A special word from the editor
It’s a particular privilege to produce this month’s Ilfracombe Magazine. Never have I been prouder to be born and live in this town. We’re living through the most unusual times, which have brought hardship and loss to so many, but it’s also seen Ilfracombe demonstrate incredible spirit in such adversity. Like hundreds of others, I signed up to be a Community Volunteer Co-ordinator when the call came out from Ilfracombe Town Council in March. Our fantastic scheme to make sure no resident felt isolated during lockdown was then heralded on a national level and adopted by other communities. We’ve seen phenomenal acts of kindness, but most impressive has been the general spirit of togetherness. Whether it’s Paul ‘The Wedding Spinner’ Barrington holding an impromptu disco for the people of Chambercombe, or St James Dairy’s dancing cow spreading a little joy during grocery deliveries, people have been going the extra mile to spread joy to their fellow citizens. We have also unearthed a willingness to shop local and support local businesses, which I hope will continue long after we can safely
emerge from our homes. In this month’s edition of The Ilfracombe Magazine, all the advertisers are featured completely free of charge. It is a small gesture of gratitude and a way of helping to support them during these uncertain times. As a reader, I really hope you are able to support the local businesses within these pages, because they rely on you, now and in the future. On a wider scale, the country’s economic recovery will also rely on thriving small businesses. So, please enjoy the stories in this month’s magazine of
how Ilfracombe has shone even in the darkest times. And please pay particular attention to the businesses included, who are here and ready to provide you with a fantastic local service. This crisis has affected us all in different ways. We are not all in the same boat, but we are all sailing in the same storm. businesses urged to claim £10,000 grant
Small businesses across North Devon are being urged to check their eligibility for the government’s coronavirus support grants. The £10,000 grants are to support the many small businesses which pay little or no business rates due to receiving small business rate relief (SBRR) or rural rate relief (RRR). A £25,000 grant is also available to retail, hospitality and leisure businesses operating from smaller premises, with a rateable value between £15,000 and £51,000. So far, two thirds of the eligible businesses in North Devon have ap-
plied and North Devon Council has paid out almost £25 million to 2,114 local businesses. In total 2,500 businesses have submitted forms but around 1,500 are still yet to apply. Leader of North Devon Council Cllr David Worden says: “We’re concerned that some businesses don’t think they are eligible or that this is some sort of loan that they’ll have to pay back, but that’s not the case; this is a grant that does not have to be repaid. These grants provide a lifeline to local businesses so it’s concerning that a third haven’t yet applied. We’ll be making a concerted effort
to contact them all over the next couple of weeks to ensure that these businesses receive what they are entitled to.” This week the business rates team will write to all those businesses yet to apply, although with current lockdown arrangements, as many won’t be in their place of work, this is being backed up with phone calls and emails where contact details can be obtained. Eligibility guidelines for the grants along with the application form can be found on the NDC website on the coronavirus business support pages.

ilfracombe round table to the rescue
Ilfracombe Round Table has been helping out our NHS heroes by caring for the hands that care. When the group spotted a plea from a local nurse at North Devon District Hospital asking for moisturiser for their painful and ravaged hands, they immediately donated six large boxes full to the hospital. As you can imagine, with all the washing and sterilising needed during the coronavirus outbreak, the nurse’s hands were not in a good way. A spokesman said: “Thanks to our local front line carers, you’re all heroes!”
covid-19 testing centre opens at fast food restaurant A fast food restaurant in Barnstaple has become North Devon’s first coronavirus testing facility. The McDonald’s at Eastern Avenue is a swabbing facility for NHS and care staff as well as people in their household, with results available 24 hours later. Tests are only available to those who have been given an appointment via their employer. NHS and care staff – including NHS hospital, community and mental health staff; GPs and practice staff; pharmacists, ambulance workers and care home and domiciliary care staff – are being
encouraged to contact their employer if they need a test. Non-NHS or care staff can self refer for testing via a Government online portal, and will be given an
appointment at a site run by the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC). Mobile & postal testing will be available for staff who cannot get to testing sites.

hillside tribute to health workers
North Devon Council contractors have created a giant ‘Thank you’ to the NHS inside a giant heart on an Ilfracombe hillside. The tribute was cut into the grass on Capstone Hill by workers from Tivoli Services on 27 and 28 April as their way of showing appreciation to healthcare workers during the Coronavirus outbreak. Leader of North Devon Council, Councillor David Worden says: “We are working with Tivoli to maintain essential grounds maintenance areas during lock down, but are observing government guidelines
on social distancing and keeping travel to a minimum. The NHS “Thank you” on Capstone hill is a one off, but we feel it captures the feelings of our local community and is a fitting tribute to our NHS workers.” Local ward member, Councillor Jim Campbell says: “It’s a wonderful gesture on behalf of NDC to thank our marvellous NHS. Well done, what would we do without you?” Area Supervisor for Tivoli Services, Dean Sims, says: “We came up with this idea as one of our colleagues has COVID-19, he has
been in ICU for just over four weeks and is slowly starting to recover. We cannot thank the staff at North Devon District Hospital enough for all they are doing for him and all the people in hospital at this time. The NHS are doing a fantastic job right across the UK and I take my hat off to each and everyone of them.” The feature took them just over 12 hours to complete. It measures approximately 120 feet high and 100 feet wide and will be maintained throughout the season, or as long as it is appropriate.

The view with COMBEBIRD
It’s bizarre, to say the least, to see Ilfracombe so quiet and deserted at this time of year. Obviously there is good reason for it - we have to stay at home, protect the NHS and save lives - but that doesn’t stop it feeling a bit eery. Combebird has, of course, been out and about taking her usually stunning pictures, and this one in particular caught my eye this month as it captures the quietness that has accompanied this strange episode in everyone’s lives. When I looked back at what I had written on this page in last month’s edition, things were still very much up in the air and no one could have dreamt how much things would change. But we will bounce back from this - stronger and more united.
