Spring has finally sprung and a I write this to you I am currently sat out in my garden, the sun blazing down and the gentle whistling of birds overhead - there is no finer place to be on a beautiful day than nestled in the heart of your own kingdom, particularly when that kingdom happens to be in one of the prettiest corners of the UK. Roxy Still not a year and a half old, Roxy is a very pretty tabby and white young lady who has had a difficult start to life including being a great Mum to a litter of kittens.

Somehow, despite her good looks and loving human company, she's been overlooked and has been with us longer than we'd like. What makes things worse for her is that she hasn't taken to the confines of life in her pen, and is more than ready to move on.

What Roxy really needs is the company of someone who will pay her the attention she deserves, although as an independent minded lady we think she'd be best with someone sensitive to a cats' changing moods.

Roxy would be happiest in a household without young children.

Fancy yourself as a greenfingered saviour of our beautiful little town? Got some spare time you’d like to spend doing something positive and therapeutic?

We may have just the opportunity for you!

Ilfracombe In Bloom is in desperate need of new volunteers to help the town’s stunning floral displays

flourish. The award-winning organisation, which is made up primarily of people in their seventies, is looking for younger and “more able bodied” volunteers - or they may not be able to continue. The group has the following vacancies: St Brannocks Road area Watering and weeding of troughs as required – approximately half an hour each visit – watering June to September, weeding all year More of the same: Watering & weeding at several other locations around the town including the High Street, Hillsborough Road, Broad Street, the Seafront etc.

Working parties/guerrilla gardening: Two hours per week, various tasks for active people working alone or as a team.

Website Administrator: To maintain & update our website.

PR/Social Media: To help prepare the portfolio that is needed each year showing our activities for South West in Bloom & get as much publicity as we can.

closer to a plastic-free north devon

North Devon is one step closer to becoming a plastic free district, thanks to the formation of a new consortium.

Last month representatives from a number of charities, voluntary groups and organisations met at a workshop hosted by North Devon Council to discuss how they could each contribute towards making North Devon plastic free. They decided that, by working in collaboration, they could provide residents, businesses and visitors with a clear understanding of how to make a practical difference to their coastlines and communities. The new consortium will work in partnership with Plastic Free North Devon (PFND), in their Plastic Free

Coastlines campaign. The organisation is supported by SAS and The Pickwell Foundation, and recently received additional funding from the Big Lottery Fund and Fullabrook Community Interest Company.

It aims to inspire North Devon residents, tourists and businesses to reduce their ‘plastic footprint’ and drastically reduce the consumption of single-use plastic throughout the whole of North Devon, not just the coastal areas.

The consortium will be made up of a number of groups and organisations, including: • Plastic Free North Devon • North Devon Council • North Devon Biosphere • North Devon Coast Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) • The National Trust • Beaford Arts • Barnstaple & District Chamber of Commerce • Martin Dorey, founder of the 2 Minute Beach Clean • Petroc • BeachCare, Keep Britain Tidy • Ilfracombe Town Council • Beth Newsome from Seadog, representing small food and drink businesses.

North Devon Council’s Executive Member for the Environment, Councillor Rodney Cann, said: “Plastic pollution is everyone’s problem; we all need to take responsibility for the plastic we use, and how we dispose of it, in order to tackle this global environmen-

Surfers Against Sewage’s south-west regional representative and PFND coordinator, Claire Moodie said: “The formation of this consortium is an amazing opportunity for the plastic free movement to really gain momentum and take action fast and effectively across the region. Everyone has the opportunity and responsibility to make a difference - however big or small, every action counts. This campaign is about empowering every community to come together, make their voices heard and start a wave of change.”

After a series of superb and well-attended concerts in the first part of the year, there will be no concert in May as The Hunting of the Earl of Rone will be taking place in Combe Martin over the Late Spring Bank Holiday weekend.

However, our Open Night will be taking place as usual, on Saturday 12th May, providing the opportunity for people to give new material an airing or visit older items from their repertoire in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Anyone is welcome to come along,

whether or not they ‘sing, say or play’, and if you’re a musician and you don’t want to play solo, there’s often a chance during the break for a bit of a jam session. Spring into action at annual lee fair

The annual Lee Spring Fair is almost upon us. Taking place on Monday, May 28 at the Memorial Hall and meadow, the theme of this year’s event is Pirates. The fair opens at 2pm with delicious light lunches and refreshments served in the Memorial Hall from 12 noon onwards. Stalls and games, guitar and ukulele performances by local children, welly wanging, raffle, tombola and lots more – something for all the family to enjoy. All weather protection so come rain or shine it will be great fun. Parking in the village and at the seafront. This event typifies the traditional English summer fete - and we look forward to seeing you there!
