And my favourite bar none is the Combe Christmas weekend which this year runs from November 24 to 26. As well as the Lighting of the Lights on the Friday, there’s also stalls and entertainment over the weekend and even a ball on December 9. See you there!

CHANGES TO GREEN BIN SERVICE

Residents are being reminded that their garden waste will be collected every four weeks during the winter months.

Between November and January inclusive, residents who have signed up to North Devon Council’s garden waste collection service will see their green bins emptied every four weeks instead of fortnightly.

Collections are reduced during this period due to the reduction in garden waste over the winter months. The last fortnightly collections will take place during the weeks commencing 16 and 23 October, with green bins next being emptied four weeks later, then every four weeks

keep their gardens in shape, and the fortnightly service will resume again in February.”

COMIC RELIEF AT THE LANDMARK

Jason Manford

One of the UK’s most popular comedians has announced an extra 27 new dates to his 2018 ‘Muddle Class’ UK tour, including a show in Ilfracombe.

Jason Manford’s 2018 tour will see the comic travel to all corners of the country delighting audiences with his infectious wit, charm and humour.

Jason said: “I’m really chuffed to be adding so many more shows in so many different places. I’m sure I must be covering the whole of the UK and Ireland by now! It’s gonna be a great laugh and I can’t wait to get back to some cracking venues, especially when we see how it flies in some of the country’s best

arenas. Come along, bring your pals, your teenagers, your folks and I promise we will have a cracking night together.” Last month Jason released his debut album ‘A Different Stage’ on Decca Records. Inspired by Manford’s love for musical theatre, ‘A Different Stage’ ranges from show tunes he has performed in the past, to songs that are close to his heart and some of his childhood favourites. It will feature a rendition of ‘On The Street Where You Live’ from My Fair Lady, ‘Hushabye Mountain’ from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, ‘Stars’ from Les Misérables and ‘The Impossible Dream’ from musical Man of La Mancha.

COMING UP: The combe crawler

This month sees the return of one of the town’s toughest events - The Combe Crawler.

Billed by the organisers as a “legendary race that’s guaranteed to tax the muscles of even the most race-hardened veterans”, the 8.5 mile run takes in some of the town’s most spectacular scenery.

The race is put on by Ilfracombe Running Club who are proving themselves to be strong competitors at events across the UK - and in some cases even the world.

Speaking about the Combe Crawler, club spokesman Matthew Hayne, said: “It is a true cross-country race that encompasses steep coastal paths, stunning views and

Ifracombe running club members beautiful countryside running through dramatic North Devon scenery. This race is held in the middle of November every year, and has proven to be a fun yet challenging competition for everyone who has entered, no matter their experience and ability.”

Combe view

This picture sums up what I love about Ilfracome at this time of year. There’s a calm, eery beauty to the town in the winter and for me this can often make the place look even better than it does in the summer when it’s bathed in sunshine. And it’s this natural beauty that Facebook blogger ‘Combebird’ has captured in this shot. The sea goes a different colour, the sky becomes slightly moody and the craggy cliffs seem to come to life in the chilly winter light.

One of my favourite things to do at this time of year is to wrap up warm for a wintry wander to the sea front before returning home for a hot cuppa and a snuggle on the sofa with a duvet - the Danish call this Hygge - and I’m a big fan!

Open Nights are about whoever comes along, with anyone and everyone having a chance to ‘sing, say or play’. If you’re a musician and you don’t want to play solo, there’s often a chance during the break for a bit of a jam session. Anyone is welcome to come along, and although encouraged to participate, they won’t be pressurised to do so – you’ll be just as welcome if you just want to listen. There’s no admission fee, although the pot is passed around for contributions to the club’s expenses.

November’s concert is on Saturday 25th, when our guest artists will be Dana & Susan Robinson from the USA. It’s a joy to see this duo back in North Devon after far too long.

With blazing fiddle and banjo tunes, harmony singing and poignant songs and stories, these two take you on their journey across America, and convey the mystery and wonder of the places they visit.

A native of the Pacific Northwest of the US, Dana relocated to New England and discovered a thriving songwriters’ scene and a deep well of traditional mountain music. Susan’s background was in both classical music and the Scottish

Dana & Susan Robinson fiddle music of her ancestors, and later she studied with many of the great old-time musicians.

Together, they perform an exciting blend of original songs of the American landscape and Appalachian music, presenting the sound and feel of bedrock America. Add in guitar and mandolin and two rich, intimate voices, and quietly spectacular musicianship, and the result is a beautifully laid-back but enthralling evening with two lovely people.

A number of local or visiting performers will, as usual, be there as support artists, as well as enjoying being part of the audience.
