guest artists James Hickman & Dan Cassidy at our concert on Saturday 28th. James and Dan form a duo inspired by the traditions of both sides of the pond. Born in Shropshire, and raised on a diet of folk and bluegrass music through his dad, an avid bluegrass musician, James has been performing in sessions and folk clubs since he was thirteen.

After attending music college, he has lived and played in Ireland and Iceland before returning to England. Dan also came from a musical family,

taking up the violin at the age of ten, since when he has absorbed a broad spectrum of musical styles from classical and jazz, to country and rock.

Whilst touring professionally in the UK some years ago, Dan was introduced to the music of Shetland fiddler Aly Bain, sparking an interest in Celtic music, and the UK folk scene in general. As well as appearing on several recordings of his late sister, Eva Cassidy, Dan got together with James to perform throughout the UK, and more recently they have incorporated new original material into their sets, as well as the traditional music of Britain and America. With James’ emotive, soaring vocals and driving guitar complemented

by Dan’s ingenious and virtuosic fiddling, their performance is bursting with humour, heartbreak and excitement – a dynamic and unforgettable transatlantic journey.

A number of local or visiting performers will, as usual, be there as support artists, as well as enjoying being part of the audience.
