Due to an increase in production demands, we are looking for ASSEMBLY & WIRING OPERATORS to join our team. Contracts will be for an initial 6 month period with a view to extending further and ultimately leading to permanent employment. We have several shift patterns available: Alternating shift pattern: Mon - Fri 06.00 - 14.00 and 14.00 - 22.00 (37.5 hrs/wk)* Standard day shift: Mon – Thurs 07.30 – 16.30 and Fri 07.30 - 12.00 (37.5 hrs/wk) Twilight shift: 17.00 – 22.00 either Mon – Thurs (20hrs/week) or Mon – Fri (25hrs/wk) The work is varied, of a light and clean nature where attention to detail and quality of workmanship are essential. No experience is necessary as full training will be provided. Hourly rate of pay: Initial 24 weeks £9.22, thereafter £9.40 * Alternating shifts attract 25% shift premium – Initial 24 weeks £11.52, thereafter £11.76 We currently have plenty of overtime available at 1.5 x hourly rate and double time Sundays. A word from the editor It’s November - where on earth did the rest of 2021 go? Feels hard to believe that the C-word (C-h-r-is-t-m-a-s, that is) is just round the corner - I can barely bring myself to say it! Especially when views like this (right) and that on our front page are still gracing our skylines, albeit at a slightly earlier time that usual. We’re delighted that this month we can bring you another regular competition exclusive to The Ilfracombe Magazine. You could win a delicious Sunday roast dinner at the Lakeside restaurant at Hidden Valley Holiday Park - just check out page 6 for details on how to enter, it’s free and ridiculously straight forward so you’ll have to come up with a pretty good argument not to enter! Apologies in advance for the cliche, but Hidden Valley Holiday Park really is a hidden gem. As locals, there are some places we all know about but never actually get the chance to visit - and Hidden Valley is a prime example. Set in beautiful, green grounds and with its gorgeous lake and adjacent restaurant, it really does feel like you’re visiting somewhere completely out of the area. As if that wasn’t enough, the food on offer
at the Lakeside restaurant is also very good. So do yourself a favour and get your entries in. This week we are also helping to launch a fundraising bid for Pip and Jim’s church, one of the town’s many jewels. The buildling is in need of urgent repairs and church members are trying to raise a whopping £175,000 for these essential works. You can find all the details about the phases of work and how

you can help out on page 10. On the other end of the construction scale, we’ve also got an update on the watersports centre which is seeing great progress - full story on page 8. I’ll see you next month in.....December (still can’t believe it)!

8 watersports centre site progressing well
Ilfracombe is one step closer to having its own watersports centre, as the construction project at Larkstone is showing signs of progress. The site was visited recently by local district councillors and members of North Devon Council’s project team to check on progress of the development. Councillors Daniel Turton, Netti Pearson, Geoffrey Fowler, Jim Campbell, Paul Crabb and Malcolm Prowse gathered with council officers and project managers from Pearce Construction to inspect progress on site. Latest developments include foundations for the new seawall and the removal of the old canoe store. Pre-cast blocks for the sea wall were due to be installed in late October. Lead Member for Economic
Development and Strategic Planning Policy, Councillor Malcolm Prowse, says “The council hopes that this centre will bring more tourism, which in turn will bring more money and more jobs to the town. None of this would be possible without funding for the project which came from the Government’s Getting Building Fund after a bid by The Heart of the South West Local Enterprise Partnership and we are extremely grateful to them for their help in getting this project off the ground.” Lead Member for the Environment at North Devon Council, Councillor Netti Pearson, says: “I was particularly keen to find out how much work is being done to mitigate the impact of the works on the environment. I was pleased to hear
that a specialist consultant was brought in during the design stage to ensure that there was an environmental management plan in place. Pearce Construction have built nooks and crannies into the sea wall to encourage marine plants to take hold and grow. They are also building crab houses and man made rockpools for sea creatures to live in. I was also very happy to find out that most of the materials that need to be removed will either be reused in the new build, or have been sent away for recycling, with very little going to landfill.” In order to mitigate the impact of the building, areas around the site will be identified for bird nesting, bat boxes and natural homes for insects.

10 pip and jim’s launches urgent fundraising plea An iconic Ilfracombe church has launched a £175,000 fundraising bid to pay for urgent repair work. St Philip & St James Church - fondly known as Pip and Jim’s - is a beautiful, grade 2* listed church and a prominent landmark on the Victorian seafront. It has been exposed to the salt and storms of the Atlantic since 1856 and, as a result, it now requires urgent repair and restoration work to bring the building into a functional and safe condition. Members of the church have begun a major Heritage Protection Project to ensure that this important building at the entrance to Ilfracombe’s harbour is made weathertight and fit for multi-purpose use for future generations of the community. The restoration work is phased, with priority given to making the building safe and weatherproof. The initial fundraising target of £175,000 will be used for the first two phases of the Heritage Protection Project - the safety and future use of the building with urgent repairs to the roof and stonework, followed by work to prevent structural damage to the tower from ringing the bells, and preserve the bells themselves. Phases 3-6 will follow on,
as future funds are raised. Phase 3 will see work on the roofing, leadwork and masonry as well as the stained glass windows in the West wall. Phase 4 will add full disabled access and a modern hygienic kitchen area, while phase 5 will create an interactive heritage arts trail for tourists, schoolchildren and the wider community. Finally, phase 6 will see the installation of a more efficient heating system that meets national climate change targets. There are a number of ways you can help. Cheques can be made

You’ve got to love this time of year in Ilfracombe. Winter is not yet upon us and the clocks have not quite gone back (though by the time you read this, that will no longer be the case). So, for a couple of months each year, we end up in this inbetween stage where it’s all of the seasons (and none) at the same time. Cat of the month! Penny BARNSTAPLE Meet Penny a very friendly, docile and good natured fifteen year old. A much loved pet since kittenhood sadly she now has to find a new home as her owner is no longer able to care for her. She has so far accepted this upheaval in her latter years amazingly well and although a bit sad at times she still always comes to greet us and will then happily sit next to us for some cuddles and attention as she does love human company. Penny is easy to care for and loves her food so although a naturally large cat she is just that little bit too large at the moment and is currently on a diet just to add insult to injury but still seems happy enough bless her! She does still like to go outdoors on a regular basis but has been used to a quiet home so being an only pet with no young children would suit her best.
