A word from the editor Greetings and welcome to the May edition of The Ilfracombe Magazine. The sun is starting to make regular appearances and it seems summer is well and truly on the way. Let’s hope this one - our first for two years without covid restrictions - will be good to us! I’m delighted to report that we have several new local businesses advertising with us which, I hope, says something about economic confidence post-covid. It’s a really tough time financially for many of us at the moment. As we go to print, fuel prices are sky high, the cost of food is steadily increasing and energy bills are through the roof. Supporting small businesses at a time like this is so important as it gives hardworking, local people a vital income which they, in turn, will hopefully spend locally - and so the cycle continues. So whether you’re in need of a cleaner, a gardener, a tradesman, a tree surgeon, a nice meal or an evening at the Theatre, take a look through our directory of adverts and see if there’s something for you. And if you do take out a local service which you rate, tell someone about it and spread the love. In other news this month, North Devon Council has
announced its annual community grants. This is an opportunity for a muchneeded cash boost for local groups who work hard to make our town a better place. The grants offer support to charities, voluntary and community groups and not-for-profit organisations towards projects that directly help local people, the local environment and the local community. Youth clubs, toddler groups,

COMMUnity council grants up for grabs
The Community Councillor Grants (CCG) scheme at North Devon Council is now open for applications. The scheme allocates each North Devon councillor £1,000 to award to projects or groups throughout the year within the North Devon district. The grants offer support to charities, voluntary and community groups and not-for-profit organisations towards projects that directly help local people, the local environment and the local community. Youth clubs, toddler groups, sports clubs, museums,
village halls and environmental groups have all benefited from grants in the past. Grants can be used to help with equipment costs, activities or just to help with day-to-day running and operation costs. North Devon Council leader David Worden, says: “Our Community Councillor Grant scheme has helped a variety of small projects get off the ground and support local clubs and organisations to continue their valuable community work across the district since it started. “There’s lots of information
on our website about the scheme, how to apply and a list of all the projects and organisations that have been supported. 10 Spring season brings big names to theatres
Spring has arrived, and The Landmark Theatre in Ilfracombe and Queen’s Theatre in Barnstaple have launched their Spring Season of shows. The new Spring Season brochure has landed, listing a wide range of exciting performances taking place at the venues this spring. Highlights of this year’s Spring Season include big names in comedy like Jack Dee, Henning Wehn, and Russell Brand (which has already sold out), as well as big musicals like Blood
Brothers, family shows, and both professional tours and local community productions. A spokesperson for the theatres said: “We are always delighted to launch a new season, and there’s something for everyone this spring. We really appreciate our supportive audiences here in North Devon, and invite everyone to pick up a brochure or visit our website to see what’s on.” Some of the exciting events this season include a professional tour of the Dreamboats & Petticoats musical
at the Queen’s Theatre in April, Craig Revel Horwood with shows at both The Landmark and Queen’s in May, a live stage production of Gangsta Granny, and a performance by the Welsh National Opera in June. Cat of the month! Merlin Barnstaple and District Since coming into our care Merlin has proved to be a friendly ad playful boy whose a sucker for comfortable lap to sit on. When his lifelong human companion died he was left alone in an empty house for a few months with just a daily visit to feed him. Dispite this stressfull situation his good nature has shone through and he is a lovely cat to have around. Normally super smart in his black and white outfit, the removal of three benign skin nodules and some over grooming from stress has left his coat a bit less than perfect at the moment but his smart black and white tuxido is regrowing nicely now and so should soon be back to his 100%. In his previous home he was an only pet with no children. He also had access to go outdoors when he wanted through a catflap so a similar enviroment would suit him best. Could you give lovely Merlin a second chance of a happy home and become his human companion again? For further information please contact:
